ITALIAN Roots in Sicily, journey through St. Louis, hearts in Texas!
Lomonte’s-Your Neighborhood
ITALIAN Restaurant
F
or seven years, the family-owned Lomonte’s Italian Restaurant has been making a home in Richmond, Texas. Friends and neighbors have long enjoyed the easy ambience and marvelous food, some of which carries the authentic flavors of “The Hill,” that traditional Italian enclave of St. Louis, Mo. where the Lomonte family’s American story began...but the true story has its roots in Sicily. “My Sicilian grandmother Antonina Lomonte brought her own recipes from her home in Licata, Sicily,” says Braden Lomonte. “She inspired my family to open the first Lomonte’s Italian Restaurant in Houston in 1986...and it’s still in operation today. Over seven years ago, Jason Tatlonghari and I opened our Fort Bend’s location. Now longtime regulars of the Houston Lomonte’s know they will still find many of the same timeless dishes prepared in Grandma’s tradition right here in our Pecan Grove neighborhood. Bring your friends and family to share traditional Southern Italian meals always served with a smile.” Chef Jason aka “J.T.” loves knowing that Lomonte’s has become the ‘go-to’ place for families and friends to enjoy time together. He says, “We’re a local place, so we’re proud to have plenty of local wines and craft beers at our bar. We’ve always got some guys hanging out for the game, ladies having a night out, or friends getting together after work. Personally, I don’t think you can beat a deep dish Sicilian pizza, a good brew, and a good game in a good atmosphere...especially if you keep it local by finishing with a Chocolate Chip/Pecan Pie and Texas Blue Bell ice cream a la mode.” What gives Lomonte’s such a family feel? “It all comes down to our guests,” says Braden. “They’re what really matters to us. We like
to suggest dishes they’ll enjoy like our favorite Catfish Picante with our made-in-house Louisiana style picante sauce and Fettucini Alfredo. Then sometimes our customers suggest something we’ll enjoy, too, like a dish on our menu inspired by a long-time regular, Phil Lindblade. The Phil’s Baked Pasta includes sliced Italian sausage, mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, and black olives in a spicy tomato cream sauce, topped with mozzarella cheese and baked to perfection.” “Being a neighborhood restaurant means you’ll see us all over town: whether we’re working with local charities, sponsoring area school events or catering at-home dinners. In fact, if you want a special Italian meal at home, it’s as easy as giving us a call. We deliver throughout the area, and this brings us even closer to our neighbors!” Classic Sicilian or a new favorite, with friends in a cozy dining room or at home with family, come see why Lomonte’s has been a favorite for Italian lovers across Fort Bend County. Braden says, “Our roots may be in Sicily and our journey went through St. Louis, but our heart’s right here in Texas!” Lomonte’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria 281-232-8290 815 Plantation Drive Richmond, Texas 77469 www.lomontesrestaurant.com Mon-Thurs: 5:00–9:30 pm Fri. 5:00–10:30 pm Sun 4:00–9:00 pm

by Amy Sharp he burgers are hand-formed MONSTERS!” “A local joint with regional selections and nothing prepackaged!” “Check ‘em out…a pleasant surprise!” That’s what your neighbors are saying about Texas Mesquite Grill...and we couldn’t wait to tell you! Owner and Katy resident for more than a decade, Austin Yates has created a menu highlighting dishes Texans have come to expect in neighborhood joints--jalapenos, burgers, ribs, Tex-Mex, shrimp and catfish--with popular specials on the weekends like surf-and-turf! Austin’s business model is simple––he promises to make the food as fresh and local as possible. “I promise that the freshest ingredients are on your plate every single time….it’s a promise that definitely comes at a cost,” says Austin, “It requires carefully scheduled and more frequent deliveries. But I know it’s what sets us apart and I have no plans to change our philosophy!” Grab a seat inside or on the spacious patio and enjoy complementary“Texas Caviar”—candied jalapeno and cheese dip! Save room, appetizers like the Fifty/Fifty—a mix of fried pickles and Texas Armadillo’s (fried jalapeno sticks)—are to die for and you still have to get to the main course. Austin says, “We’ve got plenty of ‘backyard gourmet’ choices, but I think it’s hard to beat a great burger and beer!” September’s Football Time in Houston! Texas Mesquite Grill is a proud supporter of the Houston Texans. Yates says, “When the Texans are playing, we show the game on three huge projector screens and twelve flat screens! Be sure to call ahead and reserve a table for your party!” With more than twenty years experience (including time as General Manager at Pappas), Austin has created a neighborhood hangout with the biggest and brightest flavors in Texas cuisine. Austin says, “Drop in anytime for a meal or call to set up catering...we can’t wait to meet and serve you!”

