From our Congregational Leader Dear Friends, You will receive this Ursulines Alive during the Advent season. It is a time of waiting, a time of preparing, a time of giving. It is a time to think about all the wonderful things God has given us. We think about the people we love, our families and friends. This year, after all the terrible things that have happened in Texas, Las Vegas, Puerto Rico, New York and other states, we come together in prayer asking Sister Amelia for calm in our country and in the world. We ask for a generous spirit to help those who have suffered through floods, hurricanes and earthquakes. There are so many opportunities for us to give and share. If each one of us can look for one way to do something for those around us who are in need, the real spirit of Christmas will be fulfilled. Jesus is the greatest gift we have received, and Jesus is the greatest gift we can share. Here at the Mount, we will be praying for each of you in a special way during this Advent and Christmas season. You are remembered in prayer at each Mass we celebrate. In this issue you will also see the names of many people who have generously shared with us. You are a blessing and gift to us. You make it possible for us to continue serving the Church and the people of God in so many ways. Our sisters are so blessed to have you standing beside them as they fulfill our mission of education and Christian formation. We are so grateful for all your love and support. We are grateful for your help in taking care of the Earth by helping us plant over 400 trees last year. We hope to plant 1,000 this year. With your help, we can reach that goal. Thank you so much. May you be blessed during these days before Christmas. May the Holy Family bless your family with love and peace.

Those we serve...

By Dan Heckel, Mount Saint Joseph Staff

Ursulines in western Kentucky fill many roles Stephanie Dossett is a longtime member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in tiny Henshaw, Ky., and knows the difference it makes when there is a woman religious in the parish. “We’ve had sisters here and we’ve been without a sister. Life is much better here if we have a sister,” Dossett said. Since 2010, Ursuline Sister Alicia Coomes has served at St. Ambrose – as well as St. William Parish in Marion, and St. Francis Borgia in nearby Sturgis. “Having a sister is very important, especially to the younger people,” Dossett said. “It gives them an opportunity to see another vocation for themselves. People feel comfortable talking to Sister Alicia about their troubles.” This is the fourth installment of “Whom They Serve,” featuring insights from people who serve with or who are served by the Ursuline Sisters. This focus is on the sisters fulfilling their missions in far western Kentucky – Sister Alicia, Sister Martha Keller and Sister Teresa Riley. Sister Michael Marie Friedman also serves as a minister of presence in Grand Rivers, Ky., but she was unavailable for this article. Sister Alicia Coomes...“A Spiritual Leader” Stephanie Landry was at a crossroads in her life six years ago. She’d moved back to Marion from Florida, a bad marriage was ending and she struggled with a heart ailment. She’d just started going to church again at St. William Parish when she met Sister Alicia. “She’s very compassionate,” Landry said. “She helped me to come back into the Church. She took me to doctor’s appointments. She gave me a whole new outlook on religious life and helped me to be a better me. It’s a friendship I’ve never had before.” Landry works with Sister Alicia to compile the bulletin at St. William each week. Sister Alicia provides worship aids, visits the homebound and cantors at Mass. “She does a whole lot of everything,” Landry said. “She showed me how to understand the Bible better. She taught me how to pray,” Landry said. “She takes the time with you. She’s a good sounding board for a lot of people. She helps sometimes just by being calm.” Sister Alicia logs 500 miles on her car every two weeks serving at the three small parishes. “We’ve gone through the fear of losing her,” Landry said.

“Our parishes bonded together to raise money needed for her salary. She’s that important to us. We call it the ‘SOS Fund’ – Save Our Sister.” Michele “Miki” Wright and her husband Don Wright are parishioners at St. Francis Borgia in Sturgis. “Having a sister here means everything,” Miki Wright said. “We’ve had sisters in the past, and when they leave, the void can’t be filled.” In fall 2016, Miki Wright went on a mission trip to Honduras with Sister Alicia and Sister Larraine Lauter, which deepened her relationship with Sister Alicia even more. “Sister Alicia is a wonderful confidante,” Miki Wright said. “She has so many hats she wears. She has tireless energy.” Sister Alicia is trained as a nurse and does health screenings for members of the parish, Miki Wright said. When Don Wright had heart surgery four years ago, Sister Alicia was a constant presence in the hospital, he said. “Every time I opened my eyes, she was there,” he said. “She did a lot of home visits for months.” “She’s also our music minister, we never had one of those,” Miki Wright said. “Our Masses are so much better. She’s trying to pull us out of the same old six hymns.” Don Wright estimates St. Francis Borgia went from 75 people at Mass to 150 since Sister Alicia and Father Ryan Harpole came to the church. “We always have new music, new programs,” he said. “She keeps everyone informed. Any cause, she will be there, no matter how busy she is. Children Continued on page 4

