From our Congregational Leader Dear Friends, One of my favorite post-Hurricane Katrina stories involved a big “pay it forward” with “payback.” In response to a cry for help from one of our sisters in Shreveport, La., Ursulines and their friends from all over the United States responded with an outpouring of aid to the Shreveport Catholic schools, deluged with refugees from the New Orleans hurricane. Like the Bible story of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, there were leftovers – $10,000 to be exact. The principal of the Shreveport Catholic high school Sister Michele contacted all Ursuline community leaders and told us what he proposed to do with the extra money: he wanted to give it to the historic Ursuline Academy in New Orleans, which had been badly damaged by the storm. He said he thought it especially appropriate that a graduate of the Jesuit high school in New Orleans should do that, because when the Jesuits arrived in New Orleans they “came without their checkbook” and had to borrow money from the Ursulines, already established there since 1727. They borrowed the (then) princely sum of $10,000 and never paid it back. Now a product of Jesuit education was finally repaying that old debt to the Ursulines of New Orleans! When we look at the history of the Ursulines in Illinois and Kansas, we can only imagine how many “pay it forward” stories there are, and how the ripples of those good works continue to go on and on through the lives of those touched by the Ursuline presence. We know that the effects of the Contemporary Woman Program at Brescia continue to be felt in the lives of the women and men who participated in those courses…because we hear it from them. And our donors honored in this issue who are casting their bread upon the waters in supporting our ministries and our retired sisters—what will be the payback for them? I can’t answer that one, but I know it will be good! You certainly are in our prayers. God bless all of you as you “pay it forward” with your time, talent and treasure; may your “payback” be abundant, and may you not have to wait for it quite as long as the New Orleans Ursulines did!

Maple Mount Sisters help maintain Ursuline presence in Belleville and Paola By Dan Heckel, Mount Saint Joseph Staff
B
y the time the 10 Ursuline Sisters of Belleville, Ill., signed the Book of the Company on Nov. 25, 2005 to become Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, there were already two sisters from Maple Mount ministering in Belleville. Those two, Sisters Nancy Murphy and Nancy Liddy, are still serving the people of Belleville. Along with Sisters Dorothy Helbling, Mary Ellen Backes, and Marilyn Mueth, they make up the Illinois contingent of Ursuline Sisters, and they believe the Ursuline presence is essential to maintain in western Illinois. “It’s important to keep a presence here,” said Sister Dorothy, who served two stints as superior in Belleville for a total of 24 years. “If I go to a funeral, I say, ‘I’m representing the Ursulines.’ That’s why I’m adamant about staying,” she said. “We’ve been friends with these people since 1945,” the year the motherhouse “The leadership of the Ursulines of Mount thought it would be Calvary moved from Kenmare, wonderful if some N.D., to Belleville. Helping sisters wanted to maintain Ursuline ministries in Belleville, and now Paola, move to Illinois to minister, to show that Kan., where a Maple Mount sister recently moved, was we are indeed one a hope of the Mount Saint community.” Joseph leadership team. “The leadership thought it would be wonderful if some sisters wanted to move to Illinois to minister, to show that we are indeed one community and that we valued the ministry of the sisters there,” said Sister Michele Morek, congregational leader. Sister Mary Ellen, a former Belleville superior who ministers about two hours north at St. Joseph Parish in Springfield, said maintaining an Ursuline presence shows people the vitality of the sisters. “They see that Ursulines are very much alive,” she said. “It’s the unique presence of Saint Angela, the charism and hospitality.” The merger occurred because the Belleville community was getting so small. Since the merger, two of the 10 remaining sisters have died, Sisters Eileen Mullen and Emily Zent. “We’re Sister Mary Ellen Backes, center, poses with Ursuline Associate Karen Siciliano and Larry Devocelle at the church where she ministers: St. Joseph Parish in Springfield, Ill.

