Join us for “Angela as Risk Taker, Open to the Spirit” e’ve learned how Saint Angela taught us to adapt to change. We’ve heard her words used to show us how to be peacemakers and reconcilers. As we prepare for Associates and Sisters Day on June 9, we will look forward to learning how our dear friend Angela calls us to be guided by the Holy Spirit to be risk-takers. “Angela as Risk-Taker, Open to the Spirit,” is the theme for this year’s special day at the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center. Response was so positive to last year’s format, we will replicate it, with two presentations in the morning, and a panel discussion after lunch. The session will be led by Sister Maureen Griner, who ministers in Memphis, Tenn., as director of the Dorothy Day House of Hospitality and director of music for the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Sister Maureen served six years on the Ursuline leadership Council (2004-2010) and it was her writing on Angela as a risk-taker that inspired this topic. “We will begin by talking about risk in general,” Sister Maureen said. “Risk is a part of all of our lives. Some risks we choose (jobs, marriage, choice of school) but others are thrust upon us by circumstances,” she said. “Even though risk normally comes with some hesitation and fear and even doubt, we have no choice. Risk is part of everyday life.” Her talk will focus on “spiritual risk-taking,” that is, “a chosen risk that rises from within and ultimately affects our relationship with God and with the world.” It was that sort of risk that was taken by: Saint Angela when she formed the Company of Saint Ursula; Ursuline Sisters of Louisville who came by The in 1874 to open Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Maple Mount; The sisters who sought an independent community called the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph 100 years ago; And the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council, who began their work 50 years ago this year. Some of the questions Sister Maureen will explore are:

Associates John Little, Karen Siciliano, and Martha Little pose for a picture in the Motherhouse Chapel. Karen and Martha will be speaking on Associates Day on June 9.
Why would anyone take a spiritual risk? What enables or empowers a person/s to take a spiritual risk? What role does “certainty” play in spiritual risktaking? What stands in the way of spiritual risk-taking? “I hope to raise awareness of our need to be open to spiritual risk-taking and also help the participants understand that such risk-taking arises from the Holy Spirit and is made possible by grace,” Sister Maureen said. The second session is called “Guided by the Spirit,” and will be led by Associates Martha Little and Karen Siciliano, both graduates of the Spiritual Direction Training Program at Maple Mount. Karen will share her story of how the Holy Spirit has moved in her life. “Angela had her vision of the Ursuline company when she was a young woman,” Little said. “We know from the books written about her she prayed and listened to the Spirit all through her life. Sometimes this is hard for us ‘regular’ people to grasp. Is the guidance of the Holy Spirit stronger for the religious communities? I think we like to believe this to be true because it helps us to step back from our place in God’s world and let the religious communities, our church hierarchy, our do the ‘work,’” Little government said. “If you have been fortunate enough to have sisters or priests for friends you know they are in this world struggling Continued on page 3

A Word from Marian... Dear Sisters and Brothers in Saint Angela, Associates and Sisters Day is fast approaching - June 9, the highlight of our associate year. The day’s schedule is at left, and you’ll find the registration form on the back. Associates and Sisters Day is a special day of celebration for all of us – the sisters, associates who made commitments many years ago, those who are making their initial and Bennett, OSUA lifetime commitments this year, and Marian Coordinator of for all of us who will become part of Ursuline Partnerships Angela’s community in the future. I recall the day I made my lifetime commitment. It was my birthday – several members of my family were in the chapel. An even greater number of my associate family joined the sisters to welcome me to full membership as a lifetime daughter of Angela. Surrounded by warm smiles and lots of hugs, it was a thrill to know I am part of this worldwide, historic, powerful group of women and men who are so dedicated and determined to be where the world wants them to be. We’re all on the same journey following Angela’s lead to the feet of Jesus! I must use this opportunity to congratulate all of you for your responses to the Ursuline Sisters Centennial Service project. I’m inspired by your dedication to identify needs in your own communities. The great variety and inventiveness you’ve used to make a difference to others in need is truly amazing! I’m looking forward to seeing you on June 9. Until then, may you be richly blessed!

