In this issue Come, Join Me in the Piazza ........ 3 An invitation from Angela Merici Dear Friends, It is with delight and enthusiasm that I provide words for this page of the first edition of the magazine, Ursulines Alive. So much planning has gone into the launching of this new publication that it is no wonder that the very heart of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph quickens, skips a beat, and voices a proud “yes!” This magazine is a medium for sharing our heart with you. What comes to light out of the heart is of vital significance. Only who we are and what we do for God with all our heart has any value. In these pages, we give you glimpses into the living heart of Ursulines, alive and well, and in communion with the people of our time. In our primary document, The Ursuline Way of Life, we proclaim: “As community we are one in mission and ministry: the power of the entire congregation united in the Lord is present in the ministry of each member. The wisdom and prayer of our elderly and infirm sisters are integral to the mission of the congregation. Together we stand with Jesus before the Father, saying: Here I am, Lord. Send me!” Through these magazine pages, we invite you into our mission and ministry. Through these magazine pages, we invite you into our inmost heart, where God’s fire is kept burning, and we are impelled to share what we have received. We are Ursulines Alive!

Come, Join Me in the Piazza An invitation from Angela Merici Interpreted by Sister Rita Klarer, OSU

hen you know something good, you want to shout it from the housetops — to share the good news! Truly, I have good news to share with you, and so I have invited you to join me here in the Piazza. A piazza is an open, welcoming place — a place of graciousness, true hospitality, and above all, joy! We are nothing if we are not men and women of joy, joy so great that it spills over into the lives of all we meet! Perhaps I had better introduce myself. My name is Angela, and I lived in a little town in Italy more than 400 years ago. It seems such a great distance, both in time and in space. Now, in the year 2002, my thoughts turn here, to a place very far from my lovely Desenzano, but an equally lovely spot in western Kentucky, an ocean away in miles, but so very near in spirit. The Spirit that guided me 400 years ago continues to inspire the women who live, work and pray – and play – in this sacred space that we call Mount Saint Joseph. As a young woman, I became acutely aware of a crying need in my hometown, and indeed, throughout Italy. I knew that something needed to be done, and I did it! That is exactly the same spirit which motivated the women who first came here, and which continues to motivate them today. When the Spirit calls, we respond! In my time, women were poorly educated if at all. So they were unable to assume their roles as guides and leaders in their homes and communities. To respond to this need, I gathered a group of 28 young women eager to begin this great adventure of reaching out to girls and young women. By that time, 1535, I had moved to the city of Brescia. I didn’t intend to form a religious order as religious orders were structured in that time. We lived in our own homes, supporting ourselves as we could, coming together for prayer and mutual support. We believed then, as we do now, that a life of contemplation is possible in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, as truly as it is behind convent walls. Not only possible, but essential if we are to respond to the voice of the Spirit within. Little did we know what great things God had in mind for us! A passage in Paul’s letter to the Corinthians mirrors our journey: I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth (l Cor 3:6). In my words: I, Angela, planted, thousands of women continue to water, but only God can give the growth. As I told my daughters, as I came to think of them, our first refuge must be always at the feet of Jesus Christ. It was true then; it is true now.

Saint Angela Merici: detail from a stained glass window in the chapel of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph.

We needed a name for our little band. Remembering the valiant, adventurous spirit of the young virgin martyr, Ursula, we called ourselves “The Company of Saint Ursula.” We knew that we too would follow the call of our Beloved, no matter where. Like Ruth, we felt in our hearts, Wherever you go, I shall go (Ruth 1:16). As our numbers grew, we were called to follow Jesus far beyond our native land, to places throughout the world where He would have His love proclaimed. We spread throughout Europe, notably to France and Germany. We experienced persecution and martyrdom. True to the Gospel, the blood of martyrs became seed for our growth. From France, Ursulines ventured to Quebec in 1639, becoming the first women religious in the New World. In 1727, Ursulines came to New Orleans, the first women religious in what is now the United States.

