From our Congregational Leader Dear Family, Friends and supporters of the Ursuline Sisters, Like many of the members of our Ursuline community, I grew up on a farm. We grew all kinds of vegetables, fruit trees, berries, corn and beans for the cattle, pigs and chickens, cane for molasses and cotton to sell for income. All of these plants came from seeds. All were planted just the way our mom told us to plant them. The knowledge of the science within the seeds didn’t Sister Amelia come until later in school when we were learning about the seed growth. We planted the seeds and wonderful vegetables grew. In religion classes, we studied the story of the mustard seed and I could relate to the mustard seeds we had planted in our garden. They really were not as small as the ones described in the parable, but Sister Jean Gertrude said that mustard seeds in Jerusalem were different than what we planted. In our minds, we saw these huge trees growing in the Holy Land and watched our little green spinach-like plants grow for our salads in our gardens. It wasn’t until much later that the context of sowing seeds and faith came into focus. As we studied Scripture in the novitiate and all the classes for our education degrees, the real meaning of sowing the seeds of faith came alive. It became our mission as Ursuline Sisters and educators to share faith and knowledge around the United States and the world. When our sisters came to the Mount in 1874, they didn’t know they would be reaching out to people all over the world. We thank God for those sisters who have come before us and the retired sisters here at the Mount. They have sown the seeds of faith in their classrooms, religion classes, RCIA instructions, Bible studies and many other areas for many years. They continue to pray for us each day as we work in our ministries. Today, many of our sisters are still doing the same as we continue to share our faith and lives in the schools, parishes and the many other places we minister. And you are also a great part of that mission. This issue of Ursulines Alive lists the names of the wonderful people who have been so generous to our mission over the past fiscal year. You have been there with us as we were sowing those seeds. Some wish to remain anonymous but we know who you are and God knows too. We pray for you every day in our morning Mass. We cannot begin to thank you for your generous support. You have walked with us and continue to move into the future with us as we share our faith with those with whom we minister. Thank you many times over. God bless you and those you love.

It’s a tradition that I fear is getting lost.” Kim Riney, a first grade teacher, said it’s great for the
children to see a sister in the classroom. “She has a wonderful calmness, a life-affirming presence,” Riney said. “She’s so Christlike. I’ve never seen her in a bad mood. She never says ‘no.’” Lori Whitehouse is principal of the school and values her students having the opportunity to interact with a sister. “Sister Mary Timothy shows the children that she is just like everyone else, except that her ‘job’ and vocation is in service to the Catholic Church,” Whitehouse said. “When I found out Sister was going to retire, I knew she would leave behind a void that would be hard to fill,” Whitehouse said. “The fact that she is substitute teaching at the K-3 Campus is truly a blessing. Sister Mary Timothy brings so much to the religion curriculum. Her devotion and faith come shining through.” Sister Barbara Jean Head “Educating for the future” Sister Barbara Jean has no classroom at Brescia University, but the senior accountant is still an educator. “She educates the students, especially when students have trouble paying their bills,” said Cindy Haight, who works in student accounts. “She talks about the choices they make. Her patience, her understanding, help her deal with students going through a difficult time. She ministers to them, she’s a sounding board for them. I’ve heard her offer prayers for them.” Sister Barbara Jean attends events and athletic competitions on campus, Haight said. “She’ll tell the students they did a great job last night. She eats lunch in the dining halls and talks to the students,” Haight said. “She makes them feel welcome.” Dale Cecil, vice president of Business and Finance at Brescia, said Sister Barbara Jean is a huge asset to the university. “She cares for the students, not just giving them what they need, but in a way to educate them for the future,” Cecil said. “She teaches them to learn responsibility.” Having Ursuline Sisters serving at Brescia is an important part of the school’s mission, Cecil said. “We wouldn’t be here without the Ursulines,” Cecil said. “It’s ingrained in them in a way we can’t duplicate. I’m Ursuline educated and have close ties to the Mount. But I don’t think anyone can feel for Brescia the way an Ursuline can.” Sisters Fran Wilhelm and Rosemary Keough “Positive and prayerful” Ursuline Associate Charlotte Paez began volunteering Continued on page 7

