From our Congregational Leader Dear Friends, SDG ... AMDG ... I would jot these letters at the top of my class notes in graduate school. One day my research professor pointed to them and asked me if they were my mnemonic devices. I told him no and explained that they were the initials for two Latin phrases: “soli Deo gloria” and “ad majorem Dei gloriam.” Perhaps I should have answered yes, because those letters do remind us why we are here, doing what we are doing, being what we are. Sister Sharon SDG – soli Deo gloria – for the glory of God alone. AMDG – ad majorem Dei gloriam – for the greater glory of God. These Ursuline mottos pervade what we – Ursulines, Ursuline Associates, and those who support the mission of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph – are and do. As we celebrate the 475th anniversary of the founding of the Company of Saint Ursula, we remember that Saint Angela Merici charged us to “act solely for the love of God and zeal for the salvation of souls.” (First Legacy of Saint Angela). As I consider those words of Saint Angela, I am almost overwhelmed with the realization of the myriad ways our donors and benefactors make both our ministries possible and serve God and the people of God through their lives of faith. How blessed we are to share with so many the mission with which Saint Angela charged us. In that same light, in this issue, we are encouraged to share in the life-giving and life-changing mission of the Ursuline Sisters who have been called to minister in the health care realm. We claim as our mission, that we “proclaim Jesus through education and Christian formation in the spirit of our founder.” I believe our health care ministries embody that spirit of Saint Angela through the teaching of Saint Irenaeus, which reminds us that when we are truly, fully alive, we reflect the glory of God. I invite you then, as you enjoy sharing the news from Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center, exploring stories of our sisters in health care, rejoicing with our “not really retired” sisters, and commemorating our 475th anniversary, to celebrate your own life, fully alive, only for the glory of God. And, of course, I wish you blessings for this Advent and Christmas season and a most glorious new year.

Ursulines involved in healing ministry

needed people who had the confidence to do what was needed. They needed to study nursing,” Sister Annalita said. “We were lucky enough to have sisters volunteer. We promise to take care of each other.”

A new mission

When Sister Joseph Cecelia retired in November 1979, Sister Claudia and Sister Betsy took over the infirmary. “Sister Annalita asked if I would go to nursing school,” Sister Claudia said. “I wasn’t eager, but I was of the spirit. The community was very supportive of nursing. We were going in different fields anyway, we knew our elderly population was growing.” Sister Betsy assisted in the infirmary while she was in the novitiate in 1971. “Sister Joseph Cecelia noticed my interest in helping others and how comfortable I was with the sick and aged,” Sister Betsy said. “She began to show an interest in me and started teaching me nursing skills. She was an asset in my beginning years, a firm but excellent teacher.” After Sister David Marie’s death, Sister Betsy was asked to come home from teaching school in Leitchfield, Ky., to help in the infirmary. “It was then that I was approached with the question, ‘would I be interested in being a nurse and assisting at the Motherhouse?’ I knew that I also had a desire to teach young children and so I declined the opportunity to become an RN and went to school to be a (licensed practical nurse),” Sister Betsy said. “I do not regret for one moment the choice I made to be a nurse. It was a grace-filled moment and continues to be today.” Sister Rebecca White was a nurse when she entered the community in 1979, and she served in the infirmary from 1981-85, and again from 1988-93, before leaving the nursing ministry. She now ministers at the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center. Sister Alicia entered the community thinking she would become a special education teacher, but she left after nine months and returned to her native Henderson, Ky., finding a job in a nursing home. “I fell in love,” she said. She returned to the Ursulines in 1979 and requested the opportunity to attend nursing school. In 1986, Sister Jacinta joined the infirmary staff. She had been a teacher, but her desire to enter nursing was stoked by her brief 1982 ministry working with the poor in Chile. “It cemented in my heart and soul that I really liked nursing,” Sister Jacinta said. In the fall of 1983, she entered nursing school, graduating in 1986. She and Sister Claudia were named co-directors of health care at the infirmary. She worked at a hospital in Louisville for two years, and then spent 1993-99 nursing in the infirmary. “It was marvelous to accompany the sisters in their final days,” she said. She is now a religious presence in Breckinridge County, Ky.

