It has been the most rewarding and eyeopening experience of my academic journey so far by combining my legal knowledge with legal practice.
During my placement I spoke in depth with legal professionals at the firm and in the courts about their routes into their career, and this opened my eyes to different qualifications that are available after I graduate. I have also been able to network with a wide range of legal professionals which led to further voluntary placements.
My confidence developed with each new role and task I was given. I did things that I would usually shy away from such as attend conferences with Barristers and clients. I worked as a legal assistant in the law firm, Magistrates and Crown Courts which allowed me to witness court room advocacy. I frequently drafted legal documents where I gained transferable skills to my academic studies such as clear and persuasive written advocacy. I received regular feedback about my performance which has resulted in me now having strong confidence in my judgement.
To anyone considering Work Based Learning, my advice would be to make use of the opportunity and do not waste it. Remove any preconceptions that many people have of this module such as it is five weeks of voluntary work. It is invaluable experience that will shape you and your future career so undertake a placement in an area you love and are interested in as you never know what may come of it.”
