UNIT 3 NORTH-CENTER FOR CHILDREN’S SURGERY A mother who described herself as “nervous and terrified” wrote: “We had to bring our daughter for major surgery, but the second we walked through the 3rd floor doors we were greeted with a very friendly ‘hello’ from Janice Whitcomb and Liz Fletcher RN. My daughter was happy as pie.”

“The care and concern for my daughter was amazing, especially from Teresa Parkes RN and Teresa Robarge RN and the doctors and staff.” More praise goes to Michelle Finnerty RN, Laura Curtis RN, Patience Rempe RN and Child Life Specialist Janice Nellis “for the attentive care and support during this time of anxiety.”

Nicole Rogers RN was “caring, and hardworking with a sense of humor. She made your hospital proud!” Heidi Cross PA and Sean Campanie RN “were great!” Caitlin Alvin RN gave me “excellent care and was very professional.”

Stephen Cerminaro RN “was professional, kept me informed and made me feel comfortable. 5A is lucky to have him.”

A patient praised Cerminaro and Darlene Scott HCT saying they “were the best nurses I have ever had.” Another thanked Scott for “treating me like a person and friend” and for “going above and beyond to make my stay as nice as possible.” “She’s a very kind, understanding and dedicated worker,” said another. “I thank you

for everything,” summed another satisfied patient.

Also commended for excellence were Nicole Rodgers RN and Igor Melnichuk RN. Rodgers was “extremely nice, helpful, thoughtful and caring.” Melnichuk was praised along with elizabeth Haddock RN, elizabeth Young RN, Michael Donnelly RN, kaitlin Corona RN, Julia Zuranski RN, Sean Campaine RN, emily Brooks RN, and katie Cardinal RN for “making my long stay more bearable.

They all have excellent communication and nursing skills.” Another patient said Melnichuk along with kathleen Hudson RN “always put a smile on your face.” And speaking of smiles, Marcia Hill HCT always has one on her face and “has a great deal of compassion and shows support for her patients.”

Sarah Luckette RN shows “what true compassion is all about. I’m proud to be in the same field as she is.” Denise Haley RN is “a very kind, supportive and down-toearth person who takes pride in her job.” kaitlin Corona RN is “a kind and considerate listener,” Ryan Stanek RN is “a great guy,” and kerri Schultz RN “a really great gal.”

Letter from a patient: “You all have been good to me… you have tried to keep my spirits up when I’m feeling down. All of you hustle around like a swarm of busy bees, but there has never been a time when you have been too busy for me. You make me feel special and you all sincerely care. I want to thank each and everyone for not letting me get lonely.” kerri Schultz RN was commended by a patient for being “awesome,” who added: “I want to thank her for being so sweet, nice, friendly and funny.” Schultz was also identified along with Caitlin Alvin RN, Lisa Isabell RN, Joni RN, Sarah Luckette RN and Shannan Morrissey RN, for being part of “a great staff—friendly, professional and caring.” Another noted Morrissey as “an amazing nurse…

Her compassion is true, her love for her job as well as the patients is so obvious. Her warmth, compassion plus overall knowledge are far above most others and I’m so very thankful to have her as my nurse.” Another note of praise came for Schultz and Luckette and also included kristen Stopyra RN saying they are “very special and a testament to the nursing field. Their kindness, approachability, sense of humor and genuine concern is beyond reproach. I tip my hat to you ladies and pray I’m never in a hospital again, but if I am, let these ladies be the ones to take care of me.”

Commending kate Larabee, a patient said she “was fantastic.”

“She made me feel so special.”

Another patient praised Leah Marinelli RN: “She was always was a step ahead of me, anticipating

my needs—a very professional and pleasant RN; an asset to University Hospital.” Another patient praised Jackie Munro HCT, and Nicole McCracken RN for their care. “They made sure I had everything I needed to be comfortable.”

More comments rolled in for Nicole Rodger RN, saying: “she went above and beyond. She was the best nurse we had.” Another said Liz Young RN “made sure my needs as a patient were met to the fullest. You rock!”

They went above and beyond.

They told me they had something to show me. They took my husband and I to a different room, which had homemade decorations hanging all over the walls. They made a table and put a sheet over it, which looked like a linen tablecloth. They had flowers on the windowsill and rose petals on the table. They went to the cafeteria and picked up our dinners and had them on the table waiting for us. We had our Thanksgiving dinner in our own private room.”

Magda Pociecha RN was “very responsive.” kari Blake RN and Debbie Nanna RN “were awesome!” Mike Donnelly RN was “very attentive and extremely comforting during my stay.”

Meghan Cimino RN is “a very smart, kind and friendly person who can make anyone feel better simply by being in the room. She glows, is wonderful and just her smile alone was comforting during my stay.”

The staff on Unit 6A-General Medicine received many notes praising their care: “You are an exceptional group of people. You helped make my stay here a very pleasant one. Your fast and professional care was exceptional and I have appreciated your similes and readiness to care for my needs.”

“I enjoyed my stay as much as one can enjoy a hospital visit.

Laughter is truly the best medicine…you all know this and convey it with patients.” “Everyone was excellent: doctors, nurses, cleaning staff, pharmacists. This is by far the best hospital where I have been a patient.”

“How can you improve on excellent? Beginning with the eR, everyone was wonderful to me.

