A NOTE FROM THE URBAN EDGE TEAM Has February gone by quick or what? We can’t believe that it was just the other evening we were popping the corks in New Year’s celebrations, and now where proceeding into March. We also took time out to realise how many kicks we’re reaching out of this year already. Every weekend has been loaded with events and fascinating happenings. One can hardly grumble of boredom in these parts. With the closing stages of February comes the end of the notoriously warm weather that drains the Cape. It also sees the population kick into an unyielding work gear, as the holidays become something of a distant memory. February also saw the departure of two venues that will surely be missed, the famous Paulaner Brauhaus in the V&A Waterfront, and the stylish Fez Club. We saw some outstanding events throughout the month, personal favourites being Ultimate X and Up The Creek. Outdoor music festivals are undoubtedly one of the key attractions of the summer months around Cape Town, and March will treat us to the annual fixture of RAMfest, which is sure to be bigger and better than ever. Capetonians will also once again see the Stormers run out onto the Newlands pitch in the illustrious Super 15 competition.

The future is looking dazzling on the entertainment front for the coming month, and we implore you all to make as most of the beautiful city as possible. March is known as a month of tough graft, and the stress levels require shaking off from time to time. There’s loads of fun to be had, and we’re optimistic that you’ll join us in turning the frowns upside down and gear up for another super duper month.

THE MODERN BEACH-FRONT The futurists would love it, but it’s not for me. The relentless hum of tires on concrete drowns out the crash of the ocean. The florescent tubes above cast too many strange shadows and offer no clue as to the exit. So I follow the markings on the road - dodging shoppers, soccer moms in 4X4’s - clad from neck to ankle in neoprene, surfboard in hand. It’s a surreal sensation, parking underground to go for a surf. On holiday, only a week before going surfing meant a quick walk down to the beach, or a short drive which culminated in a gravel parking area encircled by fynbos. Now there are only buildings, concrete, asphalt and kikuyu, the latter brought in to provide some nature in the wilderness of parquet and paving. Where once there were shifting dunes now monstrosities of steel and glass dominate, looking out upon the once pristine beach and across the bay at the iconic mountain. Once out of the concrete parking cave, I make my way down to the beach, for my first glance of the waves I’ve come to surf. Fretful of where I step though, only stealing brief glances at the ocean, for the beach is littered with stagnant pools of water, spawning frantic algae growth, on a beach rapidly turning a sickly greenish brown. There’s a smell too, an odd blend of
aromas, ranging from the natural, but still unpleasant, decay of kelp on the high-water line. To the unnatural and oddly conflicting wafts of deep fried chicken emanating from the food court. Underlying these is a more sinister odour, just testing your olfactory lobes with its presence. It’s a smell out of place with the ocean and with the mall above, a smell which my brain wants to filter out because it shouldn’t be there. EDGE OPIN ION ADVERTISING: THE JOKE YOU SHOULD KNOW!
A few months ago, Mavericks, the well-known strip club found itself in some hot water over their rather steamy billboards. WORDS ANGELIQUE REDMOND For those of you who have been hiding under a rock, the towering billboards advertised their new fragrance line. With tongue in cheek names such as ‘we were out sailing’ and ‘my car broke down’ under the fragrance name ‘Alibis’. Hellfire and brimstone rained down on the campaign, unleashing all the usual campaigns regarding pornographic images in public and demeaning and objectifying women. The Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA) ruled that they were offensive and had to be removed by the second of December. Amidst the furore of media and public outcry, no one managed to point out to all those bloggers, press and public citizens that they had just done the job of the advertising campaign for Mavericks. Think about it, the more light you shed on the campaign and the billboards, the more people know and talk about it. What did make me chuckle was the very clever response Mavericks provided: the fashion and the fragrance industry are built on the objectification of men and women, scantily clad models in jeans or underwear, in adverts where the sexual overtones are about as subtle as a slap in the face, so why are Mavericks in hot water for a few billboards? Bleat, bleat, women are being exploited and it promotes promiscuity. Hmm let’s think about that, a strip club which puts half naked women on a billboard with a tongue in cheek slogan to promote the STRIP clubs fragrance line. It’s a strip club; women who work there voluntarily take their clothes off for money, that’s right they dance on a pole and maybe your husband to earn a living. So you’re worried about the promotion of promiscuity, well if your husband or boyfriend is willing to cheat on you in the first place surely I am not the only person who wonders how much that one provocative billboard influenced his decision? Then there were the picketers, about thirty of them outside Mavericks, comprising of a few organizations, but there is one I have to mention, The Family Policy Institute, they used all the media attention

