Disney Cruise:
Experience the
‘Magic’
Together! What do Mickey Mouse and Captain America have in common? They are both part of Disney’s Marvel at Sea. We are big Disney fans so when the opportunity to take a Disney cruise came along we jumped at the chance. We had never been on a Disney cruise before. The whole family was super excited and rightfully so! Our Marvel at Sea Disney cruise would take us to two ports of call; Grand Cayman and Castaway Cay. So off we went sailing away on the Disney Magic. As we boarded, Disney staff were there to announce our arrival to the entire ship. Talk about a welcome! Every day was filled with endless food, fun, and sun. It was all thanks to those remarkable cast of Disney characters, like Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Chip and Dale and all the princesses, including Cinderella and Tiana. Since it was Marvel at Sea cruise, a long list of superheroes were on board, including Spiderman, Ironman, and the Black Panther. It was a jam-packed five days at sea.
Food choices are vast and there is something for everyone. For dinner, we rotated through the ship’s three sit-down restaurants, Lumiere’s, Rapunzel’s, and the Animator’s Palate. We had an assigned rotation to those restaurants. At each dinner, our whole family was engaged with unique experiences. At times it felt more like dinner theatre than just eating at a restaurant.
The Food
If you want to pay a little extra you can book a reservation at Palo, the adult-only restaurant on the ship. While on board, you also have access to 24-hour room service (also included). Enjoy a wide variety of food options around the pools on deck 9, where you can pick up burgers, pizza, deli sandwiches, ice-cream and assorted drinks. Your family will love all the choices readily available.
Cabanas is a buffet-style eating. This is where we ate breakfast and lunch each day. It is not your only choice but it is definitely offers convenience to families especially if you have picky-eaters.
Entertainment choices include Character Meet and Greet events, little kids splash pad, water slides, swimming pool, non-stop movies by the pool deck and first-run movies in the movie
Before our cruise, friends and family had told us to expect some amazing food on board. And they were so right! An unlimited amount of food is included in the overall cruise price. You can eat at several places on the ship.

Six Tips for Enjoying a Great Family Cruise 1. Bring Refillable Water Bottles:
Refillable water bottles will help your family stay hydrated and drink less pop. You have access to a 24-hour self-serve pop station. Fortunately, there is water there too!
2. Prepare for Motion Sickness:
theatre. Your family is sure to enjoy the spectacular productions happening nightly in the Walt Disney Theatre. These high-caliber shows offer incredible entertainment value for both children and adults.
The Parties
Expect a party on the ship every night. For our first night we attended a welcome party. The next night was a spectacular Marvel party, complete with characters and fireworks. There was also a pirate party (Pirates on the Caribbean) so your children may want to pack their pirate costume and join the fun.
The Clubs
On board you will find several clubs for children of all ages. Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab are for children ages 3 to 12. The Edge Club is for the tweens and for teenagers, there’s the Vibe Club. In a nutshell, it seems that Disney Cruises has thought of everything which is why we enjoyed a very memorable (and truly magical) family vacation together! •
Christy is a travel loving mom to two active, sand-loving boys ages 2 and 4 years old. When not, busy scoping out best travel destinations for her family to see she enjoys spending time shopping, cooking and relaxing with a good book.
We didn’t have too much trouble with this, but we did bring medicine with us just in case. We also had non-medicated options too. Disney staff advised that we should eat often which was a valuable tip (motion sickness has less of an impact on a full stomach apparently).
3. Minimal Cash Needed:
You need not worry about bringing much cash on board or on Castaway Cay. Everything is charged to your account via your Key to the World Pass card.
4. Excursions:
We booked excursions with Disney for the ports of call. Because we couldn’t get off the boat in Grand Cayman because of the weather, we got a refund. I would recommend Castaway Cay which has a fantastic beach for families.
5. Pack Light:
Don’t over pack because there are laundry facilities on board which is ideal for families.
6. Use the App:
Be sure to download the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app. Through the app you will be notified about all the daily fun activities happening on the ship and also reminded about your dining plans. This same app also enabled each family member to chat with each other while on board.

