THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER FOR UP WITH TREES - FALL 2018
GREEN LEAF GALA: SEASONS
On September 29th, Up With Trees invited patrons to the ninth annual Green Leaf Gala. Welcomed by a treecovered landscape, patrons entered the DoubleTree at Warren Place to enjoy a multitude of opportunities.
Guests participated in a classic Wine Pull, the famous Gold Leaf Paddle raffle, an art and experience-filled silent auction, a festive photo booth, a live auction with numerous unique packages led by Tony Wisely, games, and live entertainment by Tulsa favorite, Weston Horn and the Hush. It was truly a night of celebration. Thanks to the efforts of our Event Co- Chairs Christen Webb and Kathy Vancuren, Honorary Chairs, Joanna, Larry, Jennifer, and Joseph Potts, and our wonderful Gala
Committee, the evening was a great success and raised more than $170,000. The dollars raised at this year’s Gala will help us continue our mission to plant, preserve, and promote Tulsa’s urban forest and create a healthy, beautiful city for many seasons to come.

FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR STEVE GRANTHAM
Another season has come and gone at Up With Trees and we are thankful for your investments. Whether as a volunteer, an advocate for our mission, or a donor, you
are making a difference. What we accomplish with your continual support not only has an immediate impact, but the benefits of your investment will grow as do the
trees across our city. Thank you for investing in a healthier and more beautiful Tulsa through Up With Trees.
Tulsa’s green spaces and trees make it uniquely beautiful; every time I drive past one of the classic wooden Up With Trees’ signs, I smile because I am reminded that trees are a symbol of Tulsa’s commitment to the environment and progress. I love helping Up With Trees create opportunities for the people of Tulsa to enjoy and interact with nature. - Vanessa Thompson, Board Member

HAMILTON ELEMENTARY OUTDOOR CLASSROOM
Before
Phase II
Phase III
As an expansion of our Tree School program, Up With Trees implemented an outdoor classroom at Hamilton Elementary School for students to learn and play surrounded by nature. Thanks to the generous donation by the Joe and Jean Holliman Family Foundation, we established 97 trees, 114 shrubs and 288 perennials ranging from tall evergreens and
Oklahoma’s beloved redbud trees to goldenrods and ornamental grasses. The outdoor classroom is separated into five main sections designed to enhance the students’ learning environment. The central meeting area is intended for traditional lecture-style lessons, while the other portions encourage students to enjoy
performances, read a book, and explore their senses. With a constructed stage, creekbed, building area, sensory garden and more, students’ love of learning will only grow as this outdoor classroom fosters curiosity and a desire for discovery. To learn more about our programs and projects visit UPWITHTREES.org.
PROJECTS HEAR FROM TREE DOWNTOWN TULSA
MAXINE AND JACK ZARROW FAMILY FOUNDATION SPONSOR:
“I decided to partner with Up With Trees in beautifying downtown because trees are important to our quality of life and to the walkability of downtown. I think the community has a role to play in improving the Downtown Tulsa landscape. Trees add beauty and shade to our Downtown Tulsa landscape, increasing the walkability of downtown. I was most encouraged to engage in the Tree Downtown Tulsa program as a way of helping make our downtown a better place. My dream for our downtown landscape is to have streets lined with big

trees that provide shade along the sidewalks.” To Tree Downtown Tulsa visit UPWITHTREES.org/TDT.

EMERALD ASH BORER WAS DISCOVERED... In Oklahoma two years ago. When it arrives in Tulsa, all ash trees are expected to die as a result of their infestation. Up With Trees is partnering with the City of Tulsa to develop a plan that proactively removes, and replaces ash trees in public spaces. Hi! I’m Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). I’m a green beetle native to eastern Asia and I like to munch on ash trees.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO PREPARE:
300,000+ ASH TREES IN TULSA TO BE REMOVED AND REPLACED
DO YOU HAVE AN ASH TREE? Branch & Bud Arrangement
Leaves
Branches and buds are directly across from each other, not staggered. When identifying your ash, consider buds/limbs may die and not every single branch will have an opposite mate.
Leaves are compound and composed of 5-11 leaflets. Leaflet margins may be smooth or toothed. The only other oppositely branched tree with compound leaves is a boxelder maple, which almost always has 3-5 leaflets.
Seeds
Bark
Young
Mature
On mature trees the bark is tight with a distinct pattern of diamond-shaped ridges. On young trees bark is relatively smooth.
When present on trees, seeds are dry, oar-shaped samaras. They usually occur in clusters and typically hang on the tree until late fall, early winter.
IF YOU HAVE AN ASH TREE, WHAT DO YOU DO? Do you want to save your ash trees from EAB? No

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT-
STEWART SWAYZE
TULSA PUBLIC SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT, DR. DEBORAH GIST,
DISCUSSES TREES ON SCHOOL CAMPUSES “As human beings, we just have a thrill that comes with seeing beautiful things in nature. Trees can impact learning very directly when we as educators incorporate the outdoors and trees into our classrooms. We can write about trees [and] read about trees. We can study trees and understand the science
of trees, which is absolutely fascinating. When we have trees on our campuses it gives us a space for teachers and children to be able to go outside and experience nature. It makes [learning] fun and exciting, and it really sticks with children in a way that’s different from when they learn it on paper”
In Stewart’s time at Up With Trees, he has chaired the Development Committee, volunteered in marketing efforts, and been a member of the Up With Trees board. He is one of the most hard-working and dedicated individuals the staff has had the pleasure of working with, and the organization is changed with each initiative in which Stewart participates. His knowledge, energy, and readiness to share his talents seem unending, and Tulsa’s urban forest will be greener and healthier with him as it’s advocate. “Trees teach us that change is beautiful. Tulsa has experienced tremendous growth since I was a child. However, the one thing that’s remained constant is the mission of Up With Trees: To beautify greater Tulsa by planting trees. I am grateful to be a part of an organization with such a deeply-rooted history in the city that I call home,” shares Stewart. We look forward to continue working with Stewart in growing our organization and community’s resources.
