Newcastle Farmers Market

SENSE
BUYINGBUYING LOCAL, LOCAL,
THE NOVOCASTRIAN WAY THE NOVOCASTRIAN WAY An in-depth guide for the best way to navigate the ‘Newcastle Farmers Market’, using local produce and what its all about...
Their Purpose
The Newcastle City Farmers Market was created so “you can buy groceries direct from the farmer - from the person who grew, nurtured and made the product”. The Market itself is an independently run company of over 20 years, which overtime has grown small business’ along the way. They create an experience that cannot be replicated, as it is forever evolving and changing with nature, and the goods people produce.
Benefits of Buying Local
• Supporting a local economy • Less ‘food miles’ (this is how far produce has traveled from farm to plate indicating environmental impact). • Fresh and product due to less time between the farmer and consumer. • Better relationships, local business cares about you • Uniqueness, variety and difference help to create new ideas and strengthen business.
The Producers
The people that make this market happen rely solely on selling direct to customers and therefore want to provide the best product they can. They do this by selling produce only when it is in season, picking when it is ripe. For some Farmers this means they can only trade their crop for a specific time of the year. Currently it is getting towards the end of Avocado Season so stalls like ‘Sandy Hill Avocados’ will be finishing up trading their crop.
Fueling Cafe’s
‘Newcastle City Farmers Market’ is the go to place for Newcastle cafes to get good quality produce, fresh, and local. This relationship of farm to plate allows customers to know that they are supporting local business, as well as ensuring they are provided with a quality product. A local business that does this is Estabar, Bec the woman that runs the cafe goes to the market every Sunday to get fresh produce for her business.

DIY : 5 STEP FACIAL 15
SENSE
Facials are an important part to
maintaining a healthy complexion. A staggering amount of pollution, dirt, grime, and dead skin accumulates on the face. This build up is an unavoidable fact of life. We can do the best we can to keep the skin clean, but it is not always enough. Our skin is like nature: it changes with the seasons and has different needs based on the temperature, humidity level and hours of sunlight. In the winter, a super hydrating facial will restore lost moisture, while a summer facial will work to calm sun-damaged skin. Getting a facial in the spring will invigorate and nourish dull postwinter skin, and an autumn facial will prep your complexion for the cold months ahead.
‘Our skin is like nature: it changes with the seasons...’
Some may typically get a professional facial every other month. While professional facials will cost you a pretty penny, there are plenty of spa-worthy products on the market that are perfect for giving yourself an inexpensive athome facial.
Instructions
1.
Clean. Remove all makeup and then wash your face, neck and ears with a good facial cleanser.
2.
Exfoliate. Using your fingers gently rub an exfoliating facial scrub in small circular motions all over your face. Make sure you focus on areas around your nose and forehead. If certain areas of your face are oilier than others, give that section an extra scrub. Go the extra mile and do a lip scrub too!
3.
Steam. There are a few ways to steam your face (over the stove, using a steamer), but the safest way is to do the washcloth trick. Fill your sink with warm water and soak a washcloth in it. Ring out the towel and then press it to your face. Repeat this 2 to 3 times.
4.
Mask. If you have oily skin, use a clay mask. For dry skin, I suggest using a hydrating cream or gel mask. Depending on the mask, leave it on for the suggested amount of time and then rinse completely. (DIY Alert: Making your own mask is very easy. An orange and yogurt mask is especially simple. Mix 1 tablespoon of plain Greek yogurt with the juice of about one fourth of an orange. Spread the mixture evenly over your face and rinse after 5 to 10 minutes.)
5.
Hydrate. Last by not least, moisturize! Smooth a nice, thick moisturizer over your face and neck.
Here’s how you can give yourself a lovely at-home facial in just 5 easy steps:
What you will need… - gentle facial cleanser - exfoliating scrub - washcloth - face mask - face moisturizer