still facing the same issues, but there are more sisters to share it,” Sister Mary Ellen said. “I’m really glad to be a part of Maple Mount.” Sister Nancy Murphy was associate community life coordinator at the Mount and director of novices when she was asked to go to Belleville to become the local coordinator. Her first role was to get the property – four buildings in a wooded area in downtown Belleville – cleaned out and ready for sale. Sister Nancy Liddy had been ministering to her father, and was looking for a job when she was selected to be a pastoral associate at St. George Parish in New Baden, Ill., not far from Belleville. In 2008 Sister Dorothy she became the Helbling at director of liturgy a merger and adult formation ceremony that at St. Teresa Parish in took place when Ursuline Sisters Belleville. of Mount Saint “Sister Nancy Joseph visited Liddy was a good Belleville in 2005. person to have there in the transition because she loved the sisters and brought energy and life to the local community there,” Sister Michele said. “We asked Sister Nancy Murphy if she would take over as ‘local coordinator’ and ‘property manager’ until we sold the property, because of her experience in administration, especially as (associate) local community life coordinator at the motherhouse,” Sister Michele said. “She is extremely competent, has great organizational skills, and is a kind, patient person. And she’s certainly had Continued on page 4

a chance to learn a lot more since she’s been there -- about running auctions, renting houses, and fixing roofs and leaky basements!” Selling the property has proved troublesome, and the two Sister Nancys continue to live on the property while they await a buyer. It’s afforded them a chance to get to know the people of Belleville. “This is a very Catholic area,” Sister Nancy Murphy said. “I’ve found these people are so appreciative and respectful of sisters. I go to the Cathedral for Mass, and find the people very open. They knew Belleville Ursulines, they don’t really understand the merger.” Sister Marilyn Mueth grew “This is a very Catholic up on a farm near Belleville area. I’ve found and now teaches second grade these people are so – among numerous other jobs – at St. James Catholic School appreciative and respectful of sisters.” in nearby Millstadt. “I know the people of New Baden really like Sister Nancy Liddy,” Sister Marilyn said. “I truly appreciate Nancy Murphy for what she’s done. She left her own mother to come here. She’s the type of person who sacrifices herself for others.” Sister Marilyn believes even more than the current presence of sisters is needed in the Belleville area. “My principal said, ‘I didn’t know every Catholic school didn’t have a sister.’ Everyone wants that sister in second grade teaching sacraments,” Sister Marilyn said. “I can give practical ideas because I’ve taught everything. Ursulines do a good job of living in the middle of people, like Angela intended us to be.” In 2005, the remaining sisters in the Belleville motherhouse were Sister Dorothy and Sisters Frances and Mary Patrick McDonagh. Sister Dorothy lives in an apartment in Belleville, and still ministers to associates and the Ladies Auxiliary, takes a blind woman to church each week, and offers spiritual direction to those in need. Sisters Frances and Mary Patrick are retired to Maple Mount. “Frances still has people from Mascoutah (Ill., where she taught for 33 years) come to visit her, and people still write to Mary Patrick,” Sister Nancy Murphy said. “When Nancy
and I came, these sisters really embraced us. A presence here is important. It’s a good feeling here among these people.” Sister Frances thinks the two Sister Nancys add a lot to the Belleville community. “You have to find people who are gifted in different areas. Both the Nancys are perfect for what they’re doing now,” Sister Frances said. Although she misses Belleville, Sister Frances is happy to be at Maple Mount. “You make your home wherever you go,” she said. “I’m grateful I’m here.” Sister Nancy Liddy was not available for this article, but she wrote about her first impressions of Belleville in the Fall 2005 issue of Convergence, a publication for the communities represented in the Ursuline Society. “One of the interesting things about living downtown (Belleville) versus the country (Maple Mount) is the number of diverse guests that frequent the motherhouse,” she wrote. “Among the innumerable activities of the Belleville Ursulines are their promotion and support of the Daughters of Isabella, Ladies Auxiliary, and a well-attended Scripture class. “The downtown location of the motherhouse allows for easy transportation for many of the physically and mentally challenged group members,” she wrote. “Their prayer is gutsy and deep, and we plan to attend their meetings as often as possible.” Sister Michele said it will be up to the sisters to determine how long their ministry continues in Illinois. “We would like to keep an Ursuline presence there for as long as possible, in tribute to the wonderful work Ursulines have done there over the years, and in acknowledgement of the love that many people have for Ursulines there,” she said. MSJ PRESENCE IN Paola In October 2008, the Ursuline Sisters of Paola, Kan., merged with Mount Saint Joseph, with 12 of their remaining 23 sisters moving to Maple Mount and the others remaining in ministry in the Paola area. In August 2009, Sister Betsy Moyer became the first Ursuline Sister from Maple Mount to move to Paola to begin a ministry, serving as a licensed practical nurse at Vintage Park, an assisted living facility. “I believe it was my destiny to find a job here in Paola at this time,” Sister Betsy said. She is a native of Nebraska City, Neb., where her mother still lives, and had hoped for a few years to move to the Kansas/Missouri area with the Paola Sisters. “The Ursulines are very accepted, admired, and loved. My coming has given a little spark of hope to many of the people and associates I have met,” Sister Betsy said. “I think, perhaps, I have been the Ursuline bridge from Kentucky to Kansas just as the Ursulines (in Paola) were the bridges crossing over to Kentucky.” She hopes her arrival will give hope to the people that the Ursulines will continue to be a part of the greater Kansas/ Missouri area.
