WELCOME EDITORS NOTE

As I sit in front my unbalanced PC desk, humbled to be an editor of a magazine, regardless of whether it’s for upcoming personalities that very few people know of and the fact that some are not even recognized at allI feel a rush of victory and some excitement through my veins with a reminder that this is some kind of an achievement as I have grown up dreaming of being recognized as a writer, though in my anticipation I was to be a fiction writer instead… I meet with a realization that the future is truly unpredictable and it’s on a day like this that I really understand the true meaning of the song by Tracy Chapman which says, “The picture makes a promise but the flesh lets it be broken.” However, in my case the picture made a promise but the flesh let it be twisted rather than broken, because even though I dreamt of being a fiction writer, I am here writing for a mag so I’m actually living my dream though it’s not precisely what I had hoped I would achieve, the excitement is equal to that which I would feel had I been writing my fiction for professional publication such as this one. And this tells me one thing… I could be a few steps from achieving that dream. I always knew that empowering others and promoting them comes with a beautiful feeling, little did I know that it also brings such an excitement and inspiration. The time I spent writing these upcoming stars’ profiles had been of immense joy. An opportunity to write about ambitious personalities who share one goal, to live a dream- is a greatest blessing as it not only inspires but motivates me to realize that no matter how long life could have sent us from pillar to coast, serving us adversities instead of success while we try everything and even risk our lives and give up some of the most important aspects of our lives to pursue our dreams- we should never give up but rather let the universal creator to do as should be done. As it’s also been said many times that patience is virtue and good things come to those who wait. UPCOMING MAG | 3

EDITORS NOTE Looking ahead I see myself priding in Upcoming Mag for many things from giving me an opportunity to edit their content and also going out of their way to promote these talented stars that are full of dreams and hopes, burning with ambition and passion for their different crafts, eager to shine and bring about brighter light into the entertainment industry. Otherwise as you, the readers have raised a concern in how interviews have been conducted, I hope that we have met your expectations or are a little close to it and in that case I urge that you give some feedback on the interviews and anything else you might not be happy with as this mag is not only for us and the variety of featured personalities, but you too and it is definitely through you that we can wake to see this digital publication prosper even into the global space even expand into a televised medium. With lots of appreciation and love to you all, I look forward to the development of Upcoming Mag and featured personalities, as well as your engagement in order for Upcoming Mag and to reach its maximum growth and prosperity. Yours with love, Lieketseng Lecheko

INTERVIEW https://upcomingmag2019.files.wordpress.com

Q

11:00a m A

What inspired your name?

11:03a m

Nothing specific really, I knew I wanted something different and I know I wanted to make people happy with my music so I called myself Xtatiqbeatz which means happy beats/music.

Q

11:05a m A

In your career as an artist, what challenges have you encountered and what have you learned from those challenges?

Q

I've encountered quite a lot of challenges actually… From cancellation of shows to performing for two people. Struggling with recording equipment just to name a few… What I've learned from it all is to trust the process, allow God to take control- do his will and at the end it'll all work out.

11:09a m

Who do you look up to as an inspiration and why?

Q

11:12 am

Big Sean, because he too had to fight obstacles to get to where he is today and he didn't have to change who he is or what he stands for.

A

11:15 am

I've been in the game since 2009 in high school and my biggest goal or dream is to be in a song with Big Sean

11:20 am

Q

What has been your greatest achievement?

A

11:23 am

Being able to remain true to myself and believing that I am in my lane therefore enabling me to deliver exactly what my fans want, that freedom alone is an achievement on its own.

INTERVIEW

UPCOMING MAG | 18 https://upcomingmag2019.files.wordpress.com

Q

11:00a m

What inspired your name?

A

11:03a m

There isn't really any solid reason behind my name. I actually used to go by a different one when I started rapping, but then it was way too common so I had to find a way to be different. I was in a rap group of about 11 members, if I remember correctly and I was the smallest one in terms of appearance- so I had to come up with something that best fit my situation, which was "EyeLukeYung" standing for “I look young”. I've been stuck with it ever since.

Q

11:05a m A

In your career as an artist, what challenges have you encountered and what have you learned from those challenges?

Q

Who do you look up to for inspiration?

UPCOMING MAG | 19

11:12 am

You know as you are coming up, you are inspired by a lot of people and a whole bunch of other things happening in the hip-hop culture right? It all started with me wanting to be part of it all. In my early recording stages, I used to think that I would be able to work with just anyone I wanted to work with, only to find out that it wasn't that easy. So basically the challenge has always been me getting myself on a high level of recognition. And through that the most important thing I've learnt was to just always remain patient and never rush what God is preparing for me. After all, good things come to those who wait. .

