HOWZIT
We were amazed to comprehend that Cape Town lacks a popular community magazine, free to the pretty people, updating them on all the local endeavours undertaken by Table Mountain subordinates. For those of us who grew up in the region we remain relentlessly reminded that we reside in an unbelievably beautiful and eventful location of the country, which brings fellow compatriots from differing area codes down to the Isthmus which is Cape Town. Internationals are also fundamentally taken with our swag Peninsula, meaning an inquisitive spotlight is focused right upon us on a global level.
So with this constant influx of curious beings to the Cape of Good Hope, a need for information is still a requisite and that’s we’re all about, giving you the information by bringing people together and collaborating wherever possible. We go into this adventure a diminutive team, ambitious but also aware we possess an entire city exploding with creative minds, ever willing to send in any rosy creations in
order to promote their talents or just communicate through facinating visuals. So in essence Urban Edge Magazine is not the bleatings of a couple of individuals (although we are required to coordinate and edit respectively), but rather representative of an amazing metropolis which offers a far more extensive content source than a fair few. As with any debutant outfit we have goals we’d like to fulfill, but none remain more important than that of captivation and escapism among Edge readers. Your needs top the check list and it’ll proceed that way for, hopefully, an era to come. So there you have it. Every three weeks, piercing your retinas. This issue we focus on Heritage Month and we celebrate local talent - photographers, filmmakers, designers, musicians and artists. It’s all an awesome read, and wouldn’t have been possible without our collaborators. Next issue we’re getting into the horror and festivities giving you recipes of Halloween treats and info on where you should be partying! Enjoy the read...

PILOT STREET NUMBER SIGNAGE PROGRAM The Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID) and the City of Cape Town have joined forces to test a new street signage system in the city centre. The pilot project sees the addition of a street number range on the street signs of some of the city’s longer and busier roads to assist people in knowing whether they should turn left or right to reach their destination. The new street signs are situated on both sides of the street and at all four corners of an intersection. The relevant street numbers are situated on either side of the name of the road. Says CCID’s COO Tasso Evangelinos, “Because the city has many heritage buildings of differing shapes and sizes, the numbering often does not correlate between one side of the road and the other and this can sometimes be confusing. Buildings in the number 120s may well sit opposite buildings in the number 160s”. This simple, yet creative, upgrade of street signage, “will help the city be more navigable” says Johan de Beer, Cape Town’s District Road’s Engineer. Authorities want the city to be liveable, and the City and CCID together hope that these improvements will enable Cape Town to move closer to becoming the most navigable city in the country, both by vehicle and on foot.
What does Cape Town say? “People aren’t sure where to go,” retailer Arslan Shah of the Royal Collection (corner of Bree and Riebeeck) says. “It doesn’t help that many buildings show no numbers and people get lost, wondering up and down the road unsure where to go. I need to have stock delivered on time – if it isn’t available to be bought the sale isn’t made, it’s as simple as that. And this will help the delivery guys – who get lost all the time – to find me.” While the conversion of many of the city’s roads to a oneway system that will let traffic progress faster, it makes it tricky for motorists to turn around if they suspect they’ve gone off track, retailer Donald Golombick says. “By the time you realise you’ve taken a wrong turn you have to first find a place where you can turn around and it takes a while to find your way back on route – especially if you, like me, are from Jo’burg.” “I’m a born and bred proud Capetonian and have no problems getting into the street I need to be in but knowing which way the numbers run is almost impossible. This initiative should sort that out,” says Gareth O’Brien, a legal practitioner based in Bree Street.
The roads authority is piloting the project on three busy spots in the city – where Bree Street intersects with Wale, Strand and Riebeeck Street. “The project will be open to receive comments for the next three months, we then hope to roll it out across the city’s CBD within 12 months after that, obviously budget dependent – starting at heavy traffic spots,” De Beer says. The project is expected to cost up to R1-million over a few years. “Often businesses have to give directions along with their address within the CBD or risk their clients getting lost,” says Evangelinos. More often than not the building numbers of businesses or retailers aren’t displayed prominently enough. In an urban environment where time is money, navigating the city quickly aids punctuality – and the chances of an almost-late interviewee on getting the job. “There are obvious benefits to this project – besides saving people time and money, it also saves the city from a greater carbon footprint as motorists don’t circle the city ad nauseam but drive more directly to their destination,” says De Beer.
How do you find navigating Cape Town? Will this project help you? Send your comment to info@capetowncid.co.za

GEOCACHING
Geocaching is the latest treasure hunting game to hit Capetonians. This worldwide underground subculture enables a geocacher to locate a geocache anywhere in the world with the help of a GPS or GPS-enabled mobile device and GPS coordinates that are listed online. It’s one of the world’s fastest growing live, recreational social media activities. The word Geocaching refers to GEO for geography, and to CACHING, the process of hiding a cache. A cache (in computer terms) is information usually stored in memory to make it faster to retrieve, but the term is also used in hiking/ camping, as a hiding place for concealing and preserving provisions.
More than 4 million people geocache in nearly every country on Earth. They are families with children, retired individuals, students, hikers, explorers, and adventurers. Geocaching appeals to such a diverse range of people because it’s adaptable, depending on what sort of adventure a participant is seeking. In its simplest form, a cache always contains a logbook or log sheet. The logbook contains information from the owner of the cache and notes from visitors. When geocachers return from an adventure, they can log their finds on an online cache page, creating a dynamic community and social network.
Larger geocaches may also contain any number of more or less valuable items. These items turn the cache into a true treasure hunt. A geocacher never knows what the owner or other visitors of the cache may have left there to enjoy. Quite often, geocachers may also find a Trackable. The most common types of Groundspeak Trackables are Travel Bugs® and Geocoins. A Groundspeak Travel Bug is a trackable tag that attaches to an item, and which geocachers move from geocache to geocache. Each tag is etched with a unique code, which the finder can use to log its travels on the website. Geocoins are trackable coins created by geocachers to commemorate special events, or as a signature item to leave in geocaches. They function like Travel Bugs, and should be moved from cache to cache unless otherwise specified by their owners. Urban Edge Magazine

People of all ages seek caches, so geocachers should think carefully before placing an item into a cache. Explosives, ammunition, knives, drugs and alcohol should never be placed in a cache, and everyone should respect the local laws. Food items are always a bad idea. Animals have better noses than humans, and in some cases, caches have been chewed through and destroyed because of food items or other scented items in a cache. It is common for geocachers to hide caches in locations of great natural beauty or personal importance. Geocache locations can be quite diverse – from beaches to mountaintops to urban areas. Before heading out on an adventure, geocachers should make sure to read the cache descriptions carefully, especially the difficulty and terrain ratings, as some cache finds can be technical and physically challenging. For example, a geocache may be located on the side of a cliff and require rock climbing equipment, or may be underwater and accessible only by SCUBA. Geocaches located in cities are often incredibly small, so that people walking by don’t notice them. The cache page helps geocachers understand any special equipment or skills they might need to find a geocache and will often specify the cache size.

The rules of Geocaching are as follows: If you take something from the cache, leave something of equal or greater value; Write about your find in the cache logbook; and Log your experience at www.geocaching.com
8
Geocachers should not move a cache from its original location. If a geocacher feels that the cache is not located in the correct location, he can e-mail the cache owner directly or post a log on the cache detail page, notifying the owner of the concern. It’s the owner’s responsibility to maintain cache placement. We rely on the geocaching community to abide by the geocaching guidelines, to ensure that permission for cache placement has been sought, to provide accurate coordinates, and to keep the contents appropriate for a family friendly audience. If someone finds a problematic cache, they can either contact the owner directly or contact Geocaching.com.
TRENDS There are numerous types of Geocache: Traditional Cache This is the original cache type consisting, at a minimum, a container and a logbook. Normally you’ll find a tupperware container or ammo box filled with goodies, or a smaller container (“micro cache”) that contains only a logsheet. The coordinates listed on the traditional cache page are the exact location for the cache. Multi-Cache A multi-cache (“multiple”) involves two or more locations, the final location being a physical container. There are many variations, but most multi-caches have a hint at the first location that helps one reach the second location, where there is a hint to the third, and so on. Mystery or Puzzle Caches The “catch-all” of cache types, this form of cache can involve complicated puzzles geocachers will first need to solve to determine the coordinates. Due to the increasing creativity of geocaching, this becomes the staging ground for new and unique challenges. Event Cache Occasionally, local geocachers and geocaching organisations designate a time and location to meet and discuss geocaching. After the event, the caches are archived. A Mega-Event cache must be attended by more than 500 people. Typically, Mega-Events are annual events and attract geocachers from all over the world.
Project A.P.E. Cache In 2001, fourteen geocaches were placed in conjunction with 20th Century Fox to support the movie Planet of the Apes. Each cache represented a fictional story in which scientists revealed an Alternative Primate Evolution. These caches were made using specially marked ammo containers. Each cache had an original prop from the movie. Only a few Project A.P.E. caches exist today. Letterbox Hybrid A letterbox is another form of treasure hunting using clues instead of coordinates. Join the Geocaching Society today, and embrace you inner pirate. Don’t be a muggle anymore, join the Geocaching revolution. Check out www.geocaching.com for the latest coordinates or caches in Cape Town, or download the Geocaching App.

Cache In Trash Out Event While on a cache hunt, geocachers collect litter along the trails and properly dispose of it. Cache In Trash Out events are much larger clean-up events that involve and benefit the larger community.
GPS Adventures Maze Exhibit A GPS Adventures Exhibit Cache represents attendance at the GPS Adventures Maze Exhibit or a regional variation of this Exhibit. GPS Adventures Mazes are designed to teach people of all ages about GPS technology and geocaching through interactive science experiences.