in the late 1990s with Sister Fran Wilhelm in her ministry with Centro Latino near Owensboro, Ky. At the time, the ministry served mostly male Hispanic migrant farm workers, and Paez helped with health fairs that Sister Fran organized. “The ministry changed to meet Associate every need possible,” Paez said. “Connie Charlotte Paez (Caceres) and Allen (Shreve), they all pitched in. They translated for people. Sister Rosemary took care of pregnant women and made sure their babies went to the doctor.” The role of the Ursuline Sisters was critical to the success of Centro Latino, Paez said. “The sisters only have good things to say about people,” Paez said. “Sister Fran is always positive and prayerful. They aren’t stuck in one field. They don’t say ‘I can’t try new things.’ Like Saint Angela, they saw what the needs of the time were, and worked to meet those needs. They did their spiritual duties and beyond.” While lay people such as Caceres and Shreve have been essential, Centro Latino would not have happened without the Ursuline Sisters, Paez said. “You couldn’t pay someone to do what Sister Fran does,” Paez said. “It would not have worked Sister Fran Wilhelm, left, and Sister without the Rosemary Keough at their home at Ursuline Sisters Centro Latino in Owensboro. Sister Fran started the ministry to help Hispanics in behind it. Not 1992 at an old school beside St. Peter of just Sister Fran, Alcantara, Stanley, Ky. Director receives Sister Darlene Make a Difference Award
Roxanna Trivitt, executive director of Shively Area Ministries, receives the Sister Darlene Award from Board Chair Rev. Larry Higginbotham.
Each September, the board of Shively Area Ministries in Louisville, Ky., selects a winner of the Sister Darlene Make a Difference Award to honor the late Ursuline Sister Darlene Denton and the work she did for 10 years with the ministry serving the poor. Sister Darlene, who died Sept. 5, 2011, “took risks, made things happen and was instrumental to help the ministry move to the next level.” Sister Darlene worked very closely with Roxanna Trivitt, executive director of Shively Area Ministries. Trivitt announced she was retiring to a sabbatical as of Sept. 30, after 20 years at the ministry in southwestern Louisville, so this year the board presented her with the award. This was said at the announcement: “Roxanna Trivitt has committed 20 years of her life to the growth and development of Shively Area Ministries. The fruits of her labor are obvious by the success of the organization fulfilling its mission ... responding in the spirit of Christ to persons in poverty and crisis ... uniting the community for service. We see the fruits of Roxanna’s labor but many do not see the depth of her passion for the mission, her compassion for our clients, her pastoral approach in leadership and decision making, her spiritual influence and other terrific traits too numerous to mention.” 7

From the Director...
Thanksgiving should be year-round event Dear Friends of the Retreat Center, I write this as November approaches, and I begin to be aware of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving makes me aware of gratitude. Gratitude is an everyday happening in my life. The need to be thankful for God, for people, for events, for things is all somehow tied together with a big golden bow with a cluster of Sister Mary pumpkins and squash. It seems to me that Matthias gratitude is connected to the call of being joyful. Pope Francis has challenged us to be joyful people. I ask us, do we check daily to see if gratitude is on our radar? When I look at being grateful I do believe that being grateful makes for better health. One feels better, perhaps sleeps better and maybe has a better immune system. One can be grateful for family, for church, for faith, for vacation and for a job, but one also can be grateful for less pain, grateful for a morning cup of coffee. It doesn’t take something big to cause us to be grateful; we can be grateful for small things, such as a smile, a hello. For more than a year I’ve kept a gratitude journal. Each morning I am aware of at least five things for which I need to be grateful. I write them in my journal. Before I write each morning I read what I wrote the day before and ask myself was I, am I, aware of being grateful? I am grateful for each person who comes to the Retreat Center, for each person who helps in any way at the Center, for those many people who really do care that there is a place for them to come aside, to be still, and rest with their God. I am grateful that the Diocese of Owensboro and our Bishop Medley support us. Gratitude puts into perspective all I overlook, all I take for granted. Gratitude is a year around attitude, not just a November event … not just a Thanksgiving expression. I thank you for helping to make Mount Saint Joseph Center so special, indeed a place where gratitude is plentiful. Come, enjoy it. In loving Gratitude,

