UU ANNOUNCES MOVE TO MOUNTAIN EAST CONFERENCE URBANA, Ohio (August 23, 2012) - The presidents of 12 universities, 9 in West Virginia, 2 in Ohio, and 1 in Virginia, jointly announce the formation of a new all-sports collegiate athletic conference to be named the Mountain East Conference (MEC). The new 12-team league’s charter membership will include: Concord University (W.Va.), Fairmont State University (W.Va.), Glenville State College (W.Va.), Notre Dame College (Oh.), Shepherd University (W.Va.), The University of Charleston (W.Va.), The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, Urbana University, West Liberty University (W.Va.), West Virginia State University, Wheeling Jesuit University (W.Va.), and West Virginia Wesleyan College. "We are extremely pleased to announce the formation of the Mountain East Conference,” stated spokesperson Reid Amos on behalf of the 12 presidents of the new alliance. “The goal of this effort has been to align like-minded institutions with similar budgets and goals across a regional footprint. We strongly believe that our charter membership creates a solid foundation that provides mutual benefit and secures the athletic future for our institutions. We will collectively make every effort to provide a high-quality experience for our student-athletes in Mountain East competition.” The Mountain East Conference intends to commence competition for the 2013-14 academic year, but will remain active with their current conference affiliations until such time that they would be able to compete as a conference within the NCAA. The move will not affect any athletic schedules for 2012-13. With current sports sponsorship, the Mountain East Conference will meet the NCAA requirement for a conference championship in 16 sports, including: Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Football, Men’s and Women’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Softball, Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Men’s and Women’s Track, and Volleyball. The West Virginia institutions are currently members of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC), UVa-Wise and Urbana were slated to compete in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) beginning in 2013, and Notre Dame is an NCAA Division II Independent competing in 5 of its 22 sports as an affiliate member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). UVa-Wise has been accepted into the NCAA membership process and will compete within NCAA Division II in 2013 while pursuing full membership; the other 11 schools are all NCAA Division II members.

NEW LOOK BLUE KNIGHTS SET SIGHTS ON CONFERENCE TITLE Talented Transfers Hope to Help UU Make its Mark in the G-MAC For the first time in five seasons, the Urbana University men's basketball team will play for a conference championship this winter. Fifth-year Head Coach Jeff Porter has been busy building a championship-caliber program since taking over the reigns in 2008, and finally, after three years in transition to NCAA Division II and two more as a lonely independent, Porter's program can fulfill its championship intentions. Urbana will compete in the four-team Great Midwest Athletic Conference for one season before moving onto the twelve-team Mountain East Conference in 2013. The G-MAC is stacked with basketball-rich programs like Cedarville, Central State and Trevecca Nazarene, so the Blue Knights have a tough road ahead if they plan to contend coming off a 9-19 season.
A hot team late in the season could decide the conference champion this year. Urbana's entire G-MAC slate is played after the holiday break, and before conference play begins, the Blue Knights will again cut its teeth against one of the toughest non-conference slates in the country. Urbana opens the season against preseason #1 West Liberty University. In fact, three of their first four games are at D-II powerhouses and tournament teams from last season.