A Sweet Step Back in Time
T
ired of the hustle and bustle of meals in paper bags and indoor playgrounds? Do you long for a place where you can gather just to have a soda and homemade food? Look no fur ther! At Another Time Soda Fountain and Cafe on the corner of Third Street and Avenue F in Rosenberg you step back to a sweeter time! Owner Renee Butler says, “This building has been a working soda fountain since the 1920s—only closed in 92-93. Since gaining ownership, we’ve done renovations to restore it to its original architecture. There’s a high counter and bar stools where you can watch our Soda Jerks prepare traditional fountain drinks. Wood tables and benches fill the restaurant…a quaint space for you and family and friends to sit back, visit, and relax!”
But the space isn’t the only thing restored to its original style! Renee says, “All of our formulas are from a 1950’s Soda Jerk. Everything is true to the soda fountain’s past…from the perfect hot fudge sauce to expertly blended malts and shakes. We have good ‘ole one pound banana splits and ice cream sodas. And who remembers phosphates from the depression era? Treat yourself to a little taste of history!” Stop in between 11:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. Wednesday through Sunday and enjoy the daily Blue Plate Special--entrees like meatloaf, pot roast, and chicken spaghetti are served with fresh vegetables. You’ll also find handmade hamburgers and fresh squeezed lemonade. Or come in for dinner Friday or
Saturday night! Renee says, “We make everything from scratch, so come in early for the Blue Plate Special, because it always goes quickly. Be sure to save room for dessert…after all, this is a soda fountain!” Renee’s efforts to resurrect a simpler time haven’t gone unnoticed. Her historic renovation won “Best Physical Improvement: Best Commercial Interior” for the state, awarded by the Texas Downtown Association. But perhaps even more endearing…an elderly couple stopped in, sat at the counter and ordered ice cream sodas. After the first sip the man looked up with a twinkle in his eye and said, “I haven’t had an ice cream soda like this in 50 years!” Another Time Soda Fountain and Cafe 281-232-2999 800 Third Street Rosenberg, Texas 77471 www.anothertimesodafountain.com

ith over twenty years as a “Sushi Man” and two previous restaurants (Kaneyama and Sushi King) under his belt, finally Keeper Lin’s bringing his inventive cuisine to Fort Bend. Sushi-lovers and food aficionados like Chef Frederic Perrier of Aura are gathering at Keeper’s Japanese Restaurant and Bar to enjoy mouth-watering, fresh food in a welcoming atmosphere perfect for lunch or dinner anytime! What makes Keeper’s a restaurant where chefs love to eat? Quality! Keeper uses only Tamaki Gold rice, the number one best-selling rice in Japan and the freshest fish he personally chooses daily at the fish market. He says, “In the early morning I go out to choose the best fish, but if something like sea urchin comes in later, they’ll give me a call. I’ve made a trip to the fish company at midnight, just to be sure I got the freshest seafood. For quality, you can’t just place an order over the phone...you have to inspect it yourself!” Start your meal with Dobin Mushi, a soup that melts away stress while whetting your appetite. Drink the fragrant broth out of the little cup, then open the dobin (like a little teapot) and eat the sweet morsels of Sashimi-grade red snapper, fresh clam, shrimp, fishcake, chicken, shitaki mushroom and a gingko nut...good for the memory. Want a roll to remember? You can’t be Texan without trying the Cowboy: tuna or salmon and avocado inside topped with blackened beef, four colors of tobiko (flying fish roe in ruby, black, wasabi, and golden yuzu) and cowboy sauce with a serious kick! For something a little sweeter, pick the Skydiver: soft-shell crab and cucumber inside, topped with unagi, avocado, sesame, and eel sauce. Why not cool down with a Blood Orange Martini or Watermelon Mojito from Keeper’s amazing mixologist, Tia? Then heat things up again with beef or tuna Hobayaki topped with miso-sesame paste with cashew nuts and onions and served on a hot volcanic stone...deliciously dramatic! Keeper says, “We’d like to invite you to our Happy Hour all day everyday. We are adding more options than before with appetizers, hand rolls and even more sushi to choose from! We’ll also offer drink specials everyday from 4-7, 9-close, and all day Saturday and Sunday!” Enter Keeper’s Japanese Restaurant and Bar and the smiling hostess, the sushi chefs, and the servers will greet you with the Japanese welcome, “Irashaimase!” You’ll find the perfect meal, whether you prefer sushi, sashimi, teriyaki, tempura, noodles or a selection in the Bento Box lunch sampler. Keeper says, “My chefs Freddie and Juan and I all understand and passionately respect Japanese culture. We love living and working in Fort Bend...and our Japanese spirit comes through in the food we make and serve to you.” Keeper’s Japanese Restaurant & Bar 281-242-0389 4654 Highway 6 South, Sugar Land, TX 77478 www.keeperssushi.com

f you’ve ever visited the Pacific Ocean, you’ve noticed the difference. In a league of its own, it’s an ocean boasting attitude and edge. That’s what Lincoln and Lyndsay Ward have created at Sugar Land’s hottest new eatery, Pacific Coast Tacos. Pacific Coast Tacos is an original concept by Lincoln and Lyndsay. Lyndsay says, “People always ask if PCT is a franchise? Proudly we can say, ‘No.’ This is our original idea born right here in Sugar Land TX!” “We wanted to bring something different to this community,” says Lincoln. “We, along with our team leaders Robby and Dana Bulian, put in a ton of research in the Pacific Rim, bringing in flavors from the West Coast of the States down to Mexico and South America. The menu reflects influences from Thailand, Korea, Vietnam, Hawaii and French Polynesia.” Lincoln and Lyndsay introduce an inventive and ambitious concept the culinary world hasn’t seen in Pacific Coast Tacos. This concept is truly cutting edge

and forward thinking in menu and design. Pacific Rim influences such as Poke Bowls, Won Ton Lobster Tacos, and Tom Kha Soup compliment a collection of the most flavorful and unique tacos anywhere. Fresh Pacific Ceviche’ and PCTs signature Guac topped with fresh mango, jicama, green apple and radish exemplify the creativeness of PCTs culinary identity. “Taco ’bout Tacos?” Enjoy the Korean Beef Taco. CAB beef sliced fresh and soaked in scratch bulgogi marinade, seared to perfection and topped with shredded napa cabbage, cilantro, sliced radish, scallion, citrus soy, and chili sauce served in a fresh sliced jicama tortilla. Other popular selections are the Pacific Octopus Taco, the Hawaiian Kalua Pork Taco, and the Thai Chili Chicken Taco which calls for a unique scratch Thai marinade created by Lyndsay. Lyndsay combines exotic Thai herbs and spices producing an amazing depth of flavor. This taco is topped with sprouts, julienned carrots, cilantro, peanut sauce, chili sauce, fried jalapenos, and served on a fresh sliced jicama tortilla.