On 6A the nurses’ aides, nurses and doctors treated me in a quick and competent manner. Alice Carrington RN waited with me when I went for tests. I was glad, as I was scared to death. I feel very lucky that we chose this hospital.”

“My stay felt like I was at home” thanks to the nursing staff on 6A. “You were always professional and courteous. Special recognition to Jake Mackessy (RN in 8F Cardiopulmonary ICU), Casey Schenk RN, kat Valanecka CT and Staci Toia RN.” Jessica Hills RN was described as “phenomenal” and Christina Bellnier RN for “always being there when I needed help. After seeing what these nurses do, I have the highest respect for them.”

Another patient said Bellnier “is a very wholesome and a very compassionate nurse.” “I felt our connection as patient and nurse.

She is “thoroughly professional and on top of her game in every way.” Another patient added, “She is caring, helpful and has the knack to put you at ease.”

Victoria Sahm RN “is not only an excellent RN, she made me feel that we were like family and my recovery was a lot faster as a result.”

“Thank you for your concern when I was not assigned to your care,” commented another patient.

Another patient complimented Sahm saying she “deserves a big round of applause.” eric Santell RN was acknowledged for “taking the time to get me a meal after my test was done making me feel at home.”

“Thanks to Howa Thabet RN, Beth Michalko RN, katie Prosser RN, and Alice Carrington RN for being such highly trained staff members who are caring and considerate.” Michalko was also

acknowledged for “meeting the needs of the patient through persistent communication and follow up paired with a little creative thinking outside the box” and was commended along with Christina Bellnier and Jenna Spink HCT on 7A-Orthopedics for “attending my needs and never let me go long without checking to see if I needed anything.”

“Thanks to Ihsane Guesmia RN (6B-Medicine / Telemetry), and Jessica Hills RN who were specifically mentioned by two patients “for their efforts to contribute to my recovery.” Along with emily Glisson RN, they were complimented for being “very attentive to our needs—they actually tried to speak Spanish to my mom.” evelyn king RN and Anne Torpy RN in 6B-Medicine/Telemetry “are Informative, pleasant, energetic and helpful.” King was also acknowledged with erin kennedy HCT for being “terrific, always kind and cheerful” and for “checking on me and making sure I had what I needed.” “You all were great and are like family to me.” “They helped make my stay very comfortable.”

A patient commented, “You’re a special person kate Ulanecka HCT. I appreciate all the things you did and the way you’ve treated me.”

Another added thanks “for being so helpful and nice.”

Another patient noted that Ulanecka, Sara Urquhart RN and kristi Costello RN “provided excellence care.”

“6A team is such a team.” Jessica Hills RN, Peter Weeks, Adam Tourot RN on 6M-Medicine/ Telemetry, Adrienne Cean RN and erin kennedy HCT “all do their job in a professional manner and with a great attitude. I was frightened by my condition, but this team made me feel so much better. I now feel hopeful about my recovery and I’m

a better person for having met these great givers of health and recovery.”

Peter Weeks was commended for “doing a great job, getting what we need and for consideration of others.”

Thank you to Shawanda WhiteBest RN for “all of your kindness in taking care of me during the night.”

White was also noted along with “wonderful ladies” Amy Lawless RN in Emergency Services, Catina McFarlane RN, kim Johnson RN at the Joslin Diabetes Center and katie Prosser RN who were “very attentive to my needs. Hospitals scared me in the past. The three days that I was here have left me with many positive memories and a good experience.” McFarlane was also noted for being “very concerned, considerate and caring about how I was feeling.”

“I was extremely nervous the day I went for surgery. My nurse Camille earsley RN knew exactly what to say and do. She had all the answers.” Thanks to Nina Freeman “you help made my stay so much easier. “kristi Costello RN was “very helpful, considerate, clear and patient in helping us.” Amy Dederich RN “goes above and beyond the duty of a nurse—she was friendly and caring.”

“Thanks to katelyn klievoneit RN for your gentleness with my exceptional and thorough wound care. Great personality mixed with compassion equals a straight A+ nurse.” Another patient echoed these character traits and also thanked her “for her compassion.” klievoneit was also praised along with Dr. Victoria Cooper in Emergency Medicine, and emily Glisson RN for being “very helpful, compassionate and caring.

Glisson’s comments include “does everything quietly and quickly, sometimes even before you know you are going to need it.” “The nurses on 6A enjoy each other and

Jessica Hills RN was “attentive, caring and gathered any information I needed” She is “a hardworking, kind-hearted team player. She does a superb job.”

“Not only is Irina Litvinenko RN friendly and helpful, she uses her ability to find information for any problem you have.”

Joanne McCormick RN was “professional, caring, compassionate, understanding and with a sense of humor. Joanne took the time to explain all my meds to me.

This nurse made my stay at this hospital very comfortable.”

Another added: she was “very attentive to my needs, very patient and confident in her care.” More thanks came for “doing a real good job taking care of everyone so that they get what they need.”

Special recognition goes to Lyndsay Medeiros RN for “your kindness, knowledge and exceptional wound care you gave to me” and for being “personable and professional. Thank you for making my stay comfortable.” kate Prosser RN “was very cheerful and passionate about her job.” She made me feel very comfortable. I am very thankful for the attention she gave my mother and for the comfort she gave me when I stayed with her.”

“Katie is always with a smile and a positive thought,” commented another patient. Prosser along with Allen Hough HCT, Staci Toia RN and Adam Tourot RN on 6BMedicine / Telemetry “had great

bedside manners. They were on point, on time with everything and they took care of all my problems.