SEASON OUTLOOK
On the surface, Urbana may appear to be the conference underdog. The Blue Knights' nine wins last season hardly stack up against Cedarville's 23, Trevecca's 22 and Central State's 19. However, Urbana has fared well against its new conference foes. The Blue Knights have taken two of the last three against Central State, and the team defeated Trevecca Nazarene the last time the two programs met during the 2004-05 campaign. Cedarville dropped Urbana in all three meetings last season, but the margin of victory dropped from 20 to 12 to just 3 points in their final meeting at Cedarville in the semifinals of the D-II Ohio Independents' Championships. Urbana won the meeting before The Blue Knight veterans have grown accustomed to facing the last year's three-game set, when Cedarville was ranked 18th in best of the best year after year. Team captain and two-year the country. vet Ramel Mitchell has earned a reputation for raising his game to another level against Urbana's stiffest competition. Mitchell Recent history has proven that the Blue Knights know how to peak scored a game-high 17 point and calmly sank the final four free at the right time under Coach Porter. Two seasons ago, Urbana throws in the last 11 seconds of Urbana's 59-55 upset at Chicago ended the year on a 5-game winning streak after starting the State last February. A week before that, he poured in a careerseason 4-17 against a brutal D-II independent schedule. Urbana high 33 points that included four more free throws in the final 28 again finished strong last season, ending the year on a 4-3 spurt seconds in an OT win over Salem International. The senior guard that included a pair of buzzer-beater wins and a 59-55 road has been a consistent double-digit scorer over his 2-year Urbana victory over NCAA D-I Chicago State. career. Mitchell was the fourth leading scorer on last year's squad at 10.1 points per game. The top three scorers were seniors Shariff Muhammad Jr., Marcus Pearl and Dyrell Dolson. The trio's departure leaves Porter trying to replace three starters and about 36 points per game. Junior guard Danny Goins proved to be a prolific scorer off the bench for Urbana last season. In about 17 minutes per game, Goins finished fifth on the team in scoring, averaging 7 points per game. Another junior guard, Josh Brown, made 13 starts for Urbana, averaging 5 points per game. Both Goins and Brown were terrific from behind the arc, shooting 46% and 36%, respectively. Mitchell also connected on 36% of his attempts from downtown last season. He is a career 38% shooter from behind the arc.
Urbana faced a similar schedule a year ago, opening the season 3-7 against four tournament teams and three more that won 26 or more games. By the end of the year, the Blue Knights were under .500, but they were battle-tested. Their 4-3 finish included three wins over teams that had defeated them earlier in the season, and the fourth win was the first in school history over a D-I opponent. Urbana's final five losses were to teams that averaged Three more Blue Knights return this season after making starts in 24 wins. their first season at UU in 2011-12. Junior Dusan Komljenovic

started 11 games at forward. Senior Branden Woods appeared in 25 games, making 1 start at forward, and sophomore guard/ forward Casey Baker returns after missing the final 16 games of his freshman season with a broken foot. Together, the rookie trio averaged about 7 points and 9 rebounds per contest. Senior Christian Moore (24 games, 2.5 ppg), sophomore Rendijs Gzibovskis (10 games, 2.1 ppg) and sophomore Ian Wimberly (5 games) also return this season after seeing action in 2011-12.
SEASON OUTLOOK
Assisting with the transition is Porter's most talented incoming class in five seasons. Senior Armond Battle transferred into the program from Wright State, where he spent the past two seasons starting for the Raiders. The 6-6 guard averaged 7 points and 4 boards for the 13-19 Raiders. Another transfer with D-I experience is junior forward C.J. Reid. Reid played a season at St. Peter's College before earning All-Region honors at Jamestown Community College last year. Reid averaged 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists during his sophomore season at JCC. The incoming talent also includes a pair of Serbian big men. Sixfoot-eight power forward Ognjen Rebic appeared in eight games for tournament-bound St. Cloud State last season, and seven-foot freshman center Andrej Tomic hails from the same Serbian city as sophomore teammate Dusan Komljenovic. The Serbian trio will provide the Blue Knights with a size advantage they have not often had recently. Other newcomers who may contribute this season include guards Derrick Sanderfer Jr., Marques Greene, Anthony Capuano, and Evan Blackwell. Sanderfer Jr. sat out last season at Urbana after transferring from Owens Community College. Greene is a freshman from Xenia High School. Capuano comes to Urbana from Wheeling Jesuit, and Blackwell is an all-state prep player from East Detroit who just played a one-year stint at Henry Ford Community College. Urbana opens the season on November 9th against #1 West Liberty at the Don Callan Classic hosted by Cedarville University.

HEAD COACH JEFF PORTER Jeff Porter was named the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Urbana University on March 21, 2008, one month after the Blue Knights' wrapped up their final season as a member of the NAIA. Porter immediately took the reigns of a program in the process of transitioning to NCAA Division II. Over the three-year transition, Porter guided the Blue Knights to 29 wins, including five straight to wrap up the squad's first season as a fullfledged NCAA D-II program. On the day he was introduced as the new head coach, Porter announced, "I feel like Urbana is a good fit for me. In this basketball program, I can make a positive contribution toward developing the lives of Urbana's student-athletes for many years to come." "I really like the direction Urbana is taking; going to NCAA D-II is a big step for this program," Porter added. Porter made great strides in his first season at the helm of the program. The Blue Knights improved their overall win total, despite playing a tougher D-II schedule that featured just 6 home games and 21 contest away from the Warren G. Grimes Center. The team improved as the season progressed, winning four out of five games to open up play after the holiday break in 2009.