to call for stricter legislation regarding the media and the harmful sexual stereotyping of women. So I decided to pay a little visit to their website, and yes there it was, ‘ As we speak homosexual activists are working with the Department of Education to introduce sensitivity training in our schools national curriculum, to indoctrinate our children with the lie that homosexuality is normal and worthy to be pursued as a legitimate alternative sexual lifestyle.’ I am not so sure I want gay bashers defending my rights, and they never did mention what they considered to be harmful sexual stereotyping of women, I shudder to imagine men like this deciding what an appropriate view of women is. And the final joke, all the complaining and the billboards are still there, only now the women have a little more see through lace on and they promote the fragrance for men and WOMEN. Mavericks won the court case, I wonder why?

Since November last year there has been a buzz sweeping through the cyberspace grape-vines regarding the much-anticipated gaming events arranged by three passionate gamers, sportingly calling themselves 2upGamers. Cape Town’s official 2upGamers is the new social gaming movement, which arose practically overnight and strongly aims to grow the local gaming community, with focal points on the ins and outs of gaming entertainment. The 2upGamers trio introduces gamers, gaming retailers, service providers, and even non-gamers to share the very latest in the gaming industry, the latest gaming craze - with coveted prizes and impressive goody bags aptly called swag bags. Friday, 20th November night’s gathering named the 3rd Encounter - the third of its kind succeeded The Second Wave and its debut Inaugural event. Once again filled to capacity at the Friends of Design Academy of Digital Arts, for a second time, in Bree Street, housing nearly 100 online signups besides walk-ins. I had an opportunity to talk to one of the co-founders, Hylton Arendse, to hear how 2upGamers rates its presence in the gaming community and what more we can expect from this initiative.

MAN SURVIVES FOR MONTHS IN SNOWED-IN CAR A Swedish man was recently dug out alive after being snowed in to his car on a forest track for two months with no food. The man from southern Sweden was found mid Feb, emaciated and too weak to speak. He was found not far from the city of Umea in the north of Sweden by snowmobilers who thought they had come across a car wreck until they dug their way to a window and saw movement inside. The man, who was laying in the back seat in a sleeping bag, said he had been in the car since Dec. 19.

Recently, a young male lion attacked a group of safari goers in Fourways, Johannesburg, during an afternoon outing at a Lion Park. The lion jumped into the van, packed with adults and children and only gave up when a woman ranger, punched, pushed and pepper sprayed the lion. The attack started when a lioness flanked the one side of the caged safari van. No one was majorly injured, but it must hve been quite a traumatic event!

UP THE CREEK MUSIC FESTIVAL
Breede River, for a whole weekend, at Up The Creek Music Festival had a build up like none other with blogging, adverts, Twitter, Facebook and word of mouth singing its praises, it was promised to be one of a kind. So everyone has talked about the drive, it wasn’t that bad, 4x4 or in in a lil’ Fiat Palio like us – and don’t get me wrong, it was far and we were moving at an illegal speed, but it’s not like we drove half way to George, oh wait. On arrival Friday night, we were welcomed by a yellow bird and a clown. Random, I know. Friday night saw the likes of aKING & Taxi Violence on the main stage (an epic show by the both of them) & The Great Apes, who were awesome and rocked out on the smaller stage by the bar, wow, insane & crazy is the best way to describe their shows respectively not to mention the count down to my birthday at midnight with us all celebrating into the wee hours of the morning! Saturday was an abrupt wake up by the blistering sun, and a hangover that had me planking on the floor of my tent. Hat, sunglasses and bikini on we set off in search of food, and this festival, they had plenty of it, but with a hangover big enough to take on an 18 wheeler, standing in line was the cruelest thing anyone could have done to me. Peachy Keen played at 2pm-ish on the river stage, this causing what looked like a buffalo stampede of people trying to get good spots in the water. The Peaches, with their blonde locks and swing vibes always impress, Bandon Shore on drums – obviously not Dave Grohl, but I dare say close too in looks (minus the locks) and pure love of drums and the talent this man has. Together with a lil’ help from a few familiar faces – Captain Stu, Ryan McArthur & Jon Shaban were as usual, crazy-awesome! Next up on my list of must see’s was Fox Comet, and of course, these guys are
always a favourite, for the crowd and for photographers to catch the acrobat moves and break dancing styles of Rob Coutts, and crazy METAL faces of Kyle Gray, within finishing their first song, everyone in sight of the main stage was on their feet and jumping around singing along, they too were joined on stage by the Captain Stu guys (who seemed to keep popping up everywhere!) The band being pro-ginger, had their very own ginger and Captain Stu guys sporting “ginger-friendly” Fox Comet t-shirts – I’m still waiting to get my hands on one!

