Spring 2008

Keeping in Touch Greetings from Mount Saint Joseph! It’s my pleasure to invite each of you to “come on back home!” Although we are now in the grip of wintry weather, soon the green hills of Maple Mount will be alive with sunshine and promise. Your campus will be all a-bloom when you and your classmates return once more to your beginnings. The year 2008 marks 25 years of significant changes in the history of Mount Saint Joseph – the closing of Mount Saint Joseph Academy, the opening of the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center and the beginning of the Ursuline Associate program. These intertwined events give life to the continuing mission of education and spiritual formation begun so long ago by Saint Angela Merici. This is a year of opportunities for all of you. In addition to the joy of greeting classmates and friends, you will celebrate anniversaries, present Maple Leaf Awards, elect officers and approve a revised constitution and bylaws. You will visit with sisters and faculty, learn about Maple Mount and Saint Angela, and make new memories. I urge you to mark your calendars right now for Alumnae Weekend on May 17 and 18 and contact your classmates. Nominate a deserving classmate to be an officer or a Maple Leaf Award winner and be sure to send your registration by April 15. We look forward to welcoming all of you! Mrs. Marian Bennett, Director of Ursuline Partnerships

Paula Gray of Robards A’73, displays the quilt she won in the December 2007 Quilt Club drawing at Maple Mount. The “picket fence” quilt was quilted by Sister Eva Boone and pieced by Joan Abell. Alumnae Adventures What are you doing these days? Take a moment to share your “adventures.” How do you spend your days? Do you see other classmates? Do you have a new job? Have you retired? Is a new grandchild in the picture? Tell us about your involvement in your church or your community. Send your news to alumnae@maplemount.org or call 270-229-2006 or write to us at Alumnae Office, 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356. Doris Willett Trapp A’48 I live in Mount Carmel, Ill. My husband, Bill, and I are experiencing multiple health problems. Please pray for us as we rely on prayer daily. Sister Elaine Burke A’49 I worked at the Mount Saint Joseph Retreat Center for 16 years but retired from that ministry and joined the staff of Brescia University. I am coordinator of the spiritual component of the Ministry Formation Program at Brescia. I wear a few more hats such as spiritual advisor of the Cursillo Movement, secretary of the Council of Religious, and chairperson of the Spirituality Commission for the Ursulines. I’m proud to say that my sister, Juanita Burke, is an Academy graduate ‘50. My hobbies are singing, reading, exercising, and watching tennis. I have a favorite scripture passage which leads me down the right path and it is, “Be still and know that I am God.” Ann Jenkins Caspar A’62 Thanks for the opportunity to share! Next month I will be married 38 years to Bob Caspar who is a deacon at Saint Martin’s Church in Flaherty. I supposedly retired as an elementary principal in 2002, but the district keeps calling me back for part of every year. I work three to four days a week at Woodland Elementary in Hardin County as an elementary counselor. This is the same school I opened 10 years ago. Our four children and their spouses are very blessed with good jobs and happy children. We have seven grandchildren with another on the way in July. Thank you, God! My Mom will be 85 next month and my dad will be 90 in September. They celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary May 4. I trade e-mails with Sister Rose Jean and Sister Michele. I look Bob and Ann Caspar at the Mount forward to hearing from you. Saint Joseph Picnic in 2005

Mary Patricia Donahue Wathen A’62 I never get to alum events because it has always coincided with graduation at the school where I teach and attendance of faculty is required. Maybe someday soon. Thank you for all efforts to keep us in touch. I so miss the Mount in autumn – it was always so wonderfully ablaze! Patricia Araya Westover A’74 I was a student in 1974 in St. Joseph. I live in Costa Rica and would like to update my information in case some of my classmates want to contact me: Costa Rica, Alajuela, 506-365-7721 or 506-442-3978, e-mail: westovercr@gmail.com Victoria Saltsman A’76 Hello to old yet pleasant memories! Someone here at work “googled me” and let me know I am considered a lost alumnae. I’ve been in Florida for over 23 years and seldom return to the north country. Greetings to all my old school chums! God bless! Beth Ann Parsley A’81 Another alum told me you have me listed as missing. Consider me found! I really don’t have any exciting news or info to add. I live a pretty quiet and peaceful life with my cat and dog. I would like to say hello to all my former classmates, though, and for those who remember her, my grandmother is still with us and is very well. My address is as follows: 334 Hadleys Bend Blvd, Old Hickory, TN 37138. Thank you! Dawn Gifford Byrne A’83

Since graduating I have been busy. I received my bachelor of science degree from Murray State University in 1987 and with a full scholarship attended Ohio University in Athens to pursue my master’s degree in communication disorders. I did NOT complete the program but rather decided to take a different life path. I moved to Cincinnati to marry Darin Byrne from Louisville. I worked in banking and insurance, gave birth to two boys, and then in 2002 our family moved to Orlando, Fla., where Darin was promoted within his company. We relocated to Minneapolis, Minn., in 2005 when my husband took a position with Wolters Kluwer/Banker’s Systems. I am a stay-at-home mom of Connor, 13, and Nolan, 11. I stay busy with volunteer work at my boys’ schools and spend my days managing the house and caring for my family. I try to stay in touch with a few people from my high school days. I hear from Yvette Whitmer-Taylor, Cindy Kaelin-Light, Mary Lee Hermann-Cays, Mary Danhauer, and Jayne Grace-McIntire. There is one person who was very special to me during my “Mount” days – Michele Lucas. She and I had a special bond of friendship. The last I heard from her was soon after graduation – I knew she married and became Michele Lucas-Abrams and she was living in the Bahamas. I do not know if she ever came back to the states, but I would really like to locate her. Her father lived in Kankakee, Ill. Can anyone help with this search? Also, does anyone know how to get in touch with Joanna Thomas? She was also a dear friend. Thanks and God Bless! Diane Sagitto Luszak A’83 I just wanted to let you all know that I regularly receive your wonderful newsletter, and I am not ‘lost.’ I have been married for 17 years and have been blessed with three awesome children. I live in St. Louis, Mo., and would love to hear from other graduates from the class of 1983, the last graduating class! Please keep me on your ‘found’ list!! Thank you so much!!