This spirit of adventure and of eagerness to respond to the Spirit showed itself again in 1858, when Martin John Spalding, Bishop of Louisville, asked Ursulines in Straubing, Bavaria, to come to educate the German immigrants in Louisville. My daughters needed great courage to accept this challenge, for Kentucky was known as the “bloody hunting ground.” But with martyrdom in their heritage, they came boldly, remembering again the words of Ruth: Wherever you go, I shall go.

God’s providence wove the history of Mount Saint Joseph and that of one unique woman tightly Sister Claudia Hayden enjoys talking with Joe Stinnett, one together. Christmas in April A Kentucky parish sends packages of love to Chile

F

or more than 130 children of Chillán, Chile, Christmas came in April this year — thanks to some generous and hardworking friends some 6,000 miles away in Bardstown, Kentucky, USA. The link between Chillán and Bardstown is Ursuline Sister Mary Elizabeth Ballard, a Bardstown native who has been ministering for over 20 years in Latin America, 16 of these in Chillán. The plan was born at Christmas 2000, when Sister Mimi — as she is known by family and friends — came home to be with her mother and her large family in the Bardstown area. Parishioners at St. Joseph Proto Cathedral (now Basilica) already knew a lot about Sister Mimi’s ministry at the Dianna Ortiz Ursuline Center for Women in Chillán, a city of 150,000 in southern Chile. They had already contributed generously to the purchase of a small house which, in 1996, became the “Casa Ursulina.” Located in a barrio with the highest unemployment/subemployment rate in the city, this Center serves unwed mothers, wives of unemployed men, and women raising their children alone. At Casa Ursulina, women learn trades to help support their families and methods of working together in cooperatives. There are also courses in self-esteem, physical and mental health. All teachers are volunteers. In March 1998, Sister Mimi and her fellow ministers began a day program for pregnant teenagers — helping them to prepare for the birth, and then to care for their babies. Learning trades is also part of this program. Volunteers provide childcare while the young mothers are learning or working. Already an important part of this ministry, the people of St. Joseph Parish were eager to do more. Director of Worship Kay Corbett, pastor Father Bill Medley, and Sister Mimi planned an Advent Tree and invited parishioners to give Christmas gifts to the children of Casa Ursulina. Pink and blue angels on the tree — colored by St. Joseph School fourth graders — represented 134 children needing winter clothing (in Chile, winter begins in May) and school supplies. On each angel was printed the age of a child. The purchase of toys was discouraged, since the children’s need for basic items is so great. Kay also hung one hundred yellow “monetary angels” for those who wanted to give without going shopping. The Advent Tree 2001 resulted in 46 boxes and over $4300 in gifts for the children in Chillán. The parishioners’ generosity encouraged generosity in others. “It was the end of the season for winter coats here,” Kay noted. “Sears gave us an excellent price on them.” The parish staff and youth group, together with children in the school, helped pack the boxes. Through a parishioner who works there, UPS shipped the gifts, without charge, to a mission warehouse in Wisconsin, which sent them on to Chillán through Cáritas International. Sister Mimi emphasizes that “it was all really well organized.” The boxes arrived in mid-April, and “we had a big Christmas party,” Sister Mimi writes. The pictures on this page go beyond words in describing the delight of the children and their mothers. (Sister Mimi is at right in the bottom photo.) For the people of St. Joseph Parish, “this is what Advent is all about,” Kay Corbett says. “It did a lot of good for the soul, and it was so much fun!” The project will be repeated this year, this time with angels on the tree for 250 to 300 children. n

Journey From Torture to Truth Sister Dianna Ortiz tells her story of pain, healing, commitment

