RIBA RIBA AT VISION 2017 We are delighted to have the support of The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for this year's event. Construction is undergoing rapid technological change and tectonic shifts in the procurement landscape. For the profession to stay at the cutting-edge of architectural practice demands a culture of continuous learning. Architects must adapt to thrive, and Vision 2017 helps them to do just that. Its annual exhibition and associated educational programme is a rich forum for the exchange of knowledge and learning. By focusing on new products, building solutions and software, and by exploring trends in improving outcomes for clients and users, Vision 2017 is a useful event in the professional development of British architects.
RIBA President Jane Duncan said, "Architects' ability to synthesize vast quantities of information to solve complex problems with beautiful building designs adds extraordinary value for clients and users alike. This is only possible by keeping abreast of the latest products and software, and sharing stories from the vanguard of design practice at events such as Vision 2017."

Bioreceptive Design The design of urban habitat today is being fundamentally shaped by the outcomes of two key revolutions, biotechnology and computation, and our exposure to the long-lasting effects of climate change. Cruz takes these lifechanging phenomena as the foundation for radically new, sophisticated, yet also critical design and material solutions that help developing our future built environment. Nature plays a central role that goes beyond being a simple environmental regulator, model or inspiration, it is in itself the medium of a multi-layered design approach that is biologically and socially integrated. The lecture defines a paradigm shift from the notion of skin, one of the most used metaphors in contemporary architecture, to that of an architectural bark, offering a different interface for materialtectonic-environmental negotiations to take place between nature and architecture. A discussion on aesthetics and the unpredictable dimension of nature and growth challenges our traditional preference for ‘cleanliness’ in favour of more a contemporary understanding of natural and thus ‘impure’ aesthetics, which includes more a three-dimensional, complex and figurative materiality. A series of bioreceptive design projects will be discussed in the lecture, whereby material and environmental conditions are assessed at various scales simultaneously, and complex self generative computational tools reveal a parameter-driven, evolutionary design process explored as 1:1 building prototypes.

The National Graphene Institute: Dark Matter The RIBA award-winning National Graphene Institute is a world-leading research and incubator centre dedicated to the development of graphene. Located at the University of Manchester, it is an essential component in the UK’s bid to remain at the forefront of the commercialisation of this pioneering and revolutionary material. Architects Jestico + Whiles worked closely with Sir Kostya Novoselov from inception to completion of the project. Together with Sir Andre Geim, Novoselov first isolated graphene in 2004. The two were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010. Julian Dickens, Associate Director at Jestico + Whiles, will present the project, focusing on the extraordinary external façade ‘veil’. This is formed from hundreds of black mirrored stainless steel panels, each one containing thousands of perforations that reveal the equations used in graphene research. Human Centered Architecture in the Age of Data The amount of data generated worldwide doubles every two years. This data gets collected by countries, cities, corporations and individuals. But how can designers use this data to improve the built environment? Architecture firm NBBJ is a leader in the field of Design Computation. As part of the design process, digital experts create algorithms that analyse, evaluate and predict data to design human centered architecture. In this presentation, NBBJ Digital Practice Leader David Kosdruy will show how patients, researchers, office workers, and other user groups can benefit from applications, ranging from city analytics, London view corridor analysis, human behaviour predictions, interactive design tools and real time parametric prototyping.
The Pod - a New Building Type, for a New Place, Made in a New Way A mobile podcasting studio, designed to draw attention to and reference the BBC heritage of Stanhope’s new White City Place development. The concept of the moveable structure draws on loudspeakers and the movement of sound to create a disrupted cube with audio waves emanating from its centre. Circular windows act as the focal point allowing visual connections between the broadcasters and passers-by. A bold pattered façade was generated from the first spoken words transmitted: “One, two, three, four. Is it snowing where you are Mr Thiessen?” A bespoke digital script translated the recording into 350,000 printed pixels using a colour palette drawn from dn&co’s branding for White City Place. Intelligent Digital Buildings Technology has the potential to radically change the deepest rooted foundations of the built environment industry. Indeed, such changes are already being seen at all stages of the design, construction and operation of buildings. Better integrated design processes and networked sensing in operational buildings, coupled with advances in intelligent data analysis, are rapidly opening up new opportunities for the whole spectrum of people involved in buildings, from funders, designers, developers, operators through to end users. Furthermore, the opportunities should not be seen to end at the doors of buildings, but rather they extend to allow the better integration of buildings within the increasingly ‘smart’ cities in which they sit. This paper will explore some of these opportunities. Andrew Bullmore, Partner, Hoare Lea