For the remainder of Saturday it was a pretty long party that went on till the early hours of the morning! In all honesty the acts that stood out the most were Hot Water (whose lead singer is, well, interesting in attire) with their jiving back up singer, whose hips don’t lie – Shakira has nothing on this guy! But the band that almost gave me a concussion with the chaos of a crowd as they took the stage and began their set was the KONGOS, limbs flying all over the show, drinks sprayed all over and photographs I hope to high heaven, never see the light of day! This was the Kongos, the band that made Up The Creek for me. Their sexy music that reminded me of a dirty spanish harlem cross jungle rock! It was magical. There were a ton of other bands that were really impressive, including Shadowclub and City Bowl Mizers but as happens at festivals the night got more randy and booze was handy. As a first timer of this festival it was the a total winner. No commercial crap music, no pretentious people blocking my view of the stage, no barbies with hair straightners in the bathrooms, enough shade to hide in when needed, kids under control (besides the little shit who attacked me with his lilo outside my tent on sunday morning) hippies everywhere – I love hippies. Not to mention a wedding. When there is a wedding at a music festival you just know, you’re in the right place. Bacardi and other sponsors – well done! A year of count down to the next one.

1 May 2006, Old Greenpoint Stadium. Fans were treated to a night of epic proportions. Headlining the night was the Dogg-father, flanked by big acts in their respective music genres, such as Sean Paul, Mario and Rihanna, before she was playing on every radio station you tuned into. Snoop might not be the most exciting performer to watch on stage, but when his memorable tracks dropped, such as Whats My Name, the crowd couldn’t contain themselves from nearly turning the atmosphere into something from a Lord of The Rings battle scene. As with many concerts it had it’s bland spots, but to be able to say you saw one of this era’s most iconic West Coast rappers will surely be a story to tell.

All the gansta’s in town really got pumped up for this one. Fiddy and his G-Unit crew made their way south to perform at the tip of Africa for one night only on May 3rd 2008 at the Bellville Velodrome. The hard looking pack were in a decline in billboard ratings and the world was starting to get over the 50 fever. Never-the-less it was a high profile figure visiting our shores, and there were still plenty of fans willing to bob their heads and wear their jeans around their ankles for that gritty night. Certain songs raised the roof, while the majority of the event made for a pretty forgettable concert.
There’s no doubting that Lenny Kravitz has reached a level of legendary status. In the year 2000 Kravitz was still coming off the success of the album “5”, which contained the smash hit Fly Away. Some could argue that the American rocker hasn’t experienced the same popularity since. If so then Cape Town was lucky to have Lenny here 21 March 2000 at the old Greenpoint Stadium. He bought with him the GooGoo Dolls, who were also coming off a high with the track Iris. For lovers of raw instrumental Rock ‘n Roll, nights didn’t get much bigger than this. If you play the guitar, make it a life mission to watch Kravitz perform a guitar solo.

Years had gone by since we were all jamming to The Rockafella Skank and Right Here, Right Now, but when it was announced that Fatboy Slim would be coming to Cape Town to perform at Atmospheer on December 7th 2007 we were all pleasantly surprised, and most decided not to miss out on witnessing Norman Cook (a.k.a. Fatboy Slim) present his epic stage persona that had made him such a hit at live events. Not many of his own songs were played, which is to be expected when watching a DJ play live, but for an electronic act not many people have been able to get a crowd going with their personality, let alone the music.

This band has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and have sold over 150 million albums. Their songs appear in the biggest Hollywood movies and their lead singer is one of the most recognisable figures in the world. Music acts don’t come much bigger than U2. Sure, they haven’t produced a massive hit in a few years, and the majority of the youth prefer to listen to electronic music on a Friday night, instead of sit at home and listen to Bono and the lads on their parents stereo, but if offered a chance to see this group live not many would turn down the opportunity. The arena style stage, and epic visuals made for an emphatic night, but this one misses the number 1 spot purely for the poor quality of the sound.

