Founded in 1986, by Carlo Petrini, Slow food is an international movement promoted as an alternative to fast food. The Slow Food movement incorporates a series of objectives within its mission, including:
. . . . . .
The Slow Food Movement has been formed to revolt against the fast food lifestyle we have all too easily become accustomed too. It promotes the belief that “everyone has a fundamental right to the pleasure of good food and consequently the responsibility to protect the heritage of food, tradition and culture that make this pleasure possible.” It is committed to retying the connection between people, communities and the food they produce and consume and now has 100 000 members across the globe.

SLOW FOOD MOVEMENT
.
Let me start this by proclaiming that, up until two weeks ago, I had never before won anything in my life. Winning a grand total of R2 off the R2 scratch card I bought from the corner shop up the road the day before, does not count… at all. My flatmate was, however, most impressed and relieved by my pocketing the R2 rather than using it to buy another scratch card (as is most likely intended) and by so doing, adding an addiction to gambling as another vice in my, and so equally her, existence.
Preserving and promoting local and traditional food products, along with their lore and preparation. Organizing celebrations of local cuisine within regions. Promoting “taste education”. Educating consumers about the risks of fast food. Lobbying against the use of pesticides. Teaching gardening skills to students and prisoners. Encouraging ethical buying in local marketplaces. Slow Food Mother City is a luscious branch of the worldwide Slow Food Movement. The grassroots movement began in Italy 22 years ago and is now supported in over 150 countries. This series of the popular primetime cookery show is made in South Africa, with hosts and hostesses from Durban, Johannesburg, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Cape Town battling it out for the cash prize. The format is simple; South African chefs takes it in turn to host a dinner party, and the guests score the host on their way home. Throughout, Come Dine With Me’s narrator never fails to make the most of the participants’ fumbles and foibles. Of course, with personality clashes at almost every dinner party, it’s often not just the champagne corks that go with a bang as insults are traded, homes are snooped around, and the flowing wine loosens the diners’ tongues. 10
We first met you on the cooking show ‘Come Dine With Me SA’. How did you feel about entering? I had been a great fan of Come Dine With Me since my days living in England, we used to record them religiously in order to watch them with the family after dinner at weekends. So in terms of entering the SA version, I had little choice as my friends and family would have disowned me if I didn’t at least enter - I wanted to enter the minute I saw the advertisement. You were quite mysterious on the show about your profession – what is DinnerWithAubs all about? Dinner With Aubs (the idea of cooking in front of a camera) is actually a concept which my dear friend Ian Scrimgeour first thought of when we were driving to his holiday home. Dinner With Aubs was then received the attention of his entire family and some of our friends when we sat under the famous “Knowledge Tree” a few hours later at their house. My cooking experience started early Of course dining is one of my daily rituals. We learnt on the show that you were adopted at a very young age, how has this affected who you are now? I was adopted when I was about 2, although the adoption is not in paper - this not being necessary as I still stay in touch with my Zulu family. This has been a very positive aspect of my life because I have two extraordinary family, some would say it has made me less Zulu but I have gained great grounding from both families. My soul mate was without doubt my adopted father Gerald Milsom, who passed away a few years ago. We were very close and he taught me a great deal about almost everything. I am who I am now as a result of being a proud Zulu and lover of things British!

Are you happy with the way you were depicted on the show? I thought I received a fair and mostly accurate depiction on Come Dine With Me SA. I enjoy food, music, wine and people - that is what I hope was evident - with few exceptions of course!
Where does your accent originate from? I suppose I must have picked it up at an early age from my English family - they all speak much better English than I do of course! Tell us something about yourself very few people know. I am actually a very shy person, I’ve just had the privilege of having a family which encourages one to speak up and be counted! You sink or you swim! What can we expect to see from DinnerWithAubs in the future? I am determined to have a show of my own on television, I enjoy the experience so much. So watch this space! What 3 items would you save if your house were on fire? The photograph of my father taken on his 60th birthday. My small CD holder. The small box of letters and cards etc from many years of correspondence. Can you recommend your favourite wine label, being the fine wine connoisseur you are? I love French champagne, but I am also very patriotic to SA, so I will have to go for Jordan Wines- I love what Gary and Kathy produce at their beautiful farm.

On an Ostrich farm. With 5 guys. With a camera. In the blistering hot sun. Sounds like something out of jackass, but it’s not. These were the ingredients for the photo-shoot and getting to know the guys of Dustland Express. If you haven’t heard of them yet, where have you been?! This awesome band consists of 5 talented young guys who produce music that filters down to the fibers of your bones and gets you bouncing about like a hyperactive ape. True story. There is Scott Murcott as lead singer and plays guitar, Kamil Govender on guitar, keyboard and vocals, Brent van Rensburg on guitar and vocals, Zack Viljoen on bass and vocals and Mike Stephan on drums.
If you are a true lover of good music, their favourite song of theirs “Castles in the Sky” will get your bum moving, “Hurricane” will get your toes tapping and “Cosmic Dinosaur” will have you jumping about.
This is one of the reasons this band is so unique. They are not your everyday head banging, oblivious to the world outside their music bubble, focused on groupie’s kind of guys, but have a message, story or whatever you want to call it for the greater good. Not saying world peace, but a little more realistic – like open your eyes, take notice and do what you can. But back to the music itself - Rock the River New Year’s Eve bash was the first time I had experienced Dustland Express playing live. One word fits the bill – EPIC! Though they’ve had a bumpy start, they have found their way into a cut throat industry that is music, with their melodic rock music spreading all over Cape Town, and hopefully, if they get their way, South Africa and beyond!
This Cape Town based band is said to have an element of “storytelling” to their songs and aims to send a message that will one day turn heads. “The System is Failing” was the theme of the photo-shoot that to put it simply; means the worlds systems are failing, flawed systems designed to make the rich richer and the poor poorer, creating a negative ripple effect, the world over. Which brings the question, why do we need a system that only benefits a handful of people? 12

If you are a true lover of good music, their favourite song of theirs “Castles in the Sky” will get your bum moving, “Hurricane” will get your toes tapping and “Cosmic Dinosaur” will have you jumping about. All in all their music is well worth getting your mitts on! But these are only a few favourites from them that brings out Scott’s unique vocals, with the backing of the rest of the guys. What was looking like a chilled New Years started getting crazy as soon as the guys from Dustland Express took to the stage. Watching them play live, had an electric energy, they drew in a rather scattered crowd of people still trying to find their whereabouts at Rock the River SA, quickly getting everyone in the mood for a long night of good partying. And what a party it was.

