Springtide noun 1. The season of spring; the blooming season. 2. The earliest and often most attractive period of existance of things. Springtide is synonymous with adolesence and youth.

The Springtide Issue of Sense magazine was created by and for young people living in Newcastle and the Central Coast. Our team of student designers have put together a creative and relevant edition that adresses local issues and events that are idealy suited for 18-25 year olds. Springtide is an issue unlike an other in its ability to provide our readers with a variety youthful lifestyles; it’s for the fashionistas, the art nerds, the partiers and the travellers alike. We are here to show you how to make the best of your young years while living here in Newcastle and the Central Coast.

Our Team

Liam Hi, my name is Liam Forcadilla. I specialise in photography and fashion design, with interests in painting and illustration. My role in this edition of Sense magazine was cover development, as well as the curation of the student budget piece on partying in Newcastle and the article on the Same Sex Marriage Plebiscite.

Jade I’m generally that girl that talks too loud and too often but then struggles to write a single sentance about herself. As a 19 y/o design student obsessed with illustration and lettering, my hopes are that one day I will land my dream job as a graphic designer. My passion for art is obvious in my articles; the Long Jetty Street Festival and interview with local artist Grant Molony.

Indiya My name is Indiya Agnew Crawford, I’m 21 and have been creating art for as long as I can remember. I have trouble with reading and writing so visual communication is very important to me. I’m self taught, working best with watercolour and pencil. I hope to work in animation/game design. My goal in Springtide was to help educate young people about things relevant to them.

bea For as long as I can remember I’ve loved design. Growing up I would edit photos online adding in random text and cute drawings. Even at 18 not much has changed - I still love photography, drawing and cute things! But I really like to hope my design skills have improved since then. In this issue of Sense, I hope that readers enjoy our take on everything this spring season has to offer.

nikki I’m Nikki Davies, 18 y/o and studying a Bachelor of Creative Industries. My role in the Springtide Issue was to write about the festival essentials for my home area of Newcastle/ Central Coast; a topic aimed directly at local youth. My article on the Newcastle festival ‘This That’ incorporated relevant information with a minimalist style that would attract our 5 | The Springtide Issue age group.

After the huge success of the Long Jetty Street Festival in its opening year in 2015 and again in the following year, it’s back for the biggest and best version yet. Taking place along Toowoon Bay Road, Tuggerah Parade and Thompson Street, Long Jetty is the place to be from 11am to 7pm on Sunday the 19th of November. The 8 hour duration leaves you with no excuse to not get your butt down at some point and experience the excitement of the day. The brains behind the festival have made sure that for its third year running, all types will be catered for. With food trucks, craft stalls, live music, rides, art displays, brewers and bars Long Jetty can live up to its label as ‘the culture hub of the central coast’. On this day everyone comes together to celebrate all that the coast has to offer.

"it's guaranteed that the festival streets will be filled with local youth and your instagram feed filled with # LJSF17" The live music has been organised by Mountain Sounds Presents, hitting us up with talented, local, up-and-coming bands as well as more well known names like The Sea Gypsies and Ivy as headliners.

The biggest name sure to draw crowds though is Australian icon Kasey Chambers. “I got to enjoy the Long Jetty Street Festival last year as an audience member and I’m so happy that I get to add my name to the lineup of performers this year! I’ve spent a lot of the past year playing all over the world so it feels extra special to be able to play a gig in my home area on the Central Coast with so many great artists.” Her words have spread that excitement to her many fans planning to see her perform at the festival. The art precinct will be set up to display the creative network of locals. Artists such as ink painter and surf photographer, Grant Molony as well as Sydney’s popular street artist, Elliot Routledge will be creating unique live pieces that we're sure will leave you awed by their individual talents. Not to forget the food stalls and trucks! Every type of eater is covered with the wide variety of yummies on offer at the festival. Whether you have a sweet tooth, a fried food craving or if you’re a bit more of an adventurous diner, you're sure to find something to fufill your hunger with the huge abundance of delicious food. With so much to do and see, it's guaranteed that the festival streets will be filled with local youth and your Instagram feed filled with #LJSF17.