Sister Sister Michele said Sister Betsy’s move is a sign of solidarity Marilyn – “that we are one community, one with them and that Mueth, we value the same things…we certainly value the Ursuline Sister Nancy presence and history in that area, and are proud to be a part of Liddy, and Sister Mary it now. Betsy is a very positive person and a hard worker, and Ellen Backes will bring a lot of ‘spirit’ to wherever she lives.” perform Sister Betsy said she has found the Kansas people and music at associates warm and faith-filled. “They carry the traditions a special merger and hopes of Angela in their everyday lives and to those they Mass in serve,” she said. “They have a strong sense of courage and are Belleville in filled with high hopes.”n 2005.

Still Relevant After 46 Years

hen Sister Rose Marita O’Bryan taught a class on human trafficking as part of the Contemporary Woman Program, one class member said, “I had no idea this goes on right under our noses.” A theology professor at Brescia University used some of her class instruction in his Christian feminism course, and word of it spread campus wide, Sister Rose Marita said. “I was just thrilled,” she said. These are just two small examples of how the Contemporary Woman Program that began 46 years ago is still having an impact on the Owensboro, Ky., community. “We never know where it’s going to take us,” said Molly Greenwell, who along with her husband Carl has been attending Wednesday evening classes with the Partnership Group for 21 years. “It helps expand the way we think.” The Greenwells began with an invitation from Sister Marita Greenwell to join her newest class. “It’s about men and women in partnership. There’s always something spiritual about it,” Molly Greenwell said. “It’s very good, we pick out books that explore topics you wouldn’t talk about daily,” Greenwell said. “Some people think it’s ‘new age-y’ but it’s not,” she said. “It just goes deeper into what you already know and think. It’s for both men and women.” Marianna Robinson has been a member of The Canticle Group for several years, meeting on Friday mornings for lively book discussions from such authors as John O’Donohue, Thomas Merton, or Joan Chittister, or a video series such as Brian Swimme’s “Powers of the Universe.” “With today’s emphasis on continuing education and the importance of keeping our minds alert, it is clear that our ‘Canticle Group’ and all of Sister Rose Marita’s Contemporary

Woman Programs are pointed in the right direction,” Robinson said. “I’ve never left the class empty-handed.” There are eight not-for-credit classes being led by Sister Rose Marita this semester at Brescia as part of the Contemporary Woman Program. Aside from the Partnership and Canticle groups, other courses include Women and the Bible, Women Doctors of the Church, and The Several Storied Merton. A few other courses will depend on the number of people who enroll, but participants can still sign up. “All the programs I do have something to do with … justice and equality,” Sister Rose Marita said. “The status of women still needs to be worked at. We still haven’t broken through the glass ceiling.” The program began when there were few others like it in the country. Although the world has changed, the program is still relevant, and the Ursuline Sisters retain a unique perspective on how to shape contemporary women, Sister Rose Marita said. “Our world is big enough for all kinds of embodiments to be a contemporary woman,” she said. When the Ursuline Sisters were selected in March 2009 for the coveted Athena Award, an honor that recognizes people who assist women in attaining their full potential, one of the reasons cited was the Contemporary Woman Program. Sister Francesca Hazel began the program in 1963 along with Dr. Philip Law, a Chicago physician who noticed that many of his female patients lacked self-esteem that left them with few worthwhile goals in life. Sister Francesca taught the first course on Christian Femininity at Maple Mount to 18 upper division women students at Brescia, and their reaction was so positive it was offered as a two-credit course the following semester. The name of the class was changed from “Christian Femininity” to “Contemporary Woman” so it was clear to be open to all women. Now the courses are open to men also. Sister Marita began working with Sister Francesca in 1971, and became Sister Marita Greenwell, left, and Sister director in 1973, remaining with the Rebecca White previously ministered in the Contemporary Woman Program.
