ASSOCIATES/SISTERS DAY TO FOCUS ON EUCHARIST by Sister Marietta Wethington, OSU

“Saint Angela and the Eucharist” will be the focus of the 2005 Associates/Sisters Day on Saturday, July 9. Brochures outlining the day have been mailed to all associates. If you haven’t received one, please let us know and we will send you one! Last October Pope John Paul II declared this the year of the Eucharist. In her Rule, Angela urges her daughters to “go to Mass every day…a communion in the spirit.” To help us reflect more deeply on the meaning of the Eucharist in our life as followers of Angela, and to increase our love and appreciation of the gift of the Holy Eucharist, we have invited Sister Margaret Ann Hagan, an Ursuline from Louisville, and our own Mount Saint Joseph Ursuline Sister Rita Klarer to facilitate the day for us. Both presenters are well qualified to lead us in our and discussion. One of the reflections. Ursuline Society Staff Share Values, Vision April 19-21 found about 50 enthusiastic lay persons and sisters gathered at Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center to consider together their common values as support staff for the communities of the Ursuline Society. These were associate directors, health care administrators, mission advancement/mission effectiveness/development directors, motherhouse administrators/coordinators, property managers, human resource personnel, and administrative assistants serving in these Ursuline communities. Facilitator Sister Margaret Ann Hagan — Ursuline Society coordinator, led the group in naming their shared values and planning steps to carry out those values. During one exercise, the participants declared their support of one another and recognized those who laid the foundations of their communities in whose footsteps they walk. Together they placed bricks in a pattern symbolizing the foundation of a new entity. Ursuline associate directors reflect on the common threads of their During the closing prayer on Thursday, they planted experience. The Ursuline Society, comprises the nine autonomous Ursuline communities of Belleville, Illinois; Paola, Kansas: Brown County, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Toledo, and Youngstown, Ohio; and Louisville and Maple Mount, Kentucky. Members of these communities have been meeting together since 1992. After declaring their intention “to move beyond collaboration toward integration” in 2002, the communities have made efforts to involve their entire membership in this process. In December 2004, associate directors in each of the communities were invited to meet together in Paola. (See cover story in the February issue of Update.) The April meeting of suppport staff continued the spirit of integration on a broader level.

Mandeville is the poorest of the three dioceses in Jamaica, which is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. In 2002, the Diocese of Owensboro adopted Mandeville as its sister diocese. Mary Danhauer holds a sleeping child at Our Lady of Hope Children’s Home in the Diocese of Mandeville, Jamaica.

On May 25, at the 4:30 p.m. Mass in the motherhouse chapel, the Ursuline community will commission Mary, our associate, to take the charism of Angela to our brothers and sisters in Mandeville. You are invited to join us for Mary’s commissioning. Pamela “Penny” Cooper Burns of Fisherville, Kentucky, has been part of the Ursuline family since the age of ten when she attended school at Saint Margaret Mary School in Louisville. She and her husband, Tom, are very active members of All Saints Catholic Church in Taylorsville. A fellow parishioner wrote, “She is a wonderful shepherd who has spoiled us by her generosity and love.” Another wrote, “They keep in touch and just find a way to make life easier for others.” A former member of the Mount Saint Joseph Ursuline Community, she is retired from the Human Resources Department at General Electric. Her contact sister is Sister Sara Marie Gomez. Margaret Mount of Phillipsburg, Missouri, has been married for 36 years and has three daughters and five grandchildren. She is a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Lebanon, Missouri. An active parish member, Margaret serves on several committees and also belongs to the Holy Fingers Quilting Club. She is described as “a caring and giving person” who is “always ready to pitch in to help anyone she can.” Her contact sister is Sister Renée Monaghan. Father Ben Luther is a priest of the Diocese of Owensboro and pastor of Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Central City, Kentucky. Sister Jamesina Spain and other sisters teaching at Saint Joseph School in Mayfield were the beginning of his friendship and regard for the Ursuline community. A great supporter of the Mount Saint Joseph Picnic, Father Ben promotes “anything that is going on at the Mount” to his parish. His contact sisters are Sisters Rose Karen Johnson and Rose Theresa Johnson. Tracy Strother is a medical designee and youth care counselor at the Baptist Youth Ranch in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. She is the mother of two grown daughters and is a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Leitchfield. She is very active in the Grayson County area and the winner of many civic awards. URSULINE ASSOCIATES GATHER The Henderson/Union County associate group experienced high hospitality April 29 when they met at the Morganfield home of associate Therese Fraize and her husband, Ken Hurm. All gathered to enjoy a delicious pot luck supper. Then, in the context of a prayer centered around the words of Angela Merici, the associates discussed Angela’s life and reflected on the ways she has inspired each of them. FOR FELLOWSHIP AND WORSHIP The new Dorothy Day House was the setting for the meeting of Memphis associates on March 3. Following evening prayer, Sister Maureen led the group in a reflection on what being an Ursuline Associate has meant to each of them. Co-Directors of Ursuline Partnerships Marian Bennett and Sister Marietta Wethington enjoyed overnight accommodations in the Dorothy Day House, which the associates, sisters, and others are still preparing for opening to the public. For more information about the Memphis Dorothy Day House, see the story, “A New Day is Coming,” in the spring issue of Ursulines Alive. Front row: Sister Maureen Griner, Barbara Boatman, Lorna Horishny, Joyce Firenza, Sister Margaret Ann Zinselmeyer with Adasia Jackson.

On April 9, 15 Radcliff area associates gathered at St. Christopher Church. They began with a prayer service on the Easter Season: “He Is Risen.” Then followed a poignant discussion on the funeral of Pope John Paul II. All agreed the ceremony was a beautiful credit to the Catholic Church with all its pageantry, sacredness, and awesomeness, enhanced by the Gregorian chant that took us back to our early childhood. The splendor and beauty lifted our spirits to the Lord. All enjoyed a videotape presentation by Father Michael Himes, “The Mystery of Faith: An Introduction to Catholicism,” followed by a lively and informative discussion. Audrey Durbin, the April winner of the Quilt of the Month Club, proudly displayed her lovely quilt. There were many “ahhs” over the beauty of the quilting by Sister Jean Madeline Peake and the cross-stitches by Sister Catherine Marie Lauterwasser. We don’t have a photo of the April 9 meeting, but we do have one of Feb 26, also at St. Christopher Church. Pictured at right are the participants — from the Radcliff and Grayson County areas — at a recent meeting. Since this picture, the Radcliff group met again and many more associates attended. PICNIC ! PICNIC ! PICNIC ! How can it be time to think about the great MSJ Picnic? This is an early call for those of you with green thumbs (or a friend at the plant store) to nurture pretty, saleable plants for the plant booth. Begin now to find “pretty pots” to make our plant donations even more appealing. In our evaluation meetings following Picnic 2004, the greatest need expressed was, “We need more volunteers.” Won’t you consider joining the sisters, associates and other faithful helpers for a day (or several days!) of hard work and fun? Last year, with good weather and many willing hands, 5000 people came to enjoy Mount Saint Joseph food, games, and hospitality. Mark your calendar now for September 11, 2005, to support our retired sisters, and plan to join us. You’ll be most welcome! LOOK FOR MORE PICNIC NEWS IN THE NEXT UPD ATE! UPDA
