Happy Autumn and Happy Halloween: The season is winding down and the leaves are falling.Hope everyone’s season has been productive and profitable.
We are not producing the Upper Kenai Guide going forward but are in the process of creating a new website that will hopefully enhance traffic to our sight and yours. These days the costs involved in producing a paper copy is increasing and we feel that your funds should be directed to a medium that will save you money and be more effective.
Don’t agree with the boards analysis, then join the board and help create a vision of what your chamber should be doing for you. We are in need of more Board of Directors. Please take a small amount of your time and help with the leadership in the Chamber.
Thank you,
Cheryle James President

All of the students were so excited to go on this wonderful field trip. The trip was amazing, we made lots of memories, and enjoyed our last summery moments before the snow comes. Thank you KMTA for helping make this trip possible. We appreciate the opportunity!

Spencer Glacier
Spencer glacier was so fun, it was an amazing experience that all the students loved. All the schools that came were Moose Pass, Hope School, Whittier Community School, and Cooper Landing School. All the schools went on a hike and we enjoyed eating ice from the water. The glacier was beautiful, the weather was great with little patches of rain sometimes but for the most part it was sunny. Many students enjoyed the train ride as well. The train ride was so fun. We saw three big bull moose, and many eagles. The architecture on the bridges over the Placer river was amazing.
In preparation we learned about glaciers in school. We learned about how glaciers are melting, and different kinds of glaciers. The two different kinds of glaciers are continental glaciers and valley glaciers. Continental glaciers are large sheets of ice that covers a large part of a continent, they are mainly found in Antarctica, greenland, and North America. While as valley glaciers consist in every continent except Australia. Spencer glacier is receding 100 feet every year. We are so glad we were able to see Spencer glacier before it’s too late.
Cooper Landing Library News
Our library recently found out that Alaska’s Public Library Assistance grant was cut 74%, after we had received a $5,000 to $7,000 grant every year since our library opened in 1983. Thankfully, there was a huge outcry across the state. It appears that the grant will be reinstated mid-October. Yay!
We are required to provide a community match for the grant. We have a yearly budget of approximately $14,000, so community donations are essential. Last year we did not quite make the $7,000 match. (The value of volunteer labor can be used as a match, if necessary, though that doesn’t pay the bills.) This year, after our plea to the community for help, we have surpassed the $7,000 goal. Thank you so much for supporting your local library! We have also applied for several grants and are feeling much better about the library finances for this fiscal year.
Our library provides invaluable services to the community. In addition to book and movie checkouts, we provide an online catalog, access to the Alaska Digital Library, internet, and up-to-date computers, printers, and fax for public use.
How you can help our library:
•Email eed.library.grants@alaska.gov with comments about the value small volunteer libraries provide to their communities and how much they depend on state support.
•Volunteer! Email Virginia at cooperlandinglibrary@gmail.com if you would like to contribute time. We are always looking for volunteers to work a regular shift, substitute, and/or provide expertise and service in specialized areas, such as accounting or information technology.
•Donate! Checks can be mailed to Cooper Landing Community Library, PO Box 517, Cooper Landing, AK 99572. You can also donate directly at the library or online through our website, cooperlandinglibrary.com, by clicking the donate button at the bottom of the page.
We look forward to seeing you in the library soon!

Cooper Landing Community Club
Cooper Landing is certainly glowing these days, showing off the golds of fall, and those rainbows…! Life is shifting with shorter days and fewer folks around, and it is peaceful. Things are shifting on the Cooper Landing Community Club Board as well! At the meeting on Sept. 19th, applications were accepted for the 4 open seats for the Board of Directors, and we had 4 applicants! Lorraine Temple (whose term is up), Yvette Galbraith, Kathy Lessard, and Rhonda Lynn will start their terms as of November, with Marja Beltrami staying on as the treasurer. It promises to be a dynamic group that will keep Cooper Landing evolving and address our needs and desires.
The Board is now responsible for more local issues since the Advisory Planning Commission has been limited in its scope by the Borough regarding what they can deal with. The concept of a “Community Council” was introduced by Robert Ruffner, Planning Director for the Borough; this committee would be able to advise on a wide variety of issues, including to many different agencies, and then take things to the Borough with a little more influence. The idea is in the very early stages and will be carefully examined, shared, and, of course, voted on before anything happens; it will be a long process.
A group representing some of the town’s organizations was able to tour the new bypass… WOW! The enormity of the project was brought into clear focus with the millions of tons of dirt being moved, the size of the wildlife under-crossings, and even the size of the equipment! It may easily be the most stunning highway in the state when all is done. The bike/pedestrian shoulders will be a huge asset. There is talk of having tours next spring for the community! The CLCC will keep you posted.
We had a full season of events at the Community Hall, for which we thank our events coordinator, Julie Almanrode, for doing a fantastic job of taking care of each group! This is our biggest income producer, but more importantly, we want all our guests to have the best experience and memories of their time here and by all reports, they did!

We lost a community member who was deeply involved in community affairs, always had a smile and was dearly loved; Shirley Wilmoth passed peacefully on Aug. 20th. If you have an idea of how to honor Shirley in memoriam, please reach out to Al Nierenberg.
We also give a shout out to Phil & Carolyn Hilbruner for being super property hosts all summer AND, on their recent marriage! Our president, Lorraine Temple officiated the wedding while drifting down the river accompanied by their dogs and yes, another rainbow! Congratulations to you both and thank you again! Have a great winter in Girdwood and see you next summer in your RV on property!
Enjoy these amazing fall days!