Rosie Hi! I'm Rosie. I'm a one and a half year old German Shepherd x Mastiff mix girl who is a total sweetheart. I have big doe eyes and a soft grey coat - I love people of all ages and I'm happy to greet everyone with a wag of my tail and a smile. All the kids say I'm like Scooby-Doo because I love my food and I have big floppy ears. Rosie is a softie, and a bit of a lapdog who enjoys affection and will give you gentle licks on your hand to show her love.

Lola Hey there, I'm Lola! I'm a lovely three year old Staffy x with a big smile that spreads from ear to ear. I have a tan coat and a pretty black face with some cute and expressive Shar-Pei style wrinkles on my forehead. I’m a total people dog and I love spending time with humans. I would love a good sized yard that I can gallop around or sunbake in.

Evie Nice to meet you! I'm Evie. I'm a very regal sixteen month old French Mastiff x English Mastiff x Wolfhound x Great Dane. That's a whole lot of breeds in my parents - and look how beautiful I am! (who needs a pedigree to be this pretty?) I have a soft, stunning coat and a soft temperament to match - my sad hound-dog eyes will melt your heart and make you fall in love with me in no time.

Monday

Tuesday

Wednesday

Thursday

There's no better way to start the week then with some tacky karaoke!

Tuesday nights are generally the quietest, HOWEVER, you cannot go past The Hotel Delaneys Top Shelf Tuesday.

You aren’t a UoN student if you haven’t been out on Student night.

Another new venue offering cheap time for UoN students is the Jesmond.

Humpdays at the well-known venues of Customs House and SJ's (Sydney Junction Hotel) offer your usual $5 basics and ciders and $10-12 jugs of beer.

Uni Thusday’s at 'The Jeso' consist of a free BBQ and free pool, keeping everyone’s tummies full and providing plenty of entertainment.

Monday nights at The Kent are surprisingly popular, with Beaumont Street locals and students alike flocking to this wonderful establishment. Unfortunely, on a Monday, The Kent is one of the only places that “goes off” due to the slim pickings of pubs and clubs open. Make sure to get there early for Happy Hour ($5 Schooners of what’s on tap) and a cheap feed before you sing the night away.

10 | Sense magazine

On top shelf Tuesday, $6 will get you a glass of the best quality bourbon, whiskey, scotch, tequila, gin, vodka or rum they offer. This is the night for those with a refined taste, and a tight pocket.

The secret to saving your dosh on the way to getting lit is the Family Hotel. $7 fireball and apple juice, $12 jugs of beer and PUNCHBOWLS for 4ppl (omfg incredible!!!) are at the top of my list but if your nightly budget is $20 or less, I suggest sticking to the $3 *Silver Pillow*...

UoN students are often found spinning their decks behind the DJ booth, providing everyone with some slick beats.

A BUDGET

Friday

Saturday

Sunday

A hotly contested night, Newcastle is buzzing with choice and venues often swarmed with bodies.

Saturday’s are known for big nights, and you can’t go past PLUM at the Gateway.

A “Sunday Sesh” is the perfect way to celebrate the end of a great weekend and welcome in the oncoming week of lectures, assessments and mosquitoes that plague all fellow uni students at UoN.

Milk Run at Sydney Juction Hotel offers $5 drinks & free entry, but the line soon gets backed up and often impossible to get inside. F%#K YEAH Fridays at the Family provide patrons with $12 margheritas and expresso martinis. Although both HOT offers, the real winner is Newcastle’s hidden gem that is RNB Fridays at the Gateway Hotel. RNB Friday’s at ‘The G’ feature Free Entry, $5 Drinks, no line-ups and AMAZING PIZZA. What more could you possibly want!?

Traditionally the LGBTI night, The Gateway goes all out, having Karaoke in the front and an absolute TREAT in the back with some of the best house and dance music you will come across. Free entry and $5 drinks are too good of an opportunity to pass up. You can save your money and still have a BIG night.

