10 QUESTIONS WITH BLUE KNIGHT

D.J. MENDENHALL

IN THE FIRST 3 DECADES OF THE URBANA UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL PROGRAM, NO BLUE KNIGHT HAS MADE THE IMPACT QUARTERBACK D.J. MENDENHALL HAS IN HIS FIRST 2 SEASONS. IN THE FINAL GAME OF HIS SOPHOMORE YEAR, MENDENHALL BROKE THE SCHOOL’S CAREER SCORING RECORD. HE HAS ALREADY PERSONALLY CROSSED THE GOAL LINE MORE TIMES THAN ANY BLUE KNIGHT IN THE HISTORY OF THE PROGRAM! AS A TRUE FRESHMAN, HIS OFFENSE BROKE EVERY TEAM RECORD IN THE BOOKS. AS AN ENCORE, HE WENT OUT AND BROKE ALL OF THOSE RECORDS AGAIN AS A SOPHOMORE. NOW, ENTERING HIS JUNIOR SEASON, MENDENHALL IS A PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN WITH HIS SIGHTS SET ON LEADING HIS SQUAD TO THE PROGRAM’S FIRST NCAA DIVISION II PLAYOFF APPEARANCE. IF MENDENHALL AND THE BLUE KNIGHTS PULL IT OFF, THEY’LL INTRODUCE THE REST OF THE COUNTRY TO URBANA UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL. 1. LET'S HEAR THE TEAM GOALS FOR 2011?

IN THE OFFENSE FOR AWHILE NOW SO HE CAN STEP IN WITH THE

I PLAYED AGAINST SOME GUYS THAT ARE IN THE NFL NOW. LAST

OTHERS AND HELP US REPLACE GUYS LIKE LEAK AND HIGHTOWER.

YEAR, AGAINST WAYNE STATE, WE PLAYED AGAINST GUYS WHO

DEFINITELY WIN OUR CONFERENCE FIRST AND FOREMOST. AN UNDEFEATED SEASON WOULD BE NICE, AND AFTER WE MAKE THE 5. IN EACH OF YOUR FIRST 2 SEASONS, YOU PLAYOFFS, WE WANT TO WIN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. SHARED TIME ON THE FIELD WITH VETERAN QB EVAN GEHLERT. EVAN'S MOVED ON AND IS 2. AFTER JUST 2 SEASONS AT URBANA, YOU'RE CURRENTLY PLAYING PROFESSIONALLY OVERSEAS. STARTING TO RECEIVE NATIONAL ATTENTION, WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU LEARNED INCLUDING A PRE-SEASON ALL-AMERICAN FROM EVAN? MENTION HEADING INTO 2012. IS THERE 1 HONOR OR AWARD YOU'D LIKE TO RECEIVE BEFORE HE KINDA WALKED ME THROUGH EVERYTHING STEP-BY-STEP AND YOUR CAREER IS OVER AT UU? IF I EVER HAD ANY QUESTIONS, HE ALWAYS SAID TO JUST LET HIM KNOW AND DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK. COMING INTO MY FRESHMAN I DON'T REALLY LOOK FORWARD TO PERSONAL GOALS. IT'S NICE YEAR, HE KNEW I'D BE TAKING THE MAJORITY OF THE SNAPS, BUT AT THE END OF THE SEASON TO RECEIVE AWARDS, BUT I'M WE TALKED AND MADE THE DECISION NOT TO LET IT AFFECT OUR FOCUSED ON WINNING GAMES AND A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IS FRIENDSHIP OFF THE FIELD, AND IT NEVER DID. HE ACCEPTED IT ALWAYS MY GOAL. LIKE A MAN WOULD, AND WE MOVED ON FROM THERE.

NFL NOW. JEREMY JONES, THE SAFETY, AND AN I DON'T REALLY KNOW WHO THE BEST I'VE EVER PLAYED WITH IS. IF THEY PLAYED WITH ME, THEN THEY'VE ALL BEEN TAUGHT THE SAME THING I HAVE. THEY LOVE THE GAME AND WANT TO WIN, AND THAT'S PRETTY MUCH ALL I DO. ONE SPECIFIC NAME DOESN'T REALLY COME TO MIND.

WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO MAKE IT 3 YEARS IN A

US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR VETERAN

OFFENSIVE LINE?

ROW?

IT'S GREAT. I LOVE HAVING VETERANS THAT KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING. MOST OF THEM HAVE BEEN HERE 3 OR 4 YEARS, AND ATTENTION TO DETAILS. IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT ARE SOME HAVE EVEN BEEN HERE 5 YEARS. I'LL START FROM THE LEFT IMPORTANT. COACH TAYNOR ALWAYS PREACHES ON THAT. WE WITH TACKLE ALEX MAXSON. MAXSON SAID FROM DAY 1, "IF HAVE TO GO OUT AND EXECUTE TO THE BEST OF OUR ABILITY. WE YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS, LET ME KNOW AND I'LL TAKE CARE OF HAVE A LOT OF PLAYMAKERS, HIGH SKILL GUYS, AND WE RETURN IT." THEY'VE ALL DONE THAT FOR ME. ANDREW MINDA MISSED ALMOST ALL OF OUR OFFENSIVE LINEMEN SO WE SHOULD BE JUST SPRING BALL LAST YEAR, BUT HE STEPPED IN AND FILLED THAT AS GOOD AS LAST YEAR, IF NOT BETTER. SPOT. COACH T IS REALLY HAPPY WITH HIS PERFORMANCE. HE'S ANOTHER ONE THAT STEPPED IN LIKE A BIGGER BROTHER FOR ME. 4. YOU LOST YOUR TOP 2 TARGETS IN WIDE OUR CENTER, KYLE WALLACE, IS A LITTLE UNDERSIZED COMPARED RECEIVERS MATT HIGHTOWER AND JERRELL TO THE REST, BUT HE'S GOT A BIG HEART AND HE'S A LEADER. THE LEAK? HOW WILL THE OFFENSE REPLACE THOSE CENTER IS THE HEAD OF THE OFFENSIVE LINE AND WALLACE LOSSES AND WHO DO YOU SEE STEPPING UP THIS HANDLES IT. SCOTT PORTER IS SCOTT PORTER. HE WORKS YEAR TO HELP OVERCOME MATT AND JERRELL'S HARD ON EVERY PLAY. NEVER QUITS. I MEAN, THE GUY TRIED TO COMBINED CAREER NUMBERS OF 285 CATCHES, PLAY ON A BROKEN FOOT LAST YEAR. THAT'S THE TYPE OF GUY 3,379 YARDS AND 24 TDS? SCOTT PORTER IS. ETHAN OAKLEY STEPPED IN ON DAY 1 AND TELLS ME HE'S ALWAYS GOT MY BACK. I'VE SEEN HIS FINGERS IN MARC JOHNSON WILL BE ON THE OUTSIDE REPLACING LEAK, SO MANY DIFFERENT POSITIONS, AND HIS SHOULDER IS ALWAYS AND JOE WEBB IS BACK. HE'S ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF MY GO-TO HURT, BUT HE PLAYS. HE HAS THAT “WANT -TO” MENTALITY TARGETS. WE'VE ALSO GOT SANDERS SIUS. HE KNOWS THE COACH IS ALWAYS PREACHING ABOUT. OFFENSE BECAUSE HE'S BEEN AROUND IT FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS. HOPEFULLY HE'LL STEP IN AND HELP REPLACE HIGHTOWER, 7. WHO IS THE BEST PLAYER YOU'VE EVER PLAYED ALONG WITH NWO (NATE WILBURN-OGLETREE). HE'S BEEN WITH OR AGAINST?