KINGS OF LEON Before 2011, people would always list a bunch of acts they wished would come to South Africa, and 9 times out of 10 you would hear people say Kings Of Leon. They were first scheduled to play in March of 2011, but problems within the band pushed their date back to 26 October 2011. Like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, people listen to Kings Of Leon purely for their music. There isn’t any gossip that surrounds the band, and they aren’t the type to appear in celebrity magazines which makes them a little mysterious. No one really knew what they would get. But what people got was one of the best live acts to ever touch down in the Cape. The sound was unbelievable, and if you really appreciate Rock music you would agree that they set a bar for rock acts following in their wake. There was some criticism that they didn’t interact with the crowd enough, but we went there for music, not a Robbie Williams concert. 24 February 2012 - 29 March 2012

Christmas having come and gone, I’m not going to lie to you – those bad food cravings didn’t. They’re still here, and it doesn’t help going back to a fast paced career that demands some sort of obsession – mine just happens to be food. I assumed, as many before me, that if I just cut down on certain foods and adopted a good diet, I just might shed these Christmas hips I’ve forced myself to love. But the constant reminder from my partner, and the denial that to lose weight I’d need to tone up, sent me off to Adventure BootCamp. Armed with 2 pink dumbbells and a yoga mat, I went off in search of a new and improved me – but just found my inner need for a routine. Adventure Bootcamp is a great place – minus the stereotypical drill sergeant so many people believe go

with the word ‘Bootcamp’. My trainers provided the friendliest environment and the most personal experience. The ladies (yes no men allowed!) were all like a family, some having attended a camp before, and it was a great way to meet new people, and network – but it was also, most importantly, my escape. For one hour a day I could escape into nothingness – and I realised how important it is to have a routine, and an escape. I’m not going to say this was easy – or this is the only way forward, being healthy and fit is something you have to work hard at – all the time! This just provides a great environment and makes it a little easier! Plus there are plenty perks: giveaways, competitions, and weekend activites: surfing, hiking, yoga/ pilates! Give it a try! 3 or 5 days a week for an hour a day – best thing I did!

A festival of merriment, dancing and grapes set against the back-drop of the Tulbagh mountains. The Harvest, an outdoor festival, starts at 5am on Saturday morning, with Harvesting guests arriving the evening before. Grape picking, squashing by foot and pressing happens during the day, followed by sweet tunes of local artists into the night and the Baccanalia ball on Saturday evening. Sunday the music continues, and a local produce market for locals and revelers takes place under the dappled leaves of the poplar trees. Bands and Dj’s will play into the evening, and Guests are encouraged to leave on Monday morning.

South Africa’s most popular group, The Parlotones, take the stage at the magnificent Kirstenbosch venue. This special Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon Concert is a fundraiser for the upcoming Kirstenbosch Centenary in 2013 and promises to be a concert ending the summer season on a high note. Hard to believe that Kirstenbosch started as a derelict farm once owned by Cecil John Rhodes more than one hundred years ago. It was proclaimed a national garden in 1913 and then the work began to create the magnificent garden we know today from the rubble. Today Kirstenbosch is a world renowned Botanical Garden, much loved by local and international visitors. The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon Concert aims to raise funds for this much anticipated and iconic year and with an extra half an hour of great music, the audience will be getting great value for money! Foto na Dans graced the stage at Kirstenbosch for their very last performance on the 5th of February. Flash Republic joined them on stage on one of the hottest days of this summer. Foto na Dans ended their career off on a spectacular note. Each band member played the set with smiles from ear to ear knowing that they had achieved amazing things as a band, had made a huge impact on the music scene in South Africa and that the time had come for the musically and lyrically talent five piece to end on a high note. It was hard to believe that I would be singing along to ‘Vergeet Van My’ and ‘Soldaatvolk’ for the last time or at least till their fans demand a reunion tour. However, Flash Republic was far from outshone at Kirstenbosch. Tamara Dey and her band gave an energetic performance and had a huge crowd of all ages dancing up a storm in front of the stage. The most surprising thing about Flash Republic’s performance was how many songs, such as Twister and Star, were recognizable from radio play which is a great testament to how well the band is currently doing in the South African music scene. Fans queued just to get a picture with Tamara Dey long after the show was done. The highlight of the evening was, without question, the collaboration between Foto na Dans and Flash Republic (Dans Republic) called ‘Afrikaans’. Most of the crowd stood up, sang along to the catchy song and bid farewell to Foto na Dans. I couldn’t think of a better send off for such a groundbreaking band.