With the closure of the ever-popular “Wharf Life” at The Queen’s Wharf Hotel comes the beginning of a new era of a casual sunday party along the Newcastle Foreshore. Sunset Club, located at Customs House, will continue the tradition of cheap drinks and house tunes. $5 Vodka’s and beer, $10 jugs - a bitter sweet end to our week. Now, just to do it all over again next week!

Amazing Beaches We all know that Australia is famed for its amazing beaches. But with this fame, inevitably, comes the crowds of summer tourists - this is where Newcastle really shines.

Depending on the tide and whether you're game, Bogey Hole's ocean facing rocks also make for a perfect photo shoot location!

If you would rather have stretches of sand to yourself, try out one of Newcastle’s many beaches. You're almost guaranteed room to breathe and relax depending on the time of day and season.

If you want to keep heading along Newcastle's historical trail, try Bathers Way, a 5km scenic coastal walk. Along the walk you'll be able to find yellow information signs that tell engaging tales of Newcastle’s indigenous and convict heritage, culture and natural history.

For swimmers and surfers, Bar Beach and Nobby’s Beach are patrolled all year round. The former is Newcastle's highest profile beach, with volunteer members of Nobbys Surf Lifesaving Club additionally providing beach patrols on Sundays during the swimming season. For this reason, Nobbys is a favoured swimming spot for family groups and those learning to surf. Looking for something a bit different from the typically beach fare? Want to avoid filling up your car with sand? Try out Bogey Hole, a ocean inlet built by convicts in the early 19th century. It was constructed by order of Commandant Morisset in 1820 for his own personal use, which is an impressive feat considering the crashing waves that would have to be endured to cut and carve into the ocean rocks.

14 | Sense magazine

Yet another location for some picturesque photos is the Newcastle Ocean Baths. With its distinctive and architecturally significant Art Deco pavilion, this location is another outstanding historic landmark. It makes for such a good backdrop that they are a popular informal open air studio for amateur photographers! After a long day in the surf or bathing by the pools, Merewether Surfhouse is a go-to for a good meal. Get some of the tastiest Italian wood fired pizza for $10 and eat it over a beautiful beach front. There's so many things to do, even the most reluctant beach-goer is sure to be satisfied. The tide of Newcastle's coast this spring is guaranteed to delight everyone!

Darby Street Darby Street is Newcastle's go-to for just about anything. Art, fashion, food, music, you name it - it can likely be found here. As the Newcastle tourism page proudly proclaims, 'You would normally need to travel to an Italian country town, or a French hamlet to get a similar village vibe.' If you love art, or even just like browsing some of Newcastle's best creative talent - this street is home to some of the city's best. Nestled among coffee shops are unique galleries and photography studios. Newcastle Art Gallery is the most well-known gallery in the area, boasting an extensive collection of over 6200 works.

"you would normally need to travel to an italian country town or a french hamlet to get a similar village vibe." If you're looking for something a bit different, try Cooks Hill Galleries, Newcastle's premier commercial gallery. Regulary changing exhibits offer the chance to view pieces by some of Australia's best-loved artists, including Sydney Nolan, Brett Whitely, Pro Hart and as well as a steadily growing range of works from local Newcastle-based artists. For the skilled window shopper, or if you have some spare change - browse through the large range of fashion, music, boutiques, jewellery, home-wares, and everyday living stores. Blackbird Corner is a local speciality. The tiny corner shop features a handpicked and eclectic range of unique creations designed and made by Australian designers, many of which are exclusive to this Newcastle store. If you're looking for a well deserved treat and don't mind getting out your wallet, Blackbird Corner is your destination. And finally, with over 25 cafes to choose from on this single street it's easy to get caught up wanting to try all of them. For something that's friendly on the wallet and stomach, try Newcastle's go-to classic - Goldburgs. The rustic styled cafe is described as, 'an unwavering, unfaltering, dependable Newcastle stalwart for generations.' For some great photo opportunities, check out the side alleyway next door to Goldburgs where you'll find a hidden gem of colourful murals and plant life. This follows through to a residential area where even more walls are adorned with colourful art.

s d r i Bof a eather F Zach’s Parrots and Poultry is a business specialising in breeding, raising and selling a wide range of interesting exotic birds. Zach Schmakeit is a young Australian business owner in a unorthodox line of work. Zach breeds all of his own animals, including but not limited to; beautiful hand raised conures, friendly Chinese geese, a flock of designer hens (multiple breeds) and a most impressive reversed pied peafowl. Sense magazine took the chance to interview him and find out how he got his start in such a unique business.