Beach Bound:
Five Kid-Friendly Beaches to Explore When you are looking for fun ways for the family to cool off during those warm summer days, head to the beach! Families living in on the Westcoast are fortunate to have incredible beaches within easy access. Spending an afternoon at the beach can be fun for children of all ages. It is also a time for parents to enjoy a relaxing setting. Hearing the joyful sounds of children running and playing at the beach adds to the ambience.
Panorama Beach - North Vancouver
The marine view here makes this area a sight-seeing paradise. The park includes a picnic area, playground, washrooms, change rooms and boat launch. Just steps away, is Deep Cove where you can stroll through a few little shops and stop to eat at a popular café or bistro. The beach overlooks the bay and there is an abundance of green space for your children to enjoy.
Sunset Beach - Vancouver
Your family is sure to love the scenic surroundings. Children can
watch the boats, or play beach volleyball. Here you will find ample spots for family picnics. The beach is located on the bike/walking path that connects to the Seawall. In the nearby distance you can see Granville Island. Take the family on the Seabus and be there in a matter of minutes.
New Brighton Beach - Vancouver
This could be your family favourite. The beach is inviting and there are plenty of picnic spots to choose from. Plenty of green space makes this an ideal location for playing outdoor games with your children. If your kids are bored with swimming at the same neighbourhood pool, try New Brighton. The pool is perfect for younger kids and has a few dedicated-lanes for lap-swimmers. Enjoy the amazing unobstructed view of the inlet and mountains in the distance.
Crescent Beach – South Surrey
This hidden gem is only minutes away from White Rock Beach. Crescent Beach is known for its quieter-pace and long beachfront walkway. When taking the family for a walk you will want to stop along the way for some sensational sightseeing. Your children will have hours of fun building a castle in the sand and wading in the ocean. When the tide is out, your children can enjoy searching for seashells. Find several popular eating spots within walking distance to the beach area.
Where History Comes to Life Where History Comes to Life
White Pine Beach - Port Moody
It is one of two beaches at Sasamat Lake. Since the water is fairly warm and calm, White Pine Beach is very popular for families with small children. You can find a concession stand near the bigger beach. Some families will bring along their own BBQs. Take your children for a walk across the floating bridge and take in all the sights and sounds of the area.

I got to sleep in my own bed maybe four times during those five weeks. It’s rough and I feel like it’s harder on me than it is for my family because my husband has really stepped in. If it wasn’t for him, this wouldn’t work. He’s so supportive and he’s so involved in the kids’ lives. He’s a blessing - an incredible dad. One of the moments that broke my heart was when I was working in Hamilton and told my girls that I would be at the spring concert. An eight-hour day turned out to be a 13-hour day so I missed the concert and still beat myself up. But my daughters told me: “It’s okay Mom. It wasn’t a big deal. I didn’t have a big part”. They were making me feel good because they knew how terrible I felt. It was the first concert I missed. You have to find that balance and as a mother, you have to keep going and make sure you know when to stop and when to keep going.

UBT: What do you think has been the hardest part of having a family and a demanding career? How do you balance everything? SP: I just finished five-weeks of travel. The first week was a vacation to Nicaragua with my family. I went on to Halifax and Los Angeles; then to Africa for my charity. After that, I went to British Columbia and Alberta.

UBT: Do you ever feel that pressure to be perfect? SP: Oh no! When I walk out, I’m wearing my Lulu pants and my hair is a mess. I have no make-up on and when I am out there, I don’t think people recognize me. I keep it real and if I mess up and people see it, it’s part of life. The minute I walk out of the studio, my make-up comes off. I get into my regular clothes and I am Sangita. I am mom to two girls and they see me on the street doing hopscotch. I don’t know what it means to be perfect. I am a goofball and love the fact that I can continue doing that. UBT: What advice would you give to a new parent, or soon-to-be parent? SP: Forget the guilt and make time for yourself. There is a point after you have a child when you can forget who you are. I believe that if you’re not happy, nobody around you is going to be happy. Take that time for yourself and find your happiness - whatever it is! UBT: When it comes to interviewing celebrities, you get to chat with some fun personalities. Do you have a favourite? SP: One of my favourites is George Clooney. When I met him for the first time, he made me coffee. I was just in awe that I had the opportunity to get to know him as just George. Then we sat down to do the interview. The second time I met him; he walked in by
himself and sat down. This was just before he was getting married so I asked about having kids. The third time I saw him was at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival). He comes up to me with his phone to show me pictures of his kids. Only a handful of people know how his kids look and he pulls out his phone to show me pictures of them. UBT: You are currently into your third season of HGTV’s Home to Win. What are your favourite moments from this season? SP: There’s so many. This season there are some really great competitions. Everyone is so incredible at HGTV. I have 29 new friends from the show and I love them all. •

