Sister Mary Sheila takes over as coordinator of formation

Ursuline Associates will have a new sister to help guide them on their journey with Saint Angela this fall, when Sister Mary Sheila Higdon takes over as coordinator of formation for Ursuline Partnerships. Sister Mary Sheila is a native of Owensboro, Ky., but in her 63 years as an Ursuline Sister, this is only her second ministry in her native county, having served in Whitesville from 1990-93. “I’m looking forward to it,” she said, although she concedes she won’t know all the ins and outs of the position until she has been in the ministry for awhile. Sister Mary Sheila will assist associates and alumnae of Mount Saint Joseph Academy in their ongoing formation and spirituality opportunities. She replaces Sister Marietta Wethington, who is concentrating on her ministries with the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center and pastoral care for the sisters in Saint Joseph Villa. 2011-12 formation plans focus on peacemaking and reconciliation

Following the inspirational Associates and Sisters Day, Ursuline Associate groups will spend more time this coming year reflecting on the theme, “Angela, Peacemaker and Reconciler.” The first formation experience associates and sisters will participate in when next they meet is titled, “Reconciliation, Peacemaking, Environmentalism.” It follows the spirit of Sister Michele Morek’s presentation during Associates and Sisters Day, and in fact Sister Michele helped fashion the formation material with assistance from Associate Martha Little, a member of the Associate Advisory Board. The session will focus on asking associates about their relationship with nature and the environment, and what Saint Angelamightsaynowaboutenvironmentalissueswe’redealing with today. The session concludes with an examination of where each of our great works lie. The second session, which will be discussed this fall, follows Sister Jacinta Powers’ presentation from Associates and Sisters Day, “What the Poor Teach us About Living as Christians.” Sister Marietta Wethington created this session, based on Sister Jacinta’s outline. This experience will seek a response to questions such as “What is competing with me to prevent me from embracing the poor?” and “What can I do to recognize the systems that keep the poor where they are, and what can I do to change them?” Associates will examine how they greet the less fortunate on their personal journeys, and how they can be“salt and light”to all those they meet. Formation experiences for winter and spring will be completed this fall. The format for these formation experiences will be the same as those used for “change” in the past year.

Sister MARY SHEILA

from page 2

Sister Mary Sheila was a teacher, director, or principal for 30 years at schools in Kentucky, Missouri, and Nebraska, and has served in diocesan or parish ministry since 1980 in those same three states. From 1999 until this summer, she served as pastoral associate at three parishes in the heart of the Ozarks in southeastern Missouri – St. George in Van Buren, St. Catherine Siena in Piedmont, and Our Lady of Sorrows in Williamsville. She has some experience in working with associates while ministering in Bowling Green, Ky., in the late 1980s, and also while serving in Dexter, Mo., in the late 1990s. Her office will be in St. Angela Hall. To contact Sister Mary Sheila, email her at mary.higdon@maplemount.org.

ANGELA

from front

Associate Lisa Reilly, from Paola, Kan., gave an excellent presentation on a fairly new concept called Y-DOSA (Young Daughters of Saint Angela). These are girls ranging in age from 11 to 18 who gather together to study the teachings of Saint Angela and incorporate those lessons into their daily lives. These girls have made tremendous strides over the past year in getting this program off the ground in Paola. A small Y-DOSA group has also formed in Whitesville, Ky., under the direction of Sister Suzanne Sims. Lisa and Paola Associate Carol O’Keefe are available to help other communities start their own YDOSA chapter. For the second year, a presentation titled “In Memoriam” offered an extremely moving and poignant remembrance honoring the associates and sisters who have gone on to God since we gathered last year. There was not a dry eye in the room. And last, but certainly not least, the group said its goodbyes and heartfelt thanks to Sister Marietta Wethington, as she leaves her ministry as director of formation for Ursuline Partnerships. She moves on to new challenges while continuing to focus on her two other ministries, adjunct to Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center and pastoral care for the senior sisters in the infirmary. Sister Mary Sheila Higdon will assume the responsibilities for associate formation this fall. The day concluded with a wonderfully moving and spiritual gathering for Mass celebrated by Associate Father John Vaughan, and including the associate commitment ceremony. For those who were able to attend, it truly was a “Perfect Day.” Please mark your calendars to be part of Associate and Sisters Day 2012 on June 9, 2012. n

Y-DOSA members in Kansas hold pinning ceremony The Young Daughters of Saint Angela is a group for girls ages 11-18, who study Saint Angela’s life and seek her guidance. There are two chapters of Y-DOSA: Kansas City, Kan., metro area and St. Mary of the Woods Catholic School in Whitesville, Ky. By Izabella Borowiak-Miller, Y-DOSA member (Kansas)

Recently in Y-DOSA we went on a spiritual retreat. Mrs. Carol O’Keefe was kind enough to hold the retreat at her house. At our last meeting we learned all about Saint Angela. Saint Angela Merici was born in 1474 at Desenzano on the shore of Lake Garda, Italy. Saint Angela became a tertiary of Saint Francis at about 20 years old. She and her religious friends founded the Ursulines in Brescia. She preferred to send her followers to minister in their own families, through this she hoped to effect an improvement in social conditions. Saint Angela’s belief was “disorder in society is the result of disorder in the family.” As a patron, Saint Angela chose Saint Ursula because ever since her martyrdom, Saint Ursula was regarded as the ideal type of Christian virgin. On July 9th, Y-DOSA members Cindy, Amelia, Kate and I received pins as full members of Y-DOSA. Saint Angela Merici has done great things for our religion. She has had such a wonderful life that I think we should follow in any way we can. To start a Y-DOSA chapter in your community, contact Marian Bennett, (270) 229-2006, marian.bennett@maplemount.org.