Dossett said. “Sister Alicia and Father step up to serve a lot of grieving people. There is so much in life people need help with. She’s there to assist with that.” The most important role Sister Alicia serves is spiritual leadership, Dossett said. “You can’t have too many spiritual leaders. You see someone giving her life to God,” Dossett said. “It doesn’t matter how old you get, sometimes you just need a different perspective. When you have someone giving a good example, sometimes that’s all you need.” Sister Martha Keller...“Bringing out the best” Kentucky State Trooper Joey Adams had a lot of questions when he decided to join the Catholic Church in 2016. He learned he could always find the answers by going to Ursuline Sister Martha Keller. “She’s just genuine to me,” Adams said. “I had this stereotype about sisters, I assumed they all wore black. I didn’t realize she would be down to earth. She seemed to laugh at my sense of humor a lot. It made it more comfortable, there was no pressure.” Sister Martha is pastoral associate at St. Jerome Parish in Fancy Farm, where she has served since 2012. “She pays attention to what people do well and pulls that out in you,” said Joyce Toon, a parish member who is on the RCIA team and the Social Concerns committee. “She’s very spiritual. She starts all our meetings with a prayer, it always suits the occasion. She’s good with little children and older people. Social Concerns has taken off since Sister came. She gives us direction.” Lori Wilson is head of the Social Concerns committee and went on a mission trip Sister Martha led to Mandeville, Jamaica, in 2015. “Sister Martha had already been there. She knew people from previous trips,” Wilson said. “Their faces would light up when they saw Sister. She would keep us going when we were tired. She wanted our parish to experience what she experienced. “She brings out the best in people,” Wilson said. “She wants to give and help the needy and sick. She started our Thanksgiving meal for the needy in our community. She makes you want to help.” Sister Martha sets a good example

just love her.” Father Harpole has been pastor at all three parishes for four years and said he and Sister Alicia strike a good balance. “A parish without a nun is missing out on something,” he Stephanie Dossett shows Sister Alicia Coomes how to make a change in a said. “It’s invaluable certificate on Oct. 11. The two minister to the ministry. together at St. Ambrose Church in She makes a big Henshaw, Ky. difference. I have no idea what we’d do for music. In faith formation, we would need a lot more volunteers, and they are hard to find,” Father Harpole said. “Some people would be left out.” Sister Alicia visits the sick and sees a lot of homebound women, Father Harpole said. “It’s nice to have someone with me, especially someone with a nursing background,” he said. “She can check on them. I wouldn’t know what to do.” The two share faith formation duties to make sure there is always a religious presence. “It’s good for the kids to see the vocations available,” he said. Sister Alicia is the only woman religious in the county, he said. “It’s hard to get vocations without seeing an example.” Ethan Martin has been playing music at the three parishes since he was 13 years old. He’s now 26 and is grateful for Sister Alicia’s presence. “She has great ideas and tries to keep the congregation involved,” Martin said. “She began the youth Mass once a month at all three parishes, we use more praise and worship music. The kids do everything at the Mass. She helps coordinate that, and meets with the kids to practice.” Martin plays piano at the 5:30 p.m. Saturday Mass at St. Ambrose, the 9 a.m. Mass at St. Francis Borgia and the 11 a.m. Mass at St. William. “When I first started playing, it was just me, we had no lead singer,” he said. “It helped me tremendously when Sister Alicia arrived. All the liturgy worship aids, she got those for us. She has knowledge of songs I’ve never heard of. If we want to learn Sister Martha Keller, center, is joined by new songs, she leads that.” two parishioners of St. Jerome Parish Dossett, who volunteers doing in Fancy Farm, Ky., on Oct. 10. for others in the parish by her work ethic, Wilson said. “She goes lickety-split,” Wilson said. “No matter how busy she is, she always has a smile, is always jolly.” Father Darrell Venters has been pastor at St. Jerome for eight years, and said parishioners like having a sister. “She brings the Ursuline charism of education and social justice, as well as a pastoral sense of care for people,” he said. “This community has provided a lot of sisters over the years, Ursulines and Sisters of Charity. They are a witness to a way of life – their vows, simplicity of living.” People are mystified by the priesthood and religious life, even though they make commitments in their marriages, Father Venters said. He enjoys having a sister on staff to share in explaining religious life. “We live a way of life, we don’t have a career. From that, ministry flows,” he said. “We’re doing ministry in someone’s home, or playing with kids on a ballfield. We don’t live future-oriented lives. People think about their kids, retirement, career advancement, their mortgage payments. We’re free from a lot of that. We focus more on today. It gives a different view of life.” “Providing direction” is a recurring comment from everyone who works closely with Sister Martha. “Her influence has empowered people,” Father Venters said. “She’s an excellent teacher. I watch her with a group of kids, and I think, ‘I could never do that.’” Sister Martha works closely with the staff at St. Jerome, which Father Venters appreciates. It’s important to him that everyone operates as a team. “She’s good at making people believe they can do outreach,” said Lacy Riddle, director of music and liturgy. “If she sees you having a bad day, she’ll sit down and listen to you. I have a son who is on the autism spectrum, she’s been wonderful to talk to. I think a lot of people feel that way, she’s someone you can confide in.” Sherry Jones, the secretary at St. Jerome, went on the Mandeville trip in 2015. She works with Sister Martha in registering people for religious education. “She’s very thorough, she does a lot of research,” Jones said. “I think a lot of people like having a sister.” Marie Woodrum, the parish administrator, said Sister Martha is good at bringing more people into ministry. “She brings the better out in you,” Woodrum said. “She probably doesn’t realize it, but she makes you want to be a better person.”