This scratch kitchen is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But you’ll find no walk-in cooler or freezer at Pacific Coast Tacos... the freshest herbs, spices, fruits, vegetables, and proteins available are delivered daily. GM Robby Bulian, who has also contributed to the Pacific inspired menu, says, “Our team arrives as early as 5am to make the corn and flour tortillas by hand for the day.” PCT’s signature jicama tortillas are sliced fresh from the root vegetable, and the wide selection of salsas at the salsa bar are also made from scratch daily. Equally on par with the fantastic food is the full bar at Pacific Coast Tacos. We’re talking atmosphere and selection. Falling in line with the quality of the food served is an excellent selection of cocktails, margaritas, beer, and wine. Natural agaves are infused with fresh fruits, vegetables, and peppers right in the kitchen. This bar is also all about mezcals and tequila. Lincoln and Robby agree, “We are super excited to introduce unique tequila and mezcal flights to the Fort Bend community! Tequila and mezcal have so much to offer with
unique brands and distilling processes. They are truly amazing spirits enjoying a height in popularity and renaissance.” Enlighten your palate with refreshing cocktails such as the PCT Watermelon Cocktail and the Zesty Strawberry cocktail, both inspired by renowned bar/cocktail specialist Justin Nobriago at Malibu Farms in Malibu, California. Red and Rosé Sangrias, along with a quality over quantity selection of margaritas, are also available. Let’s talk design! Spacious and clean with arguably the best atmosphere in Sugar Land, PCT boasts a semi-open air kitchen design with large garage doors opening to a covered patio highlighting the natural waters of Sugar Creek. Eye-catching materials such as contrasting Italian tiles, white-washed shiplap, and custom metal framing create an edgy and energetic vibe reflecting the innovative and ambitious works of local architect Robert White. “Working with Robert and sharing our vision of Pacific Coast Tacos was an amazing experience,” say Lincoln and Lyndsay. “It was inventive, organic, and adventurous all at once!” Of course, Lincoln is no stranger to the restaurant world. He started as a dishwasher at Captains Half Shell Oyster Bar at age 17. After working nearly every position in the restaurant biz, he had numerous manager stints in both Sugar Land and Houston. Lincoln took his first swing at creating, operating and growing a concept seven and a half years ago with The Rouxpour. He hit that one out of the park! “It was an exciting time for my wife and I, and a wonderful learning experience,” says Lincoln. “We hope the team we created there maintains the systems and philosophies we put into place so they can continue to experience success.” Pacific Coast Tacos caters and hosts events both at the restaurant and off-site. While influenced by the Pacific Rim, all recipes were created by Lincoln and Lyndsay Ward with help from their incredible team. “We did a ton of tastings over the years,” says Lincoln. “Our kids—Denzel, Abigail and Lauryn—would complain, ‘Not tacos again!’” The Ward family and team have two new concepts on the “back burner” for Sugar Land to get excited about for 2019-2020. We can’t wait to hear what they’re taste testing now!

A Work of Art Imagine a place
where you can hang out with friends and try cool wines without intimidation. A lounge community with a “non-judgy” vibe. No TVS, no clocks...just fun! This is what Paul and Nichole Killingsworth have created with Fort Bend’s own, Vino & Vinyl. Paul says, “Many years ago, Nichole and I went to a local wine bar and were told to go to the back of the line until we found something we liked. We were young and inexperienced, and didn’t feel welcome. Vino & Vinyl is different. Here, what we want is for you to have an ‘a-ha’ moment with wine. Something so incredible...something you’ve never had before. We help you through that process.” It’s a concept that works. Nichole and Paul—a certified sommelier—first opened the Missouri City Vino & Vinyl as a wine shop and record store. But when they learned customers wanted to stay and hang out…they converted to an incredibly successful wine bar. Last month, Vino & Vinyl’s second location opened in Sugar Land’s Town Square. “Our wines are from small family producers,” continues Paul. “Wines you just can’t get in a grocery store. We love the ‘New California,’ where the wine is in more of a ‘French’ style. All of them are handmade and many are organic and sustainably grown. The best wines are a true sense of someone’s farming…because the farmers are the real stars. Small vineyards have a voice—a character of their own— and the best wines let that voice shine through. We don’t want it manipulated with artificial flavors and colors and fake acids and tannins.” Vino & Vinyl is a true work of art. In addition to the best wine, local art is featured on the walls and you’ll hear the best vinyl music around. Paul grew up in a musical family and was a professional bass player out of college. “We choose artists that