The launch of Dan Platlansky’s JAN album, ’20 Stone’ at Kirstenbosch Gardens on the 22nd of January was a star studded show. The talented Natasha Meister, who is the first South African woman to be endorsed by Fender, warmed the crowd up with her warm bluesy vocals. She performed some original songs from her first album, ‘Halfway’. Dan Platlansky was up next and, although high expectations had been set by his performance at Kirstenbosch last year, the crowd was still blown away. Whereas seeing some guitarists play inspires people to pick up a guitar and give it a go, watching Dan play leaves one so awe-struck that it feels futile to even try! Natasha Meister joined Dan on guitar for one of his songs, but the highlight of the afternoon was when Ross Learmonth of Prime Circle and Theo Crous of Springbok Nude Girls added their vocals and guitar respectively to the title track off Dan’s new album, ’20 Stones’. The energy on stage was palpable as each musician showed off their unbelievable talent as individuals and their ability to create an astounding product as a group. I would definitely advise any lover of blues or even good old rock ‘n roll to get their hands on Dan Platlansky’s album ’20 Stones’ and catch him live. A mind blowing experience is

South Africa is loaded with brands which carry the tag of extreme sportswear and accessories, only SA seems to lack high profile events, such as the X-Games in the States and Asia. The brands are dying for events such as Ultimate X, where they can showcase all their latest gear in their natural habitat. Ultimate X does a more that satisfactory job at providing that platform.

An oldie but goldie, if you have not yet read this book then you must have built a bunker for the end of the world and been in there since Harold Camping predicted we were all going to die. Trovato takes humour to a whole new level in this novel, the initial introduction points out that if you Google the word sex and then survival, survival had far more results. And so it goes, no race, religion or stereotype is safe as Trovato treats them all to his satirical treatment while still managing to impart actual advice. So if you are religious, offended by stereotypes or just plain sensitive, do not read this book, not only will you not appreciate it, you will probably have a massive coronary from the resulting tide of self – righteous anger. If however you can take a joke, enjoy a good laugh and realize that we’re all in it together, then this book will have a special spot on your bedside table. Filled with survival tips from South Africa’s crime encyclopaedia to childbirth and alien invasions, this is the book you want to read, whether you are fleeing for your life or wish to start a life of crime.

The beautifully deceptive cover of ‘In You Go’ led me to believe that I was about to listen to the latest indie band but the images by Jonx Pillemer encase seven gripping electro tracks. It’s essential to listen to this album either in a car with the bass on high or on some crazy good headphones. After doing so myself I found that the songs were growing on me even though I’m not a huge electro fan. ‘Let the Spice Flow’ is definitely the catchiest track on the album and I found myself the tracks melody stuck in my head for days. It has an almost hip hop feel minus the rapping, which is not missed. The last track on the album, ‘Pleasures’, sounds like it belongs on the soundtrack of an epic movie about computer hackers or something else technological like Tron. The album was mixed by Card on Spokes as well as two of Cape Town’s favourite electro DJs , Sibot and Dank. So if these names are familiar to you I would definitely advise you to listen to this album. If not, listen to it with an open mind and you just might like it. I know I do!
EL CAMINO
A few years ago no one had even heard of Dan Auerbach or Patrick Carney, their first single was released in 2002, the single was a wobbly toddler still learning to stand and as such passed without too much comment. From 2002 to 2010, the somewhat hairy dishevelled rockers continued to hone their craft and in 2012 released Brothers, this cd was akin to a rebellious teenager, it demanded to be heard, and heard it was, winning three Grammys and selling nearly a million copies. The Black Keys had arrived. So what about their latest offering, El Camino? It’s the buff 20 something year old guy who seduced me with a look. The lyrics are fun, the music makes you nostalgic for the days of dancing with your hairbrush in your hand, and there is not one track on the cd that doesn’t deliver. The first track which recently featured on The Vampire Diaries, Lonely Boy, is the highlight of a CD packed with tracks that will make you and you i-pod smile, dance and jiggle along to the catchy songs, energetic guitar playing and more unconventional instruments.

