Falcon school club a soaring success Children at Allenbourn Middle School in Wimborne have a new club which has really taken off – falconry. A group of Year 7 pupils each week learns about birds of prey under the tutelage of teacher Rodger Trim. He has his own harris hawk, called Ty, which he brings in so the children are able to handle him and watch him fly. During the club the children are learning how to bring up a bird from a juvenile and how to train it. It is not unlike the film Kes in which a poor boy in Yorkshire teaches himself falconry after pinching a young kestrel. Geography teacher Rodger said: “I brought the bird in last year as a one-off but there was such a positive reaction I decided to start a club. “It is currently for Year 7 pupils and they all had to learn how to tie a falconer’s
HIGH FLIER: Ty the harris hawk at Allenbourn School
knot to gain a place. “We have to keep the group quite small but in future we hope to be able to grow it, enabling more children to get the benefits. “Because there is bird flu around at the moment we can’t fly the hawk outside but we will in future.
“The children really enjoy it because it is something completely different and hawks are magnificent creatures.” Headteacher Cindy Pritchard said: “We have wonderful staff who are always finding new ways of imparting skills and knowledge to the children.
“It must be extremely rare for a school to have a falconry club and we’re all very excited by it.” Allenbourn Middle School is part of Wimborne Academy Trust whose chief executive Liz West said: “This is a wonderful experience for the students who will learn a great deal.”

Leisure centre plans published
Twinning association calendar
Fordingbridge Twinning Association held its monthly meeting with the express purpose of generating its annual plan of events. The first will take place on Saturday, March 12, which will be its annual Murder Mystery evening, invariably a sell-out event. This popular evening is entitled Pasta, Passion and Pistols and is to be held in St Mary’s Church Hall at 7pm for 7.30pm. Without giving away the plot, you the jury must decide who the murderer is! Tickets are £15, to include a meal, available from Caxton Décor and Jessica Fashion. Soon after that, the association’s AGM will take place on May 5 at 7.30pm, at Avonway. Members are invited, and anyone not yet a member can join on the night. There will be cheese and wine. Membership for 2022/2023 begins at this meeting, and remains at £10 per household. Contact Keith Bennett on 01425 655331 or by email (hippotrain@btinternet.com) for further details.
by Faith Eckersall Dorset Council has published shock plans to axe financial support to Wimborne’s Queen Elizabeth Leisure Centre. The cash-strapped authority believes it could save around £550,000 a year from 2024 and claims the way the centre is funded – Dorset provides the management but doesn’t own the facility – ‘raised the question as to whether this provides value for money’. However, locals disagree, with the council’s own survey showing ‘overwhelming support’ to keep the arrangements as they are now. Other residents accused the council of giving ‘selected reasons’ for wanting the centre closed and criticised the implication that because 83 per cent of people use a car to access the centre, they could drive to other leisure facilities within the area. One resident said: “The arguments made that people can drive further to use facilities in nearby towns or will pay more to use private gyms and pools contradict the council’s stated intentions to reduce unnecessary car journeys and tackle health inequalities. The increase in housing, people and vehicles in Wimborne should mean we need more local health and leisure amenities closer to where people live, not fewer and further way.” In a statement, the council said that the centre’s funding ‘is far higher’ than any of the eight leisure facilities it owns,
which share the rest of the £1.7m yearly budget. It also hit back at claims that the potential closure was: ‘Inconsistent with the council’s commitment to health and wellbeing’. ‘The council operates three other leisure facilities in the East Dorset area, as well as two country parks, so it is felt that there is clear evidence that Dorset Council is supporting the community to be physically active. Many other areas of Dorset are less fortunate and don’t have access to the same level of leisure facilities.’ The authority pledged to work with the QES owners to ‘find a sustainable way of keeping their facilities available to those who need them’. ‘This will involve helping the school find alternative funding opportunities, making the current facilities more widely available and providing support and guidance for any users who may need to make alternative arrangements for their activities, if necessary,’
said Dorset Council. It is also pledging a one-off payment of £150,000 towards the replacement of the site’s all-weather pitch. Portfolio holder for customer and community services, Laura Miller said: “I respect the strength of feeling from the local community, but Dorset Council simply cannot justify spending so much public money managing a centre that we do not own, in an area that has so much comparable leisure provision close by. Making these recommendations has been difficult, but the school has a considerable amount of time to explore options for the centre’s future and I remain hopeful we can help them find a solution to their funding concerns.” The issue was set to be discussed at the council’s place and resources overview committee yesterday, February 10, and the recommendations will be considered and decided upon at the full cabinet meeting on Tuesday, March 1.
Get jabbed for holidays Post office back Sign up for virtual meets Public Health Dorset has reminded people who aren’t vaccinated that there’s still time to get the vaccinations now necessary for visiting most foreign countries. A spokesman said: “There are plenty of appointments available as well as availability at walk-in clinics.” Visit: dorsetccg.nhs. uk/vaccinations/
The Post Office run from Corfe Mullen Village Hall reopens on Monday, February 28, at 9am. The service will be open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9am-11am. And the village hall is now fully open for bookings. Details are available from 01202 698600 or email vhbookings@corfemullentc.gov.uk.
West Parley Parish Council is urging residents to sign a national petition to allow it to continue holding virtual meetings. The council said that the right to hold virtual meetings ‘regrettably ended’ in April last year. “Many councillors,
staff and members of the public don’t wish to expose themselves to the risk of meetings,” said the council. For more information, visit: change.org/p/ uk- government-andparliament-for-councilsin-england-to-have-thechoice-to-meet-remotely?

Foundation allocates amazing £101,000 Despite continued covid restrictions in 2021, the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation, which inspires children to ‘climb as high as they can dream’ by awarding scholarships and bursaries, had a successful fundraising year thanks to support from businesses, individuals and schools. Proving that every cloud has a silver lining, while government constraints meant that fewer JTYAF awards could be given out since youngsters were prevented from participating in activities, on the upside it means that the charity now has extra funds for 2022. Subsequently, the foundation’s trustees have now allocated a lifechanging £101,550 for awards for young local people that includes a £33,000 Jubilee Fund in celebration of the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.
ACHIEVEMENT: Trustees at the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation
The pandemic disrupted the life of each child in our community and significantly impacted the mental health of many, so this Jubilee Fund is great news for eight schools in the Ferndown area who have been invited to bid for this extra financial support, allowing recipients to offer enrichment projects that support their pupils’ wellbeing.
Platinum Award-Winning Care 2020

The foundation was set up in 2008 in memory of John Thornton who was killed in Afghanistan, aged 22. Since its inception, it’s given more than £850,000-worth of help to more than 2,000 local schoolchildren and youth organisations. Thanking the charity’s champions, Pete Thornton, chairman of the JTYAF, said: “We continue to be
humbled by the support we receive. Any charity is the sum of its supporters, and we are so grateful to everyone whose generosity has helped the JTYAF. “This is going to be an exciting year and the Jubilee Fund is a really appropriate way to mark the Queen’s Jubilee.” For more information, visit: jtyaf.org.

