Alumnae enjoy 39th annual Mount Saint Joseph Picnic Alumnae and Ursuline Sisters and Associates joined hundreds of volunteers and thousands of hungry picnic goers on Sunday, Sept. 13 to celebrate the 39th annual barbecue picnic to benefit the retired Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph.

Many hands worked behind the scenes in the days and months leading up to Picnic day. The chair of Picnic 2009 was Nancy Mills A’72, Mount Saint Joseph Alumnae Association President.

Seasons of the ‘Spirit’

As I pondered the fall issue of The New Mount, I realized that as a Mount Saint Joseph “alum,” I have come to observe three seasons, instead of four, annually. I think of them as seasons of the ‘spirit’ at MSJ. The first season occurs in May when alumnae are invited back to the campus to renew and celebrate the spirit of our youth. This was the time of year of endless possibilities – the whole summer lay ahead when we were students and our whole lives lay ahead of us when we graduated.

By coming back to MSJ at this time, we renew the spirit that was so contagious in our youth.

The second season comes in the fall. In ‘the old days’ the start of the new school year fell on the Tuesday after Labor Day. Just as reliably, the Mount Saint Joseph picnic to benefit the retired sisters falls on the second Sunday in September. Once again we join together, but this time it is to thank and honor the Ursuline Sisters who taught us. (Many thanks to all alumnae who volunteered and supported our most recent picnic.)

The third and final season is observed in November when we join together to remember our classmates and faculty members who have passed away during the past 12 months. At this time we commemorate and commend to God their souls and the very ‘spirit’ of MSJ. All three seasons celebrate the things we learned at Mount Saint Joe a long time ago. We gather to renew, to give thanks and commemorate. The Memorial Mass will be on Nov. 7 in the MSJ chapel, with lunch to follow.

Two alumnae earn 2009 Maple Leaf awards Two Mount Saint Joseph alumnae received the Maple Leaf Award at the May 17 alumnae reunion banquet: Gertrude Hall Mayhew A‘49, retired as a civil service employee at the Finance Centers in Indianapolis and Fort Knox in 1992. She has two children, Chris and Renee (A’76) and four grandchildren.

Always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, Gertie’s accomplishments and commitments belies her fun-loving and positive attitude. Gertie’s life has revolved around St. Brigid School and Church in Vine Grove, Ky. She began her education with the Ursuline Sisters at St. Brigid Elementary, and in later years taught third grade and managed the school cafeteria. She was a member and president of the school PTA. She has served as sacristan, finance committee member and annual picnic volunteer.

Mount Saint Joseph, too, has benefited from Gertie’s energy and devotion. She served several terms as Alumnae Association president, serves on the Alumnae Weekend and Memorial Mass planning committees, and is a candidate to be an associate of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph.

A world traveler, Gertie has toured Italy and attended Mass at the Vatican celebrated by Pope John Paul II, attended Pope Benedict’s mass in New York City at Yankee Stadium, toured the Holy Land twice, and spent a mission trip on St. Vincent, Barbados.

One of her nominators says of Gertie, “Don’t let her fool you when she talks and acts like she could care less about lots of things. God has seen through that ‘fun-screen’ and has used her gifts in so many ways.”

She has three daughters and one grandson who will soon be joined by twin sisters in October.

A generous and cheerful person, Nancy is a tireless volunteer. She never does anything in a small way. Her heart is open and eager to help others.

Her days are divided between Sts. Joseph and Paul Church, Mount Saint Joseph, and anyone, anywhere in need. She is president of the MSJ Alumnae Association, chair of the Mount Saint Joseph picnic, Empty Bowls dinner committee member and Red Cross volunteer. She serves in the parish office, on the arts and environment committee, and is a Eucharistic minister. In addition, she became an associate of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph in 2008.

She keeps her graduating class together, urging them to participate in the Memorial Mass and to attend Alumnae Weekend, even in nonanniversary years.

Nancy’s family, like Gertie’s, contributed details and background information and joined her classmates in celebrating her well-deserved recognition.

Her classmates and nominators said, “She is a remarkable person, a perfect example of triumph over adversity.”

Alumnae Adventures GERT MARTIN BRUMLEVE A’54: Ben and I have been in South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia from Feb. 9 to March 9. I am forwarding a picture that was taken in Zambia at a village. These children make an imprint upon your heart that can never be erased. They have so little materially, but their hearts are so opened to their intuition and instincts. I felt a soul connection with them that will always be in my heart. I also had a reverse experience when we visited the classroom of the teenagers. I felt so much darkness and fear surrounding them. They are at a time of their life when they are coming into their sexuality, and instead of feeling the joy of the life that is unfolding within them, they are surrounded by signs that say, ”You will either be affected by AIDS or you will be infected with AIDS.” Coming into their sexuality is one of fear of disease and death rather than one of joy and the love of continuing life. Our whole trip was awesome in so many ways and one filled with many memories.

Brenda Greenwell Deibel A’59: (May 30, 2009) I am still full-time employed and own Deibel’s Greenhouse. We’ve just finished all spring bedding plants – tomatoes and peppers. Now this week we’ve potted for sale in October. We’ve also potted poinsettias. Yes, I am a hands-on laborer and am having way too much fun to retire. We have seven grandchildren who I get to watch play just about every day. Three of the boys play baseball, and six of them swim on swim teams for six weeks. All in all the golden years are way too much fun to get into trouble!

