The Moment I Wake Up

Undressing the Process The design development process is where you put your creativity on paper. As with any art, there is no right or wrong way.

Consumers "Start off by researching everything there is to know about your target customer and learn everything about them."

T o s t a r t o f f , i t ’s b e s t t o b e g i n by researching everything there is to know about your target customer. You first identify her/him and try and learn everything about them: demographically, psychographically, and everything in between from the moment they wake up to where they hang out, the things they do and why they do it, their likes and dislikes, etc. Identify your competition as well and visit the shops where those labels & lines are being sold and check them out.

This is another great way to get a glimpse of your customer as well! Once you know who your target is, you can identify your concept or inspiration. It can be anything from colour, a period in time, a structure or architecture, a smell, a quote, a muse. Once you have identified your concept or inspiration, the next step is to research everything about it, like you did for your target customer. Identify the season you are designing for: Spring/Summer, Resort/Cruise, Autumn/Winter, etc.

Concept

While you’re doing your research, start collecting a series of images from which you can draw a mood and key colours. The mood and key colours will be used as reference for choosing the fabrics that will be appropriate for the season and market you are designing for. Once you have this, identify shapes or silhouettes within the mood and images collected. Begin by experimenting with the shapes, silhouettes and colour/ fabric combinations through a series of sketches. When you reach this point, you have officially started the design process.

Textiles The design development process is where you put your creativity on paper. During this process, ask yourself questions like: are there clean lines in your concept? Or should there be a print? Take silhouettes and play with different shapes and volumes. Alternatively, take a simple shape like a triangle or a rectangle and see how you can play around with it so it fits on the body. Go back and forth between sketches and experimenting with fabric on the mannequin. Like a sculptor, there is no right or wrong way to the design development process. It should be fun for you and a time for you to really express yourself and experiment. Just make sure you have exhausted all your ideas before the editing process begins. From 50 sketches to 25 to 15. Always display your best work.

to a tee. The simple tee is undeniably and fundamentally a wardrobe staple for just about any woman of today. The t-shirt can be viewed as being just as essential as the music on your iPod – the t-shirt is one item we must not be without.

.

The humble t-shit’s original origin and purpose was as a mere undergarment, yet today it is a revered classic look. Pair a tee with jeans and you can not go wrong.

A t-shirt is the underpinning of any wardrobe, and as simple as it may seem, the classic tee lends itself to any array of choices and styles. From crew to scalloped, from plunge to high, from capped to long, the variations of the classic tee means there is always a firm place for them in everyone’s closet. As the saying goes, ‘you can never have enough t-shirts’, which is indeed very true as the t-shirt suits whatever the weather, be it a layer under a coat in winter or on it’s own throughout the warmer months. Take the approach that the t-shirt is your canvas and you are the artist, to which you can create a mirage of beauty. For example, when the summer months draw in, a t-shirt can be easily customised. Rolling up the sleeves for example, can effortlessly look chic, transforming your entire look immediately.

The simplicity of the minimalistic draped t-shirt that skims the frame of the body will often denote sophistication and can even transcend to office wear. It is hard to find any other item of clothing that can create so many varied expressions and styles like the t-shirt can. A wardrobe staple such as a classic tee is a survivor for any fashion crisis moments. Like the ‘little black dress’, the ‘little white tee’ can be dependable in any situation. The versatile t-shirt can indeed be paired with just about anything, from your faithful denim jeans to your grunge leathers or tucked into a skirt. A large oversized masculine tee can even double as a simple dress. The basic tee however, can transform any outfit into anything but basic – the t-shirt is the key addition to any ensemble, just add a few accessories or some light layers and Viola! Essential, timeless pieces such as the classic t-shirt are worthy investments that will outshine any fad-trends, lasting season after season. Designer favourites such as minimal fundamentalists Alexander Wang and Christophe Lemaire may come up with a significantly higher price tag, however, these gentlemen certainly know how to create the perfect everyday garments. Nevertheless, let us not forget you can also find a good range of t-shirts at many high street shops nowadays. With all of today’s wide choices, you’ll never be short in the t-shirt department, that’s for sure.

the under tee

This is a must, especially with this season being all about layering tees under anything. But there are certain types of tees that work best for this. Fit is essential with this tee - go fitted & crew neck and avoid boxy shapes to stop too much fabric bunching under your over-garment. Depending on your body type, aim for either a cap sleeve or a longer, more fitted sleeve and stick to these tees in solid tones or simple stripes. Wear under slips, camisoles, dungarees & full skirts.

