by Sister Marietta Wethington, OSU, and Marian Bennett, OSUA

Charles Kuralt has nothing on us! When we began as Co-Directors of Ursuline Partnerships in July, our first priority was to meet as many Associates as possible. The trek has begun — with great joy! As we breathe a sigh of relief that the Great American Election Process has run its course, your Co-Directors of Ursuline Partnerships continue on the campaign trail. We began in August at Leitchfield, Kentucky, meeting with the Grayson County associates at St. Joseph Church. Starting with Mass celebrated by Father Randy Howard, this prayerful, joyful group shared their lives with us, giving us an appreciation for the dedication and commitment inspired by our Ursuline Sisters. ON THE ROAD WITH YOUR CO-DIRECTORS Later that month, we hopped in the trusty car again to travel to St. Louis, Missouri, where we were warmly greeted by Jean and Francis (“Stef”) Steffen and the Saint Louis area associates. After sharing a delicious meal, we had an enriching discussion of ways to connect with the Ursuline Sisters to make the presence of Angela alive. All of our Associate gatherings resonate with the smiles and prayers of faith-filled people seeking to share the mission and spirit of Saint Angela — and good food, too! As we talk, laugh and pray, we explore the Ursuline Associate experience together and grow in commitment to the work of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph.

Owensboro Area Associates Celebrate Potluck in the Park by Jean Bertram, OSUA

On Tuesday evening, September 21, a group of Ursuline Sisters and Associates gathered at Legion Park in Owensboro. The sun was setting, and the hustle and bustle of five o’clock could be seen and heard all around us. It was my first encounter with many of the sisters, since I had just completed my “end of life” statement the day before. I myself had had a busy and unsettling day. I have five children still at home...so you can imagine! When I stepped through the door of the picnic riches seemed inconceivable among so many who had set such shelter, Sister Marietta was speaking and things aside. Marian Bennett led us in prayer and dinner was everyone sat in contemplation. I quietly took my served. As I looked at the tables filled with food before me, the seat and joined in. The reading from Matthew richness of the hands that had prepared this meal sent shivers of that day stirred everyone. The thought of worldly love down my spine. As we ate dinner and talked with one another, quietness had come around the shelter. Gone were the sounds of traffic and the thoughts of the day. We were full of joy and laughter, and love now filled the air. After dinner we came together for discussion and the business of setting next month’s meeting. I was thinking: “What about next week?” We then held discussions within our groups. The questions differed for the sisters and associates, but the theme, I think, was the same: “How can we serve each other to bring about the purpose of the Lord?” I knew in my heart that after everything I had heard and experienced that evening, we had all the ingredients for Enjoying the potluck picnic in Owensboro are (from greatness. As I said my goodbyes and walked to my car, I left) Shirley Hagman, Sister Rebecca White, Mary thanked God for being “the richest woman on earth.” Ann Schilling, Sister Martha Keller, Isabel Crenshaw.

A W ARM W ELCOME

TO

O UR N EW A SSOCIATES

Jean A. Bertram, wife of Mike and mother of seven children, comes to us with joy and enthusiasm. She is an active member of St. Stephen Cathedral Parish, Owensboro; some of her many acts of service include being a lector and participating in Koinonia, the Parish Faith Fest and Vacation Bible School. Most recently, Jean joined other associates, helping in the Ursuline booth at the Reid’s Orchard Apple Festival. Her pastor says of Jean, “She has a very loving and pleasant disposition, accompanied by a generous heart.” Jean’s contact sister is Sister Suzanne Sims. Michael Bufalini joins his wife, Marcy, as an Ursuline Associate. They live in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he is employed by Zentech Manufacturing. The Bufalinis share a warm friendship with Sisters Maureen Griner and Margaret Ann Zinselmeyer, who invited them to join us and serve as their contact sisters. Michael and Marcy are the parents of Joseph Francis and Anna Eleanor. We are told, “They treasure their Church family and have made faith a central part of their lives,” and “…they live in the secular world living their faith every day.” Sara (Sally) Keough Scully is a registered nurse who lives in the small island town of Alameda, California. She is described by one and all as “a caring, compassionate, always-there-when-youneed-her person.” Another of her references said, “Sally, at first meeting, shared with me her genuine smile, her sincere heart and her deep faith in God.” A graduate of Catholic schools, Sally has two brothers, John and Tom, in addition to her sister, Sister Rosemary Keough, OSU, who will serve as her contact sister. Bobbie Nell Smith of Central City, Kentucky, is of the Baptist faith and a great friend of Sisters Rose Theresa Johnson and Rose Karen Johnson. She writes, “Thanks to the Ursuline Sisters for letting me be a part of your life. It is nice to fellowship with others on our journey to Christ.” She has visited the Mount many times, has attended a Prayer and Reflection Day with Msgr. Powers, and journeyed to greet the Ursuline Flatboat at its landing in Owensboro. Sisters Rose Karen and Rose Theresa are her contact sisters.