BATMAN-ING IS THE NEW PLANKING
I’m sure you’ve heard of Planking - The internet craze that hit the world a few months ago! For those of you who have no clue what this new phenomenon is – it’s pretty absurd! According to PSKF (A trends and innovation company), the rules for planking is you must lie face down, palms flat against your sides, with your feet together and pointing at the floor. Points are awarded for an original location and for the number of spectators and participants involved. You must, of course, have somebody take a photo. Without a photo, you’re just a person lying down. This is planking, described as a
global participatory art project, the lazy man’s free-running, a “pointless internet craze”, the new flash-mobbing and, in the words of one incensed online commenter, “a sick, pagan pastime”. Now, a certain group of guys, who call themselves the Batman Boilers, decided to step it up a gear by introducing batman-ing – suspending upside down in an interesting location. This latest position craze was inspired by the nocturnal mammal who inspired the superhero. Check out the Facebook pages for Planking and Batman-ing – it’s always a good laugh!

THE BLOODHOUND PROJECT
The Bloodhound SSC by Tony Gilbert
After scientific research these blokes decided that the Hakskeen Pan in the Northern Cape would be the best place to conduct their sensational attempt. Apparently finding a location to drive a car at 1690km/h isn’t the easiest of tasks, mostly because a project like this is fairly large and requires a team consisting of many people, and the area to run the car needs to be the exact surface with the perfect length and width. At first the team looked towards the Verneuk Pan in the same province, but later findings revealed the shale bed of the Pan is starting to crumble – not ideal to be travelling at supersonic speeds on. They then settled for the Hakskeen Pan, which allows for the 18km length and 1.5km width needed for the project.

If you’ve ever been out to the Northern Cape then you’ll agree that not much goes on there. Sure, it gives you a feeling of freedom and peace as there isn’t so much as a windmill for miles in each direction, but if given a choice one would probably choose partaking in activities closer to an urban environment. But wait, there’s something upon the horizon that might make you change your mind. It comes in the form of The Bloodhound Project, a genius, and completely bonkers, group of scientists and mechanics from Great Britain who are attempting to break the land speed record by bolting at over 1050mph using their new jet engine car The Bloodhound SSC. That’s 1690km/h for us who use the metric system.
So the location is set, but a natural desert surface needs to be cleared of any debris and stones before the Bloodhound SSC can set off on its run. That’s why the team are calling on volunteers to travel to the Hakskeen Pan and clear the surface of any unwanted obstacles. A team of 300 people already exists although the Bloodhound boys still feel further assistance is needed. Unfortunately there is no pay involved, but the incentive is to help inspire scientists of tomorrow and be part of a truly remarkable feat should it be achieved. Unfortunately a date for this event cannot be confirmed, as a project of this magnitude is extremely unpredictable in terms of a time line. The final assembly of the Bloodhound SSC should be completed nearing the end of 2012, with high speed runs being aimed for early 2013.
The Bloodhound SSC is said to be an unbelievable piece of machinery, containing jet engine power to the equivalent of 180 Formula 1 cars, and traveling faster than a bullet from a .357 Magnum hand gun. Volunteering just to be there to see this beast in action might be well worth it. So if you’ve got the time and interest then head out to the Northern Cape. Visit www.bloodhoundssc.com/desertvolunteers.cfm to see how you could be a part of the team.

OUR TOP TEN:
SOUTH AFRICANS
Being Heritage Month and all we thought we’d count down a few South Africans who’ve made some weighty contributions to our beautiful country through their fantastic accomplishments. The list isn’t official or anything (with the exception of number 1) and we’ve tried to add people from different eras and career paths to broaden the spectrum. So here you are, Urban Edge’s 10 South Africans selected for their lekker achievements. 10. J.R.R. Tolkien Not many people know but J.R.R. Tolkien (John Ronald Reuel Tolkien) was born in Bloemfontein, where his father worked for the British Bank. Tolkien’s time in SA was short lived as his family moved to England at the age of 3. Tolkien said the only story he could tell about his time in South Africa was getting bitten by a baboon spider, which analysts believed was the reason for his use of monstrous eight legged creatures in his novels. He claimed he had no memory of the event and denied the spider link to his childhood. The great author went on to write some of the most famous novels in history, one which set the premise for a billion dollar film franchise The Lord of the Rings, and now The Hobbit is set to be made into a motion picture, again headed by Peter Jackson. Tolkien was one of South Africa’s great creative minds. 9. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi Although Gandhi was not born in South Africa he spent a large majority of his life here, and became a political activist as he sought to create equal rights for Indians in South Africa. He initially came to South Africa to work for an Indian company in Natal on a one year contract, but extended his stay to help fight for Indian rights in South Africa and developed the system of satyagraha, a nonviolent form of protesting. After Indians suffered copious amounts of abuse for several years, employing this tactic the government was eventually forced to negotiate with Gandhi following strong criticism for harsh treatment of peaceful Indians. Gandhi promoted this method of peace wherever he could and created ideals in South Africa that are still used to this day.
8. Jan Smuts Smuts’ reputation continues to be tainted by his early belief that racial segregation was essential to South Africa, a policy he went back on during his final year of South African leadership and declared all racial segregation abolished as it was non-practical. This stance was strongly opposed by the National Party who insisted on continued segregation. The NP eventually won power from Smuts and went on to boost Apartheid into the terrible era it became. Smuts was known as an incredibly clever man, who Einstein once claimed to be the only other being he knew to be on the same intellectual level as himself. Smuts was Prime Minister of South Africa between the years of 1919 – 1924 and then again from 1939 – 1948. He fought in both World Wars on the side of the allies and never left his troops, even when on the front lines. His greatest accomplishment could possibly have been the architecture and formation of The League of Nations, and later the formation of the United Nations (UN) which still works till this day to fight for peace and human rights. 7. Charlize Theron After the accomplishments of the last person on this list an actress might seem a bit irrelevant, but none-the-less Charlize Theron makes our list for making South Africa proud, upon her win at the Academy Awards for Best Actress in a leading role for her performance in Monster. Hailing from the Johannesburg suburb of Benoni, Charlize left school and traveled overseas to Milan on a one year modeling contract, and later ended up in New York plying her trade in Ballet dancing. After a knee injury busted any chances of a career in Ballet she traveled to Los Angeles to observe the Tinseltown scene. Obviously low on money her mother would send her cheques from back home. One day, while trying to cash a cheque, the bank teller refused the transaction, resulting in Charlize throwing a fuss which caught the attention of a talent agent. This tirade got her one foot in the acting door, and later landed her a role in Children of the corn III. The rest is history and today Charlize stands out in Hollywood as an ‘A-list’ mega star who continues to make high quality movies and makes her country proud. 6. Gary Player
‘The Black Knight’ remains to this day a true legend of the game of golf. Throughout his career he won 9 Majors and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. After his career as a golfer he went on to become a highly sort after golf course architect, having been involved in over 300 golf course projects globally. He is known as a fantastic guy and always willing to give tips to youngsters that cross his path. Player’s organization “The Player Foundation” founded the Blair Atholl School in 1983 which continues till this day educating children. He has hosted countless charity golf events to raise money for the underprivileged and has never let his wealth or fame go to his head. A true gem of South Africa.

5. Oliver Reginald Thambo
Throughout his history Tutu has shown only good intentions and has fought for human rights for most of his life. He was an international voice against Apartheid and tried various different tactics to get foreign states to take further notice of the turmoil that was ravaging his home land. Once Apartheid had ended he headed up the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, giving victims of Apartheid the chance to tell their stories, and people who had participated in segregation to ask for forgiveness. He has been given credit for creating the term `The Rainbow Nation` and continues to make his voice heard while battling crimes against humanity, and will forever be known as someone who cared for people in general, no matter what their race.
Image by Port of San Diego
OR Thambo was a freedom fighter who spent 30 years in exile, all the while creating international awareness of the Apartheid horrors. Starting his career as a science and mathematics teacher at the high school he attended as a child, Thambo, along with Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu, founded the ANC Youth League in 1943 which focused all its attention on how to bring racial segregation to an end. By 1958 Thambo had become Deputy President of the ANC but was given a 5 year ban in politics in 1959 by the National Party, and therefore decided to travel abroad out of the reach of the government where he could create more awareness about South Africa’s political situation. He eventually returned to South Africa in 1991, after 30 years in exile, and died 2 years later in 1993 from a stroke. A man who never gave up in fighting for what he believed in. A true patriot. 4. Athol Fugard Perhaps South Africa’s greatest-ever playwright, Fugard is known not just for the well written and captivating plays he produced, but also for the attention he attempted to bring upon the troubling political stance in South Africa through his work. Plays like The Island and Master Harold... and the Boys best illustrate how Fugard used stage to fight racism plaguing the Rainbow Nation, and had to fight the government in some cases to allow him to stage his productions. Having won Tony Awards and garnered international acclaim through his efforts, Athol Fugard will always be known as a brilliant playwright who not only provided entertainment for audiences, but used profound themes and current events in an attempt to shine an international spotlight on South Africa’s inequality.
1.Nelson Mandela Not much can be said for the great man that people don`t already know. He was imprisoned for 27 years and given terrorist status for seeking a better future for his country. Once released he didn`t seek revenge that most were sure was inevitable, but rather looked to unify all the people of South Africa under one belief, that we could co-exist under one sky. People who have met him say there is no way to explain his presence. Not many men have been able to put the needs of a country before theirs in a way that this man did. The greatest hero South Africa has, and will, ever know.
3. F.W. de Klerk
When de Klerk became President of South Africa most people would have thought him just another National Party conservative, but he shocked his followers and the world when he announced the abolishment of Apartheid in 1989. De Klerk sought a country that had complete racial fairness, removing the outlaw tag from the ANC, releasing Nelson Mandela from prison and allowing all South Africans to vote. He was awarded a joint Nobel Peace Prize with Nelson Mandela in 1993 and will always be thanked for bringing a government to its senses and changing the course of a country.