"I've always had an interest in animals. When I was 5 years old, we were renovating our house and we lived with my Gran. She was very supportive of my fascination, especially with birds, and we would make regular trips to the pet shop, always bringing some new creature home, feathered or furred. When we moved back home, I set about building my first aviary. It ended up housing finches, doves, lorikeets and quail. Just over 16 years later, I now breed exotic companion parrots, as well as a range of ornamental pheasants, waterfowl and peacocks. Being young and interested in birds has had its ups and downs. The biggest problem I encountered was people not taking me seriously when I wanted to buy and/or sell, because I was so young.

But by the same token, there were a few great people that took me under their wings and taught me a lot, and for that I will be forever grateful. I believe having this business from such a young age has definitely helped me develop my social skills; with two focus demographics - the suburban family looking for a handraised pet, or the rurally based couple looking for a colourful peacock or two. I've been fortunate enough to get in touch with a huge number of great people from all walks of life, and it's really helped me. I see a lot of growth in the future of Zach's Parrots and Poultry, but for the meantime with me completing a Bachelor of Biotechnology full time, and heading into an Honours project for 2018, it will remain a hobby that allows me to connect with the community and bring joy to people's lives."

VOTE

22 | Sense magazine

SENSE magazine interviewed some current UoN students who support Same Sex Marriage. They discuss their beliefs and reasoning behind their YES vote.

23 | The Springtide Issue

"Rationally, the definition of marriage should be shaped by the values and structure of the evolving society it pertains to, and such laws cannot target or exclude a demographic based on prejudices. Emotionally, love is love and I hold close the belief that no human is greater than another." - Izzy McLeod Bachelor of Biomedical Science

"Everyone deserves equal human rights, and the idea there are people opposed to that simple fact is a notion I cannot wrap my head around. I'm voting yes for my friends and family who are told that they are not equal to me in the eyes of the law, simply based on who they fall in love with." - Declan Armitage Bachelor of Primary Education (Honours)

"We should be embracing equality on all levels and I believe it's a basic human right to allow someone to legally recognise their relationship, no matter the gender." Love is love." - Edwina Wornes Bachelor of Visual Communications Design

"I voted yes because love to me is shared between young and old, between family, between friends and between soul mates. Love should not have restrictions, and neither should marriage." - Rosie Fizelle Bachelor of Physiotherapy

29 | The Springtide Issue

30 | Sense magazine

"For me, marriage equality in Australia is about just that; equality. It is about recognition in the eyes of the law that the love we share as same-sex couples is equal to the love shared by heterosexual couples and as such we should be treated with the same respect and be allowed the same privileges that the union of marriage provides in this country."

I have fallen heart and soul in love with someone of the same-sex. All I can think about is getting married, building a home, starting a family and growing old together. Currently in this country we would not be recognised as lawfully equal to a heterosexual couple, and this discrimination and undeniable inequality nags at in the back of the mind of every member of the LGBTQI+ community in Australia.

Marriage equality is a reality for this country, no matter the results of the plebiscite... be on the right side of history and say yes to equality for all members of our communities." - Zach Schmakeit Bachelor of Biotechnology

y n o l o M t n a Gr r e t n i a P k n I d n a r e h p a r g o t o h Ocean P

Recently I got to talk to the very talented local artist, Grant Molony about his artwork and practise as well as discovering what kind of things inspire him. His amazing photographs and ink paintings are displayed at his gallery inside Lucky Surf & Supply. You can grab a coffee and some snacks while appriciating his artworks 7 days a week, located at 3/147 The Entrance Road, Long Jetty. 34 | Sense magazine

