Education at the heart of Ursulines

From our Congregational Leader Dear Friends, Advent and Christmas are times of waiting. Waiting to recognize the gifts of teaching and to celebrate the presence of God within and among us. “Wait a minute,” you might be saying. You are certainly familiar with the idea of Christmas focusing on the gift of God’s presence among us, but you did not know that Christmas had anything to do with “teaching.” I would say, “Of course it does!” Think of God’s angels Sister Sharon as the first “School of Teacher Education.” Perhaps we could say that Gabriel taught Mary to recognize God’s love within her and gifted her with the grace that permitted her to share her spirit with the world. The heavenly hosts of angels not only gave the good news to the shepherds, but “certified” them to teach that good news, carrying the message throughout the countryside. And, of course, Christmas commemorates the birth of the greatest teacher the world has known. So, Christmas is surely a time to celebrate teachers. In this issue of Ursulines Alive, you can join in a rich celebration of teaching and education. Read how hundreds, if not thousands, of combined years of ministering in the Ursuline model of education have formed the hearts and minds of these followers of Saint Angela. They will share their experiences in education from early childhood through university graduate programs, from direct classroom teaching to support and administrative roles. All in the spirit of Saint Angela. In the spirit of Advent waiting, we encourage you to join in our anticipation of the celebration and observance of the centennial of the founding of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph. Please raise your prayers with ours as we recognize our first hundred years of service as Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph. Rejoice with Sister Marie Julie as – not quite retired – she continues to delight others and to delight in her own unique musical expressions of God’s love in her life. And, of course, Advent and Christmas are a time of deep gratitude for the incredible and awesome diversity and beauty of the munificence of our God. In this same attitude of gratefulness, we extend our thanks and ask God’s rich blessing upon all the generous benefactors who have given of their time, treasure and talents to the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph and to their mission and ministries. In that same spirit then, I wish each of you an Advent that is fulfilled beyond your brightest hopes and a Christmas that teaches you even more than you can imagine about God’s great love. still making a difference When Ursuline Sister Anne Michelle Mudd was a student, she often needed to be told a little more to fully understand her lessons. During her 47 years as a teacher, she has never forgotten that. “I don’t move on until every child understands,” Sister Anne Michelle said. “If one child couldn’t get it, I’d take that child aside and work with him on his level.” If there is a way to sum up what it means to receive an “Ursuline education,” perhaps it is that attention to the individual needs of the student. “I was taught by Ursulines, and the impact it made on me was always the community character of this ministry,” said Sister Mary Celine Weidenbenner. “The whole and the individual cannot be separated and still be a vital process. The legacy that I strive to continue is the growth of the healthy/whole individual in the healthy/whole community.” Like Sister Anne Michelle, Sister Mary Celine chose to make education her only ministry since she began teaching in 1967. “The quote from Daniel: ‘Those who instruct others for justice sake, shall shine as stars for all eternity,’ is the inner call to serve in education even today,” said Sister Mary Celine, who teaches at Mary Carrico School in Knottsville, Ky. “Education is to draw out, and that process starts with the growth in learning -that is my commitment to myself, and all the youngsters whom I teach. For me, teaching/learning is a heartfelt process that expresses itself in all of life.” For much of the history of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, practically every sister was a teacher or principal. Over the past four decades, the sisters have branched out into ministries in parishes, health care, counseling and other areas, but the community has always had sisters who’ve been involved in education. “When you love what you are doing, why change?” said Sister Mary Diane Taylor, a teacher since 1954, and Sister Mary Diane Taylor, right, works with a student in her printmaking class at Brescia University. an art professor at Brescia College/University since 1967. The Ursuline Sisters founded Brescia in 1950. “For an Ursuline, education is more than a job – it is the fulfilling of a religious vow,” Sister Mary Diane said. “That has to make a difference. I try always to be professional in my dealings with students while at the same time being ‘human’ enough to share their joys as well as their pain. I would like to touch their lives as mine has been touched by my Ursuline teachers.” No one can surpass Sister Martina Rockers for her commitment to providing an Ursuline education. Sister Martina began teaching in 1946 – 65 years ago – and has been a biology teacher at Bishop Miege High School in the Kansas City, Kan., suburb of Roeland Park since 1958. These days she teaches AP biology. “This is very much like a family at school,” she said. “There’s a real sense of community with parents, faculty and students. There is my blood family, the Ursuline Sisters are a second family, and this is my third family,” she said. Sister Laurita Spalding has been a teacher since 1968 and now teaches second-graders at Holy Name School in Henderson, Ky. “I think we, as educators, are deeply committed to making a difference in the society in which we live,” she said. “I am still in this field because I feel that I can make a positive difference for students and their families. Making a difference can be accomplished by just being there for the children and giving them positive feedback for the little things that they do well and encouraging them to reach for the stars. “The best part of this work is waking up each morning knowing that, although we have the same routine day after day, that something different and exciting will take place for the day,” Sister Laurita said. “The children never cease amazing me with their creativity and simplicity. They help me to be a better me.” Sister Monica Seaton, who has been a special education teacher since 2007 in Daviess County, Ky., said her ministry is about offering hope. “So many people (especially young people) are searching for meaning in their lives. Society sends mixed messages and many times it may be difficult to sort through all the ‘stuff’ out there and find what truly matters,” Sister Monica said. “It is my hope that I, somehow, can inspire a spark of hope in the lives of my students and encourage them to unlock the potential they Continued on page 4

