“I wasn’t expecting to be so happy in the UK away from my family, but it’s this city that made me love student life. Chester feels really welcoming, which makes the transition into living independently as a student a lot smoother. One of my favourite things to do is have a walk along the River Dee with some ice cream and watch the sunset. WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER In a world that’s constantly changing, now more than ever is the time to ask: what matters to you? What matters to this University is making a difference; a difference to our students’ lives, and the difference they make when they’re out in the world. It all starts with giving our students what counts – connections, opportunities and an education focused on the future. Because we’ve been around for a while, starting 180 years ago as a teaching college, these are the things we know we’re good at. We also believe in showing students the power of their voice, so we listen to them and implement their ideas. In fact, the first difference you make could be right here. We want to empower our students because it’s our

responsibility to shape the world to be inclusive, fair and sustainable, and that can’t be done with silence and inaction. It comes down to us and in this moment with your whole future ahead, it comes down to you. So, think about the difference you could make. The world needs positive change and if that’s something you want to be a part of, we’re here to help you get the knowledge, networks and confidence to make it happen.

To me, Chester is peaceful, exciting and joyful.” Theresa English Literature and Psychology

BLENDED LEARNING At Chester, you’ll get a mix of online learning and in-person teaching. We’ve learnt a lot about a different way of teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic, but even more than that, we’ve embraced it. The University was awarded the Whatuni? Student Choice Award for Excellence in Digital Innovation in 2021, recognising our innovative and impactful digital solutions to improve the student experience and increase digital accessibility during COVID-19. So, with this in mind, an element of our blended teaching approach will continue at Chester, encouraging learning in social groups as much as possible with in-person teaching, but with lectures able to be accessed online from wherever works for our students. “University during the height of the pandemic was an interesting experience. Lecturers were very good at delivering virtual learning and continued to provide the same amount of support as ever. I am particularly fond of the asynchronous learning as I can access lectures whenever I need, allowing me to gain a better understanding of the material. In-person sessions were very COVIDsecure; students could socially distance whilst still being able to hear and see all of the information, and it was useful to be able to see peers and help each other with questions.”

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS: A PARENT’S VIEW chester.ac.uk/covid-19 Students starting university in the last couple of years have had to overcome the challenge of COVID-19, making a time of big changes that bit more difficult. The parent of one of our students shares her experience of her daughter starting university during a pandemic.

“This may come as a surprise, but it’s wonderful that my daughter has gone to university during the COVID-19 pandemic. She now has a focus, a routine and a purpose. She is learning, meeting new people, facing new challenges and enjoying new experiences. What made this such a positive experience in strange and uncertain times was the highly organised and safe environment that the University of Chester provided. The University has exceeded our every expectation. My daughter had been accepted to study nursing but had a change of heart just before A Level results day. The University’s support in her wish to transfer to a different course was phenomenal, they made everything so simple for her at a difficult time. So, I was already incredibly impressed before my daughter began.

Since starting her new chosen course, I have been blown away by the systems and procedures that the University must have worked so hard at to be able to give students a safe but amazing experience with such a personable feel - not easy in such times but the University has definitely achieved it in my eyes! My daughter’s learning experience at Chester has been excellent, especially in the situation we have been in. My daughter is happier than I could have ever anticipated and most importantly I feel that she is safe.”

TEACHING QUALITY

EXPERIENCE THE WORKING WORLD Our nationally renowned Work Based Learning module will give you insight, experience and give your CV an edge. “Having the opportunity to work alongside the top Criminal Defence Lawyers in Cheshire has been the best introduction to the legal field I could have hoped for. It has been the most rewarding and eyeopening experience of my academic journey so far by combining my legal knowledge with legal practice.

During my placement I spoke in depth with legal professionals at the firm and in the courts about their routes into their career, and this opened my eyes to different qualifications that are available after I graduate. I have also been able to network with a wide range of legal professionals which led to further voluntary placements.

My confidence developed with each new role and task I was given. I did things that I would usually shy away from such as attend conferences with Barristers and clients. I worked as a legal assistant in the law firm, Magistrates and Crown Courts which allowed me to witness court room advocacy. I frequently drafted legal documents where I gained transferable skills to my academic studies such as clear and persuasive written advocacy. I received regular feedback about my performance which has resulted in me now having strong confidence in my judgement.