INTERVIEW
QUESTIONS JOHAN SWANEPOEL / THEMUSICRITIC
Dustland Express has been around for a while now. Has it been necessary to adjust the band’s sound through the years? Hmmm... not really, we’ve pretty much stuck to what we enjoy playing. We do experiment with different styles of music with our sound and if it fits we’ll keep it, and we love adding new/different instruments to the music, it makes it interesting. You recently played a tight show at Rock the River SA, how much rehearsal time goes into a gig like this? Thanks... for Rock the River we weren’t able to practice as much as we wanted to for the gig because of members going away, but we usually try to keep practicing 3 times a week to keep it tight. I see the band has embraced social networking as a key marketing tool, what kind of feedback are you getting from international listeners? Well... according to Facebook we have roughly 150+ people overseas who are “Liking” our music and that’s just from them finding us, we haven’t tried to pump it overseas yet, we first want to spread the music here before we look overseas.
With more and more music-based sites where fans can buy and download albums, like Soundcloud, Boomfm, and Bandcamp, (not to mention iTunes!), how relevant is it still to bring out hardcopies of an album? I think it’s still important to print albums ‘cause even though everything is online now, if I really like an album, I want to buy the hard copy to have... means a lot more for the listeners that appreciate the music. Share some of the ups-and-downs of being in a band, in particular being a South African band The downs at the start are when you have to play gigs when you know there’s a much bigger gig happening nearby and the gig is pretty empty, although you still gotta go on and give it all! But you still end up being pretty stoked afterwards, so it’s half a downer...An up is definitely when you hear people you don’t know cheer for your songs and want more.
keep it pretty tight and stay in time, this one gig we lost timing of the song and sort of stopped during our last song and looked at each other... but we quickly made it up by doing a random dance until we could pick up where we were in the song and carried on... it was probably like 5 seconds... five long seconds. What can fans look forward to in the next couple of months? We’re finishing off new songs and looking at shooting music videos which I’m sure will be a lot of fun and hopefully everyone will enjoy it!
On a slightly lighter note, tell us about a gig that went horribly wrong. Haha, I won’t mention where this happened but playing with a click track as we do you got to 27 January - 23 February 2012

USAIN BOLT TO SMASH HIS 100M AND 200M RECORD
08
2012 sees the Olympic Games head to London, England, and for those who follow Olympic sports there is sure to be one athlete who will recapture the pandemonium he created 4 years previously. In Beijing 2008 Bolt made history, fist by winning the 100m sprints by a country mile and setting a new world record, and then beating Michael Johnson’s 200m world record a few days later. The Olympics might not have the charm of the FIFA World Cup, or the fanatic following that South Africans give the Rugby World Cup, but it’s characters such as Usain Bolt that make certain events worth PVR’ing and watching over and over.

JULIUS MALEMA TO BE WELCOMED BACK BY THE ANC
CAPE TOWN TO BE ANNOUNCED AS A FORMULA 1 VENUE
There have been rumours circulating recently that a group of F1 loving businessmen are pushing hard to get the world famous event to stop off at the tip of Africa in the next few years. It’s no secret that Bernie Ecclestone, F1 Television Rights Boss, has claimed he wants a race held in Africa, and more specifically Cape Town. As Africa is the only continent in the world that doesn’t host a Grand Prix, there’s sure to be an agreement made in the near future, and there isn’t really any country other than SA which has the fan base and history to showcase the thunderous event. To be honest we listed this one because we really hope it happens. How awesome would that be? You might ask what evidence we have to support this claim, but we’re purely going on proof of past events, and the lenience of the ANC toward Malema. There aren’t many political parties around the world that would have endured someone of Juju’s character for very long, but the ANC seems to have quite the soft spot for this sparky personality. He has bought the name of the ANC into disrepute on so many occasions that analysts have surely lost count. Although recently having been charged with a 5 year suspension from politics due to comments he made regarding a regime change in Botswana, we’re sure that the appeal will be dearly noted, and Julius will nestle back down into his comfort zone in the ANC.

THE EURO TO BE RE-EVALUATED
Germany must be wondering why they share a continent with Greece at this present time. From having to save the Mediterranean country from financial disaster their own financial situation is looking rather worrisome. Now Italy, Spain and Portugal are also on the verge of looking for bail outs. All in all, the Euro’s very existence is in jeopardy. If it isn’t scrapped altogether, with all participating European countries having to revert to their own currencies, the Euro will have to be relooked to see how the currency can work.
CHINA’S INFLUENCE TO
06 BECOME MORE EVIDENT
MORE ARABIC NATIONS TO
05 RISE UP?
In 2011, the nations of Libya, Egypt, Syria, Bahrain, Yemen, Jordan and Tunisia all rose up against their rulers, in a bid to obtain leadership change. This was known as the Arab Spring, and although the storm seems to have simmered down a tad, it’s not too in comprehendible to suggest further rebellious outbreaks in the Middle East. For the people of these conflict areas we hope that we’ve struck a false prediction, after watching the violent scenes from Syria and Libya on the news channels.
STORMERS LOSE OUT AT
04 LAST HURDLE
For the past few years China has been cozying up to the leaders of African countries while proceeding with its economic colonisation of Africa. Most notable of these is Robert Mugabe. Others, most notably the ANC, prefer to keep their toasty relationship with the Easterners fairly low key, as China’s human rights reputation, or lack thereof, still strikes a chord with the Western Nations. In 2011 it became clear to the nation just how much power China has over SA when the Dalai Lama was denied a short notice visa into South Africa. This has now opened the pot into a subject that many will look into, and throughout the year we’re sure to hear a few interesting stories of our relationship with China.
INFO BILL TO BE FOUGHT
03 TOOTH AND NAIL
TOP TV’S NEW PORN
02 CHANNEL TO BECOME ONE OF SA’S BEST SELLERS There is an ongoing battle between Top TV and what appears to be every union and media organisation in South Africa at the moment as to whether Top TV should be allowed to air three 24hour a day pornography channels. The decision now lies with Independent Communications Authority of SA, who are scheduled to make a decision by the end of the month. Should the verdict go in favour of the Top TV lads there’s no doubt that half the male population of South Africa will rush out to get their hands on these three fun-filled channels.
01
The South African nation was left in shock on 22 November 2011 when the long rumoured Protection of State Information Bill was passed in National Assembly. Journalists, who the Bill will undoubtedly annoy and provide limitations for, have declared the fight is far from over, and have been joined in the fray by academics, who see this as a threat to academic freedom. Rival political parties are also calling for the Bill’s head. It has yet to become law, and still has a bit of red tape to contend with to get officially passed, but we can all be sure that we haven’t heard the last of the infamous Info Bill.
THE END OF THE WORLD
Let’s hope for everyone’s sake that this actually doesn’t come true. The Mayan Civilization, who lived in Central America before the European nations got in their sail boats and went exploring, had their own written language, which over time has been deciphered. Rumour has it that the Long Count Calendar, used by the Mayans to measure years, ends on the 21st December, 2012. Many have declared this the day the world ends, while others believe it to be as far as the Mayans got in drawing out their time line before they could carry on. We’re willing to believe the latter, but might just hang with John Cusack around December 21st, because he comes in handy in situations like 2012.
More close to home, The Stormers have been extremely consistent in recent years. Since the appointment of Rassie Erasmus and Allister Coetzee the local team have impressed, reaching a final and a semi final in the last 2 years. Although always looking a formidable force throughout the competition, displaying stellar teamwork and wonderful defence, they always loose out right at the end. Don’t get us wrong, we’re Stormers fans all the way, and would way rather see them win the Super 15 than come second, but with Rassie Erasmus just having left the outfit the performances of the boys in blue and white might just fall below par. None the less, please win this year.....seriously! 27 January - 23 February 2012