have inside to make positive, healthy choices that will lead to a better future. Education should be about gaining knowledge and putting that knowledge into action in order to leave the world a better place than we found it.”

“Aha” moments Sister Mary Timothy Bland has spent her entire ministry in the classroom, beginning in 1967. “The summer I don’t look forward to going back, I need to start looking for something else,” she said. She now teaches second-graders at the Owensboro Catholic Elementary School K-3 Campus. “Having children that you can teach a skill, that ‘aha’ moment, that just makes it worthwhile,” she said. The moment of enlightenment in a student’s eyes is one of the favorite parts of teaching, several sisters said. “With the little ones, it’s when children come in who you think don’t know anything, you work with them, and all of a sudden they can read a sentence,” said Sister Anne Michelle, who is a teacher and principal at St. Paul School in Leitchfield, Ky. “That has brought tears to my eyes many times with first-graders.” “One of my greatest joys in teaching is seeing someone succeed in an undertaking where he/she had previously failed,” Sister Mary Diane said. “Years ago, I was teaching the ‘Ward Method’ of singing to a thirdgrade class at Seven Holy Founders in St. Louis. Two of the students simply could not ‘carry a tune’ — typical monotones. After many failures, I had them make the sound of a train whistle or a siren. Immediately, they both heard how their voices had changed in imitating that sound. They were no longer monotones. The joy on their faces I’ll never forget.” “Saint Angela’s ministry was about empowering and

4

helping those who didn’t have many opportunities to be successful,” Sister Monica said. “When I think of Ursuline education as a legacy, I am drawn to Angela’s words of ‘act, move and believe.’ Being in a public school, most of my students don’t have an understanding of Ursuline, but I do try to get them to understand that, through education, they have the chance to act, move and believe in themselves. The best part of my ministry is walking with students and watching them grow in self-confidence about things they didn’t think they could achieve.”

Bringing Jesus to the classroom Ursuline Sister Marilyn Mueth has been teaching second grade at St. James Catholic School in Millstadt, Ill., for 20 years, and the parents there are so grateful to have a sister preparing their children for the sacraments. “I think having nuns and priests brings religion more to life,” said Wendy Fischer, a parent of three who was interviewed in 2009. “It’s important to have her with the kids, she can explain so much.” Carolyn Taylor has taught with Sister Mary Timothy for 25 years. “She’s so dedicated to the children and her mission,” Taylor said. “She talks about Saint Ursula and Saint Angela Merici with the children. It’s just really good to see that part of our Catholic heritage and our faith. Because she is a religious, she exudes that.” Sister Anne Michelle said, “When I filled out my papers to enter the community, I said, ‘I want to teach little children about God.’” Several of the sisters still hear from former students, but Sister Anne Michelle thought it was unlikely to ever know in this lifetime what sort of impression she made on a student. But in October, a woman came to her after Mass to tell her about her college-age daughter. She talks about what you talked about in her religion classes in the fifth and sixth grades.”