UN EARTHED DOCUMENTARY by Jolynn Minnaar

I guess you’re never really prepared for the moment when you wake up on an airport floor in North Carolina - alone, lost and armed with nothing but a camera and a secondhand map of the US. Nor the moment when, despite warnings from the folk in Pennsylvania, you’re being trailed by a mysterious car while filming in rural Colorado. But, one day you realise that, what was once an inquisitive streak, has landed you on the wrong side of the road, 10 000 miles from home, trespassing property and trying to light water with Lion matches.
Seeking to remedy this, a long, eventful and sleep-deprived story short, un•earthed was born - an independent documentary committed to uncovering the facts of shale gas development by emphasising thorough research and fair representation in order to produce a project that informs people, from all sides of the argument, and assists and stimulates the important discussions currently needed in the country. With the support of Zootee Productions and powered by a diverse crew of talented researchers and filmmakers, un•earthed soon gained massive momentum locally and was able to spend five weeks on an intense fact-finding itinerary in the states of Colorado, Texas, Pennsylvania and New York.
Hi. I’m Jolynn Minnaar but, mostly, I’m Jo. While pursuing my dream of independent filmmaking, I work in camera departments of the local film and photography industry. There is no date to the start of the love affair that has become my career - it could’ve been when my mom took me to the opera as a little girl, or my grandpa’s Argus camera. It could’ve been my dad’s LP collection or, perhaps it was “Bicycle Thief”. But somehow my eclectic upbringing saw me opting out of a future in medicine and rather, in the world of media - of art, photography, music and ultimately, of film.

In January 2011, between the manic season of commercials and life on film sets in Cape Town, I stumbled across an article about something called ‘fracking’. I soon realised it was no awkward typo but rather a term used to refer to hydraulic fracturing - a somewhat controversial method used in extracting natural gas from layers of shale rock deep below the earth’s surface. I learnt that the proposed plans to explore the Karoo and broader regions for gas had prompted a massive, polarized (and somewhat emotional) debate in the country and that a major lack of information and transparency had left all sides of the discussion wanting. I learnt that this was certainly not unique to South Africa but rather a growing, global mudslinging issue between economists and environmentalists; between fuel or gas industry and citizens; between governments and community movements. 29 September - 19 October 2011

On returning from the United States, armed with fresh fine-tuned information and firsthand experience of the procedure of hydraulic fracturing, un•earthed is now in an advanced position to further its commitment to empower the citizens of South Africa - whether residents in the Karoo, industry members or decision makers in Government - with the results of a thorough, impartial investigation. The documentary is currently completing final key interviews in South Africa and caffeine driven post-production is in full swing. In line with the documentary’s original intentions, to enable everyday citizens to participate in productive discussions about the risks and benefits of possibly producing the country’s shale gas resources, the first round of distribution will take place in the Karoo and surrounding areas. For several weeks, screenings and Q&A sessions will be hosted in town halls, community centres and, I suspect, a couple of farm sheds. The second window of distribution will be via festival circuits and, thereafter, possible cinema or television release. Global interest in un•earthed, stretching from Australia, Scotland and the US, has called for an international version after the initial South African cut has been released and distributed. There is also talk of un•earthed’s sequel and a collaborative project with foreign filmmakers. Either way, suffice to say that the cameras wont collect too much dust - its only the beginning. As a filmmaker, you never really expect to become an expert on thermogenic methane or volatile organic compounds, to be on the receiving end of the camera or microphone or to be called to address auditoriums on the matter. As an everyday 23 year old, you never really get to brace yourself for the enormous moment of introspection brought on by hours and hours of around the clock research and the replies to some uncomfortable questions you’d probably prefer unanswered.

Do you know where the electricity comes from that powers your house? Do you know where the fuel comes from that starts your car? 9 months ago, I, possibly like you, had but a faint idea. But today, after reading this paragraph, I’d like you to stop and think for a couple of a seconds. Think about your lifestyle, about your consumption. Are you okay with it? Are you living in such a way as to ensure you or your kids or their kids have a tomorrow? And, even more importantly, are you concerned or doing something about it? I have no history of tree hugging and I don’t think tie-dye looks that good on me. I’m one of you...and I have stumbled across something. I’d like to tell you about it.

PHOTOGRAPHER - RYAN HILL
My earliest memory of taking photographs is when we would get together as a family and my gran would whip out her VERY outdated pocket film camera. She would always let me go outside and play with it after we had all smiled and said ‘cheese’. Strangely enough I never even bothered to look at any of those pictures after they were developed, and I think my parents were just relieved that playing with her camera kept my hyperactive mind occupied for a few hours. A few years elapsed before I again got the opportunity to satisfy my inner shutter-bug. It was during my studies, while I worked as a tour guide for a charter vessel specialising in whale watching and after many hours at sea, the boss eventually trusted me enough to lend me his EOS 40D. I found myself studying that camera’s user manual in my spare time, learning about shutter speeds, apertures, exposure values and other important things. Soon I was hooked and so I bought a 2nd hand Panasonic Lumix FZ30, which was arguably the best fixed lens camera money could buy at the time. (I specifically wanted a fixed lens camera as opposed to a SLR as I was photographing mostly off of boats and I had learned that interchanging lenses whilst trying to keep upright on a moving vessel was another art all on its own!) What inspires you as a photographer? There are two things which draw me to photography. Firstly I love the way good photographs can convey a story. This is probably the inspiration behind most of my work. Any photographer will be able to tell you a story about one of his/her pictures. Some pictures however, have the ability to make you feel as if they are aimed straight at you evoking emotion even before you’ve read their caption. Another inspiration for me as a photographer is that some photographs or a certain style of work can tell an audience alot about the person who took the pictures. I see my photography therefore as an extension of my character.
Stand Up Paddleboarding
My friend and I had decided to modify an old ‘Windsurfer One’ hull and try our hand at stand up paddle boarding. I had this image in mind well before I touched the shutter button and, after much frustration, I got the result I was looking for. Many people comment on how the foreground and the unique lighting lead their eye to the surfer. Once again I over exposed the image and then later manipulated the shadow content.

Wave searching
This is one of those pictures of your friends just doing what they love doing. I took it at a university surf trial with the idea of showing where they had been, and where they were going. Their shallow footprints in the wet sand did the trick. I used the cameras sepia function as the lighting wasn’t great and slightly lowered the aperture to make the horizon seem further away. I also set the lens to the widest angle possible and got down really low.

What do I love photographing most? I would have to say that I enjoy shooting action photographs mostly. Any sports. I aim mostly to anticipate moments when the subjects skill, control, technique and determination are about to come together and then I do my best to capture that moment. If I am not out photographing high action extreme sports, I love to do landscapes. I often look for a play on shadows and I am absolutely fascinated by moving water, especially in low light conditions. Strangely enough, I haven’t really tried my hand at portraits yet. People are never really what they seem though are they? What gear do I use? I STILL use the first and only camera that I ever owned, the Panasonic Lumix FZ30. There are plenty of faster higher resolution cameras out there at the moment; but I have just never really found the need to get a ‘better’ one. The buttons and contacts are worn down from use and sometimes I have to shake it to get it to switch on. It’s been in for repairs 3 times and I have spent more money on keeping it working than what I spent on buying it. With all that said, it still gets me great results and I guess that its own quirks have become an extension of my photography too. In much the same way that a good artist can produce a great painting using toothpicks and a dishwashing sponge, a good photographer doesn’t always rely on a top end camera or lens to get a great photo. Where can we find you? At the moment I am working on getting more of my work ‘out there’. I rarely enter photographic competitions as they mostly require that the entries become their sole property to use as they wish. I am currently negotiating with a sport magazine to cover motorcycle endurance racing events next year. It’s in the pipeline though so I’ll have to wait and see what comes of that. Ocean Statues
Very special photo. I remember watching my friends out at one of our ‘locals only’ surf spots. Everyone was drifting around hoping a wave would come through, like statues, with the world moving about them regardless of their presence. The black and white colours emphasise the simplicity of the moment. This is a great example of how you don’t necessarily need the best equipment with impressive features to capture a beautiful moment.
Heaven in Franskraal
This picture was taken during the morning hours before going out to sea on the whale watching boat. At the time I was still learning the functions of my camera and I specifically remember taking this shot as the cameras warning icons were flashing red. (Basically it was telling me the composed picture was over exposed). I hadn’t figured out all the little icons at the time, so I just took the picture anyway.

A collection of biography’s, this documentary follows the stories of various different South African creators – be it music, art or dance - showing up our country as the beautifully intricate paradox that it is: high ideals, yet still a harsh reality for many of it’s locals. Backed by a moving soundtrack made up of all locallyproduced music, we watch each ‘creator’ as they try come to terms with who they are and interpret the world around them. From the young black boy hoping to make a living through singing opera to the old jazz legend watching the leaking pipe flood his street yet again. The outspoken Cape Flats social activist to the lyricist who speaks of her brother murdered by gangsters. Even a techno-music collaboration between a Black Diamond and a self-proclaimed ‘anarchist Boer’ – although their approaches and opinions differ at times, it’s evident they all share the passion and need for creativity. Our local myths are told through the mouths of our artists, and we witness how free expression can sometimes be all that’s needed to spark change. There is definitely power in the message this film carries, as it portrays through stunning cinematography the fierce spirit that is very much alive and kicking at the bottom tip of Africa. This is a showcase for not only those artists who are featured but a tribute to all the raw talent out there amongst the chaos that is the aftermath of a country once plagued by an extreme case of political racism. A wonderful gritty portrayal of SA as it is, The Creators acknowledges the power and importance of free expression and assures us that no matter how small, you can have big ideas and even bigger dreams.

