UU AMONGST 6 SCHOOLS FORMING NEW NCAA D-II CONFERENCE

CEDARVILLE, Ohio (Oct. 17, 2011) - Presidents of the newly formed athletic conference, featuring six NCAA Division II colleges and universities from Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio, have announced the conference will be named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC).

The six member institutions include: Cedarville University (Cedarville, Ohio); Central State University (Wilberforce, Ohio); Kentucky Wesleyan College (Owensboro, Kentucky); Trevecca Nazarene University (Nashville, Tennessee); Urbana University (Urbana, Ohio); and Ursuline College (Pepper Pike, Ohio). The new conference will begin competition in the fall of 2013, pending approval from the NCAA. The G-MAC would become the NCAA's 24th Division II conference. Currently Kentucky Wesleyan holds membership in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Urbana and Central State are associate members in the GLVC for football only, and the other three Ohio schools currently compete as Division II independents. The Presidents issued a joint statement saying, "The Great Midwest Athletic Conference reflects the membership of similar institutions with parallel academic and athletic philosophies and resources. The geographical reference in the Conference's name represents the connection to NCAA Division II's Midwest region." The league administrators have been working diligently to create the structure needed to form a conference that will be desirable to other Midwest regional colleges and universities with similar philosophies. Expansion beyond the original six will be a priority moving forward. The CEO's added, "We believe the G-MAC will become the model NCAA Division II conference with our principal focus on the student-athlete experience - including academic success, social development, athletic performance, and character development."

URBANA UNIVERSITY EXPECTS

2011-12

Last year's 9-win season fell short of expectations for a program on the rise in Division II A season ago, the Urbana University men's basketball program was riding high. The Blue Knights were coming off the program's first winning season in 13 years, and Urbana was eligible for the NCAA Division II post-season tournament for the first time in school history. Third-year Head Coach Jeff Porter went for broke and put together the toughest schedule in program history. Porter hoped to land a few key upsets early, earning respect and crucial regional points on the way to a surprising post-season berth, but his ambitious plan fell apart early.

player, was named the team's most improved player by the coaching staff last spring. Dolson led the Blue Knights in shooting, knocking down 56.4% of his attempts from the floor. Dolson showed flashes of brilliance in the paint, including a 27-point, 13-rebound performance against Central State University, a team coming off a post-season berth as a Midwest region independent. Senior power forward Rob Matthews (Delaware, Ohio/Hayes HS) also returns to patrol the paint for his fourth year under Porter. The 6-5, 230 pound Matthews started 4 games for the Blue Knights last winter, and he already has 70 games of experience at Urbana under his belt.

The team was loaded with experienced veterans, but they lacked experience playing together. Four of the top six scorers were new to the program last season. Five of the six were talented transfers who spent the majority of their careers at other institutions. It took time for the team to build chemistry and consistency, and just as the team began to gel, the season came to a close. Senior shooters Stefon Perry (Paducah, KY) and Nate Wigal (Zanesville, Ohio/Sheridan HS) will be counted on once again Urbana ended their year on a 5-game winning streak, entering to provide points in a hurry from the perimeter. Perry, a 6-5 the off-season with renewed optimism and six seniors and a wing, made 7 starts in his rookie campaign with Urbana after junior who all had at least a year of experience on the same transferring from Lake Land Community College. SEASON OUTLOOK

The team opened the season with seven straight road games, including two against D-I opponents Kent State and Cleveland State, and three more against tournament teams from Urbana's Midwest region. The Blue Knights started 1-7. The team's lone win came on the road against an Indianapolis squad that knocked off D-I Tennessee in the pre-season, but the respect and regional points slipped away with each additional loss.