hen Ursuline Sister Mary Matthias Ward became the first director of the Mount Saint Joseph Retreat Center in 1983, the Center had quickly been changed from Mount Saint Joseph Academy, which had closed three months earlier. A major renovation of the Center occurred in the mid-1990s, including a new façade and entryway, and the addition of a Memorial Garden came in 1999. The Rosary Walk was created in 2006. Sister Mary Matthias, who returned as director of the Center in May 2016, has challenged members of the new Center Advisory Board to reimagine what the Center can be and how it can serve God’s people. Below are her responses to the question “How would I envision a retreat house if I were opening one today?” We’d also like your thoughts on that question. For those of you who have visited the Retreat Center, or perhaps want to visit, please share with us what you would hope the Center could offer. Perhaps it is an addition to the facility, or maybe it’s a type of programming? Regardless, please share your thoughts on how to make our Retreat Center an even more inviting place for spirituality. The contact information is included in the box.
Sister Mary Matthias’ vision for the Center
With some retreat houses being closed today, some being changed into low-income housing projects, I feel and believe there is a great need to have places “to get away … to be still and know that I am God.” I would dare to say there is a greater need than ever for this. People are hungering for the divine. The divine is encountered in silence, with people, through reading scripture, sharing faith stories, walking in nature and communing with our God. If today I heard God’s voice say to me: “Build me a retreat house,” my plans would begin immediately. I would have a two-story retreat house. The basement would house the kitchen and dining room areas; the first
floor would house the chapel, the conference room, the breakout rooms, the administrative offices; the second floor would house the bedrooms. The outside grounds would have the rosary walk and the memorial gardens – and I would add a labyrinth, an early church form of prayer. Also I would want the Way of the Cross woven in and through the grounds. I would utilize all the shrines on the grounds by having audio recordings available for the pilgrimage to the shrines, as well as a recorded Way of the Cross. Individuals could pray on their own in whatever form they wished while outside. I would want the plants and flowers to be as maintenance-free as possible. But I would want to hire a gardener who could also serve as an extra housekeeper or kitchen worker. Sixty bedrooms would each have two twin beds that could easily be moved together for couples. Each room would have its own bathroom and shower. The main conference room would accommodate 300 people, plus four breakout rooms accommodating 30 people. Lots of storage space would be available. All tables would be round, both in the dining room and in the conference rooms. The gift shop would be a separate entity from the retreat house but would service both the retreat house and the public. An Ursuline Sister could be the director while other sisters could sell jellies, cookies, candies, and other craft items. My retreat house would be the Mount Saint Joseph Retreat and Conference Center. n

Sister Helen elected new Ursuline Council member Ursuline Sister Helen Smith was elected as the newest member of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph Leadership Council on Nov. 5, 2016. Sister Helen, who previously served as assistant superior of the Sister Helen Ursuline Sisters of Paola, Kan., prior Smith to that community’s 2008 merger with Mount Saint Joseph, fills a Council position created by the Sept. 5, 2016, death of her longtime friend Sister Kathleen Condry. Sister Kathleen took office as assistant congregational leader on July 17, 2016, but her health quickly failed. At the special election on Nov. 5, Sister Pat Lynch, who took office as a councilor on July 17, was elected as the new assistant congregational leader. Sister Helen will assume Sister Pat’s position as a councilor. She was officially installed shortly after the election. Since October 2010, Sister Helen has handled sacramental preparation work with children and teenagers at the Church of the Nativity in Leawood, Kan., a suburb of Kansas City. She plans to complete her ministry there in May 2017, and in the interim will meet with the other Council members