WELCOME TO THE

winter edition of Style Seekers Join us as we venture out into the wintery days and crisp nights to unearth the best of Perth’s laneways, as well as the latest fashion, food and design destinations. We visit Northbridge’s new Alex Hotel and meet general manager Miles Hull to learn all about this beautiful boutique hotel with private balconies with rooftop views of colourful William Street and a complimentary service of vintage-styled bicycles for guests to explore Perth in style. Our coffee cravings are sated up the road at Daphne with creative couple Sophie and Adam. We also speak to the husband and wife duo behind East Perth’s Arrival Hall, an immaculately curated design mecca that showcases unique homewares from around the world. Venturing across the river to Victoria Park, we discover that local innovators have been hard at work. Seeking respite from the busy CBD, we crawl away for a weekend in the secluded natural paradise of Armadale, where tree-lined roads lead to craft breweries, art galleries and farm-to-fork restaurants. Perth is a city that refuses to hibernate during the colder months, and we hope that this winter issue inspires you to get out and explore everything it has to offer. Victoria Moxey Publisher

A moment with Daphne Photography Stephen Nicholls and Hannah Ford

Fresh from running an exhibition space from their home in North Perth, art and coffee aficionados Adam D Mitchell and Sophie Bower Johnston recently threw open the doors to Daphne Café .

A frontrunner in a new breed of eateries that are irrevocably shaping Perth’s café culture, Daphne Café in Northbridge serves up masterfully brewed coffee alongside artworks from emerging local talents. Read on to find out just how this eatery is elevating coffee to an art form. How would you describe Daphne to someone who has never visited? It’s a very simple neighbourhood coffee haunt. We pride ourselves on excellent subtle flavours in our coffee and we have a few different brew methods.

Tell us about your backgrounds. Why open a cafe? We both have arts backgrounds - Adam studied visual arts and Sophie studied architecture and art history. We had an opportunity to show emerging artists at our house as a way to provide an alternative space outside of the gallery circuit. We found ourselves wanting to purchase more work to support the arts and - being that cafe work is just something we had both experience in - it was a logical step to open our own space that gave us the freedom to fund our future plans of opening a gallery.

“Daphne is a calming place, for everyone.”

What elements of Perth’s coffee culture are you most passionate about? The under-appreciation of it, everyone talks about Melbourne’s coffee culture. Perth is building up and it’s getting exciting. I like that we are free to experiment and do things our own way. What is you signature winter drink? Piping hot filter coffee is always a winner. Where do you go in Perth when you’re short of inspiration? PICA (Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts).

If Perth was a coffee, what would it be? Cold brew, extra ice - super cool. Where would be find you both on a Saturday night? We normally go to the gigs recommended by the Semi-Decent street press. Usually, it’s music at the Bird or opening nights for independent art shows. Daphne Café 454 William St, Northbridge. T: 0473 196 322 5

Hay Street’s enex100 is offering free styling sessions from mid August, where you can discover the latest seasonal looks. We spoke to stylist Jan O’Loughlin about the importance of dressing well and creating a personal style. Why should someone use a stylist? I think every time-poor man and woman could use a stylist - as we all now realise, a stylist is not just for the stars. What advice to you most commonly find yourself giving? It’s really important for my clients to understand their bodyshape and to be comfortable with basic educational principles on how to dress their best. What are the standouts in this season’s winter fashion? I think the coat is a winter must-have and I know that Marcs have way too many to choose from in pastel pinks to the deepest ink black in luxe wool. A leather jacket is also a must-have. An eye for design Photography Stephen Nicholls and Hannah Ford

Bringing curated objects from across the globe to Perth, creative retailers Clem and Lisa Tay of Arrival Hall are injecting a refreshing sense of cool into the city’s design scene.

How would you describe Arrival Hall to someone who has never visited? Arrival Hall is a coming together of home and lifestyle objects from around the world. Our aim is to showcase a curated selection of some of the most exciting design from around the world, ranging from iconic designs to more obscure hard-to-find pieces. From Europe and America to Asia and Australia, we are constantly on the look out for great pieces. What is the secret to being a contemporary retailer? Being authentic and truly passionate about what we do and represent. For us, the store has never been about earning a living, but an extension of our love for design. Design is something we live and breathe and we hope our customers will be able to notice that. Tell me a little about your backgrounds. Has this defined Arrival Hall’s style? Over the years, we spent a good amount of time travelling together, particularly

throughout Europe and America. Lisa also spent some time doing fashion internships in New York and Hong Kong, after which we eventually found ourselves back in Perth. By that time our design interests had evolved to focus more heavily on interiors. The more we travelled, discovered and researched, the more we became increasingly aware of the amazing design and beautiful things that were out there, but not easily available here. We came across Boan’s Warehouse in East Perth during our hunt for a new place and loved how much the refurbished warehouse reminded us of New York apartments. Zoned for both residential and commercial use, we knew this was a one-off opportunity. Once we secured the place, we spent the following year planning the store and renovating our new home. That’s how Arrival Hall was birthed. How has travel influenced Arrival Hall? Our love for travel is probably what began this whole process and will continue to be vital in inspiring what STYLE SEEKERS FASHION & BEAUTY 31