A mixture of missions

While the sisters were initially trained to care for the sisters at the Motherhouse, all of them have sought ministries elsewhere at times. Sister Claudia has remained in nursing, but has served stints at hospitals in Paducah, Louisville, and Owensboro, Ky. She has been the staff nurse at the Paul Volk residential hall at Maple Mount since 2005, while also involved in a ministry of raising her niece and nephews. “I don’t think I had visions of what I would do with my nursing degree,” she said. “After I’d been (at the Mount) awhile, you realize you need to expand a little.” In Paul Volk Hall, she does mostly preventative care, blood pressure checks, orders prescriptions, and makes sure that doctors’ appointments and lab results are followed up. “Being here really connects you with the community,” she said. Sister Jacinta has mostly stayed in health care as well, serving as a nurse in Louisville and Owensboro, a couple of years as administrator of Saint Joseph Villa, and a few years explaining health issues to senior citizens through the Diocese of Owensboro. She served part of a year in Mandeville, Jamaica, working with the poor, and for the past 18 months has nursed the uninsured in Memphis. “After returning from Jamaica, one of the things I wanted to make sure of was to stay in touch with my call to serve the poor,” she said. “I wanted hands-on nursing. Church Health Center just felt so right. You hear the mission, it just resonates with me.” The Church Health Center began in 1987, and has cared for more than 70,000 people in that time, regularly seeing 36,000 patients a year in its clinic, and more than 100,000 in its wellness clinic. practitioner and a certified nursing aid. “We don’t preach to patients, but you can sense the attitude when you walk in the door,” said John Foster, clinic manager. Having a sister on the staff is beneficial, he said. “It’s not uncommon for patients to ask the staff to pray with them. It is a ministry,” he said. Sister Betsy has split her time through the years between her two loves of nursing and teaching young children. “I have used both my education as a teacher and as a nurse wherever I have been,” she said. “Every school but one that I worked for needed a school nurse, therefore I was immediately given the duties to provide first aid and to assist with medication that students needed from home. “I have been blessed with many opportunities in so many different ways because of nursing and teaching,” Sister Betsy said. “Shifting from one ministry to another has given me a broader perspective on life. It has taught me how important each ministry is to the development of the human spirit and just how important the corporal and spiritual works of mercy are for today.” Sister Betsy succeeded Sister Jacinta as administrator in Saint Joseph Villa from 2004 until 2008, when the two went to Jamaica to minister. Today, Sister Betsy is ministering at St. Francis, where the mission is: “Through our exceptional health care services, we reveal the healing presence of God,” she said. She is a “primary floater” at St. Francis, which means she works in a variety of areas. “I have opportunities to work with infants, children, teens, young adults, adults, and the elderly, which is wonderful,” she said. “I enjoy meeting new people, reassuring them, supporting them in their fears, rejoicing with them and praying with them.” Ministering in various areas has broadened her scope of nursing, she said. “This job is a dream come true for me,” Sister Betsy said. “As a young nurse, I had hopes of working in a clinic someday. The experiences and acceptance I receive at St. Francis are truly gifts from God and I am blessed to be there.” Sister Alicia never had a desire to be a nurse anywhere but the Mount, but she has alternated five stints in health care ministry with time as a youth minister, pastoral associate, and director of vocations for the community.

She is working part-time in the Villa now, while also doing music ministry in three parishes. “It’s good to do different things,” she said. “I love nursing, that’s where my heart really is, but it wouldn’t be healthy for me to work as a nurse for 10 straight years.” There are five full-time lay nurses in the Villa, another five working part-time or as needed, making sure that the sisters are getting what they need, and are responsible for nursing assistants and medication assistants. “I love geriatric nursing,” Sister Alicia said. “The difficult part of ministering to the elderly is you know they aren’t going to get better. It’s a great blessing to me to get to walk with them on that part of their journey. It’s not easy, but there’s blessing in that.”