create a good lounge environment. Some of the old stuff, but also lots of independents not on the radio.” Have some of your own favorites? Wednesday is BYOV (bring your own vinyl) night! This artful intersection of great wine and music would not be complete without fabulous food. At the Town Square location, seasoned world traveler chef Tori Bergersen has created a bistro menu that pairs well with wine and pays homage to the diversity of Fort Bend County. In addition to cheese and meat boards (that are served on hand-crafted wood by Paul’s father), diners will find an Asian inspired rice bowl, an Indian-spiced appetizer, paninis, flatbreads and even an Italian cast iron skillet meatball…plus a Chef’s Feature entree every evening. In addition to fabulous wine, Vino & Vinyl serves more than 30 bottled beers. Want this wine at home? Join Club Vino and get hand selected bottles every month that fit your taste and budget, plus a free pass to the monthly pickup party, 10% off your entire bill every time you hang out at Vino & Vinyl, and an additional 10% off wines to go. Whether you step into the Missouri City or Sugar Land Vino & Vinyl, you get a real sense of community. They are in the business of converting guests into friends, and friends into family. Sarah Warburton f your taste buds are tired, they need a treat. Why save fresh food and fine dining for special occasions only? Fort Bend business owner Ray Salti has developed some of our favorite local restaurants and when he realized this community needed a place that celebrated local meats and produce with a true “farm to table” concept, he called on renowned Danish chef, Soren Pedersen. Together they created a perfect blend of fabulous food and an amazing wine selection. Got friends with a real zest for fresh food? Meet up with them at Ray’s Gourmet Country. All the meats served here are locally farmraised and organic or natural. The tomatoes in these pictures? Grown less than five miles away. Whether you enjoy a fried green tomato appetizer or cherry tomatoes roasted next to a mouthwatering buffalo strip, supporting local growers never tasted so good! Soren says, “We designed this menu to enhance the true flavor of food, not to cover it up. We’re passionate about choosing the ripest seasonal produce, the highest quality local meats, and the freshest seafood, so you can really taste and enjoy the food we serve.” “I grew up in Denmark eating fresh, seasonal food,” Soren says. “Ray and I take great pleasure in giving our patrons imaginative, creative dishes with fantastic ingredients. Our menu changes with the seasons and we have daily seafood specials based on the actual ‘catch of the day’ at our local market. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays we offer a special ‘economy-friendly’ blackboard menu of specials I designed as a mid-week treat.”

So, we compromised, I kept my job, and started catering small parties.” Wes was an in-home chef for 10 years...and today, with the kids out of college, is living his dream. His son, Cameron, works alongside him as the expeditor and kitchen manager. Cajun Cuisine is made-from-scratch Cajun dining at its finest. Favorites include Crawfish Etouffee, Shrimp and Grits, Bone-In Pork Chops with Spiced Apple Gravy and BBQ Shrimp. Save room for Wes’ quintessential New Orleans’ desserts...the White Chocolate Bread Pudding with Dark Chocolate Kahlua Sauce or his Creme Brulee will have you coming back for more! As they say, the devil is in the details; that attention to detail is evident in both the food and the interior of Wes’ restaurant. “I designed an atmosphere that emphasizes the history and beauty of New Orleans and South Louisiana. The blue stone surround on the fireplace dates to 1875. It’s from an old mansion torn down in 1982 to make room for the 1984 World’s Fair held in New Orleans. The bar top is from a 125 year old Cypress tree. The government no longer allows harvest of this old growth cypress in Louisiana. We were lucky to purchase this piece from a tree that fell during Hurricane Katrina.” And there’s more...100 year old cypress arches, a custom
trumpet light built by Wes and his family, and decorative nods to Mardi Gras and Bourbon Street...just to name a few! Wes and his family have truly brought a piece of New Orleans--both the cuisine and the ambiance--to a fantastic location right on the Grand Parkway. Stop in and enjoy a fabulous night out!

Texas Soul With a

here’s a reason family-owned Clancy’s Public House on FM 359 in Richmond was recently voted “Best New Restaurant in Fort Bend County.” They dish out Texas-sized portions of your favorites with an Irish twist—a nod to the family’s heritage. “It’s what I’ve always wanted to do,” says owner Sean Bielstein. “When I was a little kid I would watch my dad barbeque...and as soon as they trusted me to jump on that pit, I was cooking.” Don’t be fooled by the word “pub.” This is a full service, familyoriented restaurant with two in-house chefs. Regulars can’t get enough of the ribeyes and sirloins...and the chicken fried steak is quite possibly the biggest in the county. “Our Clancy’s Sauce wings are a must try,” says Sean. “This sauce is Irish green...it’s spicy with a delicious kick. I’ve been asked more than once if I could bottle it up and let people take it home!” And the selections at the bar don’t disappoint. Clancy’s has more than 30 beers on tap. High-end liquors like Midleton Irish Whiskey and Johnny Walker Blue are always available. With three Golden Tee machines, darts and a jukebox...this pub has everything. “We really cater to our families during lunch and dinner,” says Sean. “But come 10 or 11pm on Thursday, Friday, Saturday...we’re more of a pub until 2am.” Planning a graduation party or other gathering? Clancy’s Dublin Room can accommodate up to 80 people and the Shamrock Room 25 to 30. And Clancy’s is committed to giving back. “We love fundraising nights,” says Sean. “Schools, churches, and charities...pick a night and a portion of the proceeds go back to your organization!” Drop in to Clancy’s for Irish Cinco de Mayo and enjoy Irish fajitas, Cinco de Shepherd’s Pie and an Irish margarita...or maybe a Mexican specialty beer from Silver Eagle’s one day “tap takeover.” Or just stop in for Happy Hour. With food and drink specials, it runs MondayFriday, 3-7 and all day on Saturday. Coming soon...Irish Sunday brunch. Sláinte!