via the Internet. Prior to the merger, Sister Helen was responsible for the buildings and grounds at Paola. Sister Helen remained in Paola following the merger awaiting the sale of the convent property, which has yet to occur. Sister Kathleen, who was superior at the time of the merger, also remained in Paola. Sister Helen Smith, right, Sister Helen grew up smiles along with Sister in Bartlesville, Okla., just Judith Nell Riney during Community Days in July at across the Kansas state line. Mount Saint Joseph. Sister She met the Ursuline Sisters Judith Nell is also on the when she attended St. John Leadership Council. Catholic School, which the Ursulines of Paola started in Bartlesville. Sister Helen attended Ursuline Academy, the boarding school run by the sisters in Paola. She joined the Ursulines after graduating from the Academy in 1964. She became a novice in January 1965, and was scheduled to make her temporary vows in January 1967, but she suddenly felt uncertain, and decided to leave the community that month. She became a teacher, and in 1972 began teaching fourth grade at Queen of the Holy Rosary in Overland Park, Kan., where Ursulines taught. She taught there as a lay person until 1979. Leaving the Ursuline community
had been such a difficult thing for her to do, she told herself she would not consider returning without something monumental happening, she said in her 2011 Sister in Ministry article. “Sister Aurelia Sullivan was a good friend of mine, she always thought I’d done the right thing in leaving,” Sister Helen said in 2011. “One day I got a letter from her saying, ‘Have you ever thought about coming back?’ Her change in attitude was that monumental event and I began thinking about returning.” Sister Helen was also concerned about her mother because her father had died. Her mother told her she was considering moving in with Sister Helen’s brother, so another barrier was removed. “Then I talked to the community leadership and they told me that I would be welcomed back with open arms,” Sister Helen said. “They even decided I had completed the novitiate experience, and prepared a re-entry process for me instead.” She re-entered the Ursulines on Aug. 15, 1979, still teaching at Queen of the Holy Rosary. She will celebrate 40 years as an Ursuline Sister in 2017. Sister Helen was a teacher or principal in Kansas until 2005. From 1990-98 she was an elected Council member in Paola, and was elected again in 2002 and 2006. The last time she served as assistant superior. She joins a Council that includes Sister Amelia Stenger as congregational leader, Sister Pat as assistant congregational leader, and Sisters Pam Mueller and Judith Nell Riney as councilors.n
Sister Pat is new Assistant Congregational Leader Sister Pat Lynch was elected to the 2016-2022 Ursuline Leadership Council when elections were held at the end of 2015. As of Nov. 5 when a new election took place, she has officially been named the assistant congregational leader. She Sister Pat is taking the place of the late Sister Lynch Kathleen Condry in that role. Both were former Ursuline Sisters of Paola, Kan. From 2009-16, Sister Pat served as office manager/ campus minister at the Didde Catholic Campus Center at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan. From 1987-94, she was an outreach minister at the St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center in Lawrence, Kan., on the campus of the University of Kansas. She left there when she was elected superior of her community. She was elected again as a councilor in 2002. Her past ministries include work as a speech pathologist (1974-81). 11

Soli Deo Gloria:
We rejoice in the gifts of our sisters, given for the kingdom of God
Sister Mary Matthias Ward was among three people honored Oct. 28 as Distinguished Alumni of Brescia University in Owensboro, Ky., the eighth Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph to receive the prestigious honor. She was honored for her varied ministry career during her 62 years as an Ursuline Sister. Sister Mary Matthias has been a teacher, principal, leader of Sister Mary Matthias the Ursuline community, retreat Ward holds her framed medallion after being director, campus minister and honored as one of the director of community life at Distinguished Alumni the Motherhouse. In May 2016 of Brescia University in she returned to one of her loves Owensboro on Oct. 28. as director of the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center. The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest award the university bestows and is the only award that Brescia University bestows upon its alumni. The Ursuline Sisters established Brescia College in 1950, and nine Ursuline Sisters continue to minister there. The Distinguished Alumni Award honors those graduates who