A caring touch

Sister Emma Anne began working with holistic healing in the 1990s, after another sister told the community that reflexology was the only thing helping her father after a serious accident. Reflexology is the art of applying alternating pressure to the feet, hands, and/or ears, all of which have reflex areas that correspond to all body parts and stimulate the body’s healing potential. Sister Emma Anne took a weekend class on reflexology in 1990, but didn’t expect to pursue it. “I couldn’t imagine touching anybody’s feet,” she said. “Never say never.” After finishing a ministry as secretary to the leadership Council in 1996, she pursued reflexology full time, and continues to branch out into other areas of holistic healing. “I did find that it touched many things within a person,” she said. “I think every retreat center should offer it. It’s truly body, mind, and spirit.” Sister Rose Karen Johnson has been involved in Healing Touch ministry for 15 years, another form of noninvasive therapy that facilitates physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health. “It works with the energy in the body, that I believe comes from God,” said Sister Rose Karen, who ministers in Muhlenberg County, Ky. The sisters know they are not alone in holistic healing. “I don’t do any of them without asking God to be present,” Sister Emma Anne said. “I just think I’m blessed to see the miracles that happen in people’s lives, the healing that takes place.” n

In the joy of eternal life Sister Ann Victoria Wasylina, 86, died Oct. 12 at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 56th year of religious life. She was born Irena Wasylina in Duliby Stryj in the Ukraine, then a part of Poland. In 1942, during the Nazi occupation, she went to Austria, where she lived and worked with a farm family until coming to the United States. She came to Mount Saint Joseph in March 1950 with her friends the Stelmach family, and became a sister in 1954. She ministered at St. Columba Convent in Louisville and at Mount Saint Joseph, where she was in charge of the dairy for 29 years. The butter and cottage cheese she produced were legendary. From 1986-88, she served as minister to the sick in Grants, N.M. From 1988 until her retirement in 1995, she served in pastoral care and in hospitality at the Mount Saint Joseph Guest House. She had a beautiful singing voice and often inspired the sisters and friends by singing her favorite hymn to Mary in Ukrainian. She is survived by the members of her religious community. The funeral Mass was Oct. 14, at Mount Saint Joseph, with burial in the convent cemetery. Sister Ann Marie Scherman, 69, died Nov. 8 at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 49th year of religious life. She was a native of Ottawa, Kan. Sister Ann Marie was an Ursuline Sister of Paola, Kan., until the merger of that community with Mount Saint Joseph in 2008. She ministered in Kansas and Missouri as a teacher for 26 years, then as a chaplain and health care worker for 18 more years before moving to Maple Mount in 2010. Sister Ann Marie was an eternal optimist, known for her great kindnesses to the elderly whom she loved to serve. She loved her family, and enjoyed opera, classical music, and her friend’s chocolate Labrador Chloe. Survivors include her sister, Mary E. Bradshaw, of Leander, Texas; two brothers, Ernie Scherman of Paola, Kan., and Jim Scherman of Bartlesville, Okla.,; nieces and nephews, and the members of her religious community. The funeral Mass was Nov. 12 at Mount Saint Joseph, with burial in the convent cemetery. Gifts in memory of a Sister may take the form of donations to the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356 10

Thank You to our kind and generous donors! Dear Friends of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, Each year it is our privilege to share with you the names of all the wonderful people who have shared their time, talent, and treasure with us over the past year. Each of you holds a special place in our hearts. Without your generosity, the sisters could not fulfill their mission of education and Christian formation. We would not be Sister Amelia able to serve the many women, men, and children through our ministries in eight states, Washington, D.C., and Chile. We are able to serve because we have you as our partners in ministry. You will see two sets of donors in the report this year. Over the past years, the Retreat Center received many donations and they were listed in the Center News. The donations to the sisters were listed in the Ursulines Alive. This year we have combined the Center News with the Ursulines Alive magazine. We want to make sure that all our donors for the past year are recognized. Each one of you is so important to the mission. Next year all the donors will be listed together. You will also see a section of names under our Saint Angela Heritage Society. We are deeply grateful to these persons who, in life or in death, have named our community as the recipient of a planned gift. These generous benefactors of bequests, annuities, life insurance, or estate gifts are signs of faithful stewardship, providing for our mission into the future. Their love and support will assure that the mission continues. If you have left the Ursuline Sisters in your will and have not contacted us with this information, we invite you to call Sister Amelia. We want to thank you personally and invite you to special events with our sisters. You are a part of our family and we want to thank you. We also receive a number of in-kind donations each year. These donors are listed in this annual report. Our annual picnic would not be possible without the many donations from companies and individuals who share gifts and products with us. Thank you for your gifts over the past year. The following names represent those who donated during the fiscal year July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010. If any of this information is incorrect, we apologize. Please contact Sister Amelia Stenger at 270-229-2008 or e-mail amelia.stenger@maplemount.org to make corrections or additions. God bless each of you for your generosity. God will bless you in many ways for sharing your time, talent, and treasure. Sincerely,

