As the temperature drops, the change in season brings hot meals and wooly jumpers.

With Easter just around the corner it’s not only time to enjoy the finer things in life like our Chocolate Eggs on Easter Sunday and our new found desire for good wholesome food. With it brings our new wholesome waistline; inside this issue Clare Hozack gives you tips on how to shed those unwanted kilos.

Family feasts and fracas, makes this season one of the most enjoyable.

I have listed 2 of my favorite recipes that are sure to warm you up and are not only easy to make but are also a healthy option.

Potato Bacon Soup

Baked Peaches

Serves: 4 Cooking time: 25min Ingredients: 5 strips bacon 28 oz. chicken stock 1 ¾ lbs. potatoes (peeled and cut into ½ in. cubes) 1 medium onion (chopped) 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves Sea salt Pepper (freshly ground) ½ cup shredded Cheddar cheese Directions: Cook the bacon in the microwave or in a skillet. Crumble.

In a Dutch oven, pour the stock, potatoes, onion, and thyme. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium high and boil for 10 minutes.

Add the bacon; simmer for about 5 minutes.

Season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with cheese.

Serves: 6 Cooking Time: 20mins Ingredients: 3 Peaches Brown Sugar Icecream/cream Directions: Cut your peaches in half, taking out the stones.

Place the peaches on to a baking tray and cover liberally in brown sugar.

Then pop them in a 220 C (428 F) oven for about 20 mins or until the sugar is melted and the peaches have softened.

Spoon in Cream or Icecream and serve.

IZZY GOING TO BE A SUCCESS?

When Autumn rolls around,

the zinc cream can go away

and sporting fan’s attention

shifts from cricket to one of

the footy codes. The northern states have a strong following for either of the rugby codes, however in Victoria, AFL is more than a sport, it is a religion.

AFL is a game unique to Australia and it is a truly national game. With teams ranging from Melbourne to Brisbane to Perth. This season sees an addition to league with Greater Western Sydney, this area has always been a Rugby League stronghold. The AFL is attempting to break into this market before they perceive it will be too late. But the question remains, has the horse already bolted?

The acquisition of Isreal Folau will undoubtedly bring an interest from the average league fan, but is it the right type of interest? Most ‘leaguies’, will tune in to his games in the hope that he fails, so that they can then turn to their mate at the pub and say, ‘They paid a million dollars a season for that! What a joke!’ and then switch the channel back to the league.

However, the gauge of whether Israel is a success or otherwise needs to be

realistic. He needs to be judged not on the significant salary he will be receiving but on the same standards as any other first year footballer.

His salary is not what it is to place him in the top echelon of stars based on playing ability, it is about drawing people through the gates. The likelihood of him winning the Brownlow is about as realistic as Lleyton Hewitt winning another major…. on the golf course.

In my eyes if Folaus plays more than half of the games over the season and does not get embarrassed in many games, he has done what is expected of him in his first season. He also needs to maintain a profile and attract interest from parties who may not necessarily follow the code.

This brings us back to the original question, has the horse already bolted?

The AFL tried the Sydney market with the Swans a number of years ago, and despite continual success on the footy field they have averaged one of the lower crowd attendance figures since their inception.

The test will be whether Izzy alone can draw people through the gates, especially with the team expected to

struggle this season (GWS are $1.15 to win the Wooden Spoon). Time will tell whether the expansion works, however maybe an alternative would have been to get the Swans functioning at the peak of their powers first, where maybe Izzy in a Red and White jersey may not have been the worst option going around.