They explained everything to me before they did it and they were just overall very passionate and caring.”

Howa Thabet RN received praise “for her care and understanding with my husband. She went out of her way to answer any questions that we may have had.”

UNIT 6B MEDICINE/TELEMETRY Thanks came to Anne Torpy RN for the “motivation and ‘you can do it’ attitude,” and “she is always friendly, helpful and willing to assist you in anything. She has made my stay here very pleasant.”

“The guys” on 6B Medicine/Telemetry—eric Santell RN, Adam Tourot RN and Allen Hough HCT were thanked for “the little extra they did when they didn’t have to.” “I am so amazed and grateful for the caring and compassionate care that I have received.” Hough was also noted as “going above and beyond for me. He has been friendly, caring and humorous.”

Alan Hough HCT was also praised for “providing excellent care and with going above and beyond for patients.

Zelenyak RN. “My nurse Tonya Ippoliti RN was without a doubt the best, kindest and caring nurse I have ever experienced.” “Even in such a difficult time the care received on 6H Medical ICU was outstanding, especially by Bethany Sullivan RN and ken Bakker RN.” UNIT 6I-SURGICAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT elizabeth Dahlin RN “did a very good job working with my mother and explaining things in a way I could understand. She politely answered every question that I asked in a professional manner.

Before she did anything to my mother, she would explain herself first. She has a very positive attitude, takes her job seriously and shows a lot of initiative.” Intensive care nurse Tina Shattuck RN, was “friendly kind, and respectful. I would not have made it without her help.”

UNIT 6I-SURGICAL ICU/10GMEDICINE Steve Cerminaro RN, 6I Surgical ICU and karen Laufer RN, 10GMedicine “were very helpful, understanding, polite and kind.

They extended an extra hand when needed—that’s teamwork.”

A patient’s father praised the Burn Unit staff stating, “that everyone was empathetic and caring. [We] could not have asked from a better experience.”

Thanks and admiration to the dedicated 7A-Orthopedics staff— ”The nurses, caseworkers, physical therapists and housekeepers were very good, but the best care we received was from the catering associates who came around to get meal requests. They even helped a 58-year-old woman with Parkinson’s-like tremors get a tray so she could eat with her daughter in comfort.” Praise for “all doctors and nurses who have been very nice, helpful, professional and funny. You guys are

Michele Brown RN and Rita Burton, LPN are “outstanding nurses.” “Ben Whitt HCT got me a cup of herbal tea from Tim Horton’s in the middle of the night the night after my surgery when I couldn’t sleep and was miserable. Beverly Hunter HCT was equally wonderful. They were the “best part of my stay.” A patient thanked Wendi Burke RN, Tom Minnoe RN, Gracie Franklin HCT, Max Palmitese HCT, Beverly Hunter HCT and Paul knoop RN for “being wonderful.” Jenna Spink HCT and Dr. Housam Hegazy “are both courteous and professional and made my stay feel like I was at home rather than in a strange place.”

UNIT 7U-SECURE UNIT Thanks to the staff of 7U including Magen Buczek HCT, Arlene Zacholl RN for “always make my stay here pleasant.” Buczek was also recognized along and Alex Racines RN for “attending to me and seeking the information I needed. They showed integrity and respect and made my stay here as comfortable as possible.”

Racines and Buczek were also acknowledged for “taking care of me beyond their duties and treating me with respect along with kate McQuiggan RN, karen Muldowney RN, and “who were commended for being “very attentive performing their duties in a professional manner.”

UNIT 8E-CORONARY ICU

Vilma Lopez, Shannon Strong RN, and Liz Hertig RN were great nurses. They all went above their duty for me.” Thanks to Richard Van orden RN, Jamie Waterstripe RN, elena Price RN, Brenda Langdon RN, Juanita Hicks HCT,

Vilma Lopez RN and Heidi Henderson for the wonderful care. “Your nurses are a God send. Without them to explain we would have been lost. Thanks to Meade Piercey RN, Alicia Taylor RN, Patricia Richardson RN and Richard Van orden RN. In addition, Juanita Hicks HCT and Danita Freeman HCT were also “pleasant and caring, making day to day life a bit easier.”

UNIT 8F-CARDIOPULMONARY ICU Our father received wonderful care from 8F nurses, respiratory therapist and physicians. There were a few challenging days and nights, pre and post surgery during which it seemed as though someone was attending to his needs, minute by minute. Even the most subtle change or sign of restlessness was addressed. We know there are many people behind the scenes, attending to the patient and families, from the ever-sweet receptionist, charge nurses, infectious diseases physicians, respiratory therapists, physician’s assistants and attending physicians.

To all of them, we express our appreciation for the wonderful care they gave not only to our father, but also to the family. They addressed our concerns and questions, providing explanations of the medical decisions and kept us fully informed of his condition every day. We would like to extend our gratitude to the following for their outstanding expertise, compassionate care and wonderful service: Dawn Bigtree RN, Nicole Quilty RN, Amanda Tidd RN, kristen Iglesias RN, Abby Cummings RN, Josh Bartholomew RN and Respiratory Therapist Joe Matuszak RRT. Dawn Bigtree RN, kristin Graham RN, Sarah Coyne RN were “very knowledgeable, courteous and caring.” No matter what Jake

Mackessy RN was doing, “all you had to do is ask a question and he would find the answer for you. He is always helpful, friendly, polite and caring.”

