THIS IS USC AIKEN The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs.

When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

PEACH BELT CONFERENCE Vision Statement: The Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participation in athletic, academic and co-curricular events under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II. We will exemplify the characteristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the inclusion of students of all demographic groups who wish to participate in a well-rounded sports program. Our institutions, our academic goals, our athletic aspirations reflect a communality of purpose and a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the playing field. History: Entering its 23rd year of existence in 2012-13, the Peach Belt Conference has cemented its status as one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 32 national championships and 28 national finalists. Starting with only two championships in 1991, men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 15 championship sports with the addition of men’s and women’s track and field in the spring of 2013. The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and began play in fall 1990. The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06.

The PBC is in the midst of another dynasty as the Armstrong men’s and women’s tennis teams captured the 31st and 32nd national championships for the conference last year. The Pirates have won four women’s and three men’s national championships since 2008. Armstrong’s achievement was the highlight to one of the most successful seasons in league history. Peach Belt teams advanced to the national championship round of competition in 10 of our 13 sports. The Armstrong women’s soccer team reached the Final Four while the Flagler volleyball team went to the Elite Eight. The Montevallo men’s basketball team played in the National Championship game while the Lander women’s team reached the Elite Eight. The Flagler softball team reached the world series while the Georgia College and USC Aiken men’s golf teams reached the final eight match play at the National Championships. In all, 59 Peach Belt teams made appearances in the NCAA postseason, including seven men’s tennis teams and six each in the sports of men’s golf and women’s tennis. The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000. Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006. In 2009-10, the Peach Belt added Montevallo and Flagler. For the 2012-13 season, the league is expanding once again with the addition of Young Harris College, giving the Peach Belt 14 members for the first time in its history. David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its second era begins. Dr. Fred Carter, president of Francis Marion University, begins his two-year term as president of the Peach Belt this year. The conference currently holds championships in 14 sports, six for men and eight for women. They are men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s golf and women’s track and field.

SEASON PREVIEW The 2014 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team has reached several of its goals in the past – winning the conference championship and playing in the NCAA Tournament – but head coach Kenny Thomas and his squad are ready to take the next step, which is to aim for a National Championship. Coming off a 2013 season that saw the Pacers ranked No. 1 for much of the year, this year’s team has many pieces of the puzzle back in place and has added a multitude of talent. “Our team has opportunities to be a good team – and maybe a great team,” Thomas said. “It is hard to predict how the team will play, but I feel like they have great individual attitudes and the best team-first attitude the program has had. The student-athletes understand where they are at, what they have to do and understand that they have to work hard each and every day. “We will face many challenges this season and I’m excited to see how the team will step up,” Thomas stated. “We are better defensively this year than we were last year and offensively, we have a chance to be better than before. If things work out for us, 2014 could be a great year. Catcher The Pacers lost an all-conference player behind the plate from a season ago, but Thomas has a group that could be really good. Ben Donath moved to the position. A season ago, Donath started 36 games while playing in 52. He boasted a .295 batting average with 10 multi-hit games. “Ben has a chance to be really good,” Thomas stated. “He is just inexperienced right now, but he is getting better every day.” Charles Padilla redshirted last year but is fighting for a spot at catcher. “Charles has a chance to be a great player someday,” Thomas said. Junior college transfer Max Schoen has a powerful bat and could make an impact for the squad. “Max has shown great signs of being a good all-around player,” Thomas said. “He is still learning but is gaining confidence every day.” Junior Connor Oliveri transferred in this semester. He played 18 games last year at Barry. “Connor gives us stability as a tremendous defensive player,” Thomas stated. First Base Junior Ty Barkell put together an outstanding sophomore campaign as he earned first-team all-conference honors while batting .386. “There is a lot of hype about Ty right now,” Thomas said. “He will hit in the middle of the order and is a solid defensive player. Ty has a great attitude.” Grayson Smith saw time in 28 games last year and hit .264 after transferring from Mercer. “We moved Grayson to first base in the fall,” Thomas stated. “We believe he can be a really good first baseman and he gives us a quality back-up player right now.” Second Base Ryan Metzler was an all-region player in 2013 after hitting .357 and driving in 56 runs. “Ryan has a great attitude,” Thomas said. “You never hear a word from him as he just goes out and plays the game.” Shortstop Sophomore Sean Miller picked up PBC Freshman of the Year accolades a season ago after starting all 55 games and hitting .281. “Defensively, Sean is one of the best I’ve ever seen,” Thomas mentioned. “Offensively he is getting better and could be extremely productive. Rookie Corey Bryant could also see time in the middle infield. “Corey has come on strong in the fall and has shown our coaching staff that he can play,” Thomas stated. “We are very excited about him backing up both spots in the middle infield.”