11:17 am A

11:18 am

My inspiration evolves with time .Back when I started rapping it was through my sister and her Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, Ludacris and some D12 records that she used to play for me. We would rap along to most of the songs until I realized that it was actually something fun to do, and that's how I started. As time went I got introduced to a whole lot of other rappers, some of who were SA locals; Golden Shovel, Mothipa, Proverb and Pro Kid just to name a few. And much later I started being versatile. I drew my inspiration from AKA and J. Cole, until this day, these are two of my most favorite artists to listen to for inspiration.

Q

11:00a m

What's your biggest goal?

A

11:03a m

Okay firstly I'm not just an artist, but the other aspects of my life I would like to keep private for obvious reasons. But then speaking about music, I just want to get my voice heard to an extent that I do not have to explain who I am in order to be able to work with anybody. If it can all start with me being one of the biggest artists in SA that would automatically pave way for me to branch out and collaborate with other talented musicians until I reach that goal.

Q

11:05a m

Who has made a huge impact in your life and how have they done so?

A

11:12 am

Life in general it would have to be my eldest sister, Maki Mokoena for always breaking boundaries and exceeding limits. She has always been the person to create possibilities out of impossibilities, and for that I've always looked up to her. I am where I am because I've always tried to replicate everything that she did. Musically for now it has to be AKA. I used to be a hardcore lyricist just focused on raps until I started to listen to him, then I transcended from being that kind of artist to being a musician. Because of him, now it's easy for me to play my music to just anybody and they would vibe to it, which is a really good thing because we need our music to be able to touch each and every soul no matter how old or young you are, or no matter how deep or moderate you are. .

Q

What is your greatest achievement so far?

UPCOMING MAG | 20

11:17 am

A

11:18 am

A: Man, you know I even have a description on my Instagram profile that goes like, "I'm not yet who I'm meant to become." Until I feel like I've reached that point in life, I will always leave room for that greatest thing that I want to achieve. Right now for me, every day is an achievement as I am working on becoming the best version of myself on a daily basis until I get where I'm actually meant to be.

I am Thobeka Zondi, a 20 year old young woman from a small area of eMbulwane from Greytown in Kwa-Zulu Natal Province. I am currently residing in Durban, studying at Durban University of Technology doing my 3rd year in Financial Accounting field. I am a young talented writer, make-up artist who is also interested in photography and fashion designing. I believe in the spirit of art and that it could change the mindset of our community as it goes beyond what is seen with a naked eye yet it explores the desires of a human being, their thoughts and their emotions in different aspects of life. Art helps us bring our imaginations into life and help us live by them. Therefore, with the modelling platform I want to promote and uplift the young children in our society through developing them into creative beings by letting them believe they can be everything that they want to be and let art be a norm in our society and not something to be ashamed of.

KHAHLISO SETLOGELO

My name is Khahliso Setlogelo and I’m 16 years old. I grew up with a burning passion to be a model but no one including myself took that seriously until I was 15 years old. Almost everything I did was an indication that modelling is what I’m meant for and it’s what I needed to do. When most people started encouraging me to be a model, that's when I started taking my talent serious and I began searching for modelling groups in Facebook but I didn't get any help, until I gave up. One day I met this models in town, I wanted to ask them more information but I was scared to ask them so I told myself that this is my talent and this is where my life belong so I had to put pride aside. I asked those models but they sent me to Miss Mangaung Metro known as Mathabo and she gave me her number. After a few days we had some chat, but I saw developments.

UPCOMING MAG | 59

I wanted to give up I kept on telling myself that giving up won't give me anything. I started joining this Bloemfontein models and that’s where my journey started. I used to post on that group and there was this gentleman called Mr Qopane who used to view my posts. One day he commented on my post telling me to inbox him. I was so happy. UPCOMING MAG | 60 https://upcomingmag2019.files.wordpress.com

He gave me his numbers so that he can keep me in touch- his support gave me power and confidence that I can do this. He saw something that I could not see then I started working with photographers. I still remember the first photographer I worked with was Mr Kgosiemang. Now I’m working with a fashion designer and am advertising people's designs. MODELLING MADE ME! The reason I say this is because it transformed me into someone I never thought I could possibly become.

I look up to Refilwe Modiselle because looking back at her modelling journey, one cannot help but to be inspired and I can say that her confidence has also pushed me to the limit. Modelling is important to me because it's built my self-confidence and I gained high self-esteem. To me Modelling is not about winning sashes and crowns, but it teaches me to respect myself and my society. it's also about being able to be a great leader and it helped me to face my fears. I started modelling when I was 16 years old and I entered Miss Allanridge Secondary School and made it to Top 10.