“A cup of hot nectar in hand is like holding the pot at the end of a chocolate rainbow. A first sip is like finding something under your seat on Oprah.” There is a shop just West of the Flat Iron building in New York that sells hot cocoa. The liquid is scooped up from a steaming pool and returned after a 360 spin on a rotating steel wheel behind the counter. It has customers mesmerised. It’s a huge shop with plenty of space but people still have to queue out on the street, especially in winter. This is not unusual in this city. Many New Yorkers take books to read wherever they go. But here, no one reads. They stare at the wheel. Some whimper, not with cold. The effect from this coffee shop in Cape Town is not dissimilar. But that’s where the parallel ends. Deluxe Coffeworks doesn’t need spinning wheels. Two cups of this stuff and you’ll see plenty of ‘em. The shop is tiny. You don’t have a choice but to wait outside. And no queue here, it’s a mosh pit of artists, designers, delivery boys, journos and bankers. A cup only costs 12 bucks – many, many bankers. Yeah, it’s got something of a theme and a design thing going on, but who cares. It’s about the coffee. The roasting machine chugs away right behind the counter. Discarded containers, sacks and beans are scattered about; the detritus of the coffee alchemy. No style mag or foodie blog 22

is gonna do justice by emptying it of people, peeling the fridge magnets and photos from the espresso station and neatening it up for a photo: Soft focus on the flat whites; spilled beans from a sack with not a kernel out of place. Stuff that, behind the counter you’re steppin’ on beans and those flat whites come hard and fast in full focus. The baristas are definitely using. They have thousand bean stares. Carl, the proprietor and chief alchemist, encourages their habit. Customers get faster service that way. He and his biz partner, Judd, started roasting in Carl’s backyard and dealing to a clientele that grew until they were doing 20 keys a week. The next step was working the corner of Church Street and Burg. They’re still there. Business is good. Carl says they were looking at working uber trendy De Waterkant, but they are staying put. There is something about Church Street clientele. It’s no cat walk - the mix of people - none of them a poser. Eclectic is too trendy a word. It’s the real thing. But what do I know; I’m just a user with a hankering for a fix who stands with the queue in Church Street, stares through the window and whimpers in 32 degree heat.

Arriving on a hot and dusty Saturday afternoon on the 31st of December it was clear that the celebrations had long been underway, stumbling dust and grass covered people swarmed like ants at the Cape Town Ostrich Ranch – the venue for 2011’s Rock the River Music Festival. It was a very hasty tent set-up that was akin to flying a kite, the wind factor wreaking havoc on my limited tent setting-up abilities. For peace of mind the tent was finally lashed to the car, Angie 1: 0 Wind!! Sunday dawned and with only a slight whisper of wind the day was set to be a scorcher. Braving the showers, it was time to freshen up for another day of music and libations. The cold water was a wake up of note but left me with the faint odour of perm solution, so next stop the river. Well maybe river was a wee bit of an exaggeration here, swamp would have sufficed. There were a few lonely souls braving the muddy waters to cool down but the award goes to the gentleman who stripped to his birthday suit and with balls waving free in the wind plunged in and Battling the gale and trying not to eat my hair did a full lap. Amidst cheers and encouragement every few minutes, I made my way through he swam from one side to the other and the maze of tents to the music arena, with emerged dripping wet and shall we just say the jaegermeister induced warmth, I was ready to water was pretty cold. The music seemed to jump up and down and party in 2012. Everyone be starting on a time frame of its own and with was in a similar frame of mind and the main technical difficulties the bars were full of people stage was a rowdy crowd of music and alcohol as were the shaded seating areas. Having missed enthusiasts, throwing abandon to the wind and the comedy acts the day before I wandered shaking body parts. The sound did not disappoint over and spent a few hours laughing at the and the bands fed off the crowds energy, reeling comedians who made up for the otherwise lack them in and resonating an orgy of frenzied of entertainment. movement. The electro tent featured a light spectacular and more UV and glow in the dark characters than a trance and LSD convention. Having done the rounds I made my way to a well spotted cocktail bar –the Tipsy Gypsy Art Bar. The cocktails were like manna from heaven after dancing myself to sobriety. Hog Hoggity Hog stands out amidst the smorgasbord of bands and dj’s as the act that rocked me right into 2012; their performance gave me tingles and was my New Year’s highlight. Following the stroke of midnight and many cocktails later it was time to travel back through tent city. Not an easy feat in the pitch dark sans a landmark. Thankfully after stop offs at various campsites on the way (and amidst invitations to a few tents), I secured an escort armed with two flashlights and Prince Charming led me to my castle and saw me stumble to my bed.
The sound did not disappoint and the bands fed off the crowds energy, reeling them in and resonating an orgy of frenzied movement.
All in all the river rocked and ebbed, with Saturday night peaking the festivities, Rock the River did indeed live up to its name sans the river part. With local talent strutting their stuff, the festival is a better way to usher in a sparkly New Year and bid adieu to the old one. 2012 New Year’s will certainly see me returning to rock in 2013, this time with a glow in the dark tent.

Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert Series hosted The Graeme Watkins Project and Plush on Sunday the 8th of January and the grass bank in front of the stage was packed as usual. After expecting to fry in the sun the cool cloud cover was appreciated by spectators. The Graeme Watkins Project started the concert off and their infectious energy quickly took over the crowd. The spot in front of the stage was taken over by their excited fans and there was even some screaming when Graeme reached down into the mini-crowd to touch some of their hands. It’s great to see a previous South African Idols contestant making use of the fame gained from the show by turning it into something creative, energetic and sustainable. Graeme told the crowd that he has ADD and although this can be a problem in other areas for other people, in the music industry and for him it’s more of an asset. The band’s energetic performance kept the crowd interested as they sang along to radio hits like ‘Bloodshot Eyes’ and clapped along to their less wellknown tracks. The crowd was reluctant to let The Graeme Watkins Project leave but once Plush started setting up the crowd gave them a warm welcome onto the stage. Rory Elliot’s huge smile and the bands feel-good music had the audience forgetting about their picnics and jamming along to some old and some new material. They kicked off their set with their latest single the catchy ‘Dancing in a Storm’. The band has also made a new addition with the multitalented Domenico Benigno on keyboard, accordion and a variety of other instruments. He was first spotted on their latest album release tour and is an interesting new addition to Plush. The quality of the sound at Kirstenbosch, as usual, did not disappoint and the bands and the audience t more Find ou walked away happy he about t after a great show in a on s t r conce beautiful venue on a !! 0 page 3 perfect Sunday evening. 27 January - 23 February 2012

WE NEED TORBOOK EVIE W TALK ABOUT WORDS KEVINANGELIQUE REDMOND Written by: Lionel Shriver
Your oldest child slaughters twelve innocent individuals in a single violent rampage, are you to blame? The richly layered novel by Lionel Shriver, We Need To Talk About Kevin, takes an honest unflinching look at parenthood. From married and carefree life to the transition of challenges that come as part of being a parent. The multilayered narrative uses letters written by Eva, the novels main character, to her estranged husband. Shriver asks whether a mothers dislike for a dark and menacing son can trigger the catastrophic events which alter Eva’s world forever. Sending her on the path towards understanding and acceptance for the role she played in creating a person who wants only her destruction. Winner of the Orange Prize in 2005, We Need To Talk About Kevin will change your perceptions on the dynamics of nature versus nurture and how society proportions blame. And while the novel has a movie counterpart, the movie is the fat free version of the novel; it boils the exquisite words of Shriver into a single view. This novel is a must-read.

