Associates and Sisters Day opened Doors of Mercy

By Associates Marilyn Katzer and Mary Ann Stewart

A

ssociates and Sisters Day fulfilled its promise to “Open Doors of Mercy” as a large and enthusiastic crowd of sisters and associates gathered in the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center on June 11. As we traveled from our Kansas homes, we looked forward to hearing the speakers, visiting the sisters and getting to know the other associates. A special bonus for us was the chance to reconnect with the former Ursuline Sisters of Paola who now live at Mount Saint Joseph. Sometimes daily life can be full of fears, doubts or resentments. Our hope for the day was to find motivation in times of reluctance to take on the responsibilities of caring about others or situations. Lisa Gulino, our speaker, is assistant professor of theology and area coordinator for pastoral ministry at Brescia University. All of us gave her high marks for her insightful and enthusiastic presentation of “Opening Doors of Mercy.”

Associates and Sisters Day included several processions, such as these four candle bearers who brought light to each of the tables. Pictured, left to right: Associates Ed Cecil, Jean Simpson, Joan Perry and Phyllis Troutman.

Lisa divided the day into three vignettes, “A Mercy that Reaches Deep Within,” “A Mercy that Goes Forth,” and “Mercy in the Life of Saint Angela and the Ursuline Vocation of Sisters and Associates.” As she continued with her presentation and the group exercises, our feelings and misgivings began to melt away.

Associates Marilyn Katzer, left, and Mary Ann Stewart, both from Kansas, present the offertory gifts to Father Joe Mills during the Associates and Sisters Day liturgy on June 11 at the Mount Saint Joseph Motherhouse Chapel.

In summing up the idea of mercy, Lisa said, “Mercy is without borders and wishes to seep into every crack and crevice of our life, our hurts, our joys, our very being as well as relationship with our world, our society and one another.” She challenged us with the words of Robert Mann: “Plan, plot and scheme random acts of kindness. Incite it, invite it, ignite it, shake this world to its very foundations with kindness and enjoy yourself in the process!” Associate panelists Gloria Cecil, Betty Girten, Tammy Milbourn and Sara Scully shared times in their lives when they experienced acts of mercy. Listening to the panel, we realized if it weren’t for acts of mercy, we wouldn’t be who we are. Mercy empowers us to do for others and know that Life is a gift from God. We welcomed 11 new associates to our Mount Saint Joseph family. When new associate Doreen Abbott was asked if her first Associates and Sisters Day was what she expected, she responded enthusiastically, “It was even better!” Angela’s spirit and Pope Francis’ words filled the entire day. Being at Maple Mount with the staff, sisters, and associates, we knew that God is present and has blessed each and every one of us individually. At the end of this day of prayer, song and friendship, we were convinced this was what being an associate was really about. We realized how much the Associates and Sisters Day means to us. It gives us strength to focus and carry on with our daily routines and expectations in life. We are committed to attending Associates and Sisters Day as long as we are able. We look forward to seeing everyone next year.n

A Note from Marian...

Dear Associate Sisters and Brothers, My favorite image of Saint Angela depicts her striding confidently on a dusty road. The Italian landscape lies far below her path. We see a vibrant woman, who trusts that God will send companions for her journey. Angela grips a walking stick in her strong left hand and a small bag is attached to the stick. Have you wondered what is in the bag? Is it her lunch – or could it be a small bit of food or a few coins for a stranger in need? She is carrying a red book. Is it the Bible? A book of saints? Or is it a journal of her thoughts for a company of women to be formed in her distant future? Her eyes are fixed on a far off goal. Does she see us? Does she see Ursuline Sisters and Associates gathered at Mount Saint Joseph? Just a few weeks ago, we welcomed new members to our Ursuline family of sisters and associates. After weeks of study and prayer, they stood before us to make their commitments. It was an exciting day of beginnings. We answered with our renewed commitments and pledged ourselves to carry on the work begun by Angela Merici so long ago. Let us entrust our new family members to her, our mother and guide. In the spirit of Angela,

Marian Bennett, OSUA

From the Congregational Leader... Dear Associates, It was so wonderful to see all of you at Associates and Sisters Day in June. Each time we come together we get to know each other better. It gives us an opportunity to pray together and welcome those new associates who have chosen to be a part of the Ursuline Sisters’ mission. I can’t help but think that Saint Angela was looking down on us with a smile. When God called her to form our Ursuline community, she did it with love and concern for others. As Sisters and Associates we are called to do the same in our time. There is still so much to do. Our society is pleading for peace and a return to concern and care for our neighbor. Through our mission of education and Christian formation we have served in so many capacities and so many places. We continue to serve as we are called and you, as associates, are a part of that call as you pray for us and help us along the way. We are truly blessed. As I move into the new position of congregational leader, I ask your prayers and assure you that you will be remembered in mine each day. God bless you and those you love.