22

the classic tee

This classic will change for everyone depending on your body type/personal preference. For me, my classic needs to have a high neck line (usually crew neck) and a boxy silhouette. Get this in every colour, even multiples and pay attention to fabrics. Personally I love a 100% Cotton or a Cotton/Linen Blend as they don’t cling or drape, but are more relaxed in style. A rayon blend usually drapes more around your body. I love wearing this style with denim, jeans or an a-line skirts.

the graphic tee

I think a lot of people are scared of a graphic tee but it is one of my favourite ways to communicate my mood. I remember a few years ago, I was about to do my first big speech in front of a cinema full of industry people and I was terrified. So I popped on a Hansen & Gretel tee which had in huge bold font ‘CEASE FIRE’ - I felt it was fitting. Either keep it simple, bold, witty or smart with these tees and french is always a good idea.

24

the striped tee

This style of tee needs no introduction. My personal favourite stripe is navy with equal ratio of stripe to white space but I have also been loving a red stripe of late. Get your stripes in all tees- short, 3/4 and long shapes and pair back with pretty much anything. If you’re feeling up to it, add a polka dot into the mix but stick with the same colour way. My favourite way to wear this is with an a-line midi skirt *am I french yet?

the going out tee

This tee solves my only problem with tees, sometimes they just aren’t dressy enough for some occasions. This is where a special kind of tee comes in handy. Look for fabrics that have a unique texture like silks, lace or mesh and go for something that has more of a drape to the shape of the tee. Stay away from any graphics.

Suitcase secrets from our most beloved cover girls There is something possibly romantic about packing. About the promise of a new destination, or just up and leaving not knowing exactly what it is you’ll come face to face with. Be it a near religious ritual practised weeks in advance, or an eleventh hour mercy dash, it’s a much more simple act - it’s an art form. The elsewhere; imagine it, see yourself there, be there. It is this, the packing and the endless possibilities that we are most interested in. The dos and don’ts. How do you make your leather jacket fit, how do you remember the one thing you ALWAYS seem to forget. We asked those whom travel is second nature, an art they have long practised. Three of our most adored cover girls, always on the move. This is how they do it.

MimiElishiry Here one day, gone the next

Walk us through your packing rituals? Unfortunately I always end up packing the night before or morning off – if I try any earlier I usually get distracted by food, my bed or my boyfriend. Any packing disasters? I once lost an entire bag full of everything I had ever loved at a café in amsterdamn a while back. Cameras full of film, jewerlly, channel lipsticks. Girls never leave all of your favourite things in the one place at the one time – you’ll lose it and never get it back. Favourite thing about travelling? Literally everything but in particular hotel breakfast’s and new tattoos! For every new place i visit, i get a neat little tattoo to remember it by. What would we we’d find in a models carry on? Lots of plain white tees for castings, blue high waisted skinny jeans (a must), whacky sunglasses, lists of manager contact details that we’ve forgotten, earphones, magazines and ipads to get us through long casting and shooting days, comfy shoes and our image portfolios.

Gemma Ward The worlds worst packer

Walk us through your packing rituals? The only way I have tackled this ungodly task is to put on my bed everything i would like to take and then create as many outfits as possible. Always, always be prepared for a lovely dinner, walking for hours on end,a sneaky trip to the night club and an unexpected weather change. Any tips on packing shoes? I always pack a pair of converse, some boots or heels depending on what events/outings i have planned and a pair of thongs to be on the safe side! What from your carry on gets you through boring plane trips? A good magazine or two, headphones for crying babies, comfy bralettes, all of my camera and lenses and my laptop of course, pictures of my dog, comfy oversized tees. Lots of gum! A cushiony neck rest. Nude lipsticks, pen and paper. Setting spray. Kohl eyeliner - the list goes on. Anywhere in particular you’d like to visit next? Defiently in need of a trip to Santorini. I’m a big lover of tropical places! I also wouldn’t mind a shop in melbourne, or even a quick swim at byron.

It goes without saying that we yearn for youthful,

blemish-free skin that makes heads turn. Its completely normal, fair and reasonable. At our fingertips are all sorts of incredible products- treatments, tinctures, oils and foods- to help us achieve it. However, we can use all the products and eat all thve good food we like and still never resolve what may be the cause of lacklustre, problematic skin. In many cases, the root of the issue is the interaction of our hormones, which represents an honest reflection of our lifestyle. Addressing lifestyle factors is without question the more challenging way to move forward and find our glow; yet its also the most pertinent, as the same issues will keep resurfacing until we do. Out bodies are incredibly smart machines and there’s no one component that simply works on its own. Communication is finely turned between each of the systems, all of the organs and within the miniscule cells that make us who we are. When one element is thrown out of balance, by life stressors for example, this sends signals throughout our body to respond accordingly. Given stress affects so many of us, its vital to understand how it unfolds and the effects it has on our body and the beauty of our skin. Stress has been to cause premature ageing of skin, among other damaging effects. There are serums, antioxidant-rich creams and vitamins aplenty we can take to combat the effects of oxidative stress and the damage it causes to the cells in our bodyincluding our precious skin cells – but the fundamental issue remains.