OFFENSIVE LINEMAN (JOE LONG) MADE IT.

8. WHO'S YOUR FAVORITE NFL TEAM AND PLAYER, AND WHAT PLAYER, PAST OR PRESENT, DO YOU TRY TO MODEL YOUR GAME AFTER? I DON'T REALLY HAVE A FAVORITE NFL TEAM. I JUST LIKE PLAYERS. AS A QUARTERBACK, I WOULD HAVE TO SAY AARON RODGERS. HE SLINGS THE BALL AROUND, AND HE'S LIKE YOUR PROTOTYPICAL NFL QB. HE'S SMART, TOO. WHEN I THINK OF PAST NFL QUARTERBACKS, DAN MARINO IS THE FIRST PLAYER I THINK OF. 9. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT ON THE FIELD AT URBANA? DEFINITELY WINNING THE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP LAST YEAR. IN THE LAST GAME AGAINST LINCOLN, IT FELT LIKE WE FINALLY ACCOMPLISHED SOMETHING. THE FIRST 5 GAMES LAST YEAR WERE KINDA ROUGH. AT ONE POINT, I STEPPED IN AND TALKED TO COACH T. WE TALKED AND DECIDED WE WERE STILL ALRIGHT. THEN, THE LAST 5 GAMES, WE BROKE ALL KINDS OF RECORDS. WE AVERAGED LIKE 40-SOMETHING POINTS PER GAME, AND IN THAT LAST GAME, IT FINALLY FELT LIKE WE ACCOMPLISHED SOMETHING.

2013 SCHEDULE 11

URBANA SETS SIGHTS ON CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2012 Stars appear to be aligning for magical Blue Knight charge into D-II playoff picture Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), so the path to participation in the D-II playoffs is set. Urbana needs to finish first in the GLVC and eighth or better in Super Region Three for an automatic berth.

2O12 OUTLOOK

Last year’s 8-3 campaign wasn’t enough as the Blue Knights finished just outside the top 10 in one of the toughest regions in the country. Urbana experienced how tough the region can be firsthand in last year’s season opener. On the road, Urbana dropped a 69-24 decision to nationally ranked, and eventual national runnerup, Wayne State University. Wayne State just barely snuck into the playoffs by grabbing the region’s sixth and final spot before making a run all the way to the National Championship.

URBANA, Ohio (August 15, 2012) – When Urbana University Head Football Coach David Taynor assumed control of his alma mater in 2008, he probably dreamed of a day when he’d head into a season with a squad as strong as his 2012 edition. The team boasts as many as 19 returning starters, including 13 allconference performers. Last year’s Blue Knights set school records for wins (8), points per game (36.2), opponents’ points per game (19.0), total yards (5,053), yards per game (459.4), rushing yards per game (190.8), passing yards per game (268.5), touchdowns (56), and average yards per play (6.3), amongst many others.

“We want to continue building off what we accomplished last year with the conference championship,” explains fifth-year senior tackle Ethan Oakley (West Liberty, OH/West LibertySalem HS). “This year, we want to take the next step and make the playoffs. After that, I think everyone on the team would like to go on a run.”

Third-year starting quarterback D.J. Mendenhall (West Jefferson, OH/West Jefferson HS) carries Oakley’s confidence a step further, “An undefeated season would be nice, and after we Taynor’s Blue Knights set a new program standard make the playoffs, we want to win a national in 2011, winning eight games thanks to a season- championship.” ending six-game winning streak. This fall marks Urbana’s first as a member of an NCAA Division II conference that carries an “earned-access” bid into the national playoffs. The former 4team GLFC has been absorbed into the 9-team

12

As deflating as that experience was at the time, it has this Blue Knight squad believing it can make a similar run.