My marvellous memories of our historic market
I, like many others, was sorry to read in the New Stour & Avon no. 20 about the closure of Wimborne Market. I wonder if some readers can remember the Livestock Market every Tuesday chicken and rabbits in pens, cows, sheep and pigs sometimes with piglets. Baby calves, ears pierced with numbers; when I was young not realising their fate. My uncle, Jack Taylor, worked for Ensors looking after the variety of animals. My friend worked in the tea hut. It was buzzing all the time. Farmers came from all around and our fish and chip shop was packed in the cafe where they congregated for their meal - doorstep bread and butter and mugs of strong tea. Some of them going over to the Greyhound for a pint. It was their weekly outing mixing with the travelling folk who were also our regulars.
As we were the only takeaway at the time we were always busy. Once a month Jack led ponies and horses around in the ring for sale. His pride and joy were two shires that he showed bedecked with colourful ribbons in their manes and tails. He was always in his highlypolished gaiters. He taught me to ride, and my love of horses remained all my life and I bought a horse and pony. It is strange that as I stand in the garden where I have lived for nearly 50 years where farming implements were lined up for sale I can see in my mind’s-eye the animals in their pens. It was all part and parcel of country farming life but now it is the end of an era that we will never experiance again. I was glad I did... I hope the market will continue in its new home. Nancy Smith Wimborne
OFF THE WALL...

Are we being listened to? Back in December I watched the webinar put forward by Bellway to local residents. This was an attempt to answer concerns from local people, having this huge development about to be built. One person concerned did not know seem to know about an ancient hedgerow that had been ripped out, nor about facilities for cyclists. They also seemed unconcerned about a pedestrian crossing, which is definitely going to be needed to serve this large estate. I think the link road being planned could create a dangerous rat-run, with traffic cutting up Church Lane from Christchurch Road, across and down to
the road to Bournemouth. They could then avoid the congested Parley traffic lights. There are already several houses up for sale in this quiet village. The Bellway people seemed unable to give a clear concise answer. When asked about the vital Suitable Area of Natural Green space, (Sang), and allotments, again there seemed to be little interest and it was passed back to the council. I fear this is going to be an eyesore for Parley. There must be more consultations with local people. At the moment, it seems, they are not being heard. Susan Williams Ferndown

500 homes plan submitted for Ringwood
by Faith Eckersall Developer Crest Nicholson has submitted plans for nearly 500 new homes in Ringwood. The company wants to build 192 two-bedroom, 216 threebedroom and 72 four- bedroomplus properties on arable land at Moortown Lane. The build is expected to take place in phases, with full planning permission sought for an initial 168 units and outline planning permission being sought for the remainder. The 34 hectares of land had been identified by New Forest District Council as a place where homes could be built but it also wanted to see some land reserved for a primary school and public open space. However, a report submitted to NFDC as part of the planning process said: “Given the current position it is concluded that this is now unnecessary, as the additional primary school places can be delivered through the expansion of existing provision.” Local people have already voiced
strong concern about the proposals, claiming they would cause ‘significant additional impact’ on the area, with fears about flooding, stress on infrastructure, traffic issues, and lack of additional facilities for the new households. One objector said: “There are so many new houses going up in Ringwood but no extra amenities to look after the people in the houses.” Another added: “Ringwood is already ‘beyond’ what it is able to cope with and pouring more and more houses into remaining green spaces is not appropriate for this area.” The company is holding an ‘online community engagement event’ on Thursday, February 17, from 5.30pm to 6.30pm, when the project team will brief people on its plans and answer questions. People can register for the event by sending an email to consultation@ yfactory.co.uk Comments can be registered with New Forest District Council at: planning.newforest.gov.uk/ online-applications, and enter the reference number 21/11723.
Help... hares at risk Hares have always been associated with the mystical – but now they are the subject of a medical mystery and a charity is asking New Stour & Avon readers for help. Wiltshire Mammal Group wants readers who spot a newly-dead hare to report it to them to help beat the myxomatosis-style disease which it believes could be responsible. Wiltshire Mammal Group is asking anyone who sees a freshly dead hare to record its location and grid reference, and the date they saw it and to photograph the entire animal – especially around the head and bottom – and send the information to Dr Diana Bell at the University of East Anglia. She can be contacted on d.bell@uea.ac.uk. Wiltshire Mammal Group would also like to receive an email with the same details at: wiltshiremammalgroup@hotmail.co.uk.

Flower power for care home residents
Residents at a Dorset care home have had a blooming good time with a day of allout ‘flower power’. They and staff at Colten Care’s Amberwood House in Ferndown put their imaginations on a floral footing to brighten up the winter. Floral-designed bunting, table decorations and serviettes helped give the dining room and lounge a vivid blast of colour while residents and team members put on their most flowery and flamboyant shirts, scarves and dresses. Some residents also put orchids in their hair and wore Hawaiian-style lei garlands. As well as dressing up, activities included
the opportunity to make bouquets and displays and take part in a quiz about national flowers and flags from around the world. There was also a flower-themed singalong led by companionship team member and musical entertainer Rebecca Osborne featuring popular tunes such as Ramblin’ Rose, Daisy Bell and Paper Roses. Wilma Millett was among several residents who made their own floral decorations. She said: “We had a wonderful day that certainly cheered everyone’s spirits in the middle of winter.” Fellow resident Pat Fisher said: “It was a happy day. We were all singing and the decorations were cheerful on a dull day.”
Companionship team leader Kirsty Richmond Cole said: “There were some very eye-catching decorative flowers on display. The home looked beautiful and residents had lots of fun. It was all inspired by International Flower Day and the joy and appreciation people can have from flowers.”

Outline proposals for Matchams site Outline proposals have now been submitted for the redevelopment of the Matchams Stadium site at St Leonards with a continuing care retirement community with 330 extra care units and a 60 bed care home. The application by Senior Living (Matchams) Limited, validated on February 2, is being considered by Dorset Council, with a closing date of February 25 for public comments. It includes the provision of landscaping, open space, a suitable alternative natural greenspace (Sang), parking, and use of land as a nature conservation area, but the outline application is to determine access only, with all detailed matters to follow. The proposal was the subject
of a community consultation carried out by SP Broadway on behalf of the applicants, and run online and in a public exhibition last autumn. The consultation attracted more than 70 responses, the majority against the proposal, and SP Broadway say that asked if particular facilities were required onsite, a large
number of objectors to the proposals made the point that they would wish to see the raceway left as it is and for the proposals to not go ahead. “A small number of respondents indicated that a small shop on site would be useful and one respondent indicated that walking routes through the nature reserve would be welcomed.”
The formal planning application is accompanied by various documents including a social needs report outlining the need for accommodation for the elderly. A health impact assessment commissioned by the applicants from Savills says the 52-hectare site is in open countryside within a semirural community, and is characterised by the variety of sports and recreational land uses. Of the now restricted use for motorsport it states: “The established use generates visits of between 5,000 and 7,000 participants and spectators, generating congestion on Matchams Lane, and environmental and noise impacts.”
MPs’ round-up
Full report should have been published After weeks of waiting, we have been informed by Sue Gray that she is unable to produce a ‘meaningful’ report because the Metropolitan Police told her not to reveal details of the 12 events they are investigating. My view, however, is that Sue Gray could and should have published the full report and not caved into Police pressure. After raising this in the House of Commons on Friday, January, 28, I received strong support from lawyers and Constitutional experts. The Police investigation does not make the matter sub-judice. The investigation did not begin until after the report had been completed. By seeking to interfere in the content and timing of the report, the Police were usurping their power. Parliament should have insisted on seeing the full
Christchurch & East Dorset CHRIS CHOPE report immediately. It was disappointing, therefore, that the main Opposition Party ducked the opportunity to put down a motion which would have achieved this and which I would have supported. While it may suit the Opposition for the issue to remain unresolved, that cannot be in the public interest. I share fully the anger and frustration of
constituents at this avoidable turn of events. n Fortunately, there is some better news to report. I refer to the most welcome decision by the Government to abandon its ‘no jab, no job’ policies. Having condemned and voted against these measures from the outset as being at odds with individual liberty, it is gratifying to know that worried constituents working hard for the NHS will not now face the sack. But what about the thousands of workers in care homes who have been forced out against their wishes thereby exacerbating the chronic staffing crisis already being experienced in that sector? The Government should be apologising for the damage which this ill-considered policy has done to public health. n Several local dentists have written to me with
their suggestions as to how to resolve the current acute crisis in NHS dentistry in Dorset. The latest information is that only three of the 99 dental practices across the whole county, including Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, are accepting new adult patients and only a few more are accepting children. Although the Government has just announced £4.7million of extra funding for dentistry across the whole of the South West, that will be of no comfort to those who do not have access to a dentist. It is extraordinary that oral health does not form part of core healthcare policy. Every health profession other than dentistry has a place inside the NHS. Surely oral health should be reestablished as a right and not merely a luxury. I much look forward to discussing this further with local dentists.

