Extending the Mission of Mount Saint Joseph Academy and College into the 21st Century
Spring 2007
Hope you can join us at the reunion! Dear Mount Saint Joseph Friends, Last year’s Alumnae Reunion was so much fun! It was great, seeing so many of my classmates from 1966, as well as so many of you from years before and after, and laughing about so many funny memories. If you missed last year, I hope you can join us this year in May for a wonderful reunion.
And those who were here last year, please come back. Overall this was a good year for me, and I hope it has been for you. As the Alumnae Association moves into its second century, plans begun at our 100th anniversary in 2005 are taking shape. Our first annual Memorial Mass in October was a joyful occasion and

a good way to remember deceased friends, faculty and families. The e-mail prayer network is growing. The requests I receive from the Alumnae Office tell me that many of you have had painful experiences. I hope you’ve found peace, healing, and comfort in knowing that you’re remembered in our prayers. This issue of The New Mount is filled with news of a great reunion coming in May. Be sure to mark your calendars, and get in touch with your classmates. Complete and mail the registration form as soon as possible. And remember, two Maple Leaf Awards will be presented at the reunion banquet. All alumnae are eligible, but you must nominate them. I’m sure we all know a person who is living a life reflecting in a positive way the spirit of Mount Saint Joseph Academy and Junior College. You’ll find the nomination form inside. On page 6 is a list of over 300 alumnae who are “lost.” Do you see a familiar name? Can you help us to reach out to all of our classmates? If you know a current address, send it to Marian or Sister Marietta in the Alumnae Office. You can be proud of the wonderful committee working on your reunion. Thanks to Liz Ruckriegel Berger A’55 and Gertie Hall Mayhew A’49, as well as the other Alumnae Association officers who work with me, Mary Ford Vuncannon A’55 and Nancy Mills Jones A’72, and their committees. I can’t wait to see you all in May. Can’t wait for spring, either! Blessings to everyone,