ASSOCIATE BILL MOORE: ARDENT ADVOCATE Ursuline Associate Bill Moore, a retired Baptist minister, recently attended the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America annual assembly in Maryland. At that meeting he shared copies of the “Prayer for Leadership” written by Benedictine Sister Joan Chittister, which he received at our Associate/ Religious Day in June. He shared copies of the prayer with friends and was asked to lead the prayer in a worship service. In addition, the current issue of the Peace Fellowship Newsletter carries part of the prayer for use in church services.

Ursuline Society: “ A New Model of Ursuline Community Together” by Sister Suzanne Sims, OSU

A new chapter in the history of Ursulines in the United States began in 1992 when the nine autonomous Ursuline communities met in Youngstown, Ohio. That meeting marked the beginning of what we call the “Ursuline Society.” The congregations of Belleville, Illinois; Brown County, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Toledo, and Youngstown, Ohio; Paola, Kansas; and Louisville and Maple Mount in Kentucky, ratified a mission statement at the leadership meeting held in Frontenac, Minnesota, in May 2002. The nine communities agreed to “create a new model of Ursuline community together” and “to move beyond collaboration and toward integration” during 2002-2007. In 2003, Sister Margaret Ann Hagan from the Ursulines of Louisville became the first full-time coordinator of the new model. She is assisted by a three-person steering committee composed of one sister from each of the three geographic areas represented in the Ursuline Society. This steering committee works with the coordinator to gather information from the member communities and to establish a clear vision and model for all the membership. Sister Martha Keller from our Maple Mount community currently serves as the triad representative for Belleville, Maple Mount and Paola. Sister Margaret Ann Over the last two years, all of the sisters in each community Hagan, OSU have studied one another’s history, mission statements, and other pertinent information to help us get to know one another better. The sisters who wished have a prayer partner from one of the other congregations. In addition, Sister Margaret Ann has spent significant amounts of her time visiting each of the nine communities to get to know the sisters and the uniqueness of each congregation. Currently, the members are asked to complete the exercises in a common workbook Sister Martha Keller, entitled Ursuline Society in Collaboration. This guide for prayer, study and discussion will OSU lead all the members into the future as it evolves for us. We invite you, our associates, to pray with and for us as we continue the integration. We will continue to update and involve you as the Ursuline Society mission becomes reality for us.

I’m nobody; Who are you? Are you nobody too? Asked Emily Dickinson. Well, Emily, I’d say that nowadays I am definitely nobody too. Like an alien from outer space, I cannot speak the language or find my place in the universe, so I pace around looking for clues: Why did I come in this room? What am I looking for? Why can’t I find it? Then I see it right beside me. Like Icarus, my wings have melted, and I have fallen into a sea of Forgetfulness. Sharon Tuttle Hermann

Ursulines of Mount Saint Joseph and Belleville Move Toward Merger by Sister Michele Morek, OSU

It is one of the “signs of our times” that groups of religious women are moving toward new ways of collaborating with and supporting each other, for the sake of their mission and ministries. The Ursulines of Mount Saint Joseph are exploring such a relationship with the Ursuline Sisters of Belleville, Illinois. The two communities have known each other for many years, especially through their interactions in the Ursuline Society, and this new venture seems to be a natural progression of that friendly relationship. Three of the Belleville sisters already reside in the Mount Saint Joseph retirement community. The two communities have very similar roots. The Belleville community traces its most recent origins from Calvarienberg, Germany. They came to the United States in 1910 to minister to the pioneer people in North Dakota, teaching in parochial schools and providing summer religion classes for public school children. In 1942, the regional American motherhouse was transferred to the Diocese of Belleville, where the sisters staffed schools which served poor and minority children. In 1977, the motherhouse in Germany voted to allow the Belleville sisters to seek to become an autonomous (independent) congregation. The Belleville motherhouse, along with three residential houses, is located on eight wooded acres in the center of Assistant congregational leader Sister Cheryl Clemons Belleville, Illinois, very close to East St. Louis. The sisters (third from left) visits with Belleville Ursulines (from left) Sisters Emily Zent, Mary Elizabeth Krampe, and Eileen would like to maintain an Ursuline presence in Belleville, Mullen, in Sister Emily’s room in Saint Joseph Villa. and are looking for some ministry that would like to use the property — any ideas? canonical identity and accepting the Mount Saint A “merger” means that the Belleville community will Joseph Constitutions as their way of life. As you can join the Mount Saint Joseph Ursulines, losing their own imagine, this is a big step for the Belleville sisters, and there will be a lot of “letting go” that has to PRA YER REQ UESTS SUBMITTED RAYER EQUESTS happen on their journey. The Belleville sisters have TO THE OFFICE their own very active associate group, and the two OF URSULINE PARTNERSHIPS communities will be looking for ways to introduce O UR SICK: the two associate groups to one another.