Sister Teresa Riley...“Faithful presence” Father Greg Trawick wishes his parish, St. Henry in Aurora, didn’t have to share the services of Ursuline Sister Teresa Riley with St. Pius Parish in Calvert City. “We’d like to keep her for ourselves,” he said with a smile. Sister Teresa is a minister of presence in these two tiny parishes in the far western corner of the state. In the 1980s, the late Bishop John J. McRaith began asking for sisters to serve the small Catholic populations in western Kentucky, and the Ursulines have responded ever since. “I’m very familiar with this ministry and how powerful it is,” Father Trawick said, recounting his own experience with Sister Walter Louise Lush in the early 1990s. “Sister Teresa has been a great blessing, following the tradition of the sisters who preceded her.” Sister Teresa’s kindness, wisdom and her presence in the larger community is a benefit in the mostly Protestant area, Father Trawick said. “She’s breaking down ignorance and misunderstanding about who the Church is, what we are,” he said. “People have preconceived notions about our faith. Sister is here to show people in a very real way that we believe in Jesus, and we’re not into idol worship.” Sister Teresa’s presence Sister Teresa Riley, center, is joined by Carol is a blessing in Sauer, left, and Loretta Vargocko on Oct. at St. Henry Catholic Church in Aurora, so many ways, 10 Ky. The three are members of Martha’s Father Trawick Circle, who clean the church following the said. Tuesday morning Mass. “She shares the word of God and lives it by example,” he said. “She offers kindness, prayers, supports parishioners and visits the sick. I know many of the sick and shut-ins appreciate her coming by and brightening their day.” On Tuesdays, Sister Teresa joins the other members of Martha’s Circle after 8 a.m. Mass at St. Henry to clean the church. She has been coming to St. Henry for six years. “She’s one of our vacuumers,” Loretta Vargocko said. “She’s a big presence in the community. I go with her to take communion to the nursing home. Sister has a problem saying ‘no.’ Whatever you ask Sister, she’ll do it.” “She’s a great eucharistic minister and lector for us,” Carol Sauer said. “She’s an inspiration to me, all she’s able to do. She’s a dear, sweet, kind lady.” “We know the (women religious) population is dwindling,” Vargocko said. “But we’ve got ours and she’s a keeper.”n 5

The first sisters

Sister Phuong, center, waves goodbye as she and Sisters Lanh, left, and Thoa get ready to leave Mount Saint Joseph for their first day of classes at Brescia University on Aug. 16, 2017.