T

hirteen years after being abducted and tortured in Guatemala, Sister Dianna Ortiz has published an account of her experience. In The Blindfold’s Eyes: My Journey from Torture to Truth, Sister Dianna describes her abduction and torture, her struggle to heal, and her continuing work to tell the world about the others who did not escape. “I have to let the people who were being tortured beside me know that I haven’t forgotten them,” she says. “As long as I’m alive, I have to use my life to work against the practice of torture.” An Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph, Sister Dianna was working as a missionary among indigenous people in Guatemala when, in November 1989, she was held for 24 hours, gang-raped, burned with cigarettes, and suspended over a pit filled with the bodies of men, women, and children who had been murdered. Of the estimated 47,000 people “disappeared” in Guatemala over the last several decades, she is one of the few to escape alive. Sister Dianna’s case attracted attention internationally because of the charge that the man who intervened with her captors, a mysterious “Alejandro,” may have had connections with the U.S. Embassy. Since her release, Sister Dianna has gone through an excruciating struggle to heal. Only now has she been able to write this book about her “journey from torture to truth.” She has spoken out against torture through lawsuits, interviews, testimony before government agencies, and vigils. She is the founding director of the Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition (TASSC) in Washington, D.C. The Blindfold’s Eyes, written with Patricia Davis, is published by Orbis Books. n

One of the most vital ministries is the Powerhouse of Prayer, in which retired or semi-retired Sisters are bonded through prayer with those in active ministry. The Constitution of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph proclaims that “the wisdom and prayer of our elderly and infirm Sisters are integral to the mission of the congregation.” And again: “As community we are one in mission and ministry.” What does the future hold for this community? Only God knows where my daughters will be called in the future. What they do know is that they must always and everywhere be open to the Spirit, and then forge ahead, fearlessly. Wherever you go, I shall go. No matter what the future holds, this they know: if they are to remain true to the ideals I gave them, they must never abandon their dependence on contemplative prayer or to our Ursuline charism, which calls them to justice, service, simplicity and hospitality. My dear friends in Christ, I invite you to join us in our work, to be a part of our extended Ursuline family. There is room for all! We continue to welcome young women who feel the call to a life of prayer and service as Ursulines. We invite others to join our family of Associates, an increasingly vital part of our ministry, which is open to men and women of all ages, all faiths. I encourage you to continue the generous support you have offered in so many ways. Know that you will always find a warm welcome in every Ursuline home, no matter where! As we journey together, I share with you a prayer I gave my daughters many years ago: Pray that God enlighten you, direct you, and teach you what you are to do (Prologue to the Counsels). My blessing and my love be with each of you! n

Listening for God’s Voice Brescia University students seek God in their lives

B

rescia University — Monday, 5 p.m. At St. Joseph Hall, students drift in from classes, work, study, or late afternoon relaxation. Obviously, the young men and women in this group know and enjoy one another. Obviously, too, they’re hungry. Chicken and beef enchiladas, with refried beans, are hot and ready on the long table. As always for this Monday evening gathering, the students — Andrea, this time, with help from Brandon — have created the supper. These students are members of the Paul VI Discernment Experience, initiated in fall 2000 as a collaborative project of Brescia University and the Diocese of Owensboro. Planning had actually begun four years earlier. “The initial goal was simply to set up a house for men who might be interested in priesthood,” explains Father Larry Hostetter, a member of the University faculty and director of the discernment program. “This developed into the idea of a Christian community that would have discernment as its main focus.” During the first year, a house for men was established. “A women’s house was planned all along,” explains Father

Larry, “and after the success of the first year with both men and women involved in the program, it was decided to begin a house for women.” Formation coordinators for the houses are Father Larry and Sister Ann McGrew, OSU, who also serves as campus minister for Brescia University. During the current year, eight students — three women and five men — live in the two houses, St. Joseph and St. Mary halls. Formal participants in the program, including all residents and some non-residents, make application and commit to the requirements of the program: Monday evening meal, prayer, and activities; morning prayer at 7:40 each class day and further daily prayer; responsibility to a spiritual director; participation in a service project each semester; and attendance at Mass on one day a week besides Sunday. Non-resident students who have not made these commitments may, and do, participate in various activities of the group. In all, about 25 students are involved, including some of other faith traditions. The program directors are careful to point out that the program focuses on searching for God in one’s life, whether in a vocation choice or a simpler life decision. “As a working guide,” Sister Ann states, “I define discernment as a lifelong process of listening to movements within oneself and learning to separate what is from God and what is not from God.” As one of the students explains further, “I am here to learn how to respond to God in my life…to discover who God is calling me to be, not just for myself, but for others.” Steven, the only senior resident, shakes his head when asked whether his living situation

