UP INSTITUTE FOR SMALL-SCALE INDUSTRIES ISSUE NO. 19
Former Metro Manila Development (MMDA) chair and former Markina City mayor Bayani Fernando, who was also a graduate of Batch 1 of UP ISSI’s Managers Course (MC) in 1970 to 71, led the distinguished guest speakers at the Competitive Entrepreneurial Leadership Conference held last Saturday, August 25, at the Institute.

F
ernando, who is also a construction magnate, spoke about leadership execution and governance, mainly sharing his experiences in running a small business and in administering the city of Marikina as three-term mayor. Peripherally, he referred to his stint as MMDA chair. In 1970, Fernando attended the first run of the MC. According to him, he never took a formal management degree nor a postgraduate program after finishing Bachelor of Science in Engineering at the Mapua Institute of Technology.
Thus, he said, “If I turned out to be a good manager, it is because of ISSI.” Now out of public service and back to business management, Fernando says he is happy as a practicing industrial designer, having designed what he calls a revolutionary schoolhouse. The design is modular, made mostly of stainless steel, and could be installed in three days. He is about to begin to construct more than 2,000 school buildings using this design, having won a bid as a private construction company.
15 more guest speakers
T
he conference, organized to mark the anniversary of the founding of UP ISSI 43 years ago, featured 15 other speakers from the private business and industry sector, government, and academe who talked on various aspects of entrepreneurial leadership as well as entrepreneurship methods and tools. stressing that an innovation or an invention must be commercialized and bring financial returns in order to be considered successful. Myrna Bituin, owner and founder of Pampanga-based furniture manufacturing firm Betis Crafts, Inc., talked about entrepreneurial values and work ethics. This was not the first time she was invited to speak at ISSI. A few months ago, she spoke at the First Distinguished Entrepreneurship Leadership Forum together with former Las Piñas City congresswoman Cynthia Villar. Another MC alum, Tita Datu Puangco (6th MC, 1973), president and chief executive officer of Arcilla Enterprise Development Consulting Company, spoke about leadership communications.
Page 4 UP Diliman vice-chancellor for administration Prof. Virginia Yap (42nd MC, 1993), talked about customer social responsibility, which according to her is putting customer satisfaction and value maximization at the center of corporate social responsibility (CSR). She also emphasized that CSR covers three fronts: (1) the viewpoint of engaging people; (2) the vantage of organizational processes; and (3) the perspective of technology. engaging talk on marketing leadership. While in ISSI, he envisioned that if the Institute was to sell its products and its advocacies, the culture of entrepreneurship had to be planted and nurtured. “It was [indeed] UP ISSI that led, exercising its marketing leadership”, he enthused, and ended his talk with the message: “All you need is to lead the way”. Meanwhile, Ignacito Alvizo, chair of the Enterprise Bank, himself a former ISSI staff, talked about visionary leadership. He said that it was visionary leadership that turned low-income entrepreneurs in Mindanao to become development “triggers” for rural communities. It was the same kind of leadership that grew his bank to 22 branches and 24 micro banking offices after 36 years of enterprise development and of being a “vessel for poverty alleviation”.
Afternoon sessions
A
nother former ISSI staff, Engr. Gamaliel “Jimmy” Itao, president of Mechatronics Technologies Corporation and Industrial Controls Corporation, opened the afternoon sessions. Speaking about quality and agility leadership, he
said that it was the former that helped him expand his business. Agility leadership, meanwhile, is always “being on the lookout for opportunities—to be able to seek, see and seize opportunities quickly, to proact mostly, rather than react—being true to the axiom that opportunity knocks only once,” he said. “Information and networking aid me a lot in my application of agility leadership,” he added. “The secret for entrepreneurial success are visualize, actualize and prayerize”.

Outstanding alumni were also recognized during the event with Tony Tan Caktiong, founder and current chair and CEO of fast-food giant Jollibee Foods Corporation, copping the highest outstanding achievement award. The Entrepreneurial Leadership Awards were given to MC alumni who are considered leaders in their respective industries and developed innovative products and services with proven business success. They were awarded to families or institutions that sent the highest number of participants to the course “with continuing concern and unswerving support to UP ISSI over the years”.

Entrep wannabes get the lowdown on technopreneurship
A
spiring entrepreneurs gathered for this year’s edition of the Tara Na, Negosyo Na! seminar, which kicked off the month-long celebration of UP ISSI’s anniversary. This year’s edition had a slant on technopreneurship and was aptly titled “Kapihan on Technopreneurship”. Despite the unfavourable weather, more than 40 aspiring entrepreneurs attended the kapihan or an informal gathering over coffee. Some UP ISSI staff led by Inday Almonte facilitated the workshop that drew the participants’ common conceptions about entrepreneurship in general as well as their simple ideas about technopreneurship. Questionnaires that aimed to measure the personal entrepreneurial competencies of the participants were also distributed.