UNIT 8G-MEDICINE/CARDIO Laura Wynne RN, kate Peters RN and Cassie Skeele RN, “were outstanding.” Carmen kazinski RN, Michelle Abernethy RN and Tiffani Wood RN “were the best.” kazinski along with Lebi Darling RN were noted “outstanding” while Wynne RN was also described as “amazing.” Night nurse Abernethy was praised as being “dedicated” along with David Snyder RN who was complimented again as “friendly, concerned, informative and seemed to honestly care about me as a patient.” Stacie Livingston RN, Laurie Indick RN, eryn ossont RN and Jim Reid RN were “very warm, caring and comfortable—they unquestionably aided in my health recovery.”

Special thanks to Sheree Dobson HCT, elaine Lawrence HCT, Josephine Church RN, Christine Lesher RN and Lebi Darling RN for “the excellent care, compassionate encouragement, clinical skills and professionalism.” David Snyder RN provided “exceptional care, his compassion and concern went above and beyond his normal duties.”

UNIT 9E- NEURO STEP-DOWN “The staff on 9e-Neuro Step-Down was wonderful, service was great and the accommodations are better.”

“Best nursing staff I have ever dealt with.” Hannah Mulry RN was “helpful, caring and worked hard. I would consider her a model for all RN’s.” Another patient praised Mulry RN “because she took the time to help me understand my meds and procedure.”

Another patient complimented Debois for being “professional and extremely smart. I felt like ‘all would be well’ when he was there. She also said that her 23-year-old son was able to “witness what a great example of a male nurse he is, as he is going to school for nursing himself.”

Bill Burnett RN is “absolutely phenomenal” ands “an asset to the hospital.”

NURSING-9F-NEUROSCIENCE ICU Linda Aue RN and the staff on 9F “could not have done better if they took care of me at my own home!” “Awesome nurses—Josh onyan RN, Jessica Collver RN and Nicole Staring RN.” UNIT 9G-NEUROSCIENCE MED SURG Gratitude was expressed “for the quality of care provided by all members of the 9G staff. They “acted in a professional and compassionate way, doing their jobs with enthusiasm. I was frightened and their compassion and understanding helped me more than I can say.” Mentioned were emily Russell NP, Amy Dalton RN, Amy Luchsinger RN, Misty Files HCT, Michelle Vallelunga RN, kevin Slater HCT, Brandon Crandall HCT and karen MacNaught RN. kyle Choquette RN, Ashley Brown RN and kelley Serens RN went “above and beyond with care.” Another patient said Brown “was the BEST NURSE I’VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE.” She was knowledgeable, kept the patient

informed and always addressed her concerns with doctors.

Norman Paul HCT is “a walking champion—he is warm, friendly and encouraging.” Christina Way RN “treated me like a friend.”

UNIT 10EHEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY Letter from a patient: “Dear Dr. Jonathan Wright: You are a miracle worker. You had hope when no one else did and I thank you for that. Thanks to the Administration for having the sense to hire nurses aides like Ashlee Chretien HCT (you are lucky to have her) and the others on 10e who made me feel better every time they came into the room.

I absolutely love all of the 10e care team. They are never going to see me again because I am on Miracle Number 4. Upstate University Hospital deserves to be proud of each and every member of the staff, from food service to the aides and housekeepers, not to mention the nurses. I thank you all.”

NURSING-11E-PEDIATRICS “We were so happy with the way Heather Winday RN and Andy Butchko RN cared for our son.”

Butchko was praised along with Chuck Norris RN for being “upbeat and making us feel very comfortable. You can tell that Maura Gorman RN, Jarod Gabello RN and Heidi Turner RN “love their job. “Nancy Nellenback RN “used humor for healing. UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL Letter from patient’s family: Patient Access Services employee Hilda Doughty told about her experience sitting by her husband Raymond’s bedside before he passed away in March. “University Hospital became my home away from home.” Although the memory saddens her, she “will always remember the wonderful nurses, doctors HCTs, dietary, secretaries, and housekeepers.”

Her husband Ray was admitted multiple times and intubated nearly 20 times. “Every time we came in, I was always treated with respect and kindness.” If she was “down in the dumps that one smile or rub on the shoulder would always make it easier to cope.”

Since he became a “regular” on 8E, housekeeping and dietary got to know him well. When he was having a bad day, “the girl who wrote his menus knew what he liked.” Once when she had to leave, she felt guilt when he had to be intubated again. “The nurse told me not to blame myself. This was comforting to me and I was

able to work knowing he was getting the best care possible.”

The ED also managed to keep him alive every time he came in. “I would always brag about the great job the ED did as that is where I work. When they knew Ray was coming in, they were ready and waiting. The nurses took extra good care of me, as a wife and employee. I am starting to tear up as I will always consider the ED and 8E my extended family.”

It is in no small part, thanks to this team that we were able to cope and make sound decisions during difficult times.

A special thanks goes to the first interaction we had at Upstate with Dr. elliot Rodriguez in Emergency Medicine. He was professional, helpful and sympathetic to our situation. He worked with my mom to ease her fears and offered great encouragement.

Thrown into a situation with more questions than answers, Dr. Peter Cronkright, in Medicine systematically worked through the issues and provided us with thoughtful, intelligent, intuitive answers as he learned them. As I pulled into the drop off area, a guard advised me to advance to the dismemberment area. Then I was very cordially greeted by the Ambassador Services personnel.