program until her retirement in 2005. “I had some wonderful women I worked with,” Sister Marita said. “They enriched my life more than I enriched theirs. They shared a lot of their problems, their dealings with others. We learned so much from each other.” In 1989, Sister Marita developed a Women’s Studies minor at Brescia, and the following year she received the Woman of Achievement Award presented by the Owensboro Business and Professional Woman’s Club. “Self-esteem has always been relevant,” Sister Marita said. “Some of the women grew so much, some of their husbands wanted to come to the class to see what it was about. We invited them, to ease their fears.” Sister Rebecca White worked in the Contemporary Woman program from 1995-2001, and taught classes under the Women’s Studies minor. “The Contemporary Woman Program had an impact on women like you wouldn’t believe,” Sister Rebecca said. “Sister Marita still has a following.” Some people scoff at the importance of Contemporary Woman from its early days, because it involved such things as teaching women to decorate their homes to coincide with the church year, Sister Rebecca said. But the real intent was developing self-esteem in the women. “There was no women’s self-improvement going on anywhere in the United States at the time,” Sister Rebecca said. “The importance was teaching women to develop a voice for themselves. These women were very active in the church and in the civic community. They credit (Sister) Marita with building them up to speak out on issues that were important To enroll in the Contemporary Woman Program, contact Sister Rose Marita O’Bryan (270) 686-4275 or by e-mail: rosemarita.obryan@brescia.edu

to them.” Sister Rebecca taught mostly traditional students, but she said some of the nontraditional women students were the ones who “got” the class more. “They had experienced not getting paid as much as a man for doing the same work, and the problems of entering the job market later after raising a family,” Sister Rebecca said. “Younger students … didn’t think those issues would touch them.” One of her students in 1997, Susan Martinez, wrote, “Sister Rebecca helped me learn to love and appreciate myself. … She’s helped me to build my confidence, which has given me strength through some very rough times.” Sister Rose Marita took over the Contemporary Woman Program in June 2005, and has offered not-for-credit courses each semester. She’s averaged 95 people a year. “I wanted to start with a segment of not-for-credit programs, because that’s the sheer joy of learning,” she said. n The Mountinspired craft booth featured many handmade items. Sister Rosalin’s fourth career
During her long hours in ministry, Sister Rosalin Thieneman thinks a particular quote may have helped her persevere through some heavy schedules: “That which is not in use ages twice as fast.” Perhaps that’s how Sister Rosalin has kept so active, still reporting for work each afternoon at the Maple Mount Business office to help as needed, and volunteering to answer the phone and greet guests at the information desk. “Sister Rosalin is a joy to Sister Rosalin Thieneman work with as she has such a picks up monetary donations in her work for pleasant disposition; she is the Mount Saint Joseph always smiling and willing business office. to do whatever we ask her to do,” said Sandra Elder, director of finance. “She is dependable and takes pride in her work.” Sister Rosalin, the oldest of nine children, is a native of Shively, near Louisville. She attended St. Denis Parish, where all her teachers were Ursuline Sisters. It wasn’t until age 28 that Sister Rosalin realized the path God meant her to take. She joined the Ursulines in 1949. Sister Rosalin has had four careers as an Ursuline Sister. From 1951-61 she was an elementary school teacher in the Kentucky cities of Vine Grove, Paducah, and Owensboro, and taught typing at Mount Saint Joseph Academy one year while serving as secretary to the principal. Many people in Owensboro know her from her years at Brescia College, where from 1961-69 she was assistant registrar and director of admissions. When the U.S. Office of Education required all federal student aid to be administered from one office, Sister Rosalin was asked to become student aid director. After a year of working on her master’s in counseling and guidance, she became the Brescia dean of admissions from 