Casual, Upscale Dining...

have been in the restaurant business for 23 years. “We bought a convenience store 23 years ago,” says Patty, “and after making that venture profitable, we purchased a Church’s Chicken franchise. I would work days and Mike worked nights managing the restaurant.” And all their hard work paid off. Today, 72 stores and concepts later, Mike and Patty share with our community what they love most...fabulous food! “Honestly,” says Patty, “we created Dekker’s Mesquite Grill because we wanted a nice, casual upscale place for dinner close to our home. We had no idea what it would turn into. We actually built the backroom as a personal space to get together with friends and enjoy great food and conversation. But before we got a chance to use it…we already needed that space for our customers!” And with two renowned chefs in-house, Dekker’s does delicious food right! Cooked Texas style—on a mesquite grill over an open fire—the seafood, steaks and chicken are super fresh and the portions are humongous for the price. With an ample menu there’s something for everyone, including the kids! Check out the mouth-watering hamburgers and don’t overlook a real “customer favorite”...the specials! Patty says, “We offer five or six specials daily, and we’ve been told many of our regulars have never eaten from the menu...they always get a special.” Relax with your family and enjoy live acoustic music on the deck Wednesday to Friday. “We have four musicians,” says Patty, “with a nice mix of country-western and the classics people love. There’s always people singing along.” Need a glass of wine with that?
.Right in your Backyard!
Dekker’s wine list includes both value wines and some of the best wines on the market. “Wine is one of our passions,” says Patty, “and we are very knowledgable about it.” Michael and Patty love this community and everything about it. A proud sponsor of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Dekker’s is a destination stop for the Valley Forge Texas Trail Rider’s Association. Michael and Patty’s two daughters, Torrey and Kally, attend St. John XXIII College Preparatory in Katy, where Torrey is a junior and Kally is a freshman. You can always find Patty volunteering at St. John and Dekker’s recently donated a complete kitchen to the school. “I can’t say enough about St. John,” says Patty, “We have been so happy with them and we support them in any way that we can!” “It is our hope that you will love Dekker’s as much as we do,” says Patty. “Come visit us and enjoy yourself!”

WONDERING WHAT TO GET DAD
FOR FATHER’S DAY?
I
by Amy Sharp
t’s a struggle for most of us. We think of him as the man that can do anything, and the man that has everything. But the answer is easy: Every dad loves a plate of madefrom-scratch Tex Mex finished off with an ice cold beer! Take dad to Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant for Father’s Day—where the portions are large and the food is always fresh and hot. It’s dinner fit for a king. (And dad!) Lupita’s was opened in 2003 by the Jaime and Lupe Garcia family. Bring dad in to try fellow dad Jaime’s favorite, the Chili Rellenos: a pan fried poblano pepper filled with picadillo and topped with ranchero sauce and monterey cheese. In the mood for something different? The best selling dish at Lupita’s is the Stuffed Avocado. Jaime says, “Our Stuffed Avocados are made fresh to order. Choose shrimp, chicken, beef fajita or vegetable. We make it when you order it, and we promise you’ll enjoy it!” Lupita’s is also planning a few Father’s Day specials. Check their Facebook page for details! The month of June will bring some permanent menu additions to the Lupita’s menu, including Taco de Carnitas and Enchiladas Suizas. Jaime says, “The new entrees will remain true to our promise: always fresh ingredients and made to order. It’s something new and we hope you like it!” Be sure to stop in and give these a try! No Tex Mex meal would be complete without cervezas and margaritas. That’s why Lupita’s Happy Hour runs seven days a week, including Sundays. It’s easy to celebrate dad with his favorite beer. Most domestics are available, and imports include Bohemia, Corona Lite, Corona, Carta Blanca, Tecate, Dos XX Amber, Dos XX Lager and Negra Modelo. Throwing a pool party or celebrating something special this summer? No matter the occasion, Lupita’s has the flavor your guests will love. Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant catering includes fresh, fabulous fajitas marinated with hand-ground spices delivered to your party and kept hot in chafing dishes. “Give us a call to discuss all of your catering options,” says Jaime. “We are always available to help you throw a really fun fiesta.” “Thank you to our regulars and our new customers that have dropped in and shared meals with our family,” adds Jaime. “Lupe, Rigo, Leo and I appreciate the many wonderful years of loyalty and support. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there, and we’ll see you soon!”

Taste Means Authentic & Organic

reat tasting food. It’s the universal love language. Just ask Yi Liang...it’s how he met his wife Li Luo, better known as the “Cooking Girl.” “We met in college, back home in China. Li was working with medical equipment and I was a medical student. She invited a group of us to her home for her birthday, and she cooked an oxtail soup and some fish. It was too good. That’s how this all began...with a very good dinner.” Four years ago, the couple moved to Houston so Yi could continue his studies in medical research at Texas A&M College of Medicine. “Li began bringing lunches for my colleagues and they loved it. We decided to open a restaurant.” Yi and Li opened the successful Cooking Girl