Janet Weidenbenner Kuper is still an educator By Suzanne Gochenouer, OSUA

There was no question Janet Weidenbenner Kuper (pictured at right) would spend her life caring for the children of her community. A cradle Catholic, she heard from an early age that living God’s truth meant serving people. When she received an invitation to “teach” her first-grade class at St. Teresa School, her thoughts turned to that career. Born in Glennonville, Mo., Janet was the oldest of Lucille and Cletus Weidenbenner’s seven children. For this great-great niece of Glennonville founder Father Frederick Peters, growing up meant full participation in church, school and community activities. While attending Brescia College (now University) on a scholarship, Janet began dating Steve Kuper. The couple married 36 years ago and were blessed with four children, now adult, and one grandson. First as a teacher, and later principal, Janet served the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese for 35 years. Since her retirement, she takes care of her grandson twice a week, travels, works on projects with Steve, makes quilts and still finds time to substitute teach. She also spends more time in reflection and prayer for others, something she considers a vital act of faith for the community. “Even when life gets us down, or we are too busy to stop during the day, God is there with us—guiding us—loving us,” Janet said. Working with the Ursuline staff at the St. Teresa and Sacred Heart schools continued her immersion

in the “spirit of Angela” that ran from her grade school to college years. She credits not only her teachers but Sisters Mary Celine Weidenbenner and Diane Marie Payne, both family members. Then Sister Carol Shively issued an invitation to join the Ursuline Associates. Janet saw this as a new opportunity to deepen her Ursuline spirit. Angela Merici’s love of Jesus and education inspired her to accept. Angela’s directive, “Let your first refuge be at the feet of Jesus” informed the way Janet seeks to live her faith. Janet also finds strength in Angela’s call to welcome others into our homes and lives. “I hope all I do is a reflection of my faith and love for Jesus! Because Angela loved Jesus, His spirit and love were alive in her thoughts and words,” Janet said. Faith is not about just going to church for Janet—it is an integral part of life. Continuing her faith journey, Janet serves as a Eucharistic minister, supports her husband (music minister), and works on church and school projects for their parish. Together, they help at a senior center in Campbell, Mo. She wants her legacy to be the memory of the joy she lived in knowing and serving Jesus. If it were in her power to change the world, Janet knows she would “awaken the world to the joy of knowing Jesus and His plan for our lives! I would let them know that heaven is for them—it is real. If we believe that, the world is a different place.”

What Clothes are you Wearing?

Clothes and fashion seem to be a high value in today’s society. Clothes are important to most of us. We want to look nice. Sometimes first impressions are based on our appearance. Anyone who is serious about seeking a job will be careful to wear proper attire. There are even counseling services that advise people how to dress for a job interview. Chapter Two of Saint Angela’s Rule is on dress. She tells her followers, “Let it also be recalled that their clothes and manner of wearing them should be modest and simple, as truly befits virginal modesty.” Angela seems to be telling her followers that clothes make an honest statement about who they profess to be. Here we may want to pause and reflect: What do the clothes I wear say about who I am? Scripture, too, has something to say about how to clothe our self, not bodily, but interiorly. In chapter three of the Letter to the Colossians we read: “Because you are God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with heartfelt mercy, with kindness, humility, meekness and patience, bear with one another, forgive whatever grievance you have against one another.”

WELCOME

Then we are told that all these virtues should be covered with love which will hold them together and make them perfect. Each night before I go to bed I carefully choose the clothes I wear because I do like to look nice and to be appropriately dressed for the day. Each morning as I get dressed I try to remember the words of Saint Paul to the people in the Church at Colossae because I believe that it is even more important to be dressed nicely on the inside than on the outside. Yes, clothes are important, especially those we wear interiorly.

Reflection:

 Which of the virtues mentioned in the Letter to the Colossians do you wear naturally?  Which of the virtues are harder for you to wear?  How can you be more aware each day of the way you clothe yourself interiorly?  How can you strengthen the virtues you think are your weaker ones?

Sherry Newton is assistant director of finance for Mount Saint Joseph as well as choir director and religious education teacher at her parish, St. Bernard in Rockport, Ind. In addition, she is completing studies for her bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance. With a bright smile and infectious laugh, Sherry is generous with her time and talent, always responding with kindness and graciousness. Sister Pat Rhoten is her contact companion. Martha Warren, a lifetime educator, had retired briefly from teaching in the public school system, but soon felt the call to leadership at Mary Carrico Catholic School in Knottsville, Ky. As principal she exhibits concern for the child and knowledge about how to move a school forward. Described as a faith-filled woman who is efficient and committed in whatever she does, Martha’s favorite pastime is spending time with her family of five children and eight grandchildren. She serves Saint Alphonsus Parish in many ways as lector, Eucharistic minister, parish council member or wherever the need arises. Sister Suzanne Sims is her contact companion.

New formation sessions will focus on the Beatitudes

The ongoing formation sessions for Ursuline Associates in the coming year will expound on the theme of Associates and Sisters Day, “Opening the Doors of Mercy,” by using the Beatitudes. The lessons Jesus taught in the Gospel of Matthew 5:312, are a foundation for how each of us are called to serve and to show mercy. An additional resource will be, “The Name of God is Mercy,” a 2016 book based on an interview of Pope Francis by Andrea Tornielli, a veteran Vatican reporter who wrote the first biography on the pope. The book was one of the resources used by Lisa M. Gulino, the keynote speaker for Associates and Sisters Day, and she recommended it for use in the formation sessions. Each of the four sessions will deal with two of the Beatitudes, as well as other resources. The first session will focus on, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven,” and “Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Members of the Associate Advisory Board will prepare each session. The first will be available to associate groups meeting in August.