Lessons outside the textbook Sister Carol Shively has been an educator since 1982, and superintendent of the Diocese of Shreveport, La., Catholic Schools, since 1999. She believes education can transform lives. “As long as I have the passion every day to lead in the education world, I will remain,” she said. She was taught by the Ursulines as a girl, and remembers the impact of more than just their classroom instruction. “My teachers were committed to education and formation. Each of my teachers knew my family and the situation that I lived in because my parents were divorced,” she said. “Being from a divorced family back then meant that the sisters really helped my dad in forming me. Each day the sisters would be sure that I had my homework ready to go home. They would check to see that I planned my time well.”

Sister Michael Marie Friedman is the principal of St. James School in Elizabethtown, Ky., and said the Catholic schools have an important part to play in carrying out the education mission of the Church. “The religion/theology classes each day, plus the atmosphere of religious education in all subjects makes Catholic schools special and a unique place for students to learn all about their faith as well as secular subjects,” she said. “I hope I am ‘making a difference’ in the lives of students and the families with whom I work. I hope 10-15 years down the road, the seeds will mature and take root.” Sister Dee Long has been a teacher or principal since her first mission in 1979, and now teaches at Our Lady of the Angels, an inner-city, multi-ethnic school in Kansas City, Mo. Sister Dee has always taught at schools with a predominance of students from low-income families. “I think that’s where God wants me,” she said. “So many of these students are latch-key kids, either from single parent homes, or their parents have drug and alcohol problems. These kids need love,” Sister Dee said. “I try to give them everything they need. It makes me a better person.”n 5

2012 Centennial

Ursuline Sisters will celebrate 100 years in 2012 The oldest of the maple trees that line All Saints Avenue at the Ursuline Motherhouse in Maple Mount show the scars of a century worth of weather. Whatever majesty they have lost, those trees symbolize a beginning. Shortly after receiving permission from Rome on Oct. 12, 1912 to become the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, the first mother superior, Mother Aloysius Willett, ordered 100 maple trees to be planted between the Guest House and the cemetery, creating All Saints Avenue. In the coming year, the Ursuline Sisters will celebrate their 100th anniversary as a community, one still based on new beginnings. It will be a yearlong celebration, highlighted by the values that embody the Ursuline Sisters – prayer, service, empowerment, justice and contemplative presence, all in the spirit of their founder, Saint Angela Merici. The theme for the coming year is “Woven with Threads of Courage and High Hope: 1912-2012.” It borrows from Saint Angela Merici’s encouraging words to her sisters to “have courage and high hope.” The year of celebration starts on Jan. 28, the Saturday following the feast of Saint Angela Merici, who founded the Ursuline Sisters in Brescia, Italy, in 1535. Significant events throughout the year – Alumnae Weekend on May 19-20, Associates and Sisters Day on June 9, Community Days for the sisters on July 11-13, Mount Saint Joseph Picnic on Sept. 9 – will all incorporate aspects of the Centennial celebration. The weekend of Oct. 12-14 will be the culmination of the celebrations. On Oct. 13, the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph and the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville will be invited to a Mass at the Motherhouse celebrated by the Most Rev. William Medley, bishop of the Diocese of Owensboro. Activities will fill the rest of the afternoon following the 11 a.m. Mass. On Oct. 14, a reception for the Ursulines of Mount Saint Joseph will

occur following Sunday Mass. Beginning in January, every month in 2012 will feature a fasting day on the 12th day of the month, along with a prayer service. The themes of these days follow the late theologian Maria Harris’ themes of biblical jubilees: fasting, fallowness and forgiveness. The Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph have always stood for service to others, so the main way to celebrate this anniversary year is with “Centennial Service.” Sisters, associates and other supporters of the sisters will be asked to identify a need in their communities and provide 100 items to help the disadvantaged, or 100 hours of service. Perhaps it’s 100 items of clothing for a shelter, or helping prepare 100 meals at a soup kitchen. It may be offering 100 prayers for someone who is disheartened. All these efforts will be chronicled and celebrated at year’s end for service to God’s people. Commemorative prayer cards with a special prayer for the year will be distributed. “Prayer to Saint Angela,” a song written by Father Jim Marchionda, OP, will be the official song of celebration for the year. The Ursuline Sisters website (www.ursulinesmsj. org) will have a presence each day with a significant moment from the past 100 years, and will keep visitors up to date on what’s happening next. The history of service and updates of the places the Ursulines now minister – eight states, Washington, D.C., and Chile, South America – will be regularly featured. The Ursuline Sisters of Louisville first came to what is now Maple Mount in 1874, at the request of Father Paul Joseph Volk, to open a school for girls that became Mount Saint Joseph Academy. Many of the graduates of the Academy wanted to join the Ursuline Sisters, but did not want to enter the novitiate in Louisville, where the language spoken was primarily German. An English-speaking novitiate was approved for Mount Saint Joseph in 1895 by Bishop George McCloskey. Following Bishop McCloskey’s death in 1909, an effort to combine the two novitiates led to a request by the Ursulines in Mount Saint Joseph to begin their own community. After a period of two years, the Apostolic Delegate to the United States, Archbishop John Bonzano, issued his decree on Oct. 12, 1912 to create the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph. Not Really Retired...