SEASON OUTLOOK

Providing depth at guard are sophomore transfers Josh Brown (Millington, TN) and Danny Goins. Brown is a talented ball handler and shooter from Indiana Tech. Goins transferred to Urbana from Grace College before last season, but he sat out the season as a redshirt. He is the nephew of Urbana AllAmericans Wade and Wyatt Goins. The Goins' brothers were inducted into the UU Hall of Fame in 2002. Danny's connections to the Blue Knights don't stop there. He also played high school ball for 2009 UU Hall of Fame inductee Donnie Gillespie at Winton Woods High School in Cincinnati. Gillespie was named an NAIA All-American in 1997, the last year Urbana earned a post-season berth. Casey Baker figures to be the only true freshman to log significant minutes this season for the Blue Knights. The 6-4 guard/forward comes to Urbana after scoring over 2,000 career points at Conneaut Valley High School in Conneautville, Pennsylvania. Coach Porter and the Blue Knights hope to begin this season the way they finished last year. Urbana already delivered a scare in the exhibition season at D-I EKU. Urbana eventually fell 70-59, but the Blue Knights trailed by just five points with less than three minutes to play. Porter's squad will get another shot at a D-I opponent in the regular season finale when the Blue Knights travel to Chicago State University on February 25th. The team opens its regular season on Saturday, November 12th at Mercyhurst College. The home opener comes two days later on Monday, November 14th against Edinboro University. Urbana finished 0-4 in four tightly contested games with those same opponents last season, so any improvements made this past off-season could pay immediate dividends. In addition to those match-ups, Coach Porter and the Blue Knights are also looking forward to competing in their first post-season tournament since 2006. Six NCAA D-II independent Ohio institutions, including Urbana, Notre Dame, Cedarville, Central State, Walsh and Malone, have entered a scheduling agreement to play each other in the regular season. Then, following the regular season, the six teams will be seeded for a post-season tournament. The regular season champion will host the semi-finals and finals on March 2-3. A win in this tough tournament could be just the thing to push Urbana's regional ranking high enough to attain the program's first invitation to the NCAA D-II Championships in late March.

HEAD COACH JEFF PORTER Jeff Porter was named the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Urbana University on March 21, 2008, one month after the Blue Knights' wrapped up their final season as a member of the NAIA. Porter immediately took the reigns of a program in the process of transitioning to NCAA Division II. Over the threeyear transition, Porter guided the Blue Knights to 29 wins, including five straight to wrap up the squad's first season as a full-fledged NCAA D-II program. On the day he was introduced as the new head coach, Porter announced, "I feel like Urbana is a good fit for me. In this basketball program, I can make a positive contribution toward developing the lives of Urbana's student-athletes for many years to come." "I really like the direction Urbana is taking; going to NCAA D-II is a big step for this program," Porter added.

Prior to coming to Urbana, Porter served as the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Mercyhurst North East. a two-year junior college in North East, Pennsylvania. Porter led the Saints to a 19-9 record in his first year as the head coach. His Saints, comprised of just two returning players, finished second in the Western New York Athletic Conference. That squad proved to be the highest scoring team in school history as it averaged 90.5 points per game. The Saints were rewarded with a second seed and first round bye in the NJCAA Region III Division II Tournament. Porter led the Saints to the championship game where they fell to Monroe.

COACH PORTER

Porter made great strides in his first season at the helm of the program. The Blue Knights improved their overall win total, despite playing a tougher D-II schedule that featured just 6 home games and 21 contest away from the Warren G. Grimes Center. The team improved as the season progressed, winning four out of five games to open up play after the holiday break in 2009. The team's late-season success carried over to Porter's second year. Urbana opened the 2009-10 season winning seven of their first nine contests, including a pair of wins over nationally ranked opponents. The Blue Knights finished 14-13, posting the program's first winning season in 13 years. The 8-win turnaround was the second largest single year turnaround in the program's 45-year history.

In three seasons at Mercyhurst North East, Porter posted a 58-30 record, twice taking the Saints to the NJCAA Region III Finals. Porter was also an adjunct professor for the sports management department at MNE. Before taking over as head coach of the Saints, Porter spent two seasons as an assistant coach at MNE. He also served as the head cross country coach. In 2003-04, MNE won its first ever men's basketball WNYAC championship and finished the season 23-6. In 2004-05, the Saints finished with an overall record of 21-8. Prior to his stint at MNE, Porter served as an assistant coach at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania during the 2002-03 season. He has also worked various summer camps in the state of Pennsylvania. The Kittanning, PA native graduated from Geneva College in 2001 with a degree in Psychology. While at Geneva, he played for the Golden Tornadoes and was part of a squad that played in the championship game of the NCCAA national tournament. In 2003, Porter earned his Master's Degree in Sports Studies/Management at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Jeff is the son of Mark and Christine Porter of Worthington, Pennsylvania. He resides in Urbana with his wife, Stephanie. 5

VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT TOM AMLIN Tom Amlin joined the Blue Knight Coaching Staff prior to the 2010-11 season as a volunteer assistant. Amlin previously coached for four seasons at Circleville Bible College, now Ohio Christian University, in Circleville, Ohio. During the 199394 season, Amlin led CBC to a third place showing in the NCCAA national tournament. The former Urbana University student and current Urbana resident presently presides as the Senior Pastor at the Church of Christ in Christian Union in Bellefontaine, Ohio.