UPCOMING MAG | 65

2017 I won Allanridge

Miss

Confidence

2018, I was crowned Second Princess for Miss Royalty 2020, I got Miss Bircheliegh Popularity sash. What I have learnt in my modelling journey is that beauty is not about the physical appearance only, but being able to be a good ambassador and a good leader to your society and giving back to the community. What I enjoy about being a model is that it boosts my confidence and helps me to be able to stand up for myself and maintain the confidence to talk to people without fearing what the other person might think about me.

In life you should never ever give up in your dreams, and remember we’re not the same and we can never achieve one thing at the same time. Some people can achieve success earlier and some people’s success can take time, but it is important to never give up. With the knowledge that I have right now and that which I am still yet to learn, I believe that in the next five coming years- the future generations will be reading about me on magazines, newspaper and in all mass media as I’m driven and optimistic about being a famous model not only in my community but my country as well and very likely globally.

Modelling has its own challenges- firstly it's not that much easier to get supporters and having to get people who will purchase tickets and getting people to vote for you is one of the difficult challenges that most of the models face. Preparing for an event is never easy but I already have a routine for preparing a pageant, I practice in front of the mirror and my family before the actual event takes place.

Q

11:09 pm

What is your biggest dream in your life and career?

Q

A

11:15 pm

My biggest dream is to have my own modelling agency where I can teach and encourage girls or women to express themselves without having to worry about making sure they appear normal within a society, set moral standards and learn to be comfortable in one’s own skin as well as the beauty within.

UPCOMING MAG | 86 https://upcomingmag2019.files.wordpress.com

INTERVIEW Q: Can you please describe yourself in details as briefly as u can? A: I am a simple person who loves to motivate our youngsters and always love to be there for people if I can, I also loved to uplift our boy's as we often forget about them. As a mom and as someone looking at how our boys have to prove themselves to the world and in today's world that revolves around girls and women, though I do work on uplifting girls too. I always believed that what you do and give must come from the heart Q: So as a pageant coach, you focus more on boys than girls or do you run projects that support boys and some that support girls? And as a pageant coach, what do you do most of your time to fulfill a role of a pageant coach? A: I focus on girls and boys as I believe that it's not about the person is, but what you see…I have boys and girls some of who are lesbian and gay and they inspire me to love what I am doing. Q: I do understand what pageant coach is but in your own words can you please describe in specific details what you do to develop these boys and girls?

A: I groom them to be themselves and never think that they’re not good enough as in today's world, some people can really break you. And I always remind them that no one is perfect hence they should love their imperfections. Q: So in other words you're a life coach for young kids not specifically pageant models? A: You can say that… I am trying to motivate and coach at the same time as for me it's not about what's outside but what's inside a person. You see, I had my personal challenges that affected my selfesteem, from being married and getting divorced and losing the new love of my love when I was sure I had a new opportunity to get married again and determined to make it the best, our sudden separation made me feel unworthy and unattractive too. I had a bit of challenges admiring myself and my friend advised me to enter Miss Africa and I was like, “no ways, did you see those women’s bodies?” Then his level of concern indicated to me that there’s really some damage in how I thought about myself. And I felt the pressure to try to love myself again and appreciate myself regardless of my personal experiences.

INTERVIEW

Q: Wow!!! So much to have been through but I'm glad it has brought you to a life changing position where you have a power to build others- And? A: I learned a lot from my models as well, I don't pretend about who I say I am and what you see is what you get. Q: I see and I'm proud of you. Is that all? A: Indeed, sometimes as youngsters can't talk to their parents about their social challenges and it's concerning. I always say if you walk on that stage, own it. Q: So in just a few words, what inspired you to be a pageant coach? A: I just love how it brings out the smile on my face when I see that I made a difference in these kids’ lives. Q: I believe it started as an idea, but you could've not implemented that idea... What drove you to make it happen?

Q: I see... And you decided you'll learn to love yourself while you are teaching others the importance of self-love and confidence? A: As I used to have keep my smile on and at times I felt that the pressure's getting too much I’d go to my room and let it all out and when I go out I had to put my smile back on- I felt we need to know that we’re not perfect and whatever one goes through is not their responsibility, it shouldn’t restrict us from being happy. God knew how he made you, it's beautiful and we need to love it. Q: So my next question is... What challenges have you encountered in your career as a pageant coach and what have you learnt from them? A: I learned that it's not about winning, but about just being with different girls from all cultures. We learn a lot and I took away so much from that, it’s been an amazing journey. And as a pageant coach, I learned that I can tell my models to just love who they are and never let anyone tell them differently. Q: What is your biggest vision?