Three Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph who are Academy alumnae or former faculty are celebrating jubilees of religious profession this year: • Sister Miriam Medley is celebrating 70 years of religious life. A native of Loretto, she served as principal of Mount Saint Joseph Academy (1960-66), was the librarian at Brescia College (now University) from 1987-94, and taught at Cathedral School, Owensboro (1982-86). Sister Miriam was also a teacher and principal throughout Kentucky and in Missouri, and she served as a parish minister in Kentucky and New Mexico. She is active in prayer ministry at the Motherhouse.

• Sister Helen Ann Stuart A‘42 is celebrating 60 years of religious life. Born in Saint Raphael in Daviess County, she was an educator for 34 years. She taught at Precious Blood School, Owensboro, 1961-62, and St. Alphonsus School, Saint Joseph, 1966-76. She served in the Brescia College curriculum library in 1983. Sister Helen Ann also taught in other schools across Kentucky. From 1985-2002, she ministered as the switchboard operator for the Ursuline Motherhouse. She is retired and active in prayer ministry.

• Sister Cecelia Joseph Olinger A‘58 is celebrating 50 years of religious life. A native of Glennonville, Mo., Sister C.J. taught at Precious Blood School, Owensboro (1961-63), and Immaculate Conception School, Hawesville (1965-66). She also taught in the Louisville Archdiocese, Missouri, and New Mexico and served as parish life coordinator for the Tewa Missions in Espanola, N.M. She is now in outreach ministry in Benton, Ky.

Please include the following alumnae, faculty and family in your prayers • Sister Theresa Marie Wilkerson, OSU, 89, died July 27 in her 69th year of religious life. A native of Owensboro, Ky., Sister Theresa Marie was an outgoing and caring person who loved to share her gift of singing. An educator for 37 years, she taught at Mount Saint Joseph Academy (1973-80), in the Diocese of Owensboro, the Archdiocese of Louisville, and in Nebraska and Missouri. She served as Director of Refugees for the Diocese of Owensboro (1980-94) and as parish minister at St. Stephen Cathedral (1987-97). A hospital chaplain (1994-96), she served as a Eucharistic minister at Owensboro Medical Health System even after her retirement in 1994. Survivors include two brothers, Robert Louis, and John Owen Wilkerson, both of Owensboro.

Sister Theresa • Sister Mary Clement Greenwell, OSU, A’27, died at age 101 on Sept. 23 in her 82nd year of religious life. A native of Curdsville, she was the daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth Sauer Byrne Greenwell. An educator for over 50 years, she taught at St. Joseph High School, Owensboro (192930), St. Anthony School, Peonia (1956-58), Blessed Mother (1973-74), and Immaculate (1974-76) schools, Owensboro. She also taught in the Archdiocese of Louisville, in Missouri and New Mexico, and spent 11 years in Louisville in outreach and tutoring ministry. As a teacher, she believed even the most unlikely learner could become a good student. She retired to the Motherhouse in 1989, where she loved to play cards. Survivors include nieces and nephews, and the members of her religious community.

Sister Mary Clement • Sister Mary deChantal Whelan, OSU, A’ 33, died Sept. 3 at age 94 in her 75th year of religious life. She was a native of St. Joseph, Ky. An educator for over 61 years, she was professor of English at Brescia College (now University) for 39 years (1958-97). “Sister DC” was known for inspiring her students with her love of books, music, and learning, and she began many programs at the college, including the Grants Office, Office of Student Support Services, and Weekend College. She blended her gift of hospitality with a fiery sense of justice, and always radiated joy in her vocation. She also taught in the Diocese of Owensboro, Archdiocese of Louisville, and in Missouri. Survivors include a brother, James Louis Whelan of Newburgh, Ind. • Mary Lillian Calhoun A’38, died March 15 at age 104 in Owensboro. She retired in 1970 as a registered nurse from Daviess County Hospital and regularly volunteered at the Elizabeth Munday Senior Center and St. Stephen Cathedral. Lillian was in the first group of Mount Saint Joseph alumnae to receive the Maple Leaf Award in 2000, an award recognizing outstanding achievement.

She is survived by her brother, Bill Calhoun, and numerous nieces and nephews.

• Jean McAfee Biedermann A’41 died April 17. The mother of six children, she was an accomplished seamstress, artist and cook, but she will be remembered as a woman who approached life with humor and dignity. Her daughter, Joan, tells us, “Mom certainly lived her life to the fullest: spreading laughter and cookies, sharing lessons and recipes, creating beautiful children and beautiful art—and best of all, she did it her way!” Jean’s husband, August F. Biedermann, preceded her in death in 2003. She is survived by her children: Frances, Richard, Robert, Jerry, Mary K, and Joan.

• Mary Celestine Horsman Pendleton A’41 died Dec. 15, 2008 at Jewish Hospital, Louisville. She was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Church and is survived by her daughter, Trudy Moore, two grandchildren, two sisters, and a brother. Her husband, Dennis, preceded her in death.

• Mary Rose Shoemaker A’41, 87, died May 20 in Owensboro. A teacher and medical librarian, Mary Rose graduated from Brescia College in 1954 and St. Louis University in 1964. She was an associate of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph and a frequent volunteer at the Brescia Phonathon and the Mount Saint Joseph Picnic. She donated her body to St. Louis University Medical School, where she was a volunteer.

• Sister Theresa Murphy, SCN A’46, died June 12. She grew up just a mile from the Mount and was taught by Ursuline Sisters at St. Alphonsus School and Mount Saint Joseph Academy and Junior College. She entered the Sisters of Charity at Nazareth, Ky., in 1947 and ministered as teacher and principal for 62 years in Kentucky, Ohio, and Maryland.

• Gertrude Kurz C’50, died June 3 in Owensboro. She was retired from Daviess County Hospital as a medical laboratory technologist, and a member of St. Stephen Cathedral Parish. Her many involvements include the parish altar society, and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