How the sisters came to Maple Mount

Ursuline Sister Sharon Sullivan was congregational leader in 2013 when she received a call from Brescia University in Owensboro, Ky., asking whether the sisters could take care of a couple of Vietnamese sisters. Father Bao Nguyen, a Jesuit priest who has sought American education for religious sisters in Vietnam, contacted Brescia for assistance. “It’s hard to say no to him,” Sister Sharon said. Brescia agreed to grant scholarships to two sisters with the Lovers of the Holy Cross community. With very little information other than that, the Ursuline Sisters gave a tentative ‘yes,’ Sister Sharon said. “We did some homework to make sure the Lovers of the Holy Cross were a genuine religious community,” she said. (The community traces its roots in Vietnam to 1670, when it was founded by a French bishop.) “We talked with the sisters at the Motherhouse about how we could provide transportation to Brescia. Once they got here, there appeared a number of sisters who acted as mothers.” Sister Huyen Vu and Sister Anh Tran were the first two sisters to arrive. Sister Sharon always assumed more sisters would come, despite some early struggles with providing transportation. “I never stopped to think that anyone would think it wasn’t right for them to come,” Sister Sharon said. “That’s what we’ve always done, in one way or another. This is simply a sign of the times, a need that exists.” “When they got here, I had fun watching,” Sister Sharon said. “These were women in their 30s. Initially it was as if we’d gotten new novices and the older sisters were going to take care of them. It was fun to watch the sisters realize that these were women, vowed religious, not girls.”

Sister Huyen and Sister Anh set the precedent for the Vietnamese sisters who followed them – joyfulness and a zeal for hard work. Sister Anh completed her degree in theology at Brescia in December 2016 and is now working on a master’s degree at the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis. Sister Huyen completed her degree in psychology from Brescia in May 2017, and is now pursuing a master’s degree in theology from St. Meinrad School of Theology in Indiana. “I recognized the environment, the convent, as a good place to live,” Sister Huyen said. “I received a lot of support and help. Many sisters helped me with my mission at Brescia.” Sister Huyen said she admires the Ursuline Sisters and wants to follow their example. “They work so hard, even when they are elderly,” she said. “They still find something to work on in their life. They serve the Church, serve Jesus. They never tire. They are very faithful. They encourage me a lot. “I will tell the sisters in Vietnam that, even when we get old, we still serve the Church,” Sister Huyen said. “Be faithful to our mission and serve the Church.” All the Vietnamese sisters have helped Ursuline Sister Grace Swift with her ministry of tending the grapevines on campus and making jams and jellies. Sister Huyen was the most active helper. “Huyen helped me with weeding around the grapevines,” Sister Grace said. “When I made jam, she would wash the dishes. She’d help me peel apples when I made apple butter. One year she practically picked all the blackberries by herself.” “In their culture, people are expected to work fast and hard,” Sister Grace said. “They crack nuts better and faster than other people do. The whole group shucked corn – they got down on the floor.” Sister Grace appreciates the spirit of the Vietnamese sisters. Continued on page 8

“They bring a lot of life,” she said. “What amazes me is how many vocations they have, even though the Church is so persecuted in Vietnam.”

New arrivals

In August 2015, Sisters Anh and Huyen were joined by Sister Mai Pham, a Dominican Sister of Saint Rose of Lima. Two Dominican Sisters of Saint Catherine of Siena – Sisters Thoa Phan and Lanh Hoang – came in January 2017. When Sisters Phuong and Thanh arrived in August, the Vietnamese Sisters joined Ursuline Sisters Monica, Sharon, and Jacinta Powers to form a small prayer group at the Mount. “Sister Jacinta and I wanted to share community with them and learn about their culture,” Sister Monica said. “Their expression of gratitude is wonderful. We meet on Thursdays and read the Sunday Gospel. Not one time have they failed to offer thanks that they live here and have the opportunity to go to school.” Sister Sharon said the Vietnamese sisters bring a universality of the faith journey, sharing with the small prayer group that it doesn’t matter where one is from – the journey to and from God is the same. “These sisters come from a Communist country, where they can’t teach children beyond a certain age, and they can’t do faith expressions in public,” Sister Sharon said. “They don’t care how it affects their mission, they just go do their mission. There have always been obstacles in their way. They don’t focus on the obstacles, they focus on the mission.” Sister Amelia Stenger, congregational leader since 2016, said the Vietnamese sisters are committed to their education at Brescia University. “They will take what they learn back to their religious communities in Vietnam and teach their sisters there,” Sister Amelia said. “In turn, those sisters will teach the children in their kindergarten programs. They are helping us continue our Ursuline mission of education and Christian formation.” 8

Sisters Anh, left, and Huyen helped celebrate the feast of the Assumption in 2014 by making 150 egg rolls for the Ursuline Sisters.

Sisters Anh, left, and Huyen put on a Vietnamese New Year presentation with singing and an umbrella dance for the Ursuline Sisters in 2015.