Day 1, they approached me and let me know, ‘If you have any problems, let us know and we’ll take care of it.’” Joining Oakley, and his five years of experience on the Blue Knight offensive line, is fifth-year left tackle Alex Maxson (Delaware, OH/Hayes HS), fifth-year guard Andrew Minda (Dublin, OH/Coffman HS), fourth-year guard Scott Porter (Cincinnati, OH/Indian Hill HS), and third-year center Kyle Wallace (West Milton, OH/MiltonUnion HS). Together, the group has over 100 career starts for the Royal Blue and White, and four of the five have already earned allconference honors for their exemplary work in the trenches. It also seems poignant to mention that the front line averages 6’4" and 300 pounds, thank in large part to the 6’6", 320 pound fifthyear tackle bookends. Oakley and Maxson have started each of the past 33 games together, paving the way for record after falling record. They’ll also pave the way once again for the returning conference freshman of the year, running back David Hill (St. Louis, MO/DeSmet Jesuit HS). A powerful bruiser, the 5’10", 220 pound Hill bulldozed opponents for nearly 600 yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie fighting for carries in a crowded backfield. His workload should increase significantly in 2012 behind fifth-year fullback Maurice Harden (Dayton, OH/Thurgood Marshall HS). Urbana’s possesses a strong ground-and-pound game, but the offense’s bread-and-butter is an all-out aerial assault featuring third-year wide receiver Joe Webb (Mechanicsburg, OH/ Mechanicsburg HS). Webb led the nation in yards per catch (25.1) as a sophomore, but he was often the third option on a stacked receiving corps. Gone are seniors and top targets Matt Hightower and Jerrell Leak, leaving an opening for someone else to be the benefactor of their combined 119 catches for 1,474 yards and 8 TDs last season. Webb doesn’t see his role as the team’s dynamic deep threat changing much. He believes Hightower and Leak’s replacements already exist on this roster.

“It’s great playing behind a veteran offensive line,” marvels Mendenhall. “I love having “We’re expecting a lot out of Marc Johnson veterans that know what they’re doing up front. (Lima, OH/Senior HS). We think he’ll be the #2 Most of them have been here three or four years, receiver to step up and play a lot for us.” and some have even been here five years. From

Webb continues, “In the slot, we have a position battle between Nate Wilburn-Ogletree (Brookville, OH/Northmont HS), Sanders Sius (Olympia, FL), and Alvin Busbee (Columbus, OH/Walnut Ridge HS/Eastern Kentucky). Sanders Sius worked really hard this offseason. I think he’ll step up and have a big year. Ogletree and Busbee worked hard too, so they’ll push everyone and we’ll have a lot of options.”

“I think that we’re handling the adversity of a coaching change pretty well,” explains McComas. “It’s basically the same defense with some different calls. I think we’re pretty confident, and we’re willing to put in the work to accomplish our goals. Coach Smith brings an intensity to the game that I like to see in a defensive coordinator. He has a passion for this game, and he gets us fired up and ready to go.”

(Homeworth, OH/Marlington HS) has starting experience at the position, and he turned in a strong spring season. His three interceptions were tied for third on last year’s team. Another junior, Kyle Allman (Massilon, OH/Washington HS), saw action in all 11 games last season, and sophomore Kenya Coombs (Mansfield, OH/ Lexington) could see significant action at the position after converting from wide receiver.

McComas will be joined by a bevy of heady veterans on defense, including another preseason All-American, senior defensive end Perry Jenkins (Columbus, OH/Walnut Ridge HS). Undersized, Jenkins utilizes an unstoppable motor to wreak havoc in opposing backfields. Last year alone, he finished with 59 tackles, including a teamhigh 18.5 behind the line of scrimmage. Jenkins will be joined up front by returners Bruce Parker (Sandusky, OH/Sandusky HS), Kyle Ferguson (West Jefferson, OH/West Jefferson HS), and Rodney Huston (Sidney, OH/Lehman Catholic HS). Parker was a Second Team All-Ohio selection with 36 tackles and a team-high 3 forced fumbles.

Questions also remain at some of the other open defensive back spots. Along with McComas, veterans Daniel Goodrum (Cleveland, OH/Villa Angela St. Joseph’s HS) and Eric Fisher (West Jefferson, OH/West Jefferson HS) return to patrol the defensive backfield, but five departures leave a few openings on the team’s defensive two-deep. Trying to replace last year’s conference Defensive Back of the Year Juan McKeever, redshirt freshman Brian Ridley (Columbus, OH/Whetstone HS) shined this spring, but this is a position where Taynor’s team could benefit from a flood of nearly 70 newcomers.

All that remains now are the games. Urbana has 11 on its 2012 schedule, including 8 against GLVC opponents. The Blue Knights are 13-6 all-time against current GLVC teams. That includes a 131 mark in their last 14. The only unfamiliar opponent on the 2012 schedule is preseason favorite Indianapolis. The Greyhounds were the unanimous pick to finish first in the conference after coming over from, arguably, the country’s strongest D-II football conference, the GLIAC. Indy finished 7-4 last season. They saw their conference title and playoff hopes dashed in a 28-19 loss to Wayne State in their home finale.

2O12 OUTLOOK

The returning linebackers feature three more allconference performers with a ton of experience. Reigning GLFC Linebacker of the Year Drew Underwood will line up next to Shane Cahill for the fourth straight year at UU after the duo played together at nearby West Jefferson High School during their prep careers. Together, they Spivey will be joined by the team’s ultimate utility combined for 114 tackles last year, including player, senior Matt Nowak (Garfield Heights, 17 for a loss of 87 yards. OH/Trinity HS). Nowak was recruited into the program as a tight end in 2009. He caught a couple of passes, including a touchdown, as a true freshman, but before his sophomore season, he bulked up to fill a need at guard for the Blue Knights. The following year, there was a new need for Nowak on the defensive side of the ball, so he made the switch to nose tackle. After just one game on defense, Nowak crossed back over the line to fill injured offensive lineman Scott Porter’s spot. Now, after donning four different uniform numbers to accommodate his many moves, a trimmed-down Nowak is back in #47 to fill the team’s H-back role. The third member of this linebacker trio is no Defensively, Urbana returns 8 of 11 starters. For slouch. Lamar Ross (Columbus, OH/Walnut most teams, that’s a healthy haul, but compared Ridge HS) finished fourth on the squad with 57 to Urbana’s offense, there is an air of uncertainty tackles in his third year on the job. A trio of juniors, including Kevin Smith (Lexington, OH/ surrounding the Blue Knight defense. Lexington HS), Nick Shaw (Coshocton, OH/ New Defensive Coordinator Paul Smith hopes to Coshocton HS) and Roy Harvison (Columbus, answer most of the questions in his first camp OH/Marion-Franklin HS), add much-needed with the team. Smith comes to Urbana from nearby depth to the heart of Urbana’s defense. Tiffin University, where he served on the same coaching staff as Taynor just a few seasons ago. Replacing First Team All-Region performer Wes Under Smith, the Blue Knights will continue to run Edwards at cornerback is high on the defense’s their unique 3-3-5 defense that features fast and priority list this fall. Edwards finished second in active linebacker/defensive back hybrids. One all of D-II in passes defended last season. Urbana of those returning hybrids is junior David opens camps with three vets vying for two starting cornerback slots. Junior Jake Krupko McComas (Dayton, OH/Carroll HS). In all, Urbana returns eleven players with starting experience on offense. Tight end LaVelle Spivey (Newark, OH/Newark HS) assumed the starting role at his position last year after an injury sidelined the incumbent. In his very first start, he caught 8 balls for 87 yards and 3 TDs.

