Ursuline Sister Martha Buser to lead Associates Day discussion By Dan Heckel, OSUA
rsuline Sister of Louisville Martha Buser – an author, international speaker and retreat leader – will be the main speaker at Associates and Sisters Day on June 27, 2020. As associate groups continue their discussions this year of “returning to our roots,” the Associate Advisory Board recommended the topic for Associates and Sisters Day be “Charism isn’t Taught – it’s Caught.” Discussion will center on the Ursuline charism: once it’s caught, where will it lead us? Who should lead such a discussion was answered during the Ursuline Convocation of 2019, when Sister Martha Buser told Mount Saint Joseph Sister Cecelia Joseph Olinger that she wanted to talk to the Associates from Mount Saint Joseph. Sister Martha’s credentials are unparalleled. A native of Louisville, she was taught by Ursuline Sisters before joining the community. She taught grade school for seven years and high school for 13. In 1972 she became her community’s novice director and went back to study Saint Angela Merici’s teachings. That experience led her to
“Angela’s first company was all lay people,” Sister Martha said. “It was meant for lay people. My experience with associates is that they understand Angela’s charism quickly.” She uses her books to share with associates how Angela teaches us to live a Christian life. “When I talk to associates, I always begin with what Angela taught us about a relationship with God, with self, with others and with creation,” Sister Martha said. “Essentially, Angela told us how to live our lives. I think people are looking for clarity on how to live a Christian life. Angela showed us what a good Christian life is like. Her emphasis was always on love.” The word “charism” can tend to confuse lay people, but Sister Martha defines it as “a gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church. It gets interpreted by how people relate their own experiences.” In the Ursuline community, she said, the charism is “the contemplative love for God that results in the openness and eagerness to serve the needs of others.” She believes that “charism is caught, not taught,” and equates it

begin talking about Saint Angela to other Ursuline communities. In 1980 she led an institute in Brescia, Italy, about Saint Angela and Ursuline Spirituality. She has given talks in every Ursuline motherhouse in North America. She is the author of two popular books concerning Saint Angela, “Also in Your Midst” and “Lover of Us All.” She earned her

These days she serves as a spiritual director and directs associate formation in Louisville. Talking to associates about Saint Angela is one of Sister Martha’s passions.

From the Associate Office...
Dear Associate Sisters and Brothers, Wow, I can’t believe a year has already passed. It feels like just yesterday I started working here at Mount Saint Joseph as the coordinator for Ursuline Partnerships. So many exciting things have happened over the past year, and I’ve met so many wonderful people along the way. I am truly blessed. As we move into the new year, let’s continue to reflect on why we became associates and what we can do to further our commitment as associates for our Ursuline Sisters as followers of Angela Merici. I am excited to announce that Sister Martha Buser, author of “Also in Your Midst” and “Lover of Us All,” will be our guest speaker at this year’s Associates and Sisters Day on Saturday, June 27. Her topic for the day will be “Charism isn’t Taught – it’s Caught” and “What can we do with it once we catch it?” Upon reviewing the evaluations from last year’s Associates and Sisters Day, we have decided to continue having the Mass and new associate commitment ceremony separate, based on the majority of the responses. The commitment ceremony will be earlier in the afternoon, and Mass will be at 4 p.m. for those who want to participate. We have also decided to omit the associate panel this year to allow for more social time to visit with the Ursuline Sisters or perhaps stop in the Gift Shop. If there is something you would like to do in place of the panel, we welcome your ideas for this year or for ASSOCIATE UPDATE is published four times a year for the Associates of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356-9999 Phone: 270-229-2006 • Fax: 270-229-4953 Website: ursulinesmsj.org Email: associates.msj@maplemount.org Coordinator of Ursuline Partnerships: Doreen Abbott, OSUA Director of Mission Advancement/Communications: Dan Heckel, OSUA Communications Specialist/Graphic Design: Jennifer Kaminski, OSUA Director of Development: Carol Braden-Clarke Communications and Development Specialist: Maggie Hatfield Mission Advancement Assistant: Sister Mary McDermott, OSU Mission Advancement Assistant: Sister Marcella Schrant, OSU
ASSOCIATE MISSION STATEMENT
W
e, the associates of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, proclaim the Gospel of Jesus through the actions of our everyday lives. We commit ourselves to living the charism of Saint Angela Merici in union with and in support of the Ursuline community of Mount Saint Joseph.
Dear Associates, We hope your Christmas holidays were filled with happiness. Now we have a period of ordinary time before we begin Lent in February. We are always looking forward to the next season of our Liturgical year. During all these seasons we pray for you and your families. We ask you to pray for us, too. God bless each of you as you try to live out the call of Saint Angela to stay close to Jesus. May you have a blessed New Year.

future Associates and Sisters Days. This is the time when we need to begin looking at the people around us who we feel might be longing for spiritual uplifting. Take this opportunity to invite them to an associate meeting. Maybe they will be interested in becoming Ursuline Associates. I welcome all of you to join me in keeping the Spirit of Angela Merici alive and to share with others her wisdom and forethought of changing with the times. She will forever be in our midst.