Q: How would you describe the music that you guys make? Rob: We all come from different musical backgrounds, when we all got together we decided ‘let’s just all express ourselves however and see what comes out in the end’. Kyle: So it’s this amazing fruit bowl of different genres of music that became a concept which became Fox Comet. Q: So who of you write the songs or do you all have input? Rob: All of our songs pretty much come out of random jamming sessions in rehearsals, and then I just improvise with the singing. Kyle: Stephane the French extraordinaire lays down some guitar, Nick joins in with base, and we pretty much work around that. Call it new age rock, its meant to be music in a meditative form that takes you to the universe where the foxes are all chilling out on comets.

The guys of Fox Comet then came together (after a few drinks) for an interview with yours truly and the help of my right hand woman Journalist Jackie Cockshott. With band members backrooms, dodgy stairwells, and broken brandy and cokes spilt everywhere, as well as numerous interruptions (as it goes when you’re interviewing after a gig in a Live Music club) we sat with the guys and had a bit of fun getting to know them, this is what came about!
Q: Where did the name Fox Comet come from? Rob: Fox Comet... the name came from an old Chinese legend, which says that before we knew anything about them, fox’s used to ride around in different galaxies on comets! When we realized we were the only 4 people on earth who knew this we made it our mission – to tell people this and to teach them about the awesome comet-riding Fox’s.

Their music is described as melodic, African, groovy funk new age rock (with Kyle screaming “METAL!” every now and then between songs). Rob, being an actor, has theatrics and moves like I have never seen before! Nick and Stephane seem to be the more reserved guys of the band, but perhaps that’s because I was there. Nick bops and laughs and doesn’t move around much while playing, while Stephane gets playing and always has a tune. Long after the rest of the band has stopped playing Stephane is still on his own vibe playing away in his own world.

The upcoming Cape Town music group Fox Comet started in February 2009 and is made up of four guys who are all so different, yet somehow work so well together - from personalities that are shy, to introvert, to out-the-box crazy, to completely me(n)tal! The ‘guys’ being Lead Singer/ Sax playing Rob Coutts, Bass Guitarist/ Back-up vocals Nick Catto, Guitarist/ French Extraordinaire Stephane Courneloup and drummer, Kyle Gray. They agreed to let me into one (which ended up being two) of their Saturday afternoon rehearsals, the first of which was the day of their gig at Mercury Live Lounge, and the second being the day of the gig they had at Carnival Court (which was in aid of raising funds for charity!) Being the only girl in the studio I had no idea what to expect (and I don’t think they did either). It’s an unforgiving thing having a girl welcomed into an all-male bands studio – the name of which they made me promise not to reveal! But much fun was had, and many laughs came about while I was scaling furniture, climbing up to roof level, and lying on the floor to get some of the shots I wanted. The guys were completely chilled, and rehearsed and joked around as if I wasn’t there – which made for one or two awkward moments that I won’t mention.
MATT KEESON - ‘THE CREATIVE’ I’m Matt Keeson, local Cape Town photographer and musician. I started photography back in 2007 and quickly fell in love with it. I naturally drifted towards music with my photography and took many a snap at various gigs and shows around Cape Town. I am lucky enough to work as an assistant for a fantastic photographer and the amazing thing is that it’s not a full time job, so I am able to work on my own photography. When I’m not behind my camera, I’m playing music – my first love. I play guitar in the acoustic rock band Witness to Wolves with my girlfriend and vocalist Natalie Lucia. We also play for an alternative rock band The Fortean Anomaly in which I am the drummer. Those are the loves of my life and I split my time between all of them. My inspirations are simple enough; to do the things I love for a living. I want to inspire others by being true to myself and really being me. That’s what my blog is about; expressing myself through my craft – almost as if it re-affirms my beliefs, philosophy and creativity. Its an affirmation of who I am. I find it so easy to slip into routine and go about the daily grind of life. I decided to start a blog to encourage myself to photograph more. Not just to photograph more, but also photograph different things and actually put thought into them and turn it into a kind of art project. So this is what my blog serves - my creativity and a simple way to keep me pro-active. My aim for my blog is to keep it updated at least once a week with images that are a true representation of who I am. For those who are interested in my photography and images (most of which are for sale) can contact me via email at thellamastar@gmail.com. Be sure to check out my photo blog and sign up for updates to be emailed to you. If you would like to see more of my photographs please have a look at my flickr account.

‘The Creative’ “The Creative” is a series I started on my blog to showcase some incredible artistic talent that surrounds us. My aim is to photograph the creative in their element, when they are too focused to care that there is a camera in their face. I want to capture their true creativity at work and hopefully show how we each express ourselves differently, yet remain in the realm of creativity – we are equals striving for a goal. I believe being creative is an important part of life. We need to know the feeling of creating; the attachment to something we nurture to completion. As we know its all too easy to tear down and destroy something, but to conceive, initiate and forge an idea into existence is truly inspiring. The first in the series focuses on tattoo artist Raoul Goetze from Wildfire in Long Street. He is both a musician and artist. Just watching him work and noticing his habits shows he is passionate about his craft. His ability to conceptualize an idea and they way in which he carries out his art is mesmerizing. It is as if he is able to see the final piece on the skin. Awesome artist! Check him and the other artists at Wildfire, Long Street or check out www.tattoo.co.za for his portfolio.

ANELISA MANGCU SEES “THE MOMENTS” AMIDST THE CHAOS
Bright and full of life, 19-year-old Anelisa Mangcu recently launched her debut solo photographic exhibition, entitled “The Moments” Amidst The Chaos at Rococo Studio Gallery in Cape Town. Judging by the über chic crowd who attended in their masses and the interest shown from both the media and buyers, this young lady is set for success.

Born in Port Elizabeth in 1992 and raised in Cape Town, Anelisa is currently enrolled at Vega Cape Town, where she’s studying to become a copywriter. Why the decision to study copywriting, and not photography? “Photography is a hobby for me. I love it and everything about it, but I want to pursue all avenues and keep practicing photography as a hobby,” she says. While at Rustenburg High School for Girls, where she matriculated in 2010, she took on many leadership roles, including Head of the Photographic Society (Exposure), Head of the Photographic Team for the School Magazine, Secretary and Committee Member of Jabulani Society and House Captain for Michael Vos. This overachiever has a string of awards behind her name. She was awarded Best Director for an inter-house play, which she wrote as well as Best Production Design; she received the Lauren Alexander Award for Consistency and Dedication for Design, the William Kentridge Award for Improvement and Development for Visual Art and the Blueprint Award for Portraiture in Photography. “I see myself as a little bit complicated. I am compassionate, vibrant, open-minded and tolerant by nature. I expect much of myself while considering the demands and needs of others. I am optimistic, and without fail, tend to dig deeper even when it isn’t necessary. I’m fun but focused, crazy but collected. I’m passionate but most importantly, I am a child, a sister and an artist,” she says when describing herself and her work philosophy. Her exhibition, which she started blogging about 131 days before its opening, is at once a reflection of this young artist’s ability to see the detail in everyday objects or moments, and to turn those into accessible works of art for the viewer.
“The Moments” Amidst The Chaos can be viewed at Rococo Studio Gallery, 38 Buitenkant, until 1 October. Follow Anelisa’s blog at http://anelisamangcu@blogspot. com. 29 September - 19 October 2011

Not a single person left the exhibition on the opening night without a question to the artist. People were milling about her pieces, debating it, wondering about it and observing the world from Anelisa’s perspective. “My objective with the series of works was to document the importance of a single moment, and the story that it holds. With that I wanted to highlight the significance of time and human life. Every moment counts and the details of that moment are what matter the most. My aim is to identify, through imagery, the mundane moments in life that are taken for granted, and at times the contract between subjects.”

GAGA WAS BORN THIS WAY
by Liz Kruger
IT IS ONE THING TO BE INFLUENCED BY PREVIOUS SUCCESSFUL ARTISTS... BUT IT IS SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRELY TO COWARDLY FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF OTHERS HOPING TO GAIN THE ACCLAIM THAT THEY HAVE... Lady Gaga caused widespread confusion and debate at the 2011 MTV VMA’s as she appeared onstage as her alter-ego, the hyper-masculine Jo Calderone. Dressed in a plain, but dirty, white T-shirt, black slacks and black blazer, with slicked back 1950s-inspired greasy hair and thick black sideburns, Lady Gaga completely immersed herself in this persona, never breaking character throughout the entire duration of the awards show. Her dark brooding eyes, chain smoking and typically masculine actions enhanced her dedication to this Sicilian-born character. This is not dissimilar to Stefani Germanotta’s extreme dedication to her persona of Lady Gaga. . Her dedication to her Jersey Shore reminiscent alter-ego of Jo Calderone is in direct correlation to Stefani Germanotta’s long-term dedication to her alter-ego as Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga is not an actual person, she is in fact, a brand, a character, and it is through this persona that Stefani expresses herself and performs as an artist, a singer, and possibly most importantly, as a performance artist. One could say that Lady Gaga is arguably the number one fashion icon since her first single was released in 2008. Not even Madonna can keep up with her these days! She has kept audiences on their toes, or the edges of their seats, whether they choose to be fans (affectionately known as “monsters”) or not. This has been demonstrated over and over by her risqué and innovative fashion choices in the recent years. Her outlandish outfits have resulted in widespread criticism, praise, bewilderment and mystery, as well as misunderstanding. As her career has evolved, her outfits have become even more bizarre and eccentric as she continues to push the boundaries of fashion and art,
This Image is used in Fair Use
Perhaps her performance as Jo Calderone at the recent MTV Video Music Awards was also, among other things, a tongue-in-cheek stab at the initial confusion and speculation regarding her gender. Or it could have been purely a tribute to her huge LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) following. Whatever her reasons, this was way more than a mere fashion statement.
This Image is used in Fair Use
Since her explosion onto the music scene in 2008 with her first hits “Just Dance” and “Pokerface”, Lady Gaga has kept audiences in suspense as to what her next wardrobe choices would be. Twenty five year old Stefani Germanotta has created this persona, which, at the start of her career, could not be understood by unsuspecting audiences, such to the extent that despite her obvious lack of the necessary anatomy, she was even thought to be a man.
and the attention she demands (whether it be good or bad) has undeniably been paid to her, deservedly so! In the world of celebrities it seems any press is good press.. Possibly her most shocking outfit was that dress now known as “The meat dress” at the 2010 MTV VMA’s. Although I suppose by now it should be called the Biltong dress. Admittedly, this was an extremely shocking choice of couture, which was unfortunately, completely misunderstood by certain groups of people, who could not grasp the fact that this was so much more than a tacky or distasteful cry for unwarranted attention. Gaga’s devotion to offering the public instances of completely atypical appearances should be merit enough for us to actually take the time to understand and comprehend her choices. And let’s be honest, who hasn’t ever wanted to tell Cher to “hold my meat purse”. Many fans and even non-fans were caught up in the speculation of how she was going to top herself this year, after the much talked about meat dress last year. And I believe she made the boldest move this year in not only dressing like a man, but in committing to that character. In creating this persona of Jo Calderone, Lady Gaga demonstrated the ultimate display of “non-fashion”. This was especially highlighted in the wacky outfits worn by other female artists who seem to fall in the same musical and age category as Gaga. Katy Perry wore an outfit seemingly Gaga-inspired, with a meaningless yellow block on her head, which merely generated an image of a block of cheese in the viewers’ minds. Recent newcomer Nicki Minaj seemed to be desperately crying out for attention in her unsuccessful senseless Gagainspired creation, complete with toy stuffed animals hanging off her dress and the donning of surgical mask. By dressing like a man, and actually becoming a man complete with a clear personality, history and background, Gaga defied the critics by refusing to upstage her 2010 meat dress as was expected. Seeing the likes of Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj attempting, unsuccessfully, to channel and copy that creativity, confidence and lack of self-consciousness that Lady Gaga exudes, only re-establishes and cements the total dominance she has over female fashion. When Lady Gaga burst on to the scene, her strange outfits were condemned by many, much like her persona. However, over the years we have seen her influence creep in to be 29 September - 19 October 2011