Andrea, who lives in St. Mary Hall, relaxes with Sister Ann McGrew after the Monday evening supper at St. Joseph Hall.

resembles a frat house. “It’s more serious,” he responds. “We’re all more like-minded, more concerned about spiritual things.” Kathy, who moved from the dorm to St. Mary Hall, says that “here we have more in common. We share more deeply what we’re thinking about, what we’re struggling with. God is the basis for our decisions.” And, Brandon adds, “we care about each other like family.” On the Monday evening of the chicken and beef enchiladas, the meal and cleanup were followed by evening prayer and some time with a guest. Jacob Petri, a diocesan seminarian engaged in a pastoral year at Holy Spirit Parish, Bowling Green, Ky., shared his vocation story and his continuing discernment. Other Monday night activities include visits to religious communities, cookouts, and a monthly Holy Hour in the University Chapel. A ministry sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, Brescia University provides an appropriate setting for the Paul VI Discernment Experience. “Brescia’s Catholic atmosphere made it a natural place to develop the program,” Father Larry says. Students involved in the program tend to be fully involved in campus life. “We’re not here to separate ourselves from college life,” Andrea says with conviction. “We’re here because we are looking for more.” n

Angela, Brandon, and Rick actually enjoy after-supper cleanup. Next on the schedule: evening prayer. 7

In the Spirit of the Pioneers Mount Saint Joseph Center continues the mission of the first Ursuline Sisters at Maple Mount By Sister Amelia Stenger, OSU

ince the opening of Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center in 1983, thousands of people have come for retreats, educational programs, and quiet time away from their busy daily activities. Although the Center opened just 19 years ago, the history of its buildings and its mission of education and faith formation goes all the way back to 1874, when the first five Ursuline Sisters arrived from Louisville with zeal in their hearts and education on their minds.

S

Sister Agnes Catherine Williams ‘23, greets alumnae Winnie and Ann Riney during the 2002 Alumnae Reunion, hosted by Mount Saint Joseph Center.

The Sisters came first of all to teach the young women of western Daviess County and the surrounding areas. For 109 years, Mount Saint Joseph Academy offered an excellent high school education to thousands of young people from all over the United States and many foreign countries. From 1925 to 1950, the Ursuline Sisters offered further opportunities for women at the adjoining Mount Saint Joseph Junior College.

Senior girls from St. Mary High School, Paducah, Ky., enjoy a spring retreat at the Center. Young people from kindergarten to college come to the Center for a broad range of programs.

In 1983, when the Academy closed its doors as a school, it immediately opened as a retreat center. The continuity of faith-filled prayer and education never stopped. Following Saint Angela’s counsel to “do something differently” when the need arises, the Ursuline Sisters invested their resources in a new endeavor in the spirit of their mission to proclaim Jesus to all people. The pioneer Ursuline Sisters would be proud to see this good work that continues their work on the holy ground they first touched 128 years ago. Today the Center, which is open year round, offers retreats and programs for over 6500 women, men, children, teens, and couples. The historic buildings include a quiet chapel, comfortable bedrooms, and flexible meeting rooms for many needs.