During one of the many afternoons we ventured towards the nearby wise mountain so we could hike and he could skate. This was captured as we descended the imperious mountain side, where he sought a bench and I captured (what is to me) the essence of his being. RT A E EDG ILE F PRO ARTIST PROFILE: NARD STAR IMAGES DAVID J WILLIAMS / ANOTHER SHOOTING PHOTOGRAPHY Nard Star is a graffiti artist and freelance designer who studied graphic design (with a print major) at Cape Technikon. A really interesting and talented artist, Urban Edge sat down with Nard and chatted about her projects, the street art bylaw in Cape Town and how you should start your graffiti art passion! How did you get involved with graffiti art? Well, I studied graphic design but I started messing around with graffiti before that. When I was about 18 years old. When I was a teenager, I was always hanging out on the streets with my friends and we were very much into hip hop. So I had friends that were BBoys and MC’s and we just decided to try out graffiti. We’d be out late at night. You have to teach yourself, if there were graffiti workshops, all you could teach is can control, which people actually have to teach themselves.
that is split over at least 3 walls – or 3-7 walls, but each mural on its own has to be understandable – it mustn’t look like part of a mural, and then we piece it all together (with photographs).
Where did Nard Star come from? Because that’s not your birthname? It’s a nickname. When I was a teenager, people used to call me Noddy... but the letters are really weird and it doesn’t look cool, so it became Nard Star. It’s like our graffiti names and surname – but nobody really paints their full nickname.
When you want to do projects in Cape Town, how easy is it to get permission? Well, the Bylaw is quite annoying – Cape Town is the only city that has one this strict in South Africa... how the bylaw works is, you get forms and you have to fill in all your details as an artist – where you stay, phone numbers etc, and then get the owner of the property (where the street art will be placed) to fill in forms, get the neighbours to fill in the forms to prove they approve, you have to take a photo of the wall, do a sketch of the artwork, and then send it in to the government and they have a look. The waiting period is two weeks. Now a lot of people are resisting going through the government for permission. The bylaw (can be) very misguided – because it’s almost as if they’re trying to clamp down on vandalism, but the street laws are being enforced on artists who are trying to do art works.
What inspires you to be a graffiti artist? What do you love so much about doing graffiti work? I’ve done a lot of forms of art. Well, I studied graphic design, so I’ve done print – I like doing screen print, I like other forms of painting, charcoal drawings is also a favourite, but graffiti art is something I’ve admired since I was young! And it was the only thing I couldn’t figure out – how the hell it works? I just used to stare at people painting it (graffiti). I would look at these murals and I just couldn’t understand how they got that right with spray cans, so I fell in love with it – and it was a challenge for myself. And I’m still learning how to use cans! Can you tell me more about the Split-piece projects? Split-piece is a concept that Falko created. I paint with him most of the time. He created this concept – a split-piece is a mural
And the ‘Darling Made Me Do It’ Project? We went to Darling, we chose a road, and we just painted the whole road – the fronts and backs of houses and split pieces all jumble up and we joined the photos and had an online exhibition. We worked with the Darling Trust, so it was legal.
What projects have you got in the pipeline – what’s coming up for Nard Star? In April we are doing (a new project) – Once Upon A Time, which will be the same as Darling. We’re going to Pella and Malmsbury, because it’s easier to get permission in a small town – and its outside of the bylaw. We’re going for 16 days, leaving on the 26th April, so Rusty is coming from Joburg (he’s one of the few people who do graffiti professionally). 16 days, 2 roads! (Exciting stuff!!)
What would you say to readers who want to get involved in graffiti as an art form? Find a place to practice – in your yard or a piece of wall. Start with sketches, practice your can control: two straight lines, two diagonal lines, do circles, do squares – its all about the can control and your sketching – and don’t disrespect other artists, there’s enough walls for everyone!

This Durban based band is a mixture of indie, punk and electro. With an energetic beat and pulsating bassline and bouncing lyrics, if you haven’t heard of them yet, what country have you been hiding in?