FASHION displayed by numerous big names (both male and female) in the music, arts and fashion industry. She has endured the criticisms, stayed true to herself and her persona, has been endlessly copied, and now, has completed a full cycle, by cleverly rejecting the expectations of the public to top herself.
It is one thing to be influenced by previous successful artists (in Lady Gag’s case- the glam rock movement of David Bowie and Freddie Mercury, as well as the dance pop scene made famous by Michael Jackson and Madonna) and to turn those influences into something which is innovative and fresh.(For example, Lady Gaga’s Madonna-inspired video for Alejandro was more of a tribute to Madonna than a copy.) But it is something else entirely to cowardly follow in the footsteps of others, hoping to gain the acclaim that they have, only to fail horribly, and then be absolutely upstaged by said person.

Love her or hate her (yes, I love her), Stefani Germanotta’s choices leave most people hanging by a thread, waiting to see her next bold move, and it is impossible to deny her creativity, passion, and painful dedication to the “monster” she has created.

Two friends from Cape Town decided to sell T-shirts in order to raise funds for their matric vacation in 2007. Simon Pocock and Mpilo Deporres Ngcukana didn’t realize that their label “Simon Deporres” would grow into a full line of sleek menswear sold at retailers such as A-store. Inspired by the likes of David West, Mingo Lamberti and Topman, their brand has recognized the value of design, art, detail, functionality and most importantly style. Their items are a clear combination of local classic street wear and haute couture. The definition of haute couture is garments made for a specific kind of customer and Simon Deporres is an exemplar of this. Simon Pocock, the talented creative, who graduated last year from AAA advertising school with a BA Visual Communications specializing in Graphic Design and currently works on the creative side at the A-store in web design, store windows, campaigns and design for the inhouse label. Mpilo Deporres Ngcukana, the businesses mind of the brand, is currently doing Business Science Finance at UCT. It is evident that S.D is not only a menswear brand but it is a lifestyle.

SURFERS EAR - THE FACTS
HEALTH
Fact No. 1: Not much beats surfing. If you think that’s not true and some other rather obvious alternatives outrank it, stop deluding yourself. You’ve either never surfed, or the guy or girl you you’ve got the hots for has kicked you to the curb for being a surfer. Fact No. 2: If you spend enough time in cold water you’ll sooner or later end up with Surfer’s Ear.
well you’re back in the surf working on growing your next crop of exostoses in 4-6 weeks. So how do you prevent these things from growing? Realistically speaking, only by keeping water out of your ears, which of course means earplugs. There are lots available, mostly stocked by surf shops. However, I must mention one which has an interesting history.
What is “Surfer’s Ear”? Ben Trovato devoted two of his weekly rants in the Sunday Crimes to this very topic, and while I confess to laughing my head off, I’m sure he left everyone confused as to what he was talking about.
In the 1970’s there was a GP in California who stressed himself into a heart-attack, defibrillation, bypass, the whole trip. He obviously found himself with a little time on his hands to reflect on where his lifestyle was leading and understandably gave serious consideration to finding a less stressful source of income by treating only a disease which affected healthy young people who weren’t going to die on him. Surfer’s Ear got the nod, so he designed an earplug which floated, prevented water entering but still allowed normal hearing, and came in different sizes.
Your ear canal is a skin-lined tube extending about 2-3 cm into your head ending at the eardrum. To prevent it from collapsing it’s supported by cartilage for the outer half and bone for the inner 1-2 cm. When cold water enters the ear canal, the skin lining blanches, much like what happens to your fingers and toes when they’re cold. When you then come out of the water and your ears warm up again, a flush of warm blood flows through the skin and of course to the bone lying immediately underneath it. Now here’s the rub – when bone gets an increase in its blood flow it grows. In this case it has nowhere to grow but inwards into the ear canal, and these bony ingrowths are called exostoses. With repeated exposure they grow bigger and the ear canal becomes narrower until it can even block up completely with bone.
He became an instant millionaire and spent his time lounging on the balcony of his beach house sipping gin & tonic and indulging his fantasies. His name was Dr Scott and he invented Doc’s Proplugs. There’s apparently a contract out on him from his ear, nose and throat colleagues but nothing worries him anymore.
The innermost part of the canal right at the eardrum is not affected, so essentially you have a canal shaped much like an hour-glass with an outer and inner open portion separated by a bony stricture. The problem with this is that anything which enters the canal and manages to pass through this narrowing tends to have difficulty getting out again, so your ears are continually blocking and getting infected. While this is just a minor irritation at first, it almost invariably progresses to become a major pain in the rear end not to mention the financial impact of doctor’s visits on a surfer’s usually overcommitted fiscus! The options are pretty stark: live with it, or have them removed. That’s it. And as Ben graphically described, having them removed means an operation with general anaesthetic, hospital, finger-prick, urine test --- the works. The condition usually affects both ears fairly symmetrically, so most people choose to have both done at the same sitting so to speak and get it all over with in one shot.
Surfer Girl by Mike Baird
It’s an operation which is pretty sore afterwards for up to a week, quite a bit like having your wisdoms done. These days it’s usually done through the ear without having to make a cut behind the ear. You spend up to 24 hours in hospital after which you go home with a plug in your ear for a week or so. For this period you’re rather deaf, but then at your first postoperative visit the plug is removed and you’re back on the air permanently again. After that you generally see your surgeon on a weekly basis for checkups, and if all goes 29 September - 19 October 2011

BEAT STRESS CAPE TOWN STYLE

Exams, work, money, relationships… Here are five ways to shrug it off CT Style! 1. THE GREAT OUTDOORS: The weather has picked up, and the sun and its summer happiness are finally back in town. Bathing yourself in it causes your body to increase its vitamin D and serotonin levels, making you happy! There are oh so many wonderful outdoor ventures in Cape Town, but we’ve picked two that we think will get the Summer off to a stress free start. Our pick: Rhodes Memorial. Take a picnic, some drinks, a few friends, and relax on the steps as you look upon the beautiful views. Clifton beach: same thing, grab the necessaries and chill out. ‘nough said! 2. MOVE IT AROUND, STRETCH IT OUT! We all know that the best way to go beat stress is to knock it out with some exercise in the gym or on the road. But lets be honest, it’s not always the most fun way to go about things, and staring at some weights or the tarmac can get a bit boring! Our pick: Yoga! Yoga is not only a great form of exercise, but also seems make the stress float away and leaves you feeling somewhat euphoric. Where to go? Yoga Zone in CBD, Strand Street, is our suggestion. 4. GET FISHY! The healthy omega fats in fish such as tuna and salmon have been proven to keep cortisol (stress hormone) levels steady at times of stress. So chow down on fish! And what better and tastier way to do that than in the delicious form of sushi! Watching the wallet? Our pick: Mr. Minato’s. For a totally unique and exciting sushi experience, head on to Mr. Minato’s, or Papa San as he’s known by the locals. He’s a character like no other, and you’re guaranteed to be entertained. Wanna splurge a little? Our pick: Takumi. This is Papa San’s slightly more up-market restaurant. For service and top quality dishes, go here, for pure experience, go to Mr. Minato’s, for taste: go to either! 5. LAUGH IT OFF! Studies have shown that a good laugh will not only boost your immune system but also increase the release of endorphins (natural feel-good chemicals in the body), which will leave you feeling relaxed and give you a sense of well being for hours. Our pick: Zula Bar, Monday nights. When? Monday, 8pm – run by Starving Comics 29 September - 19 October 2011

3. BIG ON BREAKFAST! A good wholesome breakfast full of healthy wholewheat carbs mixed with some protein has been proven to lift ones mood! It’ll also give you sustained energy throughout the day, and mean that you will be able to pass that mid afternoon slump as well as be more likely to say no to those sugary, quick fix, cravings. So if you want to eat big, do it the healthy way at Buzz Café for breakfast. Our pick = Buzz Cafe 96 Kloof Street, Tamboerskloof, Cape Town Ambiance: Hip & Happening, Comfy & Casual, Contemporary Cool