Using Light as a Building Material We have been exploring how a particular theme transcends across a variety of media, materials and craftsmanship. Our themes of apparent structural lightness, the illusion of hovering structures lightly and delicately creating shelter were explored in our Wellington College, Gota Dam House and Lekki House projects. The artistic life of a building is expressed through the way it produces and modulates its light. We have been looking at how light can form 3D volumes, be captured and gently and carefully become object-like. The way an object or building is viewed can be altered by our motion, and by its environment. Light becomes a building material. Christina Seilern, Principal, Studio Seilern Architects

Building Sustainably in a Highly Constrained Site 51 Hills Road, a project for Jesus College, Cambridge University, is for high-quality, exemplar green commercial office accommodation on a site on Hills Road, the main high street that runs through the centre of Cambridge. The requirement was to make a building that would serve as a lasting asset to the College and make a positive contribution to the surrounding area, much of which is also owned by the College. The collective ambition of the client and design team was to make a BREEAM Excellent, low energy scheme, whilst making careful use of a tight site that is constrained by rights to light and surrounded by important listed buildings on two of its three sides. The building has won 9 awards including those from the Civic Trust, RIBA and British Council for Offices at national level. Jay Gort, Director, Gort Scott 1210-1225

Michael Stych draws on Arup’s experience around the world to look at how digital technology and big data is changing the way leading property managers are making key decisions in order to: deliver greater operational performance, provide new and improved end user experiences, and, improve the long term value of their portfolios. The session will discuss how the sector needs to create digital assets and then connect these to develop digital portfolios, so that every stage of the property life cycle is optimised. Using a run/grow/transform model, Stych will explain how property leaders can use individual intervention as the basis for a full digital property strategy. Michael Stych, Director, Arup 1640-1710
Keynote Address: Questions of Sustainable Nature Benjamin Garcia Saxe will join us via a live link from Costa Rica to speak of a broader subject than just that of tropical architecture. Ben will ask universal questions that are very relevant to our clients, to us, and to many all around the world. Many of our clients and people he speaks to have never even considered asking some of the most basic questions about how they run their life, what they want, comforts, etc... perhaps due to an inability to really dream out of the status quo.
1525-1530
Through examples, Ben will show how he and his clients have asked and tried to answer some tough questions… He will share what that led to inevitably and how perhaps through this very real and tangible process we are confronted with a certainty of what “sustainability” really is all about.

Keynote Address: Remaking Retail for the Circular Economy Traditional retail and architectural typologies struggle to meet the needs of consumers and citizens today. With the rise of the digital marketplace and the sharing economy along with the shift from spending on goods to ‘experiences’, designers must seek out ways to change retail spaces into places of reuse which can contribute to a socially responsible and environmentally sustainable circular economy. UNStudio has a long tradition of examining the evolution of retail typologies as they progress from traditional, monolithic spaces into complex, multifaceted ones which facilitate a broad range of interactions beyond the simple exchange of goods for money. Our approach to design considers not only the initial use of a building, but its potential future uses. This means our retail projects can become mixed-use entertainment, co-working and fitness centres, all the while maintaining their original retail function – this is the future of retail. Supurbia - a Strategy to Transform the Residential Suburbs of London in Response to the GLA’s London Plan Ben Derbyshire, Chair at HTA Design LLP and RIBA President Elect, presents a concept by HTA Design working with Savills. Supurbia is currently being evaluated by the GLA as a response to its London Plan consultation. Supurbia is a strategy for intensifying London’s suburbs balancing the inherent advantages with higher density and amenity value and yielding improved neighbourhood wellbeing especially to run down districts around transport nodes. The approach is twofold: redeveloping local main streets and parades as mixed-use places with increased housing, improved service and amenity provision; and, enabling owner-occupiers to develop their land, creating rich diversities of housing. Supurbia can be achieved by; - Area based initiatives - Involving residents - Using Local Development Orders and Plot Passports. The central proposition is to transform Nimbyism to Yimbyism by giving individual plot owners incentives within a structured framework to participate in high quality redevelopment, yielding £100-200K for each household and thus funding the intensification of outer London using private equity. HTA Design and Savills estimate that there may be capacity for as many as ¾ million new homes to be developed in outer boroughs of London over a generation. To find out more about the unique opportunity Supurbia could provide to transform the residential suburbs of London, visit www.HTA.co.uk and search ‘Supurbia’ or Twitter with hashtag #Supurbia. Quantifying Wellbeing, Dispelling the Myths Case Studies of Wellbeing Evaluation and Materials in Offices Not everybody can build new buildings that can be labelled ‘The Smartest Building in the World’ like The Edge in Amsterdam. Typical office buildings look more mundane, have limited controls and are not smart or intelligent. Even though most businesses spend 5% of turnover on property costs there is palpable lack of understanding of the level of impact of space on people even though people account for up to 90% of the overhead! Changes to address a demotivated and grouchy workforce typically include opening windows, introducing get active plans, bringing plants into the office and improving engagement – but practical advice to address the 5 key aspects of the physical environment improvement are missing. Why is that? A number of methods have emerged in the global market in the last 3-5 years. Are they improving the status quo? If so, how are they managing this? Mindful Design
Solar Shading for Better Buildings
For some time now, leaders in the multinational corporates, finance and hospitality have been looking down from their high places and paying ever more careful attention to issues of personal wellbeing. For them, it’s a matter of cranking up employee productivity or generating a new profit centre for guests who mistake luxury (and high-margin spa products) for inner solace. For designers, it’s a matter of getting that the driving principle has changed and is changing – from Sustainability to ‘Wellness’. There’s product - what you do and practice: how you do it. Aidan Walker’s ‘Seven C’s of Mindful Design’ proposes a map of the new professional and personal landscape.
Solar shading has a very significant part to play in the comfort and well-being of occupants and the energy use in buildings.

