UU ANNOUNCES MOVE TO MOUNTAIN EAST CONFERENCE URBANA, Ohio (August 23, 2012) - The presidents of 12 universities, 9 in West Virginia, 2 in Ohio, and 1 in Virginia, jointly announce the formation of a new all-sports collegiate athletic conference to be named the Mountain East Conference (MEC). The new 12-team league’s charter membership will include: Concord University (W.Va.), Fairmont State University (W.Va.), Glenville State College (W.Va.), Notre Dame College (Oh.), Shepherd University (W.Va.), The University of Charleston (W.Va.), The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, Urbana University, West Liberty University (W.Va.), West Virginia State University, Wheeling Jesuit University (W.Va.), and West Virginia Wesleyan College. "We are extremely pleased to announce the formation of the Mountain East Conference,” stated spokesperson Reid Amos on behalf of the 12 presidents of the new alliance. “The goal of this effort has been to align like-minded institutions with similar budgets and goals across a regional footprint. We strongly believe that our charter membership creates a solid foundation that provides mutual benefit and secures the athletic future for our institutions. We will collectively make every effort to provide a high-quality experience for our student-athletes in Mountain East competition.” The Mountain East Conference intends to commence competition for the 2013-14 academic year, but will remain active with their current conference affiliations until such time that they would be able to compete as a conference within the NCAA. The move will not affect any athletic schedules for 2012-13. With current sports sponsorship, the Mountain East Conference will meet the NCAA requirement for a conference championship in 16 sports, including: Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Football, Men’s and Women’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Softball, Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Men’s and Women’s Track, and Volleyball. The West Virginia institutions are currently members of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC), UVa-Wise and Urbana were slated to compete in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) beginning in 2013, and Notre Dame is an NCAA Division II Independent competing in 5 of its 22 sports as an affiliate member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). UVa-Wise has been accepted into the NCAA membership process and will compete within NCAA Division II in 2013 while pursuing full membership; the other 11 schools are all NCAA Division II members.

BLUE KNIGHTS READY
FOR
TITLE RUN
IN
2012-13
URBANA, Ohio (November 8, 2012) - After ending last season as one of the hottest teams in the region, the Urbana University women's basketball team is ready to make a splash in 2012-13. The Blue Knights return their top eight scorers and all five starters from last year's squad that won 12 games after the mid-season arrival of Head Coach Maria Marchesano. Marchesano guided a 2-8 team to 8 straight home wins and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Ohio Independent Championship Game against new Great Midwest Athletic Conference rival Cedarville University. The two teams split the regular season series, but Cedarville edged Urbana in the season finale. The contest may have been a preview of the G-MAC's top two teams this winter.
SEASON OUTLOOK
For her efforts in leading the Urbana turnaround, Marchesano was named the D-II Independent Coach of the Year. Almost her entire squad returns this season, including 96% of the scoring and rebounding. Last year's team featured no seniors and just two juniors. The rest of the roster was filled by sophomores and true freshmen. That young talent had plenty of time this offseason to get to know their new coach and learn her system after trying to pick it up on the fly last January and February. The young team made plenty of mistakes in the early going, but more often than not, veteran center Andrea Vogel was there to erase Urbana's mistakes on defense. Vogel finished second in the country in blocked shots, swatting a school-record 102 opponents' shots. The 6-2 center and fouryear starter returns to patrol the paint this season after averaging 11 points, 8 rebounds and nearly 4 blocked shots per game as a junior. Vogel is just 168 points shy of becoming Urbana's 11th career 1,000 point scorer. Records will likely fall on a nightly basis with Vogel on the floor as the reigning First Team All-Independent center is also second in career blocks, sixth in rebounds, seventh in field goal percentage and twelfth in field goals all-time at Urbana. Vogel will have help in the front court in the form of senior forward Jessica Saffold. Saffold started 26 of 29 