Congratulations to the following Academy alumnae celebrating jubilees of religious profession in 2011! 70 Years: Sister Pauletta McCarty ’39 (pictured at left) 50 Years: Sister Helena Fischer ’60 Sister Julia Head ’60 Sister Nancy Murphy ’59 Sister Rose Marita O’Bryan ’60 Sister Kathleen Kaelin ’60 (right), who also taught at the Academy (1973-79) Gertrude Hancock Brumleve ’54: Greetings to everyone! It has been a wonderful year. I have a new grandson, Henry, who is number 15. My oldest is 25, so we cover all stages—what a stimulus to maintain flexibility! One of our highlights this year was an inland water cruise in Alaska. We were on a small vessel with 29 passengers. For seven days, we were in the wilderness, hiked in rainforests, and the viewing of wildlife was awesome. The whole experience was uniquely physical and spiritual, one that will be a lasting memory. Hopefully, I will be there in May. Brenda Greenwell Deibel ’59: I am very grateful for the Mount. I have seven beautiful healthy grandchildren and I still work at the greenhouse when needed. Life is wonderful and the golden years are very busy! Marie Ballard Blumeier ’64: I will always remember my wonderful years at the Mount. They have really formed me into the person I am today. Betty Onley Pontarolo ’66: Thank you for the kind thoughts and the Mount cookbook when Mary OnleyLinder died. It was a nice gesture and I sent my own cookbook that I had ordered before her death to Patsy, our other sister. Now we each have one and she was appreciative also. It has been a hard journey to accept our sister’s death but we have faith in her better life, hope for her family and loving memories of her! A good 2011! Mary Danhauer ’71 is a recent recipient of the Medical Service Award from Health Kentucky Inc. An advanced registered nurse practitioner, Mary leads the staff at Owensboro’s McAuley Clinic, which serves low-income people of any age regardless of ability to pay. Previously she spent three years in Jamaica as a medical clinic volunteer, serving impoverished Jamaican families at the Holy Spirit and St. Croix Clinics. Susan Cagle Gentry ’71: There is no way to put 40 years in a paragraph so here are the highlights. I have been married to a wonderful man for 31 years now. Our three children and one grandson are healthy and happy at this time. I was a medical transcriptionist for 30 years. I have so much to be grateful for, and at the very top of the list is the education I received at MSJ. I treasure the memories from those years. MSJ and the Class of ’71 will always have a special place in my heart. Joan Ruesewald Nelson ’85: I loved my time at the Mount! I hold the Ursuline Sisters close in my heart and pray for them daily.
Alumnae gift to Casa Ursulina helping with education
T
he Academy may be closed, but the Alumnae Association is still finding ways to aid those seeking to further their education. Following the earthquake in Chile in early 2010, the alumnae who gathered for the reunion in May issued a challenge to support the efforts of Sister Mimi Ballard A’66, and Sister Ruth Gehres A’51, to minister to the people of Chillán who were affected by the disaster. That weekend, $1,465 was raised. “Because (the alumnae) decided not to specify a particular use for the donations, Mimi and I began to talk about using these funds for something that would reflect in a special way the mission of Mount Saint Joseph Academy,” Sister Ruth wrote in a letter to the alums. Those donations are forming the nucleus of the Mount Saint Joseph Alumnae Fund for Education at Casa Ursulina. “After all, it was our education at the Mount that had given us such great opportunities ... opportunities that have opened so many doors for us and (in so many cases) our families,” Sister Ruth wrote. The idea for the education fund came after the sisters learned of Juan Campos, a young man from Chillán whose family lives in the parish of Sister Magaly, a Chilean sister who is campus minister in a Catholic school in Chillán.
Juan graduated from high school in 2009 with grades and exam scores so high that he received a full scholarship to the school of medicine at the Catholic University of the Immaculate Conception in the city of Concepción, about an hour and a half west of Chillán. Although his tuition is paid, he has costs such as room and board, books, Juan Eduardo Campos and transportation home High School Graduation to Chillán from time to time. Juan’s family is very poor. His father works as a street sweeper and garbage collector in the outdoor market in Chillán. His mother is a temporary seasonal worker picking berries for a large agricultural export company. Since he was a little boy, his mother says, Juan has been determined to work hard in school and to someday become a doctor. His parents are so proud of him now that he is on his way. But finances are a big challenge, Continued on page 6