exemplify the elements that encompass The Brescia Difference: Respect for the Sacred, Devotion to Learning, Commitment to Growth in Virtue, and Promotion of Servant Leadership. Because of the breadth and scope of their life’s work, the magnitude of their impact on the regional, national and often international scene and their examples of service and leadership, alumni who receive this esteemed honor have distinguished themselves among their peers and demonstrated that they are true stars of Brescia. Ursuline Sister Larraine Lauter received the award in 2015. Previous Ursuline honorees are Sister Vivian Bowles, Sister Ruth Gehres, Sister Michele Morek, Sister Joseph Angela Boone, Sister Rose Marita O’Bryan and Sister Dianna Ortiz. Ursuline Associate Mary Danhauer also received the award. Sister Mary Matthias is a 1966 Brescia graduate, but like all Ursuline Sisters of her day, she took a circuitous route to that degree. She joined the Ursulines as a postulant in 1953 and was considered a Brescia College student, even though all her classes were taught by the Ursuline Sisters at the Motherhouse in Maple Mount. She would continue attending Brescia on Saturdays or during the summer for 10 years, earning a bachelor’s degree in history in 1966. She was truly a “nontraditional student” before that term existed. Sister Mary Diane Taylor was honored during Brescia University’s Alumni Homecoming on Oct. 29 by having a building named in her honor. Sister Mary Diane, an

art professor at Brescia since 1967, was recognized with retiring associate professor of English David Bartholomy. The Administration building at Brescia will now be known as Bartholomy-Taylor Hall. Sister Mary Diane also serves as chair of the Division of Fine Arts. She is a 1964 graduate of Brescia with a degree in art. The two professors were honored for a combined 102 years of service to Brescia.
Sister Mary Diane Taylor and David Bartholomy hold the plaque proclaiming that the Brescia University Administration building will now be known as Bartholomy-Taylor Hall.
Sister Barbara Jean Head is the new Ursuline representative on the board of UNANIMA International, a nongovernmental organization advocating on behalf of women and children living in poverty, immigrants and refugees, and the environment. She will serve a three-year term, replacing Sister Dianna Ortiz. Among the 21 congregations represented on the board are sisters from Australia, Rome, Lagos Africa, and Canada. “The meetings were most inspiring, informative, and a very international experience,” Sister Barbara Jean said. She is senior accountant at Brescia University in Owensboro, and served as an elected councilor for the Ursulines (2004-10). Her first board meeting was the last for Ursuline Sister Michele Morek, who has served as coalition coordinator for UNANIMA since 2011 and is stepping down at the end of the year. “I was thrilled and privileged to be at this meeting where they roasted Sister Michele,” Sister Barbara Jean said. “They played on her humor, enthusiastic personality, and many accomplishments. It was truly evident that they all love her dearly and feel blessed to work with her. I am so proud of all she has done working with the United Nations. She has certainly made a positive difference in many lives and issues.”
The UNANIMA board met Sept. 22-24 in New York City. Sister Barbara Jean Head is in the second row, second from right. Sister Michele Morek is in the front row, second from left.

Powerhouse of Prayer
Sister Marie Brenda Vowels: “Jesus is my best friend” By Dan Heckel, Mount Saint Joseph Staff
Like most people, Ursuline Sister Marie Brenda Vowels likes to spend time with her closest friends. That’s why she prays all four mysteries of the rosary every day, usually before lunch. “Jesus is my best friend, and Mary too,” she said. “I also like the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. It’s a good prayer to say for someone who is dying.” Sister Marie Brenda turned 90 in April, and is now in her 71st year as an Ursuline Sister. A former educator who spent many years teaching Native Americans in New Mexico, Sister Marie Brenda now lives in Saint Joseph Villa at the Motherhouse at Maple Mount. Her main mission is taking part in the Powerhouse of Prayer. “I do feel there’s a power to prayer,” she said. “God is present. He’s with us all the time. God is important to us.” Sister Marie Brenda grew up in the small town of Vine Grove, Ky., where she and her family of 11 siblings prayed morning and evening prayers together with her parents. “We prayed for the souls in purgatory and for family members,” she said. Today she prays for everybody who asks for prayers
Sister Marie Brenda Vowels has a smile for a young visitor from Cathedral Preschool, Owensboro, on Holy Saturday, March 26, in Saint Joseph Villa.