restaurant on Montrose. Now expecting their first child, they’ve sold the Montrose location, moved to Sugar Land, and opened a Cooking Girl restaurant right here on Highway 6 near Telfair! Cooking Girl specializes in authentic and organic Szechuan/Sichuan food all created by Li. “It’s healthy,” says Yi, “but taste means everything. This is different from American Chinese. It’s the flavor of Li’s home, the southwest China countryside. Li is very strict about the taste. We use fresh, organic vegetables, eggs and meat. Our beef is Angus beef and pork is Berkshire. Much of our seasoning comes straight from China, and it brings flavor you can only find in China. Our regulars that have traveled or lived in China frequently tell us how authentic our food tastes!” So what do you eat at Cooking Girl? For starters, the menu features the two dishes that stole Yi’s heart: “Gentle Touch” soup (oxtail and tomato) and “Hot Diving Fish” (flounder, cucumber, pepper and ginger). “Hot Diving Fish” happens to be the most popular item on the Cooking Girl menu. Those that love spice love the “Pepper Twins Chicken” (chicken thigh, pepper and peppercorn), and those that like the not-so-spicy enjoy “TMD Soft Bacon” (pork belly and pickle). “Eggplants Love Green Bean” tickles the taste buds of vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. And if you don’t want to venture to the world of authentic, Cooking Girl also features some of your American favorites— including “General Tso’s Chicken,” “Fried Broccoli Shrimp” and many others. “But even these may taste different and better!” warns Yi. “They’re also prepared to Li’s strict standards and all organic!” Whether you visit the quaint and elegant Cooking Girl dining room or order take out, this authentic and organic Chinese is sure to impress you. Cooking Girl can accommodate most dietary restrictions. Look for menu additions and updates monthly...Li’s always experimenting in her kitchen at home. “When I met her I was thin,” says Yi. “Not so much now. It’s not because the food’s not healthy...it’s because I can’t stop eating her cooking! It’s so good!”

Laurenzo’s El Tiempo Cantina
and its by Amy Sharp
Legendary Lineage El Tiempo’s Executive Chef Domenic Laurenzo’s family has been in food
service for more than 40 years. His grandmother is the infamous Mama Ninfa—founder and namesake of Ninfa’s. “My grandmother, Ninfa Laurenzo, grew up in Harlingen. She met my grandfather, Italianborn Domenic Thomas Laurenzo, while visiting Providence, RI. They literally flipped a coin to decide if they would live in Texas or Rhode Island.” And with luck on Mama Ninfa’s side, the Laurenzo family would begin their legendary journey. In 1959 the couple opened the Rio Grande Tortilla Factory in Houston’s Second Ward. But this love story is marred in tragedy. In 1969, Domenic’s grandfather died suddenly. “My grandmother had five children she needed to support. In 1973 she converted the tortilla factory to a five table restaurant...the place that today is known as the Original Ninfa’s on Navigation.” Just a week after opening, the restaurant caught fire...causing catastrophic damage. But the family regrouped, repaired and reopened. By their third year, sheer word of mouth made Ninfa’s a popular downtown spot. Mama Ninfa’s concept continued to grow through the eighties, the era when “Tex Mex” was born. In fact...Mama Ninfa is credited for introducing the word “fajita” into American culinary lexicon! El Tiempo found it’s way to Houston when in 1998, Mama Ninfa’s oldest grandson Domenic and her son Roland opened the original location on Richmond. (By this time the Laurenzo family was no longer involved in the Ninfa’s enterprise.) Domenic says, “We credit the name, El Tiempo, to my cousin Antonio Martinez from Monterrey. My Dad was visiting Mexico, securing items for our new restaurant’s atmosphere. In an amazing Act of God, Antonio said we should call it El Tiempo. It means ‘The Time.’ And time is of the essence... the frame of reference for every human being. At El Tiempo, my family members, including my grandmother, line the walls in a tribute to our history and culture. We invite you to our
home to truly pass the time...reminisce about the past, enjoy the present, plan your future.” El Tiempo’s eighth location just opened right here in Katy. When you walk through the doors, you’re immediately taken to a “time” of relaxation and great food—all made from scratch with the best ingredients available. “Eating is one of the joys of life,” says Domenic, “and there’s no way we would do that half-heartedly.” And from the Mixed Grill—a bit of everything cooked on a wood burning mesquite grill—to the infamous El Tiempo margarita, Domenic has created delicious combinations that area Tex Mex lovers can’t get enough of. “We’re constantly working on the food, coming up with new and innovative ideas that we know you’ll love!” Ready to pass the time with family and friends while enjoying authentic Tex Mex straight from the lineage of Mama Ninfa? veryone who’s anyone knows that the chic yet casual Pier 36 on Hwy 90A in Richmond is the place to be for fabulous seafood. Started back in 1997 by Jimmy Cantu and his parents, their family recipes quickly became Fort Bend favorites. People rush from miles around for the fresh seafood…shrimp, red snapper and flounder straight from the Gulf, and local farm raised domestic catfish and oysters from the Texas and Louisiana coast. Today that menu has grown to include new features like ceviche, grilled tuna, grilled rainbow trout, and crabmeat stuffed mushrooms. And the full service bar, Pete’s Oyster Bar, is a can’t miss. Jimmy says, “We now have our very own resident mixologist Rob. Our new holiday drinks include the ‘Life’s Peachy’—peach vodka, citrus juices and Pimm’s, and the ‘Happy Wife, Happy Life,’—a perfect blend of pineapple vodka, fresh blackberries, lime juice and Chambord (a red and black raspberry infused liqueur.)” Or maybe oysters on the half shell with a “Battle Line Brown Ale” from local Texian Brewing Company is more your style. However you like to kick back and relax, Rob and the crew at the Oyster Bar have you covered! Want to bring a little of that family recipe magic to your holiday party? Check out Pier 36 catering. Jimmy says, “When you cater with us, we work with you to create a unique menu for your special event. We can do party trays with favorites like boiled shrimp, stuffed jalapenos and chicken tenders… and we can make our gumbos and