Associate Update
Associates celebrating 25 years share a love for the Ursulines More than a dozen Ursuline Associates 25 Years are celebrating their lifetime commitments Mary Leda Rice made 25 years ago this year, and several Winnie R. Cohron say the spirituality of the Ursuline Sisters is Isabel Crenshaw what drew and sustains them. Therese Fraize Mary Kennedy, of Owensboro, Ky., Shirley Hagman was an Ursuline Sister for 20 years before Mary Kennedy she left the community and became one of Linda Mulligan Perri the earliest associates. “I love Mount Saint Sarah Bowling Pat Davis Joseph and I love the sisters,” Mary said. “I Margie Hill just like to be connected with them. I like Raynell Prado to help them out, but I don’t get to help as (See others on page 2) much as I would like. There are some pretty great people at the Mount.” Mary said she has seen the number of associates grow over the years, but the motivations of those who become associates remains the same. “They very much love the sisters and want to do things for them. It seems like it has grown stronger.” Shirley Hagman lives in Hawesville, Ky., and the Ursuline Associate Shirley Hagman, Sisters who taught at Immaculate Conception School there encouraged right, laughs with Sister Rose Marita O’Bryan on Associates her to become an associate. “I and Sisters Day in 2008. enjoyed the retreats we had back then,” Shirley said. “I prayed for the sisters all the time.” She still enjoys coming to the Mount and has friends who live there. “We have a group that meets once a month to pray for the (sisters),” she said. Each morning she reads intercessions from her book, “Praying with Angela Merici,” and her prayers always include the Ursuline Sisters, she said. For Therese Fraize, of Morganfield, Ky., the Ursulines have always been a part of her family. “In our family, Mount Saint Joseph was known to be a very special place,” said Therese, a former Ursuline. “Mom attended school there and she had a sister and a niece who were community members. All of us children were Ursuline educated. Having attended (Mount Saint Joseph) Academy and having been a community member myself, the opportunity to once again be formally affiliated with the Ursulines was an unexpected gift. “During the formative years, Sister Fran Wilhelm held miniretreats on Sunday afternoons for the small group of associates who were able to attend,” Therese said. “Subsequent directors continued these enriching encounters. The wholeness and holiness of those experiences helped fill the need to be Ursuline again and sustained relationships with community members which continue to be of enormous importance to me. “Rediscovering the spirit of Angela provided new motivation,” Therese said. “Teaching as an Ursuline Associate was truly the work of Angela. I utilized teaching skills and techniques learned from many wonderful sister educators.” n

Dear Friends, As we think toward our June “Associates and Sisters Day” and our focus on Saint Angela as risk-taker, I say to you, “Take a walk!” Yes, take a walk and reflect on how even our most mundane daily actions embody risk-taking. Too often, perhaps, we imagine “risk-taking” as being Sister Sharon Sullivan automatically about embracing Congregational Leader the unusual, the daring and perhaps even the dangerous. And certainly we need those whose vision and prayer position them at such nexus points in life. Such often are the prophets among us. But even more we need, we rely upon, the “everyday” risk-takers. So, back to this walk I’ve asked you to take. So, there you are, standing still, poised to move to that next destination. What must you do to begin? Well, of course, you pick up your foot; but before you put it down in front of you, you must lean into the uncertainty of imbalance and faith. Before that first half of your step is completed, you are already leaning beyond your comfort zone, on your tiptoes, trusting that hip and knee and ankle will support your next step and your balance will return. Yet, on you trudge – or stride – or stroll. Such is our daily risk-taking. In so many ways we move forward with faith in the support of our God and our community of believers, leaning beyond our comfort zone into the uncertainty of each day. We celebrate each of us – our everyday risk-takers; in a special way we recognize those who have dared this daily walk of risk-taking with Saint Angela for 25 years. Thank you for being such a witness of faith.

right along with us,” Little said. “So if associates are responsible for our actions that are guided by the Holy Spirit, how does that look for us?” After lunch, a panel of six associates will offer examples of someone or some group that took a risk and led to a great impact in their lives. Those panel members are Carol Hill from Grayson County, Ky., Joanne Mason from Hancock County, Ky., Judy Sims from Muhlenberg County, Ky., Carol O’Keefe from Kansas, Peggy Clark from Owensboro and Elaine Wood from Barlow, Ky. An opening prayer service, a report on the Young Daughters of Saint Angela, a report from Sister Martha Keller regarding vocations, and a remembrance of sisters and associates we’ve lost in the past year will also be part of the day, leading up to the commitment ceremony during Mass.n

“Planning is an act of love...” Dear Associates, Spring is upon us and it is truly beautiful at the Mount. This time of the year is so filled with new life, new growth and new promise for the future. The fields are being prepared for the crops and the little calves are jumping and running all over the pastures. It is a time of planning the gardens so we can have fresh vegetables later in the summer. As the Director of Development, I need to take this time to plan for all the activities that will take place during the new fiscal year. We are planning the picnic, teas, dinners and visits to parishes, individuals and groups. Without planning, we don’t know where we are going and we could get pretty overwhelmed. The same is true with planned giving. Each of us needs to look into the future and make plans for those we love. All that I have belongs to the community with the exception of a few items that were passed to me from my mom and dad. They are small but special and I have made provisions for them to be passed on to members of my family. Now is the time to plan. We never know when God will call us.