Little Ears are Listening:
Communicating Effectively As parents, we communicate with others every day and we are unaware that we’ve developed our own key phrases, unconscious responses and slang when interacting with others. Children learn through what they observe from the people and situations around them. So whatever they see and hear most often, will influence them more frequently. Understandably parents find it really frustrating when requesting something from their children only to get a rude or cheeky response. Sometimes the reaction might be a one-word answer. Or children may deliberately ignore the request altogether. So what is a parent to do? You can help your children respond in a more appropriate way by offering them the phrase you would like them to use towards you. It’s a great way to utilize that instinctual copy-cat learning style children are so good at.
Six Effective Communication Techniques: 1. Give notification: Allow time for
children to process what is about to happen next; such as a new transition or change in routine.
2. Offer choices: Make sure the options you suggest are within the desired outcome. Avoid just asking questions that could result in a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response.
3. Use visuals or audio prompts
when possible: Sometimes children
respond better to audio or visual aids used to emphasize your message. For example, you may be talking about your family’s schedule next week and you might hold up a calendar so your child can understand better.
4. Validation: This can deflate potential
challenging situations almost right away. Just repeat back what your child has said or feelings expressed. This just reassures your child that he or she has been heard.
5. Boundary reminders: Always follow up with boundaries and expectations that have been previously discussed with your child to demonstrate consistency.
6. Repetition: Children learn best with repetition of the same teachings. Continuous patience from the adult teaching them is equally positive.
The most effective and positive communication starts with ‘connection’. When the adults choose to get on the same page as the child prior to communicating, a shift in energy takes place that automatically signifies to the child that ‘this adult is interested in me and values me’. This can boost self-esteem and self-worth thus having a phenomenal impact on a child’s confidence level! Taking the time and effort to effectively communicate demonstrates to your children that they are worth it and so are you! • Julie is a mom, an Early Childhood

Baby Waking Up Too Early? Here’s Why! It is a common dilemma. Baby is always waking up early and Mom and Dad are eager to know why. Many parents don’t know that the probable causes are related to what happens the day before. Here are some possible reasons why your baby is an early riser:
Late Bedtime
When a baby goes to bed too late the night before he or she can often have a very hard time sleeping beyond 5 am.
Sleep Disturbances
Early rising at the start of the day can sometimes be attributed to any of the following factors: a) Too much day sleep the day before, b) Too little day sleep the day before, c) Ending naps too early in the day, d) Ending naps too late in the day.
Babies are more prone to sleeping better before 4am. However beyond that time, they may start to experience lighter sleep closer to the morning. Additionally, if something disturbs your baby during that time (such as Dad getting up early for work or the neighbour starting his motorcycle), your little one is likely to wake up and not be able to get back to sleep.
Napping Transitions
Eating Too Early
Napping Inconsistencies
If your baby is transitioning from three naps to two; or from two to one, he or she may wake early the next morning. Additionally, a lengthy timeframe between the end of the final nap and bedtime can result in your baby waking up early the next morning.
New Milestones
Babies who are experiencing new milestones (such as crawling or walking), may wake early in the morning when the drive for sleep is diminished, to ‘practice’ their newfound skill. When they start to ‘stir’ in the early hours of the morning, they might start standing up; pulling up in the crib, or simply crawling around the crib. The more active they become in the crib, the harder it will be for them to settle back down into sleep mode.
Overtiredness
Babies that are consistently sleep deprived or carrying a ‘sleep debt’, will rise early each morning and never seem to ‘catch up’.
Overscheduling
When a baby is overscheduled and experiences too much stimulation during the day, he or she may often wake early the following morning. Too many car/stroller naps and outings can contribute to this overstimulation.
Bedroom Lighting
The lighting in your baby’s bedroom can be very problematic in spring and summer particularly. Like adults, some babies are simply unable to sleep well in a room that is too bright.
16 | www.urbanbaby.ca | summer 2018
It is not unusual for a baby who has been habitually fed in the early hours of the morning to wake up in anticipation of an early feeding and not be able to get back to sleep.
Not Eating Enough
We always feed for optimal nutritional practices, but we also need to feed for optimal sleep practices. The two can work hand in hand. Let’s say a 10-month old baby is eating chunks of soft food three times per day and seven milk feedings per day. Most likely, this baby is not consuming sufficient solid food and overcompensating with more milk feedings. If those milk feedings are inadequate, chances are the baby is not getting sufficient nutrition to last him or her through the entire night (10 plus hours). Another way to encourage a good sleeping routine is by teaching your baby to ‘self-soothe’. So no matter when your baby wakes in the night or in the early morning hours, he or she can go back to sleep without assistance. This accomplishment can be a big breakthrough when trying to get your baby to sleep well through the night on a consistent basis. •