Urbana’s special teams were much-improved in 2011. Former linebacker Clay Lust (Prospect, OH/Olentangy Liberty HS) overtook the punting duties, averaging 39 yards a boot. Marshall Newsome (Huber Heights, OH/Wayne HS) provided stability in the kicking game and earned First Team All-Conference honors along with Lust. Longsnapper John Krabill (West Liberty, OH/ West Liberty-Salem HS) returns for his third season to provide additional stability in the kicking game.

Urbana grabbed the second spot in the GLVC’s preseason coaches’ poll. If the predictions hold true, Urbana will host Indianapolis on the regular season’s final day with conference title and playoff implications on the line. Urbana also opens the 2012 season at home. The Blue Knights welcome familiar foe Tusculum College to town on Saturday, September 1st. Urbana and Tusculum have tussled three times before. Tusculum came out on top all three times, including a 39-36 win on a final drive touchdown by the 24th ranked Pioneers with 24 ticks left on the clock in 2010. On their last trip to Urbana in 2009, the Pioneers escaped with a win in a 4535 shootout. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. at Urbana University Stadium.

HEAD FOOTBALL COACH DAVID TAYNOR

COACH TAYNOR

David Taynor, a 1999 graduate of Urbana University, was named Head Football Coach on April 24, 2008. He became the 9th head football coach at Urbana University. The odds were stacked against Taynor in his first season at the helm of his alma mater. After a brief recruiting period, Taynor's new team tackled the program's first taste of NCAA D-II football. The Blue Knights won their home opener 28-19 over West Virginia Tech, but the team finished the season with 9 straight defeats, including 5 to nationally ranked opponents and 2 in overtime. In 2009, the Blue Knights regrouped under Taynor. With a full season of experience and recruiting under their belt, Taynor's coaching staff propelled Urbana to a 6-5 finish in his second season. The highlight of the year came in the third week as Taynor's upstarts announced their arrival to the D-II world by knocking off a true D-I powerhouse, the University of Dayton. The victory was the program's first against a Division I opponent, and it helped the team tie the school record for wins in a season. The 5-win improvement from Year 1 to Year 2 also tied the school mark for the biggest single season turnaround. Taynor was a senior center and captain on the last team to achieve such a turnaround. Urbana's David vs. Goliath moment at UD could have been written off as a one-hit wonder after the team appeared to have taken a step back in 2010. Urbana began Taynor's third year 1-4 after falling by a combined 8 points to 3 opponents who spent time in the national rankings. An inconsistent kicking game almost caused Urbana to throw in the towel, but Taynor's Blue Knights kept battling. The team finished the year with three straight wins by a combined 77 points. The team's record-setting offense set 9 school records, including points per game (32.3), yards per game (388.1) and passing touchdowns (27). Defensively, senior linebacker Travis Brisco earned the school's first NCAA D-II All-American nod after leading the country in 3

DOUG YOUNG DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

On behalf of the entire Urbana University family, I would like to welcome you to the home of Blue Knight athletics. Urbana University is proud to sponsor 15 athletic programs in one of the most beautiful geographic locations in the nation. Although athletics is an integral part of our campus environment, it is the pride that we take in the development of the total person that we find most rewarding. With so many college choices available to students today, I am often asked, "Why is Urbana University the right place for me?" Most often, my answer is that the core attribute of NCAA Division II athletics, known as "Life in Balance", is carried out and practiced in all that we do.

At Urbana University it is universally accepted that all students and employees are equipped with a unique skill set of strengths and weaknesses. We constantly seek to accentuate those strengths and nurture those weaknesses in an effort to form a collective unified body of positive results. Our campus-wide slogan of "One Student at a Time" confirms our commitment to knowing each individual on a personal basis. It's what makes success a reality and not merely just a dream at Urbana University. Spearheaded by our move to the NCAA, we have created a culture of life in balance. This is not merely an athletics-only initiative but one that permeates our entire campus. The core attributes of life in balance are learning, service, passion, sportsmanship, and resourcefulness. Together, these attributes form a collective bond for all that call Urbana University home.

AD/SUPPORT STAFF

As our campus continues to grow, it is done with the constant mindset to provide more opportunities for student development and increased success. All the while it has provided the very foundation for school spirit, pride, and a will to achieve the very best for our student-athletes. To be a Blue Knight student-athlete is to be a part of something truly unique and special. I am confident that you, as a student-athlete, alumni, colleague, or friend of Urbana University, will find your time here to be one of the most rewarding, meaningful portions of your life. 10 QUESTIONS WITH BLUE KNIGHT