There Are No Heroes is an intriguing sci-fi thriller set in a post nuclear fall-out Cape Town.
VISIT k.com/ faceboo no e therear While residents of the city suffer from radiation heroes poisoning, the monopolising conglomerate darCorp reigns supreme, as it supplies most of the jobs as well as the flow of ‘generics’ – the medication depended upon by all now to stay alive . The film follows Drew as she struggles to seek out a meagre existence in this grim reality for herself and her daughter, while her ex, Matthew, streams revolutionary video posts from his secret hide-out. As we watch Drew loses her job and thus also her monthly dose of generics, hope seems to flicker and fade. But when a strange man comes looking for Matthew, promising her medication in return, she is faced with the crux of a decision: betray the man she once loved, or take a bribe from a darCorp agent who could help make both her and her daughter well again? Reminiscent of The Matrix, this ominous film shows us a possible future rife with paranoia and terror, as well as an intriguing visual depiction of a whole mesh of

DUSTLAND EXPRESS Dustland Express’s EP offers its best on the first track, Castles in the Sky, with its enchanting oriental style. The EP manages to avoid monotony by alternating between dramatic tracks like Hurricane with its brass and strings and tracks like Glass Towers which is reminiscent of Shiny Toy Guns more mellow tracks minus the female vocals. The abundance of vocalists in the band is definitely their strong point. In addition to layered harmonies and intriguing melody lines they use their voices instrumentally. This is particularly prominent and effective on Castles in the Sky where vocalists take the place of lines usually occupied by violins. Overall the album is not groundbreaking but it is a great achievement for an EP and shows that we can expect great things from Dustland Express. 24

SHOTGUN TORI Shotgun Tori is a solo artist who returned to South Africa after spending 6 years in London. The intriguing album artwork of Shotgun Tori’s 5 track debut EP, are we fine yet, creates high expectations for the album. The upbeat skin you’re in starts the album off on a good note with its folk feel and rough harmonies. sweet weather carries a subtle seductiveness which brings artists like Anya Marina to mind. Overall are we fine yet is a simplistically beautiful and honest folk album. However, it doesn’t quite manage to offer something new or intriguing with regard to melodies and instrumentation to capture and maintain one’s interest for more than three or four listens.

FLASH REPUBLIC/ FOTO NA DANS Since the release of its debut, ‘Time Is Now’ in 2005 Flash Republic has been fleshing out a musical vision that is only just hitting its considerable creative stride. The past six years have seen the band hone a dance-driven sound that easily places it alongside similar top-drawer outfits around the globe. Foto na Dans was formed when vocalist Le Roi Nel joined Theuns, Dirkie, Neil and Alex, who previously played in a band together. It took seven years in and out of projects for the members to finally find the right combination. Foto na Dans is the result of creative self-expression that has not heeded to commercial influences, finding and establishing their own new significant sound in Afrikaans.

Since getting together over a jam session at a military base, Taxi Violence have gone on to stake their rightful claim as one of South Africa’s most prized independent rock acts, rocking crowds, winning awards and gathering a legion of ardent followers wherever their music is heard. With an attitude towards their music that shuns conventional record industry practices, the band have managed to single-handedly, and independently, achieve in a few years what a lot of bands don’t achieve in a lifetime. Machineri was formed in 2008 by Sannie Fox and Andre Geldenhuys. The band is a 3 piece including Daniel Huxham on drums and the sound is predominantly Blues-Rock. Sannie writes the songs and lyrics and borrows as much from literature and poetry as from real life and politics.

SAFE HOUSE
THE DARK KNIGHT RISES
We’ll all get to see this one in February. Denzel Washington plays a rogue CIA agent Tobin Frost, who stops off in a CIA safehouse as a prisoner, guarded by the inexperienced Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds). Suddenly rebels are storming the building and all hell breaks loose. It has a great cast, and the story line looks promising, but the reason all Cape Town resisdents need to view this film is the location the Mother City lends as the setting. Definitely the most high budget Hollywood film to ever have had the majority of the movie set in Cape Town.
July 2012 will mark the return of the Christopher Nolan Batman Trilogy. Since Batman Begins (2005). Nolan has recreated the franchise into a fan favourite once more, with The Dark Knight (2008) receiving critical acclaim, assisted by a mesmeric performance by the late Heath Ledger. The Dark Knight Rises will pick up 8 years after the death of Harvey Dent, which Bruce Wayne’s alter-ego Batman claimed responsibility for. Batman (Christian Bale) must now live with the reputation of a villain, as well as stopping madman ‘Bane’(Tom Hardy) from destroying the city and determining just what Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) is plotting. Don’t miss the final instalment in the series.

BURLESQUE DANCER The way in which we choose to express ourselves is so very important. To be able to exercise imagination and create is one of the few ways ultimate truth propagates, provided your intention is pure.
CONCEPT What is more inspiring than witnessing someone carrying out their craft with such a passion that you can’t help but be impressed? I like being inspired. That is what ‘The Creative’ is about – showcasing people that I meet, who I feel truly understand creativity and can carry out their art that is true to them, whatever their craft may be. It inspires me. Good work deserves reward and notice and this is what I’m trying to do. Promote creatives because I believe in their work and in doing so it inspires me. These are amazing people doing amazing things – find them and support them!
This next creative –the burlesque dancer- is not just a dancer. I know what some of you may think, but this Diva is no tacky go-go dancer. She is a choreographer, organizer, teacher and seamstress (responsible for the entire troupe’s wardrobe). She takes her ideas and inspirations and follows them until she has molded a show complete with other acts, dancing and costumes. She has taken her passion, which I suppose to many may seem a little different, and has nurtured it into The Black Orchid Beasties. Not only do they perform sexy, entertaining shows, but they also teach the art of burlesque to the interested. An amazing, hard working creative living her passion whilst teaching and sharing with others. Genuine people doing good things, isn’t that what it should all be about?