HEALTH & WELLNESS IN NEWCASTLE Newcastle has its fair share of places to indulge your appetite for health and wellbeing. Our health and wellness article will certainly offer you more options than you can poke a stick at...
If you’ve got some time take a seat on the deck amongst the always green grass, coffee in hand, that’s brought to you by boutique Sydney roaster Little Italy, acai bowl in the other and soak up the impressive art wall that’s courtesy of what was one of our most loved Newcastle festivals, Hit the Bricks. Whether you’re on your way to work, walking back from the beach or heading out for some retail therapy head up the driveway and check out WIA.
WIA Store
Balance Gym
Just making a few shirts with their mates is what brothers Jacob and Nathan Pepper started out doing. Testing out their designs online first, it was then off to the markets before deciding it was worth taking a risk and opening their own store. Wanting to bring something a little different to Newcastle Jacob and Nathan opened the WIA Store back in March 2015, and have not looked back, nailing it in every way. Described by Nathan as a men’s street wear and lifestyle store, the brothers continue to work with local artists, like Mitch Revs, to stock a unique range of clothing that at times has a quirky Newy flavour to it. In store you’ll find a crisp retail space with the collection dispersed amongst massive graffiti artworks that take-over much of the walls.
This stunning heritage-listed building has been completely refitted to become Newcastle’s leading wellness and fitness gym. You’ll find dedicated studios for Hot Yoga and Zero Gravity Yoga, and also specialist zones for cardio, cycling, women only, functional training and more. Dozens of group fitness classes are available, and this three-storey facility also features a crèche and a café.
The clothing now also comes with coffee and acai bowls, as Nathan explained he wanted to mix things up and add something a little different into the space. Taking the lead from a good mate who introduced him to a more healthy way of life, together with a visit to South America, Nathan was won over by the power of the Acai berry and all its antioxidant good stuff.
Balance also offers certain programs for members. Personal training is the best way to get started, stay motivated and gain results more quickly. Balance Health Clubs work with a team of freelance trainers who are friendly, knowledgeable, and caring. They will direct, assist, assess and ensure all members are getting the most out of their workouts while having fun. Balance has a personal training option for all needs.

Anzac Memorial Walk In 1915 during World War I, Allied forces landed at ANZAC Cove, Gallipoli. It was in this same year that BHP Billiton first established their steel-making facilities at Newcastle. The Memorial Walk project has been built as a permanent memorial to these important events; a cliff top walk for Newcastle adjacent to the 1921 dedication of Memorial Drive in remembrance of World War I. The Memorial Walk runs parallel to Memorial Drive, complementing the existing Bathers Way walk sections from Nobbys to King Edward Park, Bar Beach to Merewether, and beyond. For years now the cliff top walk has been closed to the public with the tracks being eroded by the coastal weather. The Memorial Walk not only provides safe access to one of the most scenic sections of Newcastle’s coastal walk but 360 degree views that stretch over the Pacific Ocean and beyond to the Hunter Valley. The beauty of The Memorial Walk is that anyone can get involved with the structure providing safe access to all to soak up the spectacular views.
Natural Tucker Newcastle’s iconic vego, vegan & organic supermarket and café Allan is the store’s third owner, running it now for the past two years, “I’ve had businesses in
different industries, but other than having a passion for healthy food I just like a challenge”.Natural Tucker is predominately an organic supermarket that provides wholesome and organic food in its café. As the first organic and alternative food store in Newcastle, many others have followed suit, especially in recent years, to which Allan responds, “Imitation is the greatest form of flattery”. The store’s range of products is extensive, from their own peanut butter to laundry liquid, tahini, vitamins, oils, flours, teas, herbs, spices, and so much more. You can buy in bulk by bringing in your own container or use ones they provide. They also use local Newcastle suppliers where possible, “anyone who is a local supplier I will always go with them first, give them the opportunity which I believe is really important for a local business, the community ties and that relationship”. Their organic coffee is Impulse Coffee which is locally roasted at Sandgate, and their fresh juices are now created using a cold pressed juicer, where the cold-pressed juice itself is much more beneficial to your health than a juicer with a blade. Popular items on their menu include the Lebanese and Malaysian wraps for lunch, and better yet all of their menu comes with vegan and gluten free options. Natural Tucker’s latest venture will see them embarking in the digital world with an online shop set to begin soon.

