In a world that's increasingly glued to screens, our children's health is facing a crisis. The days of kids racing home after school to play outside are becoming a distant memory. Instead, they're captivated by mobile devices and electronics. While technology isn't solely to blame, it's undeniably a significant factor in the alarming rise of childhood obesity, which has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adults over the past 30 years. This article delves into the gravity of childhood obesity and the health consequences it carries.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the statistics are troubling. Between 1980 and 2023, the percentage of obese children aged 6 to 11 in the United States soared from 7% to nearly 18%. Adolescents aged 12 to 19 saw an even more dramatic increase, from 5% to a staggering 21%. In 2023, over a third of children and adolescents were either overweight or obese.
Moreover, a startling 70% of obese youth aged 5-17 have at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease. They are also at risk for pre-diabetes, a condition indicating a high risk for diabetes development.
Obesity can lead to bone and joint issues, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem.
What's more, the consequences extend into adulthood. Those who are obese as children are at greater risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancers, and osteoarthritis. This health crisis even elevates the risk of various cancers, including breast, colon, endometrium, esophagus, kidney, pancreas, gallbladder, thyroid, ovary, cervix, prostate, as well as multiple myeloma and Hodgkin's lymphoma.
The good news is that efforts are underway to combat this epidemic. Many states have introduced laws requiring schools to allocate time for physical activity during the school day.
For example, New Jersey mandates at least 20 minutes of daily recess for elementary students. Furthermore, 46 U.S. states currently require health education for all grade levels to enhance health literacy.
But rather than asking kids to put away their screens, why not incorporate technology into the fight against childhood obesity? There's a multitude of apps available that focus on weight loss, and they can be a valuable resource. Take Kurbo, for instance. It's an app designed for children, offering health coaching and mobile weight loss support. It provides weekly live coaching sessions, keeps kids motivated, and sends daily reminders to make healthy choices.

When a dentist takes a look into your mouth, they see a lot of things. They can tell you what you already know, whether you should be flossing, brushing or coming in for cleanings more often. What you may not already know is that a routine dental exam can expose major health issues going on that you may not be aware of. Studies have linked common oral issues to diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease and even premature birth.
BLEEDING GUMS & GUM INFECTIONS:
It’s possible that the patient could be diabetic. Gum line infections not only worsen someone’s diabetes, but also can contribute to the risk for heart disease and stroke. Seeing as gum disease is the most common oral health issue in diabetics, it’s important to keep on top of these warning signs.
INFLAMED GUMS & LOOSE TEETH:
Should a dentist see inflamed gums and loose teeth, it can also be a sign of heart disease. If you have gum disease, it’s possible for the bacteria in your gums to travel all the way to your heart. This can eventually lead to coronary artery disease. The bacteria can cause clots or plaque build-up in arteries that can ultimately disrupt blood flow to the heart.
RECEDING GUM LINE:
A receding gum line combined with loose teeth can be a sign of Osteoporosis. The bone disease causes changes in the bones that support teeth like the jaw. Those with low bone mineral density tend to lose more teeth. It’s possible that if bone loss is significant dentures could become loose or ill-fitting.

Dementia patients lose memory, have heightened confusion and are disorganized. It’s also common for a person with early dementia to have poor oral hygiene. Scientists at the University of California followed 5,000 elderly people over the course of 18 years and learned those who brushed their teeth less than once per day were 65 percent more likely to develop dementia than those who brushed daily. Should a dentist notice bone loss and a decline in general oral health, Alzheimer’s disease could be the cause.
Pregnant women with periodontal disease are at risk for delivering a preterm baby. Every expectant mother is aware of the importance of maintaining good health, especially during their pregnancy. Oral health should not be missed. A healthy mouth supports overall health. Keeping up-to-date with daily brushing and flossing, scheduled cleanings and dentist and periodontist visits will certainly help to maintain a healthy safe pregnancy for mother and baby.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 1 out of 5 adults live with mental illness. Whether you are working through anxiety, depression, or another mental health illness there are some seemingly small things you can do that could result in big results. As reported by experts and people dealing with mental illness, exercising, sleeping well, having hobbies and eating right can scientifically improve our mental health. In this article, we’ll focus on a few small things you could add to your daily routine that can improve overall mental well-being and explain how it can help.
Statistics from UCLA Health(1) show that people who exercise regularly can have better moods, less anxiety, and overall improvement in their mental health. This could be an hour of hardcore Pilates, a nice walk around the park, or even just fifteen minutes of squats and push-ups. Whatever type of exercise you feel is best for your body, studies show it could help your mental well-being. The Mental Health Foundation(2) found that adults who exercise had about twenty to thirty percent lower risk of developing depression.
Finding a healthy outlet to let out or express how you feel is another important ingredient in the recipe. This could be in the form of writing, drawing, or even seeing a therapist. Any healthy release of negative emotions is good for you. As a writer, I know personally the healing effect writing has done for me. It has helped me get through some really tough times. These outlets provide an opportunity to express your emotions in ways you can’t always do out loud. If writing is not your thing, don't worry. You could sign up for classes near you or even just go on YouTube to watch tutorials for new things you want to try out. Expressing yourself and learning new interests helps you build yourself as a person while also being a good way to relieve stress.
Having a balanced diet can also improve your mental wellbeing. Eating well can reduce stress by increasing serotonin, reducing cortisol and adrenaline(3), and providing you with the energy you need for the day. But how do you eat a balanced diet? A balanced diet is all about eating many different foods in the right proportions, and there are many tools– like apps– that can help you keep track of what you eat. This includes the right amount of carbohydrates, proteins, fibers, vitamins, and so on. A good balanced breakfast could be avocado toast, eggs, and your favorite fruit. Being cautious about what you put into your body can drastically change how you feel, mentally and physically.
Sleep is often the most important aspect of our lives that has such an effect on mental health, yet one that is unfortunately not prioritized by many. Most adults need at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night, however, Single Care’s statistics(4) show that the average adult sleeps less than that. Not getting enough sleep can trigger anxiety, and depression, and even cause you to get mood swings. Getting 7 or more hours of sleep will not only keep you well rested, but also help you have a more enjoyable and productive day.
There is some science behind something as simple as sleeping. For example, melatonin is a hormone that your body produces when you’re in the dark, and it helps you fall and stay asleep. Some people take melatonin tablets before sleeping because it helps them sleep. Another reason sleep is so important while also being a part of the science, is sleep lets your brain rest. When you sleep your brain is able to recharge and it can decrease your chances of getting into a motor vehicle accident or even just falling asleep in class or at work(5). This is why it’s so important to keep a consistent sleep schedule and get at least 7 to 8 hours a night.
Going to therapy can also improve your mental health. According to the National Institute of Mental Health(6), only half of the people with mental illness get treatment, however, most of the people who get treatment feel at least a little bit of relief, whether that be reduced anxiety, or fewer episodes/ attacks. I said before that people who talk about their emotions or even just whatever daily, stressful activity is going on helps them feel better, and statistics prove it. According to the American Psychological Association(7), around 75% of people who go to therapy get some or many benefits.
There you have it! Getting more sleep, exercising, and expressing yourself are all examples of simple things you can do that can improve your mental health. While it may not be easy to stick to a schedule and it may not resolve all your issues, it’ll be worth it once you realize the positive effects these things have on your day to day life. As Dustin Lynch said, “Hard work always pays off, whatever you do.”