ETHAN OAKLEY

URBANA UNIVERSITY OWNS ONE OF THE BIGGEST, MOST EXPERIENCED OFFENSIVE LINES IN THE COUNTRY, AND NO BLUE KNIGHT IS BIGGER OR MORE EXPERIENCED THAN RIGHT TACKLE ETHAN OAKLEY. STANDING 6’6”, 320 POUNDS, “THE OAKTREE” HAS MADE 33 STRAIGHT STARTS FOR THE BLUE KNIGHTS, MORE THAN ANYBODY ELSE ON THE ROSTER. HE IS 1 OF 5 FIFTH-YEAR SENIORS THAT REMAIN FROM COACH TAYNOR’S INAUGURAL RECRUITING CLASS, SO HE HAS SEEN THE PROGRAM GROW FROM A 1-WIN NAIA SQUAD IN 2008 TO AN NCAA DIVISION II PLAYOFF CONTENDER IN 2012. HIS CLASS IS JUST 3 WINS AWAY FROM GOING DOWN IN HISTORY AS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL TO EVER DON THE ROYAL BLUE & WHITE, AND OAKLEY’S EXPERIENCED OFFENSIVE LINE HAS BIG PLANS TO PAVE THE WAY TO HISTORY. 1. WHAT ARE THE TEAM'S 2012 GOALS? WE

WANT TO CONTINUE BUILDING OFF WHAT WE

ACCOMPLISHED LAST YEAR WITH THE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP. THIS YEAR, WE'RE IN A BIGGER CONFERENCE SO WE WANT TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP AND WIN THE CONFERENCE AGAIN AND MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. AFTER THAT,

I THINK EVERYONE ON THE TEAM WOULD LIKE TO GO ON A RUN AND WIN A COUPLE GAMES IN POST-SEASON. 2. WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL GOALS?

I DON'T REALLY HAVE A FAVORITE NFL TEAM. I JUST LIKE WATCHING FOOTBALL. IF I HAD TO PICK ONE, IT WOULD PROBABLY BE THE ST. LOUIS RAMS. JAKE LONG IS THE PLAYER I TRY TO MODEL MY GAME AFTER. HE'S JUST DOMINANT ON EVERY SINGLE PLAY. 5. YOUR OFFENSIVE LINE MIGHT BE ONE OF THE BIGGEST AND MOST EXPERIENCED UNITS IN ALL

SEPARATED SHOULDER MY SOPHOMORE YEAR. EVERY PLAY, SNAP, AND HIT FELT LIKE SOMEONE STABBING ME IN MY SHOULDER, BUT

ALL FOOTBALL PLAYERS, ESPECIALLY OFFENSIVE LINEMAN, PLAY HURT. YOU'RE NEVER 100% HEALTHY. YOU'RE ALWAYS NURSING

SOMETHING, WHETHER IT'S A TWISTED ANKLE OR BUSTED

SHOULDER. I'VE ALWAYS BEEN TOLD THERE'S A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING HURT AND BEING INJURED. IF YOU'RE INJURED

AND CAN'T PLAY, YOU'D BETTER NOT BE ABLE TO WALK.

OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL ENTERING THIS SEASON. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT EACH MEMBER AND 7. WHO DO YOU THINK COULD HAVE A BREAKOUT WHAT THEY BRING TO THE TABLE. YEAR ON THE OFFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL?

NATE WILBURN-OGLETREE COULD HAVE A BREAKOUT SEASON. LOSING MATT HIGHTOWER FROM LAST YEAR, WE NEED SOMEONE TO FILL THAT GO-TO ROLE WITH SURE HANDS, AND WE NEED SOMEONE TO COMPLEMENT JOE WEBB. IF SOMEBODY STEPS UP, THEY WON'T BE ABLE TO THROW AS MANY DOUBLE TEAMS AT WEBB, SO WE NEED SOMEBODY IN THE WR CORPS TO STEP UP. I THINK OGLETREE COULD BE THE ONE.

3. IN YOUR CAREER, WHO HAS INSPIRED YOU ANDREW MINDA IS THE HARD WORKER OF THE GROUP. HE THE MOST ON AND OFF THE FOOTBALL FIELD? REALLY WORKS HARD IN THE WEIGHT ROOM. THIS SUMMER HE WAS A BIG MOTIVATOR FOR ME. I HAVE TO WORK HARD JUST TO ON THE FIELD, I WOULD PROBABLY SAY JAKE LONG (TACKLE KEEP UP WITH HIM. MINDA KNOWS WHEN TO GET SERIOUS. FOR THE MIAMI DOLPHINS). I LOOK UP TO HIM AS ONE OF WE KNOW WHEN TO GET SERIOUS. WHEN WE CAN WE ALL THE MOST DOMINANT TACKLES IN THE NFL. IN THE COACHING LIKE TO JOKE AROUND. THAT'S ALMOST EVERY FAT GUY. WORLD, IT WOULD BE COACH TAYNOR. HE HAS BEEN MY HEAD COACH AS WELL AS MY POSITION COACH SINCE I CAME KYLE WALLACE STEPPED UP BIG TIME LAST YEAR. WHEN TO URBANA, AND HE PLAYED THE POSITION AND PLAYED IT PORTER WENT DOWN, WE ALL LOOKED AROUND FOR SOMEONE EXTREMELY WELL AT URBANA. I TRY TO LEARN EVERYTHING TO FILL THAT SPOT. WALLACE REALLY STEPPED UP IN THE CENTER POSITION. THAT'S SUCH AN IMPORTANT POSITION FOR I CAN FROM A GUY LIKE THAT. US, SO THAT WAS HUGE. OFF THE FIELD, MY INSPIRATION COMES FROM MY FAMILY. YEARS OF WORKING OUT AT THE FARM AND GOING TO SHOWS SCOTT PORTER WATCHES A TON OF FILM. HE DOESN'T HAVE REALLY TAUGHT ME GOOD LIFE LESSONS AND HELPED ME GET MUCH TO SAY, BUT WHAT HE SAYS HAS A LOT OF VALUE. HE TO WHERE I AM TODAY, AND IT TAUGHT ME HOW TO BE A GIVES A LOT OF 1 OR 2-WORD ANSWERS, BUT HE GETS HIS GOOD SON AND, SOMEDAY A GOOD HUSBAND AND FATHER. POINT ACROSS. HE DOESN'T SPEND HIS FREE TIME PLAYING XBOX OR WATCHING TV. WHEN PORTER HAS FREE TIME, HE'S 4. WHO'S YOUR FAVORITE NFL TEAM AND WATCHING FILM. PLAYER? IS THERE AN OFFENSIVE LINEMAN, PAST OR PRESENT, THAT YOU TRY TO MODEL AS A GROUP, WE LOVE TO GOOF AROUND AND HAVE A GOOD YOUR GAME AFTER? TIME LIKE ANY GROUP OF FAT GUYS, BUT WHEN IT'S TIME TO BUCKLE CHIN STRAPS AND GET SERIOUS, I HAVE EVERY AMOUNT OF TRUST I CAN IN THOSE GUYS UP FRONT. YOU'VE GOT TO

8.