WORDS ANGELIQUE REDMOND They started playing in 2007 and where then called The Otherwise, they changed the name of the band after it was brought to their attention that another band in The States had the same name, so for obvious reasons they needed a knew name and after a few (many) drinks at a party singer and frontman Greg Allan made a joke about the name The Anti Retro Vinyls being a cool name for the band and the rest was history. The Band is made up of two sets of brothers, Greg Allan on vocals, Harry Allan on guitar, Chris van Renen on drums, and Carl Van Renen. One can only imagine the dynamic when you have two sets of brothers making up the band, if they are anything like my siblings it may make cage wrestling look tame. I asked Carl what is was like, “ When there are disagreements they tend to get pretty insane, because no one holds back, there is complete honesty that you get only from siblings. “ Having evolved from a very raw funk/ punk band, the influences of bands such as The White Stripes saw the evolution move to a more indie sound. With current influences like Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, The Libertines and The Ramones their sound has a distinct flavour to it, creative and a little bit dirty. One look at the lead vocalist Greg is enough to be transported right back to the height of dirty rock and roll and punk era, his disheveled and slightly grungy appearance is the very epitome of rock and roll and with a voice that could make lesser mortals cry in pleasure, the mixture is one that is pleasing to all the senses: sight, sound and I am sure,
touch. Live they are a fun and energetic band to watch, with catchy and tongue in cheek lyrics, they have as much fun playing their music as the fans do listening to it. So where is this band of brothers going? They are currently recording an acoustic EP as well as their second full length album, with plans to make more music videos after the success of ‘ Can I Kiss You’. There are also plans to tour more extensively, and even possibly a national tour later in the year - so great news if you don’t live in Durban, hopefully this year will see The Anti Retro Vinyls in Cape Town. And when the band aren’t making music, they can be found organizing events, playing poker and filling in online surveys. And as for pre-gig rituals, “ We are quite fond of drinking, pre-gig, during gig and after gig, backstage and onstage. And just a heads up for the fans the one thing you don’t know about the band? “ We love it when they approach us, and buy us drinks.” So it is really sex, drugs and rock and roll? Guess you’ll have to go watch them and find out.

Chasing Migada Productions produced their first feature film, “Casting Me…”, in 2011, featuring Paul Snodgrass. Inspired and motivated by this accomplishment, Producer and Director of Photography Darren Wertheim and Director Quinton Lavery approached the Afrikaans punk rock band Van Coke Kartel, offering to shoot a music video for their upcoming single “Dis ‘n Land”. Van Coke Kartel’s intrigue was met with the sole requirement and brief that it should be “funny and entertaining”. Darren and Quinton in their typical thorough and creative fashion subsequently came up with a rather elaborate concept detailing the various themes and corresponding visuals mentioned the narrative of the song, however, due to budgetary constraints, the scope of the original concept could not be materialised. Chasing Migada Productions went back to the drawing board, giving birth to the very concept that ultimately translated into the video that was released on the 23rd of January, 2012. The concept still being greater than the budget at hand meant that everyone had to put their socks a little higher than what was originally expected - including the band members themselves who showed extraordinary faith in Darren and Quinton’s vision and a will to cooperate with the decisions and directions of Chasing Migada Productions. The band’s dependability and consistent performance effectively made it possible to bring such an original performance video to life.

