Cooper Landing Gem Newsletter- November 2024

Page 1

Dear Members,

It has been a very different fall for the board of directors. Losing Shirley was a shock, and surgeries for other board members has put us a bit behind getting out the membership bills. Please be patient with us.

The new website is in process. Please send in updated information that you wish as that request will be forthcoming. We hope this new website will help all of us to increase our exposure to our clients.

Have you a vision of Cooper Landing in 10 years? The bypass will hopefully be finished, Three Bears a member of the community and the look of Cooper Landing will be changing. Do you want to explore a winter economy? Extend the shoulder seasons? If you have ideas, bring them to the Chamber. We would love to help the community grow into a beautiful year round destination if that is the community desires.

Have glorious Thanksgiving with friends and family.

Thank you,

Cooper Landing, Alaska 99572

Cooper Landing Trails

• The new Cooper Landing Trails website design is getting closer to launch. We hope to have it up and running in time for snow trail grooming reports.

• We held a CLT work-day at the Devil’s Creek snow trails and have the trails prepped for winter grooming. We’d like to thank Martha Story, Theo Lexmond, Lou Prill, Monika Adam, Ian Hlavin, Neil Pedersen, and of course our officers, David Story and Janette Cadieux for their efforts.

• Recall that CLT won’t be allowed to groom the Russian River Campground again this winter due to construction scheduling for the improvements there. You may still snowshoe or ski in on your own.

• The new snow trails equipment has been ordered and the new snowmobile is here! These items were made possible by a grant from the Recreational Trails Program. If you are curious you may read more about RTP at the following website: https://dnr.alaska.gov/ parks/grants/trails.htm

• The Cooper Landing Town Road Pathway Planning Project was select as the #1 priority at the community meeting with the Borough so it will go into the list of capital improvement projects that the Borough will submit to the State. From there the State will select items from Boroughs across the state to apply funding. Keep your fingers crossed that we get funded. It would be a big step forward to get the planning phase of the project accomplished.

• CLT officers, David and Janette, continue to meet with Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) to work on how to advance our CLTRPPP.

• For other details please see the notes of meetings posted on our website “News” page. https://www.walkcooperlanding.org/news.

Cooper Landing Library News

Stay Visible When You Bike and Walk

Did you know? In Alaska’s dark winters, your choice of clothing can be a lifesaver. Here’s a startling fact:

Drivers can only see someone walking in dark clothing from 55 feet away. But with reflective materials? That distance jumps to 500 feet!

That’s why we’ve teamed up with the Center for Safe Alaskans to provide you with free reflective tape, available at the library.

Tips for using the reflective tape:

1. Cut reflective tape into smaller pieces to maximize use.

2. Stick it on clean, dry surfaces.

3. Add it to winter gear, backpacks, bikes, helmets, wheelchairs and even dog leashes.

4. Place tape to outline your shape and highlight moving parts like sleeves and pant legs.

Need more? Order additional tape directly from the Center for Safe Alaskans: https://safealaskans.org/reflectivetape/ Let’s shine bright and stay safe this winter, Alaska!

How you can help our library:

Our library provides invaluable services to the community. In addition to book and movie checkouts, we provide an online catalog, access to the Alaska Digital Library, internet, and up-to-date computers, printers, and fax for public use.

•Volunteer! Email Virginia at cooperlandinglibrary@gmail.com if you would like to contribute time. We are always looking for volunteers to work a regular shift, substitute, and/or provide expertise and service in specialized areas, such as accounting or information technology.

•Donate! Checks can be mailed to Cooper Landing Community Library, PO Box 517, Cooper Landing, AK 99572. You can also donate directly at the library or online through our website, cooperlandinglibrary.com, by clicking the donate button at the bottom of the page.

We look forward to seeing you in the library soon!

Cooper Landing Community Club

As the days get shorter, long term and short term migrations are happening more and more for Cooper Landing residents! Folks are heading out on well-deserved vacations or off for the winter.

The Cooper Landing Community Club activity has been relatively quiet, but there is some activity! The Club hosted the popular Flyfishing Event for CLES and 2 memorials. Our community mourns the loss of long time resident Larry Smith and beloved Ben Sweeney.

The CLCC by-laws need updating and edits are being made by a committee consisting of past and current presidents, and headed by Marja Beltrami, our treasurer. Progress has been impeded by out-of-town-itis that some of us are enjoying but fear not - it will get done!

Community member David Nees has put energy toward creating a Road Improvement Committee that will address issues pertaining to the existing road through town, and what will be happening in the next handful of years.

Another community member, Joe Arnone, is working on garnering interest in a Biochar industry. You can hear more from both these fellas at the November meeting! Carlos Tree Service has been seen finishing up working on the downed tree slash piles per Chugach Electric orders. Many of us are doing our winter preparations and hopefully enjoying a little slower pace of life.

Our property hosts, Carolyn and Phil, have relocated to Girdwood for the winter but will be back next summer to continue their awesome work!

The next Cooper Landing Community Club meeting is Nov. 21 st at 6:00. See you there!

Holiday Swags

Cooper Landing School Fundraiser

Support Cooper Landing School Students by purchasing a Holiday Swag. The suspended spruce boughs are twined together then adorned with handmade bows, spruce cones, and ornaments. Swags are made entirely by students and staff. All funds raised support the student activity fund.

History of the Swag

The swag fundraiser was started by Joyce Koppert, former teacher at Cooper Landing School. She thought of the idea when she was living in Oregon and was helping her niece and nephew come up with ideas for Christmas presents. The swag shape was chosen because it was easier to make compared to a circular wreath. Since then, it has become our school’s tradition. Every November, we dedicated a day to assembling the swags.

How to Order

Call or email Cooper Landing School to place your order. Prices are $25 each. You do not need to pre-pay. Once the swags are ready, we will notify you by email or phone. Thank you for your generous support of Cooper Landing School! To Order Call or Email: 907-595-1244

Let’s bring the community together by lighting up the darkest time of year with fun-filled light attractions. White light or multi-colored light displays are welcomed and encouraged.