CARING KITCHEN

URBANA, Ohio (April 27, 2011) - The Urbana University men's basketball team spent a day volunteering their services at the Urbana Caring Kitchen on Tuesday. As a part of the team's community service project, members of the team and coaching staff helped pack backpacks full of goodies for 215 local children. The Blue Knights also spent time helping load and re-stock the back storage room, as well as prepare meals for more than 50 people on Tuesday. Some of the participating team members are pictured below enjoying their time at the Caring Kitchen.

URBANA, Ohio (July 21, 2011) - The Urbana University men's basketball team recently donated a care package to the Army's 329th Medical Company, which is currently stationed in Kuwait. Members of the team put together a package containing toiletries, food, books, and activities such as sudoku puzzles for the troops to enjoy during their service overseas. "The care package was designed to show our support for the troops," explained Head Men's Basketball Coach Jeff Porter. "We wish we could do more to help them out as they fight for our country, but in the meantime, we wanted to show our appreciation with a care package. The team understands that our day-to-day lives would not be the same if not for the troops risking their lives for us to carry on playing basketball and receiving a college education."

Muhammad Jr. Makes NCAA Division II All-Independent Third Team HOLLY, Michigan (May 11, 2011) - Urbana University junior forward Sharif Muhammad Jr. (Brooklyn, NY/ South Shore HS) earned his first NCAA Division II All-Independent Team selection this week as he was named to the Third Team by Independents' Collegiate Athletics Association (ICAA) Director Mike Bond. The ICAA consists of 7 NCAA Division II institutions who competed as Independents during the 2010-11 school year. These 7 institutions include Washington Adventist University, Palm Beach Atlantic University, North Greenville University, Central State University, Oakland City University, the University of the District of Columbia, and Urbana. After transferring to Urbana from Raritan Valley Community College where he was named a Third Team JUCO All-American last season, Muhammad Jr. averaged 10.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game for the 9-17 Blue Knights. He led the team in blocked shots, averaging 1.4 per game, and he shot 44.9% from the field and 42.3% from behind the arc. Muhammad Jr. also had a knack for getting to the free throw line, leading the team in free throws attempted despite missing 5 games. Muhammad Jr. reached double figures scoring or rebounding in 15 of his 21 games. The Blue Knights also landed a player on the All-Independent First Team for the third consecutive season under the direction of Head Coach Jeff Porter. Sophomore guard/forward Rob Wilson (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro HS) earned First Team honors for the second year in a row after averaging a team-best 15.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. Wilson shot 47.5% from the field, 41.7% from behind the arc and 88.1% from the charity stripe. Wilson was also named the Independent Freshman of the Year last season. The 2010-11 Independent Player of the Year, Paul Harrison from North Greenville, just barely bested Wilson with averages of 18.2 points and 8.6 rebounds on 61.8% shooting for the 22-7 Crusaders.

2010-11 AWARD WINNERS

Urbana finished 3-1 vs. D-II Independents this past season. Their only loss came in a 109-105 loss at Central State in overtime. Urbana also defeated NAIA Independent Lourdes College and a pair of former D-II Independents from Ohio Dominican and Lake Erie College.

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (July 12, 2011) - A trio of Urbana University men's basketball players were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) 2010-11 Honors Court this week. Juniors Anthony Gage (East Sparta, Ohio/Glen Oak HS), Nate Wigal (Zanesville, Ohio/Sheridan HS), and Ramel Mitchell (Akron, Ohio/Firestone HS) were amongst a group of NCAA Division I, II, and III varsity men's basketball players who achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 or higher following the 2010-11 school year. The NABC Honors Court recognizes the talents and gifts that these men possess off the court, and the hard work they exhibit in the classroom.