Valuing the Impacts from Noise and Overheating in Buildings The quality of the indoor living environment plays a vital role in protecting health and promoting well-being. A holistic approach to design is fundamental to achieving future proof and healthy places. Building design, however, treats environmental aspects as separate despite their interdependence for determining the impact on people. The case for noise and overheating is an example of how compliance with standards on one matter fail to provide a healthy environment when other factors are also taken into account. We have undertaken a study to give some perspective on the economic scale of this challenge. We have applied an approach to monetizing the impacts from noise and overheating in dwellings across London. We would like to share the findings from the study and raise awareness of the importance that good buildings design has in ensuring a sustainable future for all. Barry Jobling, Technical Director, Hoare Lea and Diana Sanchez, Associate, Hoare Lea
Andrew Chalk and Federico Seguro will present scientific evidence from an extensive cost-benefit analysis that justifies the case for considering solar shading at an early stage in design to enhance interfaces with other building services and enable more glass to be used. Considerable opportunities exist for both retro-fitting shading systems in existing buildings where single and uncoated double glazing which is more ‘permeable’ to solar energy, are still common. New build is just as important with increasing levels of airtightness and insulation leading buildings to be more prone to overheating throughout the year. Energy saving potentials appear substantial. Dynamic simulation modelling of a highly-glazed office carried out in EnergyPlus showed operational energy savings of 5-12% for internal shading and 37-40% for external shading if the reference building was provided with standard blinds, ultimately justifying the investment in the solar shading. However, in the UK the efficacy of solar shading as a passive solar control and daylight management tool is still poorly recognised, and there is a need to approach shading beyond the energy implications (reduced overheating) to embrace broader benefits such as comfort and productivity. Andrew Chalk, Director of Operations, British Blind and Shutter Association (BBSA) and Federico Seguro BSc MSc, Energy Specialist, National Energy Foundation (NEF) 1450-1510
Building Materials, Health and Indoor Air Quality Building Materials are the source of many hazardous emissions in buildings. Standards for indoor air quality have yet to be enforced in the UK. Modern forms of airtight construction are aggravating health problems. If we use less hazardous materials such as from wood fibre, wool, cellulose and hemp, these can improve air quality, reduce risks of damp and mould, and provide better energy efficiency through thermal storage. However mainstream professionals and the industry are prejudiced against natural materials and current standards, regulations and building physics downplay the importance of thermal mass, breathability and hygroscopic characteristics. The case against chemical materials is contrasted with the benefits of using natural materials based on research for the book Building Materials, Health and Indoor Air Quality. Why CLT Represents the Future of Architecture
1210-1230
The future of construction is timber. To avert climate catastrophe we have to use building materials that minimise energy use, that don’t take masses of energy to produce and that we don’t scrape from the surface of our planet. Timber is a natural carbon store that builds better buildings faster and at less expense. At Waugh Thistleton we have been on a mission to convert the world to timber for more than ten years in the last couple of years this has led us toward modular off-site construction - dragging construction out of the field and into the factory out of the 19th and into the 21st century. We are working with house builders to build both low rise and high rise volumetric housing from solid timber and here’s how...