When the body goes through stress, our endocrine, or hormone, system is triggered, producing an adrenal response, injecting adrenaline, and triggering the release of our major stress hormone, cortisol. As cortisol is elicited, it sends a cascading effect throughout our endocrine system and can create an imbalance in the production of androgens- sex hormones. Nutritionally, we investigate and treat the state of sex hormones and digestion when problematic skin arises, and implement stress management practices. One of the more common scenarios we see looks like this: work, emotional and life stress comes into force, individuals sleep less (stress increases), feel exhausted and drink coffee (triggering the release of adrenaline and the stress response again); for a period of time they can exist, but cravings for quick energy fixes creep in and, because the brain isn’t functioning at its peak (fatigue, deprived nutrition and stress), we make poor food choices. As time progresses, this becomes a pattern, or just a way of existing. There’s no longer a beautiful song between the hormones within the endocrine system but a screaming fight for survival as cortisol, insulin and our sex hormones- oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone for women- are thrown out of balance. As this happens, hormones begin producing a range of symptoms and inflammatory responses throughout the body. On the skin these present as dehydration, oiliness (from overactive sebaceous oil glands), eczema and breakouts on the forehead, cheekbones and around the chin and jawbone. When this happens the individual may notice where once they felt vibrant and saw a glow in their skin, they have now lost their energy and their skin has become dull. It becomes increasingly difficult for them to face themselves in the mirror, so the inevitable go-to is a perceived quick-fix solution. This fix generally comes in the form of topical skin care, maybe diving into an intense detox (or perhaps the polar opposite), or going to the doctor and hopping on some sort of drug to resolve the issue at hand. And yet a quick fix wont resolve what’s triggered it all: stress.

46

If stress causes this spiral of reactions in the body, then stress should be the fundamental aspect we treat when it comes to skin health and beauty, before any creams, tinctures, detoxes, pills or supplements come into play. Because health is holistic and we must always approach it this way. Retraining yourself to think differently about how you manage life’s challenges, how you implement practices to manage stress and the way you speak to yourself will have a huge impact on your luminosity. Once this step is taken, all those other beautiful nourishing ingredients of life fall into place because the body is ready to respond. When stress is reduced and well-managed the load on our hormones is reduced and these hormones can perform the way they were programmed to. This is when our bodies can sincerely absorb the nourishment coming from all elements of our lifestyle- movement, food, companionship, nature, family. They begin to thrive, and it shows before anything else in the glow of our skin. That’s when we flourish, when we’re radiating beauty from the inside and out.

The Moment I Wake Up A few of our favourite faces tell the health and beauty secrets they live by.

FAUX | The EXPOSURE Issue 2016

54

Being happy, healthy and feeling comfortable and confident in your own body. My mum always told me to look after my skin. For me, it’s more about a lifestyle than any crazy products... wear sunscreen, eat lots of good things, drink water, work out, know your body and how it reacts, clean your face all the time when you are in the city, lots of moisturiser... and basically no makeup.

Fly Right Avery Blanchard

With work and travel, I have found that the best thing to di is to stay moisturised and hydrated. Airplanes are very drying, so before the plane takes off, I put on a deep moisturising face msak and some leave in conditioner.

56

My most recent secret would have to be steam rooms for their detoxifying benefits. After a workout, or at the end of the day, 10 to 20 minutes of sweating out toxins from the body feels great. The steam also opens up the skin’s pores, getting rid of impurities, especially blackheads, and softening the skin. It’s a win-win for both health and beauty!

Your skin is your largest organ so it’s important to feed it with nutrients and not toxic chemicals. This is why I’m so passionate about KORA OrganicsEvery product is full of powerful, natural, certified organic ingredients to assist your skin to be the healthiest it can be. Healthy skin is beautiful skin.

58

It’s not really a secret, but maybe more of a mother/daughter moment. When I was a kid, my mum always told me that rain would make you look beautiful. Of course I thought she really meant rain, but (as I got older I realised) what she meant by that expression. My mum’s words are that you need to accept that sometimes there are good beauty days and bad beauty days. In other words, there can always be sunshine. My tip to look beautiful is to feel beautiful, starting from the outside, working your way out.

Wash First, Always Madison Stubbington

I’m always washing my fruit and vegetables, no matter where I get them from. I made it a habit after reading an article when I was younger, which was all about pesticides. Plus, if you think of the journey our produce goes through before we eat it, then a quick rinse seems like a logical idea.