we do. We make it a point to travel abroad regularly, in particular to the major design cities and events to keep our finger on the pulse and to discover what is happening and how things are being done in other parts of the world. Where do you go for creative inspiration? When we are home in Perth, we are constantly scouring the web, design magazines and social media for inspiration. Why bring international design to Perth? As beautiful a place as Perth is to live, being such an isolated city, we tend to be left out or late to the party on

everything! We felt it was time Perth joined the conversation while it was still happening. After all our travels, we were actually really disappointed that there was all this great design out there that wasn’t being represented at home. So we thought we would be part of the solution and made it our mission to bring some of it home with us. What would be the most sought after brand or product at Arrival Hall? Danish design company Menu knocks it out of the ballpark with their clever, unique and extensive range of products. In terms of trends, our marble, copper and brass products have been our bestsellers this season.

What are your style tips for winter? Geometric textile patterns, super soft wool throws and cushions will bring a touch of modern luxury into the home and great way to keep warm in style this winter. Materials such as brass, cork and oak can also instantly bring warmth into a space. What inspires you the most about Perth? We love that Perth is still very much a blank canvas, the market isn’t over-saturated and so there’s every opportunity for people to make a living out of their passion.

How would you describe Perth to someone who has never visited? Perth is like that unassuming kid in school who no one really notices and people tend to overlook because they’re not particularly fashionable or outspoken, but then one day you get the opportunity to get to know them and find out there’s way more to them than meets the eye and that there’s something incredibly special about them. We have all been involved in the hospitality industry in one way or another, so we loved the idea of creating an individual hotel that reflects those values with a distinct character and personality. 2. Why did Perth need a creative boutique hotel like Alex Hotel? Perth has emerged in recent years as a young, creative and modern city. With Perth’s growing profile as a great destination, our accommodation therefore needed to evolve. Alex Hotel reflects this modern approach to a new style of hotel being seen around the world.

4. What’s your favourite space in the hotel? Sitting on one of the outdoor terraces just off our mezzanine guest lounge. Its outside yet private and cosy. 5. How would you describe Perth to someone who has never visited? A new and emerging world city with a distinct laid back and relaxed vibe, with weather that is pretty hard to beat! Insider’s guide to Victoria Park and surrounds Photography Hannah Ford

Blazing a trail through Perth’s creative community scene, the Town of Victoria Park’s fusion of street art, sprawling public spaces and diverse eateries has transformed the once hidden inner city gem into an energetic hotspot. As you walk through the urban neighbourhood of Victoria Park en route to your morning espresso fix, keep your eyes peeled for imaginative artworks that are injecting riots of colour on random walls as part of PUBLIC2015’s street art project. From shark riding mermaids to multicoloured elephants, international and local artists have created evocative images that are cheekily tucked behind bars, boutiques and inside the odd café. Reviving the area’s abandoned spaces on the business and shopping hub of Albany Highway, four pop-up parks have been formed along the strip. These dynamic urban meeting spaces are the perfect resting spots, and often serenaded by buskers or artists who are set up nearby. Free Wi-Fi means that you can hold virtual business meetings or catch up on social media

from anywhere on the strip. If you’re not one to sit around, make your way to one of the ping pong tables set up by Public Outdoor Ping Pong. Hand painted by five local artists, these ping-pong tables are dotted around local parks. Enjoy a smoked salmon stuffed bagel at the John MacMillan Park Sunday Farmers Market and then challenge a friend to a game or two. Explore beyond the Albany Highway strip and visit Lathlain, a suburb experiencing revival in the hands of a creative town council. Public art, including a suspended sculpture by Sydney artist Damien Butler, sits alongside quirky cafés and boutiques in the Lathlain Place shopping precinct. A new bus stop with a built-in swing adds to the sense of youthful energy. STYLE SEEKERS STAY & EXPLORE 51

holiday destination

Hobart Long considered a picturesque yet sleepy offshore destination, the Tasmanian capital is undergoing a renaissance.

Known for its startling natural beauty and pure environment, Hobart’s newly intoxicating mix of heritage, culture and artisan cuisine is a drawcard for travellers—a status cemented by an appearance on Lonely Planet’s Top 10 places to visit this year. Australia’s second-oldest city now comes with plenty of attitude thanks, in part, to the opening of the provocative Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), the brainchild of eccentric local millionaire David Walsh.

The museum’s opening has acted as a magnet for creative types, with everyone from ex-Tetsuya chefs to the Violent Femmes’ Brian Ritchie flocking to the southern city. Accompanied by an explosion in retailer and boutique hotels, recent years have also seen the opening of distilleries and dining rooms dedicated to the state’s finest produce. With an eclectic events calendar—featuring everything from the famed yacht race to Taste of Tasmania—it’s no wonder the petite waterside city is topping itineraries.
