Francis Close Hall Campus Crime scene house Practise the management of crime scenes and carry out forensic investigation in our crime scene house. Collect and analyse evidence and discover how to present in court. Students have access to a forensic interviewing suite, where they practise interrogations and study the psychology behind the crime.
EEG and virtual reality labs Find out how psychologists use EEG (electroencephalography), biological markers and VR (virtual reality) to explore topics such as decision-making in dangerous situations, the accuracy of eye-witness testimony and the neurobiology of stress and wellbeing.
Environmental labs Our laboratories are focused on giving you access to the space and equipment for your own development and discovery. Rather than simply being lectured on expensive equipment, you’ll receive training in its use and the opportunity to deploy those skills in your final year project, whether you’re investigating the small scale, molecular basis of cancer or the global-scale pollution of Earth’s water resources.
GIS computing lab Geo-tagged data is fundamental to information flow and decision-making across our planet. Our Geographic Information Systems computing lab provides you with the key skills to work in a huge range of industries, from suitability mapping for conservation to planning sustainable urban development.

Meet our lecturers
“We treat our students like adults, like part of the team.” Professor Adam Hart, Biological Sciences An expert in entomology and ecology, Adam is also a regular presenter of radio and TV documentaries including BBC’s ‘Science in Action’ and Channel 4’s ‘Planet Ant’.
With our small class sizes and our focus on providing the best possible student experience, you won’t just be a face in the crowd. Lecturers and students build a community of learning by working closely together in the seminar room, the laboratory and the field. “I love that my research into crime can change things in the real world, and that I can bring those results to the classroom.” Dr Jane Monckton Smith, Criminology An expert in domestic homicide, Jane advises police and frequently contributes to television news and documentaries.
“My teaching encourages students to use film, music, advertising, museum artefacts and fiction to investigate the post-colonial world.” Dr Kenny Lynch, Geography Kenny’s research on tackling poverty, social injustice and environmental risks has taken him to many parts of Africa and India.

Find excitement further afield You’ll have the opportunity to forge unforgettable experiences on exciting field trips* both locally and abroad while you study.
Animal Biology, Biology or Ecology & Environmental Science Investigate ecology, animal behaviour, and the challenges of rhino poaching on a South African wildlife reserve. Alternatively, explore the home of the orang-utan, elephant and clouded leopard in the Borneo rainforest, examining the impact of ecotourism, deforestation and agriculture on this unique environment.
Geography Experience the beautiful environment of British Columbia in Western Canada, travelling from the coastal mountains, via Vancouver, to the Pacific Ocean. Or discover the human and physical geographical landscapes from Venice, across northern Italy, to the Swiss Alps. Or, visit the Western Cape to investigate social transformation in the new South Africa and the implications for natural resources in this fascinating environment.
“I did an internship at an equine veterinary laboratory – by the end of it, the vets didn’t realise I was actually on work experience – they thought I was an employee! I wrote up my results from the internship into a scientific paper which I’m now working to publish in a veterinary journal.” Abi Cox, Biology student
“I’m most proud that a police force commissioned us to do some research. We spent a week at the police HQ collecting data, and then spent the next few months analysing it and writing it up. It was great to be in the field, leading and coordinating. And that was just the start, the research group is still going on.” Kate Jones, Criminology Student
“Without the University of Gloucestershire, I would not have realised my passion or potential in making such a positive difference and achieving such great goals.” Tobi Osideinde, Criminology graduate now a member of Wiltshire Police’s BME advisory group and Avon and Somerset Outreach Worker
“My lecturers endeavour to develop my curiosity and they are always there to help you. They are really passionate and enthusiastic.” Tolga Akta, Animal Biology Student
Criminology, Sociology and Psychology Criminology and Sociology students examine different criminal justice and social issues in Italy, Bosnia and South Africa, with a focus on challenges such as organised crime, restorative justice, sexual violence, and crimes against humanity. For psychologists, a trip to Helsinki, Finland explores how approaches to psychology are shaped by a different social and cultural context.
*Field trip options change from year to year, but these are the trips we offer at the time of going to print. Cost of trips not included in course fees. Terms and conditions apply. Find out more at glos.ac.uk