To anyone considering Work Based Learning, my advice would be to make use of the opportunity and do not waste it. Remove any preconceptions that many people have of this module such as it is five weeks of voluntary work. It is invaluable experience that will shape you and your future career so undertake a placement in an area you love and are interested in as you never know what may come of it.”

EXPLORE ABROAD Our study abroad options give our students the opportunity of a lifetime, all with the support of a dedicated team. chester.ac.uk/studyabroad

“Between my second and final year, I went to Radford University, Virginia, USA, where I spent a year studying and creating some of the best memories of my life. While I was abroad I had so many amazing opportunities, including going on a trip around the states during my spring break and city trips with other international students, visiting the capital. I got to experience American culture by going to stay with my friend’s family during thanksgiving. I was able to explore different subjects outside of my degree, I learnt so many things like basic American Sign Language and Greek mythology. I’ve made friendships that will last a lifetime, who I still keep in contact with. I’m definitely a different person after studying abroad, I changed in both my personal life and academic life; I became more outgoing, adventurous and independent.

After I came back my grades improved, as I managed to push myself beyond what I was capable of before going abroad. I received so much support from the University throughout my whole study abroad experience; the application, travelling, adjusting to American culture and support when I came back home. There was always someone who I could contact, in the Study Abroad team and my Personal Academic Tutor. The experiences, connections and skills that I learnt while I was abroad, are things that I believe will be with me for the rest of my life and will help me in the future. Studying in America was one of the best decisions I have ever made, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

Seize Opportunities “When I initially moved away from the Caribbean to attend university, I was a bit nervous. I didn’t know what to expect but I thought to myself, moving away from home can be a frightening thought for anyone. Coming to the University of Chester was so similar to being back in the Caribbean in terms of the small community vibe. I was afforded many different opportunities as a student, such as language opportunities, part-time work and career opportunities specific to my subject area. Never did I think that I would be involved in so many different things whilst at uni but because of that, my preparedness for the working world was made a bit easier. So, one of the best pieces of advice I would give to new and current students would be to seize as many opportunities as you possibly can while here at the University, and don’t forget to have fun.”

WHAT IS A STUDENTS’ UNION? Led by representatives elected by students, Students’ Unions are a big part of the university experience.

So, here’s a quick overview to put you in the know. Societies Students’ Unions are home to student-led societies, and Chester Students’ Union (CSU) has over 50 of them. We’re talking things like Marvel, climate action, gaming and roller-skating – there’s a bit of something for everyone here.

Advice Students’ Unions provide advice to students and CSU offers free, confidential, non-judgemental and impartial advice from experienced advisers whenever you need it.

Representation A Students’ Union is there to represent its students. CSU works closely with the University to ensure that your voice is heard, and that your university experience is all that it can be.

Events Students’ Unions host a range of events throughout the year, so make sure you get involved and have some fun. CSU’s events range from therapy dogs, pizza parties and writing retreats for postgraduates, to inclusion events such as drag workshops and ‘Reclaim the Night’ marches, amongst other big events like the Welcome Fair, Society Awards and the End of the Year Ball.

Campaigns Students’ Unions run campaigns around topics that affect students, and ‘Anti-Spiking” was one of CSU’s most recent campaigns. University of Chester students, and students nationwide, joined a boycott of night time venues to stand up against spiking and harassment. After listening to students, CSU lobbied Cheshire Council and local venues to improve their procedures and staff training. 47

An Inclusive Space “One of the most important parts of university life is the connections and friends you make along the way - and as President of the LGBTQ+ Society, I understand what a daunting prospect that can be for some students! That is why I am very proud to lead this group, where people have been able to make lifelong friends through socials and events. We have a great online community where we chat, host games and film nights, and discuss LGBTQ+ topics including history and campaigns to run through the Students’ Union. Weather permitting, we also attend the Chester Pride march! Whatever being LGBTQ+ means to you, there is a way to get involved and meet new people in a welcoming and inclusive space here at the University of Chester.” Amethyst Bioveterinary Science

“Joining societies has definitely enhanced my university experience. Chester has a wide range of societies that suit all interests. I’m the President of the International Students Society, and we do various activities such as socials, trips and cultural events. My advice to every student is to join as many societies as you can; they are the best way to make the most out of your time at university.” Anas Economics and International Relations

“There is a huge amount of societies at the University. I’m the Welfare Officer for the History Society and we do activities that range from pub quizzes, film nights, all the way to escape rooms. We even held a charity quiz for Chester Aid to the Homeless. I’ve found societies really helpful to allow me to settle in to university life.” Kirsty History

“I’m a member of UoC Snow, Chester’s Snowsports Society, of which I’m also Social Secretary for. We have a lot of fun on socials, and I even got to try out ski racing, which is something I never thought I would ever try.” Grace Modern Languages

JOIN A SOCIETY

Societies are a great way to make new friends and an opportunity to try something a bit different. There are over 50 to choose from, or you could be a trendsetter and start your own.