Sister Marie Julie enjoys her retirement

Sister Marie Julie Fecher retired as a music teacher after 50 years in 1994, but she doesn’t use that word. “It’s not retirement, it’s ‘refirement’ of the Spirit,” she said. “The Spirit comes forth as the body fades. It’s a new life, a wonderful life.” Sister Marie Julie Fecher Sister Marie Julie taught music in elementary, has played the organ at high school, and college. She Mass and served on the still plays the organ at Mass. Liturgy Committee for the sisters at the Motherhouse since leaving her last teaching job at Brescia College in 1994. She taught music in elementary and high schools from 1944 until going to Brescia in 1976. “There’s more pacing and less racing here,” she said from her room in Saint Joseph Villa. “There’s less employment and more enjoyment.” Wherever she taught school, she also offered private piano lessons, so the numbers of people she’s inspired with music would be difficult to count. She’s done so with a gentle and encouraging touch. “You have to make people feel worthwhile,” she said. Sister Marie Julie learned to play the piano from her mother. “I did not like it at all, I felt like it was a duty,” she said. By the time she began taking music classes at Mount Saint Joseph Academy, she enjoyed it. “I like to enjoy the depths of the music,” she said. “I like the challenge of accomplishment.” Her music teacher at the Academy was Sister Marguerite Younker, the person most responsible for

her coming to the Academy. Sister Marguerite became friends with Sister Marie Julie’s mother at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., when Sister Marie Julie was 2, and Sister Marguerite urged her friend to someday send her young daughter to the Academy. Sister Marie Julie knew Maple Mount was in her heart after she graduated, and a year later she entered the convent. Next year will mark her 70th year as an Ursuline Sister. She taught music at schools across Kentucky – New Haven, St. Francis, Leitchfield and in and around Louisville. Her favorites were her first and her last. From 1944-52, she was the music teacher and organist at St. Edward School in the Louisville suburb of Jeffersontown. “The pastor (Father Martin Frankenberger) was so good to me,” she said. “He got a wonderful pipe organ from another church,” but because of its height, the only place to locate it was in the second sacristy, Sister Marie Julie said. “I had to look through this grill to see when Father got up,” she said. “I had to jump off and run up the steps to look through the door to see what the children were doing and try to direct them. I was young then.” Her favorite ministry was the 18 years she spent teaching at Brescia, including teaching classical guitar. “I loved it, it’s a very soothing instrument,” she said. “I was able to study classical guitar for six weeks in Madrid, Spain.” These days she shares playing the organ and piano at Mass with Sisters Mary Eileen Howard and Rita Lavigne, and Sister Catherine Marie Lauterwasser has taken on more of the liturgy role. Friends can write to Sister Marie Julie at 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356.

Sarah Patterson brings passion for history to Archives The Archives office at Mount Saint Joseph reopened in July with the hiring of Sarah Patterson, who is doubling as director of archives for the Ursuline Sisters and the Diocese of Owensboro. “In the few months that I have been here, I have learned that Maple Mount possesses a rich history of religious life through communion with Christ, each other and by serving the people of God,” Sarah said. “The mission of the archives is to collect, preserve and make available the records of the Ursuline community which have enduring value ... Examples include the community annals (day to day recordings of events), photographs, newspapers, yearbooks, missions and schools served

by our sisters. Archives bring history to life and are a constant reminder of our roots and those who have come before us.” Sarah hails from Cincinnati, and received a bachelor’s degree in English from Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio. After two years with the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, she earned a master’s of library science at Indiana University. She was formerly an archivist at the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis. “Several of the sisters volunteer their time to the operation of the archives. Without their assistance we would not be able to accomplish the things we do,” Sarah said. Because Sarah is at the Mount part time, the archives are open by appointment only. Research requests are welcome. Email archives.msj@maplemount.org