.. . p U ing h with Sister Lennora c t a C “I was there in the heyday,” said Sister Lennora Carrico, who was the lone freshman homeroom teacher at Mount Saint Joseph Academy from 1951-57. In those boom years for the Academy, she often had 40 students. “They were good years. We had good students,” she said. “I said the Lord sent me here, he’ll help me. That’s how I got through it.” One of her favorite memories is the time she chaperoned some students as they visited the University of Notre Dame. Other than her teaching duties, Sister Lennora was responsible for nurturing the girls, many of whom were away from home for the first time. “I sat on the steps and listened to a lot of stories,” she said. Sister Lennora was a teacher or principal for 31 years. She spent three years in the Education Department at Brescia College, and spent from 1974 until her retirement in 2003 ministering in outreach, personal and pastoral care, and as the daily annalist for the community. This is her 73rd year as an Ursuline Sister, and she remains active in the Powerhouse of Prayer. Those who want to write to Sister Lennora can do so at 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356. (“Catching Up” is a new feature that will be included in each issue of The New Mount, updating alumnae on one of the sisters who ministered at the Academy.)
Frances Goetz Gaddis A’65 enjoys her job at the Mount There’s no picture of Frances Goetz Gaddis next to the definition of “progress” in the dictionary, but perhaps there should be. Frances has lived most of her life in western Daviess County, a life that has continuously intersected with the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph. She graduated from Mount Saint Joseph Academy in 1965, worked as a school secretary where an Ursuline taught, worked at Brescia University and got a degree from there, and met with Ursuline Sisters when her husband decided to join the Catholic Church. Now she is a registered nurse working the night shift to take care of retired sisters in Saint Joseph Villa. “I’ve always wanted to progress,” she said. After five years as a unit clerk for Owensboro Medical Health System, answering phones, ordering supplies, and transcribing physician orders, she decided to pursue nursing. “I liked what the nurses did. They seemed so smart and able to take care of people.” She became an LPN in March 2008, and continued working toward her RN certification, and received it in December. “I’m almost 64, being an RN is probably the last step,” she said. “They say you should bloom where you’re planted. I’ve never been planted long enough to bloom.” On the night shift, she gets medicines set up for the next morning, does some treatments at 4 or 5 a.m., and is available if a sister has trouble during the night. “She’s very compassionate with the sisters, she really gets close to them,” said Bonnie Howard, nursing coordinator. Among the sisters Frances cares for in the Villa are Sister Marita Greenwell, her music teacher in high school, and Sister Miriam Medley, who was her principal. Frances said she loves working at the Mount. “It’s a totally different atmosphere. It’s peaceful,” she said. “The sisters are so kind, you never come out of a room without hearing ‘God bless you.’ You’re so appreciated here,” she said. “I’m here to take care of the sisters. When they tell you that you’re very kind, you know they noticed.” n

MUSIC at the Academy— A Little Bit of Heaven
By Sister Amelia Stenger A’67, Director of Development for the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph When I was in the fifth grade, we got our first television set. It only got one channel. On Saturday morning we could watch cartoons for about an hour before we did our chores. I remember watching Mickey Mouse on the Merrie Melodies cartoons. He was swimming against the rushing waves and trying to save Minnie from her sinking boat. The wonderful music told the story without very many words. I loved the music. My freshman year at the Academy was also a wonderful learning experience. There were no cartoons on Saturday mornings but I got to listen to some of the same music that I had heard on those cartoons. Who knew that those wonderful scenes of Mickey and Minnie were really set to the music of Rossini’s “William Tell Overture”? When I hear them today, I can see the pictures of the cartoon in my mind. The Academy offered me tremendous opportunities to enjoy and learn music. During my senior year, my work assignment was cleaning the music department. One of the privileges was to listen to records while I cleaned. Of course one of my favorites was the “William Tell Overture.” Sister Marita Greenwell and Sister Francesca Hazel took me under their wings during my four years at the Academy and shared their gifts with me. Their music classes and music lessons opened up worlds of adventure into music, languages, Sister Francesca opera, classical composers, and the opportunity to sing some of the classics. They encouraged me and became mentors I cherished then and today. They were great role models and friends. Today, when I have the opportunity to cantor at a Sunday Liturgy here at the Mount, I always know that when I come into the dining room, Sister Marita will be there to give me a smile and a nod to tell me things went fine. There were some wonderful teachers at the Mount who loved us and cared for us during our time there. Some of the days may not Sister Marita have been easy and some of us may have been a bit trying, but the sisters loved us just the same. Let us thank them and pray for and with them as they continue to serve us here on earth or intercede for us in heaven.n

In Loving Memory May these alumnae and faculty members rest in God’s peace: Sister Blanche Rita Bickett, 98, A’30, died Jan. 10 at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 80th year of religious life. She was the oldest living alumnae of the Academy among the sisters. A native of Uniontown, Ky., she ministered in the Archdiocese of Louisville, as well as in Nebraska and New Mexico, from 1933-52. From 1952-89, she ministered at the Ursuline Sisters Motherhouse, first as kitchen coordinator, then laundry coordinator for 45 years. During those years she acted as a mother figure for several young girls who needed a motherly presence. She was known for her sense of humor and being forever cheerful. Her sister, Sister Agnes Irene Bickett A’34, died in 2009. Sister Ann Victoria Wasylina, 86, died Oct. 12, 2010, at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 56th year of religious life. She was born Irena Wasylina in Duliby Stryj in the Ukraine, then a part of Poland. Memories of Sister Blanche Rita... Who knew when Mom, (my twin sister) Elaine and I went to work in the laundry at the Mount, that we would start a 50+ year blessing. Sister Blanche Rita won our hearts. She became our second Mom. Our Mother, Georgia McCarty, said that if she didn’t love Sister so much, she would be jealous. We made so many memories. Sister helped Elaine make pear preserves. They turned the jar upside down, with a knife in it, and it wouldn’t fall out. But, it was so good! Also, on my wedding day we saw the sleeve was not stitched on my dress. Sister’s beautiful stitching saved the day. She was such a great seamstress. Another time, I went to use an ATM machine. When the money came out, Sister wanted to know, “WHO’S IN THERE?” I said no one. “SOMEONE HAS TO BE IN THERE!” she said. What a hoot! We also loved getting together with the Bickett family. They made us feel so welcome at their big Bickett reunion and when the sisters celebrated their 50th and 75th anniversies. Their sister Lib had us down often with the sisters. The Bickett family means so much to us. Thank God for giving us Sister Blanche Rita and so many wonderful memories. E-mail your memories so that we can print them in our newsletter or post them online! info.msj@maplemount.org