Jack Parow, the infamous, famous, funny, swearing, drinking, not-so-loved but still-followed on Twitter, Facebook and any other social media platform you can think of - Jack Parow; had a braai on Valentine’s day, a Tuesday - midday, outside Melissa’s Café in Kloof Street Cape Town, on the side walk in broad daylight nogal. All of this was to promote his new Braaisouse. Which I’ll have you know – makes a flipping tasty tjop! Now normally, this would be an odd occasion in the middle of the week, outside a café and opposite a high school, on a pavement, but who’s kidding who here, its blady Jack Parow. Nothing is odd when it comes to this guy. I arrived slightly late, holding up my reputation for fashionably late entrances, to a warm welcome by all that had already got their drink on, and had already had Jack Parow himself braai-ing for them all. He had his tongs in hand, meat well marinated and they had saved me some! There was a Jack Parow poster donned on the Café’s front window, and a “Howzit” from the man himself. Mr. Parow, or to those who actually know him as Xander, was ever so “chilled out” and happy to sign autographs of the brave kids that had snuck out of school, run down the road and came to set eyes upon a local celeb. The purpose of setting up braai on the sidewalk of Kloof Street in the middle of the day, well, there wasn’t one. It’s just
the start of his campaign to get his braaisouse out into the market and to reach as many people as possible, and in true Jack Parow style, be different, and not give a crap about who has an opinion on how or where he does this. The small event wasn’t advertised, it was a real ‘pull in if you’re in the area vibe’. In all honesty I have never been the biggest fan of the artist himself, for the obvious reasons of his music, his attitude I had encountered on a previous occasion and well, because I probably had the same opinion many have before actually meeting the fellow, but now, I got to admit, Hosh Tokolosh has gradually made me a fan, his keenness and hospitality to pose for pictures, sign autographs and the fact that he made an effort to chat to all at this impromptu street braai has revealed a slightly different side to the persona he has for public – in order to sell his “Parowphernalia”, he’s a rad guy. But I’m not one to try convince you or push my opinion onto others, get hold of his new album, or go check out his next gig, rumoured to be in march in JHB or a little later on back in Cape Town – see for yourself. Urban Edge Mag caught up with Bismarck Du Plessis recently on set of the upcoming Castle Lager Commercial - which brought together the likes of a few big names in the SA Sports industry. WORDS URBAN EDGE MAG How do you enjoy getting behind the camera as an actor? Well I can tell you that you also get injured. Ja, tell us what happened out there? I stumped my toe and got a bloody foot. On the acting side it’s a little different, but part of what sportsmen do. I don’t personally enjoy it and would rather be playing rugby, but you have to do this stuff from time to time. It looks like you guys are having a bit of a laugh on set. Who’s the joker in the group? JP (Pietersen) is definitely the joker. I think he should be the lead role in a few acting gigs, and he’s also studied drama so he’s definitely the best at this out of all these guys. (JP looks over and shakes his head) So the Sharks are now in the build up phase to the season. Is it getting intense? The last 2 – 3 weeks we’ve gotten into a little more technical detail, as opposed to the first 8 – 10 weeks which focuses more on the fitness aspect. So right now we’re easing up on the fitness and getting into the technicalities in our team play.
It looks like you’re the first pick in the no.2 position now. Well I hope so. I’ll be playing hooker, but there’s great players in other teams in South Africa in the same position, so you can never count your chickens before they hatch. I also think it’s good to have competition in your position because it brings out the best in your game. So I’m looking forward to playing, and if I’m needed in the position I’ll definitely take the opportunity.
Heyneke Meyer. Good choice for the Springbok coach? I think Heyneke’s pedigree speaks for itself. What he did with the Bulls and all the titles he took them to is just phenomenal. He’s a very successful coach and if I have the chance to work with him it will be a great privilege. Quite a few Bok veterans going out, obviously a few young guys coming in. What do you think the future of SA rugby looks like? I guess there are a few guys that have gone, but like Stefan Terblanche used to say ‘you’re only keeping that jersey warm for as long as you’re good enough’, and the guys who left are greats of the game. So the guys who are coming in will only be great talents. I guess we’ll see a lot of different faces in provincial teams, but I believe that players who come in always carry the expectations of being bigger, better and stronger.
Would you say it’ll be the usual suspects going for the Super 15 crown this season? I think if you look at the beginning of last season you wouldn’t have said the Reds would have been a contender, because a little more than two years ago they were at the bottom of the log. ROCKIN ROLLA SURF DAY A few years ago, 2006 to be specific – if records serve me right, two guys came up with a concept like no other, a Retro Surf day, not a competition as most know it – everyone that surfs gets a prize, but rather a day of fun, sun, sea, booze, boere rolls, bikinis and retro surfboards. At the Vudu Surf corner there was a stand for an organization called Indosole, as well as merchandise from F*It clothing, Indosole is still very new to South Africa as it is from Indonesia, and F*It clothing (pronounced fit) clothing are new in general, and the brain child of cape town resident Nadine Classen. The idea is to bring back the Retro vibes onto the beach, Llundudno beach, along with the help of the club house for utilities such as bar, braai and lifeguards – they’re always handy to have around. For every heat the surfers are to make use of Vudu’s retro boards, donning the most outrageous retro costumes (provided you have) and just have fun and show support. Shark spotting aside, which took surfers out the water for about 30 minutes, there was a dog surfer, who was adament he was a champ – jumping on any and all bodyboards, surfboards or childrens back his little legs could get him onto, there were wigs, colourful wetsuits as lifeguards putting on quite a show trying to get their rubber duck past the break. The competition is held every year now due to its great success and is open to everyone from groms through to professionals, With the like of one of South Africa’s top surfers Jordy Smith gracing the waves for us. The event was a lot of fun and the weather was superb! It was a day made for surfing.