WHAT

GAME ARE YOU MOST LOOKING

FORWARD TO THIS SEASON AND WHY?

I

WOULD HAVE TO SAY INDIANAPOLIS BECAUSE THEY WERE

PICKED IN THE CONFERENCE PRESEASON POLL TO FINISH #1. WE

WERE PICKED #2, SO IN A PERFECT WORLD IF EVERYTHING WORKS

OUT, THAT GAME WILL BE FOR THE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP. AND IT WILL BE AT HOME ON SENIOR DAY. IF WE EXECUTE OUR GAME PLANS, WE'LL BE SITTING THERE ON THE LAST DAY OF THE SEASON, READY TO TAKE THE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP AGAIN AND MAKE THE PLAYOFFS.

A

CLOSE SECOND WOULD BE THE

TUSCULUM

BLUE KNIGHT SPOTLIGHT

I'D LIKE TO TAKE OVER SOME OF THE LEADERSHIP ROLE. WE ALEX MAXSON AND I HAVE PLAYED TOGETHER AND BEEN LIFTING PARTNERS FOR 4 YEARS NOW. MAXSON KEEPS WITH WES EDWARDS AND THE REST OF THE SENIORS LEAVING. EVERYTHING LIGHT IN THE MEETINGS. HE'S ALWAYS CRACKING THAT GROUP WAS THE LEADERSHIP VOICE OF THIS TEAM. I'D JOKES AND QUOTING MOVIES TO LIGHTEN THE MOOD A LITTLE ALSO LIKE TO GET NAMED TO THE ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM BIT ON BAD DAYS. I WOULD SAY I'M CLOSEST TO MAXSON AGAIN AND BE NAMED THE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE YEAR SINCE WE PLAY THE SAME POSITION AND WE'VE BEEN TOGETHER IN THE CONFERENCE. FOR SO LONG. LOST A LOT OF OUR LEADERSHIP VOICE THROUGH GRADUATION

GAME IN THE

OPENER. WE'VE BEEN SO CLOSE TO BEATING THEM BUT HAVEN'T

DONE IT YET. WE WENT DOWN THERE EARLIER IN MY CAREER

AND WE PUT UP MORE POINTS THAN ANY OTHER TEAM ON THEM,

BUT WE STILL LOST. THEY WERE NATIONALLY RANKED AND WE

ALMOST BEAT THEM. THE SEASON OPENER COULD BE A LITTLE PAYBACK.

9. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT

ON THE FIELD AT URBANA UNIVERSITY?

WHEN WE WON THE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP LAST YEAR. IN 2008, WE WENT 1-10, AND IT WAS A ROUGH SEASON LEARNING FOCUS ON DOING YOUR JOB TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY. THE NEW COACHES' SYSTEM AND JUST ACCLIMATING TO COLLEGE EVEN WHEN WE HANG OUT TOGETHER, WE'VE GOT EACH FOOTBALL. THEN THE NEXT COUPLE YEARS, WE DID WELL, BUT OTHERS BACKS, AND WE ALL KNOW IT. WERE ALWAYS AT AVERAGE OR JUST ABOVE AVERAGE. THEN FINALLY LAST YEAR, ALL THE BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS PAID OFF. 6. OVER YOUR 4 YEARS AT URBANA, YOU HAVE WINNING THAT CHAMPIONSHIP REALLY MEANT SOMETHING. IT TRUST THE GUY NEXT TO YOU TO DO HIS JOB SO YOU CAN

EARNED A REPUTATION AS A PLAYER WILLING

TO SACRIFICE HIS BODY FOR THE TEAM.

I'VE

SEEN A PICTURE OF ONE OF YOUR FINGERS BENT AT NEARLY A 90-DEGREE ANGLE, AND I HEARD

WAS SO WORTH IT TO GO THROUGH EVERYTHING WE DID TO REACH THAT GOAL.

10. LASTLY, WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN

YOU WERE BACK ON THE PRACTICE FIELD

THE NEXT 5 TO 10 YEARS?

OVER THE YEARS AND HOW YOU OVERCOME THEM

OPPORTUNITY PRESENTS ITSELF. IF NOT, I'LL USE MY COLLEGE

MOMENTS LATER PLAYING THROUGH THE PAIN. TELL US ABOUT SOME OF YOUR WORST INJURIES I

ETHAN

MANHANDLES ANOTHER DEFENSIVE

CENTRAL STATE UNIVERSITY DURING HIS SOPHOMORE CAMPAIGN. LINEMAN FROM

AND TAKE THE FIELD EVERY SATURDAY.

PROBABLY THE WORST INJURY I'VE PLAYED THROUGH IS A

WOULD LOVE TO CONTINUE TO PLAY FOOTBALL IF THAT

ON THE BUSINESS SIDE OF THINGS, AND I'LL BE MARRIED TO MY FIANCÉ CHRISSY.

JOHN GORE BAND DIRECTOR

CHEER/BAND

In the fall of 2002, The Royal Blues was launched with only 8 members. The band functioned primarily as a pep band the first 2 years, performing at University athletic contests and providing music for special events on campus. All along however, the goal was to build a marching band. The Royal Blues increased in size quickly, and by the beginning of August 2004, the marching band was formed. The Royal Blues now perform at all home football games as well as one away game. The Royal Blues also perform at most University events, including the ground breaking ceremony for the Student Center and Blue Knight Stadium. In addition to marching band, The Royal Blues performs as concert and pep bands.