SHANI JUDES
Shani is an impressive street artist who has been involved in many interesting art projects on the streets - definitely someone to pay attention to leading up to the 2014 World Design Capital title!
IMAGES JONX PILLEMER
“...We are all artists in our own right. An accountant is an artist who uses numbers, a writer is an artist who uses words, a painter uses paint and my art is connecting, curating, & co-ordinating. Making projects happen.” Tell us about the street art projects you have been involved in? Over the last while I have had the opportunity to work on some pretty incredible street art projects. In June last year (2011) I got to work with world renowned French Artist JR’s team. We did large scale portraits in the city centre of Cape Town, this is where I learnt the method of large scale wheat pasting, which lead me to curate PASTE. I selected 18 artists to design work around the theme of Khayelitsha Culture, we then went onto pasting these in Khayelitsha and in the city centre. It was awesome to see what the artists came up with and subsequently one has been chosen for a very exciting award. More info to follow soon on SJ Artists Blog. Another great one last year was when I got to go to 6 different townships across South Africa with a pasting project for a new mobile application called Bozza. Bozza.mobi is a platform of content for local creative’s, music, video & poetry. And then one project which really is close to my heart was The Butterfly Art Project Paste. 70 children from Vrygrond got to make their own artworks which went up in the community to inspire and brighten up the space. See www.butterflyartproject.com. Next up, Im trying to get some funding to have some beautiful walls in Muizenberg painted, hopefully by the time you are reading this we would have one done already. Over the next couple of years with lead up to Design Capital, Im pretty sure that things on the street are going to get very busy. If they don’t then we know its because of the laws we face when doing public art. But I’m hoping things are going to change in our city to make art more accessible to the public.
“The current laws in Cape Town are not in favour of the artist and it does make street art projects difficult... but there are a few of us who are working with the city to try make the process easier for all involved” 36
URBANEDGEMAG.COM 27 January - 23 February 2012
How can one get involved in these types What has been your favourite project of projects? so far? Volunteers, artists, funders & sponsors are always needed. One doesn’t need to know much about street art to come on board. Most projects I work on need just hands to make things possible. Funding is always a great one. I try to make projects happen within the lowest budget possible, however we need to start realising that artists also need to pay rent, so funding is vital to make street art projects work.
Where do you draw your inspiration for ideas from? I get inspired by seeing all the different cultures that we have & the lack of colour in our city and its townships. Seeing how people interact with street art and how this medium inspires others. My inspiration comes from wanting to inspire. Often my projects lead on from each other, so I’ll do a project and it will give me ideas for the next one, it’s like rolling a ball and it picks up things along the way and the ball just keeps growing.
Mm I really do love all of the projects I am involved in, each one has its beauties. PASTE. was awesome to see the exchange and the difference of artwork go up in city and township. Bozza Pasting, for all the different townships I got to go to. Butterfly Art Project for the fact that the children got to create the work. So really each one is incredible and with each one comes many lessons and thats the most important to be able to move forward.
THE PLASTICS WORDS
NADINE VAN EEDEN IMAGES LAUREN WALLER IAN ENGELBRECHT Cape Town based band, The Plastics, have been around since late 2007 when the Righini brothers, lead singer and guitarist Pascal and drummer Sasha, joined up with Karl Rohloff on bass and Arjuna Kohlstock on lead guitar. Their first endeavor was a self-titled EP in 2007 and since then the band has released their acclaimed debut album Shark, shot four music videos of which two are regulars on MK, appeared in numerous publications in South Africa and have toured across the country amongst other things. They were also involved in the Woolworths ‘Roll with the Band’ campaign which was basically a campaign representing Cape Town, giving people a sneak peak into the behind the scenes life of a band. However, The Plastics have no intention of stopping here. They have just released a new version of the album Shark’s ‘Stereo Kids’ which is an unusual but interesting move. Whereas the old version was more ‘eerie and dark’ the new version ‘shows the dance element of the band’. It is a great summer road tripping track that will be playing over in your head for days so expect some strange looks as you groove along to it in the summer sun. The Plastics are currently working on their next album to be released later in 2012. They currently have three singles ready for release
HAVE YOU HEARD? POGO REMIX Nick Bertke, better known as Pogo on the web and in the music scene recordS sounds from his favourite games and movies and pieces them together like a jigsaw puzzle to create completely new music. His videos have collected over 40 million views on YouTube, and he has produced remixes for Disney Pixar, Microsoft, Showtime, the United Nations and more.
but they’re taking the writing process slowly rather than opting for a ‘rush-release’ so they are writing songs with the idea of deciding on the tracks which will appear on the album at a later stage. According to the band their new album is ‘quite a departure from Shark.’ So far the songs have a cleaner feel as opposed to Shark and they’ve tried out singing ‘3 part harmonies, with a fair amount of falsetto to give the songs a 60s feel.’ Reinvention is necessary in the music scene and The Plastics have not exempted themselves from this. Of this they said: ‘We want to always keep reinventing and moving forward… the new one is going to be difficult to compare to Shark.’ They are also planning on doing a fair amount of touring and are hoping to get onto the line-ups of some major festivals so make sure you catch them live.

UPCOMING BAND The season following Summer is not only known as Autumn, but comes in the form of five Afrikaans rockers known as Die Seisoen Na Somer. Students by day and rockstars by night, the Strand/Stellenbosch- based members of Die Seisoen Na Somer are prime examples of true musicianship: hard work being driven by passion. Lead singer Eurice van Zijl , Guitarists Tian Nel and Morne Hendriksz, Drummer Connie Myburgh and Bass Guitarist Dawie de Villiers started making music together in February 2008 and were baptized Die Seisoen Na Somer later that year.
“Die Seison Na Somer doesn’t just make music together, they do life together.” The years following, they opened for leading South African bands, drew the masses to their own gigs, had the opportunity to be part of the Reach For A Dream Foundation and became one of the biggest upcoming bands in the Western Cape. Even though they cannot be classified as a one-genre-band, they describe their sound as ‘heavy-happy-rocking-dance-moshingcrazy-vibes’. The five of them bring their own personal influences to the table to create what is known as Die Seisoen Na Somer, with the influences ranging from John Mayer (“red wine music” as described by Dawie) to Asking Alexandria, Staind and Day to Remember. Whenever you hang out with them (whether it’s after a gig, camping at Koeël Bay, or just chilling out at Bohemia) you get a sense of brotherhood: Die Seisoen na Somer doesn’t just make music together, they do life together. I sat down with them at Casa Del Sol in Strand after a local acoustic show: 38

BAND INTERVIEW Q: How did the name “Die SeisoennaSomer” originate? M: It is a lyric from one of our songs “Illusie van ‘n Vaderhart” (Illusion of a Father’s heart) D: I was having a hard week and while driving in the car I thought “You know what, this too shall pass. There’s always a season after summer.” C: Dawie was just being his old philosopher self… Q:Do you think English rockers will find it hard to listen to your tunes? E: We have a large ‘English following.’ They always say we break the “RooiRokBokkie” stereotype connected to Afrikaans music. C: We are melody-driven so it doesn’t really matter in which language we sing… M: …we could be singing in Chinese and it wouldn’t matter.
C: Yes! Definitely. What a humbling experience. The things we as musicians sometimes take for granted are the dreams of some of those terminally ill children. M: I’ll have to say the gig at Vlakvarkgat Fees in Langebaan. We had a gig in front of an audience of five people at 1:30am in the middle of winter. D: The other day when we viewed gig-footage of two years ago. It was amazing to see the progress and I couldn’t help but to think: “We were idiots way back when!” E: The night my zip was open when we gigged with Straatligkinders. Connie: Yep.That was a defining moment for the band.
Q:Give one word to describe the band member sitting on your right: E: Morne is clever. Very, very clever. M: Tian is talented. No wait, Tian is wet. [Laughing] T: Connie is a peace maker. Two words, I know. Q:How would you convince a person walking down the street to come to one of your shows? C: Dawie is a gentleman. D: There’s wine and there’s music. What more do D: Eurice is always up and down. He can never sit still. He is very eccentric. you want? Connie: If you want to dance, scream, mosh… M: ...and cry… C: …yes, and cry, come to our show. Q: With everyone being students, what drives you to keep making music? E: Fame and fortune… M: …yeah, right. D: Obviously it’s about the passion, but nothing beats making music alongside your best friends after a long week. Q:What was the single most amazing moment for Die Seisoen naSomer? T: The Reach For A Dream Project we had.
URBANEDGEMAG.COM 27 January - 23 February 2012
Q:What can Die Seisoen na Somer groupies look forward to? And most importantly, where can we download your music? (Preferably for free!) M: Aside from all the gigs, we are recording a few acoustic tracks in January. E: Our music is available on Facebook or you can just buy our EP (which is of course the waycooler thing to do).