games for the Blue Knights a year ago, averaging 9.3 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1 block per game. Sophomore centers Alyssa Ostrowski and Kate Francisco also return to the Blue Knights this season. Ostrowski appeared in all 29 games as a true freshman, averaging about 2 points and 2 boards in 10 minutes per game. Francisco sat out last season after transferring to Urbana from D-I Kent State University. The 6-1 center appeared in 27 games for the 20-10 Golden Flashes in 2009-10. The Blue Knights' backcourt is just as stacked as its gifted frontcourt. Sophomore Ciara Geiger led the Blue Knights in scoring last season, starting all 29 games as a true freshman. The D-II Independent Freshman of the Year poured in over 15 points per game while shooting 45% from the field. Geiger also knocked down a team-best 42 threes in addition to averaging 4 boards, 2.5 assists and 2 steals a game. Another member of the Blue Knight backcourt was no stranger to post-season accolades last season. Junior point guard DeVonyea Johnson earned All-Ohio Independent honors, and she earned an All-Tournament Team nod after coming on strong down the stretch. Johnson reached double figures in 13 of the final 14 games, averaging over 11 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists on the season. She also knocked down better than 36% of her attempts from deep, finishing second on the squad with 41 threes. Urbana's returning backcourt also features a pair of experienced starters in junior Jackie Cousineau and sophomore Katy Barkley. Cousineau made 14 starts, averaging 5.8 points, 2.0 rebounds,1.8 assists and a steal per game. She also knocked down 40 threes on the season. Barkley is a guard/forward combo. She started 23 contests a year ago, averaging 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists on 50% shooting from downtown. Sophomore Christina Nagle (28 games, 1.6 ppg) and junior Brittany Parks (2 games, 1.0 ppg) also return to the Blue Knight backcourt after making contributions in their first seasons. Three prized recruits will join Marchesano's backcourt mix this season. Freshmen Mertzie Klein, Morgan Plummer and Kennedy Boggs all come from winning prep pedigrees. Klein was an all-state performer and McDonald's All-American nominee at Grand Rapids' West Catholic High School in Michigan. Plummer was the D-II Central District Player of the Year at nearby Jonathan Alder High School, and Boggs earned Second Team All-Ohio honors at Delphos Jefferson High School. Together, Marchesano's Blue Knights figure to contend for a conference title in her first full season at the helm. Before G-MAC play begins in January, Urbana will try to navigate a non-conference slate that features the reigning NCAA D-II runners-up and pre-season #1 Ashland University. The Blue Knights will also take on a Division I opponent for the first time in almost four decades when the team travels to Wright State on December 12th. The 2012-13 schedule also includes a holiday trip to Puerto Rico for a pair of games in early January. But first, Urbana opens the season on Saturday, November 10th at Slippery Rock University. The Blue Knights' home opener comes a week later on November 17th against regional rival Ohio Dominican University.

HEAD COACH MARIA MARCHESANO BUTLER UNIVERSITY, ‘05 EMAIL: MMARCHESANO@URBANA.EDU PHONE: 937.484.1392 Urbana University Athletic Director Doug Young named Maria Marchesano the Blue Knights’ new head women’s basketball coach in December of 2011. “There is a renewed excitement surrounding the women’s basketball program,” said Young upon the announcement. “When Maria visited our campus, she immediately embraced the program, and the team reaffirmed my feelings that she was a great fit.” "After visiting campus, meeting the girls, and getting to know Urbana as a whole, I was immediately excited about the possibility of joining the Blue Knight family,” explained Marchesano upon her hiring. “This is a great opportunity, and I'm extremely thankful and appreciative to Doug Young, President Jones, and the University."
For her efforts, Marchesano was named the D-II Independent Coach of the Year. After that 2-8 start, the Blue Knights finished 12-7 under Marchesano, including an incredible 9-1 at home. Four Blue Knights earned All-Independent honors as the squad turned their season around and finished 14-15. Marchesano comes to Urbana from Manchester College in North Manchester, Indiana where she served as an assistant coach for both the women’s basketball and softball teams. Marchesano joined the Spartans before the 2010-11 season. Prior to that, she spent four years playing and coaching both basketball and softball professionally in the Italian Basketball Federation and Italian Federation of Softball.