Tree recycling raises £10k Lewis-Manning Hospice Care’s annual Christmas tree collection service raised more than £10,000 and gathered up in excess of 700 trees. That equates to seven tonnes of recycling, making it a double success for great causes. The popular initiative, now in its fourth year, has generated huge environmental benefits and through its recycling

Funeral group’s £7,000 for air ambulance A Dorset funeral group has raised almost £7,000 for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance (DSAA). Douch Family Funeral Directors presented a cheque to the charity that needs to raise £5million a year. Despite the restrictions due to Covid, staff at the group managed to find ways to fundraise for its charity of 2021. There were raffles, car washing, and some walked the length of a marathon or half marathon, raising funds through sponsorship. The group also held a quiz night and encouraged schoolchildren to carry out

Wimborne Railway Society is on the lookout for a new home. Chairman Peter Watson writes... Wimborne Railway Society was formed in 1975 and has since enjoyed almost half a century of travel, talks and friendship for hundreds of members. It currently has about 80 members and meets in the United Reformed Church in Wimborne twice a week – but that may not continue for much longer. The building has now been closed for worship and a planning application has been submitted to Dorset Council which could see the society homeless just before its Golden Jubilee. We have a membership that includes women and young adults, some of whom have learning difficulties, as well as many men, who all who find friendship and much-needed social contact while enjoying their broad, transport related, interests. We also organize the biennial Wimrail exhibition at Queen Elizabeth’s School in Wimborne which provides enormous pleasure for well over a thousand visitors and is scheduled
Planners have rejected proposals for a marquee to be erected behind the HIT Fitness Boxing Club where it was hoped to provide an additional area for classes and accommodate another ring. Case officer Kevin Riley said the large marquee, for which permission was sought for only two years so that its impact could be assessed, was to be set forward of the building line in Parkwood Road at the junction with Legg Lane, and close to the boundary with the street and a neighbouring property. It would be contrary to the pattern of development, architectural style and residential character of the street, in a very prominent position on a corner plot, and appear very out of place. It would also lead to a significant level of noise and disturbance very close to the property’s side windows. Wimborne Town Council said it was aware of the scarcity of facilities encouraging general health and wellbeing for young people in the town, and did not want to discourage this type of activity. But members were concerned it was not in keeping with the street scene and its residential nature, and at the extra traffic. The application was refused under officers’ delegated powers.

A Daimler Dart SP250 which has been discovered in an old garage in Bournemouth and needing total restoration, is expected to sell for £10,000 in the Charterhouse specialist auction of vintage and classic cars on Thursday, March 3. “It was the phone call you dream of as an auctioneer with the client saying her father had passed away and there was an old sports car in the garage she needed help with,” said Richard Bromell of Charterhouse. “Having arranged a convenient date and time to meet I was not disappointed when the garage doors were opened to reveal the Daimler Dart.” The Daimler Dart SP250, which dates to around 1960, has been tucked away in its garage since 1974. It is understood by the family to have been bought by the deceased owner in the early 1960s. It was used as everyday
transport and even brought new-born children home from Bournemouth Hospital despite being just a two seater. With the family home now cleared, the Daimler has been dragged out of its resting place after 48 years. Although the garage was in pretty poor condition it managed to protect the Daimler from the elements and the car has remained largely intact. The Daimler Dart was launched at the New York Motor Show in 1959 where it was unofficially dubbed the ugliest car in the show. Fitted with a 2.5-litre V8 engine and a fibreglass body it had a tested top speed of 123mph and a 0-60mph time of 8.9 seconds when new. Of the 2,654 SP250s produced during its fiveyear production run several were bought by Police forces where they were used by Traffic Departments to catch

up with speeders, and in particular café racer bikers. Today a Daimler Dart SP250 is a rare sight on the roads. Although they were not particularly popular when new they are now highly sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts. Rarely do they come up for sale and those that do are restored making this such an exciting discovery. Coming from a deceased estate in Bournemouth, this Daimler is estimated at £7,000-10,000 and is being sold without reserve at the Charterhouse auction on Thursday, March 3, at the Haynes International Motor Museum, Sparkford, Somerset. Charterhouse are now accepting further entries for this auction of classic & vintage cars and for their March 9 vintage motorcycle auction also at the Haynes International Motor Museum. n Charterhouse specialist Richard Bromell and the

System will get under your skin Love your skin. It’s going to represent you for a long time! Like many of us, I began my journey with skincare as a teenager. At the age of 13, I got my first cleanser and so began my daily skincare routine. Thankfully, throughout adolescence, there was nothing particularly wrong with my skin - I just thought it a good habit to cleanse, tone and moisturise daily to remove my blue eyeshadow and badly matched foundation. There were no YouTube or TikTok make-up tutorials back then! Little did I know this teenage pampering would lead to a professional skincare journey some 10 years later. It was only then I could really see the damage I had done to my skin by using low quality and highly- fragranced products. I’ve spent a lot of my time as a therapist working with very high-end spa based brands and many other famous ranges. I got to see some great results with clients but they never seemed to go far enough or the problems would never truly be fixed. So, when I set up my business Relax & Remedy, I knew I had to offer a cosmeceutical

