Taxis in Perth are often hard to come by, funds better spent on local food, wine or fashion. Perth, Fremantle and Joondalup provide free Central Area Transit (CAT) buses within each central city location so you can jump on and off, soaking up the sights. You won’t wait longer than 15 minutes (some come every five) before the next CAT rolls around. See routes and timetables at www.transperth.wa.gov.au.

The average temperature during summer makes the 19 metropolitan beaches on offer all the more inviting. Check out the iconic Cottesloe Beach with its pylon regularly changing colours due to late night paint jobs from rival surf life saving clubs.

hidden treasures The small bar scene in the Perth CBD has exploded with cosy watering holes dotting laneways, rooftops and basements amidst the business hub. Northbridge’s Mechanics Institute won the current Bartender Magazine’s Australian Small Bar of the Year awards, joining 2014 victor, Varnish on King.

Street Smarts Discover Perth’s answer to Latin street food by the beach.

Photography by Jampal Williamson

Comida do Sul is all about bossa nova, floral shirts, and easy chairs by the beach. Owners Joel Rees and Brazilian-born Dany Flauzino came up with the idea whilst drinking coconuts on the beach in Brazil.

Tell us a little about the beginnings of Comida do Sul. Where did the idea grow from? “My lovely wife Dany moved to Perth from Sao Paulo in Brazil and she would cook our family beans and rice everyday. During these feasts I had a realisation that this could be the answer to our lives as you can’t go out and eat Brazilian beans and rice dishes anywhere in Perth. So I guess I felt obligated that Dany and I would be the duo to introduce Brazilian goodness to Perth’s tastebuds.” What did you do before Comida do Sul? Joel: “Before we opened Comida do Sul I ran a removal company called The Smooth Movers and before that I was a photographer.” Dany: “I ran a small boutique art shop in Sao Paulo, Brazil before I met Joel and he dragged me to Perth.”. What does Comida do Sul mean? “The name Comida do Sul translates to ‘food of the south’, it’s kind of a slang way of saying food of South America aka Brazil. We represent Brazilian vibes in Perth.”

What inspires your menu? “We wanted to keep our menu traditional but also give our own interpretation of classic Brazilian lunch and dinner dishes. We create Brazilian fare but adapt the dishes slightly for the Australian market. Our main purpose to make the same food and flavours grandma would serve up to the everyday Brazilian.” How has travel influenced the business? “Travel is the key to life! Dany and I aim to travel for at least two months of a year as we get a lot of inspiration from our travels. It’s a great way to check out other international street food and culture, and keep fresh ideas coming in. We just got back from a trip to Sri Lanka and we’re already thinking that we’d love to bring some of the coastal beach vending vibes to Perth.” Why bring Brazilian food to Perth? “We both love the Brazilian culture and felt Perth needed a bit of spicing up. Starting a food truck is the best way to bring new and exciting dishes to the public.”

STYLE SEEKERS CAFÉS & RESTAURANTS 13

Comida do Sul was one of Perth’s first food trucks, what changes have you seen in the food truck scene since you started? “The food truck scene in Perth is slowly growing. Since we started a few years ago there are a lot more trailers rather than trucks popping up.” What’s the best thing about running a food truck business? “Having the freedom to take Brazilian fare to so many different places and people. There are not many jobs out there where you can spend the day serving coconuts and Brazilian food while enjoying live music at a festival or relish in Fremantle’s sunshine and sea breeze.”

14 CAFÉS & RESTAURANTS STYLE SEEKERS

What do you believe sets Perth’s food and drink scene apart from those in other cities? “Perth’s food and drink scene has always seemed to lag behind other cities, but recently we are beginning to see it change. Our city is now producing some really great eateries and small bars – it’s getting exciting.” What’s your favourite way to spend a day in Perth? “In the mornings we love to head to one of Perth’s beaches and go for a long walk with our baby girl dog Mina and then head out for a swim or surf. Our afternoons and nights are spent grilling in the truck and serving our food to the people of Perth. We live and breathe Comida.”