and enjoy 15 TIPS ON HOW TO SURVIVE THAILAND Stories from two largely unprepared travellers and all the things they wished they’d known beforehand WORDS AND IMAGES KATE WHITFIELD I’ve always dreamed of going to Thailand. Sandy white beaches, palm trees, turquoise warm waters, etcetera etcetera. Finally, in October of 2011, a trip was on the cards. My fellow travelling partner-in-crime and I booked our tickets and packed our backpacks. Well, actually, we had a suitcase, which we traded in for trusty backpacks about twenty minutes before departing for the airport (we’ll call this a sidetip: bags on wheels may seem the easy option but when you’re on and off boats and traipsing through jungles and beaches they’ll help you like a hole in the head). Nineteen hours, two aeroplanes and four questionable meals later, we touched down in Bangkok. Exhausted and excited, we went forth into the wall of humidity and made our way towards the Kaoh San Road, ‘backpacker ghetto’ of Bangkok City. Into a taxi we jumped and sped along the busy roads, risking collision with taxis, tuk-tuks and pedestrians while the driver rambled on in broken English. Finally, we arrived at our backpackers, and as we opened the door were met by a barrage of Thai people offering us trinkets, accommodation, ping-pong shows (just say ‘mai’, meaning ‘no’ in Thai!) and tailor-made suits. We scuttled out of the cab, grabbed our things, and as the taxi sped away, a wave of cold horror swept over me: “Shit. The cameras”. Partnerin-crime darted off down the road in pursuit, while I did a quick calculation of what I’d lost: 3x cameras; 2x iPods; 1x cell phone; 1x South African passport. Needless to say, the taxi had disappeared and I was in a state. So here 40

it is, your TIP #1: When in any form of public transport, grab your phone, camera, travel book or any scrap of paper and take a picture or make a note of the taxi number or licence plate. I never saw my belongings again, nor had any hope of tracking the taxi down because I didn’t have this very important number, and we spent a long first weekend in Bangkok dealing with the Tourist Police and the South African Embassy. It wasn’t fun.
“A 45-minute push away from Koh Tao lies these two jungle-drenched outcrops connected by a strip of silky white sand and surrounded by crystal-perfect waters rich in marine life, everything from clownfish to barracudas and even reef sharks. It’s what people mean when they talk about paradise.”
populated road, only to come to a complete stop about three minutes later. Here is TIP #2: Get a map and know how far things are so you can negotiate a reasonable price. We didn’t make that mistake again. Not particularly deterred (as you can imagine, everything seemed entirely trivial after the Bangkok fiasco), we set about excitedly exploring the island. On the islands, if you’re comfortable driving a scooter (or have a mate to clutch onto), rent one and explore, your TIP #3: You’ll see things from an incredibly tangible point of view, and seeing the beauty of the jungles and beaches unfold in front of you is priceless. Of course, always wear a helmet because everyone drives like a maniac over there, and always check for scratches on the scooter beforehand and point them out to the rental guys so they don’t try to charge you for them later.
We spent the rest of the time on Koh Tao in absolute bliss – lazing on beaches, snorkelling (Koh Tao is also a major diving destination so if Anyway, fortunately for me, my partner-in-crime this is your thing it’s a must-see), drinking the is quite a nice character and forgave me my strong Thai beer and meeting amazing people. If foolishness rather quickly. We picked up a cheap you do go to Koh Tao there is one thing you can’t camera for holiday snapshots in Bangkok and miss, so I’ll make it your TIP #4: Rent a kayak made our way south to the islands. First stop: for the day and paddle over to Koh Nangyuan, Koh Tao. the island just nearby. A 45-minute push away from Koh Tao lies these two jungle-drenched We arrived to find another bombardment of men outcrops connected by a strip of silky white making their business off the tourism industry, sand and surrounded by crystal-perfect waters and were told by a very nice man that our resort rich in marine life, everything from clownfish was far too far to walk to, and he’d drive us to barracudas and even reef sharks. Next, well rested and nicely sunburned, we headed off to neighbouring Koh Pha-ngan – the party island. Instantly we knew exactly where we were: surrounded by a blur of neon pinks, yellows and greens adorning everything from people’s clothing to their footwear and make-up, we had clearly arrived in the land of the infamous full-moon, half-moon and blackmoon parties. Now, this next bit I’m going to call your TIP #5, but really it’s less of a tip and more of a clue, because to make this public knowledge would ruin why it’s so special, and if you manage to find it, then you really deserve it. Somewhere on this island there are two beaches, only accessible by boat, divided by a thin rocky outcrop. Beaches inhabited by men and women who came to Thailand and never quite felt the urge to leave, people who make their lives practising yoga and drinking coconuts. People who, on weekends, like to party really, really hard. The resort we found ourselves lazing about is your TIP #6: If you have a bit more money to spend when you’re in the party region of Koh Pha-ngan, stay in Milky Bay Resort on Ban Tai beach. We met up with three friends here and the five of us enjoyed four days of uninterrupted cocktails, delicious food (Thai and other), ocean swims and merriment. It was from here that we jumped into the taxi to take us to the halfmoon party in the jungle. Now, I wish I could give you some sound advice on what to do and what not to do to have a safe and fun party, but And party they do, a small intimate party unfortunately I woke up the next morning with beginning up in the jungle and finding its way a pounding headache and a significantly injured down to the beach as the afternoon creeps along. My partner-in-crime and I (who are quite thumb, so I wouldn’t listen to me. But I can tell you this much, your TIP #7: Do not, I repeat, do fond of partying, being Capetonians growing not drink too many buckets filled with strong up with our lovable trance parties) have never Thai whiskey and Red Bull! Also, don’t accept quite found anything as magical or completely odd-looking ‘milkshakes’ from anyone, even your hedonistic since. So I’ll say this: if you’ve found the sunrise beach, Eden isn’t too far away. I hope mates. Or do, it’s all about the ride I suppose. So, well hungover and completely partied-out, you find your way. On a less cryptic note, after we jumped onto a night boat and headed back to we left our little slice of heaven, we headed to another part of the island and thought we ought the mainland to catch our bus overland to Krabi (you’ll find all the information on how to get to check out one of the bigger parties, just for comparison’s sake. After a long day of snorkelling, walking, and climbing, head back to the mainland on your boat and treat yourself to a Thai-style foot-spa, your TIP #10: hundreds of tiny little fish that suck on your feet leaving them softer than a baby’s bum. It may sound weird and it feels completely creepy at first but it’s totally luxurious. Another thing to do in Krabi is an elephant trek. But be incredibly cautious, and this is your TIP #11: A lot of the elephants in Thailand are mistreated, overworked and deprived of shade and water for long portions of the day. Book your trek through your resort and ensure you find a company with anti-cruelty clauses. Google them if you aren’t sure, and report any unsavoury behaviour to the tourist police.
After recharging in Krabi we set off for our last destination, Koh Phi Phi. Now, here’s your TIP #12: I’d like to simply say that Phi Phi should be avoided entirely, but that wouldn’t really be fair, so I’ll say what I wish I knew: it is not a chilled island. Its tiny streets are mobbed by young tourists looking to party, accommodation is overpriced and beach bars pulsate with the kind of music and atmosphere not really suited to the slightly more seasoned traveller. managed to make the best of it but it wasn’t a highlight, especially after the magic of Krabi and the islands beforehand. We did manage to get ourselves a trip around the famous islands, saw where The Beach was filmed and witnessed a monkey attempt to maul a woman’s face for trying to pick up its baby, but on the whole we could’ve done without that particular stop.
As all the passengers sleepily sat up to see what was happening, the bus driver began to yell at us all to disembark: we had arrived. Our bags flung out onto the highway, stranded and lost, we were completely shell-shocked and abandoned. We had no idea where we were or how to get to the Kaoh San Road, the bus’s original destination. Fortunately a kind local man offered to pile us all on the back of his bakkie and drive us into town Still, when the time came to leave, we were all – not without a fee of course. However, when we too sad to say goodbye to the islands and make looked for our cash to pay our fare, we spotted our way back to Bangkok. But I had to collect my something: we had none. Looking deeper into temporary passport from the embassy and our our bags, it became clear that all of us on the bus flight was leaving in 48 hours, so off we set on an had been robbed blind: phones, watches, money, overnight bus. The bus was far less crowded than bankcards, jewellery, even clothes were gone. our previous trips and we managed to spread ourselves out nicely and get a good night’s sleep. Bangkok Shuffle’, and while it certainly isn’t enough to keep me from heading back for another holiday, it is worth guarding yourself against. TIP #14: is to remember that when in Bangkok, prepare yourself for everything, keep your belongings close and don’t let your guard down till you get to the islands or wherever you’re headed next. It’s a fascinating city but unfortunately riddled with poverty, and tons of wealthy tourists make for very easy targets. So, slightly bruised by the unfortunate bookends of our trip, but mostly relaxed, brown, happy and with a wealth of new experiences and friendships, we made our way back home. Every day since I’ve been back home I wish I could go back to Koh Tao and have a Thai green curry, or wander the backstreets of Koh Pha-ngan and indulge in a foot massage, or swim lazily in the warm water of Krabi. So, your final tip, TIP #15: is this: Don’t rush it, don’t look forward, don’t look back, enjoy it, soak it up, and remember it all. You’ll be longing to go back the moment your foot leaves the soil of tropical Thailand and is thrust back into reality.