Our 611 bed space student accommodation scheme, Chapter Lewisham is an industry acclaimed example of how offsite modular construction can be successfully implemented to deliver large scale projects in substantially less time but to just as high a standard as that attributed to traditional construction methods.
Cross Laminated Timber for Modular and Volumetric Construction Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) is playing a key role in the fast moving modular and volumetric construction sector and Europe’s largest CLT manufacturer, Stora Enso, is leading the way with several international modular CLT projects already completed and a range of UK partnerships underway. In this session Gareth Mason will explore the benefits and constraints of using CLT for modular construction and give a behind the scenes walk through the prefabrication process at Stora Enso’s modular facility at Hartola, Finland. Case study material will be drawn from OOPEAA’s internationally acclaimed Puukuokka Housing Project in Helsinki, which was completed in 2015 using Stora Enso modular CLT units. And Gareth will give an early stage update on his collaboration with Swan Homes to develop traditional house design through modularised customisation.
Darren Jones of architects shedkm will speak on delivering the innovative modular housing scheme ‘House’ for developer Urban Splash. The factory-built, customer-designed homes which launched last year in Manchester are now being delivered to two further neighbourhoods in Tyneside and Salford and several more sites are currently in the feasibility and planning stages. 600 units in 10 months - Offsite Modular Case Study of Chapter Lewisham
Vision Modular Systems constructed each of the residential floors over ground floor level, accounting for approximately 90% of the buildings overall floor area, with significant programme savings being achieved on site. Each of the 636 modules were delivered to site and erected in three months with overall construction of the scheme completed in 10 months. Tangible environmental and sustainability benefits included reduced lorry movements and fewer trades on site, each lessening the impact on the local area and community. The case study presentation will focus on design quality at speed, value maximisation and how offsite can overcome challenging site constraints.

To date pre-fabricated construction has been focused on projects where repetition of multiple units and speed of delivery brings a commercial advantage over traditional construction techniques. Archio architects have been exploring prefabrication techniques on several micro-projects from flower kiosks to new-build micro-housing, with the intention of bringing the benefits of pre-fabrication to smaller projects and refurbishments. Directors Kyle Buchanan and Mellis Haward will discuss a selection of recent projects and will suggest that mirco prefabrication has the potential to change the way that design teams are engaged in the delivery of projects. Kyle Buchanan, Director, Archio Ltd and Mellis Haward, Director, Archio Ltd 1540-1600
Overcoming the Barriers to Change in Construction Culture – Built Environment Exchange (beX) The objective of beX is to provide an accelerator education platform partnering University and construction industry partners internationally. This connectivity facilitates student mobility for enhanced experiential learning activities geared towards undergraduate, early career postgraduate and doctorate students. The opportunity will be open to students from all areas of study in order to widen the pool of available talent to not only tackle the construction sector skills deficit and diversification challenges, but also to harness the new skills required for changes in construction delivery (i.e. off-site manufacture, lean and integrated delivery, reliance and low carbon construction, BIM and other technology integration). This will attract some of our most talented graduates to the sector and lead to future sustainable communities of tomorrow whilst decarbonising the economy. Importantly this supports a cultural shift in the construction sector skills base in addition to supporting international knowledge exchange. The essential truth about daylight living Humans instinctively understand the benefits of daylight and how the lack of space and harmony in the modern world has a detrimental effect on our mood and behaviour. Our body clocks are regulated through perceptions of light and dark by the eye and many millennia of evolution can’t be ignored just because it doesn’t suit our lifestyle. The places where we live and work must consider our physiological need for daylight, our biological requirement for sleep and our psychological desire to be connected to the natural environment. We must adapt our thinking about the buildings we design and the way we chose to live our lives, to take account of the scientific evidence into the serious effects of contemporary life on our health and wellbeing. Unlike most warnings about a potential threat to our health, there are some simple beneficial solutions we can put into practice straight away.