“These sisters bring joy and laughter to our community,” Sister Amelia said. “They are hard workers and willing to help in any way they can. We are so glad they are here with us.”

Learning from the Ursulines

Sister Huyen said she learned many lessons from the Ursuline Sisters in her four years at the Mount, with the three greatest being generosity, acceptance and love. “I feel more adapted, more confident, very comfortable,” Sister Huyen said. “I could speak very little English when I came, now I understand more. Sister Ruth (Gehres) Sister Mai, center, sits wtih Ursuline is an excellent tutor, Sisters Sara Marie Gomez, left, she has many good Helen Smith (in back) and Luisa suggestions. I admire her Religious at Mount Saint Joseph very much.” Conference and Retreat Center. Sister Huyen’s community is allowed to teach only kindergarten students, but they can instruct teenagers through their churches. She hopes to utilize her psychology and theology degrees to work with orphaned children in Vietnam. “It’s a big problem, how to educate children without parents,” Sister Huyen said. “They receive a lot of love from us. How can we let them know they are a blessed gift from God? It’s very difficult, but I am willing to work with them. I want to further my education with theology to counsel them like a spiritual director.” Sister Mai spent 15 months in Houston living Continued on page 9

with Sisters of Charity before coming to the Mount in 2015. “For six months, I could not eat American food,” Sister Mai said. “Now I cannot give up anything. A Dominican Sister told me, ‘If you Sister Anh, left, and Sister Huyen cut the want to learn corn for shucking in the Mount’s small English, eat a dining room on Aug. 19, 2014. hamburger.’” Sister Mai quickly came to love Maple Mount and the Ursuline Sisters. “They welcome everyone,” she said. “We had Vietnamese visitors from Evansville (Ind.) come to see us. The Ursuline Sisters welcomed them and gave them a meal. It was really sweet.” Sister Mai said the tasks the Vietnamese sisters do at the Mount are not work – they are happy to give back to the Ursuline Sisters. “We just enjoy cutting corn and making blueberry jam,” she said. “The Ursuline Sisters give their time for us, they care about us very much. It’s like home. We are all in religious life. God loves each of us. We live the same vocation, so we know each other.” Sister Lanh and Sister Thoa have only lived at the Mount since January, but they quickly became impressed with the leadership of Sister Amelia. “Sister Amelia works in the office. She also works with quilting, and she cares for the older sisters in the (Saint Joseph) Villa,” Sister Lanh said. “She is an example to follow.” Sister Amelia’s example had an impact on Sister Thoa. “When I went home over the summer, I visited the older sisters,” Sister Thoa said. Still in their first months at the Mount, Sister Thanh and Sister Phuong continue learning about life at the Mount, but they both marvel at how welcome the Ursulines make them feel. “They opened their house and their hearts to us, even though they didn’t know us,” Sister Thanh said. “We will take their welcome and hospitality back to Vietnam,” Sister Phuong said.n

Vocations

Follow our Vocations Facebook page! We are excited to announce that in October 2017, we officially rolled out our Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph Vocations Facebook page. If you are a Facebook user, we invite you to like the page and share the page with others. The address is: www.facebook.com/UrsulineSistersMSJVocations Some future dates to keep in mind to celebrate and promote religious vocations: • Feb. 2, 2018–World Day for Consecrated Life • March 8-14, 2018–National Catholic Sisters Week According to a report from the National Religious Vocation Conference (NRVC), statistics show that, of the recent vocations to religious life and priesthood, “Although Catholics do not typically see it as their role to encourage vocations, women and men are nearly twice as likely to consider a vocation when encouraged by another person. People who are encouraged by three persons are five times more likely to consider a vocation than someone who was not encouraged by anyone.” If you know a person who has the gifts needed to live religious life, tell them. The class has been delayed to begin the week of Oct. 15, 2018, and run to July 2020. The program, offered at the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center, graduated its sixth class in August 2017 (see photo at right). The program prepares its graduates to be spiritual directors and walk with people on their journey with God. The program will continue to accept participants in its next class throughout the coming year. From the Director... Check out new audio recordings when visiting us Dear Friends of the Retreat Center, We ushered fall in while summer hovered nearby. And now winter seems to be side-stepping on our fall days and evenings. Nuts are falling, squirrels are scrounging at finding homes for their storage. And we wait for that first frost which will once again help to paint the area with yellow, orange, rust and golden Sister Mary leaves. Matthias Overall, 2017 moves right along into 2018. The Conference and Retreat Center moves daily with people calling to reserve its use. People are being invited to stop by for a tour. I look at all of this and praise God for all the blessings. We have audio recorded a trip to the shrines on our grounds. Also, the rosary and the Way of the Cross are audio recorded. You may come by the front desk of the Retreat Center, check out a CD and a player and walk the shrines, or you may sit in one spot and listen to the journey. When you finish, please check the player and CD back in at the front desk. This is a little added feature to the quiet of the Retreat Center. We are in the midst of Thanksgiving time. For what and for whom are we thankful? Hopefully we are filled with gratitude from the moment we awaken until we fall asleep at the end of each day. Let us be aware of those who have less than we, who may be lonely, and may we reach out to them now. May our prayer at Mass include all those many who were harmed by hurricanes, floods, fires and senseless shootings. Then we move into Advent season, a time of preparing for the coming of Christmas. How will we do it? Extra prayer, more silence and reflection? Maybe between Thanksgiving and Christmas you just wish to spend a day here at the Retreat Center. That would be great … just call us to let us know that you wish to come for a day. The Center belongs to all of us. Come on home!

