Franklin Asprilla, an economist from Colombia, moved to

Calgary in 2010 with his wife and daughter, with high hopes for their new lives in Canada. “I wanted better life conditions for my family,” he says. “And, I knew Canada was a warm country that opened its doors to immigrants.” Once Franklin arrived, he began looking for work. TAKING COURSES ONLINE

UNCERTAIN ABOUT ONLINE LEARNING?

Courses are offered in a variety of formats including classroom and online. Occasionally, courses are offered in a blended format — partially in the classroom and partially online. Some certificates are achieved completely in the classroom, others completely through online learning. Some certificate programs give you the choice of taking your courses in the classroom or online.

Learning online caters to busy schedules by taking the learning experience out of the traditional classroom and on to the Internet.

Before taking your first instructor-led and interactive online course, you will be required to take BMC 352 Learning Online. This course is your chance to explore online learning with instructors who are experts in this format. You will learn essential skills for success, challenge your abilities and ultimately decide if online learning is for you.

TAKING COURSES IN THE CLASSROOM Continuing Education courses are held at the University of Calgary main and downtown campuses at times that are convenient for adult learners. Class times vary, depending on the program. Main Campus 2500 University Drive NW Downtown Campus 906 8th Avenue SW

Most of Continuing Education’s online courses are instructor-led interactive courses. Students work within scheduled start- and end-dates and observe set timelines for learning activities and assignments. For most courses, students are free to choose when they go online during the week. However, some courses require that students attend online classes on designated dates and at designated times.

For courses that allow you to choose when you will go online, you should plan to log in to the university’s online learning software — Desire2Learn — three to four times per week in order to keep pace with the class. You should plan on studying and working approximately six hours per week per course.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

APPLY FOR CERTIFICATE ADMISSION EARLY

You must be at least 18 years of age to enrol in a Continuing Education course or certificate program unless otherwise specified, as in the case of programs designed for youth. For most certificates, a minimum of a senior high school diploma and work experience are recommended, but not required.

As programs are subject to change, we recommend you apply for admission to your certificate as early as possible. Once you are admitted, you can be confident that you have locked in the requirements leading to your graduation. To enrol in a certificate program now, go to conted.ucalgary.ca/apply. When you enrol in your certificate program, you will be charged a nonrefundable fee of $95. Additional fees may apply for specific programs.

The Certificate in Video Game Development for Secondary School Students is restricted to applicants 13-16 years of age. If English is not your first language, please review the English language proficiency requirements at conted.ucalgary.ca/english.

GETTING STARTED In most programs, you can take courses first and enrol in the certificate program later. When you are ready to enrol in the certificate program, you can apply for credit for those courses that you have successfully completed and meet the certificate requirements.

YOUR UCID AND MY CONTED When you make your first transaction with Continuing Education, you will establish a student account and you will be assigned a UCID. This University of Calgary identification number will give you access to your Continuing Education student records through the confidential student portal, My ContEd. This is where you will be able to view your grades, monitor your progress in your certificate program, and update personal information. The portal is secure. Only you can view your personal information. Access to My ContEd is at conted.ucalgary.ca.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS Certificate requirements shown in this publication or on the public pages at conted.ucalgary.ca are the requirements that a new student must follow to graduate. Because certificate programs are reviewed and updated on a regular basis, the requirements listed here may be different from previous or future years. For you to successfully complete a certificate program, you must meet the requirements that are locked in and noted on your student record when you are admitted to the program. Once you have been admitted — to be sure you are always choosing courses that can be credited toward your certificate — it is best to view the requirements outlined on your personal record at My ContEd.

ADVANCED STANDING When you enrol in your certificate program, you may request a prior learning assessment. Advanced standing may be granted for equivalent, graded courses completed at other post-secondary institutions. “ GRADING Student learning is assessed through assignments and examinations, and grades are assigned for each course in a program of study. Most certificate programs follow the grading standards established for undergraduate instruction at the University of Calgary. In the Certificate for Emerging Leaders, student learning is assessed through the evaluation of a summary journal that is submitted following completion of the required number of instructional hours. In the Office Applications Certificate, student learning is assessed through examinations completed at the end of each course in the program of study.