A: For me I wasn't good enough ,I had to look at my kids and ask myself if I don't love myself, how will my kids look at me?

A: To host my own pageant and fashion show.

INTERVIEW Aey: Hi this is Aey Ibhubezi lika Zontonga lase-Thembisa, and I am a lyricist, composer and performing artist. Shout out to Upcoming Mag for having me. Monate: Are you under any recording label? If ‘yes’, why? if ‘no' why are you not under a recording label? Aey: No. I am currently not under any recording label. I was previously under a recording label but I just feel like we did not share the same Vision. So this is why I am not currently under any recording label, because the previous ones did not serve me well and understand what I was trying to achieve. That is why I prefer to work alone for now. Monate: what is your vision? Aey: my vision is to use my voice to speak for the voiceless, use my music as a tool to empower women, and also take my music to Africa. So I am not trying to fit in anywhere, or try to sound like anyone, I just want to be me and do what is real and true to me. That is my vision. Monate: being a vocalist is broad, is there any particular genre that you would like as a vocalist?

UPCOMING MAG | 92

Aey: there is no one genre that I would say I like, I am versatile and I also listen to a lot different genres, so depending on the mood and what I am feeling at that time, but I would say that maskandi is the one that made me, but there is also a lot of Kwaito that I grew up listening to and hip hop as well. So there is no one specific genre that I would say is my favourite, I just go with the flow wherever the flow takes me. Monate: currently the leading genre in music in South Africa is Amapiano, so as a versatile vocalist do you have an Amapiano song? If you do not when can we expect to hear an Amapiano song from you? Monate: with this whole Coronavirus (COVID19) pandemic happening, how are you making money as an artist? Aey: besides having a day job, I am one of the fortunate people to have a day job; I also have other side hustles which are hobbies turned into income, so it turned some of us into hustlers. Monate: What are your other side hustles? Aey: I am a hairdresser, though I do not like it but I am really good at it, so I just thought let me just tap into that.

Monate: when and how did you start your music career? Aey: I started recording when I was in grade 11 but I would say my music career started when I auditioned for Ziveze Music Knockout in Soweto, where they were looking for original artists to perform in a musical. I auditioned for that and I made the cut, so that is when my music career began, because I was myself but in a theatre play so that is why I also discovered that I also have the love for Theatre. That is when I started to take music seriously. Monate: you have your music on music app stores, what advice would you give to someone who would like to have their music on the music app stores? Aey: first of all I would say make quality music because at the end of the day you will have to invest in yourself and your music... so you would not like to invest in music that has quality that is not up to standard. It is unfortunate that you have to have at least some money to have your music on the app stores, so be prepared for that.

Monate: where can people follow you? Aey: people can follow me on Facebook at Ayanda Oyibhubesykazi, and Twitter, Instagram and tik-tok it is @bhesykazi and my Facebook page is Aey Thee Bubhesikazi. That is where you can follow me. Also I am in a competition called sing your heart, which airs on DSTV channel 260, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so you can go to the Sing Your Heart Facebook page and see when it airs, and I am a finalist on that show so you can check me out on TV.

UPCOMING MAG | 93

Aey: I would like to send a shout out to sing your heart, because there are a lot music competitions that expect you to sound in a certain way, and me being myself and considering the music that I am doing, I have always felt out of place, whether it is an a rap or singing show, because I fuse singing and rap. So every time it is either I am not a good enough singer a good enough rapper, but has been that one show that has allowed me to be myself and has celebrated me for being myself and not make me feel weird like I have felt all my life. Go out and audition for the show, auditions are opened for season 2, like the Facebook page. Try your luck there if you are a singer or a rapper. I would just like to say to all upcoming artists, Qina idolo! Is rough out there, the support is almost non-existent especially when you are starting out. You need to be your own supporter, because if you are going to depend on people or need them to validate you, you are not going to get anywhere. So you just need to push push push, and and eventually they will catch up with you. Most of all believe in yourself, believe in your craft, believe in what you do. Do not settle for less and do not try to fit in, be yourself that is the most important thing.

I just want to say thank you to Upcoming Mag, we know that there are lot of upcoming artists who want to be in this platform, so shout out to you. Shout out to my fans, my world has been a roller coaster but thank you for sticking with me and Mfanomsuthu 2.0 is out, go check it out on YouTube on the A Thee Bubhesikazi channel. Tonight I am play-listed on Metro FM on Oskido's show.. so thank you and I hope I will get more fans here. This video was turned into text for our magazine By: Dumisani Teddy Makgotho