Food pantry serves needs of body and soul By Judy Sims, OSUA

The St. Joseph’s Food Pantry in Central City, Ky., was started on Dec. 19, 1984. Originally it was known as Catholic Services for the Needy. Associates Marcia Stoller, It began as a very small left, and Judy Sims stop for a group of volunteers moment at the St. Joseph’s food working out of a garage. pantry in Central City, Ky. They would collect donations from various local businesses and individuals and distribute to needy families once a week. The operation soon moved to the undercroft at St. Joseph’s Church. The volunteers were able to get food from an organization called Second Harvest in Elizabethtown, Ky. (The name has now been changed to Feeding America.) Of course, they had to drive there (83 miles each way) to pick it up and then pack it for

distribution. I am not sure when the original name was dropped in favor of St. Joseph’s Food Pantry. It originally served 15-20 families per week. As the organization expanded it was not feasible to distribute food every week. It is now done once per month, and we average 130-140 families per month. In the past we have had as many as 200 families receive food. My husband Ric and I have been involved with the pantry for nearly 10 years. The last six years Ric has been in charge of ordering the food and produce. We are blessed to have so many wonderful volunteers and community service workers to assist us. It is a two-day operation. We pack everything on one day, which normally takes from four to eight hours. The following morning it is distributed from 8:30 to 10:30. Sometimes people begin lining up outside our doors as early as 5 a.m. Ric and I and all the volunteers are glad to be able to perform this valuable service to the needy of Muhlenberg County, Ky.

Associate Update

In Loving Memory... JOHN P. HANCOCK, Union County, Ky., associate, died May 11 at age 89. A native of Waverly, Ky., John worked the 252-acre family farm until 1989, when he and his wife, Ann (also an Ursuline Associate), retired to Huntsville, Ala., to be near their family. John and Ann were lifelong sweethearts. During their 62-year marriage, Ann and John enjoyed the accomplishments of their children and grandchildren and were eager to try new things. After relocating to Huntsville, they took up ballroom dancing as a hobby, becoming proficient enough to be a special attraction at a local dance recital. Ann preceded John in death in February 2007. Other survivors include their five children, Kelly, John, Frank, Tom, and Donna. Still together, John is buried beside Ann in Saint Peter’s Cemetery in Waverly. They made their associate lifetime commitments in 1991 at the invitation of their contact sisters, Sisters Jane Irvin and Jane Miriam Hancock, OSU. Sister Mary Evelyn Duvall, 88, died April 26 in her 70th year of religious life. A native of Sunfish, Ky., she loved to travel and was an excellent cook, seamstress, and craft maker. Sister Mary Evelyn taught for 44 years in Kentucky, Missouri, and primarily New Mexico. Survivors include four sisters, Catherine Duvall and Martha Durbin, both of Sunfish, Mary Davis, Leitchfield, Ky., and Frances Heath, Mountain Home, Idaho; two brothers, Lawrence Duvall of Louisville, and William Pius Duvall, Brownsville, Ky. Sister Marita Greenwell, 85, died June 21, in her 65th year of religious life. A native of Rhodelia, Ky., in Meade County, she was co-director of the Ursuline Associate program from 1996-2002. Sister Marita was a music teacher, and she directed the Contemporary Woman Program at Brescia College/University, a revolutionary self-esteem building program, for 32 years (1973-2005). She taught in Owensboro, Paducah, and at Mount Saint Joseph Academy and Brescia College as well as in the Archdiocese of Louisville and in Missouri. Survivors include her sister, Dorothy Hughes of Elizabethtown. NOTE: Gifts in memory of a sister may take the form of donations to the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356.

Saint Angela Merici

Dear Associates, The next few weeks are going to be very busy for all of us here at the Mount. We are preparing for the 41st Annual Picnic on Sept. 11 to support our Retired Sisters. We do hope many of you will be able to come. The day is a wonderful way to see so many of our friends and relatives. Many of you are working in a booth or helping in some other way. For all you do to help us, thank you. If you live at a distance and cannot attend the picnic, please go to our website to see how you can support our Retired Sisters. Our quilt club raffle is going very well, but every ticket helps us get closer to our goal. The main raffle is filled with great prizes and that is another way you can take part in the care of the Sisters. Your help is greatly appreciated. God bless all of you. We hope to see you soon. Pray for us. We pray for you.