range with a real resultsdriven ethos. After all, Relax & Remedy describes exactly what I do and what people come to me for - to relax or have something remedied and fixed. I’m so proud to now be one of only a handful of therapists in Dorset able to offer transformational skincare treatments with the amazing
Nimue skin health programme. Many of us use the same skincare for years and then simply stop seeing results. This is where Nimue is different with a 3 Phase System based on prescribed homecare products, combined with professional treatments individually tailored to transform the skin from the deepest layers.
I’m a total skin geek and I absolutely love seeing the difference good skin can make to people’s lives – no longer stressed about skin complaints such as acne or sensitivity. I’m very particular about what I use as a professional and I like to only use the best products and treatments that I truly believe in. I have to know it’s going to do what it ‘says on the tin’. There’s a number of reasons people come for skincare and facial treatments. Sometimes it’s just for a change of skincare, maybe they haven’t had a facial for a while, or they just find it a relaxing treatment. Most of the time, it’s because they want to change something about their skin and I can help take them on that journey.
Vaccination programme at next phase Dorset health and care leaders are reviewing the way they deliver the COVID-19 vaccination programme after the success of the pre-Christmas push for people to get their booster. With almost 85% of eligible Dorset adults now fully boosted, the vaccination programme is now concentrating on specific groups like children and certain communities who have not taken up the vaccine.
The temporary vaccination centre at Sentinel House in Poole has now closed for adult vaccinations. Staff there have delivered 10,000 booster jabs plus a further 3,000 first or second jabs since the centre opened. To date 58% of children aged 12-15 have received their first dose (against a target of 60%), with 20% in this age group already receiving their second dose. Dawn Dawson, Director of Nursing, Therapies
and Quality for Dorset HealthCare, said: “Our teams did an amazing job to set up this additional centre so quickly and to run it efficiently over the last few weeks. We’re so grateful to all the staff and volunteers who have played a part. “It’s right that we close the Sentinel House centre now but we will be able to set it up again quickly at short notice if the programme steps up again.” Anyone who wants their
vaccination can still get it at King’s Park Hospital in Bournemouth and Vespasian House, Dorchester. Primary Care Networks run by local GPs are also running clinics. There are also 15 community pharmacies across the county still offering jabs. Appointments are available via the national booking system and walk-ins are offered at some sites. Learning the five languages of love
By Susie Carver, consulting hypnotherapist with Sea Change Hypnotherapy in Wimborne seachangehypno.com
How do you like to give and receive love? We all have different ways of communicating our appreciation within our personal relationships, but when we aren’t demonstrating love to our partners in a way that they recognise and value we can encounter frustration, misunderstandings and friction. In 1992 Dr Gary Chapman wrote his best-selling book The Five Languages Of Love which provides some interesting insights and theories based on the author’s extensive career in marriage and relationship counselling. He describes five styles or ‘love languages’ which are typically used when
expressing love. Although we may appreciate characteristics from each style, there is often one that we identify most with. Chapman states that: ‘people tend to criticise their spouse most loudly in the area where they themselves have the deepest need.’ So what are the five languages? Words Of Affirmation You appreciate hearing your partner express their appreciation out loud. The words ‘I love you’ hold deep meaning for you, as do written notes or love letters
affirming your partner’s feelings. This is said to be the most common of the love languages. Quality Time You appreciate it when your partner gives you their undivided attention for a while so that you can spend quality time together. Switching off phones and TV, planning date nights or trips away helps you to feel valued. Acts Of Service You feel most connected when your partner demonstrates their love by helping you out with tasks, assists you to solve a problem or takes stress off your plate. Actions speak louder than any words for people with this love language. Physical Touch Hugs, kisses, holding hands and physical closeness shows you that your partner cares. Public displays of affection are most likely no problem for you, so long as you can
feel an emotional connection through physical touch. Receiving Gifts You feel valued when your partner expresses their love through unexpected gifts and tokens of affection. Far from being shallow and materialistic, this allows you to know that your partner is thinking about you and prizes you. So how can you use this knowledge to enhance communication and deepen your connection? And how can you figure out what’s important to your partner? It’s simple - just ask! If you communicate love in the language that’s important to you, recognise that it may not be the language that’s important to them. You could land way off target! So ask your partner what matters to them, and adapt to a style they will recognise and appreciate. Then you can both enjoy the benefits of giving and receiving love in the most appropriate way for each of you.
Exploring Stour & Avon
with retired Dorset rights of way officer CHRIS SLADE
CORFE MULLEN This is a fairly long walk that takes you through interesting countryside and also through the suburbs of Poole. Start at St Hubert’s Church, which is on the south side of the A31 by the junction with the B3074. There’s parking space close by. The church is worth a visit. With its arched ceiling it should have good acoustics. There’s a herd (or is it a flock?) of alpacas nearby which are interesting to see. There’s a pathway on to a former railway line which takes you a short way to the west, then join a road that winds its way south, west and south again to join a bridleway leading south for a mile through Stony Down Plantation.
n Upton Heath
This meets a road that takes you south west for about a furlong to join another bridleway that takes you south eastwards for about a mile and a half along the parish boundary passing clay pits and crossing Upton Heath Nature Reserve. When you reach the A35, the bridleway
and the parish boundary turn left and head north east for about five furlongs where you meet an old Roman road that takes you north for a couple of miles passing at first through the wooded heathland and then continuing in a straight line through streets on the boundary with Poole. You need to keep an eye out for the Roman road as it’s not obvious at first and is unsigned, so there’s a chance you might overshoot into Poole. When you reach Rushcombe Bottom take the B3074 road that leads you north westwards for nearly a mile to Sleight where it leaves the town and continues westward for another half mile to take you back to your car. You’ll have walked getting on for nine miles.

Learn to listen with your eyes When did you last listen to what someone had to say? When I say listen, I mean, really listen. Listening to the extent where you are completely focused on what the other person is saying. Not trying to butt in and tell them what you think or jumping in and finishing their sentence for them. Not desperately waiting for them to take a breath so you can put your five eggs in or giving the odd ‘yes, no, uhuh, mm, yep’ to hurry them along because what you’ve got to say is so much more important. Not interrupting them and just railroading the conversation completely or just hearing white noise because you’re too busy thinking about what you’re going to say, so have no idea what they’re jibber jabbering about! I mean, really listen. Be honest, a lot of the time we aren’t listening
very deeply at all. A lot of this is due to us being distracted by the jumble of things that we personally have going on in our own minds; the to-do list, the place you’ve got to be next, the pain in your back, the disagreement you had with your partner that morning. And when someone is chatting away to you, it’s human nature to want to join in, share your thoughts, experiences and feelings, because that surely means it’s a good two-way conversation and the other person will obviously feel better knowing that you’ve been there too, you’ve done that thing or felt that way. Won’t they? Technically, you are listening, but it’s only really at a very surface level. To listen deeply is a skill. As a coach, I have been trained to listen and believe it or not there are three levels to
listening. The first is often referred to as conversational or internal listening which is when we are pretty much focused on ourselves, our inner voice, considering our own agenda and only half hearing what the other person is saying. This level of listening comes naturally and most of us remain here unless we become intentional with our listening. The second level is focused listening. At this level you are focused on the other person, their ideas, thoughts and feelings, you are actively paying attention. We probably find ourselves more motivated to listen, depending on who we are with! The highest level of listening, which few people can do without intentional practice, is referred to as global listening. This is not just about paying attention to what someone
n Victoria Arnold is a life coach from Wimborne Victoriaarnold.co.uk is saying, but also what they mean and what isn’t being said. It’s about feeling the energy of someone, looking for subtle clues that aren’t always obvious; the pause, the shift in body language, the tone of voice, it’s about being open to receive more information in any form that it presents itself, not only the conversation but the environment too. Maybe you’re now wondering how good a listener you really are? Remember, you can hear through your ears, but you also need to listen with your eyes!