Or, if you’re not really into joining a club but you’re looking to get or stay fit, our sport facilities will help you do just that.

“I’m a current member of the Squash team, practising and playing three times a week. It’s a good way to meet new people that aren’t necessarily on your course, and it’s a good way to chill out after a busy day of lectures.” Cameron Electronic and Electrical Engineering

“I’ve been part of the University of Chester Fencing team for three years now, I’m currently the club captain and I’ve really enjoyed being part of this sport. Joining a team is a great way to make new friends when you start university.” Danielle Nutrition and Dietetics

“I love that the Chester site offers so many opportunities for sports activities. The gym and the swimming pool are in the perfect location, and my favourite thing to do is rent the tennis courts and have a few matches with friends.” Lucy Journalism

“Outside of uni I’ve volunteered working with Cheshire Phoenix Basketball. It’s been nice to apply what I’m learning at university and making sure I can adapt it to different situations.” Ben Sport and Exercise Science

“I have volunteered at Open Days and Applicant Days as a Peer Mentor and I’m a Student Representative of my course while I’ve been studying at the University of Chester. They’ve been amazing opportunities to meet other students and to have a voice within the English Department which is always heard.” Marianne English Literature

“I signed up to be a volunteer at the University of Chester to not only enhance my experience whilst studying nursing, but also to give something back to my local community.” Sammie Adult Nursing

DO YOUR BIT

Volunteering at university is your chance to make a difference. So, whether you’re interested in conservation projects, working in a charity shop, coaching children, befriending elderly people, being a peer mentor, or helping at one-off events, there are plenty of opportunities for our students. 55

THINK AHEAD Our Careers and Employability team will back you all the way, providing support, skills sessions, advice and opportunities to get you ready for the future. chester.ac.uk/careers

“Picture taken just before I had my interview at Friends of the Earth Birmingham”

“As I entered second year, the Work Based Learning module was introduced. This module allowed nearly all Level 5 students to work in a real, professional placement for five weeks. At the time I was determined to work for a company that was actively fighting against climate change. I felt that finding a placement was a mammoth task and I had no idea where to start.

For me, I used the CV and cover letter sessions. I was struggling with the layout of my CV; I wanted the document to come across as modern, but also clear and professional. With a cover letter, I did not even know where to start! After a few goes and plenty of help and support from the team, I had a CV and cover letter fit for application.

One lecture from Careers and Employability and I knew exactly what I needed to do. The Careers and Employability team has created connections with hundreds of businesses and organisations ready for University of Chester students to thrive in the real world. Sessions run constantly to help prepare students for interviews and help with applications.

I applied for a placement on the job board provided by the Careers and Employability team and I was successful to the next stage! Again, a quick preparation session online for my interview and I had secured my placement at Friends of the Earth! Without the help from the Careers and Employability team I would have not been at all prepared to apply for a placement, let alone be successful.” Yasmin Geography

HOW TO FOCUS YOUR UNIVERSITY SEARCH As you know by now, there’s a lot to think about when you first start your university search. So, let’s narrow it down.

Course When you’ve chosen your area of study, lead your university search with that. Before you get your heart set on somewhere, make sure they do exactly the course you’re after. It’s a good idea to really look into the modules they offer, as well as their teaching and assessment methods, to make sure they’re right for you.

Location Whether you’d like to move away, stay closer to home or just want to experience somewhere new, location plays a part in your university choices. So, have a proper think about what kind of location will work for you. Some are more expensive than others, so if you’re leaning towards a big city, perhaps consider if you’ll have time for a weekend job. If you’re looking to save money, choosing a university not far from home gives you the option to commute, which can keep your costs down.

Future Plans If you already know what career you’d like to go into, find out which universities offer what you’ll need above and beyond your degree. So many industries require relevant work experience, so is that something your university options offer? If you need an additional qualification or an accredited course for your chosen career, there may be universities that offer that, so have a good look around.

Extra Opportunities Taking up extra opportunities whilst at university can make a big difference to your job search after graduation. So, try to have a look into the opportunities offered by the universities you’re considering, it could be things like earning awards, volunteering or learning another language.