Third Base Transfer TJ Costen should play the hot corner this year for the Pacers. “TJ played second base early in his career and then the outfield,” Thomas said. “He fits our team for him to play third base. He worked hard in the fall learning the position and is getting better every day.” Outfield Transfer Matt Bosse belted three round trippers and had 17 RBI last year at Maryland while Randy Luckett earned all-region honors at USCLancaster in 2013. Both will be fighting for time in left field. “Both players are middle of the order student-athletes,” Thomas said. “One would DH and the other would play in the field. Matt has great power and Randy is a great line drive hitter with some power.” Kody Belcher, a transfer from Kennesaw State, will play in center field for the Pacers. “Kody adds speed and is a solid defender,” Thomas stated. “He is a top-of-the-order type of player that can really run.” Sophomore Tyler Moore batted .384 during his rookie campaign and owned a .512 slugging percentage. “Tyler was an infielder in high school and converted to an outfielder last year,” Thomas mentioned. “He will play right field and he can absolutely fly.” Senior Dylan Durham played in 42 games in 2013 and batted .364. Rookie Nile Goings was tabbed a Preseason Under Armour All-American at Osbourne H.S. Both will see time in the outfield this season. Starting Pitchers Senior left-handed pitcher Derek Beasley earned first-team allconference and all-region honors a season ago. He started 15 games, compiling a 9-2 mark. Junior Danny Wissman was 4-0 in 2013 and held opponents to a .225 batting average. Senior Taylor Peed worked 11.2 innings last year while starting two games. “Derek and Danny are two lefties that have great experience,” Thomas said. “Taylor has come on strong and has a good opportunity to earn a starting role. Nick Yobbi, Nick Hissong and Brandon Sharpe could all see time on the mound this season. Relief Pitchers Redshirt-sophomore Caleb Smith owned a 1.82 ERA as a freshman while tossing 24.2 innings. Seniors Kevin Gifford and Jake Padgett will also see time on the mound in the mid-to-late innings for the squad. Rookie Hunter Hubbard and senior Randy Sipp will also see playing time. “Our bullpen is something we are very fortunate to have,” Thomas said. “We want Caleb to be the closer. Aside from that, Hunter came on this fall and could close or be a set-up man. Randy has been resilient during his career. He is very determined. He came to USC Aiken with a chance to possibly play, but is now a solid contributor to the team. “We have a lot of student-athletes in our bullpen that we can use every day and I’m excited about it.” Schedule “We are facing one of the toughest schedules we’ve ever had,” Thomas said. “Our four-team tournament the second week of the season takes our schedule to a whole new level of play.” Although the schedule is tough, the Pacers play 38 home games and host the PBC Tournament. Should the pieces of the puzzle come together like Thomas envisions, USC Aiken could see itself playing in Cary, N.C., for a National Championship.

Kenny Thomas In 14 seasons as head coach of the USC Aiken baseball program, Kenny Thomas has established the Pacers as a force in the Peach Belt Conference and a perennial top-25 team in NCAA Division II. During the 2010 season, Thomas became the winningest coach in USC Aiken baseball history. Thomas completes the 2013 campaign with 509 wins in his time as the head Pacer skipper. Thomas also surpassed the 1,000-win plateau as a college head coach in USC Aiken’s win over Flagler on March 2, 2013. Thomas earned his 500th victory guiding the Pacers in a three-game road sweep over then 10th-ranked Lander. Thomas is presently 1,029-513 in 26 seasons as a head coach. He is currently in the top-40 among active NCAA Division II coaches for wins. His .637 winning percentage as the Pacer skipper places him in the top-30 among active NCAA Division II head coaches. The 2013 season saw a number of milestones for Thomas and the Pacers as he led the team to a 42-13 overall record. The Pacers won the Peach Belt Conference regular season championship. Thomas was selected the Peach Belt Conference and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Southeast Region Coach of the Year for the 2013 season. The PBC Coach of the Year honor is the second of Thomas’ career (also 2009).