Soli Deo Gloria:

We rejoice in the gifts of our sisters, given for the kingdom of God

Sister Sharon Sullivan became the ninth Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph to be honored as a Distinguished Alumna of Brescia University during a ceremony Oct. 27 in Owensboro, Ky. “I was quite surprised,” Sister Sharon said. “I didn’t think I’d done anything to deserve it.” The award was created to honor graduates who exemplify the elements that encompass The Brescia Difference: Respect for the Sacred, Devotion to Learning, Commitment to Growth in Virtue, and Promotion of Servant Leadership. Leaving behind a career in the private sector and with the Girls Scouts of America, Sister Sharon earned her teacher certification from Brescia in 1975, and worked in public schools as a special education teacher. She eventually joined the Ursuline Sisters in 1982, and began ministering at Brescia in 1984 as director of residential life. Through the years she served as a special education professor, chairwoman of the School of Education and academic dean and vice president for Academic Affairs. She held that position until 2010, when she began a sixyear term as congregational leader for the Ursuline Sisters. Sister Sharon returned to Brescia in January 2017. She is now an associate professor, coordinator of the special education program and a consultant with the School of Education on a variety of accreditation elements. Sister Sharon joins Ursuline Sisters Mary Matthias Ward, Larraine Lauter, Vivian Bowles, Ruth Gehres, Michele Morek, Joseph Angela Boone, Rose Marita O’Bryan and Dianna Ortiz as recipients of the honor. Ursuline Associate Mary Danhauer also received the award. Every year since 2000, at least two graduates of the former Mount Saint Joseph Academy or Junior College have been awarded the Maple Leaf Award, given to those who “personify the values of their Mount Saint Joseph education in contributions to their local faith communities, civic communities, and/or Mount Saint Joseph.” Sister Mary Irene Cecil, a 1945 graduate of the Academy, was one of the 2017 winners honored on May 21. She taught early grades, was reading supervisor in the Archdiocese of Louisville, and coordinated the staff for the Diocese of Owensboro. She taught religious education classes throughout the diocese, visited the sick in a parish, and along with Sister Clarita Browning, developed a pastoral care program for the elderly sisters at Maple Mount. Sister Mary Irene served the Ursuline

community in leadership as a counselor and as congregational leader from 1980-88. Now in her 71st year as a sister, she still serves the sisters in Saint Joseph Villa with her gift of sewing. Her nominator, Sister Mary Jude Cecil, called her a model of Saint Angela Merici. “She is an example of a dedicated, prayerful, contemplative, gracious and helpful Ursuline to all of us.”

The RiverPark Center, the performing arts center in Owensboro, Ky., honored Sister Elaine Burke for 25 years of volunteering. Sister Elaine was on hand for the opening gala at RiverPark on Sept. 12, 1992, and she is one of six people who has been a consistent volunteer ever since. Sister Elaine returned to Maple Mount in 1991 after ministering in New Mexico for eight years, and began volunteering at the RiverPark the following year. Volunteer duties include handing out programs at the entrance to Cannon Hall, helping patrons find seats, ushering students during school programs, making popcorn for Friday After 5 and performing other duties as assigned.

