When he is not in the office, Dr. Lopez serves on the admissions committee at HackensackMeridian School of Medicine. He says that this volunteer-based position is one of his biggest accomplishments, as he gets to teach the doctors of tomorrow.

Tips on Checking for Skin Cancer

SUMMER IS A WONDERFUL TIME TO BE OUTDOORS. However, you need to protect yourself against the sun’s harmful rays. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 1 in 5 Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in his or her lifetime. Anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of skin color, so it is important to be proactive.

Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer, but you can catch the early signs if you know what to look for. The “ABCDE” rule is a way to look for common signs of melanoma, which is one of the deadliest forms:

Common Types of Skin Cancer

Basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas are more common but don’t spread as quickly as melanoma. They are found on areas that receive the most sun such as the face, head and neck. These are very treatable if found early.

For basal cell carcinomas look for:

• Areas that look like a scar

• Raised red patches

• Small, pink or red shiny bumps with darker edges

ASYMMETRY

The moles/birthmarks don’t match

BORDER

The edges are irregular or jagged

DIAMETER

The spot is larger than ¼ inch across

COLOR

The color is not equal all over

EVOLVING

The spot is changing in color, size or shape

You should not only visit your doctor or healthcare professional for a yearly checkup but also examine your own skin once a month in a well-lit room in front of a full-length mirror. Be sure to check hidden areas such as between fingers and toes, soles of feet, backs of knees, groin and scalp.