Imagine you’re a racehorse!
Imagine you own a million pound racehorse. Wow. Lucky you! I bet you’d be super proud, look after and care for it. You’d make sure it had the best food, was exercised properly and took plenty of rest. You’d keep up to date with vet appointments and the slightest suggestion of a pain or niggle, you’d get it looked at. You’d want it to have the highest possible chance of performing at its best. In short, you’d look after it, right? Why wouldn’t you? It’s a really valuable investment. Now imagine you are your own million pound racehorse. That might sound silly at first, but of course you are! Your health and fitness is priceless to you. Treat yourself more like
that prize thoroughbred. Looking after ourselves doesn’t need to be as costly as a racehorse; it’s the simple things like prioritising eating some healthy food, getting enough rest, taking some daily exercise and looking after your health the best you can. These are incredibly valuable things to do. If we think of our health as a lifelong project, there is rarely anything as important. Taking responsibility for our health doesn’t mean that when something goes wrong, that it is our fault, or that the care we took wasn’t worthwhile; it just means that we’re choosing to do something about it and improving our odds. That in
itself is empowering. If it still feels indulgent or silly, remember how priceless you are to your loved ones. We are worth so much to them. If you have caring responsibilities for others, then it’s really important to look after ourselves. It’s like when you’re taking a flight (remember going on airplanes?) and the air steward tells you to put your own oxygen mask on first, before you try to help others fit theirs. This is good advice for life; if we don’t look after ourselves, our ability to look after others is diminished. Perhaps taking some time to look after ourselves doesn’t seem so selfish now, but an act of kindness. Next time you find you’re

Child mental health service expanding by Lorraine Gibson Early intervention can be incredibly beneficial to aiding the recovery of anyone suffering with mental health issues. However, for younger people, having to be referred by their GP can be a very slow process. Addressing this and to further support struggling youngsters, Dorset HealthCare is expanding its Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (Camhs) Gateway. Launched in Christchurch, Bournemouth and Poole just over a year ago, the Gateway makes it easier and faster for 16- to 18-year olds to ask for help and so far it’s been accessed by more than 2,000 of them. Now it’s been rolled out to support young people across the whole of Dorset giving
them the option to self-refer themselves online, without going through their GP. The service provides prompt assessments and – where appropriate – early interventions to help with issues such as depression, anxiety, isolation and selfimage. Clare Hurley, Dorset
HealthCare’s head of Camhs, said: “It’s been a challenging and disruptive couple of years for young people, and we are delighted to make the Camhs Gateway available across the whole county. “Often a brief, early intervention when someone is feeling low or struggling with a problem can help that
person recover and prevent a more serious deterioration in their mental health. “And by enabling young people to refer themselves directly, we hope this will encourage them to manage their mental health and seek professional support if they need it.” One user of the service said: “Using the Gateway was an excellent positive experience for me, and a huge step forward for my recovery.” Camhs offers various services to children and young people. Sensory room transforms vaccination by Lorraine Gibson A phobia of needles can be a debilitating thing. Some people experience genuine terror at the mere thought of having an injection and for younger people especially those with learning disabilities or severe and longterm mental health conditions - it can represent a huge obstacle. Realising that this fear was preventing certain schoolchildren from getting their covid jabs, Dorset HealthCare staff and Community Action Network (Can) volunteers and staff set up a dedicated haven of relaxation at the King’s Park vaccination centre in Boscombe. Rather than having to wait in a busy, communal waiting area that may cause anxiety, the new sensory room is now
available to worried 12 to 15-year-olds before and during their Covid-19 vaccinations to help keep them calm. Dorset HealthCare staff and Can designed the peaceful space in just two days, making it the first such vaccination site of its kind in the South. Colour- and brightnessadjustable LED lights, calming sounds, an aromatherapy diffuser and a bubble light with floaty fish all create a soothing atmosphere; bean bags, a crash mat and wipeable sensory toys add the finishing touches. Lisa Midgley, Dorset HealthCare’s Covid nursing manager, explained the
thinking behind the initiative: “During the last year and a half, we have become more aware that there are a large number of young people who have been unable to receive their covid vaccines for a variety of reasons. “As part of the schools Covid programme, we realised that we needed a service for parents who have children with a learning disability or mental health condition. She added: “This new sensory room will ensure young people who may struggle in the usual clinic setting can now get vaccinated, and we will accommodate
their needs. We hope this encourages more people to visit the King’s Park site to get protected. “We are very thankful to Can and its volunteers for making this possible.” Liz Soffe, Can’s volunteer co-ordinator, said: “When Dorset HealthCare asked us if we could create this room, we swung into action and starting fundraising. “We received donations from Public Health Dorset’s health protection board and local donors, plus Brewers Decorating Centres gave us the paint to make it happen. “Our staff and volunteers gave up their weekend to get stuck in and we’ve ended up with a brilliant, calm and welcoming space.” More than 50 young people have used the room, and the feedback is very positive.

One parent said: “The sensory room made such a difference to my son Ethan, who is 13. “The calm, friendly area allowed him to listen to what was about to happen, without any distractions; to get comfortable and relaxed. “It allowed him to feel
in control and gave him the positive experience that was needed for future immunisations and treatments.” To book the room and a vaccination appointment for a young person with additional needs, contact the

Popular throwing contest knobbled again
by Lorraine Gibson Dorset Knobs have been popping up in the news since the announcement that the annual knob-throwing contest has been cancelled for the third year running. In 2020 it was all down to the lack of a suitable venue and in 2021 it was because of, well, you can probably hazard a guess. So what’s nobbled this year’s biscuit-based battle? Well, it’s all to do with size apparently. The event has grown so popular that it’s become too big to handle, according to organisers in the village of Cattistock. They do hope, however that the event, which was due to be held on May 1 in the village as part of the Frome Valley Food Festival, will be back next year. Dorset Knobs have been
made by the Moores family of bakers since 1860. After bread-making, it was the custom to make ‘knobs’ using the left-over dough. This was then dried out in
the ovens to produce a sort of rusk. Today, the famous biscuit is still made from traditionallyfermented dough and is given three separate bakings to give it its unique flavour and crisp texture. For the uninitiated, to compete in the Dorset Knobthrowing contest competitors must hurl their knobs as far as possible. The current record of 29.4 metres (96 ft) stands unbeaten since 2012. These are the contest rules, according to the Dorset knob-throwing committee: Three Dorset knobs per go Furthest knob thrown is measured Use only Dorset Knobs provided Standing throw from marked standing point Underarm throwing only One foot must remain on the ground during throwing
Distance of the furthest knob only measured within the designated throwing zone, which is five metres wide by 32 metres long, marked in two-metre zones, with use of measure in between marks to determine distance thrown Dorset knob measured at final resting place If Dorset knob breaks upon landing it will be the umpire’s decision of final resting place. Dorset Knobs were originally a cupboard staple for farming folk who would pour hot tea over them and eat them for breakfast. Nowadays, they tend to be split open and eaten with butter or a good, mature cheese. n Or are they? Do you have a different favourite way of eating your Dorset Knob? If you do, we’d love to know at newsdesk@stourandavon. net.