Head Coach 15th Season The Pacers were nationally ranked in every poll during the year, reaching as high as No. 1 nationally. The Pacers were ranked in the Top-30 in 32 straight national polls dating back to 2012. USC Aiken also was chosen as the second seed in the Southeast Region of the 2013 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship. Thomas has led the Pacers to six NCAA Tournament appearances (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2013) in the last nine seasons. The 2012 season saw USC Aiken finish at 37-18 while finishing the year ranked 16th nationally after being ranked as high as third during the season. The 2012 season marked the 11th time in the past 12 years that the Pacers have won at least 30 games. The Pacers encountered some tough luck in being left out of the Southeast Regional after being dropped by Lander one game from the PBC Tournament Championship. The Pacers went 27-6 at home on the year and saw many players receive individual accolades as they enjoyed another successful year. The 2011 USC Aiken baseball team was ranked as high as 16th nationally. USC Aiken concluded its year with a record of 29-21. The 2010 Pacer baseball team was ranked as high as sixth nationally at one point during the regular season. The Pacers finished the year with a record of 32-19.

USC Aiken’s 2009 baseball team ended the 2009 season tied for 10th in the final Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division II Top 30 poll. The final ranking of 10th was the highest for the Pacers under Thomas, who was chosen as PBC Conference Coach of the Year for his mentoring of the 2009 Pacers. USC Aiken ended the 2008 season ranked 11th, while they concluded the 2005 season 12th. The Pacers reached as high as No. 2 nationally in 2009 en route to their second ever Peach Belt Conference regular season championship. The Pacers’ prowess during the regular season helped USC Aiken earn top honors in the Southeast Region, enabling the program to host its second ever NCAA Division II Tournament regional. The Pacers advanced to the regional final for the second consecutive season before bowing out to NCAA Division II Baseball Championship semifinalist and Conference Carolinas Tournament champion Belmont Abbey in the first game of the championship round. USC Aiken (42-19) concluded its season having been a part of its fifth consecutive NCAA Division II Baseball regional. In 2008, Thomas and his staff guided the Pacers to a school-record 47 wins and a second-place finish in the NCAA South Atlantic Regional. USCA went 47-17 overall and 18-9 in the Peach Belt Conference, finishing just one win behind PBC champion Columbus State. It was April 23, 2006 when USC Aiken knocked off sixthranked Francis Marion 5-2 in Aiken to notch Thomas’ 200th victory at the helm of the Pacers. The Pacers went 45-19 that season, at the time the most wins in Thomas’ USCA tenure. In 2005, Thomas’ Pacers went 40-19 including a 16-14 mark in PBC play to advance to the program’s first NCAA South Atlantic Regional in a dozen years. On February 12, 2002, USC Aiken knocked off Limestone College 14-8 to hand Thomas his 100th victory at USC Aiken while his 50th win came on April 4, 2001 in a dramatic 8-6 victory over Newberry in 10 innings. In 2004, the Pacers opened the 1,000-seat Roberto Hernandez Stadium of which Thomas and Athletic Director Randy Warrick were instrumental in securing a one million dollar donation from the 16-year Major League Baseball veteran. Since the stadium’s opening, USCA is 169-64 at the stateof-the-art ballpark for a .725 winning percentage. In addition, USC Aiken hosted the 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010 Peach Belt Conference Baseball Tournaments. In addition to being chosen as the PBC Coach of the Year in 2009, Thomas was named Coach of the Year in 1989, 1993-96, and 1998 by his fellow coaches and was selected in 1995 and 1999 as the National Junior College Athletic Association Eastern District Coach of the Year. Thomas’ success has not gone unnoticed by the community. Over the past seven seasons, the Pacers have finished in the top 15 in Division II in home attendance. As part of Thomas’ annual Pack-the-Park day promotion a school record 1,806 fans attended Roberto Hernandez Stadium on April 15, 2012 to watch USC Aiken take on the UNC Pembroke Braves. Thomas has also instilled in his team the confidence needed to win the big games as the Pacers have won 102