A Parent’s Guide: Understanding Your Toddler’s Development
So many stages of toddler development can be puzzling for parents. Just when you think you have figured out what is going on, your little one appears to be going through another stage! Learning more about the developmental stages of a toddler’s brain can be very helpful to parents.
12-18 Months:
Soon after your child turns one (or when your child starts walking) he starts ‘getting into everything’. Sometimes when a child is between 12 months and 18 months parents can feel very overwhelmed because their child’s ‘concentration’ seems to have disappeared as he begins exploring everything.
tasting, hearing and sight. So that is what your child’s body is telling him to do. How do those leaves feel on that plant they have looked at for so many months? And what happens if they bang the pot on the ground hard? Or how far can they throw it? At this stage, toddlers are little explorers.
This behaviour of course, is very normal. Though he can now walk, he may not do it very well at first. It is his job to practice continuously in order to get those movements perfected.
You might catch yourself repeating: “No, don’t touch that. No…No…No…” Your toddler will eventually tune you out. Your ‘no’ will either get ignored or will encourage more of the disobedient behavior. He may learn that his actions elicit a response from you. This attention pulls you away from what you are doing (cell phone, dishes, laundry, etc.) so your child becomes thrilled with the outcome, even though it may be negative.
Now that your child can walk, his hands are free to explore. And he wants to touch everything! Children learn best by using all of their senses. He is experiencing the world through touching,

TIP:
Try to be clear with a STATEMENT and the ACTION required:
• “That is a plant. We need to be gentle with the leaves.” Show your child how.
• “The oven is hot. I cannot let you touch it because it might burn you.” And move the child away.
• “The table is not for climbing/I cannot let you climb on the table…feet on the floor.”
18-36 Months:
At this stage your child is now walking and climbing. He had time to practice and perfect many gross motor movements. Now he is working more on fine motor movements. It may seem that your toddler is able to focus again and sit for longer periods of time. He is working on connecting the hand and the brain. His primary focus has shifted to language, acquiring and verbalizing. Your toddler’s mind is advanced in cognition but verbally he may not be able to vocalize all that he wants to say. Because of this, he gets frustrated often. Children at this age are willful, ego centric, and highly emotional.
give your toddler, the better. He wants to practice and perform simple jobs that he sees around his house. Your toddler may seem to fluctuate between highly emotional states quickly and drastically. These emotions may appear to be totally ridiculous, but for him they are very intense and real. It is important for your child to feel acknowledged and his feelings validated. By naming the emotions, he will be able to understand how he feels and eventually be empathetic towards others. There is an alternative to getting overwhelmed. By using these tips and understanding the various stages of toddler development, you can create a respectful relationship with your child. • Christie is Internationally trained in Montessori from birth to twelve years old. For the past 8 years she has been running the only
Montessori Parent-Participation program in Western Canada for children from birth to three years old. Currently, she teaches at North Star Montessori Elementary School in North Vancouver www.northstarmontessori.ca.
Do you feel your toddler has a strong will? Well, in actuality every child of this age is ‘willful’. His will is developing and it is crucial that he exercises his capacity to make choices. Your child will eventually be able to make choices based on understanding; be responsible for the choices he makes which will then make him confident and independent. The more opportunity you provide your child to make a choice within your boundaries, the more secure and calm he will feel.
TIP:
Remember these three things when setting limits with your child: 1. Acknowledge 2. Set the limit 3. Offer choices
• “I see that you are really upset that we have to go
home now. Would you like to walk or I can pick you up?”
• “I know you really want a cookie but soon it will
be dinnertime. Would you like to help me chop the veggies or set the table?” taking your toy away. I cannot let you hit him, so you can either ask for it back nicely, or walk away and find something else to play with.”
Children under three are focused on their own self-development. We call them ‘egocentric’ because they are only concerned with themselves and their own abilities. The more real tasks you can summer 2018 | www.urbanbaby.ca | 19