What would you say makes your art unique? Um, I think art is just a reflection of yourself and your environment so everything is kind of unique, even though we all have influences. It’s just a long growing process to find your own style I guess, where people can see it and then recognise it as your work. Did it take a long time for you to find that style? Yeah definitely, I’m still... you’re still always learning though, there’s no end point. For me it’s my environment and lifestyle that inspire me and develop it continuously. As far as artstyle, for me its just grown from just drawing in pencil and constantly trying to find something darker; so lead and then you go into pens and then into ink and then into acrylics and basically just trying to find the blackest black I can. So ontop of your envirnoment and lifestyle what are some key things that inspire you? Like I said, definitely the envirmonent, where we live [The Central Coast] is a pretty beautiful place. But I would say nature, the ocean and surf, family, things that are unique to us. I guess also things with eyes are always in my works, as a continuous theme even though I dont really plan it - like in my paintings of animals and portraits. Where do you go when you need to find some inspiration? Oh the ocean for sure, going for a surf or even just a swim, taking photos of the sea is always a big help. Also spending time with family, especially my daughter, and just relaxing. Taking time away from my studio and the pressure helps me to get over a block. Do you think the location of your gallery generates a particular audience? Yep! I’ve only just recently moved my studio here from the corner shops at Foresters Beach, a much more secluded spot. But I love it here, I get a lot more passing traffic stopping in. Also Long Jetty is becoming such a cultural little part of the coast so I see a lot of young creatives like yourself coming in. Particularly because I’m attached to the little surf and coffee shop it brings in a lot of regular locals. It’s such a laid back environment too, I mean how many people can say they get to wear thongs to work!

How do you think local youth reacts to your art? I think my art style suits young people a lot more because it's not so tradtional and conformed. How old were you when you first discovered your love of art? Pretty young, very young. I dont know exactly when but I used to just sketch and growing up it was, for me, just such an easy hobby to pick up. When there was no surf, it was something for me to do, to fill my day. I could pick up a pencil and paper and not be bored. And was it much later that you decided to pursue a career from it? Yeah, I would say so. After I finished school I went travelling and when I came home I really didnt want to get into some boring job and that just kinda lead to this. Did you study at uni after you finished school? Nah, I thought about it but yeah I travelled instead. Do you think that effected your work at all? No, I dont think so, everyone learns in different ways and a lot of peoples creative abilities really come out at uni, but for me being self taught is what makes my work. I developed my own unique style that isnt constrained by rules or teachings - I think thats what makes everyones art unique; the mistakes. If you could go back to when you were more of a young, amatuer artist and give yourself some advice, what would it be? Uh, thats a good one. I probably wouldnt change anything because thats kind of the process of how you learn. I look back at a lot of work from when I was younger and even when I first started selling some of my stuff and I think it looks really bad, but thats all part of the building you know. I think that probably half of being an artist is not letting work that you’re not happy with effect your process but also to make sure it doesn’t leave your studio or be sold, to ensure quality. What about to others youg artists hoping to follow a similar path? Just practise, just do it. Theres no rules, just find what inspires you and do it for yourself and see where it goes. Try and get your work out there if thats what you want to do but most importantly, just do it for you.

Your favorite festival of the spring is just around the corner but you have no clue what to pair it with! We're here to help. The weather is finally warm enough to rock that brand new maxi dress you've been waiting all year to wear, so what better time than now to finally dig it out. Trends this Spring 2017 consist of crotchet patterns white, black or nude. Another hot trend is off the shoulder blouses that add just enough warmth for the cooler nights if paired with oversized denim or bomber jackets. And don't forget that flower crown! Subtle daisies, or over embellished diamond encrusted crowns - it's your choice!

summer festival fashion When summer comes the late nights begin! When attending these awesome weekend or week-long festivals it's a great idea to be comfy and cool yet protect yourself against the sun. It's tempting to bare all in backless bodysuits or quirky bras, yet it's still important to stay protected from those harsh summer rays. Opt for a beautiful patterned kimono to cover up or even a wide brimmed hat - after all, they are right on trend. Experiment with funky sunglasses - they will also do your eyes some good! And, as always, don't forget to slap on that sunscreen. Nothing is worse than a bright red face for the entirety of your festival time.