UU Hall of Fame to Induct Former Basketball Stars Boysel & McBride in February Induction ceremony to take place after UUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home basketball doubleheader on Saturday, February 4th, 2012 URBANA, Ohio (July 12, 2011) - Today, a pair of Blue Knight athletic pioneers were announced as the 34th and 35th selections to be inducted into the Urbana University Athletic Hall of Fame. Seventies standouts Brian Boysel and Mary (Jenkins) McBride will be honored and enshrined together during an induction ceremony on Saturday, February 4th, 2012 after a Blue Knight men's and women's basketball doubleheader. Dave Ross, a 1976 graduate of Urbana and current University Trustee and Hall of Fame Chairman, administered the nomination and selection process. "Both Brian and Mary were nominated just this year, and we thought it was a good fit to induct them together," explained Ross. "We anticipate a large group of 1970's alumni attending the induction."

2011-12 HALL OF FAME

Unlike past inductions, which have taken place after the Homecoming football game, this year's ceremony was shifted to the Blue Knights basketball season in order to spotlight Boysel and McBride's contributions on the court during a time of tremendous growth for the Urbana athletic programs. Boysel was a three-year starter at forward for the Blue Knights during the mid '70s. Under future UU Hall of Fame coach Bob Cawley, Boysel excelled on the court. As a senior, Boysel averaged better than 20 points per game to go along with nearly seven rebounds per contest. The 6'3" Greenon High School product led the team in shooting, knocking down nearly 55% of his attempts from the field. He ended his career fifth, and still remains 14th on Urbana's all-time scoring list with 1,419 points. After his playing career ended at Urbana, Boysel left for a full-time position at Grimes Manufacturing, where he has remained for 32 years. In 2002, Boysel returned to Urbana University, changed his major and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Business in 2004. "Brian was a great player who came up big in big games," remembers Ross. "We were impressed that he returned to UU to finish his degree in 2004, which also made him eligible for a Hall of Fame nomination." McBride, a 1978 graduate, enrolled at Urbana during the developmental stages of women's athletics at the college. As a freshman, she played for some of the first volleyball and women's basketball teams to don the Royal Blue and White. When the athletic department added softball in 1976, McBride joined that team as well, becoming one of the first females to earn three varsity letters during a single school year. In all, the Ansonia native earned ten varsity letters at Urbana before graduating with a degree in education. She later taught and coached at Triad and Tri-Valley High Schools in Ohio, as well as Brighton High School in Colorado. Before retiring from coaching in 1998, McBride compiled a 240-73 overall record as a varsity volleyball coach at Triad and Brighton. Ross adds, "Mary was one of the school's first successful multi-sport student-athletes during the early years of Urbana women's intercollegiate athletics. After graduation, she enjoyed a fine career in both teaching and coaching." The induction of Brian Boysel and Mary (Jenkins) McBride will take place following a Blue Knights' men's and women's basketball doubleheader on Saturday, February 4th, 2012. The women's team will take on Lindenwood University at 1:00 p.m. followed by the men's game against Malone University at 3:00 p.m. The induction ceremony is scheduled to begin about 30 minutes after the men's game in the Urbana University Student Center. Chris Anders was named Sports Information Director in June of 2008. He was promoted to Asst. A.D. of Media Relations in June of 2011. He oversees & organizes the publicity of the University’s 15 intercollegiate athletic programs. He’s also responsible for the production of all athletic publications, including media guides, game-day programs & press releases. In addtion, he manages sports.urbana.edu & the athletic department’s social media sites.

Dr. Jim Judge is in his fourth year as the Faculty Athletic Representative at Urbana University. Dr. Judge is an associate professor in the Education and Allied Professions College at Urbana. Jennifer Frey, MA, ATC, a native of Marysville, joined Carrie Henry joined the Blue Knight athletic training the UU athletic training staff as the assistant athletic staff in March of 2010. Carrie came to Urbana from trainer in August of 2006. She earned her Bachelor of NovaCare Rehabilitation in Cincinnati, Ohio. Prior to Science degree in Athletic Training from Wright State working for NovaCare, Carrie earned her Master's University in 2003. She holds a Master’s of Art in Degree in Education with a sports science emphasis from Education from Cumberland University in Tennessee, Defiance College in May of 2008. She received her which she earned in 2005. She was employed at Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from Cumberland University as an athletic trainer before California University of Pennsylvania in 2006. Originially, coming to Urbana. Carrie is from northeast Ohio. Jassen Dobyns, BS, ATC, joined the Blue Knight athletic training staff in 2004. He was promoted to Head Athletic Trainer in 2006. He earned JASSEN DOBYNS his Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine from Wilmington College. HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER He is also a Certified Personal Trainer.
