University approved housing The accommodation team holds a large database of external student housing that meets the university’s strict safety standards. You can find more information about the scheme along with how to access it on page 36.
University registered lodgings Lodgings are where a tenant lives in the same property as the landlord. We find this option is particularly popular with international and older students. You can find out more information on page 37.

Halls of residence Halls of residence can be a great start to university life and we currently have approximately 1,800 places in halls of residence on or near all of our campuses. They are all close to the town and city centres and are also served by the university bus service. Rooms range in price from £116 to £190 per week depending on the facilities available. All rent is inclusive of the following: • utility bills (water, electricity, gas) • internet • basic contents insurance All halls are self-catered. The standard contract length is 40 weeks. What you can expect as standard for all halls of residence is shown on page 10. Pages 14-35 provide details of each of the residences, including the facilities, room types and costs per week for each residence.
Other university managed accommodation The university sometimes takes on additional properties in the Cheltenham and Gloucester area to accommodate incoming students. If you apply for university accommodation you may be allocated one of these properties should those listed within this brochure be fully allocated.
Halls of residence application process Once you have accepted your offer you can apply online for 2019/20 from January 2019 at www.glos.ac.uk/accommodation • Select your preferred halls. We cannot guarantee meeting your request but we will allocate as closely as possible. Please note that the earlier you apply the better chance you will have of being allocated your preferred choice. • Instructions on how to accept your room offer will be emailed to the address supplied during the halls of residence application process. • Instructions will include completing the room acceptance process via our Halls Portal. Here you will be given details of your room, dates of occupancy, rent and the full terms and conditions. • You will also need to make a payment of £200 and set up a direct debit for rent payment within seven days of receiving your room offer. For Blackfriars residence you will be contacted directly by Cityheart who manage this property.

“I lived in Shaftesbury Hall for my first year and one thing I loved about my room was that I had an en-suite bathroom. I’d never had one before I came to university so it felt like a bit of a luxury! It was also great to be so close to Cheltenham because I could get to everywhere I needed to on foot – in fact it even only took me 6 minutes to get from being asleep in bed to lectures, which was just brilliant!” 20

“ It’s a real family feeling in halls. We cook and eat together. We go to town and back at night together, and it feels safe. The library and restaurant are on campus. We often go to study together and grab coffee and chips on the way to see us through. The view of the lake from our kitchen window is so beautiful. I walk around it when I need to clear my head.” 22

Blackfriars development The brand new Blackfriars development planned for opening in September 2018 for our students. This exciting new accommodation will host nearly 300 rooms for new and returning students, and will be managed by Cityheart. A combination of accommodation types will be available within the development, including en-suite rooms in cluster flats, townhouses offering great communal spaces and self-contained studios. The site is located in Gloucester’s historic city centre, close to the main shops and restaurants and a 25 minute walk to the Oxstalls campus. The 94U bus, operated by Stagecoach, also runs a regular service from the city centre to Oxstalls as well as our campuses in Cheltenham.

EVENTS MANAGEMENT GRADUATE
“ Looking back at my year in halls the main thing that sticks out for me is just how much fun the whole year was! We were never short on laughs throughout. I was actually a little surprised at how much everyone got on if I’m honest. Before I moved in I was worried that living with lots of people from different backgrounds would clash, but we all got on so well. In my final year I moved into a shared house just around the corner from Oxstalls campus, mostly with students that I have lived with this year.” 32

University approved housing and lodgings The Accommodation team provides a number of alternatives to halls of residence. More information follows on the type of accommodation available to you in the private sector.
University approved housing
Studentpad
If you decide halls of residence are not for you, then you may wish to consider shared houses or flats in the private sector. This option involves finding property away from campus and living with your fellow students for the academic year. Some first year students and a large majority of returning students choose this option.
All university approved housing is advertised on our website: www.glosstudentpad.co.uk
The accommodation team advertises available housing which landlords have registered through our University Registration Scheme. This scheme ensures all properties have been visited and that they meet certain health and safety criteria set by the university including providing gas and electrical certificates. Please note that the contract will be directly with the landlord, not the university.
This is exclusive to University of Gloucestershire students and features in-depth information about each property along with other useful tools and a message board. You can access Studentpad by completing the registration process on the website. Please note that access is only given to students with a firm offer at the university (UF or CF).
Property details
Letting agents
Most properties on the list will have between three and eight bedrooms with shared kitchens and bathrooms and appropriate furniture to cater for the number of students living in the property. You should expect to pay approximately £88 to £105 per week in rent, exclusive of bills, based on four people sharing. You should try to budget approximately £15 a week towards standard utility bills if they are not included in your rent. Phone and internet can often be charged on top of your utility bills so this would also need to be budgeted for.
There are many letting agents in Cheltenham and Gloucester. The accommodation office does not endorse or recommend any of these. Do talk to us about specific agents before signing up to a contract.
Contracts While all halls of residence contracts last for 40 weeks, housing contracts can be up to 12 months and you will find that contract lengths vary from property to property. When signing a contract ensure you have read through it thoroughly and that you are happy with all aspects. Normally you would expect to pay a deposit of one month’s rent when signing the contract to secure your room. The housing support team provides information, advice and guidance but the contract is between the student and the landlord. It is therefore important that you ensure any contracts are read thoroughly before signing.
Housing advice The housing support team is on hand to offer support and guidance to students living off campus, ensuring you settle into your new home quickly and have a happy and productive time at university. You can go to the housing support team if you have any problems, queries or questions to do with any aspect of student housing. Tel: 01242 715322 Email: housingsupport@glos.ac.uk
Student rented housing guide The housing support team produces a guide to assist students who rent houses during their time at the university. You can download the booklet ‘Renting the Perfect Pad: Your Student Guide’ on the ‘Private accommodation’ page on our website www.glos.ac.uk/accommodation
Lodgings The accommodation team also produces a list of study bedrooms available in houses where the owner lives in the same property. These lodgings offer a variety of flexible, non-fixed term accommodation with the choice of self-catering, half-board or bed and breakfast only. Rent for self-catered lodgings is approximately £70-£100 per week. Lodgings are generally good value for money with no further bills to pay.
36
This accommodation also offers flexibility as there are no formal tenancy agreements. The accommodation team does not view these properties but asks for a copy of a landlord’s valid gas certificate.

STEPHEN BURROWS
ACCOMMODATION MANAGER
“Before I joined the accommodation team I was actually a student at the university myself. In my second year I was also a residential assistant in halls of residence. I found the role so rewarding that I decided to stay on and become a full-time residential support adviser after successfully completing my degree. I now manage the service, providing pastoral care and support for our new students, but also ensuring that the terms and conditions of the halls contract are met. I’d like to think that my previous experience as a student here helps to enhance the service we provide.” 38