GRADUATION In June of each year, a Continuing Education graduation ceremony is held for students who have completed their certificate requirements. Once you have officially graduated, you will be able to obtain an associate membership in the University of Calgary Alumni Association. ACCREDITATION FROM PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS Continuing Education partners with University of Calgary faculties and various professional institutes, associations, and consultants to offer programs leading to professional certificates and designations, or continuing education credit from a professional association. LADDERING TOWARD A DEGREE It is possible to use some certificate programs as a stepping stone towards an undergraduate degree if you can meet the faculty’s entrance requirements for undergraduate students. Several 300hour Continuing Education certificate programs can be applied to a Minor in Workplace Learning, which will be accepted by the University of Calgary Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Kinesiology. To earn the Minor in Workplace Learning, students must also complete the course, ADL 107 Learning in the Workplace, and additional specified courses for a total of 400 hours of instruction. This short-format certificate is best suited to students who already have significant experience in the field of adult learning. Shellen Thomas is a busy and determined woman. “In 2010, my employer offered me the chance to take the Adult Learning Certificate to help with a new project we were rolling out,” says Shellen. “I jumped at the chance to go back to school and build on my BA.” At the same time that she began her certificate program, Shellen began another journey as a Master Olympic weightlifting athlete. “Just one year after starting my program, I found myself doing my school work in Cyprus while I was competing at the World Master Weightlifting Championships. That year, I won Silver.” Today, Shellen has moved on to a new support position. In addition to many other duties, she assists in a learning and mentoring program for employees and is also an NCCP Certified Level 1 Weight Lifting Coach. “I truly believe if I hadn’t started the two journeys at the same time, I would not have been as successful in either pursuit, and I would not have had the courage to move on in my career. This program will provide the theory and practice necessary to effectively lead incremental and radical change. Students learn the various aspects of change management, and how to support people through change while, at the same time, working towards delivering the organization's planned results. Are you motivated to put pen to paper and begin, or continue, your creative writing endeavours? If so, this focused Creative Writing Certificate may be perfect for you. The program covers many aspects of the creative writer’s world from writing and editing, to exploring and writing in various genres, to publishing and promoting written work. The evaluative and interactive model will ensure you receive rich instructor feedback and supportive peer review throughout the process. End the program by having a portion of your work evaluated in the final project course by a published author who will mentor and encourage you in your writing. This online, flexible and interactive program will allow you to learn the theory behind your writing as well as allow time for you to complete assignments, then receive feedback on what you’ve written. Students are expected to have university-level English writing skills including grammar, vocabulary, and basic writing experience. For those needing these skills, the course, WRI 110 Writing Well, can be taken at the beginning of the program and credited as one of the elective courses. Two creative writing samples are required at the time of certificate application for assessment purposes and admission into the program. There is a non-refundable fee for this assessment. The Certificate in Workplace Learning helps you develop knowledge and skills to contribute to a rapidly changing and challenging workplace. This area will interest human resource and other organizational staff who are pivotal in creating tomorrow’s dynamic learning organization. This short-format certificate is best suited to students who already have significant experience in the field of adult learning, are looking for a way to expand their knowledge and, at the same time, formalize their experience and expertise within a certificate framework. New and aspiring professionals would be better served to take the 300-hour Certificate in Adult Learning specializing in Workplace Learning (page 7).

The Workplace Learning Certificate is a 140-hour program. Students are required to take four core courses. Before taking your first online course, you are required to take BMC 352 Learning Online (see page 1).

This certificate is offered completely online. ADL 107 Learning in the Workplace is also offered in a classroom format.

Once you have completed the Workplace Learning Certificate, you may receive full credit for your courses if you choose to ladder them toward the 300-hour Certificate in Adult Learning specializing in Workplace Learning (page 7).

As programs are subject to change, we recommend you apply for admission as early as possible. Once you are admitted, you can be confident that you have locked in the requirements leading to your graduation.