Stereotypes In reality we are not defined by singular and specific stereotypes. People are too uniquely faceted to exist like that, Novocastrian’s as a group of people are even more so. We are KNOWN for our individuality. Perhaps we see snippets of people and this is how stereotypes are created, it gets blown out of proportion and becomes an icon. Everyone has a quirk of personality/ being that makes them who you are, e.g. I’d totally be a foodie fanatic, who can’t have breakfast unless its interesting in some way. COOL BEANS
My personal favourite thing about this place though, is they have these little plastic plugs that slot into the hole of the lid you drink out of, so that by the time you get to work your coffee hasn’t just gone cold and gross.
It’s 8 am, you’re rushed out
the door in a frenzy of spray on deodorant and dry shampoo because there just wasn’t time for a shower. Again. With your sanity barely in tact you now have to brave the glamorous morning Novocastrian traffic, and let’s face it, it tests the best of us. Sound like you? You need a pick (wake) me up, and who doesn’t love a good coffee (or tea) in the morning? Here i have compiled the best Cafes in Newcastle, to cater for everybody.
IF YOU WANT A VIEW
IF YOU’RE IN A HURRY
If you find yourself unable to squeeze your morning coffee into your daily routine, you need to try out Expresso Coffee on crossroads Glendale. A drive through coffee expressway, they’re extremely efficient and cater for the busiest of customers. And the best part is, they sell breakfast muffins, toast and banana bread for those who don’t have time to cook breakfast either. The coffee and food is good too, and reasonably priced. *Disclaimer: i do not condone eating whilst driving.
If you consider yourself an upper class citizen with a bit of free time who doesn’t mind spending a little extra for a view, Estabar Cafe is for you. located on Newcastle’s iconic beach front, with coffee to die for and service that’s a blast, it’s worth every dollar you spend there.

IF YOU WANT LOCALLY GROWN
Locally grown produce is an incredibly important thing to support in your local community, and Blue Door cafe on Hunter street understands and takes pride in that. Blue Door offers ‘Health conscious meals made from thoughtfully source ingredients’ so if you’re looking for a health conscious, organic, locally sourced cafe, this place is for you. Which also, of course, includes their remarkable coffee. With many positive reviews online, including one that said ‘the chicken and cheese panini is so good id punch a toddler for it’ this is seriously a place to check out.
DEPRESSO:// (NOUN) “THE FEELING YOU GET WHEN YOU’VE RUN OUT OF COFFEE” IF YOU WANT TO EMBRACE YOUR NERDY SIDE Okay, I’m gunna be honest. I absolutely HAD to make a spot for this one on here, because honestly i love it so much it’s one of my favourite cafes in Newcastle. The Empire Coffee Co. located in Honeysuckle is an adorable, Star Wars themed cafe that serves a whole range of food and meals and (of course) coffee of a high quality for reasonable prices. The atmosphere is always warm and welcoming, the staff are friendly and the Star Wars related paraphernalia is just too cool to resist. I must clarify, i hate Star Wars, but this cafe is just the best.

IF COFFEE ISN’T YOUR CUP OF TEA... Understandably, not everyone is a coffee person. If tea is more your... well, cup of tea, there are plenty of places in Newcastle that cater for this as well. Whether it be herbal, organic or just generic tea, there is a place that caters for every unique taste.
THE TEA PROJECT PTY Located on Newcastle’s iconic King street, The Tea Project is a cozy cafe that offers tea to customers as well as brunch food such as scones and dumplings. With a comforting atmosphere that makes for a great places to meet up with friends, this is definitely the place to go if you’re a laid back tea drinker who loves a good place to relax and chat.
T2 TEA If you’re not one for going out, and you prefer organic or more adventurous flavours, T2 is for you. T2 sells tea in boxes, as in it’s not an actual cafe, complete with a whole range of organic and wacky out there flavours that are for the more wild at heart tea drinkers. T2 tea is located in Charlestown Square.