directly, and those through the Ursuline prayer requests sent on email. From 2-3 p.m. on Fridays, she attends holy hour in the Saint Joseph Villa chapel, where the sisters have exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and benediction. She attends centering prayer on Wednesdays. Daily she spends time in prayer with the scripture for Mass, and she has a brochure that allows her to pray the way of the cross daily as well, without actually sitting in front of each station. With doctor’s orders to keep her feet elevated, Sister Marie Brenda often prays alone in her room, which – like all rooms in the Villa – is equipped with closed circuit TV connected with the Motherhouse Chapel. In this way she can be present for liturgy and prayer in the chapel. “I can pray the (Divine) Office with the sisters on TV and take communion in the hallway,” she said. “I think the Lord understands.” You can write to Sister Marie Brenda at 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356.
In the joy of eternal life SISTER KATHLEEN CONDRY, 66, died Sept. 5, at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 46th year of religious life. She was a native of Ottawa, Kan., but grew up in Kenner, La. Sister Kathleen was an Ursuline Sister of Paola, Kan., prior to the merger of that community with Mount Saint Joseph in 2008. She was superior in Paola from 2002 until the merger, and had previously served 16 years in community leadership (1982-90, 1994-2002). She was elected as assistant congregational leader for the Ursulines of Mount Saint Joseph in December 2015, and was installed in office July 17, 2016. She was renowned in Kansas for her leadership skills as an educator, serving as a teacher, principal and administrator at several schools and assistant superintendent for leadership and mission for the Archdiocesan Education Office, Kansas City, Kan. (1998-2002). From 2009-2016, she served in pastoral ministry for the Church of the Nativity in Leawood, Kan. What people will always remember about Sister Kathleen is her sense of humor, her ability to make others feel accepted and loved, and her great spirituality. Survivors include two sisters, Ellen Mary Condry of Belle Chasse, La., and Patricia Frelich of Carriere, Miss.; nieces, a nephew and the members of her religious community. The funeral Mass was Sept. 8 at Mount Saint Joseph, with burial in the convent cemetery. SISTER MARY RAYMOND DIECKMAN, 84, died Oct. 27, at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 66th year of religious life. She was a native of Kansas City, Kan. Sister Raymond was an Ursuline Sister of Paola, Kan., prior to the merger of that community with Mount Saint Joseph. She was nicknamed “Mighty Mouse” for her small stature but huge impact on all those to whom she ministered. She was a teacher and principal at schools in Kansas and Oklahoma, and served 22 years in leadership, including eight years as superior of the Ursulines of Paola (1974-82). Survivors include her sister, Betty DuPont of Paola, Kan., nieces and nephews and the members of her religious community. Vocations
Ursuline Sister Monica Seaton begins her journey as director of vocation ministry When Ursuline Sister Monica Seaton was growing up, she thought priests and sisters were on a higher level than she was. “That leads to a feeling of unworthiness,” Sister Monica said. “But that was seeing them from a distance. When you get to know a sister, you realize we’re human. You have to have that personal encounter.” Finding opportunities for those “personal encounters” between sisters and women who may be called to religious life is now one of Sister Monica’s goals in her new role as director of Vocation Ministry for the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph. “I don’t think there’s a lack of a call to religious life,” she said. “We need to let people know you don’t have to be a superhuman to be in religious life. We are ordinary people doing ordinary things in service to God’s people.” Recent words by Pope Francis have become her mantra in vocation ministry: “Vocations aren’t the result of planning, but an encounter with God that changes your life.” Sister Monica is a native of Owensboro, Ky., who is serving in her 14th year of religious life. She previously served as a special education teacher in Owensboro and Memphis, Tenn., and was religion coordinator at St. Patrick Catholic School in Memphis from 2013-15. From January to June this year she was assistant to the vicar of religious and director of catechesis for the Diocese of Memphis before returning to Maple Mount. Making the switch to vocation ministry was a mutual decision between Sister Monica and the new leadership Council for the Ursuline Sisters. “I think with the new leadership, this is a pivotal point in our community and our history,” Sister Monica said. “Vocation ministry is about our relationship with God, and how we help others deepen their relationship and love for God. How can we help them to discern their own vocation?” Sister Amelia Stenger, congregational leader for the Ursuline Sisters, said Sister Monica is energetic and