From the director... Dear Friends of the Center, Greetings from Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center. The rain and wind have brought most of the leaves from the trees, a reminder that the winter season is fast approaching. In the liturgical calendar the Advent season is here. Advent is a time to prepare and wait for the beautiful season of Christmas and is a reminder that waiting is an important part of our spiritual life. God sent Jesus, Sister Ann the greatest gift, to earth to help us to live a “God life” and to remind us of our ultimate goal, heaven. Reflection Days for 2012 will focus on “Women in Scripture: How do we relate?” and will again be held the first Friday of each month. The Spiritual Direction Training Program will meet the third week of January for week six of the eight-week program. St. Meinrad seminarians will be with us during the fourth week of January for their discernment directed retreat. During the month of February, we welcome Catholic Engaged, a group of yarn spinners, and a Lenten retreat led by Monsignor Bernard Powers. In March, the Glenmary priests return for their theological retreat, and Sister Cheryl Clemons will lead a women’s retreat on the Scriptural woman Ruth. The liturgical season of Lent will begin the fourth Wednesday of February. While our elders remember the strict fast that accompanied Lent long ago, we approach it differently today. The season of Lent is meant to bring us to a point of conversion in our life. So, changes (sacrifices) that we make for Lent would continue through the rest of our life seasons. Lent is the period of the liturgical year from Ash Wednesday to Easter. The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer – through prayer, repentance, almsgiving and self-denial – for the annual commemoration during Holy Week of the death and resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events linked to the Passion of Christ and culminates in Easter, the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lent is a time of soul-searching and repentance in preparation for the celebration of Christ’s death and resurrection on Good Friday and Easter. In the Western Church, Lent consists of the 40 days before Easter, not counting Sundays. The Easter Season begins on April 8, 2012, and is the period of 50 days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost Sunday. It is celebrated as a single joyful feast. Each Sunday of the season is treated as a Sunday of Easter, while the whole 50-day period concludes with Pentecost Sunday. The first eight days constitute the Octave of Easter and are celebrated as solemnities of the Lord. Since 2000, the second Sunday of Easter is also called Divine Mercy Sunday. May your heart be filled with peace, Sister Ann McGrew, Director Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center ann.mcgrew@maplemount.org

For over 15 years, women have come to the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center in the early spring to be inspired by one of Ursuline Sister Cheryl Clemons’ women’s retreats. March 23-25, Sister Cheryl will bring her insights to the only book of the Bible in which women are the main characters with “Seasons of a Woman’s Life: Lessons from the Book of Ruth.” “We always look for a topic related to women. I like to use the Bible because it’s easily accessible,” Sister Sister Cheryl Cheryl said. Clemons The Book of Ruth tells the story of the relationship between Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi, and how Ruth’s faithfulness was rewarded by God. Although it’s a book of the Old Testament, Ruth speaks to God’s faithfulness to all humanity through Jesus. Sister Cheryl hopes the women present will understand the value of supporting other women. “It will occur in the final weeks of Lent. It’s a very good story of Lent, the triumph of God’s fidelity and grace. I hope it will help to transform them.” The Book of Ruth provides the lyrics of the popular wedding hymn “Wherever You Go,” and Sister Cheryl hopes those familiar words will help women rise to new life in the Resurrection. Topics covered will include coping with loss, making choices, remaining loyal in friendship, taking risks, living as an outsider, hoping against hope and opening to new life. Typically about 30 women attend the retreat. There is both small group and large group sharing. Sister Cheryl is vice president for academic affairs/academic dean at Brescia University in Owensboro, Ky. She holds a doctorate from The Catholic University of America in historical theology-systematics and has taught a variety of courses.

Conference and Retreat Center from Sept. 20-23 to share their talents and friendship. Here are some of the things they said about coming to the Center: “It’s so peaceful here, and I enjoy the fellowship of people who share a common hobby.” - Susi Willis, Hermitage, Tenn.