UNIVERSITY VS. COLLEGE OR SIXTH FORM: WHAT ARE THE BIG DIFFERENCES? Change can be exciting and also a little bit scary, so what are the main differences you can expect when you come to university? Freedom This is a big one. If you’re living away from home for the first time, then this will be a massive change for you – financially, socially and when it comes to responsibilities. But, remember, the majority of firstyear students will be in the same boat as you, so you’re not in it on your own. In fact, you may find that you figure it out together.

Top Tip: Have a go at creating a budget beforehand. You’ll have an idea of your student loan amount and accommodation costs before you start university, and you can estimate costs for things you’ll need every month, like food.

Independent Learning Reading lists, extra research and thinking outside the box – these are things you can expect from university that you may not have experienced before, and giving them the time and energy they deserve will go a long way towards you getting the most from your degree.

Top Tip: Get started now. Pick the subject you’re most interested in at the moment and try doing some additional reading and research around it. This will give you a little flavour of what’s to come.

New People Your fellow students at the moment are more than likely people who live in the same area as you, know the same people and places as you, and you may have even grown up with them. When you come to university that all changes, and you will meet people from all over the world, of all different ages and a range of different cultures and views. This is an exciting thing and something to embrace rather than shy away from. Top Tip: In the first few weeks, make lots of effort to get to know people on your course, in your accommodation and who are part of any sports and societies you’ve signed up for.

UNSTOPPABLE STUDENTS All our students are unstoppable, and here’s one of them to tell you their story. “Nursing is a profession I have always been passionate about, and after 25 years I decided to take a giant leap and apply to university. I chose the University of Chester due to working with inspiring nurses within the NHS, who had received their Adult Nursing training from this University and were mature students like myself. I have found that I am one of many mature students at the University of Chester, and balancing work, children, and a husband, has not been as daunting as I thought it would be. My experience has been very positive, I have met students from all backgrounds and ages who have enhanced my own university experience. For mature students, returning to education after a while can be daunting, but the University of Chester provides extensive support in adapting to academic work, in the form of study skills, support from your Personal Academic Tutor and support from lecturers.

Nurse training within the current pandemic has provided student nurses with many challenges; changes in placement experiences and lecture delivery, as well as challenges around keeping ourselves and our families safe. It’s also provided an insight into nursing during a pandemic and given us practical experiences we would not have experienced anywhere else. Alongside which, the University of Chester has provided extensive support and guidance, and always kept students up-todate with academic and practice changes. When it comes to nursing, the University’s goal is to support students to succeed, qualify and provide outstanding nurses within the NHS, and this is a goal I strongly believe they will help me to achieve.” Sammie Adult Nursing

MAKE A DIFFERENCE Recent Modern Languages graduate, Austen, gives us an insight into his role at Audi Brussels, where he is a Diversity Consultant supporting and developing strategic and operational policy on equal opportunities and diversity. “Working to promote cultural change at Audi Brussels is truly rewarding. I am so passionate about our brand, our products and what we value. We are currently rolling out diversity training for all the management at the Brussels site. In our management training we discuss why diversity and inclusion are important for the future success of Audi Brussels. We do this by tackling our unconscious biases. All human beings have them, but we need to become more aware of them. By not doing so, we cannot make fair and objective judgements.

Without my language skills it is fair to say that I would not be able to do the job. Two Belgian languages and English are essential for the role. My degree prepared me beyond a purely linguistic basis however; it offered a global scope and you learn to understand the cultures of where languages are spoken. This gave me so much inspiration and motivation to set solid goals and always aim higher. My plans for the future are to continue to drive change. I absolutely adore my job.” Austen Modern Languages

Foundation Year Full Time with Foundation Year If you don’t have the required qualifications to enter on to an undergraduate degree, then a foundation year could be for you. Whether you didn’t quite get the grades you were hoping for or you’ve simply been out of education for a while, if you’ve got the determination and ability then this is a great option. Once the foundation year is complete, you can then go on to complete your degree.

Part Time Part Time Our part-time undergraduate degrees can last for up to 7 years, but if it’s a little different for a specific course then this is indicated in the course list.

Placement Year Full Time with a Placement Year This option gives you the chance to undertake a yearlong placement as part of your undergraduate degree, which really brings your course to life and will be brilliant for your graduate employment prospects. With this additional year, a fulltime course with a placement year lasts a total of 4 years.