Since then, Porter's Blue Knights have strung together back-to-back 9-win seasons, finishing 9-17 in 2010-11 and 9-19 in 2011-12. The 2011-12 squad finished on a roll, winning 4 of 6 games at the end of the season including the program's first win over an NCAA Division I opponent (@ Chicago State) and a first round buzzer-beating, upset win over 4-seed Malone in the first round of the NCAA D-II Ohio Independents' Championships. Prior to coming to Urbana, Porter served as the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Mercyhurst North East. a two-year junior college in North East, Pennsylvania. Porter led the Saints to a 19-9 record in his first year as the head coach. His Saints, comprised of just two returning players, finished second in the Western New York Athletic Conference. That squad proved to be the highest scoring team in school history as it averaged 90.5 points per game. The Saints were rewarded with a second seed and first round bye in the NJCAA Region III Division II Tournament. Porter led the Saints to the championship game where they fell to Monroe.
COACH PORTER
The team's late-season success carried over to Porter's second year. Urbana opened the 2009-10 season winning seven of their first nine contests, including a pair of wins over nationally ranked opponents. The Blue Knights finished 14-13, posting the program's first winning season in 13 years. The 8-win turnaround was the second largest single year turnaround in the program's 45-year history.
In three seasons at Mercyhurst North East, Porter posted a 58-30 record, twice taking the Saints to the NJCAA Region III Finals. Porter was also an adjunct professor for the sports management department at MNE. Before taking over as head coach of the Saints, Porter spent two seasons as an assistant coach at MNE. He also served as the head cross country coach. In 2003-04, MNE won its first ever men's basketball WNYAC championship and finished the season 23-6. In 2004-05, the Saints finished with an overall record of 21-8. Prior to his stint at MNE, Porter served as an assistant coach at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania during the 2002-03 season. He has also worked various summer camps in the state of Pennsylvania. The Kittanning, PA native graduated from Geneva College in 2001 with a degree in Psychology. While at Geneva, he played for the Golden Tornadoes and was part of a squad that played in the championship game of the NCCAA national tournament. In 2003, Porter earned his Master's Degree in Sports Studies/Management at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Jeff is the son of Mark and Christine Porter of Worthington, Pennsylvania. He currently resides in Urbana with his wife, Stephanie.

ASSISTANT COACH RYAN SHARBAUGH Ryan Sharbaugh joined Urbana University Head Men's Basketball Coach Jeff Porter's coaching staff in July of 2012. Sharbaugh becomes a Blue Knight after finishing a stint as an assistant coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College under Jim Boone. The Bobcats finished the season with a school record mark of 22-9, earning the program’s first ever NCAA Division II Regional Tournament victory. Sharbaugh operated as the recruiting coordinator in addition to handling opponent scouts, post player development, in-game decisions, video editing and exchange, as well as non-conference game scheduling.
COACHING STAFF
Sharbaugh helped lead the Bobcats to their first 20-win-season since 2001, as well as WVIAC-bests in defensive scoring (65.1 ppg), defensive field goal percentage (.412) and defensive 3-p.t field goal percentage (.322). The Bobcats produced 2 All-Atlantic-Region award winners in Kelsey Williams (17.4 ppg, 8.7 rpg) and Raymont McElroy (21.7 ppg). McElroy was also awarded All-America Honorable Mention. Prior to his stint at West Virginia Wesleyan, Sharbaugh coached 2 seasons at California University of Pennsylvania as a graduate assistant under Coach Bill Brown. During his time at California, PA (2009-2011), the Vulcans compiled 33 wins including a PSAC playoff appearance. Under Coach Brown, Sharbaugh’s responsibilities included opponent scouts, post player development, film editing and exchange, academic monitoring, and travel and meal arrangements. Sharbaugh also played a crucial role in the success of Cal’s summer youth camp as co-director. Before entering the collegiate level, Sharbaugh spent one year as an assistant at the Summit Academy in Herman, Pennsylvania while working as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor. The New Wilmington, Pennsylvania native graduated from Westminster College (PA) in 2008 with a degree in psychology. During his time at Westminster, he coached 3 years at his high school alma mater, Wilmington Area School District. He received his Master’s degree in Sport Management with an emphasis in Sport Counseling from California University of Pennsylvania.
VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT TOM AMLIN Tom Amlin is in his fourth season with the Blue Knight Coaching Staff as a volunteer assistant. Tom previously coached for Circleville Bible College, now Ohio Christian University, in Circleville, Ohio. He led the team to two National Tournament invitations and during the 1993-94 season, Coach Amlin's team finished third place in the NCCAA national tournament. Tom is a former Urbana University student and Urbana resident. He and his wife have served in the Pastorate as well as traveling many years in ministry. Muhammad Jr. Named to All-Ohio Independent First Team CEDARVILLE, Ohio (March 8, 2012) - Urbana University men's basketball player Sharif Muhammad Jr. (Brooklyn, NY/South Shore HS) earned First Team All-Ohio Independent honors today. The award comes at the end of a whirlwind month for the senior guard/forward. Muhammad Jr. saved his best basketball for the final games of his collegiate career. He capped a 16-point comeback with a buzzer-beating game-winner against Central State on February 14th. Then he did it again in the first round of the OIC tournament, eliminating 4th seeded Malone with his game-winner at the horn on February 28th. In his final collegiate game, he poured in a careerhigh 25 points as Urbana nearly upset OIC #1 seed Cedarville in the semi-finals. Muhammad Jr. reached double-digits in 16 of his final 17 games, averaging 17.1 point per game over that span, and he pulled down at least 9 boards in 9 of those final 17 games. He led the Blue Knights in scoring (14.2 ppg), rebounding (6.7 rpg), blocks (23), minutes (31.5 mpg), field goals made and attempted, free throws made and attempted, and he finished 2nd in assists and 3rd in steals. Muhammad Jr. was a Third Team NCAA D-II All-Independent selection as a junior, and he repeated that performance as a senior. The Independents' Collegiate Athletics Association, or ICAA, is composed of current NCAA Division II Independent schools. Basketball members are Black Hills State, Central Oklahoma, Central State, Lindenwood, Notre Dame College, Oakland City, Palm Beach Atlantic, Urbana and Washington Adventist.

OF
ATHLETICS
On behalf of the entire Urbana University family, I would like to welcome you to our website and the home of Blue Knight athletics. Urbana University is proud to sponsor 15 athletic programs in one of the most beautiful geographic locations in the nation. Although athletics is an integral part of our campus environment, it is the pride that we take in the development of the total person that we find most rewarding. With so many college choices available to students today, I am often asked, "Why is Urbana University the right place for me?" Most often, my answer is that the core attribute of NCAA Division II athletics, known as "Life in Balance", is carried out and practiced in all that we do. At Urbana University it is universally accepted that all students and employees are equipped with a unique skill set of strengths and weaknesses. We constantly seek to accentuate those strengths and nurture those weaknesses in an effort to form a collective unified body of positive results. Our campus-wide slogan of "One Student at a Time" confirms our commitment to knowing each individual on a personal basis. It's what makes success a reality and not merely just a dream at Urbana University. Spearheaded by our move to the NCAA, we have created a culture of life in balance. This is not merely an athletics-only initiative but one that permeates our entire campus. The core attributes of life in balance are learning, service, passion, sportsmanship, and resourcefulness. Together, these attributes form a collective bond for all that call Urbana University home. As our campus continues to grow, it is done with the constant mindset to provide more opportunities for student development and increased success. All the while it has provided the very foundation for school spirit, pride, and a will to achieve the very best for our student-athletes. To be a Blue Knight student-athlete is to be a part of something truly unique and special. I am confident that you, as a student-athlete, alumni, colleague, or friend of Urbana University, will find your time here to be one of the most rewarding, meaningful portions of your life. If you haven't already, you will soon discover that working together works wonders here at Urbana University. Success for ourselves is found in each other. We invite you to become a valued part of a grand tradition and a unique story of success for yourself and all those that surround you. Best wishes in all that you do, and GO BLUE KNIGHTS!
