Introduction In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 goals for a better world by 2030. These goals have the power to end poverty, fight inequality and stop climate change. As Landscape Architect, we care about the living world that we have inherited and want to make it better for all the living organisms and systems in it. We aim to create diverse and sustainable open spaces for the future increasingly dense urban environments and build a better future. Landscape architecture engages with a unique combination of both the biophysical components and the creative and experiential dimensions of the human world.

Is it possible to create a TOD-based post-industrial ecology? What if... post-industrial landscape + restorative landscapes + transport orientated design + mixed land-use + transport hub + pedestrian friendly A place for both humans and ecology; A place to connect neighborhoods; A place for sustainable development

Why Butterflies? Butterflies are the wild indicators of the ecosystem, an indicator of a healthy environment and an effective pollinators; they are all good for the environment and play a role in increasing biodiversity – the variety of plants, animals and micro-organisms and their ecosystems.
butterfly knot_site analysis
Context The Bays Precinct located between Pyrmont and Balmain, two kilometers west of the Sydney CBD, comprises the waterways and foreshores of four connected bays west of Darling Harbour: Johnstons, White, Rozelle, and Blackwattle, encompassing areas including Wentworth Park, Glebe Island, Rozelle Railyards and White Bay Power Station, with an excellent sight of view and skyline that able to look at the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The site itself is currently a barren disconnected dry brownfield that is dominated by its flat concrete terrain. However, it is a place where full of development opportunities and the NSW government have already considered the future development of the Bays.

Topography & Geology & Soil Conditions
The terrain of the site area is disturbed by human activity, which is now a generally flat area and has a sharp edge. Most areas of disturbed ground have been leveled to slopes of < 3% (eSPADE 2021). According to the Rozelle Interchange Urban Design and Landscape Plan (Hassell 2020) and The Soil Landscapes of the Sydney 1:100,000 (1989), the site area was underlain by the Birrong, the Hawkesbury, and mainly the Disturbed Terrain.
Opportunities & Value

Limits & Realities
butterfly knot_fundamental assets
11. Low lying flat open deck areas currently have no amenity 12. Flooding issues particularly along overland flow paths 13. White Bay Power Station needs remediation 14. Multiple road intersections bring safety problems 15. Compensation costs for existing industries or transportation industries to be relocated 11
16. Arterial road barrier including topography barrier 17. Soil Pollution Issues • Most of the soil is now artificial fill, which is dredged estuarine sand and mud, demolition rubble, industrial and household waste. Also includes rocks and local soil materials (eSPADE 2021). This kind of soil is not suitable for growing plants. • Acid Sulfate Soils

Structure plan focus on the whole site.
Based on the TOD topic, focus on the White Bay Power Station area, where the future metro station will be constructed.
Considered both the TOD principles and the ecological systems, focus on the White Bay Power Station area and the Terminal area and the link between the two areas.

Key Moves
1
• A recreational promenade connecting the White Bay Cruise Terminal and the Future Metro Station. • A working dot and an ecological filter. • Public space for gathering and scattered crowd • To utilize the Power Station to keep or increased its cultural and historical value. • To create ecology. • Not only for transport and pedestrian, but also for commercial and ecological uses, retail and other activities.

Palette To create an environment for the butterflies ecologies by planting locally indigenous species, only one species were not native to Sydney Harbour but was chosen because it is an iconic plant of the Sydney basin. The planting palette will change colors with the seasons, hoping to attract people to visit in different seasons.