The Diocese of Owensboro’s Jubilee Celebration for Religious was held at Saint Martin’s Parish in Rome, Ky., on Oct. 21. The jubilarians were recognized for their many years of dedication. Powerhouse of Prayer

Sister Marie William asks God to lead, then follows By Dan Heckel, Mount Saint Joseph Staff

Sister Marie William Blyth was working in a Kansas parish when one day she prepared a reflection on the daily readings. “Someone came up to me afterward and said, ‘You really said what I needed to hear.’ I said, ‘I did?’” Sister Marie William said. “Because what I planned to say is not what came out. When you ask God to lead you, God will lead.” The power of prayer is prevalent in Sister Marie William’s life. She now lives at the Motherhouse in Maple Mount and is active in the Powerhouse of Prayer. “We all know that we have the best example of the power of prayer with Jesus himself,” she said. “Before he did anything, Jesus prayed. He encourages us to do the same.” Sister Marie William has a gift for prayer. Her life experiences have taught her that people can approach God in different ways. “When people ask you to pray with them, that can be hard,” she said. “I had a spiritual director who told me, ‘When you’re by yourself, pray out loud or choose a prayer hymn.’ I started doing that and hoped no one thought I was crazy,” she said with her signature grin. “The next time someone asked me to pray, it came much easier. The Holy Spirit just comes.” In her days of leading discussion on scripture passages, she asked the participants to put themselves in the scripture story. “How would you react in each situation?” she asked them. “Use your response as your prayer for the rest of the day. When you do that kind of prayer, something else comes out. It’s amazing.” “Some people have said they have trouble praying, they don’t know how to say what they should say,” Sister Marie William said. “I tell them to pull up a chair and assume Jesus is there. Just talk to him naturally, he’s the greatest friend you’ll ever have. Deeply listen to what he’s trying to

You can read many prayers written by Sister Marie William on our website: ursulinesmsj.org/about-us/saint-angelamerici/reflective-moments-archive say to you.” Prayer opportunities can be found in unusual places, Sister Marie William said. “I find watching the news is another form of prayer,” she said. “I talk to the Lord and say, ‘You know what’s going on, we need to get over all this.’” Even getting distracted while praying is an opportunity, she said. “Praying the rosary, I get distracted. It’s a prayer to try to get back where you were,” Sister Marie William said. “Give the distraction up in prayer.” Among her favorite items to pray with is the picture “Christ at Heart’s Door” by Warner Sallman, which pictures Jesus knocking on a door that has no outside handle. “I always have to be sure I’m opening the door, and make sure he’s not knocking in vain,” she said. The rosary, statues in the chapel, stained glass windows and art are other items that elicit prayer in her. A native of Colorado, Sister Marie William said nature also helps with her prayer life. “Our campus is an inspirational spot,” she said. The sisters in the Powerhouse of Prayer pray for employees and other groups. Sister Marie William is the prayer sister for the five sisters from Vietnam who are staying at the Mount. “It’s another way that God shows us we are all the same, we are all his children,” she said. Sister Marie William enjoys having the chance to pray with the other Ursuline Sisters, especially when she sees a sister in need. “Praying with the sisters is very uplifting,” she said. “Jesus said, ‘For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.’” Friends can write to Sister Marie William at 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356.n

Several Ursuline Sisters were present when Brescia University in Owensboro, Ky., dedicated its renovated Moore Center for students on Sept. 8. Sister Ruth Gehres was recognized for getting the student center built when she was Brescia’s president in 1988. Sister Sharon Sullivan was recognized for her help with the building’s master plan. Congregational Leader Sister Amelia Stenger held the ribbon with President Father Larry Hostetter.

Pilgrims on the Journey... This feature offers a sister the opportunity to share the inspiration in her ministry as she helps others encounter Christ’s presence.Featured is Sister Mary Ellen Backes, who serves as pastoral associate at St. Joseph Church in Springfield, Ill. One of the things I do that helps bring Jesus to life at St. Joseph Church is to facilitate the study and reflection of scripture. Over the years I have used adult lifelong learning tools, such as Luke Timothy Johnson’s series on “Jesus and the Gospels” and Amy-Jill Levine’s study on “The Old Testament” and “Little Rock Scripture Studies.” Within each synoptic Gospel we view how Jesus is uniquely alive, and then invite ourselves to connect the Jesus alive in the context of our daily lives. In Mark, the drama of discipleship unfolds, and Jesus is a Mystery to behold rather than a teacher. “How do I see the Mystery of Jesus present in the drama of my life?” Matthew’s Jesus connects with what is foretold Sister Mary Ellen Backes, left, leads a in Jewish tradition. “How do I connect my faith as passed on and rooted?” scripture discussion with Kathy and Jim Jesus, in Luke’s Gospel, is prophet. “How do I speak the truth of my faith?” Joyce at St. Joseph Catholic Church in John’s Jesus is Risen, the Logos, or Word, that feeds and transforms us into Springfield, Ill. the living body of Christ. With each Mass we are sent as intentional disciples carrying within ourselves Jesus, to be of service to a world hungry for identity and meaning. I keep this awareness alive every day through prayer and service!