HEAD COACH
Immediately upon Marchesano's arrival, the team showed signs of remarkable improvement. The 2-8 Blue Knights ran off 8 straight wins at home. By mid-February, they had climbed back to .500 and qualified as the #3 seed in the 6-team DII Ohio Independent Championships. As the 3-seed, the Blue Knights made a run to the OIC Championship game, where their season came to an end with a 10-point loss at top-seeded Cedarville.
The Fort Wayne, Indiana native was a four-year letter winner in women’s basketball and a one-year letter winner in softball at Division I Butler University. She graduated from Butler with a degree in Integrated Communications in 2005. Marchesano ended her Bulldog basketball career as the second most prolific three-point shooter in school history. Just two days later, she joined the Bulldog softball team after a 4-year hiatus from the sport, starting 48 games at shortstop as a senior. A two-sport standout at Elmhurst High School, Marchesano earned All-State selections in both sports.

GRADUATE ASSISTANT HALEY DUCEY Haley Ducey joined the Urbana coaching staff as a graduate assistant soon after completing her four-year career as a Blue Knight in 2011. After sitting out her freshman season with a knee injury, Ducey went on to complete one of the most successful threeyear runs as a player in school history. She finished with 755 career points in 82 games for the Royal Blue and White. Despite playing just three seasons, she finished 12th alltime in career assists (215), 6th in career 3-point percentage (33.8%), and 1st in career free throw percentage (89.2%).
ASSISTANT COACH
Urbana averaged over 15 wins a season during Ducey's career, and twice the team captain earned NCAA Division II All-Independent honors. A leader on the court and in the classroom, Ducey was a regular on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and Dean's List. She's currently working towards her MBA after receiving her undergraduate degree in Sports Management.
6
In her first season as a Graduate Assistant, Ducey briefly stepped in as an interim head coach during a coaching change. She led the Blue Knights to her first career head coaching victory on December 13, 2011, a 67-57 decision over Salem International University. The next week, she handed the reigns of the program over to new Head Coach Maria Marchesano, who with Ducey's assistance, earned D-II Independent Coach of the Year honors after turning the program around down the stretch. Prior to coming to Urbana, Ducey was a standout prep star at Ottawa-Glandorf High School. She started 72 consecutive games for the Titans, averaging 12.4 points per game and earning All-Ohio honors in 2007.

On behalf of the entire Urbana University family, I would like to welcome you to our website and the home of Blue Knight athletics. Urbana University is proud to sponsor 15 athletic programs in one of the most beautiful geographic locations in the nation. Although athletics is an integral part of our campus environment, it is the pride that we take in the development of the total person that we find most rewarding. With so many college choices available to students today, I am often asked, "Why is Urbana University the right place for me?" Most often, my answer is that the core attribute of NCAA Division II athletics, known as "Life in Balance", is carried out and practiced in all that we do. At Urbana University it is universally accepted that all students and employees are equipped with a unique skill set of strengths and weaknesses. We constantly seek to accentuate those strengths and nurture those weaknesses in an effort to form a collective unified body of positive results. Our campus-wide slogan of "One Student at a Time" confirms our commitment to knowing each individual on a personal basis. It's what makes success a reality and not merely just a dream at Urbana University. Spearheaded by our move to the NCAA, we have created a culture of life in balance. This is not merely an athletics-only initiative but one that permeates our entire campus. The core attributes of life in balance are learning, service, passion, sportsmanship, and resourcefulness. Together, these attributes form a collective bond for all that call Urbana University home. As our campus continues to grow, it is done with the constant mindset to provide more opportunities for student development and increased success. All the while it has provided the very foundation for school spirit, pride, and a will to achieve the very best for our student-athletes. To be a Blue Knight student-athlete is to be a part of something truly unique and special. I am confident that you, as a student-athlete, alumni, colleague, or friend of Urbana University, will find your time here to be one of the most rewarding, meaningful portions of your life. If you haven't already, you will soon discover that working together works wonders here at Urbana University. Success for ourselves is found in each other. We invite you to become a valued part of a grand tradition and a unique story of success for yourself and all those that surround you.