has a strong commitment to the Ursuline community, two important qualities for a vocation director. Sister Monica likened a vocation director to a companion on a journey with someone who may be feeling a call to religious life. “You help them to listen to Sister Monica those inner stirrings where God is leading you,” she said. “Someone to see things we may not see when looking at ourselves.” Sister Monica believes having Sister Stephany Nelson as a novice these days will be an added benefit, to serve as an example that women do still hear the call to religious life and answer it. Her early months on the job involve learning from previous vocation ministers and other religious communities. Sister Monica attended the National Religious Vocation Conference Convocation in Overland Park, Kan., Oct. 27-31, 2016, and hopes to attend an orientation for vocation directors next summer. In the meantime, she knows being visible and approachable is her first step. “If I were a kid selling lemonade, I’d put the lemonade stand in the front yard, not hide it in the back yard,” Sister Monica said. “We have to look for ways to reach people.” She is participating in campus ministry at Brescia University with Sister Pam Mueller, and visited two schools in Memphis during National Vocation Awareness Week, Nov. 6-12. “I want to go to schools and youth groups in Owensboro,” she said. “If you want a speaker, let me know.” To reach Sister Monica, email her at vocations.msj@ maplemount.org or call her at 270-229-4103, ext. 218. To learn more about the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, visit ursulinesmsj.org.

Dear Friends, We are blessed because of you! We are thankful for what the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph are able to do with these blessings. There is no way of knowing how many people the sisters have touched through their ministries; the ministries you help support. With sisters who serve as teachers and a Catholic school superintendent, the number of children influenced in one year is in the thousands. Our Retreat Center serves over 3,700 people a year, and with sisters serving others living in poverty, it’s easy to see there are thousands of people who have been helped by the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph. The holiday season helps us to reflect and be thankful for all the gifts and blessings we’ve received over the past year. The season reminds us of all the good things God has done for us, and it gives us hope for all the good things that FOUNDERS...............$25,000+ Anonymous Ms. Martha Maloney

We are deeply grateful to these persons who, in life or in death, have named our community as the recipient of a planned gift. These generous benefactors of bequests, annuities or estate gifts are signs of faithful stewardship, providing for our mission into the future. Sowing Seeds of Faith
Saturday, April 29, 2017 SAVE THE DATE! Inspired by the Ursuline Sisters’ love for God’s green earth and the importance of sowing seeds of faith every day, the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph are partnering with the city of Owensboro to reforest a park in Daviess County, Ky. On April 29, 2017, the city of Owensboro, with the help of the Ursuline Sisters and their supporters, will be hosting an Arbor Day event. The trees planted that day are in honor of the Ursuline Sisters’ supporters who donate $100 or more to this year’s Annual Appeal, “Sowing Seeds of Faith.” Please make your donation of $100 or more by Jan. 20, 2017, to ensure that a tree in your honor is planted on April 29. In the words of Congregational Leader Sister Amelia Stenger, “The Ursuline Sisters believe that trees are special gifts to us – without them there is no life. Thank you for helping us save a small piece of our world and for supporting our community as we continue our mission of education and Christian formation.” More details to come regarding this event ... We’d love for you to come celebrate with us, so mark your calendars for April 29. The trees are a symbol of your role in the sisters’ missions – they both will grow because of you! Have you returned your Sowing Seeds of Faith card? If you did not receive an annual appeal letter in the mail, contact Betsy Mullins at 270-229-2008 or betsy.mullins@maplemount.org or go to this online link: www.ursulinesmsj.org/help-the-sisters 19