Cooking... Cheese Goodies!! Those that have been reading my column will know that I often talk about my family. My working circumstances have changed recently but it has given me the opportunity and privilege to help my mum get my dad up and washed in the morning. Dad is nearly 97 and mum has just turned 89 and it’s a difficult balance between helping them and keeping them independent. Dad has an irrepressible sense of humour, often not politically correct, but I get him! We chat about all sorts of things, his RAF days, family history, politics. Mum tidies up after me, just like she did when I was a child and sometimes, we sing songs from the shows to each other. (Mum starred in a lot of amateur shows as I was growing up.) They still live in my childhood home, and I guess it’s a little sad how our roles have reversed. Although mum still cooks, I like making little treats for them, as does my sister and her grandchildren. Dad is losing his sense of taste a bit, so we always use strong cheese and add spices and other flavours. These are just some of the things I have made recently: Cheese Pinwheels Ingredients: Brought Puff Pastry Green pesto
Cheese grated Method: Pre Heat oven to 190 Line a baking tray with baking parchment Unroll pastry Spread with the pesto Cover with as much grated cheese as you want but enough to cover the pesto Brush water on the edges of the pastry Then using the longer side, roll the pastry as tightly as you can, sealing the long edge by pressing together Using a pizza cutter, I found it easier, cut into slices about an inch thick Place on baking tray, lying them flat. Cook until they are brown. Cheese and Onion Squares Ingredients: 8oz Plain flour 4 oz margarine
It pays to advertise in the New Stour & Avon magazine!

Half an onion, finely sliced Cheese, as much as you need plus a bit extra for topping Method Pre heat oven to 190C
Line a baking tray with baking parchment Rub the margarine into the flour to form bread crumbs Add enough water to make a dough Form into a ball and cut in half Using the first half, roll out thinly and then using a square cutter, cut into squares and put on baking sheet Place some of the onion and cheese on to each square Roll out the other half and cut into squares Place a square top on to each square bottom, pressing the edges around to make a seal. Prick each square a couple of times with a fork. Brush with milk and sprinkle some cheese on each one. Cook and serve

Farming & Environment
A day at the farm
with Tiffany Fleming
Tiffany Fleming is a volunteer at High Mead Farm in Longham, Ferndown. High Mead Farm is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil, and nature. They ‘create purposeful roles for our cofarmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of wellbeing and self-worth that many have never experienced before’. I am delighted to say, the naming of the High Mead Farm Bunnies passed without drama; welcome Ziggy Sawdust, Ronnie and Mr Whippy. At just 11 months old, poor Ronnie was facing a trip across the rainbow bridge, but thanks to a pet rescue and a new home at the farm, he’ll now live out his days, happily. The farm was buzzing this week, in addition to the three new bunnies, a timely donation of Hi-Vis Jackets to help to keep our Co-Farmers safe and warm caused much excitement. Thank you to AJC Group and Redrow
Homes for their generosity. It is rare that the farm receives anything new, we are masters of upcycling and repurposing, so the brandnew jackets sent everyone into a giddy spin! This week, the Co-Farmers have braved the cold to cut back and clear out a hedge, being careful not to clear too much wildlife cover. They also turned the compost and diligently watered in the poly tunnel, which is full of broad beans, garlic, onions, peas, and spinach. The wood bay has been a busy place too, splitting kindling and filling the bags until they bulge. One
of its frequent visitors is Co-Farmer Will who loves working with wood. Will and I caught up whilst I warmed myself in front of the fire pit, a popular meeting place. Will tells me that he loves coming
to the farm as it gives him the chance to make new friends. He also likes working hard and feeling tired at the end of the day. Apparently, the farm is better than school. Will

feels he has changed during his time at High Mead; he has learnt to do lots of things by himself. He has grown stronger too, but not strong enough to move Bluebell and Doorbell, the farm’s big pigs – both of which are the size of a small building! It was good to hear about how Will feels about the farm. I feel I already know Will a little, as he is the subject of a book written by his father, Richard, that describes his journey of raising a child with additional needs. Richard’s book finishes on Will’s last day at school, facing the uncertainty of what comes next. The farm was created to help young adults just like Will, those who fall into the gap between full time education and work. It took Richard and his wife, Julie, over a year to find a suitable placement for Will;
a working environment with adult company and strong role models from which he takes his lead. Richard feels the discipline of a working environment impacted almost immediately. Will often replicates the behaviour of those around him, which at school might often be the youngest pupil. The support that Will gains from his days at the farm means that Richard and Julie never have need to worry about him during the day. Will is always keen to get to the farm, and he’s not the only one! Farm Fact: Will brings us much joy on the farm, with his loud music, comedy dances, good humour and comments, and outrageous costumes. You can read all about Will in his book, ‘no I will’, available online or in our farm shop.

A game of patience, or play your cards righ It’s still cold enough to enjoy a log fire but with returning light, it’s time to get the seed tin out. If the packets are out of date I still try in a pot-luck seed tray on the window sill. Sweet peas are usually one of the first things I sow indoors. Sadly, in recent years they have not made the transfer from window sill to garden. This year I am trying a new tactic – partly inspired by The Great Pottery Throwdown! As sweet peas don’t tolerate much root disturbance I thought I would make a small seed pot from clay. The plan
Jo Green is a former allotmenteer, forager, amateur herbalist, pickler and jam maker who squeezed her allotment greenery into her tiny garden
being that in the spring I can just bury the clay pot in the soil and it will
naturally corrode and feed the soil too! I confess I found the clay out of area (but still in Dorset). I only took this little ball to experiment with and
do not recommend taking more as that would be unsustainable; plus it’s heavy and messy! I just shaped and dried it on the mantlepiece above a radiator as it’s not meant to last long or win any prizes – although it would surely make Keith Brymer Jones weep! This year I am using up Simiane Shallot seeds which have rose-coloured rings when cut and look pretty in salads but can be cooked too. Compindi Blue Statice share the seed tray.