A private retreatant prays in the Center chapel. As the Spiritual Life Office of the Diocese of Owensboro, the Center offers retreats and other opportunities for spiritual growth throughout the year. 8

Everywhere there is space for prayer, rest, and spiritual growth. The beautiful surroundings of the 780-acre farm provide many spots for quiet reflection and communing with nature. “I felt an inner peace the minute I walked onto the grounds,” wrote a participant in the 2002 Women’s Retreat. “It was an ideal place to get away from the distractions of the city and enjoy a beautiful environment where I could pray. I don’t know whether I found God here or God found me, but I am glad I came.” For information about Center-sponsored programs, hosted programs, and private retreats, please contact Sister Amelia Stenger, OSU, at 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356, (270) 229-0200. Or visit the Center Web site at www.msjcenter.org, or email msjcenter@maplemount.org. n

Rooted in the tradition of hospitality of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph and holding to Christian and family values, the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center offers and hosts programs in a rural environment of tranquility for people of all ages and faiths. The Center is a comprehensive facility providing growth in wholeness and holiness. It is available to spiritual, educational, cultural, business, and civic groups. Since their deaths, we ask God to reward them with eternal life, for their good works go with them. They shall “shine as stars for all eternity” (Daniel 12:3) for their support of the Ursuline mission and ministries. Anonymous Mary Carpini Mary Ida Cruz John P. Dunbar Suzetta Ebelhar

It’s been 25 years since Danny Wooldridge came to Sister Mary Bertha Wethington __ a reading teacher in Louisville __ to ask her to teach him to read. Now a successful contractor, Danny travels to the Mount often to visit his teacher and lifelong friend.

Embracing the Ursuline Way of Life Novices Monica and Sara begin their canonical year

or Sisters Sara Murphy and Monica Seaton, August 1, 2002, was a milestone in their journey toward profession as Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph. This date marked the beginning of their canonical year — the 12 consecutive months that Canon (Church) Law requires of all novices in religious communities. The canonical year offers the novices time, space, and opportunities to intensify their relationship with God, deepen their knowledge and love of their congregation, engage in ministry within the community, and continue personal growth and integration. There is no external ministry or employment during this year. Together with novice director Sister Nancy Murphy, Sisters Sara and Monica participate in the Sisters Monica, Nancy, Sara Studies in Spirituality Program at the Moye Center in Melbourne, Ky. This collaborative, intercommunity experience offers classes in Biblical spirituality, community living, history of religious life, prayer, vows, and many other areas essential to formation in religious life. An added benefit is peer support and supervision for the novice directors. Sisters Nancy, Sara, and Monica travel to Melbourne eleven times each semester for these two-day sessions. Sisters Sara and Monica, who are both from Owensboro, Ky., began their Ursuline journey in 1999, when they entered the

contact program, a discernment period prior to formal entrance into the congregation. In July 2000, they began their postulancy, continuing to study the Ursuline Way of Life, living it in a small Ursuline community, and determining, along with the congregation, their readiness for beginning the novitiate. During postulancy, they continued their regular employment and college classes. On the eve of the feast of Saint Angela Merici — January 26, 2002 — Sara and Monica took their next step: formal entrance into the novitiate, an intensive preparation for temporary profession of vows as Ursuline Sisters. Besides the canonical year described above, the novitiate includes a second, apostolic year, during which the novices engage in external ministries and continue preparation for profession. Between January and August 2002, Sara and Monica completed six months of this apostolic year. They will complete the remaining half between August 2003 and January 2004. This will be a time to bring closure to the novitiate experience and to make immediate preparation for vows. Throughout the two novitiate years, the novices live at Mount Saint Joseph in a small formation community. “During the past eight months I have been stretched beyond ways of realizing I could be,” Sister Sara Murphy says. “I am glad that I am here at the Motherhouse with the older Sisters who have made our community what it is today. It’s an important opportunity for me to be with the Sisters and hear their struggles, as well as their achievements and joys of religious life.” Sister Monica adds: “At this time in formation I am very thankful for this opportunity to deepen my spirituality and my relationship with God. I could probably never have had such a year outside of this community.” She too appreciates the privilege of living at the Motherhouse with the retired Sisters, “who gave so much of their lives to build this community and sustain it. This is the time when I can learn from the wisdom they share with me and carry it into the future.” n