Mercury rising: Perth 2016 hit list

A new wave of openings has put Perth on the vanguard of urban lifestyle. With local entrepreneurs breathing new life into the inner city and its suburbs, you’re spoiled for choice. Here is the definitive hit list of the hottest seven places to dine, shop and unwind in Perth in 2016. 16 STAY & EXPLORE STYLE SEEKERS

Long Chim

1. COMO THE TREASURY Housed in the historic 19th-century State Buildings, this newly revitalised hotel is poised to be Perth’s most luxurious place to stay, thanks to its two restaurants, bar and world-renowned Shambhala Urban Escape Spa. 2. LONG CHIM Celebrity chef David Thompson’s latest venture Long Chim in Perth’s new State Buildings is causing quite a stir. Be transported to the markets of Bangkok with a tantalising menu that combines traditional Thai food with contemporary flavours. Treat your tastebuds to beef with holy basil or chicken pilaf with turmeric and cardamom. 3. DAINTY DOWAGER This new neon-lit restaurant is Perth’s very first Asian Roasting House – and as you’d expect, has a focus on sizzling meat dishes. Think roast duck bao, pork belly lettuce cups, crispy soft shell crab, and dumplings galore. With an inventive cocktail menu, the well-stocked bar is definitely worth exploring, too. Wasabi Bloody Mary, anyone? 4. THE BLUE FLAMINGO Leederville Hotel’s outdoor courtyard has been transformed into a Caribbean-themed paradise, complete with tropical tunes. Let your hair down and sip on a selection of ice-cold rum and tequila cocktails.

5. STRANGE COMPANY This Fremantle small bar offers an extensive food and drinks list that shines the spotlight on cured meats, desserts and cheeses. Their collection of wine is worth a visit alone - they even have wine on tap. We suggest pairing a White Lady gin cocktail with the chocolate and hazelnut brownie. 6. JACK RABBIT SLIMS Perth’s cool kids flock to Jack Rabbit Slims, a late night live music venue, which plays host to local and international acts. The bar’s American diner-themed décor takes inspiration from the Tarantino classic Pulp Fiction, with alcoholic milkshakes completing the experience. 7. LAYUP CAFE You won’t find many chefs more passionate about brunch than those behind the menu at Layup, a Northbridge café that makes its own bread, donuts and pastries from scratch. Great coffee and decadent dishes (we love the Pressed Lamb Shoulder dish) combined with gorgeous décor make this cafe a must-visit.

Q&A

Wendy Martin, the new Artistic Director for the muchloved Perth International Arts Festival, is bringing a vibrant and energetic program to our city this season. Photography by Jampal Williamson

Tell us a little about yourself and your background in the arts. “My career began in television; I was an Arts Producer for ABC and SBS before I became a producer at the Sydney Opera House, producing and programing performance and dance. Before I came to Perth, I was working as the Head of Performance and Dance at the South Bank Centre in London for four and a half years.” Your grandfather is from Perth, can you tell us about him? “My grandfather was born in Perth in 1898 and he was an impresario, and he

ran the Tivoli circuit in Australia. In a way, I am doing exactly what he used to do, as he used to go around the world by ship to New York and London and buy shows to bring back to Australia.” What or who inspires you? “Artists inspire me because it is through their imaginations we get to see and understand and reimage the world. One of the artists in the Festival whom I am particularly inspired by is Brazilian chorographer Lia Rodrigues, who about 25 years ago started a dance company in the poorest favela in Rio de Janeiro and she has enabled people’s lives to change through dance and the arts.”

Why is the opening event for PIAF themed around the notion of ‘home’? “This theme of ‘home’ is a celebration of place and community, and of our history and our future through the imagination of some of the most evocative Western Australian artists. Many significant artists have come from West Australia both historically and currently, including acclaimed writer Tim Winton who writes about our landscape and our culture. If you have a look at the musicians we have The Waifs, John Butler, Tim Minchin, these are some of the biggest names in music and they all come from Western Australia.” What do you love about living in Western Australia? What is new in the 2016 PIAF program compared to past years? “We have tried really hard this year to look at the narrative threads that run through the whole Festival and keep all of these elements amalgamated throughout the program. So the themes and the ideas that are explored in the performance program are reflected in the Perth Writers Festival and so on. One of the narrative themes this year is the idea of empathy. I believe that through the simple art of conversation and understanding amongst each other the world can potentially become a better place, and art is such a brilliant way to help us see all kinds of different perspectives and create this conversation and empathy.” 36 ARTS & CULTURE STYLE SEEKERS