Spring 2007
Alumnae Adventures SISTER ELAINE BURKE A’49 says she finally decided to retire from Mount Saint Joseph Retreat Center as of January 6 after 16 years as assistant director. “When you realize your plate is too full, you want to slow down a bit. Most people don’t see me doing that. I will continue working as coordinator of the spiritual component of the Brescia Ministry Formation Program. I’m also spiritual advisor of the Cursillo, secretary for the Council of Religious, chair of the Spirituality Commission of the Ursuline Sisters, and a volunteer at the RiverPark Center in Owensboro. I also enjoy singing in the Spanish choir at Sts. Joseph and Paul on Sundays. If you have other ideas of how I can use my time, email me at eburke@ maplemount.org. Pictured at right at my retirement reception on December 9 are Sister Annalita Lancaster C’43, Sister Rose Marita O’Bryan A’60, and me.” SISTER RUTH (JANET) GEHRES, OSU, A’51 will begin a new ministry at Casa Ursulina in Chillán, Chile, in September. Approximately 200 women of Chillán benefit from this ministry, founded in 1997 by Sister Mary Elizabeth (Mimi) Ballard A’66 and seven Chilean coworkers. Offering a diverse schedule of classes, Casa Ursulina helps women move toward economic, psychological, spiritual and physical well-being. Sister Ruth will work with Sister Mimi and the women in expanding this ministry. This photo shows the Falls of Chillán during Sister Ruth’s March 2006 visit with Sister Mimi (right). A full story about Casa Ursulina appeared in Ursulines Alive magazine available at www.ursulinesmsj.org, or you may request a hard copy. SISTER MARY AGNES (PATSY) VONDERHAAR A’52 wrote, “Class of 1952: Remember our 5-year reunion agreement — 2007 is our 55th anniversary of graduation. Pack your bags and head for MSJ!! Bring lots of pictures and some treasured memories — I can still hear echoes of giggles from ’02." GERTRUDE HANCOCK-BRUMLEVE A’54 (right) says she married Ben Brumleve in November 2004. “I am working part time as a metaphysical counselor and spend my mornings writing. I have five children and 13 grandchildren; Ben has four children and four grandchildren, so our combined family offers much stimulation and joy. We also enjoy traveling abroad — amongst many common interests. Love to all my classmates of ’54 and thank you for the memories!” VIVIAN MARIE BOWLES, OSU A’57 wrote, “You’ve got to be kidding. It can’t be 50 years since we graduated from MSJ. We are all too young. Here’s hoping that all of us young 1957 alumnae will be at the May reunion to share our many stories of these last 50 years. It’s always a joy to be in a group of ‘Mount girls,’ so please join us.” JUDITH NELL RINEY, OSU A’65 (right) and DOTTY “CHRIS” DENNISTON A’65 (left) recently vacationed together in San Francisco. Their tours included a trip to Alcatraz Island, the Golden Gate Bridge and Muir Woods. Sister Judy, Dotty and Sister Miriam Medley (MSJ principal in the mid-60s) have enjoyed a number of vacations together over the last few years, but due to unexpected illness, Sister Miriam could not take the San Francisco trip. To help her share their experience, Judy and Dotty sent daily e-mails and pictures! Judy and Dotty enjoyed their trip and tried to behave (huh, not telling all...Sister Miriam can still give demerits!). ROSEMARY JONES WALLACE A’65 e-mailed to say, “I was just reading The New Mount on the Internet, and it stated that I am lost. OK, here I am! We have lived in beautiful South Carolina for 20 years. We are located only 10 miles from North Myrtle Beach. Our son still lives in Owensboro and works for the city. Thank you and God bless.” BETTY REARDON GREAVES A’66 wrote, “I don’t know about all of you. but each year seems to go by faster than the last. In July my 25-year-old daughter Emily moved into an assisted living home. She’s my neighbor now instead of my roommate. July was a painful month, but we’re both adapting and enjoy our visits twice a week. She seems so much more independent now. I was never good at letting go. I hope to see all of you at Alumnae Reunion in May!” MARTY BICKETT FROST A’67 says, “I am currently completing my 30th year of teaching, the last 27 of which have been at the State University of New York’s Plattsburgh campus, where I serve as chair of the Human Development and Family Relations department. My husband, Richard, and I live on a 30-acre property six miles from the campus and the local hospital (he’s a physician) with Ripken, our faithful nine-year-old Labrador retriever. We enjoy camping, hiking, skiing, and mountain climbing (our home is in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains). In my spare time I also enjoy tending to my flower and vegetable gardens, and playing the occasional game of golf. Since this May will be the 40th anniversary of my graduation from The Mount, I hope to return for Alumnae Weekend." KATHLEEN WELZ McNEARY A’67 has been married for 39 years and has three children and five grandchildren. “My husband Tim and I live in Sarasota, Florida. We have lived here 34 years. I really enjoyed my Mount days and still keep in touch with a few classmates. God’s blessings to you. I hope my prayers help the prayer requests.” Winnie Riney Cohron A’69 wrote, “In summer 2006, I participated with other educators in a Hayes-Fulbright study in three cities in different regions of China. Purpose: to enhance Do you have news to share? understanding of the Chinese educational system, and to build understanding E-mail alumnae@maplemount.org Continued on page 5

of and respect for Chinese culture among Americans. We spent 28 days visiting elementary and secondary schools, public and private universities, and education officials in Beijing, Xian, and Cheng’du. Everywhere we found teachers and parents with high expectations for student performance, a curriculum narrower but much deeper than ours, and strong requirements for instructional accountability. We were amazed by students’ drive to learn and to achieve. We also had time to relax, visiting many tourist and cultural sites, including the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall, and the Terra Cotta Warriors excavation site. We were even allowed to pet a panda! This experience was humbling — we (I) in the United States take for granted such a high quality of life! We also understood better that history is cyclical. The United States possesses great economic wealth in comparison with other countries with a much longer history. Neither the United States nor China was always as we are now. Nor shall we always be. While we were in China, CNN announced that China is now the fourth largest economy in the world. After seeing multinational corporation buildings in Beijing and in the rural countryside of Cheng’du, I didn’t find that surprising.”