Many people ask me how I have the ‘nerve’ to talk to people about bequests and wills. It doesn’t take nerve. It just takes love. When I visit the sisters in Saint Joseph Villa, I see women who have given their whole lives for others -- Sister Jean Madeline who brought education and happiness to so many, Sister Jean Gertrude, who taught me how to read in the first grade and all the others who have touched my life and the lives of so many. When I look at our mission list and see all the sisters who are giving of themselves every day to spread the gospel of Jesus, they give me courage. They give out of love for the mission. As associates of the Ursuline Sisters, we know you love Saint Angela, our sisters and our mission. We see the wonderful things you are doing to get closer to God and help others. All we ask is that you pray for us, pray with us and if it is possible, remember the Ursuline Sisters in your will or other bequests after you have taken care of your family. Love is the reason we do what we do. Have a wonderful spring, a happy Easter season and a summer filled with many blessings.

Kansas Y-DOSA collects 100 items; KY group gets pinned By Cindy Reilly, Y-DOSA member, age 12 (Kansas)
In Y-DOSA, do you wonder what we Young Daughters of Saint Angela “sisters” do at our meetings? This January we went to Bishop Miege High School in Shawnee Mission, Kan., there is a Saint Angela Merici chapel there. We celebrated Saint Angela’s feast day with a candlelight rosary and dinner. Everyone in Y-DOSA was involved. We invited our families and all of the associates. It was a fun night. We are now doing formation meetings. Formation meetings are for the new Y-DOSA members to learn about Saint Angela, Saint Ursula and our core values of Prayer, Service, Empowerment, Justice and Contemplative Presence. The formation meetings also help the older members to review what Y-DOSA is all about. We are also about to collect a lot of baby wipes for a women’s shelter in Kansas City. Our goal is to collect 100 packages in honor of the 100-year anniversary of the Sisters in Maple Mount, Ky. They pray for us so hard, they deserve recognition and love. I hope you learned a little about what Y-DOSA does. I hope you enjoyed it and if you ever need anything, pray to Saint Angela. St. Mary of the Woods
The Y-DOSA group from Whitesville, Ky., visited Mount Saint Joseph for a Scrutiny Retreat Feb. 24-25 to prepare for their pinning on March 20 as Y-DOSA members (see photo at left). The retreat, “Finding Refuge at the Feet of Jesus Christ,” was led by Sister Martha Keller. The girls prayed and played games with the sisters, and shared supper with them. They also toured the Angela Oratory. They were given journals for note-taking at the retreat.
The St. Mary of the Woods chapter of the Young Daughters of Saint Angela in Whitesville, Ky., received a visit from Saint Angela Merici herself on her feast day, Jan. 27. Saint Angela (who bore a striking resemblance to Sister Marietta Wethington) met the St. Mary of the Woods school assembly and shared some of her life and how God called her. Pictured, Front row, left to right: Sister Karla Kaelin, director of religious education at the parish, Sarah Smith, “Saint Angela,” Allison Mattingly and Silva Stauffer; Back row, Sister Suzanne Sims, school principal, Breanna Murphy, Ashley Haynes and Chassity Roberts. Young Daughters of Saint Angela currently have two chapters: Kansas City, Kan., metro area, and St. Mary of the Woods School in Whitesville, Ky.

Suzanne Reiss shares her time and talent By Pauline Goebel, OSUA
Creative, artistic, energetic, generous, encourager, enthusiastic, organizer, infectious laughter, faithful friend. These are just a few of the words than can be used to describe Suzanne Reiss. Suzanne’s generosity takes her Susanne Reiss, right, to Mount Saint Joseph several with her mother, Susan, times a year where she serves on and Sister Clarentia three advisory boards – associates, Hutchins development and vocations. She also helps put up and take down the enormous Christmas tree in the chapel, visits with the sisters in the dining room and the infirmary, and does myriad other things that need to be done. Suzanne is coordinator for the Louisville associates and brings many creative ideas to keep meetings lively and interesting. She works hard to make us a cohesive group.
UPDATE MAY 2012.indd 5
A devoted daughter, Suzanne drives from Lanesville, Ind., to Louisville to help her mother, Susan, also an associate, with whatever she needs. They attend Mass together every Saturday evening at Our Mother of Sorrows where they are members. A loving wife, Suzanne has recently cared for her husband, Don, through a difficult illness while maintaining her outside interests. Back home in Lanesville, Suzanne enjoys scrapbooking. Lucky are the recipients of one of her beautiful projects. This writer has a priceless collage of her new grandson. Many are the recipients of her cards for every occasion. She has a flair for matching envelopes with stamps and stickers. She even uses small Band-Aids on get well cards. I’m sure there are many other things Suzanne does that we don’t know about and she is too modest to tell us. Suzanne expresses genuine interest for what is going on in the lives of those around her. I am blessed to have Suzanne for my friend.