When the Heat is On: Smart Cooks Look for Inspiration
There are many reasons to love summer. The season brings us a bounty of sunshine along with a bounty of delicious locally-grown fruits and veggies. What’s not to love? Now hold on a moment. Thoughts of endless days of hot weather are great but they have one glaring downside. When the heat is on outside, the last thing we want to do is prepare meals over a hot stove. Thankfully there are several family-friendly meals that involve little or no cooking. Here are some inspiring ideas to get you started:
Idea #1: Think Breakfast and Beyond
If it makes a healthy breakfast or lunch, it can make an equally healthy dinner. For example, a veggie-filled egg scramble or omelet with some toast requires very little time at the stove. Sandwiches and full-meal salads are fast and easy to prepare. No heat required. My favourite meal in my childhood was ‘canned tuna salad’, some crusty bread, and sliced farm-fresh tomatoes and cucumber. We finished this meal with fresh fruit for dessert (sometimes accompanying ice cream). Dinner couldn’t be simpler. My mom shared with me that she prepared that meal as a way to feed the family when she felt lazy during hot summer days. She was surprised to hear that her ‘lazy’ meal was actually my childhood favourite. Who knew? For an even healthier version of tuna salad, you can use mashed avocado and a dash of lemon juice instead of mayo along with canned Pacific Ocean, albacore tuna.
Idea #2: Keep Kitchen Gadgets Handy
Summer is the time to get your kitchen gadgets in action. Often we associate the slow cooker with winter meals such as chili or stew. Your slow cooker can be just as convenient during the warmer months. Simply place your ingredients in your slow cooker in the morning. Plug it in and set it. Before you know it dinner is ready without any sweating over a hot stove. Now is a good time to pull out that rice cooker. A stir-fry requires minimal stove time and when paired with rice, a stir-fry dinner is super simple. For variety, make your own ‘Smoothie Bowl’ with pre-soaked chia seeds or hemp hearts at home. Use your Veggie Slicer/Shredder/Spiralizer. Devote some time for slicing and dicing varieties of veggies in advance which are then
stored in your refrigerator so you can make a salad in a matter of minutes. Sliced cucumber and carrot strings also make a handy snack to take along to the park or playground.
Idea #3: Plan Ahead
We know that the hot days are coming. So, use your time on cooler days to prepare for the upcoming hot days. Did you know that you can keep cooked grains like brown rice and farro in the freezer? Cooked lentils and beans freeze very well too. You can also freeze portions of leftover meat, chicken and fish. When I know that a heat wave is coming, I make hard-boiled eggs a day or two before the hot weather hits. Surprise your family with a ‘Build-Your-Own Full-Meal Salad Bar’ using defrosted grains and protein; fresh local veggies and a choice of dressings. Your children will love making their own choices. And you will love not needing to turn on the stove.
Idea #4: Look to Cuisine from Hot Countries
Look to the cuisine ideas from countries in hot climates for more inspiration. Most children like tacos. Preparation is quick and easy. Get a pre-cooked chicken from the grocery store (or, some defrosted from your freezer). Lay out all the toppings you like such as tomatoes, bell peppers, shredded cabbage or lettuce, avocado, salsa and sour cream. It’s another build-your-own meal your children will love. Another hot weather meal idea comes from Thailand. Salad rolls are very refreshing on hot summer days. Use whatever veggies and protein-rich foods your family enjoys. I am a big fan of tofu as protein because it doesn’t require any cooking. •

Staying Overnight at Summer Camp: Is Your Child Ready?
Sending a child to overnight summer camp is a big decision. There is no right or wrong answer because there is no set age when a child should be ready to leave his parents. Before deciding, consider the pros and cons to determine if your child is ready. One thing to remember is to go over what being at camp will entail. Having a buddy can help ease the apprehension. In fact, many children opt to go to camp outside of their community if they know some of their friends from school will be attending. Either way, it is important to involve them in these decisions. Here are some ways children benefit from going to summer camp:
• Learn independence and how to thrive on a daily basis • Build social skills and learn to adapt to new situations • Focus on a hobby, sport or certain interest Preparing your child for overnight camp involves several steps. It takes time to adapt to being separated from Mom, Dad and siblings for long periods of time. Homesickness is something that will most likely occur and you and your child need to be ready for it. Missing home; and missing Mom and Dad, is a normal response to being away for the first time. When choosing a summer camps, it pays to do your research. Use the Internet as well as word-of-mouth. Ask friends and family for their recommendations and ask their kids as well.
Consider what your child is interested in, and research accordingly. Some camps focus primarily on such activities as swimming, tennis or dance. By choosing carefully you can be assured that your child will have the best opportunity for a fun-filled, exciting first summer away from home. Costs vary depending on the type and length of the camp; as well as location and amenities. I discovered that average pricing ranged from $400 and up per week. Many camps offer financial assistance for lower income families so double check if the camp you are looking at offers this option. Another great way to seek out alternatives is to contact your local community center. Ask the staff if they have any suggestions (as staff are often very knowledgeable and may be able to help you narrow down your search). Deciding whether or not to send your child to overnight camp for the first time is a big deal. Do your best and enjoy the fact that your little one is growing up. Consider it just another milestone like that first smile or those first steps. When your child experiences staying overnight at summer camp, the enjoyment of “exploration” and “new adventures” can more than make up for those initial feelings of “uneasiness”. • Chelene is a Vancouver writer and poet. She and her 12-year old daughter are always on the lookout for fun and new summer activities.