Hannah’s Horticulture... with Hannah Hobbs-Chell Horticulturist and garden designer/ consultant Hannah is the gardener at High Mead Farm, looking after four acres of gardens and landscape. If you have a question for her, email:hannah. hobbschell@outlook. com including a picture if relevant
TEXTURES: Azaleas brighten up shady areas. Above, to attract wildlife, you have to try and think like them
Welcome to my new Q & A column, where I will be taking as many questions as I can from readers and doing my best to answer them. I love hearing from people and helping them with their gardens and design, so please do get in touch if there is a question you need answering! Like many, I would like bees and birds in my front garden. What mix of plants would your recommend, so we can enjoy a long colourful garden enjoyed by our birds and bees, and aesthetically pleasing? To attract any wildlife, you have to try and think like them – why would they come to your space? Food and shelter are the primary reasons, and therefore the qualities you should look for in plants. Different height shrubs and trees, some evergreen, are critical for shelter for birds, and some, such as those with berries (or with caterpillars/greenfly etc), provide food too. Put out bird feeders – if in the front garden you are worried about things going wandering, concrete the stand in to the ground. Most hedges are also wonderful habitats for birds and wildlife in general, and also far more efficient than a
fence at blocking any traffic noise from outside your home. For bees, anything with a simple flower (not double), tubular, purple (or yellow in the winter) flowers are excellent, and keep things hydrated as nectar production decreases in the summer when plants are thirsty and hot – at a time when bees need extra energy to keep their hives cool. The RHS has a wonderful set of lists covering suitable plants that benefit pollinators all year round: rhs.org.uk/science/ conservation-biodiversity/ wildlife/plants-for-pollinators We have a shady area in our garden. Are there any pretty plants we can buy? Shady gardens lend themselves well to contrasting foliage plants, which will pick up the different light levels and add richness with their shapes and textures. Think variegated hosta for instance, where that flash of white on the leaves will jump out, and ferns and acers add that sculptural shapely interest. For flowers, I suggest azaleas, anemones, epimediums, cyclamen and spring bulbs. How can I get rid of wild garlic growing in my garden without wrecking or damaging
all the bulbs growing round it? With great difficulty! You can pull up the leaves when they emerge, and whilst you won’t probably remove the bulb you will weaken it gradually as it won’t be able to photosynthesize. The only
other alternative would be to spot treat them with a suitable herbicide, which you may or may not wish to do. Do not treat with herbicide when it is flowering or due to flower, due to the risk of residues in the nectar.

Set in 1908 in Yorkshire, where Priestley was born, When We Are Married ridicules the smugness and hypocrisy of the Edwardian middle class. Three well-to-do couples the Helliwells, Parkers and Soppitts - married on the same day, at the same church, and by the same vicar, join to celebrate 25 years of blissful matrimony. The happy celebrations are brought to a sudden halt by a shocking revelation that these pillars of the community aren’t quite as respectably married as they thought they were! As the home truths fly like confetti and conjugal rites turn to farcical fights, an evening of sparkling comic mayhem erupts. With a photographer from the local paper due to arrive

by Lorraine Gibson Holby City actor Guy Henry, right, who plays Henrik Hanssen in the BBC hospital drama, has never forgotten his acting roots. As Hanssen, the consultant general surgeon with razorsharp surgical skills, and a good line in dry wit, he’s hugely popular with viewers. Yet it is Guy’s stage debut at the tender age of 11, that has led to another important role, that of president of the Highcliffe Charity Players who welcomed him on stage at the Regent, Christchurch, after their fundraising performance of Sleeping Beauty. Despite a string of acting roles, including Pius Thicknesse in Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Parts 1 & 2, fond memories of his ‘big break’ - playing a footman in HCP’s panto, Cinderella in the early ’70s -
have stayed with him and he’s been president since 2013. “It was a real treat to see Sleeping Beauty tonight,” he said. “It was one of HCP’s best - only one act, but they crammed their all into it! “Terrific script packed with the cream of the awful old jokes and some really funny
ones even I hadn’t heard before!” Full of praise, he added: “Top-notch performances all round and hats off to the indefatigable troupe of female chorus dancers who changed costume between every number - it must have been mayhem backstage! “It was a sparkling evening, just what we needed.” HCP chairman Georgina Smith said: “It was really special having Guy in the audience. “It’s so good of him to find the time to come and see us. He’s a great supporter and we are very lucky to have him as our president.” As usual HCP, who last performed Sleeping Beauty more than a decade ago, will donate profits from the panto to local charities. In its 50-year history, the charity has raised more than £200,000 for good causes.

Leon shows he’s king of the singers A 15-year-old boy who taught himself to play the guitar has performed on a public stage for the first time to an audience including the Mayor of Christchurch. Leon Lunn, 15, is a sixthform student at Portfield School in Christchurch. Portfield School is owned and operated by the charity Autism Unlimited and provides specialist teaching and care for students aged four to 19 who hold an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis (ASD). Leon, who is a fan of the singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, spent a year teaching himself to play the guitar using YouTube videos. He cannot read music, but says he is able to correctly guess the notes of songs if he listens to them on the radio. Leon’s teachers at Portfield School were so impressed by his playing and singing voice, they invited him to perform at the Autism Unlimited Christmas Concert at the Christchurch Priory last month. He said: “I’ve sung and played in front of people at school before, but never in public. “I chose to perform Perfect, which is one of Ed Sheeran’s
biggest songs. I wasn’t really nervous, even through there were a lot of people there. “The mayor and deputy mayor and lots of other people said they really enjoyed it. “Now my sister has asked me to play at her wedding this year, so I am now practising for that.” Jemma Dudgeon, headteacher of Portfield School, said: “Leon is a talented performer and when he took to the stage at the Priory everyone was absolutely bowled over. “Autism means people might perceive the world and interact with others differently and Leon, like many of our students, sometimes overcomes huge obstacles to do things many of us take for granted. “He spent almost every day for a year taking online tutorials to learn how to play the guitar and it now goes everywhere with him. We feel privileged to be able to nurture and enjoy his talent.” Jemma continued: “Leon says he would like to become a professional performer and who knows? - he certainly has the determination to make this a reality.”

Enjoy tea with legendary poet Celebrate the works of William Barnes with the Ridgeway Singers and Band. Dialect poet William Barnes relished the countrydances, folksongs and carols of Dorset, and often wrote about community celebrations, where music was a key part of the proceedings. This spring, the Ridgeway Singers and Band, led by Tim Laycock and Phil Humphries and supported by Artsreach, will celebrate the rich dialect of Dorset through music, song and poetry as they invite you to Tea With William Barnes. William Barnes was undoubtedly the greatest of the English dialect poets, but he was also, as Thomas Hardy wrote ‘probably the most interesting link between present and past forms of rural life that England possessed’. Born in Bagber, in the Blackmore Vale, in 1801, William Barnes attended
school in Sturminster Newton. In later life he was an innovative schoolmaster, with a knowledge of more than 70 languages, the author of more than 30 books in prose, an artist, engraver, musician, folklorist, inventor and parish priest. Many of Barnes’s contemporaries regarded him as hopelessly old fashioned, with his love of old ways, old words, and old customs; but now we have cause to be thankful that he captured the sound of the Dorset speech in such an artistic and imaginative way. Led by Tim Laycock and Phil Humphries, the Ridgeway Singers and Band will be joined by guests from the William Barnes Society to celebrate the sounds and stories of old Dorset, performing traditional songs collected across the county, playing dance tunes from the repertoire of Blackmore Vale fiddler Benjamin Rose, and
reciting some of the poems that keep alive the rich dialect of Dorset. Now a popular annual fixture in the Artsreach calendar, this years’ Barnes celebration takes place at the Exchange in Sturminster Newton at 3pm on Sunday, March 6. Tickets include a Dorset cream tea,
and are available from the Exchange (01258 475137) or online at artsreach.co.uk Artsreach is also partnering with local film company Pageant Productions to support residential care homes in the area in accessing a live streamed version of the event.