U T H M AN SAMAAI Uthman Samaai (18) is currently the ‘centre’ for South Africa’s National Ice Hockey team. The fastest team sport in the world, Ice Hockey is the type of sport that stimulates you as a player and grips you as a spectator. WORDS URBAN EDGE MAG HOW DID YOU GET INTO ICE HOCKEY? My brothers were into roller hockey, so I used to play with them. One day a friend brought me to the ice rink when I was 10 and introduced me to ice hockey, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
HOW MANY PROVINCIAL ICE HOCKEY TEAMS ARE THERE IN SA? Well compared to rugby and soccer, ice hockey is seriously small in SA. We have three provinces that have teams, Western Province, Gauteng and KZN, so it’s like a mini tri-nations. Each province has 2 teams. WP has the A and B teams, Gauteng has the Miners and Scorpions and then KZN is also the A and B teams.
only finished 3rd in the 3rd division, which wasn’t what we were hoping for at all. The next year the competition was held in Cape Town and we just lost to Israel and came 2nd in division 3, which promoted us to division 2 where we’ll compete to try and stay. The divisions go Elite Division (where Canada, USA, Sweden etc play), Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3. So where getting there I guess.
AS AN ICE HOCKEY PLAYER, IT’S NOT EASY LIVING AT THE TIP OF AFRICA, BUT YOU IT’S KNOWN AS A ROUGH SPORT, DO MOST TRAVEL ALOT? GAMES FINISH WITH AN ICE PACK HANDY? Ah, travelings the best. I almost got kicked out of Yeah it can be brutal, but you condition your body to take the blows so you don’t feel the pain as much as someone trying out the sport would. I also make sure I wear a visor over my eyes which is connected to the helmet, cause getting a stick to the face is pretty common. Most games you finish with a cut or two around your face. We train 3 times a week as a team, and there’s also a gym in the ice station that we use. We also have a personal trainer that keeps us motivated to keep as fit as possible. She shouts a lot too, so it’s isn’t really a choice (laughs).
HOW IS THE SA ICE HOCKEY TEAM DOING ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE? Well when I first broke into the SA team my first tournament was the Ice Hockey World Champs in Armenia. We were well prepared but 44 URBANEDGEMAG 27 January - 23 February 2012
school cause we travel so much. Last year started off by us going to Mexico, came back for 2 days, then went off to Armenia, then back for a while, then Canada, then back for a bit again and then USA. So we get to see quite a bit of the world which I don’t complain about at all.
IS THERE A CURRENT PUSH TO PROMOTE ICE HOCKEY IN SA? We’re always trying. There’s a learn to play program to try and get kids in from an early age because it is quite an expensive sport, so kids are more likely to play it while their parents can finance it. Most guys stop playing when they have to pay for themselves. The youngsters also enjoy playing with their mates so it’s obviously more popular in the younger age group for that reason.
WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE YOURSELF IN THE FUTURE? Playing in the AHL, which is the league just below the NHL in North America. I have a friend playing in that league and I spoke to his coach the other day over the phone and he’ll give me a trial, so all I need to do is get on over to the States which I’m really excited about.
WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO SAY TO THOSE OF US WHO PARTAKE IN FIELD HOCKEY? Well I also played field hockey, and it’s the same concept, but so different. There’s not nearly the rush in field hockey that you get out of ice hockey. So if you want a faster, more adrenalinefilled, harder-hitting sport, then come on down to the ice station and give ice hockey a go.

KIMI RAIKKONEN Dubbed the ‘Ice-man’ due to his cool personality and his ability to shake off any pressure from critics and fellow drivers, Kimi Raikkonen will be returning to the world of Formula 1 this year after spending two years out of the sport trying his hand in the World Rally Championship. A previous World Champion with Ferrari in 2007, Raikkonen will be racing for the Lotus Renault Team, which isn’t expected to be as fast as the likes of Red Bull and McLaren, but with his supreme speed and ability to outdrive his own car, Kimi will definitely be someone to watch this year. He is also known as the party animal of the drivers in the paddock, which usually delivers some entertaining stories.