1970-75, then director of financial aid from 1975-88. In January 1989, she began her third career, and the one that proved most fulfilling, as a parish minister to the elderly at St. Edward Parish in Jeffersontown, Ky. “It reached out to people whom others overlooked,” she said. “They loved having someone to listen to their stories.” When she celebrated her 60th jubilee this year, Sister Rosalin got a card from a woman in her 90s thanking her for the weekly visits. In her spare time she enjoys crossword puzzles, Scrabble, and visiting family in Louisville. You can send letters to Sister Rosalin at 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356. n

Soli Deo Gloria
We rejoice in the gifts of our sisters, given for the kingdom of God Two Ursulines were honored by the Diocese of Owensboro, Ky., for teaching in diocesan schools. Sister Anne Michelle Mudd (top left) was honored for 40 years of service and Sister Mary Timothy Bland was honored for 30 years at the Catholic School Educators Professional Development Day July 24 at St. Mary of the Woods Parish, Whitesville. Sister Anne Michelle has been principal/teacher at St. Paul School in Leitchfield, since 1997. She taught in other Kentucky schools and in Nebraska. Sister Mary Timothy has taught in the Owensboro Catholic Schools since 1986. She also taught in Bowling Green, Radcliff, and in Missouri. Sister Kathleen Condry, former superior of the Ursuline Sisters of Paola, Kan., prior to their 2008 merger with the Ursulines of Mount Saint Joseph, was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by Gov. Steve Beshear. This is an honorary title bestowed by the governor, and includes an invitation to join the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, which raises money to support charities and education. One of Sister Kathleen’s former students asked State Rep. Arnold Simpson to petition Gov. Beshear on her behalf. The former Ursuline Sisters of Paola will be honored on Nov. 22 with the 2009 Duchesne Award by Sacred Heart Church/Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne Shrine of Mound City, Kan. Fr. Reginald Saldanha, pastor at Sacred Heart, wrote that the Ursulines were selected for their “efforts to promote the devotion to Saint Rose Philippine, your contributions in the field of education in our Archdiocese for over 100 years, and your efforts in promoting vocations to priesthood and religious life.” The Most Reverend Archbishop Joseph Naumann will preside over the Mass and present the award at Sacred Heart.
Archivists for Congregations of Women Religious honored Sister Emma Cecilia Busam as one of its founding members during the 6th Triennial Conference Sept. 17-20 at the Clarion Hotel in Milwaukee. Sister Emma Cecilia was one of five members of the Society of American Archivists in 1989 who was asked to help congregations of women religious who did not have archives. They gathered information from religious orders across the U.S., and founded ACWR in 1990. Sister Emma Cecilia and Sister Mary Serbacki, OSF, of New York were the only two founders who could attend. Sister Emma Cecilia was the third president of ACWR (1995-96). She has been an archivist for 26 years, first at Mount Saint Joseph, and now for the Diocese of Owensboro, Ky. The Society of American Archivists honored her in 1994 with the Sister M. Claude Lane Award, for her significant contribution to the field of religious archives. Sister George Mary Hagan spent more than two weeks in Italy in July on a retreat study program, and was able to visit the birthplace of Saint Angela Merici. Her first week in Rome focused on the U.S. Bishops’ document on lay ministry, and featured daily speakers at the Lay Centre at Foyer Unitas. The three leaders of the trip were Louisville priests who concelebrated Mass at the Sanctuary of Saint Angela in Brescia. Sister George Mary also visited Assisi, Milan, Florence, and Venice, where she said the highlight was seeing a gallery on Saint Ursula at the Accademia Galleries. In Brescia, she was most touched by viewing the body of Saint Angela, and seeing the statue of Angela the Pilgrim, looking heavenward with staff in hand, in the central piazza in Desenzano. “It became more real to me, more alive, after hearing it all these years, seeing where she worshipped and ministered,” she said. Sister George Mary is retired and helps sisters at the Motherhouse.
