What’s to come in spring sessions on change?

By Judy Gray, OSUA in Memphis, Tenn.

ASSOCIATES DAY 2010: Left: Ellese Hay (guest), left, of Henderson, Ky., and Sister Alfreda Malone. Above: Associate Laurine Scott of Mascoutah, Ill., and Sister Dorothy Helbling. Right: Associates Stephanie Render of Caneyville, Ky., and Carol Hill of Leitchfield, Ky.

“I wanted to change my answer on that last handout, but then I was afraid to!” This comment from one Ursuline Associate during a Fall 2010 session on Change brought about a rousing, and very empathetic round of laughter. The handout in question was focused on identifying our level of freedom regarding change. We all knew exactly how she felt! How many times, in various settings, have we been asked to complete a survey which asked for our first and most honest response, only to find that we wanted to question once again, or maybe even a third time before finalizing our answer? The two Fall 2010 sessions on Change prompted many sisters and associates to prayerfully reflect on our openness to the Spirit regarding change. At times change is inevitable, and not of our own choosing. Such change can open us to the grace of surrender. It can put us in touch with our own desperate need for God in every aspect of our lives. Other changes are prompted from within, from that sacred space where we listen to God and come to understand that a change is needed – either interiorly or exteriorly – in order to live more fully with God at the center of our lives. Our Fall 2010 sessions helped us to look at the Spirituality

of Change, and at Principles of Change from the Experience of Saint Angela. We used these wonderful opportunities to learn from each others’ rich experience of change in their unique life settings. So, what is to come in the next two sessions? During the Lenten Season 2011, our topic will be Change in Ourselves. This session will help us to focus on personal change. With the help of handouts to serve as guides, together we will explore obstacles to change; resistance to what is new; negative emotions related to change; ways to move past the negative; and positive ways to deal with personal change. The topic of Session IV, which will take place during the Easter Season 2011, is Embracing Change and Transformation. In this session, we come to the culmination of all four sessions – How can we better be the persons, the community, the family, the Body of Christ that God invites us to be? This session will have its basis in New Testament texts related to change and transformation, giving participants an opportunity to reflect on transformation as a life-long journey. Change – exciting to some; frightening to others; a combination of both to many. What a powerful tool to compel us to spend time in Angela’s favorite place, at the feet of Jesus.

Associates and Sisters Day is Saturday, June 11th Please register by May 20th

February 2011

Letter from the director... Dear Associate Sisters and Brothers, My mother always said, “Every day is a good day,”especially when my brothers and I complained about long, gloomy days of Minnesota snow. In the darkness of winter, it’s a special gift to know – for certain – that days will be warm again, that the sun will shine again. As we await that warm sun, let’s make good use of our new year. Now is a good time to look back and reflect on why we became Ursuline Associates. Now would be a good time to thank the person who invited us and guided us in our journey. Now is a good time to say thank you. I extend a hand of gratitude to members of the Associate Advisory Board and to our Area Group Coordinators. They devote many hours and accomplish a great deal for all of us to enhance our associate experience. A new year is also a time to grow and bloom in new directions. For those of you who are unable to meet regularly with other associates, take heart! Watch your mailbox for new opportunities to be connected. I hope you’ve reserved Saturday, June 11 to spend the day with us here at Mount Saint Joseph for Associates and Sisters Day. It’s our annual family reunion, our chance to glory in our relationship with Angela, Mount Saint Joseph and with each other, to be reminded of the great gifts we receive. Until then, I wish you peace and blessings, Mrs. Marian Bennett, OSUA, Director of Ursuline Partnerships ASSOCIATE Update is published four times a year for the Associates of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356-9999 Phone: 270-229-2006 • Fax: 270-229-4953 Website: www.ursulinesmsj.org E-mail: associates.msj@maplemount.org Director of Ursuline Partnerships: Mrs. Marian Bennett, OSUA Director of Spiritual Formation for Ursuline Partnerships: Sister Marietta Wethington, OSU Director of Mission Advancement/Communications: Dan Heckel, OSUA Communications Specialist/Graphic Design: Jennifer Kaminski Director of Mission Effectiveness: Sister Rose Marita O’Bryan, OSU Administrative Specialist/Website: Tiffany Orth Director of Development: Sister Amelia Stenger, OSU