JOE WEBB

DYNAMIC DEEP THREAT JOE WEBB RETURNS FOR HIS THIRD SEASON AS A TOP TARGET FOR QUARTERBACK D.J. MENDENHALL. THE FORMER HIGH SCHOOL RIVALS HAVE EXHIBITED AN UNCANNY ABILITY TO CONNECT AT KEY TIMES SINCE ARRIVING ON CAMPUS AS HERALDED FRESHMEN IN 2010. GROWING UP IN NEIGHBORING FOOTBALL-CRAZED COMMUNITIES MECHANICSBURG AND WEST JEFFERSON, IT’S EASY TO UNDERSTAND WHY MENDENHALL-TO-WEBB HAS WORKED SO WELL FOR THE BLUE KNIGHTS. LAST YEAR, WEBB AVERAGED 25.1 YARDS PER RECEPTION, LEADING ALL OF DIVISION II. IN 2012, THE MENDENHALL-TO-WEBB CONNECTION MAY BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER AS URBANA’S RECEIVING CORPS IS ONE OF THE TEAM’S MOST DEPLETED GROUPS. FORTUNATELY, WEBB WON’T MIND THE EXTRA WORK. I'D SAY OUR #2 RANKING IS PRETTY BALL AS HARD AS HIM. S ANDERS S IUS WORKED REALLY HARD THIS ACCURATE. THE LAST GAME OF THE YEAR WILL OFF THE FIELD, I'D PROBABLY SAY MY MOM. SHE'S OFFSEASON. I THINK HE'LL STEP UP AND HAVE A BIG DECIDE THE CHAMPIONSHIP. AT THE END OF THE ALWAYS BEEN THE ONE PUSHING ME TO PLAY YEAR. OGLETREE AND BUSBEE WORKED HARD TOO, YEAR, WE'RE ALWAYS PLAYING REALLY GOOD BALL, SPORTS AND HELPING ME HOLD MY LIFE SO THEY'LL PUSH EVERYONE AND WE'LL HAVE A SO I THINK WE'LL HAVE A GOOD CHANCE TO MAKE IT TOGETHER , AND SHE ' S ALWAYS SUPPORTED LOT OF OPTIONS. 10 QUESTIONS WITH BLUE KNIGHT

DAVID McCOMAS

DAVID MCCOMAS FIRST BURST ONTO THE BLUE KNIGHT SCENE IN 2009, BUT HE ALMOST BECAME AN AFTERTHOUGHT NEVER DETERRED, MCCOMAS BOUNCED BACK WITH A STRONG SPRING TO REMIND EVERYONE HOW ELECTRIFYING HE CAN BE. HIS BREAKOUT FINALLY CAME LAST YEAR AS HE FINISHED WITH 55 TACKLES, INCLUDING 9.5 FOR A LOSS. HE ALSO BLOCKED HIS SECOND CAREER KICK. ROAMING THE DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD FROM HIS DEMON POSITION, MCCOMAS WAS IN ON MORE PLAYS THAN ANY OTHER BLUE KNIGHT DB EXCEPT FOR PRE-SEASON ALL-AMERICAN JUAN MCKEEVER. NOW, MCKEEVER IS GONE, ALONG WITH FIRST TEAM ALL-REGION SELECTION WES EDWARDS, BUT MCCOMAS IS MORE THAN HAPPY TO PICK UP THE SLACK AND ENJOY HIS TURN IN THE BLUE KNIGHT SPOTLIGHT.

AFTER REDSHIRTING HIS FIRST YEAR AND SEEING HIS SECOND SEASON CUT SHORT BY INJURY.

1. WHAT ARE THE TEAM'S 2012 GOALS? THE TEAM GOALS ARE TO WIN THE GLVC, MAKE THE NATIONAL PLAYOFFS, SEND OUR SENIORS OUT AS WINNERS, GRADUATE 100% OF OUR SENIORS, HAVE A TEAM GPA OF 3.0, MAKE THE TOP 20 IN THE NATION IN TURNOVER MARGIN, AND THERE ARE A FEW MORE. THE "U" OUTSIDE OF OUR LOCKER ROOM HAS ALL OF THEM. 2. WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL GOALS?

BLUE KNIGHT SPOTLIGHT

I' D

LIKE TO GET MAYBE

50

TACKLES AND

3

INTERCEPTIONS, BUT I DON'T REALLY FOCUS ON PERSONAL GOALS.

PERSONALLY, I WANT TO SEND OUR SENIORS

OUT AS WINNERS AND MAKE THE NATIONAL PLAYOFFS.

THEN, ONCE WE GET THERE, I WANT THE TEAM TO GO AS DEEP INTO THE PLAYOFFS AS WE CAN. 3. THE COACHING STAFF EXPERIENCED A FEW CHANGES OVER THE OFFSEASON. HOW'S THE DEFENSE DEALING WITH THE CHANGE AND WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE NEW DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR?

I THINK THAT WE'RE HANDLING THE ADVERSITY PRETTY WELL. IT'S BASICALLY THE SAME DEFENSE WITH SOME DIFFERENT CALLS. I THINK WE'RE PRETTY CONFIDENT, AND WE 'RE WILLING TO PUT IN THE WORK TO ACCOMPLISH OUR GOALS. COACH SMITH BRINGS AN INTENSITY TO THE GAME THAT I LIKE TO SEE IN A DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR. HE HAS A PASSION FOR THIS GAME, AND HE GETS US FIRED UP AND READY TO GO. 4. URBANA WAS PICKED TO FINISH 2ND WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE NEW CONFERENCE? IN THE GLVC.

I'M HAPPY THAT WE GOT TO JOIN THIS NEW CONFERENCE

US THIS YEAR.