USAIN BOLT
With Blue Bulls legends such as Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha and Fourie du Preez all departing the franchise for new adventures, the door has been left open for the young hot shots to seize their opportunity as the new force in SA rugby. One significant change at the Bull Ring is the appointment of Pierre Spies as Captain. The big man’s performances have been criticized in recent times, with many believing he fails to put in the stand-out performances he once did. The pressure will be on as he has some fairly big boots to fill left by previous captain Matfield, and he’ll have the Bulls faithful scrutinising his every on, and off, field action. It’s a new era at Loftus, and Spies will be the man burdened with motivating his team-mates to continue the legacy.
We’ve already mentioned this super star in our Top 10, but couldn’t resist bringing him up again. All eyes at the 2012 London Olympics will surely be on the 6.5 ft Jamaican sprinter. A somewhat unknown entity at Beijing in 2008, Bolt is definitely set to be the most talked about athlete at this year’s Tournament. He’ll also be looking to beat his world records in the 100 and 200m sprints. He’s certain to have a lot of pressure riding on his shoulders, but when in the zone there isn’t a man or woman on earth that can keep up with the ‘Lightning Bolt’.

Ladies Tennis has been without a dominant force for some time now with both the Williams sisters suffering frequent injuries, and former world no. 1’s seemingly fading away. Perhaps this is the time for a new Steffi Graf to step up to the plate and claim her place in history.

GIVING YOUTH A NEW LEASE ON LIFE! “My focus and passion is every child on the planet, however, I know that if we do not empower our youth into the future caregivers, there will be no hope for the children.” Linzi Thomas – Co-Founder of Mylife. It’s cold and dark, your thin t-shirt offers you no protection from the wind and rain. Even as you huddle closer to the doorway, your only ally at night. A cardboard box is your bed and the bathroom is an alley nearby. Drugs are what your body wants, they numb the pain, the cold and the desperate craving for love, for a smile, an acknowledgement that you exist. An estimated one hundred and fifty million kids are living in these conditions right now, and about twelve million of them are in Africa. Cape Town is known as the mother city, but if we are the mother city, why are so many of our children living in unacceptable conditions. So what is driving children as young as seven towards a life of destruction which often ends in death or prison? South Africa is the world leader in Aids orphans, a staggering number of children are orphaned daily, coupled with drugs, poverty, a lack of education and cycles of domestic violence – the youth face a bleak future. Many children find the street an escape from living conditions that are unstable and emotionally and physically abusive. The ‘cycle of destruction’ these youths find themselves in, unless broken, will lead to a 433% increase in the number of children living on the streets in the next ten years. This is the future of South 48
Africa; the children we raise today will lead the nation tomorrow. While the South African Police, particularly those in the centre of Cape Town will tell you how bad the dynamic is right now, with drugs like Tik on the streets, the problem in the last few years has taken on a darker tone. The SAPS do their jobs; they have seen the children going from childhood to adulthood, in and out the cells. When I enquired about the issue of gangs and street children Linzi explained almost all the kids on the streets have experienced gangsters. With almost two hundred and eighty thousand gang members in this province, and children going through the judicial system, the gangs offer security, money and leadership which are leading them straight into the dark. The children are still cute and able to earn money panhandling, but the older you get the harder life is.
Most of the youths on the street have an average spend of one thousand six hundred rand a week, the bulk of the money going towards drugs.

Most of the youths on the street have an average spend of one thousand six hundred rand a week, the bulk of the money going towards drugs. A scary thought when you imagine an eight year old living on the street – an eight year old that is addicted to drugs. Prostitutes themselves are involved with gangs and handles guns. That eight year old will grow up and influence the next generation and so the cycle continues. A society fears that which it cannot understand, and one woman understands this all too well.
If people like Linzi and foundations like Mylife and The Western Cape Street Children’s Forum didn’t exist who would do the work no-one else wants to do? Linzi Thomas has dedicated the last fourteen years of her life towards understanding the children society forgot, to understand the hopelessness in our society that is driving children as young as seven years into a vicious cycle of destruction which will end in death or prison. Linzi went from film production to a registered section 21 charity, Mylife, a dynamic
youth development organization with a vision for the future of South Africa. The organization “takes marginalized and addicted youth and children and provides them with a second chance through a proven process of healing, life skill development, counselling, and education which gives them back their rightful place in society”. For Linzi, the daily view of children being abused kick-started a process of change which would lead her to start Street Universe, a charity based on a twenty- four hour presence on the street, seven days a week, to understand the children and the process by which lead them there. After three years of working on the streets Linzi gained a view of the dynamics which lead a child to fall into the cycle of destruction, how they impacted society and how society impacted them. When the organization was nominated as a beneficiary of the Laureus Sport for Good Awards, Wiseman Dinizulu accompanied Linzi to Monte Carlo. Wiseman went from the streets of Cape Town and crack cocaine to being acknowledged as a human being and an ambassador for the children still on the streets. He is now a HOD in the film industry, a wellrespected industry member, newly married and a child on the way. Even though Linzi was told repeatedly that Wiseman was one person who would never reintegrate, her stubborn refusal
Mylife is showing the world through its past successes and future goals that change is possible and hardened youth can have a positive impact on society. to walk away from any child in need led her to take Wiseman into her own home. A home which over the first four years of her journey on the street saw a hundred and eighty people come through the doors. Children that had been raped or stabbed , “it didn’t matter if the guy was 40 and a gangster from the street or if he was 12, I still took them home cause I couldn’t stand by and watch them be abused. It just was too much for me”. But understanding the problem and the reasons behind the life of children on the street is not enough. “So for me as a film producer let’s prevent and avoid rather than wait and then salvage”. Mylife became the next step for Linzi. She resigned from her own charity and created Mylife with Wiseman and Wesley Thomas, Linzi’s son, this non-profit and non-government organization have managed to take 350 children off the streets of Cape Town. valuable members of the community, many of them have become renowned in their own arena and many are still active members and run the Mylife Foundation. Linzi has certainly had success but at what price? Linzi talks openly about her lack of relationships, “I wanted to put every bit of time and energy into understanding every last facet of what I was dealing with”. Her life is centred on the children society doesn’t acknowledge. Her own child, Wesley pushed her to do more – from the age of twelve he was cooking dinner for abused, damaged children, sharing his belongings and home with them. One night Linzi vividly recalls, “it became normal I will never forget one night I had a kid he overdosed on crack and he was 7 years old, and I was in red cross children’s hospital with him and they were telling me that his heart was basically double its size”. The little boy taken to the hospital that night has since died despite exhaustive efforts by the CID social development department to keep him alive. If people like Linzi and foundations like Mylife and The Western Cape Street Children’s Forum didn’t exist who would do the work no-one else wants to? As Linzi explains, “how do we stand up when not enough people in this country 50

The reason I’m here is unconditional. I know my purpose in life”. That purpose is the eradication of teen homelessness and Linzi has been working towards this goal, which is now being realised through the Mylife Village. Initially based in Cape Town centre The Mylife Foundation has since moved out of the city last June and is now focused on a youth development model that trains the youth to be the caregivers of the children labelled by society, the youth in the programs range from matric students to academics, The Village represents hope, instead of selling people reality which they refuse to face, Linzi offers them hope, to inspire people to be a part of changing the plight faced by the youth on

It will be the first green village, and will have a train – the – trainer mentality, centring on skills development, individual healing, sustainability, new community creation and training the mentors and future leaders of South Africa. The outcome of this project is independent young people who are role models and mentors for the future. Through the outreach programs Mylife continues to engage youth and identify those who choose to take the next step and become the mentors and leaders of the future, both in its village and back in the cities and towns of South Africa.