Distance doesn’t lessen associate experience By Mary Costello A’65, OSUA in California

I firmly believe that my journey as an Ursuline Associate began on that first day in late August of 1961 when my parents and brothers dropped my sister Phyllis (A’66) and me off at Mount Saint Joseph Academy. My father was an officer in the U.S. Army and my family had the opportunity and privilege of living in many different locations. The Mount was my third high school and I was only a sophomore. Parents are our primary educators in our Catholic faith. My parents, especially my mom, took this task to heart. We were taken to Mass every Sunday and attended Catholic schools wherever we lived, even in Panama. We also had examples through their involvement within their parishes. At the Mount, we all had the opportunity to see firsthand what it really means to be an Ursuline and follow Angela’s guidelines. There were examples everywhere we turned – our teachers, the sisters we came into contact with through our jobs (library, student shop, dining room, laundry, post office, guest house), the postulants, novices, and juniorate sisters we saw every day at Mass and throughout the grounds, the sisters who came home at various times, and all the other sisters who lived at the Mount but did not have any connection to the Academy.

Whether they were aware of their effect on us or not, they made us Ursuline Associates, for we were part of their mission if only through prayer. Going through the associate process, making the commitment, and receiving the associate pin were icing on the cake; the tangible “thing” that validated that feeling was already present. As a product of the Mount and as a result of my mom’s example, I have been active in my parish for years. Since having my family, I have been privileged to live in the same house for almost 34 years. I am no longer a nomad. I have taught religious education in two parishes to students in second grade through adulthood, encompassing sacramental preparation for reconciliation, first Communion, and confirmation. I have been a lector for years, and true to the Mount influence, I am also a member of the choir. I also work in the parish office three evenings a week. Being an associate reminds me that I am part of something bigger. Every time I wear my pin I am reminded of the mission I share. It is awesome to realize that we are all joined in prayer and that we can make a difference in our world no matter where that world is. When I began my journey to become an associate, I did worry that I would be too far away from the Ursulines to participate in their mission. I have to say that I feel very included and privileged to be a part of this awesome group!

Gratitude and the Act of Giving “We own nothing that was not first given to us.” - (I Cor. 4:7)

od has entrusted us with many abilities and special aptitudes. As good stewards of these gifts we learn ways to share them with others. This is true of artistic, musical, athletic, academic, business, monetary, and spiritual gifts. All that we have, God has given us. We need to be grateful, and then find ways to share our gifts with others. According to Melody Beattie, “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial The Muhlenberg County, Ky., Associates group met Oct. into acceptance, chaos to order, and confusion 20, 2010. Over the past 137 years, the Ursuline Sisters have touched the lives of many people and many people have touched our lives. In those early years, because of the gratitude of many people, our sisters received much of their food, their trips to the doctor, almost everything they needed. There wasn’t a lot of money, but the people shared what they had with the sisters and in turn the sisters shared their education, lives, and total commitment to their pupils. Today, we receive many letters, cards, and notes from these students and friends who are so grateful for the education they received, and the love and concern of the sisters who taught them. The Western Kentucky Associates gathered Nov. 5, 2010, in With gratitude, they send wonderful donations to support our the home of Sid Mason. As we begin this New Year, let each of us show our gratitude for all the gifts we have received by sharing them with others. Sister Sharon Sullivan, congregational leader Let’s make a special effort to share our time, talent, and treasure for the Ursuline Sisters in as many ways as we can. Father Henri Nouwen says it best, “In of Mount Saint Joseph, ministering to each other, each from the riches that he or she standing at far right, sang in the Owensboro possesses, we work together for the full coming of God’s Kingdom.” Choral Society’s 70th Let the Kingdom of God come through our act of giving. She ministered in Kansas and Missouri as a teacher for 26 years, then as a chaplain and health care worker for 18 more years before moving to Maple Mount in 2010. Sister Ann Marie was an eternal optimist, known for her great kindnesses to the elderly who she loved to serve. From 1952-89, she ministered at the Ursuline Sisters Motherhouse, first as kitchen coordinator, then laundry coordinator for 45 years. During those years she acted as a mother figure for several young girls who needed a motherly presence. She was known for her sense of humor and being forever cheerful. Survivors include nieces and good friends, and the members of her religious community.