My kids and I have been eating Dim Sum at Kim Són every Sunday for many, many years. Because I’m French, the La family call me a ‘frog.’ Because I love Vietnamese food and I’m very good with chopsticks...Tao and his brothers nicknamed me ‘slanted frog.’” Always wanting to open something together, Chef Perrier and Tao went for it when a space opened up on Plantation Drive. It’s my southern comfort food with a touch of French (think truffle mac and cheese, cornbread with queso, honey and bacon) on the menu next to Vietnamese and Asian dishes like pho and ramen with some fun tweaks too. We also offer your favorite traditional comfort foods, including chicken fried steak, buttermilk

Here everyone can order their favorites!” With a large patio, The Slanted Frog is planning live bands and even some outdoor cooking on the grill and smoker in the near future. Three reasons why Sylvia’s is the Energy Corridor’s hottest spot ylvia Casares is local culinary royalty–she’s been dubbed the “queen of Tex-Mex” and “the enchilada queen.” For 20 years, folks have packed her now-famous Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen locations (the original on Westheimer and second Woodway spot) to feast on her Texas-sized menu of TexMex favorites, south-of-the-border classics, and signature enchiladas. Now she’s unveiled her crowning achievement, Sylvia’s, her namesake shrine to all things Tex-Mex...and it’s heating up the Energy Corridor!
Home cookin’, a family gem and happy hour hotspot – all in one Here, the kitchen’s at the front door–an authentic “poblano” kitchen. “It’s my way of welcoming guests to my home,” says Casares. Hand-painted tiles create an explosion of color, the antique knick-knacks Sylvia has collected through the years, and gray-metal stove suggest that this isn’t so much a restaurant, as an extension of Sylvia’s home. On the left, family pictures adorn the walls, where local couples and families quietly enjoy the mammoth menu offerings (represented by an equally mammoth Texas map mural, which represents the various towns that inspire the menu items). A casita (little house) – which is home to Sylvia”s famous brunch and cooking classes – sits in the middle. On the other side sits a bar that looks straight out of a Mexican cowboy cantina. It’s a hoppin’ happy hour scene, as young Energy Corridor singles and groups nurse signature margaritas and cocktails, or flow outside to the wraparound patio. In all, it’s a perfect harmony of dining crowds – thanks to a warm, inviting, familiar atmosphere, flawlessly curated by Casares herself. A Tex-Mex feast, featuring the city’s most addictive enchilada Few in Texas know Tex-Mex like Casares: “You could say it’s America’s original fusion food,” she says. “And it might be America’s oldest regional cuisine.” And just as her restaurant boasts the best of all dining experiences, her menu is a perfect marriage of the Lone Star State and bordertown Mexico. The mesquite fire grill churns out succulent beef, chicken, shrimp and quail – and giant ribeyes and pork chops and steaks – for Tex-Mex diehards. There’s a culinary tour via the legendary enchiladas – and 14 unique sauces. And there’s South Texas comfort food, like carne guisada, the Mexican beef stew and velvety smooth tamales.
But there may be nothing more comforting than the “Seguin” enchiladas...a blissful perfect combination of slow-cooked carnitas (the Mexican equivalent of pulled pork), matched with white cheese, and smothered with a deep, chocolatey, warmly spicy poblano mole sauce. The fork-tender pork crumbles with each bite, and the sauce makes you wonder, “Is this dinner, dessert, or both?” Get on the bandwagon: Sylvia Casares is the next national food star Casares has been in the “best of “ lists statewide in Texas Monthly and nationally in USA Today. Even the always-bubbly food TV star Rachel Ray has stopped by to sample Sylvia’s famous enchiladas. She recently concocted a dish for Spike TV’s Frankenfood, and she’s tight-lipped about her upcoming appearance on a Food Network cooking competition, she promises “some serious TV drama.” And with a nationally distributed cookbook and tour on the way, it’s just a matter of time before the country sees what you can find for yourself at Sylvia’s every day: Our queen is ruling Tex-Mex. He says, “As a parent who has raised three pizzaloving boys, I was concerned about the ingredients in the food my kids ate...that’s why I made the decision to go all-natural and to use only 100% unbleached, untreated wheat flour. Food should taste good...and be good for you, too!” Take pizza night to the next level with Pepperoni’s natural mozzarella cheese, highquality wheat flour, premium tomatoes, and toppings from everyday pepperoni and mushrooms to exciting eggplant and ricotta. Have any diet restrictions? Pepperoni’s accommodates gluten intolerant patrons by offering a gluten-free crust, as well as low-fat cheese and vegan cheese upon request. A Family Passion for Fine Food