The gentleman proceeded to help my husband, escorting him personally to the department for his procedure.

After parking and a friendly shuttle ride back to the entrance, this same ambassador recognized me and personally escorted me to my husband. After the procedure, another ambassador escorted us both to the waiting shuttle and we were loaded and transported back to the garage—the shuttle driver even helped get him settled into our vehicle. All I can say is WOW! And a huge thanks to you for this service.”

Ryan rushed to assist the ROC staff and ran with them to the ER as the patient needed immediate treatment. He then located the patient’s father and escorted him to the ER. Larry comforted the father long after the staff left. “It was very moving. He was fantastic.”

Unit’s kelly Reed RN for going above and beyond: “I came to the Burn Unit to perform an echo exam on a critically ill patient. Kelly helped me immensely with equipment and putting the patient in the proper position for echo images” even though the time may have been inconvenient for her.

Dr. William Grant recognized paramedic Jay Scott in Emergency Medicine “for his incredible effort and compassion.” Scott teaches in the Emergency Medicine Simulations Center, the ACLS program and paramedic programs when he is not working for NAVAC on weekends.

Just a few examples of his energy during his normal ‘working’ hours: on Monday, he found and assisted a co-worker who had a medical emergency; on Tuesday, he found and assisted a faculty member who had a major head laceration from falling on Harrison Street; on Wednesday, he found and assisted an individual under the influence who was passed out in the EM-STAT parking lot. “Jay exemplifies what Upstate should be all the time; helping people in need whenever and wherever we find them.”

BREAST CARE CENTER Megan Chase in Human Resources bestowed accolades on Margo Reynolds from the Breast Care Center: “My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in August. I was put in touch with Margo Reynolds by one of my co-workers. From the beginning Margo was fantastic and her customer service skills were phenomenal. Margo quickly scheduled an appointment for my mother with Dr. kort and ensured that all the details were in order for the appointment. Any questions we had, Margo answered with compassion and a caring attitude. I thank Margo for her great attitude, empathetic ear and dedication to patients.”

EMERGENCY MEDICINE

DUPLICATING AND PRINTING SERVICES Marketing’s Rebecca Janowski praised Ron Mullen, Randy Colella and Jim Sinko from Duplicating for voluntarily coming to work over a weekend for eight to 10 hours each day, to catch up on 40 print jobs, some as large as 5,600 impressions.

The backlog had piled up while their color printer was down for nine previous consecutive business days, due to technical issues.

Antoinette Smith in Ambulatory Medicine complimented Environmental Services’ Sue Campanaro-Murphy. Adult Medicine at UHCC has been in the process of purchasing privacy curtains for two exam rooms that have been dedicated for GYN exams. “When I asked Sue if her department happened to have any extra curtains to share, she not only sent over two sets with hooks, and also had them altered to custom fit our rooms. Staff and our patients are very happy!”

Andrea Williams RN praised Allen Wright in Environmental Services: “Allen did a wonderful job on our unit. The floors were very clean and he was even cleaning the walls. I contacted Pam for advice and with last minute notice she immediately met to discuss our best options. Pam then immediately trained a Payroll employee on how to use the software. I thank Pam for acting quickly. She really saved the day.”

Riggall also recognized IMT/Educational Communications’ eric Porter, for going above and beyond to help a moment’s notice. At very short notice before the presentations at Community General, Eric lent a laptop and also made a trip up to Community General the day before to make sure the laptop and the AV would work effectively. “He was wonderful!”

HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY The Health Science Library’s Melissa Mcelroy-elve acknowledged Virginia Sidari in Library Services for showing “tremendous flexibility when EdComm was videotaping in the FRC. She maintained great service to customers while she hand-recorded the check out of materials and helped move materials so taping could happen at the same time. She is terrific.” Sidari was also praised by Nancy Prott in the President’s Office for “extending a helping hand to me with a last minute project that I needed completed the following day. As a team captain for the Heart Walk last year, she fielded the largest team and one of the top fundraising teams. She has already sold hundreds of red hearts and is on her way to establishing another winning team this year.

For Wear Red Day, she organized over 50 OR staff to purchase red hats to wear that day. She also organized her co-workers to participate in a polar plunge for charity. She is a dynamo and really

PEDIATRICS Lisa Blystone and Patty Mondore in Pediatrics wrote to say “Sarah Irish is a true Upstate Star.” When Peds staffers called to say that the library in the Children’s Hospital was in disarray she immediately called housekeeping and “put on some gloves, got out her Shout wipes. She dusted, wiped everything down, and even tackled a couple of spots on a chair and on the carpet.” Sarah has been checking the room regularly and has also put in a request for quarterly carpet cleaning. “Thanks for going above and beyond.”

PHYSICAL PLANT/HVAC Nancy Burtis from the Health Sciences Library lauded Jesse Brummer from Physical Plant/HVAC. “We have a specialized area of the HSL which houses our historical collections, and is very sensitive to temperature. Whenever we have a problem, Jesse responds very quickly to investigate the problem. He always follows through to the completion of the task, and efficiently informs us of the result of his efforts. We appreciate that Jesse understands the importance of temperature control in this area, and places a great deal of caring and concern in his work.”

