“Kingsford is such a fascinating melting pot of cuisines,” says Helen Yee, founder of Sydney food blog Grab Your Fork. “It’s a known hub of Indonesian restaurants, but you’ll also find Hunanese, Shanghainese and Szechuan as well as Japanese, Malaysian, Singaporean, Chilean, Taiwanese and Thai. And with so many uni students in the area, many are priced to suit those on a budget.” This high proportion of students, thanks to a location on the doorstep of UNSW (University of New South Wales), coupled with a strong migrant population (67.3 percent of the suburb’s population are second-generation immigrants, according to April 2011 ABS statistics) sees Kingsford serve as a hub for community. service is a front for a culinary revelation. Try succulent pieces of chicken marinated with turmeric, galangal and the stickysweet Indonesian soy sauce kecap manis and grilled for six hours on hot charcoal. Like Kreta Ayer, a Singaporean mainstay where you can order dishes like spicy soft shell crab or, if you’re feeling brave, fried fish head bee hoon, Ayam Goreng, which opened 17 years ago, doesn’t pander to mainstream diners. It aims to please the students, expats and locals that have flocked here for years, instead. “Ayam Goreng 99 is a great value eatery for Indonesian food, I definitely recommend the grilled chicken thigh,” says Yee, adding that an evening at Manpuku – a ramen joint, where you can ask for a bowl of rich tonkotsu ramen and customise at a self-serve condiment station, was her last great Kingsford meal. “Kingsford Chinese is hard to beat for value, especially its Shandong chicken and salt and pepper flounder. Also, try heading to Rosebery Martabak for martabak, an Indonesian street food pancake. The savoury version is a crisp pocket filled with meat, seafood or vegetables but they use a different batter that’s more like a crumpet for the sweet version, folded around fillings like chocolate, peanuts and banana.” Add Dong Dong Noodles, a Chinese fixture famous for fresh, hand-pulled noodles, Niji Sushi, an upmarket Japanese diner serving elaborate sushi and yuzu cocktails and Phoodle, a hip Vietnamese hangout pouring exemplary espresso and it’s clear that the area has something for all kinds of tastes. “You could easily go on a food safari in Kingsford and eat dishes all day that you’ve never tried before,” Yee points out.

On Sunday afternoons at Albee’s Kitchen, friends convene over nasi goreng, lone grandmas enjoy Malay-style fried chicken with teh terak (pulled tea) and couples dip paper-thin pieces of roti canai into pools of beef rendang. Albee Thu, who opened the restaurant on Anzac Parade to be closer to the Indonesian and Malaysian customers that live in the area, says that she owes her following to the fact that everything she serves is authentic and homemade.

We do dishes you won’t find anywhere else.” Thu says that in the time she’s been in the area, the suburb’s culinary credentials have been on the rise. “So many new restaurants have opened and Anzac Parade has become a real food street,” she laughs. “Everyone who wants to eat good food knows that they should come to Kingsford.”