BRILLIANT: An artist’s impression of the new premises and, right, Simon Boyd
Reid all about it as new base gets the green light
“Absolutely brilliant news” – MD’s delight as new manufacturing base is given green light “This is absolutely brilliant news for REIDsteel, the local economy and GB plc.” The reaction of Simon Boyd, Managing Director of John Reid & Sons (Strucsteel) Limited, after planning permission was secured for a major redevelopment of its site in Dorset. The company – known as REIDsteel – received the green light from BCP Council for a state-of-the-art manufacturing complex, new offices and staff facilities in Christchurch. The redevelopment of the company’s Reid Street site, and adjacent land formerly occupied by Peeks Party Store, will deliver a 6.4acre manufacturing base and boost the company’s capability. Simon said: “It is a milestone in the long history of the company, which has gained a worldwide reputation for high quality British
engineering, design and manufacturing. “It will allow us to significantly increase productivity, create more highly-skilled employment and apprenticeships, and boost the local economy while cutting our carbon footprint. “In addition, the new facility will enhance our ability within both the domestic and export markets. “Our thanks go to BCP Council and their planning team for their support throughout the process. “They have worked with our planning consultants and architects to achieve a wellbalanced development which will contribute significantly to the local community. “All those involved with the planning process had the vision required to understand the importance of delivering a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility on a key site in Christchurch for the long-term growth of our company. “Furthermore, they
recognised the positive effect it will have on our local community which I also thank for their support.” REIDsteel’s portfolio includes aircraft hangars, bridges, sports stadia, and industrial and commercial buildings across the UK, Europe and the world, including cladding and glazing. Its Special Projects include hurricane and earthquake resistant structures, car parks, defence structures, water treatment plants, the power sector, infrastructure, specialist bridges and bespoke designs. Founded in 1919, the company has exported to more than 140 countries to date. Simon added: “Our people are our company, where every one of our 130 employees is a valued team member. “Together we are One Team. “This is a very welcome decision and is essential to our drive for continuous improvement, and not just
for manufacturing but for our people who are at the core of everything we do. “It is a landmark moment as we look forward to an exciting future.” REIDsteel has gained full planning permission for the multi-million-poundredevelopment, which will include a production yard, staff parking accessed from Mill Road, environmental improvements and landscaping. It will also include rooftop solar panels and electric vehicle charging points. Multiple manufacturing processes will be brought into a single, automated production line with cuttingedge technology from concept to delivery under one roof. REIDsteel is now working through the next steps of the scheme. It will continue with current operations on the site throughout the redevelopment process.

No cause for complacency after U-turn Health and social care employers have been warned by Wimborne lawyers to stay on top of Covid regulations despite a government rethink over mandatory vaccinations. Ellis Jones Solicitors – with an office in East Street – says that policies, contracts and risk assessments may need to be updated if the controversial policy is scrapped. Health Secretary Sajid Javid has launched a two-week consultation over proposals to drop the requirement after an outcry from employers and workers. The mandatory vaccine for all health and social care staff – including NHS workers and those in a Care Quality Commission (CQC) setting – was due to come into force on April 1. Kate Brooks, partner and head of employment/HR services at Ellis Jones Solicitors, said: “This rethink will be welcomed by many in health and social care although it does not mean they are out of the fire just yet. “Even if the U-turn on mandatory vaccinations goes ahead, employers will still be expected to create a safe

place of work for employees, and staff in health and social care settings will still be urged to be vaccinated and will need to consider carefully how to communicate and ongoing requirements
to employees.” The u-turn is expected to apply to care homes – where mandatory vaccinations have been in force since last autumn – as well as for NHS and social care. Kate, who has been recognised for her expertise in The Legal 500 and The Times Top 200 Law Firms guides, added: “Care home owners can be forgiven for feeling particularly aggrieved that the change is only being considered now after many employees have already left the sector. “They will need to consider updating policies and contracts on the use of vaccines along with those in healthcare, social care and other CQC settings to reflect the changing position in law. “They are advised to monitor developments and continue to communicate with staff who are impacted by changes to the mandatory vaccination rules.” According to the Government, more than 127,000 NHS staff have come forward for a vaccine with 95% having had at least one dose since September of last year.

ARE YOU PREPARED TO PAY FOR LATER LIFE CARE? Local financial expert, Peter Harding, explains why it’s important to plan ahead and make proper provision to pay for Long Term Care. Almost half of the UK’s elderly care home residents (49.6%) had to pay for their own care between 2019 and 2020: according to a report issued by the Office for National Statistics on 15th October 2021.
How much could you pay? The reality is that most of us will have to foot the bill for our care when the time comes, should we need it. What’s more, those costs are frequently much higher than many people expect. For example, the average annual cost of a standard residential care home in the UK is £34,000, while for more specialised nursing care, it’s around £48,000 on average. Source: Payingforcare.org, 2020 (Based on Laing & Buisson 2020 report)
The cap on care costs. It’s important to make sure that people do not fall foul of any misconceptions when it comes to paying for social care. Also, when the cap on care costs comes in, as announced by the government last year, this is more complex than it seems, and while it will help towards limiting some of the costs it won’t alleviate all of them. It’s therefore likely that many of us will have to face up to making financial provision for our own care, particularly as we’re living longer as a society, thus increasing our chances of needing support in older age.
Don’t leave it too late. Whatever your situation, the most important thing to do is to speak to a financial adviser, particularly as the rules about who pays for what are so complex, not to mention regional variations and what’s likely to happen in the future as the government implements its new policy.

Why vaccinate your cat? Vaccinations protect your kitten and cat throughout their life from serious and potentially fatal diseases. The injection isn’t painful, but can often be a little cold or have a slight sting. What do we vaccinate for? Core Vaccines Vets recommended that all cats in the UK have their core vaccines, these include: Cat Flu (Feline Herpes and Calicivirus) - flu symptoms, eye infections and gum disease are seen with these viruses. Cat flu can spread on surfaces, clothes and in the air, so even if your cat lives indoors, they should be vaccinated. There is a small chance your vaccinated cat can catch cat flu, but their symptoms are likely to be far less severe. Feline parvovirus (panleukopenia/ infectious enteritis) - this is a nasty, sometimes fatal, virus that can cause severe diarrhoea and vomiting. This virus can be passed from cat to cat and even be spread in the womb. Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV) - this is only necessary if your cat goes outside.
Additional Vaccines Rabies - thankfully Rabies has been eradicated from the UK, but it’s still on the continent and is required if you travel with your pet. Rabies vaccinations are given every three years in the UK. Chlamydia felis - this virus can cause flulike symptoms and eye infections. This is only necessary if your cat has a pre-existing problem.
When? Kitten vaccinations/primary course. Your kitten will need two vaccinations, three weeks apart. These tend to be at nine and 12 weeks old. Your kitten will be fully protected 3-4 weeks after their final injection and will stay protected for a year (at which point they will need their first adult booster). Unvaccinated adult cats, and cats that have missed a booster, will need a primary course. Adult boosters Your cat will need their first booster one year after their primary course, followed by a yearly booster for life. If your cat misses a booster by more than three months, they will need to re-start their vaccines again by completing a primary course of two injections. As with any medication there is always the slight possibility of side effects, but these are rare and the benefits of being vaccinated far outweighs the risks. www.vetsmiths.co.uk