AND PARTICIPATE IN A CONFERENCE WITH AN AUTOMATIC

I THINK

HE'S A STRONG DEFENDER ON AN ISLAND. HE'S GOING TO HAVE A BID TO THE NATIONAL PLAYOFFS. I KINDA LIKE BEING #2 STRONG SEASON AND BE A STRONG DEFENDER. IN THE RANKINGS. IT TAKES THE TARGET OFF OUR BACKS, BUT PRESEASON RANKINGS AREN'T REALLY IMPORTANT. 8. YOU ENDED YOUR HIGH SCHOOL CAREER WE GOTTA TAKE IT ONE GAME AT A TIME, AND IF AS DAYTON CARROLL'S ALL-TIME LEADING EVERYTHING GOES WELL AND WE WIN OUT, IT WILL SET RUSHER. DO YOU MISS PLAYING ON OFFENSE? ANY CHANCE WE SEE YOU CARRYING THE BALL UP THAT 1 VS. 2 MATCHUP IN WEEK 11. AGAIN BEFORE YOUR CAREER IS OVER? 5. WHAT'S YOUR BIGGEST STRENGTH ON THE FIELD AT THIS POINT OF YOUR CAREER? I DON'T THINK SO. I LOVED RUNNING THE BALL, BUT NOW THAT I'M PLAYING DEFENSE, I LIKE THE HUNGER AND THE I WOULD SAY MY BIGGEST STRENGTH WOULD BE MY "WANT-TO" TO GET TO THE BALL AS QUICKLY AS YOU PHYSICALITY AND BLOCK DESTRUCTION. I LIKE SHEDDING CAN. I LIKE PLAYING WITH THAT FIRE TO GET THE BALL. BLOCKS AND GETTING TO THE BALL AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. OFFENSE SEEMS EASY TO ME NOW. THEY START A PLAY AND THEY ALREADY KNOW WHAT THEY'RE GOING TO DO. 6. WHAT'S THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT ON DEFENSE, YOU HAVE SO MANY MORE THINGS TO LEARN. ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD DURING YOUR CAREER YOU GOTTA DO ALL THESE THINGS BEFORE THE BALL AT UU? SNAPS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE OFFENSE IS TRYING TO DO BASED ON DOWN AND DISTANCE. THEN, WHEN THE BALL HONESTLY, IT WAS PROBABLY WHEN WE WENT AND IS SNAPPED, YOU HAVE TO JUST REACT AND I LIKE THAT. PLAYED AT TUSCULUM. I WAS A FRESHMAN REDSHIRT. I YOU WANT YOUR DEFENSE TO ACT KINDA LIKE A BRICK REMEMBER IT BEING SO HOT. IT WAS A REALLY CLOSE WALL WILLING TO DO ANYTHING TO STOP THE OFFENSE. GAME AND THEY WERE NATIONALLY RANKED. WE HAD A LEAD LATE, BUT THEY DROVE DOWN THE FIELD ON THE 9. WHO HAS INSPIRED YOU THE MOST ON LAST DRIVE AND BEAT US. AND OFF THE FOOTBALL FIELD? HE'LL MAKE PLAYS.

7. IN LAST YEAR'S MEDIA GUIDE, SENIOR ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD, I WOULD SAY MY BIGGEST WES EDWARDS CORRECTLY PREDICTED A INSPIRATION HAS COME FROM MY OLDER BROTHER. I'VE BREAKOUT SEASON FOR YOU. WHO'S ON YOUR ALWAYS FOLLOWED IN HIS FOOTSTEPS. WE BOTH PLAYED LIST OF BREAKOUT PLAYERS ON THE DEFENSE RUNNING BACK EARLY, AND WE EVEN SPENT SOME TIME IN THIS YEAR? THE SAME BACKFIELD IN HIGH SCHOOL. HE WAS ALWAYS JUST AN EXCEPTIONAL ATHLETE WHEN HE RAN THE BALL, I REMEMBER SEEING THIS QUESTION IN LAST YEAR'S MEDIA AND I TRIED TO BE AS GOOD AS HE WAS. TRYING TO KEEP GUIDE. I THINK OUR BREAKOUT PLAYER IS GOING TO BE UP WITH MY OLDER BROTHER MADE ME THE PLAYER I AM KENYA COOMBS. HE'S GOING TO PLAY CORNERBACK FOR TODAY. OFF THE FIELD, IT'S MY PARENTS. REALLY MY FAMILY IN GENERAL, BUT MY PARENTS HAVE BEEN MY BIGGEST SUPPORTERS, AND NOT JUST IN FOOTBALL. I USED TO PLAY BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL, AND I REMEMBER WHEN MY DAD WOULD TAKE ME TO INDY TO PLAY BASKETBALL. I DON'T THINK THEY'VE EVER MISSED A GAME OF MINE UP TO THIS POINT. 10. LASTLY, WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF 5 TO 10 YEARS?

IN

#43 DAVID MCCOMAS BLOCKS HIS SECOND AGAINST L INCOLN UNIVERSITY IN 2011.

CAREER KICK IN THE SEASON FINALE

HOPEFULLY, I WILL HAVE A TEACHING POSITION AFTER GETTING MY TEACHING DEGREE FROM URBANA. I'D LIKE TO BE NEAR DAYTON BECAUSE THAT'S WHERE MOST OF MY FAMILY LIVES. HOPEFULLY, I'LL BE STARTING A FAMILY TOO.

BLUE KNIGHT BOOSTER CLUB In a very short period of time, the Urbana University Athletics Department has developed a very proud tradition of excellence. Our program has been committed to the development of our student-athletes and their success both during and after their time at Urbana University. In effort to support their success, today’s changing times have created new challenges for all of us. In order for our valued student-athletes to compete at the highest possible level we need the support of people like you. As many of you know, our teams have recently transitioned to Division II in the highly competitive NCAA. Our student-athleteswill compete against some of the finest athletes in the country. The generosity of caring individuals provides the support necessary for our student-athletes to excel at this extremely high level. Today’s student-athletes face more challenges than ever. Along with the high demands of practice and training, travel, community involvement and competition, it is our student-athletes greatest responsibility and commitment to achieve at a high level of academic success. This requires a tremendous amount of support from our faculty, administration, staff members, and our most valuable resource, the parents and friends of our University. Your donation may support an individual program, the scholarship fund, or facility improvement as you so choose. Most of all, thank you for your friendship and your valued support of the Blue Knights athletic department. GO BLUE KNIGHTS! Director of Athletics. Doug Young, M.S.