ne local family has handed it down through the generations...and now you can reap the delicious benefits. Kevin Rios says, “My father Mario and my mother Maggie were both immigrants and entrepreneurs. I grew up around the restaurant business, working in several Houston restaurants. In 2005, I, together with my parents and sister Karen, opened Mojitos Cuban Bistro. While Mojitos was very successful, we wanted to venture more into fine dining. That’s how Veritas was born. When we opened eight years ago, we wanted to combine fine dining, a superb wine experience, and superior service. And today nothing’s changed. We continue to offer an upscale experience and exquisite food at reasonable prices.” As a guest, you will enjoy this culinary adventure on the veranda overlooking Brooks Lake, in the private wine cellar or in the elegant dining room. But wherever you dine, expect to be fed like royalty and treated like family, by family. Kevin and his family can always be seen at Veritas, working with their team to ensure the perfect dining experience...a team that is 90% employees hired on day one. Managing partner and executive chef Taylor Salazar is Karen’s husband. Taylor graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelors of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management and later earned a second degree in Culinary Arts from The Art Institute of Houston. Kevin’s mom Maggie holds down the business and accounting, and honorary family member Alex Mendoza is the kitchen manager. With happy hour M-F 3-7 and on Saturday 4-7, Veritas is the place to enjoy a phenomenal date on the veranda, impress your colleagues with a special event, or celebrate an evening out. At the striking stone
bar in the front of the restaurant, you can have an aperitif before dinner or an after dinner drink before leaving. Karen, who managed restaurants for many years, today is a Registered Nurse who works at Texas Children’s Hospital. She recently graduated with her Masters of Science in Nursing as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. Kevin’s wife Melissa has a full-time job taking care of their kids and holds a Masters of Science from the University of Houston in Educational Leadership. And this family of great taste continues to grow. On May 4th, Karen and Taylor welcomed the newest member of the Rios clan, baby girl Channing. Kevin says, “I love that my kids and Karen’s kids get to grow up together in the family business. We invite you to join our family for lunch, dinner, or happy hour. With our seasonal menu featuring the finest and freshest ingredients possible and our world class wine list, we’re sure you’ll be impressed!” Steak and Lobster Night every Saturday $29.95 (includes House Salad and Roasted Potatoes) Steak Night every Monday Choose a Filet, Prime New York Strip or Ribeye $39.95 (includes House Salad, Mashed Potatoes and Asparagus) Veritas Steak and Seafood ~ 281-491-2901 550 Lake Pointe Parkway, Suite 500, Sugar Land, TX 77478 www.veritassteakandseafood.com

elebrating its one year anniversary in September, Off the Vine Bistro is known for feeding the hearts and souls of Fort Bend County. Owners, Namita and Manish Asthana, offer their restaurant to help local nonprofits and area schools raise money. Namita says, “We are built by the community, so we like to give back to the community.” They have offered their support to Texana, Fort Bend Literacy Council, Meals on Wheels, Sugar Land Heritage Society and many others. Before she opened the restaurant, Namita created a line of gluten free simmer sauces after suffering from undiagnosed food allergies for years. Her simmer sauces were selling well in
Farmer’s Markets and to local chefs. Off the Vine Bistro uses her sauces by serving food cooked from scratch using locally sourced foods from respected providers. Because everything is cooked fresh in their kitchen, special dietary issues are easily accommodated. Everything at Off the Vine Bistro has been carefully selected to offer the best in flavor and experience. Each family member contributed their own area of expertise: the world class wine list was carefully selected by Manish, the wide array of craft beer was chosen by their son Sam, and their daughter Sasha put her own personal twist on the espresso and coffee offerings. Off the Vine Bistro is a place
to gather with your favorite people and enjoy a quiet meal in an intimate setting, or music on the patio every Saturday night. Once a month they have wine tastings and a 5 Course Wine Paired Dinner. Visit their website and checkout the calendar. You can even reserve the entire restaurant for private parties. In November, they had back-to-back private Thanksgiving dinners. Both groups were so happy with their parties... they decided to call it a “Friendsgiving.” You can experience Off the Vine Bistro six days a week, or book your own “Friendsgiving.” Just be prepared to enjoy pure, fresh, local food that will nourish your heart and soul. The Spirit of
Old...with Mexico a Twist!
W
hen the Soto Brothers opened the first Soto’s Kitchen in Sienna Plantation, folks loved the amazing flavors and warm, personal atmosphere so much, it became clear they’d need a second location. Amador Soto says, “As we gathered our team of talented, creative people, we needed a bigger stage to express our vision...and we found it in Missouri City, home of our second location. Everyone at Soto’s Kitchen pays attention to the details, building the layers of flavor, spending time on every component, and adding the finishing garnishes.” With an artist’s palette of vivid purples, greens, fuschia and black, Soto’s Kitchen draws on the heritage and flavors of Old Mexico with a personal twist. Amador says, “Our family comes from Central Mexico, a region that lies between the lush rainforests and the arid deserts. My brothers and I grew up in the kitchen, learning the food my mother and my mother’s mother cooked. At Soto’s Kitchen, we share a cuisine you could call ‘Mexican Fusion,’ drawing from ancient culinary traditions from different regions in Mexico and adding our own modern flair!”
LUNCH SPECIAL available from Monday through Friday from 11:30-3:30
Soto’s Kitchen 2899 Dulles Avenue, Missouri City, TX 77459
Your eyes will be delighted and your tastebuds will be dazzled by Soto’s special Chicken Cubano...chicken served over seared sweet plantains and drizzled with their own bright chimichurri sauce and topped with beautifully tangy house-made pickled red wine onions. A “fan favorite” is the Mole Steak...a tender 10 oz marinated steak over a poblano mole sauce topped with grilled onions and cotija cheese and served on a broken piece of marble to represent the ancient origins of this dish. Amador says, “We make our mole with techniques and flavors passed down from my mother and grandmother. Our guests love the rich, smoky depth it brings to the steak and the way the onions and cheese add notes of light.” Enjoy a glass of house-made sangria or a margarita with the welcoming atmosphere and tasty treats at Soto’s Kitchen. You won’t be surprised by two secret ingredients shared by every tempting menu dish from the refreshing Grapefruit Salad to the family-friendly Kids’ Menu to the ample catering menu…“At Soto’s Kitchen, quality and freshness are our secret ingredients!”