PM&R REHABILITATION FRONT DESK STAFF Lori Holmes in PM&R Rehabilitation commended the front desk staff at PM&R Rehabilitation after a woman fell getting into her vehicle. “Tashico Williams obtained assistance from Diana Clark NSC who waited with the patient while Tashico went to alert security and a nurse from the ED, who then assisted the patient. katie Pollock and Diana both checked the patient several times while she was in the ED to ensure she was okay while awaiting treatment.”

PRE-ADMISSION TESTING The Center for Children’s Surgery’s Julie Bell RN acknowledged Sue keenan RN from Pre Admission Testing. “Sue is an asset to the Center for Children’s Surgery. She always follows through and works with us to do what’s best for our patients and families.”

“I give credit to Gloria Bivens in Pre-Admission Testing for being both an exceptional Upstate employee and job trainer,” said Jennifer Gibbs-Davis. She laid down the foundation for her to piece a detailed job detail together, explaining why every component went together. Performing the job in this fashion “brought an increase in my production level and met my goal of processing all of the Outgoing/Outflow patient charts.

Gloria really has a way with teaching others, relaying information and emphasizing while learning while being relaxed. She puts care into the work she does for Upstate and she has brought that out even more in me.”

SURGERY CENTER The staff at the Surgery Center recognized one of their own, Susan

Carleo RN “for going above and beyond”: Carleo recently cared for a patient who had a nurse’s aide who provided exceptional care to the patient both here at the surgery center and at home. The patient was very grateful for the aide. “Sue was so impressed with the care that she called the nurse’s aides’ employer to tell them what a great a job he did. In return, this gentleman was recognized and received a raise.”

SOCIAL WORK AND SPIRITUAL CARE Veronica Adsit, an NP in cardiothoracic surgery, thanked Dr. Norma Cooney, social worker katherine Milcarek-Burke LMSW and Spiritual Care’s Rev. Virginia Lawson for their compassion and professionalism.” Her finance’s father was a school bus driver who was brought in full arrest and died in the ER. “The entire situation was shocking to all of us. Dr. Cooney, katharine and Reverend handled the situation remarkably well. It was definitely one of my worst nightmares, but you made it so much easier and better.” She wanted to “commend all of them for all they did.”

UNIVERSITY CARE FOR VISION CENTER Julie Margrey RN recognized the entire staff at University Care for Vision Center. “Staff are always willing to help us in the ENT Clinic, either obtaining visit notes or scheduling an appointment. AIDS WALK/RUN (JUNE)

Team Upstate represents the contributions of all employee and student volunteers — whether they participate in Upstatesponsored events or those in the community. It was formed to promote public awareness of the University’s contributions to

Team Upstate was the largest team at the 19th Annual AIDS Walk/Run. The event raised more than $186,000 for prevention programs and to support basic needs of people living with HIV/AIDS. Led by primary captain Ray Joss, Clinical Pathology (pictured first row kneeling, far right), and captain Edgar Johnson, Office of Diversity and Inclusion (pictured far left, second row) at Beaver Lake Nature Center, Baldwinsville. Almost 40 people represented Team Upstate and included staff from Human Resources, Clinical Pathology, Nursing 8F, Nursing Recruitment, Employee & Student Health, UHCC, Project SEARCH, Biochemistry, Emergency Management, and many of their colleagues, friends, and families (several not pictured). The 19th Annual AIDS Walk/Run marked 30 years since the Center for Disease Control recognized AIDS as a disease. In response to the “30 years is enough” campaign the city, county, and the AIDS Community Resources Center painted the town red to include painting a red stripe down Salina Street in Syracuse. Team Upstate raised over $2,600 for this powerhouse community event for prevention programs and to support basic needs of people living with HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS continues to infect 50,000 people every year, and New York State leads the country in the number of diagnosed cases.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER BALDWIN GALA (MAY) The gala benefits the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund and is hosted by Turning Stone Resort and Casino, Verona, NY. The Fund has awarded more than 60 research grants totaling in excess of $3 million to medical research.

BACKPACK AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE (AUGUST) Close to 500 volunteers including Upstate employees helped thousands of Syracuse children and their families get ready for the new school year, thanks to receiving backpacks and school supplies at the annual Mary Nelson Youth Day Barbeque. Nelson, an Upstate Radiology employee, started the barbeque ten years ago to encourage young people to stay in school.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH (FEBRUARY) Upstate Medical University celebrates Black History Month with a variety events throughout February. The 2011 opening ceremony featured keynote speaker Syracuse Police Chief Frank L. Fowler. Fowler was recognized along with Upstate employee Mary Nelson for their contributions to the community.

BLOOD DRIVES (JANUARY, APRIL, JULY AND OCTOBER) Supported by the Advocates for Upstate Medical University. The successful drives that met or exceeded our goal saved the University Hospital in blood pricing.

BOWLING BENEFIT FOR CANCER CENTER (MARCH) Diane Cullinan and Doug Rosenthal from IMT Hospital Info Systems organized a bowling event to benefit the new Upstate Cancer Center. A large crowd of supporters cheered on seven Upstate teams, raising a total of $115.