to the charism present in each family. “No one teaches you how to be in the family,” Sister Martha said. “Your parents model their behavior and your family charism is caught through your experiences.” The charism that Saint Angela shared still offers a very clear way of life today, Sister Martha said. “In her words to the Colonelle – the leaders – Angela told them how they are to relate to other people, how to relate to God and to take care of others,” Sister Martha said. “She never gave them a ministry.” The schedule for Associates and Sisters Day will be available in the May issue of Associate Update.n

Reminder from Saint Basil the Great
By Sister Marietta Wethington, OSU
As I was musing what to write about for this newsletter, I recalled the words of Saint Basil the Great. Saint Basil tells us the unused coat in our closet belongs to another and the extra shoes in our closet belong to one who has no shoes. That sent me scampering to my closet. Why? Because I knew I had both. Actually, I had two extra coats. I took them both out, made sure they were clean, and prepared to send them to a friend of mine who volunteers at a women’s homeless shelter. The shoes and a couple of extra pairs of bedroom slippers will go there as well. I tend to clutter and save too much. Again, Saint Basil tells us there is time for change. As we approach Lent, this seems to be a good time to strip away some of the things we don’t really need. The advice of Saint Basil teaches us to value the things that really matter: spirituality, contemplation, friendship and kindness are a few examples. Reflection: What are some of the values you would like to add? Perhaps you would like to list them in a journal and reflect on a different value each day.n

It's another way for Joanne to serve By Associate Renee Schultz of Prairie Village, Kan.
From an early age Joanne Thompson felt a strong calling to serve others, especially the young. She volunteered as a catechist as young as 19, teaching kindergarten. Throughout her life she has always found a way to use her gifts to serve the everchanging needs around her. Although she had not been introduced to the Ursulines until later in her life, Joanne was a natural born daughter of Angela. She has worked hard to listen to where there is a need and has woven her ministries throughout her mothering, church life, volunteering and corporate work life. Joanne lives in Paola, Kan., and is involved with the Kansas City area associate group. Her willingness to serve when needed is what first brought her to meet the Ursulines. While working on the Archdiocesan Renew 2000 campaign, she met Sister Marie William Blyth, ministering at Queen of the Holy Rosary in Wea, Kan. The next year Sister Raymond Dieckman and Sister Lucille Sterbenz were in her Renew 2000 prayer group in Paola. After Joanne expressed that she had a “restless flame” in her heart, Sister Raymond invited her to join the Ursuline Associates. “I realized I found my place in the world where I could express the fire going on in my heart and knew that I could minister to God’s people all over the world, not just a single parish,” Joanne said. “Since then, I have taken all my ministerial commitments to heart as part of my promise to the Ursuline Sisters in carrying out the charisms of Jesus and Angela.”
Throughout the years, she has continued to serve in numerous ministries such as parish religious education director, catechist, choir member, cantor, lector, eucharistic minister, and sharing her time and talents with the Ursuline Associates and Joanne Thompson Sisters as needed. One project that was rewarding but hard work was designing and making a Saint Angela chaplet commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph becoming an independent community. She celebrated 42 years of marriage to her husband Gary this year; they have five children and nine grandchildren. They celebrated their 40th anniversary on a pilgrimage with Ursuline Sisters and Associates in 2018. “It deepened my relationship in my marriage as well as my relationship with Ursuline Sisters and Associates,” Joanne said. “I think God led me to my husband and to the Ursuline Sisters to be an important part of my life. It was how He wanted me to know love and happiness.” Being involved in so many ministries comes with its challenges, but Joanne says, “Sometimes it is a juggling act to make time for all the important people in my life – family, friends, work, church and the Ursuline family. I do the best I can, sharing the love that I can, always trying to demonstrate Christ’s mercy, forgiveness, kindness and hospitality to all those I meet in the Ursuline way.”
Greetings from Development
T
he new year gives us the chance to look back with gratitude and to look ahead to what 2020 might bring. We began two initiatives in 2019 in Development with the Kindness Campaign and Escape to the Mount Weekend. We are grateful for the support for both initiatives from many associates who volunteered their time to help. A special “thank you” to Associates Violet Hamilton and Jody Ziegler who have faithfully come to the Mount each month to prepare the Kindness Campaign mailing. The Kindness Campaign spreads kindness through a monthly card to someone in need of encouragement, kind words or just knowing that someone cares about them. More than 150 people in 31 states have benefitted from these cards. We have received wonderful feedback about how these cards are lifting people’s spirits. Information will be coming out in March about how you can help us spread kindness to those in need. Over 200 people enjoyed the Escape to the Mount Weekend over the two-day event. In our followup survey to participants there was overwhelming support to make this an annual event. Escape to the Mount Weekend 2020 will be Sept. 12 and 13. Mark your calendars and join us for Trivia and Quilt Bingo. Thank you for your support and commitment to our mission. We look forward to the possibilities of what the new year may bring.