When it comes to household cleaning, no one wants to have to buy a new cleaning product for every surface, item, or area. We rounded up a list of five household items you can use to clean most of your home.

Plain baking soda not only makes your cookies and cakes rise to perfection, but it is also a versatile and inexpensive household cleaner. Baking soda is excellent for absorbing bad odors in your fridge or your carpets. To deodorize your fridge, open a new box and place it in your fridge (replace the box every three months). For carpets, lightly sprinkle the area, let it sit for 10 or more minutes, and then vacuum up the baking soda. Baking soda is also a great mild abrasive. Sprinkle it inside your fridge, oven, microwave, or on your countertops, then wipe it down with a wet rag for sparkling, clean surfaces. For another hack, run the hot water in your kitchen or bathroom and place ½ cup of baking soda down the drain to clean drains and nix minor clogs.
Pick up an inexpensive bag of lemons at the grocery store and use them to clean and remove bad smells in your house. To cut bad kitchen drain smells, start by throwing a few quartered lemons down your kitchen drain and running the disposal. You can also sprinkle coarse salt on the cut side of a lemon and rub the combination on copper, aluminum, or brass kitchenware and knives to remove tarnish and rust spots. If your tile grout is looking dingy, spray lemon juice on your grout and let it sit for 10 minutes. Wipe down the grout with a wet cloth and watch the stains melt away. For another bathroom cleaning hack, rub down glass shower doors with a cut lemon (or a cut lemon dipped in baking soda) to remove soap scum.
Potentially one of the most versatile cleaning products, white vinegar is also inexpensive. Vinegar’s natural antifungal and antibacterial properties are great for disinfecting. Use white vinegar to kill common household molds on drywall, leather, and tile. Spray the area with vinegar, let it sit, scrub gently to remove mold, and dry the area with a clean rag. You can also use vinegar to remove soap scum from bathtubs and shower curtains. Spray the mixture in your tub or on your shower curtain and then scrub and rinse. To clean windows and mirrors, mix equal parts warm water and vinegar, then spray and wipe down with newspaper or paper towels.
When used appropriately, essential oils are a safe and non-toxic way to boost home made cleaning solutions. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oils to vinegar and water mixtures to help cut through grease and soap scum and leave a fresh scent behind. Eucalyptus and lemon essential oils have natural antibacterial properties and are great to add to vinegar or baking soda-based cleansers. A good rule of thumb is to add 5 drops for every 2-3 cups of homemade solution. You can also use thyme, wild orange, or lavender essential oils in a diffuser to promote clean, breathable air, or add a few drops of lemon essential oil to a clean rag to remove sticky residue from non-porous surfaces.
Like vinegar, hydrogen peroxide has natural antifungal and antibacterial properties which makes it a great and inexpensive option for cleaning. Spray the item with hydrogen peroxide, let it bubble, and repeat as necessary to disinfect. You can also soak smaller, well-soiled items as needed. Hydrogen peroxide can help kill germs, mold, and mildew without the toxic chemicals of store-bought cleaners. This works well for non-porous surfaces (counters, fridges, microwaves, glass, showers, tile), toys, rags, and sponges. Also used to remove stains on fabrics and fibers, you can mix two parts hydrogen peroxide with one part dish soap and use it as a spot remover for laundry, carpet, and upholstery.