CPS-3 STUDY (OCTOBER) First year students from College of Health Professions Radiation Therapy program, Class of 2013 volunteered to participate in the American Cancer Society’s historical Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). The study, which enrolled a diverse population of up to half a million people across the United States and Puerto Rico, will help researchers better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer. DUCK RACE TO END RACISM (JUNE) Team Upstate volunteers participated in the annual Duck Race to End Racism. Maxine Thompson holds Upstate’s “Values” duck which received the award for best portrayal of mission and values at the Annual Duck Race to End Racism (see photo right). The race at Syracuse’s Inner Harbor, is hosted by InterFaith Works of Central New York. This is the second year in a row that an Upstate duck, decorated by Marketing’s Susan Keeter, has been an award-winner.

FATHER DAUGHTER VALENTINE BALL (FEBRUARY) Upstate employees volunteered at the Father Daughter Valentine Ball which was attended by more than 700 dads and little girls. The annual event raised more than $25,000 to support pediatric services at Upstate.

RELAY FOR LIFE (APRIL) Several dozen Upstate students, faculty and staff took part in a relay to benefit the American Cancer Society, sponsored by the the Upstate Medical University chapter of Colleges Against Cancer.

Helping our Neighbors With extraordinary Volunteerism FRIENDS OF DOROTHY HOUSE (FEBRUARY) Upstate students assisted in the monthly dinner to benefit Dorothy House, which offers home-based care to people with AIDS in a variety of ways, with a primary focus on hospice care.

School, Syracuse. Upstate Trauma Services offers safety education, helmet fittings, and helmets at reduced cost to families as part of their trauma prevention services.

“Any time you use something that moves faster than you run, you need to wear a helmet,” advises Adkisson.

Upstate students participated in a health fair at Green Hills Market to promote nutrition and health education.

Kristi Costello reported that 6A staff adopted three children for the holidays through the Cornell University Elf Program, providing them with clothing and toys. In addition, they also helped a local animal shelter by providing pets with food and other items.

HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY TABLE Last year, the Upstate grounds crew learned that a tree in the Weiskotten courtyard had to be cut down because of safety concerns. For years, many had tried to save the ailing American Black Walnut tree.

To preserve the tree in the only way possible, some wood was salvaged. The planks were cured for a year in the carpentry shop in the basement of Upstate University Hospital.

President David Smith liked the idea of creating a table from the wood for the Health Sciences Library.

Sean Behm, an Upstate carpenter, offered to make the table, basing its design on the work of architect/ woodworker, George Nakashima (1905-1990). In keeping with Nakashima’s designs, the top of the table retains the angled curve of the tree trunk, is built entirely without nails and screws, and is constructed with handmade wooden pegs, wooden dowels and glue.

“Woodworking is my passion,” said Behm, who took just a week and a half to build the table between standard carpentry requests.

HEART WALK (APRIL) Nearly 600 members of Team Upstate people participated in the Heart Walk, raising more than $30,600 for the American Heart Association.

IMT WIDEWATERS’ VOLUNTEER PROJECTS (YEAR ROUND) IMT at Widewaters volunteered as a group at SPACA, the Ronald McDonald House, Rescue Mission, Pheo Paratroopers, Cancer Center and American Heart Association’s “Go Red For Women” campaign. In addition, they purchased DVDs for the children’s hospital and participated in charity walks for American Cancer Society, Light the Night and Diabetes, and also joined in the Jingle for Jeans fundraiser.

The golf outing benefited the Golisano Children’s Hospital.

The hospital’s carpenters made a model of a “linear accelerator” for pediatric radiation therapy patients, so they wouldn’t be frightened or stressed when they have to undergo real radiation treatments. They also built a second model for Radiation Therapy students to demonstrate how the linear accelerator works.

MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER WALK (OCTOBER) More than 100 members of Team Upstate raised $12,862 for the American Cancer Society at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

MYSTERY MALT AND MERLOT (APRIL) The wine, microbrew, cheese tasting and silent auction event, is sponsored by the Advocates for Upstate Medical University and University Hospital’s Nursing Program.

PROJECT SEARCH (YEARLONG) Upstate mentors participate in the Project SEARCH High School Transition Program. The program takes place in a health care or business setting in which total immersion in the workplace facilitates teaching and learning through feedback and application of new skills.

PADDLE FOR THE CURE (SEPTEMBER) The leisurely two-mile paddle on the Moose River in Old Forge, NY benefited the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Fund of CNY and supports grants awarded to Upstate Medical University research for breast cancer.

PAIGE’S BUTTERFLY RUN (JUNE) More than 2,000 participated in the 15th annual Paige’s Butterfly Run and raised more than $150,000 for pediatric cancer research and patient care at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.

PAT’S PAVEMENT POUNDER (SEPTEMBER) Upstate employees volunteered at the 12th and final Pat’s Pavement Pounder, which benefited childhood cancer research in memory of Patrick Cole. The event raised more than $13,000 for pediatric cancer care and the new Upstate Cancer Center.

RACE FOR THE CURE (MAY) Team Upstate raised more than $5,000 at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure to support breast cancer education, treatment and research.

REFUGEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (YEARLONG) Med student and student ambassador Sean Haley and Executive Director of Hopeprint, Nicole Watts, are the driving force behind the refugee assistance movement in Syracuse. Hopeprint is an organization that helps refugees arriving in Syracuse to overcome the barriers of language and culture, and to resettle themselves in the areas of economy, health, leadership, education and justice.

RIDE FOR RESEARCH MOTORCYCLE RIDE (JUNE) The motorcycle ride benefited the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund and supports grants at Upstate Medical University for breast cancer research.