“This is such a nice place to come, you get pampered and don’t have to fix dinner. It’s such a pleasant place, there’s such peace here. I’m in my own world.” - Carole Crane, Ashland City, Tenn.

ST. JOE AND PAUL

Sister Mary Celine Weidenbenner, left, and Sister Mary Sheila Higdon enjoy a Nov. 6 dinner to honor Ursuline Sisters and priests who have a history with St. Joseph and Paul Parish, Owensboro, Ky., as part of its 125th LEFT: anniversary. Mary Sheila attended the Sister Michele school all 12 years. Ann Intravia, manager of operations at the Sister Visitor Center in Louisville, Ky, stands in their expanded food pantry on Oct. 21. Besides adding 3,000 square feet for the food pantry and clothes closet in 2010, the Center now offers a weekly medical clinic and has begun a new Empowerment Fund to help raise money for the working poor.

SAINT ANGELA HALL AFTER...

A reconstruction project that began at Saint Angela Hall in June was completed in early November. The original balconies on the 1914 building had deterioriated and could no longer be used. They were removed and replaced with a metal fire escape that meets today’s safety standards. The hall, originally noviate housing and then home to the Junior College for Women, is currently used for office space but additional uses are being considered for the future. 11

Thank you to our kind and generous donors! Dear Friends of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, Giving is something that is engrained in our hearts. Several years ago a friend was sharing a story about one of her daughters. The daughter is married now and has two children of her own. When she was a little girl she had one doll that she really loved. She carried it around with her all the time. At Mass one Sunday during the children’s liturgy, the teacher was saying that Mary gave her precious son, Jesus, to us and He gave everything for us. The teacher added we should be willing to give to others. The next Sunday the collection for needy families was held and everyone was taking things up to the altar. When it came time for Mary Teresa to go up with the family, she took her little doll and laid it with all the other things there at the altar. When her mom asked her if she really wanted to do that, she replied, “I have loved her for a long time. Now she will make some other little girl happy, too.” That is giving. Giving is voluntarily sharing something with another person without expecting something in return. Giving can change the world. When we practice giving regularly and understand that our reason has some connection outside of ourselves, we can change our lives, the lives of others and our communities. There are many references in the Scriptures about giving. Some include Acts 10:35 which says, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” 2 Corinthians 9:7 states, “God loves a cheerful giver,” and Luke 6:38 says, “Give and it shall be given to you, good measure, pressed down, and shaken together.” There are many others but I think you see my point. Generosity can give us joy. It can remind us of the purpose of life. It can make us happy as we make other people happy. According to Lauren Tyler Wright in her Founders...............$25,000+

book, “Giving, the Sacred Art:” In its healthiest form, the sacred art of giving is about relationship. When we give and when we receive, we are reminded that we need other people to survive. Even the richest people in the world have needs that only another human can meet. No matter how substantial their gifts are to others, they too need to be the recipient of gifts. We are all givers and receivers; these are not two distinct groups of people. While some have plenty of money to give away and others don’t have enough to provide for their own needs, even the poorest of the poor can offer a smile as an expression of generosity. … Giving within relationship can be revolutionary because we are connecting with another person, and thereby connecting with God. As we remember the many wonderful things we are thankful for as we begin to prepare for giving at Christmas, let us all share what we have with others. To our wonderful donors, we give our heartfelt thanks for sharing your gifts with us. You are touching the lives of all those whom we work with in our many ministries. You are giving care and concern to our sisters in nursing care. You are encouraging us to continue to serve God’s people with a willing heart and generous spirit. God has blessed us with your generous hearts. Giving begins the circle. When we give, others will give and in the end the giving comes back to us. God bless you during this season of giving. 6 p.m. - Bishop Miege High School Proceeds will support the mission of the Ursuline Sisters