Sister Amelia Stenger, OSU

Soli Deo Gloria

We rejoice in the gifts of our sisters, given for the kingdom of God Sister Agnes Cecilia Speak turned 100 on Oct. 29, surrounded by family members from across the country. Her niece Sharoll Minakes (pictured), and her husband Matt, from Double Adobe, Ariz., made their second trip this year, coming in the summer for Sister Agnes Cecilia’s 80th jubilee. Her cousin Lin Mollway and her husband Paul, from Rockford, Ill., also came for the second time. Her oldest nephew, Joe Speak, came all the way from San Antonio, Texas. Sister Agnes Cecilia is from Irvington, Ky. She ministered throughout Kentucky and in New Mexico mostly as a housekeeper for 63 years before retiring in 1995. She is now active in the Powerhouse of Prayer. Two Ursuline Sisters who are natives of North Dakota were among inductees at the Oct. 16th Hall of Fame banquet sponsored by Minot Catholic Schools in Minot, N.D. Sister Dorothy Helbling (left), a native of St. Anthony, N.D., taught math and physics at Bishop Ryan High School in Minot from 1958-74, and Sister Mary Ellen Backes (right), is a graduate of Bishop Ryan who did some student teaching there. Both the sisters were Ursulines of Belleville, Ill., before the 2005 merger with Mount Saint Joseph. The Belleville Sisters got their start in America in North Dakota, before moving the motherhouse to Belleville in 1945. Sister Dorothy gave an address representing all the sisters. “I told every class that my aim was to make each one like and know math,” she told the crowd. “I believe most of them did, but some wouldn’t own up to it!” Sister Dorothy, who was superior of the Belleville Ursulines for 24 years, continues to serve in Belleville, as a religious presence. Sister Mary Ellen, who was superior in Belleville for six years, is the pastoral assistant at St. Joseph Parish in Springfield, Ill.

After completing her sixyear term as congregational leader in July, Sister Michele Morek spent a month in the Seattle area in a transition program at the WomanSpirit Center in Bellevue, Wash. The program included information about what to expect in times of a major life transition, and provided tools for caring for oneself spiritually, mentally, and physically during those times. The experience included retreat days, book discussions, workshops (how to do inner work using art and poetry, how to deal with stress, and the like) and plenty of time for sight-seeing in the lovely Pacific Northwest. Mountains and ocean were an integral part of the program. Sister Michele said that one of the best parts of the experience was the Progoff Intensive Journaling Workshop…and the trip back, with stopovers in the Washington rain forest and at the California redwoods. The Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph were one of three religious orders honored Oct. 30 by the Catholic Education Foundation in the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kan. The foundation honored the sisters during its eighth annual Gaudeamus Dinner for their work in Catholic education. Gaudeamus means “Let us rejoice.” Thirteen Ursuline Sisters attended the event, seven of whom currently minister in the archdiocese of Kansas City. The Catholic Schools Foundation raises money to provide children in need with scholarships to attend Catholic schools in the archdiocese. Sister Sharon Sullivan, congregational leader, accepted the Catholic Education Community Service Award from Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann (pictured) on behalf of the Ursuline Sisters. The Catholic Education Foundation will provide assistance to 19 schools this year. Among those are schools in which Ursuline Sisters taught in Paola, Roeland Park, and Kansas City.