Associate creates planned gift to partner with Sisters

Karen Siciliano, left, Sister Mary Ellen Backes, and the late Larry Devocelle

Karen Siciliano arrived at Mount Saint Joseph for the first time on a Sunday night in August 2004. She, Ursuline Sister Mary Ellen Backes and Larry Devocelle came together from Springfield, Ill., for their interviews to join the first class of the Spiritual Direction Training Program. “We were scared to death,” she said, but that was outweighed by the positive feelings of Maple Mount. “The pull there for me was energetic the minute I got out of the car,” she said. “We took in the beauty of the space. I felt something pulling me. Even though I don’t get there 14

often, the Mount is true north for me. It’s my eternal home. I’m my best self, my truest self, when I’m there.” Even the street signs in front of the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center spoke to Karen. “The streets are called St. Michael Avenue and St. Joseph Avenue,” she said. “My father’s name was Michael Joseph.” Her father died six months before her trip to Maple Mount. Karen and Sister Mary Ellen are friends who minister together at St. Joseph Parish in Springfield. It was Sister Mary Ellen who suggested Karen come to Mount Saint Joseph. “I think initially, I fell in love with the community,” Karen said. “Spiritual direction training was a life-changing moment for me. It was helpful in my ministry in the church, but also in my everyday work experience. I’m a human resources manager. When people come to me, I think of what I learned in spiritual direction training – ‘Lean into God. Take a long, loving look at the real.’” She uses the lessons she learned from the Ursuline Sisters daily in working with people in Springfield, she said. “People here are receiving the

blessing of the Ursuline Sisters. That’s kind of cool.” Karen, 65, considered becoming an Ursuline Sister, then decided to make a commitment as an Ursuline Associate in 2008. But she also decided to make a tangible investment with the sisters, creating a planned gift that leaves a percentage of her estate to the sisters. “It’s more than just caring for the sisters,” she said. “I’m 280 miles away. I can’t be a part of the everyday workings of the community. But I can companion them in the mission in dedicating part of my estate to perhaps help them carry on. “I think the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph are a prophetic voice in our Church and our world,” she said. “I see the Holy Spirit pulling more from the Ursuline Sisters. There’s an evolution in process, and I want to be a part of that. I want to assure that the sisters who have given their lives for us are taken care of.” Karen is attempting to establish a personal foundation to help some local charities. “When you don’t have kids, you want to leave a legacy,” she said. She was inspired by a quote from Saint Basil of Caesarea, which says: “Fling wide your doors; give your wealth free passage everywhere! As a great river flows by a thousand channels through fertile country, so let your wealth run through many conduits to the homes of the poor. Wells that are drawn from flow the better; left unused, they go foul.… Money kept standing idle is worthless; but moving and changing hands it benefits the community and brings increase.” If you want to consider creating a legacy by making a planned gift to the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, contact Betsy Jo Mullins, director of Development, at betsy.mullins@maplemount.org, or (270) 229-2008.

Martha and Mary are the topic of Women’s Retreat

Ursuline Book of Prayer, Volume II, now available

Sister Cheryl Clemons brings her always popular women’s retreat to the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center on March 1618, 2018, discussing “Essential Questions: What Martha and Mary Can Teach Us.” Stories about Mary and Martha of Bethany are found in both Luke’s and John’s Gospels. Most discussions of these two Gospel women focus on the frazzled worker Martha compared to her quiet, prayerful sister Mary. During this retreat weekend, women participants will be invited to consider these stories from a different approach: What life questions still relevant to us today do these two women evoke, and what answers might they suggest? The retreatants will be invited to reflect on the following: • How do we center our lives on Jesus? • How do we care healthily for family? • What is the role of friendship in our lives? • How do we prepare for and face loss and/or death? During brief presentations that peel back the layers of the Gospel stories, times of quiet reflection, group sharing and the celebration of the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist, retreatants will explore the links between Mary and Martha and their own lives. For more information and to register, contact Kathy McCarty, 270-229-0206 or kathy.mccarty@ maplemount.org. A flyer can be found at ursulinesmsj. org under Conference & Retreat Center.