Leaving a Legacy... People touch our lives in so many ways. Jacinta Garinger is one of our wonderful friends who has touched our lives and will make a difference in our ministry for many years to come. Jacinta came to Mount Saint Joseph Academy when she was in the eighth grade. Because the Academy started with ninth grade she would walk down the hill to St. Alphonsus Elementary School to attend classes. She then began her high school years at the Academy and continued her college years at the Mount Saint Joseph Junior College. The junior college moved into Owensboro in 1950 and became Brescia College, now University. She continued her higher education at Xavier University in Cincinnati and received her degrees in education. Jacinta served for many years as a teacher and is now retired. She continues her relationship with the Ursuline Sisters today. She decided to extend her support for the community by naming the Ursulines in her will. Her legacy will help the community continue its mission for many years to come. “I am grateful to the Ursulines for the love, help and support they have given me over the years,” she said. “So to help them continue all the good work that they are doing I want to do something special for them. It seems that one way I can help is by remembering them in my will. May God continue to bless their good works.” Jacinta’s legacy will make a difference. Her mission is to help others through the works of the Ursuline Sisters. If you would like to know how you could assist in the mission of the community by naming the Ursuline Sisters in your will, or if you have already left the sisters in your will, please call Sister Amelia Stenger at (270) 229-2008 or (270) 929-5101. Your legacy will extend the Ursuline mission of education and Christian formation into the future.

Soli Deo Gloria

We rejoice in the gifts of our sisters, given for the kingdom of God The Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph are joining in celebrating the 10-year anniversary of UNANIMA International, the nongovernmental organization of the United Nations that is committed to the “economic and social advancement of all peoples.” At the Oct. 1 board meeting in New York City, Sister Michele Morek (pictured, far left) took over as the Ursuline representative on the board of trustees, replacing Sister Suzanne Sims, (pictured, far right) who completed her three-year term. Sister Michele served an internship with UNANIMA during the first quarter of 2011, working with clean water issues. Previous Ursuline representatives were Sisters Larraine Lauter, Mary Lois Speaks and Jacinta Powers. As part of the celebration, UNANIMA produced an October 2011 to December 2012 calendar titled “One Spirit…One Mission…One Hope.” August features Sister Mary Lois, Sister Jacinta and Ursuline Associate Phyllis Troutman with former Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher as he signs the bill outlawing human trafficking in Kentucky. Sister Michele is pictured on the June page. The human trafficking law, and the subsequent education on stopping the demand, is the most significant impact the Ursuline Sisters have had with UNANIMA. There are 17 religious communities involved in UNANIMA, and each has a representative on the board. The Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph were one of the seven charter members in 2001, and remain the only one that is not a truly international community, although two sisters minister in Chile. “It’s enlarged our global perspective,” Sister Michele said. Sisters Michele and Suzanne attended the Oct. 1 celebration reception, where the guest speaker, Jessica Ernst (pictured, center), was presented the Woman of Courage Award. Ernst is a petroleum engineer who has accused her former employer of polluting the water supply in her native Alberta, Canada.

The late Sister Darlene Denton (see obit, pg. 10) spent 13 years on the board of Shively Area Ministries, never tiring in her desire to help the agency that serves the disadvantaged in a blue collar section of Louisville, Ky. When Sister Darlene died on Sept. 5, Shively Area Ministries refused to let her spirit go. On Sept. 29, during its Fall Event Fundraiser, the first Sister Darlene Make A Difference Award was presented in her honor to Sister Jean Anne Zappa (pictured, above right), an Ursuline Sister of Louisville who has served as the agency’s mission advancement director since 2009. “We thank God for Sister Jean Anne’s diligent and successful work at increasing the capacity of Shively Area Ministries to help more people in need than ever before,” said Roxanna Trivitt (pictured, above left), executive director of Shively Area Ministries. “How fitting to award Sister Jean Anne, who picked up the baton from Sister Darlene and who continues to run the race to serve the poor.” Shively Area Ministries’ previous location was in a residential area with no sidewalks and no bus service. After a five-year search, Sister Darlene found a building on the highly traveled Dixie Highway with much more room for the expanding program. The agency moved there in 2008. “Shively Area Ministries would not be what it is today without Sister Darlene’s visionary leadership,” Trivitt said. “I thank God that He allowed her to see our dream come true.” The Sister Darlene Make A Difference Award will be presented annually to a staff member or volunteer whose visionary leadership results in a positive change for Shively Area Ministry’s mission. Shively Area Ministries began 23 years ago, and now has 26 churches from a dozen denominations helping to operate a food pantry, a clothes closet, prescription assistance, counseling, financial assistance and other services to the disadvantaged in the Shively area.