MOVIE REVIEWS FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS
Two young professionals decide to have a sexual relationship, leaving aside any romantic feelings, which hits some highs and lows, and we’re sure you’d be able to guess the end. Although there isn’t really a new concept lurking in the story line, the lead actors (Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis) form quite the comedic partnership and make it more a comedy than just the usual rom-com. Worth seeing if you’re in the mood for something light hearted.
THE TREE OF LIFE
Brad Pitt and Sean Penn star in Writer/Director Terrence Malick’s experimental movie which explores the meaning of life using a variety of beauty shots and emotive scenes. The cinematography is a work of art and the performances subtle in an extremely effective way, but the movie itself explores great depths through techniques that could have people nodding off in the first 10 minutes. If it captivates you then you’ll be blown away.
COLUMBIANA
Cataleya (Zoé Saldana) is an assassin out to avenge her parent`s killers. The tone of the film brings a much more human feel to the hitman film sector, and along with the believable characters, who thankfully leave out all the
REVIEWS
corny lines, Colombiana makes for a refreshing twist to this movie genre. There`s plenty of action and flashy leg shots as Cataleya kills her way to justice.
ABDUCTION
Someone`s definitely been dying to cast Taylor Lautner in an action film since he hit fame through the Twilight movies, and although they got their wish I`m sure they`re not too happy with the final result of the actual motion picture. Lautner just never seems believable as a teen who finds out he is not his parent`s biological son after seeing his baby picture on a missing persons website. If you insist on seeing it rather wait for the DVD release and save your money for something less pretentious.
FINAL DESTINATION 5:3D
Like the previous 4 before it, Final Destination 5: 3D follows a group of youngsters who escape death, but soon after begin to die one-by-one in the most disturbing freak accidents as death catches up with them. Although it has the same storyline, just with different actors, the 3D effects are fantastic and make the death scenes far more extraordinary than they were in the previous instalments. The film sets a special effects bar for up-and-coming horror movies to live up to.
THE PIE PACK IS BACK Recently, numerous Hollywood studios have been experiencing great success with the resurrection of sequels. Movie franchises such as Rocky, Die Hard, Predator and Pirates of the Caribbean have all come back to life with great box office numbers and now there’s another flick in the works that will bring a feeling of nostalgia for those who remember laughing at the dude going to town… on a pie.

American Reunion, the fourth movie consisting of the original cast, is scheduled for release in April 2012. The movie will see the class of 1999 return to East Great Falls for their High School reunion. Although there have been a number of American Pie films released since American Wedding (2003), none have had any of the original characters (excluding Eugene Levy) and have all been released straight to DVD. Actors such as Jason Biggs (Jim), Chris Klein (Oz), Tara Reid (Vicky), Eddie Kaye Thomas (Finch) and Mena Suvari (Heather) all rose to fame in 1999 with the release of the first American Pie which saw 4 teens making a pact to lose their virginity by senior Prom. Since the initial popularity, none of the actors have managed to maintain A-list movie star status, apart from Sean William Scott who has had success with films such as Mr. Woodcock, The Dukes of Hazard and The Rundown. The film could potentially do well at the box-office, relying on Stifler loyalists to keep the numbers high, and admittedly it would be interesting to see what this group would look like at a reunion – their last meeting being 2001’s American Pie 2. We wonder what embarrassing ‘duties’ Mr. Leven stein will catch Jim doing this time. 29 September - 19 October 2011

THE LOERIE AWARDS 2011
The 33rd Annual Loerie Awards took place on Saturday 17 September and Sunday 18 September 2011 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The Loerie Awards is an annual recognition of the best work produced in the brand communication industry in our region – Africa and the Middle East. “After two years of a decline in entries, 2011 saw a small increase in entries over the previous year. I hope this is a sign that the economy is coming back to life but there is certainly still a long way to go. The number of Gold and Grand Prix awards were very tight this year, with only three Grands Prix being awarded overall. Clearly this is a message that although the number of media platforms available is constantly increasing, the ability to achieve the truly outstanding remains as difficult as ever,” says Andrew Human, CEO of the Loerie Awards. This year, three Grands Prix were awarded. They were: - Ogilvy Cape Town, Live Activations entry for Volkswagen, ‘Marching Band’; - Net#Work BBDO, Radio Commercial Campaign for Mercedes-Benz, ‘New Friends’; - HelloComputer, Applications & Interactive Tools entry for Musica, ‘The Flo Browser’.
MARCHING BAND
One of the most attractive features about the new Golf is its noise reduction innovations, making it officially the quitest cabin in its class in South Africa. VW wanted customers to know about this and so Ogilvy Cape Town proposed demonstrating it, instead of just saying it. They chose to do a live outdoor activationin one of the busiest recreational areas in Cape Town using a professional marching band. The band was enlisted to walk the entire 4km promenade performing their routine, but with absolutely no sound.
A FEW SPECIAL AWARDS Marketing Leadership and Innovation Award – Tracy Hirst In 2007 The Loerie Awards introduced the Marketing Leadership and Innovation Award. The accolade is awarded to an individual in recognition of their marketing achievements over an extended period of time. Each year, a shortlist is compiled – based on the success of brands over previous years at The Loerie Awards. This year the short list included the following brand leaders: Phumza Rengqe (Brandhouse) Enzo Scarcella (Vodacom) Tracy Hirst (Allan Gray) Gidon Novik (kulula.com) 29 September - 19 October 2011
Urban Edge Magazine 26
“The Loeries committee reviewed each brand, as well as the individuals behind the brands, and it was clear that Tracy was personally involved in Allan Gray’s brand success and has been an active contributor to the brand’s market position in South Africa. As such, Tracy has been awarded the 2011 Marketing Leadership and Innovation Award – a worthy recipient and outstanding example of the leadership, dedication, loyalty and commitment to a brand that is required to do something special,” commented Andrew Human, CEO of The Loerie Awards. EMI Music Award EMI Music partnered with the Loeries this year to give a special prize for the best use of licensed music in advertising. The award was presented to McCann Erickson for 8.ta’s ‘Emoticon Boy’ TV Commercial. The winning agency will receive a trip to one of the most famous recording studios in the world, Abbey Road Studios. This London-based studio is most notable for the innovative recording techniques adopted there by The Beatles in the 1960s. Vodacom Mobile Award This award, in partnership with Vodacom Mobile Media, has been put in place to recognise the growth of mobile devices as part of the marketing mix. The Vodacom Mobile Award rewards the most creative use of mobile media in the Internet, Mobile and Interactive category. The award went to 140 BBDO and Native for the ‘Visi Covet’ iPhone application. The winner receives a special prize for the creative team, plus media space for the agency. ADreach Street-Pole Award The Street-Pole category was introduced this year for the first time. The award went to Ogilvy Cape Town for Stimorol’s ‘Yoda’. The winner will automatically be entered into the outdoor advertising category at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. In addition, the winner receives an all-expenses-paid trip for two to the event in Cannes. Ubuntu Award, sponsored by Hetzner The Ubuntu Award was launched in 2010 to recognise brands contributing to social and environmental change. A Gold Loerie was awarded to The Jupiter Drawing Room Cape Town for their Woolworth’s campaign. A Silver Loerie was also awarded in this category to Core Group for iSchoolAfrica Youth Press Team and Bronze award went to Ogilvy Cape Town for Kiwi’s Takkie Brite Bozza Campaign. Adams & Adams Young Creatives Award The Young Creatives Award, sponsored by Adams & Adams attorneys for the first time this year, recognises outstanding achievement by talented individuals at the beginning of their careers. This year the award went to Kenneth van Reenen, copywriter at MetropolitanRepublic and Sophia Strydom, graphic designer at Joe Public. They each received a Gold Loerie and an all-expenses-paid trip to an international award show.
REVIEWS STUDENT AWARDS This year, five Gold Loeries were awarded: - Lubabalo Mtati, from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, for his integrated campaign, ‘Kultured: A way of learning’. - Lodewyk Barkhuizen, from the Open Window School of Visual Communication, for his motion graphics film, ‘The Well’. - Ben Johnson, Nina Nelson and Warrick Sherrell, from AAA School of Advertising Cape Town, for their ‘National Geographic Calendar’. - Jolize Jacobs, from the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography, for her Converse packaging, ‘One size fits all’. - Zelé Angelides, from the University of Johannesburg, for her publication, ‘Kindle’.

COLD TURKEY
by Anelisa Mangcu
In between a worn out building and the train station in Woodstock, lies a venue where the culture-crazed generation of Cape Town gathers once a week to indulge in good conversation, food and music. It is a Sunday afternoon, and despite the rain my sudden craving for braaied meat, beer, drum and base has overwhelmingly taken over me. Fortunately in Cape Town, there is a place where one can get all of that and that’s Cold Turkey.
First held on the 26th December 2010 by founders Anthea Duce, Simon Wilson and Josiah Bourguet, the event was a success and just a few months later became the only way to spend Sunday afternoons for the local hipster crowd at District 6 Café on Darling Street. It was moved to a bigger venue, known as Amadoda’s in Woodstock. The venue’s location effortlessly works with the underground exterior that Cold Turkey embraces. The loud sounds of the trains passing don’t seem to impinge on the impact of the beats, coming from the DJ booth.