SALT CITY HOMELESS OUTREACH PROGRAM SC HOPE (JANUARY - MARCH) Upstate medical students provided free medical care at the weekly clinic in the basement of the Mulroy Civic Center during the spring semester.

SALVATION ARMY (JANUARY - MARCH) Upstate students brought health education to teenagers twice a month throughout the spring semester. Another group of Upstate students brought nutrition and health education twice a month throughout the spring semester to youth ages 5-12 at the After-School Program of the Salvation Army. In addition, more Upstate students, along with Dr. Seuss, the Cat in the Hat, and Sidney the Kidney from the National Kidney Foundation of CNY, organized a pediatric health fair at the Salvation Army’s After-School Program for 50 youths ages 5-12.

SAMARITAN CENTER PROJECT (APRIL) Team Upstate volunteers served 150 meals to those in need at the Samaritan Center in Syracuse.

SOUP TO NUTS (APRIL) Upstate’s Marketing and University Communications held a “soup kitchen” lunch led by Stephanie DiJoseph.

Contributions of $850 were raised for the Upstate’s Cancer Center.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS POLAR PLUNGE (DECEMBER) Last December, nine staff members participated in the Special Olympics’ Polar Plunge (below), raising more

than $1,200. In addition, 41 scarves—many made by the OR staff and their families—were collected for the Special Olympics athletes to wear in the opening ceremony. The staff also collected mittens, scarves and hats for Syracuse City School children who were in need of outerwear.

STATE FAIR (AUGUST/SEPTEMBER) At the 2011 NYS Fair, Upstate Neurology’s Leann Rhynders RN talked about stroke prevention and gave out gold frisbees in recognition of Upstate Stroke Center’s Gold Plus status.

VETERANS DAY MEMORIAL SERVICE AND TRIBUTE (NOVEMBER) The Upstate community recognized our Upstate veterans and honored all who have served in the United States Armed Forces at the wreath laying ceremony on Veterans Day.

UPSTATE OPEN (JULY) The golf outing at Village Green’s Foxfire in Baldwinsville benefits the new Upstate Cancer Center and the Upstate Cancer Center Research Institute.

UPSTATE SICKLE CELL DISEASE FUND Danielle Frazer of Upstate’s Financial Services and other parishioners from the People’s AME Zion Church of Syracuse donated $4,000 to the Upstate Sickle Cell Disease Fund, which supports research on the disease and provides assistance to pediatric and adult patients with sickle cell disease. This is the third year that the church has donated to the Upstate fund, and total donations from the church are close to $10,000. Frazer,

WALK FROM OBESITY (SEPTEMBER) The CNY Bariatric Surgery Center at Upstate sponsored the second annual Walk From Obesity. Forty participants raised $2,500 to raise awareness of the disease of obesity, childhood obesity and morbid obesity.

WALK TO CURE DIABETES (JDRF) (SEPTEMBER) The 5K walk/run raised over $1,000 to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

WEAR RED DAY (FEBRUARY) Many Upstate employees participated in National Wear Red Day to raise awareness of heart disease in women.

Upstate at Community employees Participate in outreach events MEDICAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCE AND HEALTH (MASH) CAMP (FEBRUARY) Junior high school students from across Onondaga County explored the world of health care at Community General at the county’s only Medical Academy of Science and Health (MASH) Camp. Healthcare professionals offered students invaluable knowledge about various careers through interactive activities in a wide range of departments.

FALL SWING” GOLF TOURNAMENT (SEPTEMBER) The Advocates for Upstate Medical University hosted its annual “Fall Swing” golf tournament at West Hill Country Club. Event proceeds topped $6,000 and more than 100 golfers participated in the annual event.

HANDMADE PILLOWCASE DISTRIBUTION (SEPTEMBER) Community General recently joined in the tradition of giving handmade pillowcases to patients. The pillowcases are made from material that is donated to the Manlius Senior Center. There, several people— including UUHCG volunteers—sew the cases that are later delivered to the patients.

TOWSLEY PRO-AM GOLF EVENT (JUNE) More than 200 people attended the first-ever Towsley Pro-Am to benefit Community General Foundation.

The event—presented by IBEW Local Union #43/NECA —was hosted at the Shenenodah Golf Club at the Turning Stone Resort. Close to $150,000 was raised to support the Community General Foundation.

The team surpassed its goal of 30 walkers with 50 people participating in the event, who raised more than $2,900 to benefit the American Heart Association.

2N REHABILITATION RECEIVES AWARD OF EXCELLENCE FOR SAFE PATIENT HANDLING In recognition of their advancements in safe patient handling (SPH) and dedication to patient and caregiver safety, 2N Rehabilitation (pictured above) was presented with the inaugural University Hospital award. Starting in 2005, 2N management and staff, along with the Ergonomics Steering Committee, have worked to create a SPH program on the unit, including staff training, SPH Coaches, patient lift and transfer protocols and equipment purchases including ceiling lifts. They have worked to change the culture on their unit to create a “minimal-lift environ-

ment” where equipment is now used to lift and move patients, especially over 35 pounds. Thirty-five pounds is the NIOSH (National Institute of Safety and Health) recommended weight limit for patient handling. From 2004 to 2010, there has been an 82% reduction (17 compared to 3) in staff injuries, a 100% reduction (342 compared to 0) in lost work days, and a 99% reduction ($58,000 compared to $91) in workers’ compensation costs, all related to patient handling.