The unassuming nature of a typical Turkian, would find comfort in the R20 entrance fee, as well as the image of boys and girls swaying to the heavy beats, heads nodding, stylish Turkians and beer bottles all over the place. At only 9 months old, the success and growing numbers of Cold Turkey attendee’s prove that it is not just an arbitrary event, it is a movement. THE MK MUSIC VIDEO PROJECT When choosing the winners, MK set out looking for diversity in genres while staying within the main genres that are current and appealing to the MK target market- with a strong inclination towards rock, alternative, indie, electro and dance. This year also saw something unique in terms of the winners: 5 of the winning artists are female. And while this was not a deciding factor when judging the entrants, it is something important for MK and their direction as a channel, as they have recognised a need for more female artists on the channel and in the industry overall.
Following the success of the 2010 debut of MK’s MVP (Music Video Project) the music channel decided to up the ante for this year’s project by commissioning 12 South African artists (compared to last year’s 10 artists) to each produce a music video. To be eligible to enter, each artist had to team up with a South African production company and submit an original track, a concept and treatment for a video, as well as their proposed budget. Elements such as the choice of song, band/artist positioning, visual treatment of the proposed video and how well the concept complemented the MK brand and the appeal for its viewers, were all looked at by an MK judging panel when choosing the winners.
The winners for MK MVP 2011 are: • • • • • • • • • • • •

Stephan Potgieter, Content Executive for MK, is thrilled to see how well the Music Video Project has been received so far and is eager to see what the 2011 winning artists come up with. “MK has always been a very proud supporter of South African music, and the channel saw it was necessary to offer not only financial aid to artists, but also guidance, assistance and involvement by professionals in their respective industries – in this instance, the production field. I think one of the unique selling points we have in SA is that we are able to deliver an amazing product at a far lower budget than our international counterparts. The fact that we have some of the most beautiful locations right here in our backyard is another advantage for us. Couple that with extremely creative and dedicated people in production, and you have a force to be reckoned with; a force that is capable of creating mind-blowing music video content. In the end, the majority of people who make music videos in South Africa are doing it for the love of music, and MK is only too happy to be pro-actively involved in helping to make this happen.” Over the next few weeks MK will be following the progress of all the artists and their music videos. All 12 music videos will be premiered exclusively on MK in November. MK’s social media feeds will provide live updates and exclusive behind-the-scenes content: Facebook: www.facebook.com/MKtv.co.za Twitter: @mktv_ #MKMVP (the official Twitter hashtag for this year’s MVP.) HELLO SPR(U)NG!
MUSIC

for his dope beats, and proving why he is fast becoming one of the top psytrance DJ/producers on an international scale. Gandalf was next up, and another great act I’d never complain about seeing in any line up. To be honest, he’s probably one of the best and, at the same time, most underrated local Psytrance DJ’s around. Again he delivered a true deep Psytrance set that kept the intensity and energy level on the dancefloor slamming.
Arriving at the venue at around 5:30AM has become somewhat of a tradition with attending these trance parties, the main idea being to reduce the hang over and wear for tomorrow’s day at work. Not forgetting that the Sundays always make for the best part of the parties, especially when clear skies and sun are predicted, much like the Sunday of Sprung! Before I proceed I’d like to explain the amount of effort the artists and organizers put into this event, starting with how brilliant the décor and staging looked. A little more shade covering the dancefloor for the daytime jam would have been welcomed, but other than that it was top class and credit is rightly deserved! I don’t remember this, but I was told that the psychedelic flower to the front/middle of the stage even mechanically opened as the sun rose, just an example of the level of production we have become accustomed to from the local promoters, especially Alien Safari! The first act we caught was Xatrix, which was a fantabulous way to start a Sunday morning. PlusMinus followed suit, and not much can be said about their set. It was standard PlusMinus, something I’ve become used to over the past couple of years, but by no means average. It was brilliantly executed and you could see the crowd had been waiting for them to take the stage. Adding a certain warmth whilst keeping their cutting edge morning sounds would be the best way to remember it. Brainiac followed, and this was someone I had been looking forward to seeing for a while. His sound is unique and is somewhat more edgy than the standard solarwaves records sound. However, that’s not to say I remember all of it. I definitely made too many trips to the bar and my vehicle for refills during his set whilst the sun was coming out.
Loopus & Fabula; I’d never heard of them but had checked out some of there stuff online prior to the party, in my opinion bordering on progressive house. The one thing I have come to learn about Alien Safari’s line ups is that they are always so different and universal compared to most other productions. They always supply an element of surprise and doubt, if I may say that, yet I have never attended one that I haven’t enjoyed! Psytrance is presently in a transition stage as a genre of music, or should I say a state of fusion and cross-genre pollination. Acts such as Neelix, Daydin, Captain Hook, Liquid Soul and Ace Ventura have brought the progressive side to the main stage and made it acceptable to mix full on with progressive. But I was still asking myself why Loopus & Fabula? This question was soon answered, and to me, Loopus & Fabula are not a Psytrance act, let alone a progressive Psytrance act. Now I am not professing to know everything about electronic music, let alone Psytrance, but what was emerging from the Massive sound system was disappointing. They played a bouncy house-like set, that if anything helped the Alien Safari organizers fizzle out some of the crowd. If that was there intentions then well done to the organizers, but I noticed a lot of long faces around the dancefloor, almost looking confused. Towards the final 30/45 minutes of Loopus & Fabula’s set something changed, or should I say everything just escalated. The dancefloor became manic! No one cared who was playing, let alone what they were playing. Water was being thrown everywhere and people were going ballistic. This wasn’t because Loopus & Fabula was playing
By the time Headroom was preparing on stage for his set, the dance floor had filled up to the expected volume and everyone was anticipating a stellar performance. His first drop got everyone on their feet and the crowd erupted! He had control of the masses from there on, playing his signature sound of full-on daytime psychedelic funk, something that is just unbeatable on a Sunday afternoon (or in this case Sunday morning). MUSIC the illest set, but rather because people were just euphoric that spring had arrived, bringing with it the beginning of the summer Psytrance season. He grabbed the last thousand or two and had the dancefloor singing along to a re-bouncyedit of the Boogie Pimps “Don’t you want somebody to love” track, something I have never seen at a party before. Sprung was definitely one of the best executed outdoors I have been to in a while. The venue was well set out, the

sound was beyond HUGE (one of the loudest sound systems I’ve heard to date), the décor and staging was awesome, and as far as I was aware there were no unwanted debacles. Again, the local talent supplied the best Psytrance beats in my opinion. So thanks Alien Safari for an epic start to the season I think everyone will be excited to see what you bring out the bag for “The Flying Circus” and “Rezonance” later this year.

SHADOWCLUB
by Nadine Van Eeden
With international acts like the Black Keys bringing blues and rock & roll back into the mainstream, now is the perfect time for Johannesburg-based Shadowclub to be making their mark on the South African music industry. Shadowclub are truly a ‘back-to-basics’ band consisting of only three members, three instruments and a whole lot of passion for what they do. Jacques Moolman heads up the band on vocals and guitar and is backed up by Louis Roux on bass and Isaac Klawansky on drums. While many bands are churning out over-produced albums, Shadowclub recorded Guns & Money in just 9 days. This gives their music a raw and genuine quality that has been missed by many music lovers in South Africa. The album was released 11 July 2011 and has been doing incredibly well. Shadowclub’s first two singles, Guns & Money and Good Morning Killer, have enjoyed radio play all over South Africa. Guns & Money is a favourite on 5fm and will have you singing and steering-wheel-drumming along to the radio at full blast. Good Morning Killer is currently at number four on the South African Billboard chart. The band has released a video for each of these singles and you can check these out on their Facebook page. Shadowclub recently played at the Assembly along with Desmond & the Tutus and others and their performance 29 September - 19 October 2011

received rave reviews. Cape Town won’t be deprived of their sound for long as you can catch them performing at Rocking the Daisies on the 9th of October. Shadowclub and their fans recently received exciting news when Big Concerts announced that Shadowclub will be opening for Kings of Leon in Cape Town and Johannesburg along with Die Heuwels Fantasties and the Black Hotels in October. When asked if they are looking forward to opening for Kings of Leon their response was that “We can’t wait to share a stage with Kings of Leon. They have played an influential role in the style of music that Shadowclub make, and we are all big fans.” This gig may just be the launch pad that they need to make it internationally, so their dream of playing in Europe and America may not be as far away as they think. The album is available from Look & Listen online and at stores nationwide.

OUR PICK: HERMANUS As the weather continues to heat up and the feeling of summer creeps in, many of us will be looking to take a trip out of the concrete jungle and head for some alternative scenery. One of the Garden Routes little harmonious settlements that still continues to attract the masses, partly due to its abundance of lovely beaches, is Hermanus. It is by no means a hidden paradise, as most of us have been there before, but if it’s been a while then we suggest you head back in the near future. Accommodation is relatively easy to come by. A large majority of properties in the suburban region of Hermanus are holiday houses, and in these economic times owners have taken more to renting out their accommodation, although some charge through the roof. There is obviously no shortage of hotels and guesthouses too, as Hermanus is predominantly a holiday town, with most offering seasonal specials. The fantastic thing about this seaside town is that you never find yourself starved of things to do. There is always a platter of daytime activities to partake in, and the area isn’t low on nightlife attractions either. For those who enjoy a bit of fun in the sun, Hermanus plays host to a number of awesome beaches, Voelklip, Nanny’s and Grotto to name a few. Most have satisfactory surf spots and attract vast amounts of water sport enthusiasts on any given day. For those who would rather stay out of the sand there is a quaint craft market that offers a versatile selection of products and ornaments, and is always fascinating however many times you’ve walked through it. Of course one of Hermanus’s
TRAVEL
core attractions is the whale watching season, which brings crowds to stand above the Old Harbour viewing Southern Right Whales moving into the area. If you’re still wondering if there’s an activity in here for you the town also offers hiking, diving, sea boat fishing, paragliding, paintball, museum tours and a movie theatre (for those who prefer the indoors). If you enjoy sundowners and a little night on the town then you’ll struggle to find disappointment, as Hermanus is ideal for people who enjoy starting the late afternoon with a drink and dinner, then moving onto a vibey location for a party. If it’s a swell day then head to Bientang’s Cave, located right on the seafront rocks next to the Old Harbour. There’s always a great atmosphere and it’s always hard to leave once you get started. Alternatively Burgundy Restaurant also makes for a stellar late afternoon sundowner spot, with its view of the Atlantic Ocean second to none. When you decide the night needs to progress, Cubana would be the first choice to nestle into. Great layout and tasty cocktails insure a worthwhile night. If a more interactive venue is your scene then try Gecko Bar in the New Harbour, which usually pulls in a few live bands, is generous with their prices, and leaves you feeling slightly fragile the following morning. Like we said, you’ve most probably been there before, and hopefully we reminded you of the great times you experienced prompting you to go back. For those that cannot say they’ve ventured into this relaxing, but also adventure-packed civic, then give it a try this coming season.

SPORT
THE 2011 RUGBY WORLD CUP REPORT So after 3 weeks we’ve been able to monitor which teams are looking hot and which teams are failing to impress. South Africa suffered a shaky start to the tournament, beating Wales by the skin of their teeth. The boys in green and gold did a fine job of silencing their doubters a week later by pulverising Fiji, a team many believed could cause us problems. They’ve since given neighbours Namibia a serious beat down, and are starting to show the potential we all know this group of players to possess. Certain players in particular are thoroughly enjoying the 2011 RWC and displaying fantastic form. Frans Steyn has been given the role of inside centre following Jean de Villiers injury and is revelling in this position, running in 3 tries so far and reforming a formidable partnership with Jacques Fourie. Captain John Smit underwent a tsunami of criticism after the Wales game for his abilities on the field as a player, the majority believing he should step aside for Bismarck du Plessis. Although Bismarck might still be the better option, Smit has raised his game and really stood out as a key player in the last two encounters. Danie Rossouw also deserves a mention as his display against Fiji was truly world class and has made Victor Matfield’s absence almost unnoticeable.
The Northern Hemisphere teams are proving a mixed bag. Although they recorded wins, England really looked mediocre in their first two games. They raised their game against Romania to comfortably win the match, creating a whisker of breathing space from the British press. Ireland and Wales look feisty, and will most probably progress through to the quarter finals. Both are proving no teams to be taken lightly, especially Ireland. France has so far lived up to expectations, except the loss to New Zealand. Never write them off, no matter what perceptions their previous outings garnered. South Africa now takes on Samoa, and if all goes to plan should meet Australia in the quarter finals. The path, should we make the final, looks a tad rockier than 2007 with the Wallabies not being the first choice as quarter final opponents, but the Boks are in formidable form, and should the road progress as expected it should create a cracking encounter. With just less than a month to go it’s shaping up to be an amazing tournament and South Africans can happily be proud of their team.
The Haka by Ryan Pierse via Americanistadechiapas
New Zealand remains the favourites as they’ve ploughed every team to cross their path so far. The game where they really solidified their favourites status was against France, running out 37 – 17 winners, achieving revenge for their humiliation at the 2007 RWC. They simply look awesome and it’ll take some effort by the other teams to conquer the All Blacks. Australia has looked far less impressive. They beat Italy in an unconvincing display, and then provided the shock of the tournament by losing to Ireland. In their third game they defeated the USA, but the first 10 minutes of the game favoured America of all teams. Their loss to Ireland means a second place finish in their pool is likely, pitting them against South Africa, should we win our pool. Argentina has not quite lived up to their 2007 legacy, partly due to injuries of key players and they shouldn’t be expected to make it as far as four years previous.
MANCHESTER UNITED BACK ON LEVEL TERMS Anyone who follows the English Premier League cannot deny that Man Utd has looked the team to beat so far. It’s still early days in the season but the Red Devils have been in mesmerising form, smashing in an abundance of goals and leaving accomplished clubs in their wake. Certain players have been churning out fantastic displays, most notably Wayne Rooney and Nani. The new recruits have also been impressive, as have youngsters such as Chris Smalling, Tom Cleverly and Phil Jones. But if they were looking invincible they were bought back down to earth recently against Stoke City, drawing 1 – 1. It wasn’t a loss, but it reminded us that championships aren’t won in the first 5 games. 29 September - 19 October 2011

Manchester City are a growing force, with team unity becoming more evident in their camp, and with the quality players gracing the Etihad Stadium no one would count out City creating a new era as Chelsea did under Jose Mourinho. Speaking of Chelsea, their 3 – 1 loss to Manchester United hasn’t appeared to have dented their confidence, as they proved against Swansea City. Fernando Torres looks to have rediscovered some form, although his rollercoaster season continued with his sending off at Swansea, only a matter of minutes after scoring his goal. Liverpool looked to be progressing nicely under Kenny Dalglish, but their last few results will have Anfield faithful slightly worried. The good
SPORT news for the Merseysiders is the return of captain Steven Gerrard, who will be looking to bring some on field structure back to his side. Arsenal has finally recorded their first win of the season. All Gunners fans will remember the first games of the 2011/2012 season as a nightmare, partly because of an 8 – 2 loss to Man Utd. New players were needed and they are starting to gel, which Arsene Wenger will be looking to perfect. Arsenal’s north London rivals Tottenham remain a team with character under Harry Redknapp. They hung on to playmaker Luca Modric from moving to Chelsea and the decision is proving vital.
first win, but they have a monumental task if they are to catch the frontrunners. There’s still a long way to go in the Barclays Premier League, but we’ve got a good idea of which teams will be stealing the show.

With Rooney out for a couple of weeks, and Javier Hernandez looking fragile, Manchester United will need to find a replacement, obviously opening the door for Dimitar Berbatov to fight his way back into the first team. But as was proved at Stoke City, goals are vital to keep the momentum going, and Sir Alex Ferguson will be leaning on his side to step up the ruthless on-field reputation the Devils have established. Manchester City remain the perceived danger to United’s title, while Chelsea, and Fernando Torres, will be looking to take full advantage of the growing form being showed. Liverpool will be looking to create some performances if they are to fight for Champions League football next season. Arsenal will consider their season to now have officially started after recording their
1 POINT AWAY With his latest victory at the Singapore Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel is now 1 point away from becoming the youngest double world champion in history. Vettel could have won the title in Singapore, but with Jenson Button finishing second the young German will have to wait until Japan to be able to officially be re-crowned World Champion. There is a mathematical chance that Vettel could still loose the championship, whereby Button would have to win every race with Vettel not scoring any points in the remaining 5 races, which is practically impossible.
Vettel won the 2010 Championship in the last race of the season, beating out Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber in a dramatic final. Throughout 2010 he looked to be the inform driver but suffered various car problems which put him on the back foot. After the Korean GP where he had an engine failure, handing the championship lead to Alonso, it looked highly unlikely that he would have a chance at the title. But in the last race both Alonso and Webber found themselves stuck behind slower drivers and in low positions, unable to overtake. This handed the win, and World Title, to Vettel. This year has been far smoother, allowing the soon-to-be two time champ to assert his dominance over the rest of the field, and if given the right car for 2012 one would not bet against him doing it again. The next race will be held at Suzuka, Japan on 9 October 2011 and everyone knows that the two week gap is just a delay of the inevitable.

FRIENDS OF VALKENBERG TRUST The Friends of Valkenberg Trust (Friends) was started in 1994 as a result of the urgent need to improve conditions for patients at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital. As a result of this dream, a new High Care Unit has been built and the organisation has grown and developed into a registered NPO that is providing a wide variety of services focussed on making a difference in the lives of the approximately 340 patients and 400 staff at Valkenberg. Living with mental illness requires great courage as it affects many areas of one’s life. The Friends of Valkenberg Trust understands this and has a vision to improve the quality of life for the patients and staff of Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital. WHAT THEY DO... Through its 40 volunteers, the Friends work in conjunction with hospital staff to provide a range of services and skills training opportunities designed to bring hope and comfort to patients during their stay at Valkenberg. These services meet needs and help to restore patients’ dignity, emotional wellbeing and quality of life, supporting the process of recovery by building self worth and encouraging people to feel part of society. Most of our volunteers are not formally qualified in the area they serve, but enthusiasm and commitment are valued above formal training. We seek to complement the work of professional staff by offering various activity based and skills groups. Acknowledging the importance of both mind and body, we also offer sporting opportunities and staff a hair salon, as well as beauty therapy groups, which do wonders for self esteem. Meeting basic needs like clothing for the patient admitted in a crisis, transport costs for someone going home for the weekend or a food parcel for a patient discharged to a hungry family means that people are freed to heal and to get back to their lives without having to worry about these things. The 14 wards are often in need of items which make life more comfortable, for example a DVD player for evening entertainment or a microwave to reheat food for a patient who missed supper. We have a Second Hand shop on site which, as well as providing much needed funds, provides a valuable service to both staff and patients who are able to buy affordable goods.
The Friends not only provide direct services but we see a role in the education of the public around mental illness. There is still a stigma attached to being mentally ill and we attempt to break down barriers and dispel myths where we can, by public education and by exposing people to the reality of the work we do. HOW CAN YOU HELP? We rely on the community to support our yearly fundraisers and get involved where they can by volunteering their time, contributing financially, making bequests or donating services. We also welcome practical donations of any kind – clothing, magazines, art supplies, household items for the wards etc. We can use almost anything! Goods that are not used directly for patients or wards are sold in the shop. We have many projects that need funding and of course it is essential to hire suitably qualified staff to manage the projects, coordinate the volunteer programme and do the administration generated by all we do! Staff at a psychiatric hospital work very long hours under very challenging conditions. These men and women are providing a valuable service to vulnerable people and we aim to support their efforts and encourage them wherever possible. We do this by facilitating annual staff functions as well as funding innovative new projects and services. It’s not easy being admitted to hospital for what can sometimes be a lengthy stay. Friends organises social, cultural and religious events for patients throughout the year, bringing light and joy to the wards and linking patients with their community.
